UMHLANGA TO BALLITO
A
t a time when the sharing of information both useful and not has never been easier, it’s hardly surprising that the rise of false news has had such an enormous effect on just about everything. If you come to believe that something is a certain way, even if it is not, this will be your reality…after all, why spoil a good story with the facts, hey?
While fake news might be in vogue at present, it certainly isn’t a new phenomenon. History, as we accept it, is generally cobbled together from anecdotal information written with a particular agenda. In our beloved country, for example, the history of the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 is generally based on the British version of events as the Zulus had no written language with which they could enter the debate. I dare say that this is true for much colonial history. But selective recording is not limited to history – it’s what people do to make their proposition seem better. Statistics…now there’s something you can manipulate to selectively position your proposition better than your competitor – and, of course, EVERYBODY believes them, don’t they? Okay, maybe not you so much, but still. The invention of broadcast media enabled the spread of mass misinformation to the benefit of whatever controlling power had access to it. The old adage of fact and fair comment as the ethos of good journalism has largely been confined to the scrapheap of human endeavour. The advent of social
media has changed the game forever. What passes for news now often comes to you via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, liberally sprinkled with inaccuracies. And there’s the Danish Prince’s rub… it’s become so problematic that the SAPS has recently issued a warning to people posting unverified information. They say that this spreads like wildfire and often creates unwarranted panic. According to South African law, you don’t have to be the originator of the content of a communication to be held liable for it. The repeating or sharing of a post is sufficient to potentially expose you to litigation. You may also be equally liable for fallout from another person’s posts where you know that you have been tagged in them and fail to take steps to disassociate or distance themselves from those posts. Scary, hey! If you are a member of a local security group of any description, here are some pointers from the security industry to keep you safe: •Don’t post any personal information. •Don’t post irrelevant information (advertising, lost pets, road blocks, speed traps or any council issues). •Don’t post “confirmed” or “thanks” or “received” once you’ve read a message. •Don’t post unverified information. Crime warnings or tip-offs received from other sources must be sent to the group administrator for verification. •Don’t engage in argumentative comments or use foul language on the group. •Don’t try to be a hero. Members of the public should never get involved in a
potentially dangerous situation. Contact the SAPS or your security company to investigate should you see anything suspicious. And here are some pointers from your friends that they are probably too polite to tell you: •Self-proclaimed Coaching and daily “Motivational Quotes are irritating. •You really don’t need to post every single you meal you eat on your new diet. •It’s great that you work out, but no one needs to see a daily gym, bathroom or sexy selfie. •Why post pics of the mundane aspects of your life? •One blurry concert photo is enough, thanks. •Distorted images or babies as profile pictures aren’t cute •The cryptic message about feeling . . . *depressed* is just silly •Extremist, borderline-psycho political rants are unwelcome. •Candy Crush or other arb invitations… no thanks •Photos of disgusting injuries are awful •Holiday-photo overkill is mindless •Bad pictures of your friends shouldn’t be posted – please… •No one wants to know how wonderful you would like us to think your life / relationship is. Just be real…unless that’s too dull –better still, just don’t post it! Welcome to another edition of Life & Style also online www.lifeandstyle. fm and on air 88FM Ballito.

HERE ARE SOME OF SHAUN’S TOP HOME SECURITY TIPS. The top three security tips: 1. It is important to secure doors and windows around the home that are not easy to see from the road by your security company and your neighbours, or by you when home. 2. Fit burglar proofing to every single window in your home, making sure at least one security barrier is able to open in case of an emergency. 3. WHALE TALES
T
HE recent whale incidentinZinkwazi has inspired me to write about what I know about whales.
Not all whale stories have to end on a sad note even when there was a time when the world thought they would go
extinct. Human intervention with the world ban on wailing in the 80’s and 90’s has seen their numbers bounce back each year where more and more whales visit our shores from around August through to November . Being a lifeguard does not only entail saving people from drowning, it also comes with the responsibility of assisting distressed sea animals where we can. They say that there is no greater feeling than saving a fellow human from drowning. Well, that’s true but there is also a great sense of feeling when one saves an animal from the same fate. About 12 years back I got an early morning call that a whale calf had got caught in the Thompsons Bay shark nets and there was a very distraught mother whale frantically trying to help her calf. The local meshing officer was already there and he had called out their team of whale release experts to assist from their base in Umhlanga as well as us with our small inflatable rescue boat to standby in the event of something going wrong. On arrival we noticed the calf stuck in the net on the surface and just behind a very distraught mother whale desperate to save her calf, bellowing and charging down the boat that was trying to get in to cut the calf free.
“SEAWEED” STEVE HONEYSETT
The decision was made to use our inflatable rather than their hard fibreglass boats, as this would allow them edge their way along the net without the engine on which would calm both the whales down. As we pulled our way closer to the calf the mother became agitated and charged down on us only to turn away from the net at the last minute I recall the absolute size of her and thought how wrong things could go if she powered through the net. She could easily take us both out and, with a flick of the tail, she could knock us all the way back on to
the beach like a rugby ball being kicked through the posts. She was probably telling us to hurry up. But after a few runs like that, she began to show less aggression towards us and it seemed she had begun to trust us to get her calf free. She swam slowly up and down the net as we started cutting the calf free. Quick and experienced work by the shark’s board officers soon had the job done. The little whale was free and the two other boats were called in to escort both mother and calf away from danger and out to sea It was then that I realised, as we drove alongside both whales, that the mother
Seaweed Steve, AKA Steve Honeysett presents the Daily Surf Report on 88.0FM
was showing appreciation for what we had done by the sound she made as she blew out her air as if she was talking to us. Yes that was truly a happy ending, but another story comes to mind about the whale that got the last laugh on us. Sometimes a whale sits with his tail sticking out of the water and can stay like that for hours on end. On an early winter’s morning in August, when the sun was peeping over the horizon, I had just arrived in the office when the phone rang and there was a frantic Sheffield Beach resident reporting a plane in the ocean with its tail sticking straight into the air. Well I have heard them all, but this one, well… I had to check it out for myself. So off I went to investigate and, as I drove into the car park outside Villa Royal flats, my eyes popped out their sockets. I saw a plane’s tail sticking out of the water. It was real enough to haul out my binoculars to get a better look and… there it was… and my heart kicked into race mode. By then, other rescue services had arrived and they confirmed what I had been looking at. Now we were all sure that there was a plane in the water. Racing back to launch the rescue boat I wondered what had happened and who might be still trapped inside this plane. I suppose those are thoughts all rescue workers face when on their way to an accident. So we launched the inflatable and were off like General Custer riding out with his soldiers to do battle, the boat at full revs, bouncing from wave crest to wave crest on our way to save the day. Only a few hundred meters from the plane the tail sunk beneath the surface and a whale with a big grin popped out his head to see what all the commotion was about. Boy, were we embarrassed that day and for how we got that wrong, we were made
A young whale washed up on Zinkwazi Beach on Monday. This is particularly early for whale activity in the region – almost a month before they usually arrive on their annual migration and it is suspected that this one may have been hit by a ship. As the carcass was still fresh, literally hundreds of locals arrived to carve it up and remove the meat and blubber as a welcome additional food source. Local authorities have subsequently removed what little remains of the whale from the beach but it will be a while before the beach is opened for swimming again as there will undoubtedly be a large number of sharks in the area attracted by the blood and blubber in the water.
to pay for drinks all round on us. There have been many whale encounters, some memorable like these two stories and many more where we have cut them loose from nets or cut off fishing nets while they are on the move, and even pushing a small calf off the beach back into the surf to swim off to the safety of the great ocean . I may not be a whale expert or a whale whisperer, but it’s what I know about whales that makes me love the ocean.

FIGHT Colds & Flu before they begin KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
T
HERE is a strong drive worldwide to use the Flu Vaccination each year to prevent colds and flu. However with the current effectiveness ranges from 10% - 67%, the flu shot still falls short of providing an absolute assurance against falling ill this season. Whether you decide to get the shot or not is up to you, and as with any medication there are always side effects, so it is important to make an educated decision.
Our assertion is always that a healthy lifestyle that supports your immune system is the best way to prevent the flu. In this article we discuss evidence to support the benefits of eating well, living a healthy lifestyle, and nutrition supplements for the prevention of flu. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, adequate sleep is an often overlooked but vitally important factor. Sleep is our bodies chance to rebuild, replenish and detoxify. Inadequate sleep duration or inadequate deep sleep, can lead to changes in your immune profile that is not always rectified by sleep recovery. Another factor to consider, in all aspects of health, is the level of stress you are experiencing. Chronic stress leads to a suppressed immune system, thus leaving you exposed to the flu virus. Take note of all of the major stresses in your life, and if they are unavoidable, then make time for things that will decrease your stress (i.e. balance the bad with some good). The third lifestyle factor is exercise. Exercise can either help with or work against your immune system. Intense exercise can suppress your immune system, whilst moderate exercise can improve it. It is important to find a moderate intensity form of exercise that you enjoy doing and commit to a regular schedule. HEALTHY DIET Food choices have a powerful effect on the health of your immune system. Some of the main dietary influences include: - SUGAR. Did you know that a high dose of simple sugar (in all forms) can suppress your immune function for up to 5 hours after ingestion? Imagine how much of an effect chronic high consumption of sugar would have! - PROTEIN. Our immune system relies on a large network of proteins in various forms. These proteins are all made from amino acids which we obtain form our diet. It is important that we get enough healthy protein-rich foods on a daily basis to support immune system functioning. Animal proteins are the richest supply of these amino acids, but there are plenty of vegetarian sources available to us as well. - ZINC. Chronic zinc deficiency can suppress the immune system. The best dietary sources of zinc are nuts and seeds, grass fed meats and oysters. There are zinc-fortified foods on the market, but these do not necessarily provide immune benefit. Getting zinc from your food or a high quality nutritional supplement is best. - FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Whilst incredibly obvious, these need special mention. These are nature’s richest sources of immune-boosting nutrients such as vitamins C, E, beta-carotene and other phytonutrients. Vitamin C rich foods are particularly important for the immune system, and these include bell peppers, citrus fruits and broccoli. Beta-carotene rich foods include carrots, squash, pumpkins and green leafy vegetables such as spinach.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS Whilst a healthy diet and lifestyle can provide the best immune support, there are some nutritional supplements to provide further preventative support through flu season. It is important to consult your healthcare practitioner for nutrient interactions before taking supplements if you are on any prescription medications. · PROBIOTICS are of course, top of the list. There is solid and significant evidence showing that probiotics support and modulate the immune system. There are a number of probiotic supplements on the market, but make sure that you get a good quality one with live bacteria for the best support. You can also top up your probiotic intake with fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut.
immune system. However if you have the above in place you will be wellcovered for the flu season of 2018.

· VITAMIN D3 will provide benefit to many people. Our immune cells have vitamin D receptors, which suggests that vitamin D3 may play an important role in the immune response to infections. There is also NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH evidence of a link between vitamin D status and influenza risk, with supplementation of vitamin D3 then leading to recovery from influenza. · GARLIC is another interesting supplement when it comes to colds and flu prevention. Whilst you can ingest garlic in your diet, the recommended intake is 2 – 3 cloves per day (which may lead to tricky conversations with your spouse). You can also get aged garlic in capsule form which might be a bit easier to tolerate. People who take aged garlic capsules (2.56 grams/day) have shown to have reduced duration, severity and incidence of colds and flu. · VITAMIN C is one we are all well aware of. It is probably the most known vitamin when it comes to colds and flu prevention. Vitamin C works to prevent colds and flu, as well as to help you bounce back quickly when you do pick up a cold. The quality of your Vitamin C supplement is vitally important. Commonly, vitamin C supplements contain Ascorbic Acid, which is fine to supplement with, but can irritate the stomach. For improved absorption and less stomach irritation you may look at an Ester-C form. This can be taken in higher dosages. For the best absorption, arguably the Lypospheric form is the best as it delivers high dose vitamin C directly into your bloodstream. Of course there are many other nutrients well-known to boost your

THE 2018 COMRADES MARATHON LONGER THIS YEAR his year’s Comrades Marathon will be slightT ly longer for runners than previous years.
CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “The officially measured and certified distance for this year’s Down Run is 90,184km. The 2018 Comrades Down Run will be slightly longer than the previous Down Run route. The 2016 route was 89,208km.” James has advised that some changes will be effected from the Start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. “On race day, our runners will start their epic Down Run journey at the City Hall, running down Chief Albert Luthuli Street, heading east. From there they will continue along Alan Paton Avenue and then contraflow onto the N3 national freeway. From there, they will glide off right onto the Market Road on ramp and then left onto the slip road to CB Downes Road and then follow the traditional Comrades route towards Polly Shortts and onwards to Durban.” James continues, “Regarding the route into Durban, athletes will follow the N3 under the
Tollgate Bridge and then take the new fly-over into David Webster Street which becomes Bram Fischer Road. From there, our runners will turn left into Samora Machel Road which then becomes Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.” James concludes, “Runners will then run contraflow in Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and cross to the north bound lane at Battery Beach Road. They will then take the pathway to the left between the bollards, pass the Virgin Active Gym and turn left into the tunnel before Nino’s and onto the field to the Finish Line at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.” As per the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act 2010, James has also confirmed that the new finish at Moses Mabhida Stadium aligns with the requirements of the Events Act which necessitated the move to this iconic Durban landmark. The 2018 Comrades Marathon takes place on Sunday, 10 June 2018. For more information, visit www.comrades.com.

SOME COMRADES DO’S AND DONT’S Coach Neville Beeton gives the following advice to Comrades runners... DO start conservatively. Neville advises starting the race as though it is your usual weekend LSD run. You know that pace well so stick to it in the beginning. He advises using the the first 16km to Lion Park in the dark as a warm-up. The temptation is to speed out of your pen and get caught up in the adrenaline at the start of the race. This can sabotage all your months of hard training. “Your aim is to get to Lion Park feeling as though you have just warmed up and are ready for the big race,” advises Coach Neville. DO avoid the first few water stations. These can be
very congested and can slow you down unnecessarily. You may also be tempted to drink too much (think: do you usually drink 3 times in the first 10km of a run?). Instead, start the race with a small bottle of water/energy drink and sip on it slowly until Lion Park. “One of the problems is that with so many water tables, runners tend to drink more than usual and end up feeling bloated and unable to drink later from 65km when they really need it,”says Coach Neville.
DO start with extra layers. Wear an old long-sleeved T-shirt, beanie and gloves that you can discard on the route. It can be bitterly cold at the start and all the way to Lion Park and you don’t want to waste energy trying to keep your body temperature up. Bonus: you’ll be donating some warm clothes to someone who really needs them when you discard the items of clothing.
r the THON…
DO use a pace calculator or pace band which you can buy at the expo (or use the one that you will be given at the Chairlady’s run). Make a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. Your Plan A is your ideal time. Plan B is slower, but still a time you are happy with, and Plan C is to FINISH. Unless you have a medical reason or are pulled off for missing a cut-off, your main aim should be to finish.
RE, TOPS & running the y best of luck nderful race. DO keep moving! Never, ever
stand still, but keep moving forward. If you can’t run, then walk. The clock is ticking and standing still could cost you dearly later when the cut-off gun goes.
DO make a checklist! Remember items such as your championchip, running watch, energy gels and drinks, sunblock, Imodium, running belt, tissues, vaseline, something warm for the start and for after the race. DO make sure you have planned transport to the
start, your seconds know the access points, the layout of the finish and where the club tent is.
DON’T depend on your seconds. They may get

stuck in traffic and not be able to get to you. Don’t be upset if this happens, there are more than enough water tables. Your seconds are mostly for moral support. We (DCS) are lucky enough to have wonderful volunteers at our club who will man water points for us every roughly 15km so make sure that you get all your essentials to our club seconders the week before Comrades. That way, you know that they will be available for you at certain spots.
DON’T try anything new on the day! You hear this again and again and I’m sure that you believe that you would never be silly enough to fall prey to such a novice mistake, but it’s easy to get caught up on the day in trying something that you bought at the expo that you believe may make you faster, or that someone hands you on the side of the road, that you think may just get you through the next few km’s. DON’T! The best way to ruin your race is to end up vomiting or with diarrhea or worse. The same goes for kit. Shoes should have been worn in (you should have run 150-200km in them) and you should have worn the exact clothes (including socks) that you plan to wear on the day. DON’T panic if you don’t sleep well the night before Comrades. Studies have shown that it’s more important that you sleep well the night before that (i.e. two nights before Comrades). Having said that, try to rest and stay off your feet as much as possible the day before Comrades. DON’T forget to charge your running watch the night before! DON’T eat unusual food the night before the race
just to carbo-load! If you aren’t used to eating huge bowls of pasta, don’t force one down the night before the race. Eat what you usually eat and eat early so that you have time to digest your food. The same applies to the morning before the race.
DON’T forget to enjoy the race!
Neville ran his first ultra marathon in 1977 at the age. He has run 258 marathons and ultras, including 10 Comrades. He has been coaching for the past 18 years, helping a range of runners from beginners to elite reach their dreams. www.coachneville.co.za

This is why high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE The arousal of the cardiovascular system is integrally tied to the stress response. Individuals are therefore faced with increased risk of a number of stress-induced cardiovascular disorders, the first of which is high blood pressure. High blood pressure is among the most lethal, widespread ailments of the time. THE COST OF STRESS The costs that organisations incur from job-related stress are high. Costs to the individual of prolonged and recurrent stress includes high absenteeism, lower performance levels, joylessness and meaninglessness, physical and mental illness, lowered energy, wasted potential, lack of career advancement, decreased satisfaction with life, work, and relationships, low self-esteem, loss of interest in sex and social withdrawal. Unfortunately, the cost of this stress does not stop with the individual. This negative energy ripples outwards affecting others and contributes to, amongst other problems such as divorce and infidelity DECREASED PRODUCTIVITY The cost to the individual of prolonged and recurrent stress includes decreased productivity at work and even at school.
DIVORCE Another major and concerning consequence resulting from the family and workplace stress is that of divorce. It is a sad fact that approximately 60% of marriages end up in divorce in South Africa, and the last decade has been plagued by an even more significant rise in divorce rates as well as in the proportion of the population that are divorced. There are many reasons for the high divorce rate. There has been an increase in the numbers of married woman entering the labour market, which places new demands (stress) on the relationship and family. This means that both parties spend the major portion of their waking lives in an organisational setting of some kind. The organisational setting, in turn, affects family life directly and places major time constraints on both parties resulting in various psychological disorders, if the coping mechanisms are not intact. A complete new marriage setting and family system has developed and is evident in the twentieth century. Home environments have changed, new values are accepted, different needs have been set, new roles are created, and the structures and functions of families have changed. This situation has led to more demands placed on families and marriages. Research estimates that as many as one-third of today’s children will experience their parents’ divorce and that about one-half will spend time with a single parent before the age of 18. Single parent homes headed by fathers are also becoming more common. INFIDELITY An affair is devastating to everybody involved including the unfaithful spouse and the lover. It is one of the most painful experiences that the “cheated” spouse will ever have to be forced to manage and also very, very painful for the children and everyone else involved.

FOR FATHER’S DAY, Something for the Boys…“Shhhhh…. Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane?” DR. KARA HOFFMAN (AU.D) - THOMPSON & HOFFMAN AUDIOLOGISTS
A
S an audiologist, I am not well-versed in the world of hunting, however I have a lot of experience dealing with a large portion of the population who have become hearing impaired as a result of noise exposure, particularly shooting – be it recreational, or occupational. Did you know that many hunters—including the late Elmer Keith, Jack O’Connor, and Nash Buckingham—were severely hearing impaired as a result of the cumulative effects of gunfire that they sustained over a lifetime of shooting?
Hunters and shooters have been told many a time that hearing loss as a result of noise exposure is common – but many hunters do not wish to insert ear protection into their ears
for fear of not hearing the chirps of that bird, or the rustling of the leaves from an animal in the distance. It seems to be a catch-22: to wear the protection so that they do not damage their hearing so that they can in fact hear the birds and the leaves rustling, or to wear it, and it blocks out the sound of the game one is targeting. Shooters and hunters are exposed to some of the loudest, most dangerous noises (an animals!!) anywhere in the world. Even small calibre weapons create dangerous impact noises. A single gunshot can cause permanent hearing damage. It is extremely important that you take appropriate steps to protect your hearing when you are exposed to noisy environments. As an audiologist it is my responsibility to remind all hunters and shooters (and any individual exposed to loud noise, including domestic workers who use vacuum cleaners and hairdressers who use hair dryers regularly) to have their hearing annually assessed. It is also my responsibility to inform the public that prevention is better than cure! And natural and nor-
mal hearing levels are and will always be better than any piece of technology you place in your ears – so I remind you all subtly to have your hearing checked before it becomes a problem, and that there is so much technology out there to assist you in preventing noise induced hearing loss, while at the same time being in a position to hear environmental sounds while hunting, and also to be comfortable. For the boys and men out there… (and your wives, daughters and partners who are pushing you in my direction)… we are running a special in June for father’s day, so call us to find out more!!

Delights SWEET POTATO FLATBREADS Serves 4 to 6 pax This recipe is a quick and easy addition to a mezze styled feast, with curries or even a delicious hearty tagine.
Served on ceramic ware and Olga-Mare table linen from the Cookin Store at the LifeStyle Centre
Green Sweet Potato Puree: Simply Blitz all of the below ingredients in a blender until smooth 500g whole roasted Sweet Potato (peeled) 50g Spinach 10g Chives 10g Coriander 1 Clove Garlic ¼ C Olive Oil
Flatbreads: 2 Cups Green Sweet Potato Puree (as specified above) 2 ½ Cups Spelt Flour (or a Gluten Free alternative if you’d like? Brown Rice Flour works well, if you’re using a blended gluten free flour try and find one with xanthum gum for a bit of elasticity) 1T Baking powder Salt & Pepper Sesame seeds Sumac Butter/olive oil for frying
Method: 1. In a large mixing bowl mix two cups of the sweet potato puree with the flour of your choice, baking powder, salt & pepper. 2. Combine thoroughly with your hands, kneading until it reaches a good doughy consistency. 3. Get a pan onto the stove at a medium to high heat. 4. Break off 50/60g bits of dough and flatten out with your hands. If the dough is sticking. Use a bit of oil or flour on the surface that you are flattening the dough on. 5. Melt some butter or olive oil on the pan and place the flatbreads on, toast until beautiful and golden brown (almost charred) on one side and then flip over and do the same on the other side. 6. Serve straight out of the pan with tzatziki, hummus and a generous sprinkle of sumac. Side Note: Sweet Potatoes all have varying water contents, so if you need to dry out your mixture a bit by adding a sprinkle more flour (up to ¾ of a Cup, then go ahead) The Delish Sisters talk food on 88.0FM every Tuesday at 4pm

THE TOYOTA HILUX DAKAR SPECIAL EDITION
T
HE limited edition is set apart by a unique grille and bumper design that has been introduced as a facelift in certain overseas markets. The new design replaces the previous ‘stacked’ grille louvres with a more integrated trapezoidal treatment reminiscent of its Land Cruiser 200 big brother.
For now, however, the regular Raider and SRX models continue with the same frontal design as before. In addition to the new front end, the Dakar Hiluxes are kitted out with gloss black exterior mirrors and door handles as well as Dakar logos. There’s a bespoke - and rather bright - Inferno Orange paint option too, in addition to the more sober Graphite Grey Metallic, Chromium Silver and Glacier White options that other Hilux buyers have. Inside the features list is largely as per the range-topping Raider trim grade, except that the latter’s cloth seats make way for partial leather trim and
the edition also gets standard satnav and some gloss black decorative trim. For the record, all Raider and Dakar models come with a touchscreen audio system with reverse camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, seven airbags, stability and traction control, and Trailer Sway Control. The Dakar is available in a wide range of configurations, essentially mirroring the Raider line-up, with engine options consisting of the familiar 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel, with 130kW and 420-450Nm on tap, and the 4-litre normally aspirated V6 petrol (175kW/376Nm). The Dakar diesel models command premiums of around R19 000 over the equivalent Raider models, while the V6 costs R11 000 extra. For more info contact McCarthy Toyota Ballito 032 946 7800
