UMHLANGA TO BALLITO
T
HE festive season has arrived much faster than expected this year – well, that’s how it seems, and I am completely unprepared for it.
We installed some Christmas lighting in the studio at the Lifestyle Centre last week and it felt vaguely surreal. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that we were taking the Christmas decorations down and putting them away for another year? Wow – does the sand run out of the hourglass faster as it empties or does it just appear that way? On the one hand, life going by in fast forward mode is depressing if you feel that you are reaching the end of the ride too soon, but on the other, it means that if you are not particularly enjoying the scenery at the moment, you can draw some comfort from the realisation that it will be changing soon. I don’t wish to alarm you, but if you believe that you still have time to do the things that you have been meaning to do but just haven’t got around to yet, it’s much later than you think. The clues have been there for you all along. There are countless references to the rapid passage of time in the old scriptures and the new, in poetry and
prose, song lyrics and movie scripts… even some of the most moving television commercials have capitalised on the theme. Ultimately all of these clues serve to remind us to seize the day and, “Just Do It”! Talking of TV commercials, this year’s selection of international Christmas commercials, particularly the British commercials, is as fabulous as always. The internet makes it possible for you to watch them online and I urge you to do this if you want to feel a charge of emotion strong enough to bring a tear to the eye of even the most jaded of us. The Sainsbury and John Lewis ads are particularly awesome in this regard! If, however, you have allowed yourself to get sucked into the wormhole that is the South African pre-election madness, you might be feeling particularly depressed at this time by the ostensible sacking and pillaging of the last vestiges of good governance and common sense. In certain quarters it feels like the animals are running the zoo - not the best scenario for long term prosperity… but remember - this too shall pass. My top tip for a happy festive season is to turn off the social media and any other form of “news”, indulge in the fantasy of Christmas with all of the trimmings, carefully select entertainment that uplifts and inspires you and refuse to get drawn into
conversation that might lead you into unhappy territory. Sure, it’s a bit ostrich like, but your perception becomes your reality and if that means refusing to be depressed by the negative, so be it! It’s later than you think, so fill your world with love and joy and celebrate all of the things we have to be grateful for. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations,in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. (Extract from DESIDERATA Max Ehrmann (1872 - 1945))

EXERCISE IS MEDICINE, MOVEMENT IS LIFE
STEVE HONEYSETT
P
EOPLE often ask why I am always on the move so this is the topic of my article for this edition.
In an interview earlier this year, surfing legend from the 1970s, Gerry Lopez, who went on to become a top Yoga instructor, said “exercise is medicine movement is life”. This inspired me to think about where I am going with all my sporting activities and how long can I keep going. Most of my activities are probably classified in the extreme sports category and as long as your body can cope, it’s fine to continue. But the older you get, the harder it becomes and the injuries start to creep in. So, inspired by what Gerry Lopez had to say about the importance of body movement, I have looked at ways to exercise that will continue to keep important aspects of movement in check without doing serious damage to joints and muscle groups. Any activity for me must blend around my lifestyle and I am not much of a gym person, preferring to do all my exercises outdoors I am a firm believer in varying sports to avoid long term damage to certain parts of the body. As a beach person, I divide my exercises into various disciplines with the main focus on my core. SUP (Stand Up Paddling), Surf Ski Paddling, Prone Paddling (Racing Surfboard), Surfing and Beach Running are my preferred modalities. Each of these disciplines exercises many muscle groups
and greatly assists with balance issues that become a concern as we move into our mid lives and older. Whatever your sporting preference, you can break down movements and work on certain aspects that keep you on top of your sport for a lot longer. One discipline that I enjoy is beach running which over the years has fine-tuned my ability to know what sand to look for that will be hard under foot and what rock to step on that you will not slip on. All of this teaches you to think quickly so that you know where to place your foot as you are moving forward. I have found my balance has improved as I hop from rock to rock and learn to shift my weight in all sorts of directions to ensure that I land on the next rock without take a tumble. Yes, I have been through the school of hard knocks along the way but most times it’s been because I have broken my concentration. Now I have learned to slow things down now and to do things at a comfortable pace. They say that as you get older, you get wiser so you should have learned to break down your sporting movements and execute them in a better way that you did when you were in your 20s. It’s not about keeping up with the youngsters anymore. It’s about keeping moving to keep you going longer so you can enjoy a lot of different sporting activities. Keep Moving

DETOX YOUR BODY from the Outside In KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
W
HEN it comes to our health, many of us wish that we could simply hit the reset button and start over (in the pre-cheesecake era for example). This is when we turn to the Body Detox. Vegetable juices, maple syrup and lemon-juice drinks, and (shudder) salt-water cleanses.
Did you know that our skin is actually the largest organ in our bodies? Yet so often, we forget to give this major system a break from all of the toxins in our environments. Enter the Outside-In Detox. When it comes to your Outside-In Detox you will need to consider changing products from your skin and body care, and your household cleaners. It can be quite radical to change all of the above in one go (also quite expensive), so perhaps consider tackling each item over time when your current products run out.
SKIN AND BODY CARE PRODUCTS There are a number of rather scary chemicals when it comes to skin and body care. Did you know that adults absorb up to 60% of the chemicals we put onto our bodies? Here are 9 chemicals to look out for to protect your body: 1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS). SLS are highly corrosive and wear away the protective layer of your skin. Due to their origin, sulfates can cause eye irritation and skin rashes, and may be contaminated with possible carcinogens. 2. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). PEG may also be contaminated with a possible carcinogen, besides itself being a breast carcinogen, and increases the permeability of the skin. If used on broken skin in can cause irritation and systemic toxicity. 3. Synthetic Colours and Pigments. These are often made from coal tar, contain heavy metal salts and almost all synthetic colours are carcinogenic. 4. Synthetic Fragrances. This is a large group of chemicals, but the most important chemicals to be aware of is the Pthalates. These are known endocrine (hormone) disruptors and may alter genital development, decrease sperm counts, cause birth defects, as well as negatively affect liver and kidney health. 5. Parabens. Parabens are known to mimic the female hormone estrogen and can drive the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancers. They also affect
male hormones, and have been linked to other health issues such as cancer, endocrine disorders, immune dysfunction, brain dysfunction and skin irritation. 6. Mineral Oil. Mineral oil is a byproduct of the production of crude oil and used as a humectant (something to help bind moisture to the skin). Mineral oil clogs your pores as it’s not absorbed well, and is often tainted with other nasty chemicals when produced. 7. Oxybenzone. This is a common component of sunscreen. With all of us on the North Coast making sure to protect our skin from the sun to prevent cancer, we may be doing more harm in the long run by using sunscreens with this chemical. Oxybenzone has been shown to be carcinogenic and hormone-mimicking. It also penetrates the skin and increases the production of free radicals. A natural zinc oxide based sunscreen is a far safer option! 8. Lead. I know what you’re thinking, surely not? But yes, lead is commonly found in regularly used cosmetics such as lipsticks. Lead is a proven neurotoxin linked to miscarriages, decreased fertility and delayed onset of puberty in women. 9. Aluminum. Aluminum is mostly used in antiperspirant deodorants, but it is classified as a neurotoxin. There are some studies suggesting links between aluminum and breast cancers. If you are intimidated by the above list, don’t worry, we have PLENTY of healthy skin-friendly products in store for you to try. There are more options available than you think.
remover, eye-makeup remover, and face cleanser. For your household cleaners, you can definitely cut down on the number of products that you need. A natural soap can often be used for anything from dishes to floors and windows. Some natural laundry powder/gels do soften your clothes to the point where you don’t need an additional product (except for items such as towels). FINAL THOUGHTS There really are amazing, South African produced, natural products available for your skin and body care. We’re already exposed to so many toxins that are unavoidable in our environments, so we really need to be more proactive with the products we put on our bodies and use in our homes. Lifestyle Health have a plethora of options to offer you that will suit any budget, but start by taking the above lists and checking up on how your current products do!
HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS Whilst the above chemicals can also be found in household cleaners, there are a few additional nasties to watch out for. 1. Perchloroethylene (PERC). This is commonly For more information on any of these products and expert advice, please visit found in dry-cleaning solutions, spot removers, and Lifestyle Health, carpet and upholstery cleaners. PERC is a known Shop 24A, Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Ballito neurotoxin and possible carcinogen. 2. Triclosan. This is an aggressive antibacterial 032 946 0441 that is found in dishwashing liquids and hand soaps with an “antibacterial” label. It is a possible carcinogen and NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH is currently being investigated as a potential hormone disruptor. 3. Quarternary Ammonium Compounds (QUATS). QUATS are another antibacterial agent, and are found in fabric softener as well as most household cleaners labeled as “antibacterial”. It is a skin-irritant, may help breed antibiotic resistant bacteria, and is investigated as a potential culprit for respiratory disorders. SUNUMBRA 4. 5-2-Butoxyethanol. This chemical is a powerful solvent, and A RANGE OF CHEMICAL FREE has a characteristic sweet smell. SUNSCREENS USING PLANT EXTRACTS 5-2-Butoxyethanol is commonly found sunumbra® sunscreens are all natural in window, kitchen and multipurpose containing organic ingredients which ensure... cleaners. When inhaled in high levels it has been linked to sore throats, severe liver and kidney damage, as well as pulmonary edema. BE ECONOMICAL If you actually laid out all of your skin and body care, and household products, then it may become clear that we are simply going overboard. Often you can simplify your life hugely! Skincare regimens can become a lot easier when you’re using natural products. When you make the switch to natural products you may find that your skin clears and begins to need less “treatments” to cleanse your pores or remove blackheads because your skin can finally breathe. When it comes to your nightly skincare you can simply use coconut oil as your makeup remover, then a WOW cloth as your cleanser, thus eliminating the need for a makeup

SUMMER AND THE UPSET STOMACH DR ROSIE CAREY - THE WELLNESS FAMILY PRACICE
S
UMMER seems to have arrived in Ballito at last, but unfortunately a few horrible lurgies have come with the heat. Infectious gastroenteritis is traditionally more prevalent in summer, but you don’t have to ruin your holiday fun by running to the toilet every 5 minutes if you follow some simple guidelines. Infectious gastroenteritis can be caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites and we see all three in Durban.
VIRAL GASTRO: Viruses are the most common cause of gastroenteritis. The four most common viruses are Norovirus, Rotavirus, Astrovirus and Adenovirus and all of them are spread via contact with contaminated faeces. The gastroenteritis is often accompanied
by high fevers, body aches and general malaise. There isn’t too much that we can do to treat viral gastroenteritis; management is mostly symptomatic and consists of keeping rehydrated and treating the fever. Hospital admission may be required, especially in younger children, if fluid intake can’t be maintained. BACTERIAL GASTROENTERITIS: Bacterial gastroenteritis is most commonly caused by eating undercooked meat or eggs or drinking contaminated water. Faecal spread from person to person is also common. Most bacterial gastroenteritis can be treated symptomatically with hydration and electrolytes, however severe or prolonged cases may require antibiotics. Again, if fluids can’t be kept down, admission may be necessary. Parasitic gastroenteritis: Parasites such as Giardia can cause the symptoms of gastroenteritis and these infections are often more chronic. If they are long standing they can have

complications so if you have gastroenteritis for longer than a week, you should have a stool sample sent away for analysis to exclude a parasitic infection. Treatment is specific for the parasite and may consist of deworming tablets or antibiotics. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT GASTROENTERITIS There are simple but effective measures that you can take to prevent gastroenteritis. • HANDWASHING: wash your hands after going to the toilet, after touching animals, after touching anyone who has gastroenteritis and before eating. Make sure that you wash your hands with soap and running water to eliminate any infectious organisms. I usually carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser with me in my handbag for those times when there is no facility to wash my hands. • WASH YOUR FOOD: make sure that you rinse and fruit and vegetables properly before eating them. • COOK YOUR MEAT PROPERLY: avoid raw eggs and undercooked meat (especially pork and chicken) • EAT PASTEURIZED DAIRY PRODUCTS ONLY. • BE AWARE OF THE SOURCE OF THE WATER THAT YOU ARE DRINKING. Remember that even a few droplets
of contaminated water (think of water splashing onto the top of your drinking bottle for example) can infect you. Likewise, use only ice that is suitable for consumption- not all ice is and unfortunately the alcohol in your sundowner cocktail probably isn’t enough to kill the bugs if your ice is contaminated! • REMEMBER TO DEWORM YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PETS REGULARLY. WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO GET GASTROENTERITIS Initial management of gastroenteritis is usually symptomatic, so the focus should be on keeping down fluids and replacing lost electrolytes. There are rehydration solutions such as Rehydrate available for this purpose. Toxin-binding substances such as Smecta and Tasectan can also reduce the severity of the symptoms and duration of illness. If fluid balance cannot be maintained, you need to visit your doctor. These tips apply equally for travel diarrhoea, so hopefully wherever you spend your holiday, it won’t be in the bathroom! The Wellness Family Pracice The Well 032 9461333

MOOIMAAK MAKEOVERS: hardworking nurse with a big heart for charity work, Yvonne Nell grew up in a children’s home which is why, today, there’s nothing she cherishes more than her family. While her life is full of love, she never really felt confident in her skin because, while taking care of everyone else, she’d often neglect herself. The result was a complexion marked by the scars from a bout of acne in her youth, deep-seated wrinkles and a severe loss of volume.
Still, this was nothing KykNET’s Mooimaak team couldn’t tackle. Over the period of three months, Yvonne underwent a series of treatments led by Skin Renewal’s Dr. Graham Duncombe and therapist Liza Schoeman and the results are nothing short of stunning.
SAY GOODBYE TO SCARS
Skin Renewal tackled Yvonne’s acne scarring with multiple treatments including laser, light and subcision. The latter sees the insertion of a special needle just below a concave scar to break up the fibrous bands that tether it to the underlying tissue. This relieves the ‘hollow’ look and inspires the growth of new connective tissue that plumps from below. Laser-wise, the mighty Fraxel Dual did a lot of the heavy lifting. As it removes microscopic columns of damaged skin while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue untouched it promotes rapid healing. This sees your body replace what’s old and damaged with healthy and new, so it also went a long way to improving her wrinkles and skin texture. Talk about a great multi-tasker!
The transformation
A LOVELY-LOOKING LIFT
In the past, lifting lax skin meant enduring a surgery but now, thanks to PDO threads, Yvonne could benefit from a knife-free face lift that saw strategically injected threads (sutures) create a vector that lifts. After eight months, the threads dissolve but the new collagen stimulated by their presence means results can last as long as three years. The broom, another type of PDO thread, was used on Yvonne’s nose along with a little dermal filler to help straighten it and create a smootherlooking profile. Referred to as a 3D rhinoplasty, it’s essentially a knife-free nose job with no down time!
PUMP UP THE VOLUME
Last but not least, Dr. Duncombe administered a 3D Liquid Facelift to restore the volume to Yvonne’s face. Another knife-free procedure, it involves strategically injecting dermal fillers to areas that have lost volume as well as the use of botulinum toxin to smooth out lines in the upper half of the face. Once Yvonne’s treatment journey was over, her stunning transformation didn’t just give her a more youthful look, but a regained sense of self. ‘I realised that when you’re comfortable in your own skin, you’re beautiful’, she said. ‘Confidence is the best makeup you could ever wear’. WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT TMAN’S APPLE CIDER VINEGAR? Vinegar has way more uses than just a salad dressing this Christmas!
A
CONCOCTION of apple cider vinegar and spices does wonders to the taste of a salad, but for many the thought of drinking vinegar may send shivers down their spine! However for many centuries Apple Cider Vinegar has been valued for its medicinal properties.

With this potent mixture of good bacteria and digestive enzymes taken before your large Christmas meals (and afterwards, if necessary) can aid in digestion of your food adequately preventing bloating, gas and indigestion. Tman’s Apple Cider Vinegar is raw, unfiltered and unpasteurised, made from traditional methods of crushed apples fermented in tanks for 2-3 months, as a result it has a warm red clouded appearance with brown stringy sediment that collects at the bottom called the ‘Mother Enzymes’.
These living enzymes and are largely responsible for many of the beneficial properties in vinegar. At Tman’s we add Trace Minerals unique to our Apple cider Vinegar. These include, iron, zinc and magnesium which assist in revitalizing and restoring your body and prevents regular illness How do you take Tman’s Apple Cider Vinegar? The Benefits of INFANT HYDROTHERAPY
B
efore your baby is old enough to walk, it may seem silly to take them swimming; but there are so many benefits to splashing around and gliding through the water — besides the fact that your little one looks super cute in a swimming costume.
Studies demonstrate that spending time in the pool helps babies become more self-confident and intelligent (yes, really!). Being in the water engages your baby’s tiny body in a completely unique way, creating billions of new neurons as
your sweetie kicks, glides, and smacks at the water. You don’t want to wait too long to introduce your baby to the pool — children who don’t get their feet wet until later tend to be more fearful and negative about swimming. Younger children are also usually less resistant to floating on their backs, a key life-saving strategy that even some babies can master! Here’s the lowdown on the amazing benefits of infant hydrotherapy. •Swimming Improves Cognitive Functioning •Bilateral cross-patterning movements, which use both sides of the body to carry out an action, help your baby’s brain grow. •Cross-patterning movements build neurons throughout the brain, but especially in the corpus callosum, which facilitates communication, feedback, and modulation from one side of the brain to another.
Down the road, this improves: •Reading skills •Language development •Academic learning •Spatial awareness •When swimming, your baby moves their arms while kicking their legs. And your cutie is doing these actions in water, which means their brain is registering the tactile sensation of water plus its resistance. Swimming is also a unique social experience, which furthers its brain-boosting power. •Swimming Improves Confidence Most infant classes include elements like water play, songs, and skin-to-skin contact with parents or caregivers. Children interact with one another and the instructor and begin to learn to function in groups. These elements, plus the fun of learning a new skill, boost your baby’s selfesteem. •Drowning Prevention Many people believe that infant swim time makes young children too comfortable in the water, thereby increasing drowning risks, but this is simply not true. In children aged 1 to 4, swimming lessons have been found to significantly reduce a child’s risk of drowning. As long as you’re taking all the necessary precautions and giving your baby your undivided attention, swim time can be perfectly safe. Another benefit to infant swimming is that it’s a wonderful parent-child bonding experience. In our hectic,
fast-paced world, slowing down to simply enjoy an experience together is rare. Swim lessons with our babies brings us into the present moment while teaching them important life skills. So, grab your swim nappy and jump in!

Reaching for comfort food during the holidays Most people overeat as a result of stress and not actual hunger. We are biologically wired to reach for comfort food when we are stressed and

The silly season can be a nervewracking time for people trying to lose weight, so try these tips and tricks to beat the bulge during the holidays. Put your food on a smaller plate Studies show that the bigger the plate, the more food people serve, so opt for the side plate to control your portions. Keep exercising Even if you only schedule short interval training throughout the day, stay active and keep moving. Start off strong Start the day with a healthy breakfast. A bowl of cooked oats will keep you feeling fuller for longer – reducing your chances of overeating. Limit your alcohol intake If you must drink, opt to drink from a tall and narrow glass to drink less. According to studies we consume more liquid when we drink form a short, wide glass compared to a tall and narrow one. Avoid mindless eating Don’t eat while distracted such as when watching TV. Rather sit down at the table to eat which forces you to focus on what you are eating and portion control.

CONSUMER WATCH GLENDA THOMPSON -CONSUMER COLUMN
Hi Everyone, Just moments away from Christmas Day and it’s time to start unwinding and having fun! We thought we’d do a totally stress free column this week and get you to bring Christmas into the garden… and the garden into the home with these super gardening décor ideas from South Africa’s Gardening Guru, TV personality and author, Tanya Visser Fun ideas for the festive season It’s always the simple and thoughtful touches you do in and around the house that make your guests feel special, and it’s so rewarding and fun too! Light up the garden – String fairy lights all over the garden. Wind them around tree trunks, along the gutters of the house and in the windows of the sitting room. Decorate your garden trees – Hang bright and shiny baubles and other Christmassy things on the branches of your trees. Add some colourful hanging baskets and wind chimes too. Plant bright colour indoors – Fill your house with poinsettias, moth orchids in flower and flowering hydrangeas, which are now in full bloom. Windowsill and table top pretties – Tie festive ribbons around the stems of old wine glasses and pop some echeveria rosettes with short stems into them. If you can lay your hands on olive tree branches, fill jugs and vases with them for greenery indoors. You can also arrange foliage that does not wilt easily, like pennygum branches, in vases, or use it to make wreaths to decorate your rooms. These leaves have a lovely fresh smell. Cute little bouquets – Tie bunches of aromatic herbs like rosemary, sage, lavender and mint together with festive ribbons. Also add some cinnamon sticks. Display them in glass jars all over the house. Small pots of goodies – Paint little clay pots gold or silver with craft paint. Once dry, add
a little glue around their rims and dip them in glitter (available at craft stores). When they’re dry, fill them with sweets and nuts. GREEN GIFT IDEAS: For Dad: To turn the garden’s organic waste, like leaves, grass clippings, and prunings, into compost, dad needs a smart compost bin and handy compost activator to speed things up. To recycle all food waste safely and to improve the quality of the garden soil even more, he will also need a bokashi composter and a packet of bokashi bran or liquid bokashi. For Mom: Mandevilla ‘Cosmos White’ is a lovely climber with big white flowers with a yellow throat. It blooms non-stop and is perfect for the garden, growing over a trellis or an arch, but also stunning on patios and balconies in a pot. This mandevilla requires little water and prefers a location with full sun or partial shade. For Gran or the Aunts: They will love some colourful coleus hybrids to turn the floor of their garden into a tapestry of leaf colour. Coleus plants are regarded as summer annuals since they do not take kindly to cold and frost. They are available in the gaudiest leaf colours and are very easy to grow. Plant them in compost-enriched soil in light shade, and do not overwater. For more on gardening goodies, visit www.tanyavisser.com Happy gardening and Merry Christmas!
as all the facilities on offer within Zululami. Whether you are looking to invest or live in Zululami, Aura and The Reserve make for a magnificent opportunity that speaks to individuals who enjoy connecting with nature and exploring the outdoors.

2019 SILVERBACK
SESTA PRO EAGLE REVIEW – CONCENTRATED MTB SPEED
TOYOTA ETIOS CROSS –
A SUPER CHOICE FOR FUN IN
THE SUN
M JOEL MEINTJES
T
HE 2019 Silverback SESTA Pro Eagle, is packed with tonnes of concentrated speed. It lives up to Silverback’s ‘born to be fast’ mantra, in absolute style. And for 2019, the brand has pulled out all the stops in technology, to get you as the rider on that No. 1 podium spot!
This is the SRAM Eagle iteration of the SESTA Pro series. 12 gears strong, and its geared up for hard, heartpumping XC racing and untamed stage races like the Absa Cape Epic. Iconic Frame-set Silverback extended their engineering, to supply the 2019 SESTA PRO in a fully carbon fibre frame. From the main triangle, down to the suspension linkage – everything on this frame is made from carbon. Overall, the frame material provided some aggressive stiffness. Gears & No Fears The 1×12 SRAM Eagle drivetrain, consisted of an XO1 Eagle rear derailleur, XO1 Eagle 12spd cassette, GX Eagle crank set, and shifters. The XO1 Eagle drive-train units, are much lighter than the standard GX Eagle units The entire gear system was certainly snappy enough to get us up
technical climbs, and down the other side at good speed. The Ride: Silverback’s unique approach to the design of the suspension eliminates that pedal-bob effect and therefore there is no energy loss when turning the cranks. As previously mentioned, the SESTA’s steering was spot on through technical terrain. When we had been ridding for a long time, the bike still managed to maintain that same feel for manoeuvrability. The condensed frame design, made switch-backs more fun to ride through as well. Verdict: Overall the 2019 SESTA PRO Eagle, was lightweight on climbs, quick and nimble on descends. And an exceptional energy saver on the long rides. We’d say get the SESTA PRO Eagle if you want a XC/Marathon bike that’s superbly reliable to dominate. This SRAM Eagle version of the SESTA Pro was exactly what we were gnawing patiently for! But the wait is over. From now on we have found a bike that delivers concentrated mountain biking speed, with no hesitation! RRP: R 65 000

its design, thanks to the skid plate at the front and the plastic cladding. Complementing the ride are the 15-inch alloy wheels in diamond-cut design. Ready to take the fight to the likes of VW’s Polo Cross and Renault’s Sandero Stepway, this baby crossover will still sport the familiar 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, found in the rest of the Etios range. Producing 66kW of power and 132Nm of torque, it’s a reliable motor that feels preppy and will propel the car from standstill to 100km/h in approximately 11.3 seconds, strolling to a top speed of 165km/h. It’s the functionality coupled with good fuel consumption figures of roughly 6 litres/100km that is winning fans by the score. As South Africans, we do love the outdoors, and if our car is dressed in the
Nothing really changes under the skin. The Etios suspension is the same but does gain a couple of millimetres of extra ground clearance. Essentially, it doesn’t disappoint in ride delivery; the chassis is well sorted and will soak up the bumps. But the increased ride-height does change the handling dynamics through the corners, ever so slightly. Ultimately, the Etios Cross certainly looks the part with its crossover styling. Throw into the mix Toyota’s reliability and you have a proper aggressive hatch that’ll look great in the city. The Etios Cross comes with ToyotaCare’s two-year/30 000km service plan and three-year/100 000km warranty.
Not happy with dominating in just the small hatch segment, Toyota pumped up the Etios by placing it on stilts and slapping on some rugged SUV-type bits, like roof rails and a rear spoiler along with a new “cross grille” in the front. It does look rather menacing in
