BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

hitting the high notes

I

WAS recently motivated to sit down at a piano again after 15 odd years of not touching an instrument, and I confess, it’s giving me serious food for thought. I was a student of the arts; writing, music, and literature was part of my everyday life. Then being a grown-up got in the way. I started working to relentless print deadlines. Climbing corporate ladders. I got married. I had two children. They got sick. I got sick. I went into survival mode. And my creativity evaporated into the ether of adulthood.

What to do 24 May – 01 June: Dig this Gig

Zakifo Music Festival is an extended event, running over two weekends with some incredible local and international talent lined up at varying venues from The Winston to the Durban Botanic Gardens. Catch US superstar Ben Harper, while the likes of Sho Madjozi, Beatenburg and Durban-born singing sensation Red Robyn will also light up the stage. (Catch our exclusive interview with her on page 11.) Go to Facebook @zakifofest or visit zakifo. com for tickets.

25 May: Colour Chucker

This month I love...

The Bloom School in Salt Rock does incredible work for children with special needs, and their annual Colour Run and Family Fun Day helps raise much-needed funds. The event is at Sugar Rush Park, and the costs are R150 per adult, R90 for children under 12, available from webtickets.co.za. The first 200 entries on Webtickets get a free Bloom T-shirt. There’s a 5km run or walk, or a 1km free forest walk for toddlers. Registration is from 9:30am.

Our editor-in-chief and 88FM Afternoon Drive show host, Dave Charles, as many locals will already know, is not only a music enthusiast, he’s also a musician, and a talented one at that. With a life-long career in media and radio, it goes without saying that music is a big part of his life, but if any of you have caught his live sets at The Ballito Lifestyle Centre, you can attest to his skill with a guitar. Sharing office space with a musician who takes a few moments out of his day to play, has reminded me of the necessity of a creative outlet in one’s life. We get so engrossed in the mundanity of everyday life; school runs, groceries, paying the bills, meeting the deadlines; and then I hear Dave strumming away quietly, even if it’s just for a few moments, and it reminds me to take pause. Tom Petty confessed that, “Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There’s not some

trick involved with it. It’s pure and it’s real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things.” Now when I get home from work, my children and I sit at the piano. We play a silly game of giants and fairies, with the giants thumping around in the lower octaves, and the fairies flitting across the higher keys, creating our own escapist musical theatre, before jumping back into our regular evening routine. On page 11, I interview a young musician and recent UKZN graduate from the Bluff, who’s made music her life, and has landed a coveted spot on the Zakifo Music Festival line-up with the likes of Grammy Award winner and bona fide rock star, Ben Harper. I was mesmerised by both Red Robyn’s music and the video for her new single, ‘The Pits’, which is a haunting reminder of childhood innocence, contrasted by a gritty Durban backdrop. She has the enviable (and challenging) task of making art professionally, and she’s definitely one to watch. Speaking of challenges, for those of you tackling this year’s uphill fitness behemoth that is the 2019 Comrades Marathon, we have some essential info; running coach Dave Flood gives us his last-minute tips and advice, as well as what to pack, and medical doctor and four-times Comrades runner Dr. Rosie Carey breaks down your final days before the big day on page eight and nine. Also check out our pick of Comrades shopping from local suppliers on page 10. (Your body will thank you later!) So we invite you to find your outlet, whether it be art or running, and break from the sometimes tedious rhythm of your day. Perhaps it’s just a tea break with your copy of Life & Style! Until next time,

This is what you need to know; it’s important to ask yourself “Do I have a thorough understanding of the residential tenancies act and other associated statutes?” This is a highly specialised aspect of real estate and it is fraught with the danger of litigation in almost every task you undertake. A competent property manager not only possesses a strong understanding of their role, they continually increase their knowledge of insurance requirements, changes to legislation, and industry and market trends to ensure all clients achieve the highest level of service at all times. As the temperature dips and the infamous sugarcane starts to burn, allergies, sinusitis and head colds become more prevalent. Short of dousing the surgarcane flames, there’s sadly not a whole lot we can do about these circumstances, but DIY and décor guru Allen Petrie has some practical ways to ease your suffering.

I

t’s hard to enjoy your beautiful home while clutching a box of tissues, your eyes are watering, and it feels like your runny nose has a will of its own.

For so many people, this is a reality. And living where we do, we also have to contend with airborne ash from cane burning, dust from the ceaseless construction, and pollen counts that make Lotto numbers look tiny. And so the battle begins. If you or your family members suffer from allergies caused by pets, dust, mould, hay fever, dust mites or pollen allergens, then this article is for you. Is it possible to make our homes less allergic, without them looking like a medical ward? The answer, luckily, is yes. There are steps you can take that will minimise the amount of allergens in your home. Floors and walls Replace carpets with hardwood, tiles, or laminate floors. Yes, it costs more, but your nose will thank you. Also, laminate

flooring is really beautiful and adds its own warmth to your home. Replace curtains with blinds (If you keep the curtains, dry clean them regularly or use washable curtains made of plain cotton or synthetic fabric). If you are having curtains made, make sure to keep your lining separate to your curtains to make dry cleaning more effective. Replace natural fibre rugs with synthetic rugs. They’re super easy to clean; think hose pipe and broom, and you’re done! Pillows, scatter cushions, and bedding Either replace feathered pillow/scatter inners with fibre curl; or make sure your feathered inners have been treated for dust mites. You can also add a protective cover beneath the pretty decorative casing. For upholstered fabrics (curtains, couches etc.) clean regularly – use water filtered vacuum cleaners or cleaners with a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. If your pets sleep on your bed (because they’re your fluffy children) get

a large throw to cover the bed, which can protect your bed linen. Encase pillows, mattresses and box springs in dust-mite-proof covers. Wash sheets, pillowcases and blankets at least once a week in water heated to at least 54°C. Remove, wash or cover comforters. Replace wool or feather bedding with synthetic materials. Gadgets Install a dehumidifier in the home to cleanse the air. If you don’t have central airconditioning, this is a must. For a relatively low cost, the air in your home will be cleaner, less humid and everything will be drier. An Ozone machine is another great device for removing impurities from the air. A tiny, quiet box that sucks in O2 and pushes out O3, will quickly remove smells and mould spores etc. Just make sure you ventilate the room or space well afterwards as inhaling O3 can be harmful to your health – do your research before purchasing one. Plants and natural options Get plants such as the peace lily, dracena, bamboo palms, or philodendrons, which are easily available to clean the air and help absorb chemicals such as

formaldehyde, benzene and ammonia in your home. NASA discovered that some house plants not only absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but they also eliminate significant amounts of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and other chemicals from the air. Regularly wash down surfaces, with a vinegar and water mix to remove mould. Temperature and humidity Hot, humid houses are breeding grounds for dust mites and mould. Maintain the temperature between 20°C and 22°C and keep relative humidity no higher than 50 percent. Clean or replace small-particle filters in central heating, cooling systems and air conditioners at least once a month. So you see, there’s a lot that can be done about allergies without compromising the look of your home. It also needn’t be done all at once. Try some of the options above and see what works for you and your family. Maybe all the money you save on nasal sprays helps to pay for that gorgeous set of cushions at that décor store you like!

Intrepid beach manager Seaweed Steve Honneysett headed north to Zinkwazi for a beach break of a different kind. Zinkwazi is a little treasure trove only 45 minutes up the freeway. One might think it’s a bit too close to home but the variety of activities and change of scenery makes it a worthwhile getaway. Being on the beach and having a lagoon next to it opens up one’s activities to a number of water sports that can be enjoyed, even if you don’t have all the toys. The caravan park and lagoon resort is now under new management, and I was blown away by the work that has gone on to upgrade it. New restaurants and an outside bar are some of the features, as well as new jetties on the lagoon where one can moor one’s boat. If you don’t have your own boat, not to worry, the resort has three ferries which transport guests to the beach and back, and for a fee, one can join the ever popular sun set cruise up river to enjoy one of the best reasons to live in Africa. The eight kilometre trip up and down the river is truly amazing, with a variety of bird life and a few jumping fish putting on a show too. There are camp sites and three bedroom chalets available, which are very comfortable. I had my weekend pre-planned, with surfing as number one on my list, but if that was not to be then I had plenty of back up plans. Hiking, fishing and paddling up the lagoon and river are all things that you need to do when visiting Zinkwazi. As it unfolded, the surf was not cooperating with me, so I took a lengthy walk up to the Nonoti Lagoon, which is about a five kilometre walk from the main beach heading south, and another five kilometres back, taking along my fishing rod and my tea pot to help pass the time. Many might say that Seaweed can’t fish, which is largely true, but I call it casting which is quite relaxing on its own. There is really a lot to cram in over

a two-day weekend, but you need to spend the time exploring the place to get a true feel. I walked past Kingsley Holgate’s house with the sign outside stating one should slow down for elephants crossing the road. Amusing to say the least. The Ski Boat Club is always a hive of activity and a really nice spot to chill and have a beverage or a meal on their deck, with a view that makes you feel like you could be in Mozambique. The Pizza place, run by Prout, has been re-vamped with a nice deck up in the beach car park. Zinkwazi is also a Fat Bike paradise with miles of flat beach. You can ride in both directions, and they also have a few trails to tackle before breakfast. Unfortunately the weekend passes too quickly, so I’ll have to return to Zinkwazi to tackle the hike through the dune forest, out to the Tugela River which is around a 16 kilometre round trip. If you want a piece of heaven close to home, then Zinkwazi is for you.

Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf Report on Mike in the Morning and The Afternoon Drive on 88FM.

LE PETITE JARDIN

Small garden? No problem! Life & Style’s green-fingered guru, Tracey Miller-Smith from Eco Balance Landscaping, has expert advice on big style for small spaces.

T

HOSE of you who have been living on the North Coast for several years will have noticed a definite shift towards more apartment-style living with smaller gardens, mainly in courtyards or around groundfloor apartments.

Here are five top tips on how to maximise your space in a small garden. 1. Level up Raised and sunken levels in gardens have been around for centuries, but with some clever modern adaptions in materials used, they help us to make great use of a small space. Consider how a set of wooden stairs leading down to a grassed area, with concrete seating and a table as the centrepiece, creates a very useful, peaceful space. Equally, walking out onto a raised deck, arranged with containers dripping with aromatic jasmine creepers, to watch the sunrise or sunset, adds a ‘country feel’ to any small garden. Different levels created using different materials, add different depth perspectives, shows a creative flair and adds a spacious feel. Create split levels by using retaining wall blocks, wooden planting boxes, small concrete walls, wooden decking, or even rock or stone packed walls. 2. Light up your life In a small garden, integrated lighting will add a charming elegance and an element of depth. Use of lighting will also mean that you get to use your garden in the evenings, giving it additional life. There are various lights or lighting effects that you can use in your small garden: • Smart spotlights that are sensor-activated. • Solar lighting along pathways or other areas that get lots of daylight to power the solar batteries. •Uplighters that can accentuate your building design. •Lighting inside or around water features. • Fairy lights hung from rooves or around structures like pillars. •Candles! Don’t forget what a wonderfully romantic effect a candle has in a secluded garden on starry night. 3. Fire pits Don’t you just love sitting around a warm fireplace with friends on a cool, crisp evening? Firepits add an attractive flair to any outdoor area. If you’re building a fire pit, remember these three safety tips: • They should be constructed from fireproof material on a flat, level area away from any trees, shrubs or building.

Visit ecobalance.co.za or call 032 815 1172. Catch Tracey Miller-Smith’s ‘sage’ advice every fortnight on the 88FM Afternoon Drive with Dave Charles.

• Surround them with a border of into the material used to create sand, gravel or stones. • Find out what the building regulations are in your area applicable to building a fire pit, and adhere strictly to them. 4. Opt for gravel over grass Small gardens lend themselves to low-maintenance areas. It would be wise to consider replacing higher-maintenance grass with gravel or concrete pavers. The great thing about these is that you can tailor the colour of the stone or pavers to suit your palette. Gravel and stone paving come in all colours, and great contrast can be achieved using terracotta or white pebble stones against the bright colours of your outdoor seating, or the soft gentle green or your garden. 5. Go low or go high Of course, don’t forget the plants! It’s easy to get really creative with container gardening in a small garden. By using the available variety of pots, containers and hanging baskets to showcase your chosen greenery, it’s easy to get a lot of life into your small garden. It’s also a great idea to plant

split levels, for example planting into your retaining wall, or wooden planters. Cement walls used to create different levels can also be built in such a manner to become planters.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT HIGH SCHOOL Ashton College managing director Joe Erasmus shares his insight into selecting the right school for your child, and highlights new developments at Ashton.

I

T is that time of the year when most parents have made the difficult decision of selecting a high school for their child or children as they move onto the next phase of their school journey. Tradition still seems to play a critical role when a school is selected, but there has been a definite shift towards seeking different avenues as times have changed and offerings closer to home are coming into play. This could be for various reasons but that is a topic for another day. I am a firm believer that there is a school for every child and it is incumbent on parents to do their homework on what best suits the child. One should look at the bigger picture as opposed to selecting one. Probably,

Here at Ashton, with our Christian Ethos and family-driven values, we believe in the holistic growth of every student who has the potential to shine in their desired area. ‘Every child is Worthy’ and we all are uniquely different, displaying our different talents. Our role is to enhance and create the opportunities for each student to grow to their full potential. Having come from a traditional monastic school, we sometimes get caught up in the euphoria of sporting results and as such judge the school around that specific result. Win or lose. At the same time, we become oblivious to all the other aspects of which make school life so rewarding and refreshing. There are just so many other areas of school life that encourages pride

We kicked off with a meet and greet session at the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and congratulated Andy Horton, a lawyer and founder board member who has taken over as the new president of the Chamber, and Lesa Bradshaw, the vice chair. Lesa is an award-winning businesswoman and managing member of Bradshaw LeRoux Consulting. Naturally, one of the focuses of the Chamber is tourism and it would be good to see more tourist focused events coming to this little corner of paradise! If you would like to join the Ilembe Chamber – and it’s well worth it as they have some excellent business workshops, contact ntombifuthi@ilembechamber.co.za Still on the subject of travel, I attended the May Umhlanga Women Achievers evening and listened to guest speaker, Jen Morris, who is a senior travel professional based in KZN, talk about the trials and tribulations of setting up her own travel company. The gift sponsor for the night was the law firm, Araujo Attorneys who are based in Umhlanga and Ballito. Incidentally, this is an excellent networking forum and if you would like to join, contact info@umhlangawomenahievers.co.za.

The Tash B Pilates Studio was a very specific brief for M&M Design, and they settled on a greenhouse effect in the entrance.

At the helm of M&M Designs is a couple whose combined talents have taken each of them from studying footwear in Milan to showcasing their interiors on popular TV show Top Billing. Despite their frenetic travel schedule, they’ve set up shop in Ballito, with one of their latest briefs being the transformation of a local Pilates studio.

M

EETING Michele and Mark Metior in their mixed-use retail space and offices at The Quarter shopping centre in Ballito is quite a creative whirlwind. They travel the country transforming spaces into things of beauty, and we soon get the feeling they don’t sit still for long.

Both Michele and Mark are African born, with their families hailing from Belgium. Michele grew up in KZN with her final schooling years being in the Eastern Cape, while Mark grew up between Africa and Europe. Their diverse backgrounds have contributed to their design ethos, as their projects have a noticeable global aesthetic. However, they’re adamant about forging their own path for their clients, rather than following trends. “Michele’s first venture into interior design was in the late 1990s, with the restoration and renovation of a Victorian wrap-around veranda home built in 1908,” explains Mark. “It soon became evident that the ability to offer clients a full turnkey service would become the foundation of M&M Design,” he adds. “Working closely with clients and contractors over a period of 20-odd years, Michele’s natural knowledge and ability in translating dreams into reality is enviable.” “For me,” explains Mark, “being born into a family of cobblers and having a creative mind, the obvious choice growing up was footwear design. I completed my studies in Milan in the late 1970’s, and my career in footwear spanned 27 years.” “As M&M grew, I found myself being drawn into projects, and really enjoyed the opportunity of exploring new creative ventures with my clear understanding of design, proportion and a love for detail. The opportunity of Michele and I working together became my focus and in 2007 this became a reality.” Their favourite projects are without a doubt full turnkey projects, but each job tends to be unique. “Our work ranges from theatrically inspired retail projects to boutique lodges, and from contemporary homes through to classical homes. At the end, it’s all about the ability of translating a client’s dream into a reality,” he adds. One of Mark and Michele’s most recent projects was the incredible space Tash B Pilates has relocated to, also at The Quarter shopping centre “Tash was very specific about her requirements. Her need to create a space with the right synergy for her team and clients alike was paramount,” explains Mark. “The location of the studio was also a big

factor, with its large windows offering views of our rolling green hills was inspiring. The location has a warehouse feel so this also became a focus on the final design. We built on the industrial feel by bringing in commercial factory windows as partitioning in the interior. Dark grey walls and timber floors continued this feel. The only challenge left was to bring in the lush feel of the countryside. After some research we found a vintage wallpaper of a tropical l’orangerie (Greenhouse) which replicated the exact feel we wanted, adding in cascading plants above the reception, and jazzed up industrial light-fitting completed the picture. The space is tranquil, uncomplicated and current.” The cosmopolitan studio really has to be seen to be believed, and if M&M Design’s primary intent is indeed to ‘shape a space’ and reflect the spirit of the people who inhabit the place, then the studio is a prime example of their talents.

The Pilates studio incorporates industrial colours and accents, but maintains a tranquil environment.

WHAT THE DOC SAYS... Comrades is the highlight of many road runner’s calendars. This year it falls on 9 June and is an ‘up’ run from Durban to Pietermaritzberg. Dr Rosie Carey, our in-house medical doctor and athlete extraordinaire, offers her expert advice on running the race of a lifetime.

H

AVING only run four Comrades Marathons myself, I wouldn’t presume to give anyone advice about the actual running of the race, however, I can help with how to prepare your body physically and mentally in the couple of weeks leading up to the big day.

GET ENOUGH SHUT-EYE I can’t emphasise enough how important sleep is as preparation for Comrades. While you sleep, your body secretes growth hormone, which helps to repair and enhance muscle tissue. Immune modulators are released which optimise the activity of your immune system and help to prevent you getting sick. You would most likely have a sleep deficit at this point (early morning wake up calls to train are normal for most Comrades runners). Catching up on sleep now while you are tapering is very beneficial and will help to optimise your body in preparation for race day. So, don’t feel guilty to sleep in, and make sure you have plenty of early nights.

vigilant about your water/fluid intake so that you enter the race well hydrated. You may want to sip on an electrolyte drink as well to make sure that your electrolytes are not depleted on the start line. Most importantly, don’t eat or drink anything new or unusual during the week leading up to Comrades.

KEEP HEALTHY There are always loads of cartoons that do the rounds before Comrades showing people walking around with face masks on, but this isn’t such a bad idea (although you may get some strange looks). Just prior to Comrades or on the day is when you least want to get sick; ironically it’s also the time you’re most likely to get sick. Your body fat is low, you are most likely a bit sleep deprived and it’s the start of winter colds and flu season so there are lots of bugs doing the rounds. It’s the perfect maelstrom for getting sick. You can minimise your chances of getting sick by: AVOID THE TEMPTATION TO RUN HARD OR FAR •Eating and sleeping well After many months of hard training, your •Avoiding sick people or very crowded body probably feels like a finely tuned engine, rooms (if you find yourself stuck in a crowded but avoid the temptation to run long or hard room, open the windows to get fresh air runs during your taper period. H

ave you done enough mileage? Is it too late to make up? These questions may be ‘racing’ through your mind, but all the high mileage should be over now, and nothing you do in the next few weeks will make much difference to your race.

It is better to be slightly undertrained and feel strong, than overtrained and washed out on race day. Don’t blow it now! Start to slowly cut mileage down and taking it easier. I suggest no long runs over 25 kilometres. I recommend you do a couple of shorter runs at your race pace to get the feel of it. Try and stay healthy by avoiding people

with colds and flu, and take vitamin C supplements. Nutrition wise, eat healthy meals including fruit and vegetables. I suggest a neurobion injection a week before the race. Don’t be heroic and try something new at this stage. Trust what you have been doing so far, and avoid tempting new products coming out, which may not agree with you. Mental training will be important now – rehearsing in your mind before going to sleep, setting goal times that you hope to achieve, but be realistic with this. A 3.45 marathon time will not get you a silver medal, so don’t ruin your race by trying to achieve it. Don’t try compression garments just because someone else says they work. I stress once again... nothing new on the

It was through church that, as a child, she she met an Argentinian missionary, who gifted her a guitar and taught her just three chords, further cementing her desire to make music. “I remember being five or six years old and just needing to write a song. Her postgraduate studies included an investigation into the boundaries of Christian music. This month we visited...

GETTING TO KNOW…

As an apprentice at Terry Scott and Gerald Wells in Umhlanga, Pretoria native Donovan Sutherland is now a huge asset to the team at Gerald Wells Ballito.

Umgeni River Bird Park is spread over 3.5 hectares of tropical vegetation and aviaries, housing some 800 birds, and as Life & Style discovered, it’s an essential day trip for everyone to experience, at least once.

D

D

esigned and built by Dr Alan Abrey, and originally an old quarry in Durban North, Umgeni River Bird Park first opened its doors in April 1984 by the then mayor of Durban, Councillor Sybil Hotz.

ONAVON SUTHERLAND has only been a stylist for six years, but he’s racked up a few milestones along the way. After an apprenticeship at Terry Scott and Gerald Wells, Umhlanga, he began his formal training at Coastal College, Durban, where he won best student of 2015.

Today, it’s experienced many ups and downs, and it seems acquiring funding is a constant struggle, but the birds are well looked after thanks to some dedicated staff. It’s an incredible day visit for children especially, where they can not only see both foreign and local species up close in a caged environment, there is also plenty of opportunity to interact with birds in open enclosures, as well as the free-flight bird show (be sure to check the website ahead of time for show times, which are also weatherpermitting). Sadly, some species are the only remaining representatives of their kind in Africa, and it’s an important lesson for children to see the effects of human development on wildlife. Gaia is a particular highlight, as the last hornbill of her species left in Africa. The free-flight show includes owls, a vulture and even

an enormous pelican. There’s no shortage of comedy and delight, coupled with essential information on the species, their habitats, food, and vulnerability. The flamingo enclosure is another highlight, as is the spectacular Scarlett Ibis. Bring a few extra R5 coins to feed the swans and for nectar to hand-feed the Our only suggestion is to bring a change of shirt and a wet wipe or two, just in case you’re the chosen target for the day’s ablutions! The Cockataoo Café offers snacks and drinks, and you can also book for children’s parties. During school holidays there are new tailor-made programmes available.

The park is open every day from 9am to 5pm, (except Christmas Day), but make sure you bring cash as they have no credit card facilities. Call 031 322 5750 or visit the brand new website at urbp.co.za. Entry costs range between R32 for pensioners and R58 for adults.

Another career highlight includes being part of the Gerald Wells team during the Durban Stylist and Salon Competition, finishing in an impressive second place. “One of my strengths is my good interpersonal relations with clients,” explains Donavon. “I enjoy every part of being a stylist, whether it’s cutting, colouring or styling,” he adds. “I moved to Ballito because of the opportunities and quality of life the town has to offer. Also, to be able to work with a brand like Gerald Wells where I can express myself as a stylist, be up to date with the latest trends and provide excellent service to clients,” is just another good reason Donavon has chosen Gerald Wells Ballito. “I am very particular on detail,” says Donavon, and his honesty is a major part of what his clients expect from him, ensuring his clients always leave his chair with a spring in their step. “My clients can expect only the best treatment from me!” Donavon adds that another plus to his job is the good laughs he shares with his loyal clients.

Book your consultation with Donovan at Gerald Wells Ballito on 032 586 0554, or alternatively SMS or Whatsapp him directly on 082 098 3307. Cheers! T

Rolls-Royce unveils its R805, 000 champagne chest for its luxurious cars, complete with a caviar dispenser.

HERE might be strict laws against drinking and driving but the latest option available to Rolls-Royce customers suggests you end a journey with a tipple and a very fine delicacy.

That’s because the n-car feature unveiled by the iconic British brand is a champagne chest that can also serve up a choice of caviar and canapés. It says the glorified drinks cabinet displays the ‘true luxury and epicurean pleasure’ of the brand. Very la-di-da. As is the price - a whopping R805 243.12 including VAT. Of course, you probably shouldn’t be enjoying the delights of the champagne chest in your vehicle (especially if it cost close to R18 million). Instead, the removable unit, which is hand-crafted by the bespoke design team at Goodwood HQ, is the ideal accessory for the typical rendezvous we imagine Rolls-Royce owners have on a day-to-day basis - such as a catchup with old friends on a superyacht or having a chinwag on the terrace of a private residence. It’s a special piece of kit - as you might imagine considering that it costs the same as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class luxury saloon. The chassis of the chest is made from machined aluminium, carbon fibre and trimmed in natural grain black leather. The hide panels are embossed with the Spirit of Ecstasy logo and flanked by Tudor Oak wood - the same materials you’d find gracing the dashboards of the Cullinan SUV, Ghost and Phantom limos. Press the secret release button and the trove reveals a ‘perfectly appointed’ champagne set for four guests. The lid of the chest then rises on K W A D U K U Z A

a pair of finely-chiselled arms and converts into a serving tray with a surface finished in Tudor Oak wood and a laser-cut stainless steel inlay. The contents also include four cotton napkins with embroidered RollsRoyce logos. Once the chest is opened there’s a light inside to guide you to one of the quad of hand-blown crystal champagne flutes, which the marque says are ‘arranged to evoke memories of a V12 engine’. But the pièce de résistance is the ejectable side panels containing thermal coolers made from aluminium and carbon fibre. What are they for, you ask? RollsRoyce says you can use them to carry a chilled bottle of champers, but they can also serve caviar and canapes, all at optimum temperature. And you don’t just shovel the fish eggs straight into the dispensers. There’s something Rolls-Royce has coined a ‘caviar configuration’, which is describes as ‘two thermal caviar caissons, each accommodating a 30 gram tin’ that are ‘complemented by two blini caissons’. We’re just as lost as you are. This flamboyant chest also comes with two spoons. Sorry, we mean Mother-of-Pearl spoons with anodised aluminium handles that are housed magnetically at the top of the case. These are designed in this was ‘as not to impair the delicate flavour of the caviar’, don’t you know? Gavin Hartley, head of Bespoke Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: ‘The approach is that of designing a Rolls-Royce motor car; the finest materials are married with pinnacle engineering to provide an experience like no other.

‘The Champagne Chest is crafted for those that seek a heightened sense of occasion in an elegant, entertaining manner and offers the irresistible allure of gadgetry.’

Want one? We know you do. It can only be acquired through Rolls-Royce dealerships, with prices starting from R677, 000 excluding local taxes.
