AMILY structures are complicated; I suppose because love is so complicated! Gone are the days when dads were the sole breadwinners, leaving early in the morning and coming home late at night, when children had to be seen and not heard. Gone, too, are the days when a hetero-normative, nuclear family is the only ‘acceptable’ kind of family. The stereotype persists, but the reality is that fathers, or father figures, much like families, come in all shapes and sizes.
These days, dads are changing nappies, pushing prams, doing school runs, and holding little hands during doctor’s visits. Men are having to re-define their roles in 2019, which is, in my humble opinion, a good thing. I’ve recently met some new friends through my children’s school. The parents own their own business, with offices in Cape Town and Jo’burg. The dad has shifted his priorities so that his commute always coincides with dropping off the children at school. roles. ‘Hard work’ no longer equates to a conventional nine-to-five job. Research has shown that working environments that take emotional intelligence into account, and consider employees’ lives outside of the workplace more, make for happier and more productive workers. The rise of technology has also opened up career doors for entrepreneurs who are bound simply by their own potential. We’re working much smarter, not harder, juggling multiple projects and endeavours. Flexitime is our newfound friend! This generation of parents is far more present and involved in their children’s lives. Does this pose its own problems in its extreme form? Absolutely. But before you all shout ‘helicopter parent’ at me, that’s not the case at all; as with everything, balance is key. Whether you’re a dad, or a father figure to someone, a step-dad, stand-in-dad, or stay-athome dad, you’re contributing an important role to society, and this edition of Life & Style is a celebration of you, and the role you play in raising our children. We’ve got your health and wellbeing covered on pages seven and eight, with our wellness experts’ take on male menopause, and eating for longevity. We chat to father and business leader Thobani Msimang on page three, and we pinned down our essential gifting guide for Father’s Day on page 10. Our travel feature offers some expert advice on where to head if you’re keen to explore fly fishing, and if you do celebrate Father’s Day, we suggest heading to Ballito’s very own Portuguese deli and bakery Concha Café, for a delicious breakfast or Portuguesestyle brunch with your pops! THOBANI MSIMANG - MAKING A DIFFERENCE
THE VOICE of Ballito
Dave Charles sat down with father and business leader, CEO of Eureka Capital Pty Ltd and member of the board of the Zimbali Estate Management Association, Thobani Msimang.
H
E’S come a long way from his roots of the rural village near Dududu on the South Coast. His grandfather was a political activist and natural entrepreneur who had to constantly invent ways of trading below the radar of the massively restrictive Apartheid administration to make ends meet.
Thobani’s late mother, Nancy Msimang, who had very little formal education, was a driving force in the family and hugely instrumental in ensuring that her children went to school. It was a 25-km slog on foot to school and back for little Thobani and with no electricity or running water at home, life was never easy in the village. At a tender age, he began to take an active interest in the politics of the African National Congress – a dangerous pastime in a region deeply riven by political strife. By standard nine, when he was sent to join his older brother living with an uncle in Umzinto to further his education at Sizophumelela High School, his political activism had intensified. These were violent and dangerous times and many young activists paid the ultimate price for their commitment. Thobani’s older brother was gunned down in the room where he himself lay hiding from the security police during a crackdown. These were terrible times but through it all, Thobani matriculated with exemption - the first from his village to do so - and he wanted desperately to further his studies at university.
But there was no money for that, and so he took a year - a gap year before it became fashionable – to work as a waiter at the Blue Waters Hotel in Durban to finance his first year at the University of KwaZulu Natal. During the Apartheid era, UKZN
department to help fund his university fees. It was at UKZN that he met Zipho, a commerce student who would later become his wife and business partner. Thobani graduated with an Honours degree in Education and Master’s Degrees in Development Studies and International Trade and Banking. He was quickly recruited by Telesure, a major insurance company where he was instrumental in developing a host of innovative solutions and products still in vogue today. A stint in the banking world followed where he had the opportunity to engage with the international business community through a three month Canadian sabbatical and from there he moved into the private sector where he has built a solid reputation and a dynamic business portfolio that continues to grow and flourish. Thobani attributes his success largely to the relationship he has with his wife, Zipho who he describes as a meticulous organiser and the love of his life. He is the dreamer and she is the strategist and together they make a dynamic couple both in business and socially. They live in Zimbali with their teenage daughters and young son and are deeply committed Christians. Their faith shines through in every aspect of their lives. Thobani recently became the first black man to serve on the board at Zema and he remains committed to the ideal of building a better future through service to the community – “you are who you are because of others…” They believe in people and are invested in the future of our country by continuing to make a difference in every way that counts. TOP-NOTCH TECH FOR DAD
No one could be better qualified to give us the best gadget gift ideas for dads than tech blogger and dad, Marc Forrest.
I
LOVE Father’s Day. Even though in my house I’m lucky to have every day feel like Father’s Day, that one special day in June makes it all count. Being a gadget guy, I’m pretty sure that these are the perfect gifts for any dad!

Dave Charles let’s the vertiable dogs out, and finds a few gems along the way.
DJI OSMO ACTION CAM
The latest addition from the team at DJI is the perfect Father’s Day gift for the outdoor adventure dad, or even just the weekend warrior dad who needs some footage to show off his skills on the mountain bike trails. Coming up against the popular Go-Pro brand, the DJI Osmo Action Cam is in a league of its own when it comes to stabilization. After all, the DJI team have perfected gimbals and stabilizations in their more commonly known drones. The Osmo Action offers 4k HDR video recording, Dual Touch Screens (perfect for selfies while surfing) and is also fully waterproof up to 11m underwater. If your dad is the adrenaline junkie (we all dream of being) and likes to show of his skills to the world on video, then the DJI Osmo Action is a must. Price: R6999, available from myistore.co.za
O CREATISTA PLUS NESPRESSO COFFEE MACHINE
Let’s be honest; coffee fixes everything. Dads around the world know this, and I can vouch for this theory! The Nespresso Creatista Plus coffee machine is like having a Barista in your own home. With a built-in frothing steam pipe, and auto temperature control, this is a musthave. The machine offers eight different beverage selections so whipping up a Flat White better than some of the coffee chains happens with merely the touch of a button. The best thing about this coffee machine is the fact that it heats up in three seconds, so there is no waiting around for the perfect cuppa to be made. Price: R5999, available from yuppiechef.co.za
GARMIN INSTINCT SMARTWATCH
Smartwatches seem to have become the ubiquitous, must-have accessory. With health and fitness becoming more and more of a priority as dad gets older, this gift is a subtle nudge for the father figure in your life to take better care of himself. The Garmin Instinct is a great “starter” fitness watch for anyone who is looking to get into the game. It offers a battery lifetime of up to 14 days, and also offers full GPS functionality for tracking your rides and runs. You can also monitor your heart rate, activity and stress using the built-in app on your phone. The watch is built to US Military standards 810G which means it can withstand thermal and shock

N Saturday morning we took our German Shepherd puppy to Townsend Park. There’s an excellent dog school that trains there on Saturday mornings and we are hopeful that young Otis will take to it better than his predecessor, who was expelled for conduct unbecoming. Well, to be fair, she wasn’t actually expelled, but she was far keener on trying to eliminate the competition that learning the ropes, so we decided that, discretion being the better part of valour, we would excuse her from further participation.
It was while we were back there this week that I noticed a well-dressed elderly gentleman in a wide-brimmed hat, picking up the litter and plastic bags in the park. He wasn’t making a show of it, just calmly collecting the litter and cleaning up the park. I wanted to thank him for what he was doing but Otis was being particularly vocal at that point…I think it was the hat…he doesn’t like hats! I saw the same man on Sunday, quietly cleaning up the litter just off Ballito Drive. He is one of the angels among us who take it upon themselves to make a difference by doing what they can to make the world a better place. Of course there are those who dismiss this sort of thing as of little consequence in the scheme of things. The world is in a mess and the problem is so massive that the actions of one man like this make no difference whatsoever, they say. But they are wrong. Anyone who takes it upon themselves to do something positive for the planet, no matter how inconsequential it may seem, is connecting with the universe in an extraordinary way. “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and
resistance.” -Robert F. Kennedy We all have the potential to make a difference - to send forth that ripple of hope to create the tidal wave of positive energy that we need to clean up our country on every level. And it begins with you and me. Let’s do it! One way of making a positive contribution is to spread the word when you discover something excellent. Here’s my recommendation, if you enjoy good food as much as I do. One of my favourite restaurants in Ballito at the moment is Vicolo at the Zimbali Wedge shopping centre. It’s part of the Old Town Italy family and the attention to detail here is extraordinary, but don’t be intimidated by the address – it’s absolutely affordable and totally
welcoming and accessible. Everything on the menu is next level and the house wine is surprisingly good. There’s a wine and ciccheti special
on right now that you should explore. They also have an awesome Italian deli range of produce to-go, and they serve excellent coffee. If you haven’t tried it yet, do yourself a favour - you’ll love it!

FOODS FOR GENTS’ LONGEVITY The adage goes that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but it may also influence his lifespan. It’s a fact that women live longer than men, but according to Life & Style in-house nutrition expert Kim Martin, opting for these 6 foods can positively impact how long men live for.
W
OMEN do tend to outlive men, and studies have attributed this to changes in the way our cells handle the ageing process, namely telomere shortening.
Without going into the complex process, essentially each time our cells divide our telomeres are susceptible to shortening. Shorter telomeres over time leads to accelerated aging (amongst other health conditions). There are a few factors that influence telomere shortening including stress, sedentary lifestyles, and a poor diet. Stress management and regular exercise are also of the utmost importance, however there are also food choices a man can make to support his long-term health. 1. SALMON Fatty fish, of which salmon is the king, is rich in two nutrients that enhance longevity. The first is Omega 3. As the primary anti-inflammatory agent in our diets Omega 3 is important for heart health, joint health, memory and cognitive functioning, as well as the integrity of every cell membrane in the body. It is considered an important nutrient in the prevention of prostate cancer. The second nutrient is vitamin D. Primarily, we obtain active vitamin D from the sun, but often our lifestyles (long working hours) and a healthy fear of skin cancer keep us from spending sufficient time in the sunlight. Aim to eat a serving of fatty fish (salmon, herring, sardines, or mackerel) two to three times per week. There are also plant-based sources of Omega 3 and vitamin D such as flax or chia seeds and mushrooms respectively.
2. SPINACH Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach are superfoods. Spinach is low in calories, relatively cheap, and rich in a number of important nutrients. There are two minerals that make spinach a great food to eat regularly: iron and magnesium. Iron is important for oxygenation of the blood, and as such for boosting energy levels and exercise performance, among other things. Spinach is one of the best dietary sources of magnesium, which is necessary for a healthy metabolism, regular heart rhythm, maintaining muscle and nerve function, blood pressure, and even the immune system. Magnesium is also considered preventative for prostate cancer. Aim to eat a cup of dark green leafy veg daily. 3. RED PEPPER Forget oranges, red peppers are one of the most concentrated dietary sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C serves as a master
antioxidant and is important for cancer prevention as well as a healthy immune system. For men’s health, studies have suggested that vitamin C may help improve fertility in men by increasing both motility and total sperm count. Include a variety of vitamin C sources on a regular basis. Aside from red peppers, good sources include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, potatoes, spinach, and tomatoes. 4. PUMPKIN SEEDS Pumpkin seeds are one of the great dietary sources of the mineral Zinc. Zinc is a key mineral used by the body in metabolizing nutrients, immune functioning, DNA and protein production, and cell division. Zinc is also especially important for men as it enables the body to produce testosterone, so regular intake of this mineral is vital for male fertility and sexual health. We can obtain zinc from other dietary sources such as chicken, beef, lamb and other protein sources. However, with a lot of us cutting down on our animal protein intake it is prudent to consider adding a sprinkling of seeds to our meals. This will become especially important for men struggling with low testosterone levels. 5. BEETROOT Enhanced blood flow, decreased blood pressure, and improved physical and sexual performance are just a few of the health benefits of the humble beetroot. Beetroot is rich in a variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are cancer preventative and liver supportive. Beetroot is a rich source of nitrates, which are important for dilation of the blood vessels. They help to normalize blood pressure, as well as enhancing blood flow to all parts of the body. Variety in the diet is important, so the suggestion here isn’t to eat beetroot every single day. Include a cup of beetroot as part of your regular rotation of fruits and vegetables. 6. OATS A lot of men don’t get enough fibre. Oats is a great dietary source of fibre. Fibre helps the digestive system to “detox”, eliminates waste from the body, and keeps bowels functioning. There are many health conditions that can result from inadequate fibre, especially over long periods of time. Prevention is the key here, and the recommended intake is 30 grams of fibre daily. Foods rich in fibre include oats, wholegrains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, and nuts and seeds. Good health begins with a healthy diet. At Lifestyle Health we advise getting your diet right first, and then pursuing adequate supplementation where necessary.

WELLBEING
Managing MALE MENOPAUSE Yes, there is such a thing! Male menopause, or andropause in colloquial terms, has only been recognised in the past few years and, although a lot of research has been done around it in that time. Dr Rosie Carey unpacks this often overlooked men’s health topic.
T
HE general public is often unaware of the symptoms and management of male menopause. It may well be worth your while reading this article if you (or a loved one) is a male over 45.
Male menopause is more correctly known as androgen decline in the aging male (ADAM) or late onset hypogonadism (LOH). Both of these terms describe fairly accurately what happens in male menopause. In female menopause, the production of female hormones declines rapidly, making the symptoms obvious and very easily identifiable. In andropause, male hormone levels drop more gradually which makes the symptom onset more insidious and the condition less easy to identify. Over the age of 40, testosterone levels in men drop on average by around one percent per year. Over the first 10 years, this makes a barely noticeable difference, but by the time that you are 60, your testosterone may have dropped by 20 percent and you will be experiencing the effects of lowered testosterone levels. It’s important to note that not all men experience this drop in testosterone. Blood tests are necessary to accurately
monitor testosterone levels. The symptoms of andropause are often simply put down to old age, and the opportunity to treat them is missed. The most common symptoms include: - Increased fat deposition around your abdomen - Decreased muscle bulk and/or strength - Decreased libido - Fewer spontaneous erections - Memory loss - Sleep disturbances - Fatigue - Depression
management of andropause
The first step in management is to get an accurate diagnosis. Many people attribute erectile dysfunction to male menopause when in fact it is the result of cardiovascular disease or diabetes, a side effect of medication or a combination of both. You will need to make an appointment to get blood tests
“Over the age of 40, testosterone levels in men drop on average by around one percent per year.”
done and to get an accurate diagnosis before you can take steps to manage male menopause. If you are diagnosed with andropause, you may require testosterone replacement therapy. This is similar to hormone replacement therapy in women and is surrounded by as much controversy. Testosterone replacement therapy has been associated with increased risk of prostate cancer and possibly heart disease, so it is imperative that a correct diagnosis is made before starting therapy and that a doctor manages your testosterone replacement. Testosterone replacement therapy does usually reverse most of the symptoms of male menopause, but the decision to go onto treatment needs to be made in an informed manner together with your general practitioner or urologist. Like with most things medical, healthy lifestyle does help to contain the symptoms of andropause. This would include a healthy diet and regular exercise. Depression, if it is severe enough, may need to be assessed and treated by your doctor. There are various herbal supplements that claim to treat andropause, but I would be wary of anything that doesn’t have sufficient scientific backing behind its claims.

MOOIMAAK MAKEOVERS EMMERENTIA DE ROCHE
The transformation
S
ince her early teens, Emmerentia de Roche had always been self-conscious about her teeth. Her family never had the financial means to improve them so she resigned herself to opening her mouth as little as possible. Or at least until she became a participant in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show.
The dental wizard that is Dr. JJ Serfontein gave Emmerentia a lifechanging smile makeover while the Skin Renewal team led by Dr. Graham Duncombe and therapist Liza Schoeman used a series of treatments to turn back the hands of time.

NEEDFUL THINGS
Another way the Skin Renewal team helped increase Emmerentia’s collagen supply was via Dermapen treatments. These involve running an electric needle across the skin to create micro ‘wounds’ that inspire a ‘repair’ process that’s essentially collagen synthesis. Later, she would marvel at how it improved her skin’s texture and also helped lift mild pigmentation.
A LIQUID LIFT
Last but not least, Emmerentia was given a 3D Liquid Facelift. This completely knife-free procedure involves injecting botulinum toxin to relax the look of wrinkles and dermal filler to plump areas that have lost volume. The latter helped subtly augment her lips, a good thing as she had beautiful new teeth to show off. “I’m now super happy to smile 24-7!”, she said. “I feel like a new person!”

Collagen is the key to youthful-looking skin. Our bodies produce a lot of it when we’re young, but this dramatically declines with age. This is why it’s important to invest in therapies that encourage our skin to make more of it. Laser Genesis is one such thing and was used to help firm Emmerentia’s face.

Have you given any thought to what will happen to your Ceme ashes after cremation?
KEEPING MEMORIES ALIVE
Introducing the...

As planet Earth’s population keeps growing, the need for respectful, efficient and sustainable burial solutions grows as well.

Life beyond life...
Designed to convert your loved ones, or your pets into a tree after life...
C
N South Africa, cultural practices and beliefs related to human burials have brought cemeteries to near capacity with no obvious expansion plan. Burials can also incur massive costs, and although cremation is outlawed by certain religions, increasingly people are turning to cremation of a loved one as a practical solution.
However, the issue of where to either bury or scatter the ashes is often a major concern. Cemetrees.com is a recently established South African company based in Ballito. We are the exclusive South African distributors for a product called the Bios Urn, imported from Spain. The Bios Urn is the world’s first patented, fully biodegradable funeral urn, designed to convert a loved one’s ashes into a tree. The Bios Urn provides an inexpensive, green and eco-friendly option for dealing with cremated remains. Whether it is for oneself, a loved one or a beloved family pet, this funeral urn offers the chance to give back to the earth by planting more trees and replacing a living soul that has
departed. On a personal level, instead of conceiving death as an absolute end, a person can live knowing that when they die they can transform into another way of existing, in the form of a tree. People can choose which type of tree they want to be and make decisions ahead of time to ensure their wishes are respected. For the family and friends of the departed, it can be a comforting experience. The funeral urn comes in two parts – the bottom capsule is designed to hold the ashes and the top capsule comes with a soil expansion disc, plant nutrients, and a choice of seeds. Soil from the site where the urn is to be planted is mixed into the top capsule and either a seed or a seedling can be planted. One can choose any indigenous plant, even one that can be placed in an indoor pot plant holder for replanting at a future date. Find out more by visiting www.cemetrees.com where you can purchase the product from the online store. You can also download a brochure or visit @cemetrees on Facebook. Y

Just under three years ago, popular day-time eatery Concha Café opened its doors. More recently, an expansion saw the bustling beachfront spot increase it’s offering to Mediterranean deli retail goods, and an increased capacity bakery churning out decadent pastries and piping-hot breads.
W
ITHIN the first five minutes of sitting down with Diogo Barendse, one recognises the sheer volume of customers stopping for a handshake or a hug as testament to his hands-on approach at his popular beachfront eatery, Concha Café.
“Ballito is largely about three things,” comments Diogo; “family, fitness, and fun, and we want to cater to all of those things,” and cater, they do. Concha has always been about community; surfers and joggers alike happily leave their keys in Concha’s trusty hands while they head off on their morning fix. On their return, Diogo has ensured a private hot shower around the corner from the café is readily available to freshen up before heading back to work, cappuccino and freshly baked pastéis de nata in-hand. Even your pooch is catered for, with special menu items
and fresh water bowls dotted around. The family are well known in Ballito circles, having holidayed here for many years before finally deciding to pack up their Jo’burg lives and go coastal for good. Diogo’s sister Sara married into the Durocher-Yvon family: Patrice, wife Cynthia and their son Fabien, owners and founders of Coco de Mer Boutique Hotel, housing the exceptional Fiamma Grill. Diogo even helped build the entire pool deck of Fiamma, and it wouldn’t be the first time he was happy to get his hands dirty to improve the family businesses! Driving frequently between the business and the family’s residence down the road in the Ballito village meant that they passed the preexisting corner diner daily, and when opportunity arose, they didn’t hesitate to take over the property, but it required an extensive, hands-on, overhaul. “We’d already done the hard yards at Fiamma,” explains Diogo, suggesting they’d already established a loyal customer base, and learnt the ins and outs of business in Ballito, “so opening Concha felt like a natural progression.” They did a soft opening in October 2016, and from the start captured the beachfront breakfast and lunch trade with their Portuguese-inspired fair and freshly baked goods. It’s evident that Diogo cares very deeply about restoring the Ballito village to its former glory, and he is heartened by the influx of new businesses to the area, along with other newer owners who recognise the importance of genuine customer care,
and delicious, quality food. “We also have The Big Blue!” he gestures, waving his hand toward the spectacular coastline in front of Concha. In addition, Concha has created a European, al frescostyle dining experience on the surrounding sidewalk, but it wasn’t without its constraints – it’s hard to believe Diogo and his team push out so many meals and baked goods from such a tiny kitchen. “It’s 22 of the most awkward square metres you could have worked in!” he laughs, and a few short months ago, Concha Café realised their dream of expanding into the space next door (what used to be The Beach Hut, and then Kelly’s.) “We did everything ourselves,” he explains, “working 18-hours a day, from the plumbing to the electrical boards.” Did we mention these guys are not afraid of hard work? With their increased storage facilities, larger bakery, and now a foodie retail haven of imported European produce, Concha have also started catering from their new space, offering both sweet and savoury platters. Stuck for a dinner idea on your way home from work? Pop by and grab a fresh sourdough loaf, and an array of Mediterranean delicacies to accompany your rustic

meal. He credits his aunt, Xandra, for the Portuguese influence the food adopts, and her repertoire is an echo of his family’s heritage; as they say, the proof is in the pastéis de natas!

A BIT ABOUT BARRY
“I was born in Johannesburg. My late father was my mentor and friend, as well as being a great photographer. We spent many a night in his darkroom, bonding and producing magic, and that is what photography is to me; pure, beautiful, wonderful, magic. I was given my mother’s used Kodak Brownie at age seven and my first brand new Canonnet Junior, for my sixteenth birthday. I shot my first wedding at age 21 and the bridal couple could only afford a spool of 24, so my gift to them was a 36-exposure film. I was nervous then, and some four hundred weddings later I still battle to sleep the night before a wedding. From those humble beginnings we have grown to three photographers and five
editors. My wife Denise handles all the paperwork. We shoot every genre of photography, but weddings are still my favourite, I'm very much a people person and insist on an engagement shoot before each wedding, so that come the big day the bridal couple become our friends. If dipping your toes in the trout waters of the KZN Midlands sounds appealing to you, Andrew Fowler, chairman of the Natal Fly Fishers Club, offers his expertise on where to head, and what you’ll need if you’re a novice.
I
N the eyes of the trout fisherman, KZN is blessed with a geographical feature of relevance to those in search of cold, clear waters. That feature is an area of high ground, which extends from the eastern-most tip of Lesotho, to the top of the iconic Inhlosane mountain, and encompasses rolling hills and farmland from Mooi River to Kamberg, to Boston to Lotheni, and the Dargle.
For reasons unknown, all the trout rivers in this area are distinguished brown trout streams. With Browns being a relative rarity in South Africa, it makes the area a unique one for the discerning fly-fisher in search of this prized quarry. Added to that the preponderance of farm dams stocked with hard fighting rainbow trout, and you have yourself a veritable mecca for proponents of the long rod. Visiting fly fishers should seek out rivers such as the Bushman’s near Giants Castle, the Mooi, flowing through the Kamberg, and the Umgeni in the Dargle. On the fringes of this area are the Lotheni in the south, and the Injasuthi

to the North. (The Injasuthi is the only one of those listed here that contains rainbow trout.) There are of course others like the Elands, the Yarrow, the Little Mooi, the Inzinga, and countless small tributaries that are explored by the die-hards who hold their secret fishing spots close to their chests. For those visiting the Midlands in search of trout fishing, accessing good waters requires a little homework, and some trial and error type exploration, for much of this water is on private land, and even that which is available to the public requires some digging to uncover. As a starting point, be sure to look up Wildfly in Nottingham Road, who sell day tickets and membership from their fly shop in the village. One can also browse the Midlands Meander brochure or website for accommodation venues, several of which boast decent fly fishing waters. Those with a longer-term interest, who plan to make regular visits from the coast, would do well to consider membership of the Natal Fly Fishers
Club (NFFC), which has access to some 17 river beats and 30 dams. While this club does not sell day tickets, it does aid and support several ventures that do, by either managing their waters, and/or listing details on a community “day tickets” tab on the club website. Examples are the NFFC’s own Bushman’s River Community fly-fishing project, and the KZNFFA’s Thendela waters on the Mooi. Several other waters are managed by the NFFC for its member’s benefit, but as a spin-off, also for the benefit of visiting anglers accommodated at various farm cottages. These farm stays offer access to fly-fishing that would otherwise be the preserve of only privileged club members. Amongst the best are Riverside Cottages on the Mooi at Kamberg, and a little further downstream, Maxwell farm cottages, both of which offer top-notch dam fishing, together with river water. Copperleigh Cottage in the Dargle similarly overlooks a pristine rainbow trout lake.
WHERE TO GET YOUR GEAR
Getting kitted out for your fly-fishing venture is not difficult: KZN has several good shops, from Kingfisher’s branches in Durban, Kloof and ‘Maritzburg, to Wildfly in Nottingham Road, and Xplorer’s new concept fly-fishing shop in Briardene. Those shops are all manned by enthusiastic fly-fishers who offer good advice, but expect to be shown a 3 weight 8ft rod for the rivers and a 5 weight 9ft rod for the dams. If you are starting out, a 4 weight will comfortably cover both rivers and dams. The trend is for floating lines nowadays. Select and spend on your line first and foremost, matched to a rod that suits it, and with those key elements taken care of, then consider the reel and other paraphernalia which is all secondary, but a great deal of fun. Flies are readily available, but fly shops will encourage you to immerse your time between fishing trips, in the art of fly-tying, which is a consuming pastime all of its own.
