The back story
I
T’S easy to assume that everyone thinks the way you do or knows what you know. But it can be a damaging assumption, both for personal relationships, and for business.
I’ll admit I’ve been guilty of this over the years, continuing on my merry, oblivious way in a conversation and assuming those around me have the back story. I’ve had to learn how to ‘get out of my own head’ and check my manners over the years, adopting a more considered approach to communicating with people. This train of thought also led me to my place of work. A friend of mine (and one of my ex editors) is a prominent editorial director at Media 24’s magazine division. She has a global perspective on media brands, and I respect her immensely. (#GirlBoss!) During a recent visit to Ballito, she commented on Life & Style Media as being a really cool, boutique media house with a unique offering to not only the local audience, but to advertisers. In fact, her words were, “It’s so hip! The trusty Biz Book is now in its 28th edition, over nearly a decade, with three updated editions published per year. Five years ago, they saw a window for a commercial/community radio station, with a heavy focus on great music, and good vibes. They secured the only local radio licence, and began 88FM Radio Life & Style, the voice of Ballito, with a global streaming audience from the United States to Joburg. (I love that technology can show us who’s listening, and from where.) These were, and still are, media products that offer a positive, upbeat message, and the combination of all three (soon to be more) is a powerful vehicle for local advertisers. The company has continued to evolve and grow, and is about to go full multimedia, with the launch of audio-visual products that will change the way North Coast residents both consume their local media, and advertise their services and products. I’ve had an 18-year career in national media, and I tend to agree with my friend; this is a cool brand, and it’s about to get even cooler. It’s well documented that the world is consuming more media than ever before, and it’s up to the cleverest, sassiest media products to evolve with both their audience and their advertiser. ITH the Ballito Pro in full swing, it once again brings our attention to Surfers Not Street Children, one of the official charities affiliated to the annual surfing competition.
Its name invokes the question of identity, and the labels we give to people who then struggle to shake it. Giving children an alternative identity, other than the one dictated to by poverty and homelessness, is something to be proud of. Our cover photograph this month celebrates their story, with an image of their ‘Girls Surf Too’ initiative. Their mentorship and skills development programmes steer children through hopelessness and homelessness to becoming active, engaged, employable adults, using the medium of surfing. Started by Tom Hewitt MBE, who was awarded the accolade by Queen Elizabeth II, the charity has also enjoyed support from HRH Prince Harry and South African pro surfer Jordy Smith. I
T was while driving her car one day that Jacqui Rey first thought of the name Food Matters for her catering and consulting business. That was 35 years ago.
It’s a multi-faceted concept for a multi-faceted business model; with catering clients from Porsche to the Vodacom Durban July, menu design and consulting to local restaurants, and a supply division offering biscotti’s, cheesecakes and more to establishments as far as Hillcrest. Many years after the inception of Food Matters, Jacqui’s sister-in-law Isabelle had a similar ‘Aha’ moment when she came up with the name for their convenience food range, FOMO. The social media acronym for ‘Fear of Missing Out’ also referenced ‘Frozen Meals’, and ‘Food Matters’. Jacqui was sold. So much so, that she teased Isabelle about applying for a job with Bill Gates to further her clever ideas! “It all started with a chicken and leek pie,” explains Isabelle, (affectionately known as Izzy by the family.) “And it just went viral,” she adds, referring to the extreme popularity of the humble but delicious dish that was the launch pad for FOMO. Izzy wasn’t always in the food game; having enjoyed a career in décor, as well as front-of-house hospitality which included time at Quarters Hotel in Durban’s Florida Road, where she and Jacqui once worked together. Izzy and brother Jean-Francois, Jacqui’s husband, are of Mauritian heritage. They have fond memories of growing up in the kitchen of their family home on a sugarcane farm in Ottawa, near Verulam. Izzy recounts being seated next to their warm Aga stove, wooden
spoon in hand, with their family cook of 60 years, as well as their mother. It was here that the children cultivated a lifelong love of good food. Jacqui also grew up on a sugar estate, in Mount Edgecombe, where she vividly remembers starting to cook at the tender age of nine. She started training in earnest at the age of 18, then cutting her teeth (and sharpening her knives) at Durban’s Royal Hotel in the early 1980s. She then headed to London and spent time in Cirencester in the Cotswolds honing her skills, before heading home to join the Christina Martin Culinary Arts Studio as a lecturer. It was around this time that she and Jean-Francois first met, and began ‘Decadent Desserts’, supplying delicious sweet treats to friends and restaurants. Ingredients are a major part of the ‘secret recipe’ for their success, underscoring everything Jacqui’s food stands for. She will choose exceptional ingredients over cheaper alternatives any day, adding “we are quality-driven, not price driven.” And the proof is in the pudding. Their operating kitchen in Ballito is an impressive 240 square metres, complete with 18 staff, walk-in freezers, refrigerated trailers, and heaps of hard work. Having a family business doesn’t always necessarily translate into success, but Food Matters is the shining example of how it can work, with everyone adopting different roles and finding a good balance. Izzy is now almost full-time on the FOMO range, refining recipes and lovingly preparing convenience meals for home-freezing. Highlights include chicken lasagne, country-style oxtail (perfect

Our personal favourite is ordering fresh, local flowers from the site, as well as the Science of Coffee beans.

Hupu is not an original concept, but it is relatively new to Ballito. Two years ago, corporate executive Michelle McNamara, was forced to change her lifestyle to improve her health. “I fell quite ill,” she explains. Originally based in La Lucia, Michelle realised she needed to start eating more healthily and living her life a little more stress free. “I worked in corporate for over 15 years in a high-powered managerial position, and after having my baby girl I decided to give it a break and spend some time with her.” Given Michelle’s health concerns, and the new member of the family, her husband started to order from online delivery service, Hupu, in Westville, and they were soon hooked. “The meat was all free range and tasted amazing, and the vegetables were
organically grown. I rarely went to the shops and it started to save a ton of money and time.” In addition, she found that by eating the right organically grown food her skin started to clear, and her gut started to heal. The mom of two saw an opportunity, and the family decided to move to Salt Rock and start a new business venture with Hupu’s innovative concept, offering fresh, local produce to Ballito

No doubt Michelle’s customerfocused professional background is the foundation of her business, and she’s roped in the family too. (Her son is the Hupu delivery guy!) “We have formed relationships with many local farmers and producers, and have put them on our app,” says Michelle. “We now aim to connect the farmer with the end user so that they’re getting produce from the ground, straight to the consumer.” What really makes Hupu unique, is that it aims to not only support local communities, but they provide produce that is free range, hormone free and antibiotic free. IMBITHI ECO-ESTATE’S Environmental and Landscaping Department scooped Double Gold at the South African Landscaping Institute (SALI) Awards held in Cape Town, recently. In addition to the Double Gold Award for Environmental Landscaping, Simbithi was also awarded Best Environmental Work Entry in South Africa.
This was a joint effort between their Environmental and Landscaping Department, and the dedicated team from Servest Landscaping who ensure this eco-environment is optimally maintained. Servest branch manager for
Landscaping and Turf, Rudi Jonck, shared that this year’s judging criteria and scoring was stricter than at previous SALI Awards. “The Servest team would like to thank the management of Simbithi for their support, in achieving this result and site manager, Siphelele Simelane and his staff for their hard work and dedication.” Simbithi Eco-Estate general manager, Malcolm Samuel, commented that “even now, in winter, the estate is looking beautiful.” A special congratulations to Gary McKenzie, Michael Riley, and their dedicated environmental committee for their efforts.

School holidays can often mean your kids (and you) are making less healthy food choices for convenience sake. Dietitian Kim Wilson offers some simple food swaps to consider.
L
et’s be clear, kids will be kids. It’s unrealistic to expect them to say no to sugar or refined foods when they are everywhere. There are always going to be school functions and birthday parties, and the inevitable takehome party pack. Also, the convenience of pre-packaged ‘kid-friendly’ foods is unmistakable. However, there are some key food swaps that you can make in your home to ensure that your kids get the healthy version.
are widely advertised. You may even be buying the oven-bake option versus the deep-fried version as the healthier choice. However, if you think you’re buying a simple, healthy potato product, you may be shocked at what’s actually added to the ingredients listing. Just some of the nasties added include refined oils, refined syrups, flavourants and preservatives. Take those extra five minutes and prepare your own baked potato or sweet potato chips at home (include the kids in the cooking process) and your body will thank you. It is worth the extra time. For some sneaky swaps you can also make your own veggie fries out of carrot, zucchini, purple sweet potato, or butternut cut into chip shapes. They will not only add extra vegetables to the plate but some bright colors too.
1. CHICKEN NUGGETS We’ve all heard the rumor that there’s only 30 percent chicken in a certain fast-food chain’s chicken nuggets. I cannot confirm this, but I do know that they use refined oils to deep fry the ‘chicken’. Also, if you keep the food on your counter it has been known to remain visibly ‘perfect’ for years. So that can’t be good for you. For a delicious swap take your own chicken pieces, dip them in egg and then coat them in one of the following: cooked quinoa, almond flour, coconut flour, or macadamia flour (or a combination of these) and add your favourite spices such as paprika, cayenne pepper, chicken spice or a Cajun spice. Then lightly fry them in extra virgin olive oil. Serve with a homemade tomato sauce, sriracha, or a sugar-free tomato sauce at least.
4. PIZZA Pizza is always a crowd favourite, but a quick Google search on the calorie contents of typical fast-food pizza options will horrify you. There is truly a myriad of pizza base recipes online made from everything from broccoli to eggplant, and I certainly encourage you to try these out, but you can just as easily use a wholegrain wrap as your base. The best tips for enjoying a healthy pizza at home: • Make it yourself (even the flourversion made at home will at least contain less preservatives and artificial flavors etc.) • Keep the base thin regardless of what it’s made of (and definitely don’t stuff it with sausage!) • Go easy on the cheese. Less is definitely better. • Add extra veggies wherever you can. • Add a side dish of salad or veggies.
2. FISH FINGERS As with chicken nuggets, fish fingers may contain harmful or refined oils as well as preservatives or additives that aren’t very healthy for you or your kids. The easy version is to make your own using the exact same method as above. Serve them with a delicious mashed cauliflower (for extra healthy veggies) or mashed potato or sweet potato (hold off on the added milk/cream/sugar) and again add a dipping sauce if preferred. 3. OVEN-BAKED CHIPS These are a firm favourite in most homes, and the ready-to-cook versions
5. CHIPS/CRISPS This is a no-brainer, and I definitely don’t want to harp on about this, but what ever happened to enjoying good old homemade popcorn? Homemade popcorn makes a crunchy, satisfying snack for any occasion, and it contains a lot of fiber and very little carbohydrates per serving. You can enjoy a whole four cups worth before getting the same carbohydrate content as one small slice of bread. Make your own popcorn using the whole kernels (i.e. not the microwave version), use
olive oil or coconut oil, and then top it off with some freshly ground sea salt or even Herbamare as a low-salt option. Overall, choose homemade: it’s always best because you can see each and every ingredient that goes into the meal. This means no preservatives, artificial flavours, artificial colours, artificial sweeteners or refined oils. Taking the extra time to prepare a healthy meal for your kids at home will mean that when they do eat out,
you can be less concerned about their choices. The 80/20 rule applies to kids just as much as it applies to us.

Many beauty brands make big promises about the results they offer, but is it worth sourcing medical grade skincare versus over-the-counter products? We asked the experts at Skin Renewal Aesthetic Clinic, Umhlanga, to give us the breakdown.
T
HERE is often a question around whether medical skin care products are really any better than products that can be bought over the counter, explains Skin Renewal Aesthetic Clinic; they should know, after so many years in the aesthetic business.
There is a difference between the two; medical skin care products are prescribed and dispensed by doctors, whereas over-the-counter products are available in pharmacies, department stores, salons and anywhere that products are for sale without being prescribed. Over-the-counter products are sometimes sold with advice from a salesperson, but often consumers are left to their own devices, making their selection based on the packaging or claims that are made in the advertising. “Cosmetic” products are just that, and while they do contain beneficial ingredients, their efficacy will not be as noticeable as medical grade. Price is also not necessarily indicative of how good a product is. They might be more widely available at a larger supplier of stockists, but there are many over-the-counter products that are expensive too. There are three very simple

FIRST AID ESSENTIALS School holidays or long weekends away always require a basic first aid kit to travel with. We asked Dr Rosie Carey, general practitioner and mom of two active boys, what to pack for medical emergencies.

T’S always a good idea to take an emergency medical kit with you when you go on holiday, especially if you are visiting places that are remote or unlikely to have access to doctors or pharmacies.
Of course, it’s difficult to travel with an entire pharmacy in your suitcase, so I’ve put together a list of what I think are the essentials for travelling:

I usually recommend taking something like Smecta, Diaclin or Tasectan (these all help bind stool and eliminate toxins) as well as a probiotic. These can all be taken safely by children and adults. 3. NAUSEA MEDICATION: Nothing ruins a holiday more than vomiting so I always recommend taking some anti-nausea medication with you. Ondansetron melts are useful because they melt on your tongue so are absorbed quickly. The other option is to take suppositories because they are usually effective despite vomiting. This is especially useful in the case of young children.

BUTTERFLY Kisses Dave Charles
H
ave you noticed the butterflies? A walk outdoors in places where wildflowers grow is a real treat at the moment if you enjoy watching these fragile little winged jewels. Midwinter is when they appear in numbers, driven by an ancient primeval instinct to go forth and multiply – an instinct that they embrace with hedonistic abandon. It’s the butterfly equivalent to Woodstock, or the Burning Man phenomenon of recent times and, to the casual observer it looks like they’re having a lot of fun.
There’s one walk in particular that we take our dogs on that is an absolute butterfly paradise at present, particularly when the sun is still high enough to illuminate the floral feast on display in the wild verges of the track that we follow. I was curious to find out more
about the little white flowers that are abundant on the greenery at this time of year and attracting masses of white and yellow butterflies so I turned to the technology in my pocket. A quick search of the app store produced a service called Picture This which offered to instantly identify these and other plants for a small fee. The download was fast and relatively effortless – even payment was a breeze. My new friend surprisingly had instant access to my credit card and probably all of my other personal particulars too which it could be sharing with Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin but, as I have nothing to hide, they would be in for a bit of a let-down. But enough of the conspiracy theory. Getting back to the issue at hand, I took a pic of the flowers which the app instantly identified as Jack in the Bush, also known as Siamweed, Crucita, Archangel, Bitterbush, Triffid Weed, Paraffin Bush and Christmas Bush. There was enough of a clue there to alert me to the fact that this might not be indigenous, but it was the Latin name that sent shivers down my spine –
Chromolaena Odorata. This tropical American native is the plant most environmentalists here list as public enemy number one – it’s known to have devastated tourism and livelihoods in countries like Tanzania where it is out of control, reducing water availability, grazing and even crop yields. It spreads like wild fire and, because it is rich in flammable phytochemicals, it burns like wild fire, much hotter and more damaging than natural bush fire. Bottom line – it’s not welcome in these parts and is being eradicated with extreme prejudice. But the butterflies love it and they obviously know that this evil invader has some redeeming features. For example, a quick online check revealed that Chromolaena odorata is recognised throughout the world as a valuable traditional medicinal plant. It is widely used for its wound healing properties. Several parts of this herb have been used to effectively treat wounds, burns, and skin infections, considerably lessening scarring and dramatically speeding up the healing process. Furthermore,
it has also been shown to possess significant anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Its phytochemical components are alkaloids, flavonoids, flavanone, essential oils, phenolics, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. The other important constituents of this plant are Eupolin, chromomoric acid, quercetagetin, and quercetin, all of which contribute to its remedial properties. Published research on the healing properties of Chromoleana odorata is abundant. So, maybe this invasive alien should be re-evaluated with regard to the parlous state of our current economy. With the multi-billion dollar alternative natural medicine movement rapidly gaining global momentum, maybe we should be paying more attention to what the butterflies are telling us. RECENTLY decided I need to ‘fight the flab’ and increase my fitness levels, so after some deliberation, I decided to join Ringside Boxing gym. Ringside integrates old-school boxing with new exercise techniques, which equates to a fresh, fun and exciting training experience.
They have various offerings such as group classes, private sessions and weight training. I started with the early morning group classes that kick off at 5:15am every weekday. I arrived not knowing what to expect and feeling a bit intimidated, seeing that I’ve never done boxing before and I am certainly not as fit as I would like to be. I was greeted by Winston, one of Ringside’s seasoned staff members, who welcomed me and assured me that I had nothing to worry about. He assisted me in wrapping my hands and selecting

My reverie ended abruptly when I was hustled to a boxing bag which indicated it was time to get my box on. The training session started with bag training, doing one-minute combinations of a ‘double jab, right hook and left uppercut’, followed by another minute of running and punching. I even had my moment of glory in the ring, doing a sparring session with
Tyron and his hand pads. After 30 minutes of punching the bag in various combinations and getting my frustrations out, we relocated to the functional training area. The next 30 minutes consisted of fitness drills, which were variations of cardio and weights and, to wrap up the session, a quick sprint around the parking lot. I was exhausted after all that rigorous training and needed a caffeine fix fast, which was lovingly prepared by their in-house Hey’s Café. They also do smoothies if coffee is not your thing. If you are looking for a good workout that will really put you through your paces and challenge your body, I would definitely recommend contacting Ringside Boxing Gym.
