ANY of us love a good Instagram quote. You know the ones; with a dreamy background of a dandelion being blown by the wind, a curly romantic font, a misattributed quote meant to instil one of life’s cardinal lessons. Social media is rife with them, and most simply state the obvious.

British comedian Joe Lycett does a hilarious skit on Inspirational Instagram Quotes, in which he berates mostly vapid celebrities for their clichéd pearls of wisdom, and he replaces popular ones with his own versions, revealing just how silly some of the logic is. I’ve been guilty of sharing the odd quote myself, and hey, sometimes we could all do with a cute quote to make us feel a little better about life! One of my personal favourites include, “An apple a day keeps everyone away if you throw it hard enough.” 20 July: Surf the Shorebreak My passive aggressive This year, The Inqolobane Children’s tendencies aside, most of them have to do with maintaining a home will be the beneficiary of King of the positive attitude, or realising our Shorebreak, an action-packed body-surfing ‘hopes and dreams’. extravaganza with super prizes to be won I’ve always thought that and awesome food on the day. saved my number under Oprah Winfrey’s personal assistant. He is evidence of what can happen in the dogged pursuit of our dreams. He also hasn’t stopped dreaming, and after hearing all about his next project trust me, he’s one to watch. You can read his story, and hear more about his incredible pop-up wax museum of Nelson Mandela, on page 6. Growing up in Tongaat, Sibaya Casino’s new general manager, Myan Moodley, dreamt of wearing a suit to work one day. His father was a truck driver for Hulett’s, and Myan seemed to begin his career where most of us do – at the bottom of the ladder – but today, his snappy suits are the least of his achievements in the hospitality industry. He chats about his new appointment, and how he got there, on page 4. Below is a brief write up on Ardmore (now available at our favourite kitchen and homeware store, Cookin), the distinctive ceramics and textile business also hailing from KZN that began as a simple idea, empowering local artists and creatives whose pieces now adorn the homes of the rich and famous and get auctioned by the likes of Christie’s. It’s quite true that if you visualise something, it can become a reality. My partner and I spent a few years in the Lowveld, and on each Old Year’s Eve we would climb the koppie in front of our home, and write down our goals for the year ahead while surveying the natural splendour in front of us. If I look back, most of what we envisioned came true. Some call it manifestation, or the Law of Attraction, but if you think quite practically about it, it’s not rocket science that if you work determinedly towards a goal that you’ve set your mind too, it’s quite likely to happen. The stories inside this edition of Life & Style are evidence of this. Until next time,

The Writing on the Wall

There’s a story behind the graffiti at concept car wash Machineworx at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre. Visual artist ‘That Damn Vandal’, aka Shaun Oakley, has taken his spray paint to large-scale urban walls, and even given a range of high-end Supercars an edgy overhaul. Life & Style sat down with him for a quickfire Q & A, before he tackles one of his craziest projects yet; a Rolls Royce.

Q: You have an art degree; how did you get into graffiti? A: I used to skateboard quite a bit and obviously with the territory, the two cultures often meet and I felt my calling for graffiti. It was during high school that I started to notice more and more of it. Q: Are you from KZN originally? A: Yes, born and raised in Durban. I lived in the UK for a couple of years which opened my eyes to graffiti even more. But home is Durban. Q: What has been your favourite or most memorable piece of work? A: There are so many memorable walls as each wall has had its own journey and challenges. I think the walls that are larger and more detailed stand out for me. I would have to say the H&A Associates Wall in Cornubia, Durban. Q: Tell us about the Machineworx brief – what was the brief, and how long did it take? A: The Machineworx project was a very special one as I worked alongside Brett for many months building and

Shaun Oakley adding my flavour to his vision. It was a very well thought out and planned project, and is a one of a kind place to go to. In total, I spent around four days painting, and it’s still one of my favourites to date. Purely because he trusted me so much and gave me room to do what I wanted to do. Q: Tell us about your artist’s tag, ‘That Damn Vandal’. A: Yeah, so it was actually a tricky one! I often carry stickers on me and stick them up when I travel. My wife caught me out the one time, shouting, ‘you Damn Vandal!’ I also chose the name as my business as I knew it would cause unrest among the graffiti scene, and get people talking about the name and myself as an artist. Plus it’s just easy for the public to remember. Q: Which artists do you follow, locally or internationally? A: I follow around 890 influential artists worldwide, too many to list, but each and every one of them really push the boundaries whether it be a tattoo artist, graffiti artist or illustrator. I think it’s very important to constantly

have healthy competition and inspiration to keep you inspired and pushing harder. Q: Where do you draw your ideas from? A: I take inspiration from everyday life; from people around me, to social media and the environment, colours, patterns, fashion, and unique styles. Q: You’ve done work on supercars – what would be your ultimate canvas to work on? A: Yes, I’ve painted around 14 highend cars now. I’ve been super blessed to have been given the opportunity and hope to keep pushing the boundaries. Cars are very challenging as the space is limited, whereas with large walls you can go wild. But I find not many people have the chance to paint Supercars so I often push for those. I want to stay unique and one step ahead. I’ve actually got a Rolls Royce in the pipeline so watch this space. It’s going to be nuts!

When the issue first came to the attention of those who value the park and understand what it represents to the community it serves, there was understandably a level of anger in the general response. This resulted in a public meeting in the park to ratify a mandate for a voluntary steering group to engage with the municipality to reverse the decision. The park, after all, belongs to the people and the municipality serves at the pleasure of the people, acting in the best interests of the majority. At least, that’s how I understand it.

RTIST Lungelo Gumede had never made a wax sculpture in his life when he first set foot in New York’s Madame Tussauds in 2004. He was already a student of the arts, having completed a year at Durban’s BAT Centre, then a diploma at DUT, and his portraits of famous people had garnered enough interest to propel him to a global stage. He was in New York to auction a portrait of Nelson Mandela he had painted, in aid of the basketball charity Hoops for Hope. The visit to Madame Tussauds was incidental, yet it proved to be one of the most pivotal moments in his life.

Born and schooled in Ndwedwe, KZN, where he matriculated at 18,

Lungelo’s professional trajectory has never swayed from the arts. His siblings are all creative, with his younger brothers involved in fashion and music, and his two older sisters in events management and academia. Lungelo, the middle child, seemed to always know what he wanted, but he didn’t want to be the proverbial starving artist. He wanted a career, and he wanted to make heads turn. He’s done just that with his impressive pop-up museum housed in The Pearls Mall in Umhlanga, chronicles the adult life of Nelson Mandela; from ambitious lawyer and lithe youthful boxer, to resigned prisoner clothed in rags surrounded by rubble, from triumphant leader

emerging from prison fist famously raised in victory with his then wife Winnie Madikizela Mandela, to victorious State President raising the World Cup Trophy. The museum is a snapshot of each of the most poignant moments from Mandela’s life, and Lungelo has kept it as authentic as possible, even employing a skilled tailor to manufacture the clothing. At just 32 years old, Lungelo has accomplished more than most. He’s travelled the world, from LA to Ankara, and has more recently been asked to paint the portraits of the cast of awardwinning television series Empire, which he will launch at a Los Angeles cocktail party of HBO executives once completed.

It’s not the first time he’s been asked to paint a famous person’s portrait. He hand delivered Oprah Winfrey’s portrait to her in Chicago in 2005. These days, the wax sculptures take up most of his time, and he’s employed a team of 10 people who he’s trained to assist with the cutting, sanding, casting and other processes involved. His studio, based at the BAT Centre, is a hive of activity as Lungelo is making preparations to open his own version of Madame Tussauds, a commercial wax museum at Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg. Until then, his collection of Madiba’s sculptures will be on show indefinitely at The Pearls for all to enjoy.

uly is always one of the busiest months on the KZN North Coast calendar. With school holidays on the go and masses to do in our province, tourists from around the country pound our beaches, racetracks and shopping centres - which is wonderful.

The highlight was of course, the Ballito Pro, now sponsored by O’Neill, that not only saw top international surfers giving us the most incredible entertainment (the winner this year was Deivid Silva from Brazil and runner up, Jack Freestone from Australia, who was also last year’s runner up), but it also included a community development initiative, the Development Surf Day, with young development surfers from clubs along the coast putting on some amazing performances. Running alongside the international surfing contest was the Ballito Pro Family Food

Festival at the Ballito Junction over two evenings in early July. On the first night in the ‘family food feud’, the winners were The Cuzzies – Abigail Van Der Linde and Thailen Von Allemann. In the ‘celeb cook off’ the winning team was musician Bok Van Blerk and Natasha Munien. Lewaine Von Allemann, organiser of the Ballito Pro Family Food Festival, said visitors were kept entertained at the two-day festival with numerous onsite activities. “A big thanks to all our sponsors as well as to all our young entrepreneurs, Eco Living Market traders, food and drink stalls and all other stall holders. Without their support the event would not have been such a success!” On the business front, we attended a Growth Club workshop for local business owners of SMME’s, with business coach Marlene Powell giving advice on the importance of giving one’s business a health check every three months, and explaining the importance of time mastery.

“Your most valuable asset is time,” she explained. “How you invest it is the key to your success.” Popular eatery Ray’s Kitchen at Dunkirk Estate was the venue for the 50th birthday celebrations of one of Ballito’s most celebrated artists, Natasha Barnes. Nat, who is the biggest selling South African artist overseas, keeps super fit running with the Dolphin Coast Striders - many of whom were present at her party. Finally, we spent a wonderful day on the Zimbali Golf Course for the MTN Ilembe Chamber Corporate Challenge that was filmed by Super Sport. Winners of the MTN Corporate Golf Challenge were the Siza Water team – Thabiso Magwaza, Michael Sigasa, Thabo Zuma and Sphelele Luthuli. Winners of the Ilembe Golf Club Challenge were the team from Umhlali Country Club. (We were excited to come in the top ten – somehow it happened!)

KIDS’ ROOM CHAOS

Its mid-year, and maybe a good time to revisit the ongoing chaos of your children’s rooms and get organised! Allen Petrie, carpenter, handyman and DIY go-to guy has a host of ideas to sort out the clutter. and stay ready for the term ahead:

S

chool holidays are over! Most parents breathe a huge sigh of relief as life returns to normal and the morning school routine replaces weeks of slow starts. Of course, all the plans that were made to sort out the kids’ rooms and get organised during the holidays fell by the wayside as we all, understandably so, just needed a break.

However, the new term is upon us bringing with it the sports, additional books, other extramural activities and of course, homework. I have a saying that goes “if you stay ready, you never have to get ready”. So here are a few ways you can get

Pack away and organise Perhaps your child’s room seems like a Herculean task to get sorted. Take a breath, and let’s get stuck in. Begin by sorting the items into piles. Make piles for clothing, sports gear, schoolbooks, computer equipment and accessories etc. Once the basics have been packed away, the next step is to look at storage options. Storage bins are a must. Wooden storage bins are easy to make and are much kinder to the environment than the plastic versions. If you have lots of things to store, then add some castors to the crate and wheel them around as you need. Low, wooden storage bins on castors are a must for any child’s room. Simply wheel them under the bed for extra storage. Shelves are next. Simple wooden box shelves can go a long way towards getting clutter off the floor. Innovative new ways of mounting shelves make it easy for anyone to do. A place to work Homework is best done at a desk in

the quiet of a bedroom or study. Simple desks can be made out of trestles and a flat piece of anything really! Simple plans for a traditional school desk are available online and it’s become trendy to find old desks and refurbish them. If you happen to find one at a second-hand furniture store, a bit of sanding and some Rustoleum spray paint will transform the desk into a funky, practical addition to any room. Garage storage Clutter almost always ends up in the garage, which becomes a holding area for your unwanted things before, ultimately, they end up at the rubbish dump. Store your items on the walls using a French Cleat system and see just how efficient your space can be. I-Beams are another option. Both of these methods are great for storing sports goods, books and virtually any other items. Cost effective and simple to install, these two methods will transform your space in the garage and will make finding stuff quick and easy. Daily organising board The item in our

home which is used most often is a chalk board, mounted in the kitchen. It’s used for writing notes, hanging keys, keeping important pieces of paper and general planning. Making one couldn’t be more simple. All you need are a few pieces of cheap pine, a piece of hardboard and some chalk spray paint. The entire project can be completed in less than an hour and needs only the most basic of tools. All of these ideas are simple, quick DIY projects and tutorials are widely available online. Happy organising!

Dog training can be hard core and working dogs in particular, really enjoy the challenge. But most dogs that come here with their loving owners are domestic pets that need a little basic direction. EASY-ACCESS H2O

Keeping hydrated while trail running is not as easy as road running, where you can easily nip into a shop or carry a bottle of water in your hands. Ultra trail runner, and medical doctor, Rosie Carey shares her expert advice on how to keep your fluids up while hitting the dirt. a longer run. There are many different hydration packs available and prices range from a couple of hundred to a few thousand Rands, which can all prove very confusing to the beginner. Here’s how to choose right hydration pack for you:

I

F you are new to trail running you may not even know what a hydration pack is, so I’ll start with the very basics.

If you are running for longer than an hour, you will probably get thirsty. Running on trail doesn’t lend itself easily to nipping into shops or carrying a water bottle; you want your hands free in case there is clambering required and to protect you if you trip. The solution is a hydration pack, which is essentially a backpack fitted with a bladder and drinking system, that allows you to carry your own fluid and keep your hands free. The hydration pack also has various pockets to stash food, jackets, phones etc. when you are doing

Decide how much you want to spend: Are you likely to be taking your trail running to the level of ultra or stage races, or are you happy to stay at weekend warrior level? If you’re planning a long trail running career it is probably worth spending more money on a really good pack while if you want to keep your trail running at fun-run level, opt for a cheaper pack. What distance are you planning on running? For shorter runs you can get away with a light, minimalist backpack because the amount of equipment you need is less. For longer runs, especially mountain runs, you will need a bigger pack that is able to fit all your compulsory gear. For shorter runs a bladder with a one-litre or one-and-a-half-litre capacity is probably enough, but if you are planning more than a three hour run, get a bladder with a two-litre capacity and look for a pack that has

front pockets to carry one or two water bottles. Comfort and fit become more important the longer you run because if you have an ill-fitting pack, running more than two hours is going to cause chaffing. If you are planning on running longer distances it may be worth buying a more expensive pack that is gender-and-size specific as opposed to a cheaper onesize-fits-all pack. Ease of access Does the pack have pockets that are easily accessible without you having to take your pack off (pockets at the front or on the sides)? You don’t want to have to undo your pack and take it off every time you need a bite to eat. How easy is it to take out the bladder and refill it? Again, you don’t want to waste time struggling to take out the bladder each time you want to refill it. Even if you aren’t a racing snake and don’t mind spending a bit of time taking in the scenery en-route while sorting through your pack, continually having to take it off and put it back on again can become tedious. The Fit The pack you choose must feel comfortable. Try on a couple of different packs; jump up and down to see whether the pack

fits snugly or if it jiggles around. If there’s a lot of movement, you are going to get chaffed. Make sure that the shoulder straps don’t dig into you and that the bladder fits into the pack snugly when full. Check that the pack is easily adjustable: as you drink from your bladder or remove items from the pack you may need to tighten it and you want to be able to do this easily while you’re running. Compatibility Some packs are only compatible with the same brand of bladder and water bottle so be aware of this, especially if the accessories are pricey. Also look for additional compatibility features, such as attachments for trekking poles. Hydration packs are invaluable for trail running and taking the time to do the research and choose the right one for you will only enhance your experience. Hydration packs are available locally at Poobie Naidoo’s Sports Wholesalers at Ballito Junction Mall, or Sportsman’s Warehouse at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

I

t amazes me how Willard Beach comes alive when the Ballito Pro hits town and people that you never see normally, are out in full force enjoying some winter sunshine.

This year the Pro, now sponsored by O’Neill, drew huge crowds akin to what you would normally see on the busy days in peak summer, and the highlight this year was the amazing weather. Sunshine and waves were plentiful, and it was great to see everyone sporting their summer gear in the middle of winter. The surfing never fails to impress and with 200 top international surfers in town, it’s a dream come true for the local surfers. The Ballito Pro is one of over 60 events on the Qualifying Series (QS), and is one of the top six with the highest rating; a QS 10 000. Other events around the world are rated from as little as a QS 1 000 to a QS 6 000, which means that whatever the ratings, that equates to the number of points that a surfer can score per event provided s/he wins. Surfers are given points based on their positions, which are added to their scores and they are placed on a ranking board with all of the other surfers. On the QS there are over 2 000 men and 138 women all competing for a place in the Championship Tour, which is whittled down to

The Beach Brief Kwadukuza beach manager and super fan of all things surf-related, ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honneysett, debriefs us on this years’ Ballito Pro, and explains just how tough it is to pull off an event of this scale.

“On the QS there are over 2 000 men and 138 women all competing for a place in the Championship Tour, which is whittled down to 45 men and 20 women.” 45 men and 20 women. Surfers must compete in a number of events to reach a total score, and so they choose which events to compete in keeping their scoring potential in mind. For the toprated events like the Ballito Pro, only the top 120 QS surfers get automatic entry into the event and all others must surf a trial, where first or second place gets you into the main event. So it’s not as easy as it looks, and what makes things even harder is that the top 45 Championship Tour (CT) surfers are also allowed to surf QS events to help them stay on that tour, where the top 10 QS qualifiers

go up into the CT, and the bottom 10 on the CT drop down to the QS at the end of each year. Then there is the challenge of finance to get to events, securing accommodation, living expenses and the equipment, which all comes out of sponsorships and winnings. As far as international sport goes, surfers don’t have an easy time out on tour, and these days you won’t find the surfers out on the town wasting money, especially those from countries with low-value currencies. Then, there’s the cost of running a surf competition; all of the people involved need to get paid, accommodated and fed,

which equates to a large sum of money. The burden of this usually comes out of the event sponsor or sponsors (generally surf brands). As complex as it all seems, it’s a great show when it comes to town, and for me, it brings the community together, young and old, as we soak up our annual dose of surfing at the very highest level. Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf Report on Mike in the Morning and The Afternoon Drive on 88FM.

12 SHOPPING

BOTTOMS UP, BALLITO Enjoy our tips on tipple, savvy shopping ideas, and news from the world of our favourite beverages.

DECANTING DOS & DON’TS It’s true; the simple act of pouring wine and allowing it some ‘airtime’ really does improve the flavours. If you’d like to put decanting to the test, the noses that know at Anthonij Rupert Wines have the following advice:

RED WINES:

THE BELLE OF THE BALLS

Nearly all red wines benefit from decanting. There are two primary processes involved; oxidation and evaporation. •Light-Bodied Red Wines: 20–30 minutes. Light-bodied red wines include Pinot Noir and Gamay (aka “Beaujolais”). •Medium-Bodied Red Wines: 30-60 minutes, including Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Merlot and Malbec. •Full-Bodied Red Wines: 60 minutes or more. Examples include Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Petit Sirah, Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre).

WHITE AND ROSÉ WINES

Up to 30 minutes if the wine shows signs of reduction. Most white and rosé wines don’t need to be decanted. In fact, some aromatic compounds, like the passionfruit flavour in Sauvignon Blanc, waft away! So, the only reason you might want to decant a white or a rosé wine is if it’s “reduced.” Reduction in white wine sometimes smells like burnt match, but most of the time it just lacks aromas. If you smell only “mineral-like” flavours and very few fruit smells, your white might have some reduction. No big deal! In most cases, pouring the wine into a glass and waiting about 15 minutes fixes the issue. You should smell a lot more fruit aromas after you wait. (We know it’s hard, but try!)

Anyone who’s ever tried to wash a decanter after a red wine-filled dinner party needs these stainless steel cleaning balls from Riedel, which are designed precisely for this purpose. A revelation! R179, from yuppiechef.com

SPARKLING WINES

There are a few very rare cases when you can decant a sparkling wine, but it’s hardly ever necessary. Some grower Champagne and small-production Champagne wines have reduction (burnt match smell) and improve with decanting. Generally speaking, a sparkling wine decanter has much less surface area and is ‘amphora’ shaped in order to preserve bubble finesse.

WINTER WARMERS Lamb Shanks: De Grendel Merlot, R174,99 First reveals a delicate all-sorts of berries; red, black and blue, followed by aniseed, cedar and liquorice. French oak supports, while structure comes from tannins, as do the light mocha flavours. Texture is smooth and well-rounded. Enjoy for the next 5 years.

If you’re fighting the flu, or just feeling low on gas, try a shot of Fire Tonic from The Cultured Whey, a business borne out of a concern for our gut health and our immune systems. Containing Kombucha raw vinegar, ginger, horseradish, garlic, cayenne pepper, turmeric, and other fiery ingredients, it tastes a lot like a shot of delicious braai marinade to be honest! But it does the trick. Based at Oaklands Country Manor near Harrismith, their Fire Tonic and other immune-boosting elixirs are available at most local health shops including Homegrown Fresh Wholefoods at The Market at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre, as well as online at faithful-to-nature.co.za for around R165.

We can still enjoy heartier dishes and drinks in the cooler North Coast evenings! We asked the experts at OK Liquor at Zimbali Wedge for their recommendations for the perfect pairings for these 3 popular winter dishes. Rich Oxtail Stew: Anura 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, R169,99

Classic Durban Curry: Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Constantia, R114,99

An elegant example of this noble variety, showing layers of ripe blackcurrants, red berry, mulberry and cherry flavours with hints of cedar and walnuts. A balanced wine with lots of fruit and fine notes of spice and tobacco on the palate.Displays a smooth, complex finish.

Showcasing an alluring pale citrine glow, the Sauvignon Blanc hailing from Constantia-based Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, is a deliciously dry, unwooded white wine. Spritely notes of gooseberry, green fig and nuances of green pepper greet you on the nose, leading you to a full and richly textured palate.

Wines all available at OK Liquors, Zimbali Wedge. Call them on 065 221 1007.

The

Beachy Bolthole

Most South Africans love Mexican food and, when it’s good, it turns an ordinary occasion into a fiesta! We are delighted that Salsa at the Lifestyle Centre has been revitalized with an excellent team and the food has never been better. Try them with a traditional Margarita and… the party’s on!

Life & Style were recently transported to an idyllic hideaway, complete with beach bar, sun loungers, and the crash of the ocean. Was it Mauritius? Bali perhaps? Nope! It was right here on our doorstep, at the new-look Beach Café and Bar at The Fairmont, Zimbali.

I

The Beach Café and Bar at the Fairmont Zimbali hotel is an Instagram-ready setting. Now, with its newly developed menu and refreshed décor, there’s even more reason to settle in for an afternoon of pool-side downtime. General manager Mike Jackson, who joined the team at The Fairmont in January, is bringing fresh new energy and ideas, and The Beach Café is the first of quite a few refurbishments on the cards for the resort, replacing what was previously the Mexican restaurant. Chef Tony Kocke, who joined The Fairmont in 2017 and who has previously won a Michelin Star, is the executive chef responsible for running all aspects of the six kitchens that serve the Beach Café and Bar, Bite Pool Bar, Coral Tree Restaurant, OSA Restaurant, 31 Degrees and their InRoom Dining. The new-look menu for the Beach Café ranges from healthier light

meals, starters, mains, to bespoke pizzas and desserts with flavours from Asia, South Africa (the unmistakable Durban curry stands out), and the US. Menu highlights include panko crumbed prawns with pineapple salsa, salmon wraps with avo mousse, a delicious Asian-style seared tuna main course (our personal favourite), various snack baskets, seafood platters, and an array of new shisa nyama platters for meat lovers. The Beach Café and Bar offers a stunning getaway to relax with friends or the family, as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. And what would a beach bar be without colourful cocktails, bottles of chilled bubbly and a worthy wine list? The skilled barkeeps are whipping up fresh new flavours, including classic Margaritas, and an Elderflower Vodka Collins (which by the way is quite low calorie with just soda, vodka and a dash of fragrant elderflower syrup). This elegant yet casual restaurant is open to anyone, not just those staying at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort or on the estate. It’s open from 11am – 5pm on Sundays to Thursdays and 11am – 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Bookings are essential in order to gain a gate code for access to the hotel. Contact the Fairmont Zimbali Resort’s dining team on 032 538 5000 or email dining@zimbaliresort. com.

Mamas Platos

Mama’s Platos marry Mexican flavours with South African taste. From marinated pan-grilled prawns and calamari served on a bed of Mexican rice, to grilled Arrachera sirloin steak or succulent fillet steak, to the best of both worlds with prawn and fillet skewers marinated in a traditional orange and lime dressing and served with Mexican red rice, these platos still pack a Mexican flavour punch. without the usual tortilla!

Enchiladas

An enchilada is a corn tortilla rolled around a filling of chicken, Mexican mince or refried beans and fajita vegetables (which makes for a superb vegetarian option), all with coriander and lime rice, topped with hot salsa, melted white cheddar and spring onion, and baked in the oven. Think of it as a Mexican lasagne!

THE VOLVO XC90 ARMOURED – POLITICIAN PERFECT

BALLITO

CAR SERVICE CENTRE Anton

V

OLVO is synonymous with safety. For decades, it’s made the most robust models with the highest protection standards cars can have. But its latest model takes it to a whole new level.

It’s called the XC90 Armoured. It might look like any other big Volvo SUV but it’s a 4.5-tonne fortress on wheels that will shield its occupants from gunfire and explosives. It even offers them a secret escape route if they come under attack. But while it might guarantee your welfare in a battle zone, the R7 900 000 asking price could blow a bank account into smithereens. This is the first Volvo to ever be awarded with a VPAM VR8 protection rating. Why’s that important? Because it’s only granted to vehicles that have 360-degree ballistic and explosive resistance.

Volvo says customers have been asking for it to make an armoured car for years, and now it can supply one to those who require ‘heightened protection’, says Stephan Green, marketing director at Volvo Cars Special Vehicles. His department - based in Torslanda in Sweden - starts with a R1 100 000 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Inscription model and retrofits it into a tank. ‘Production is classified, with stringent procedures and oversight in place in order to attain the stipulated ballistic requirements,’ says Green. But he does reveal some of the bombproof specifications. For instance, the high-strength steel armour plating is 10 millimetres thick and the window glass is 50mm deep to withstand bullets. All of this extra protection does mean more bulk, though.

The armour adds approximately 1 400 kilograms to the XC90, which brings the total weight of the car up to 4,490kg - inclusive of five occupants. To cope with the increased weight, the car is fitted with upgraded suspension and new brakes. Other modifications include a earsplitting horn and secret escape hatch hidden behind the centre seat in the second row. Slip through the gap and there’s an emergency boot release so the underthreat individual can make a run for it. Want one? You can put an order in now and it will be ready for delivery by the end of the year. And before Volvo drop it off on your driveway, first they’ll put it through a variety of ballistic tests to ‘ensure the required protection rating is fulfilled’. It doesn’t get much more thorough than that.
