hen I was an eager intern at a national women’s magazine, fresh out of ‘varsity and full of ideals, social media was but a blip on th radar (and I have yet to celebrate my 40th birthday in case you’re wondering).
My first task, much to my horror, was to get in touch with Catherine Zeta-Jones’ PR team and secure an exclusive image and interview rights for our next cover story. Hello deep-end my old friend! I was given an email address, a landline phone number, and two weeks. Phoning a fixed-line proved tricky with the time difference between Los Angeles and 17 August: Partner up Johannesburg, and the frenetic Hollywood PRO took Join Rain Farm for a fun-filled evening agonising days to reply to of sokkie! A cash bar will be available, me. It was down to the wire. I with good ol’ fashioned boerewors rolls, had something to prove to my hamburgers and prego rolls available to new editor and a celeb to pin purchase. The cost is R120, unless you want down. hardcopy art on my wall at home. I happily snap away with my Smartphone camera, but I still prefer a framed portrait of my children; an impermanent moment made concrete. How lovely that in the esoteric, digital world, we still have the privilege of the tactile and the tangible. Some media experts would call me out as being nostalgic, but I do genuinely think people still like to hold onto something physical. I mentioned this in passing to artist Jane Digby as we gazed at one of her portraits, which will shortly not only make an appearance at her upcoming exhibition at Simbithi, but will soon grace the stage at the Florence Biennale art exhibition in Italy in October. She agreed. Life is fleeting enough; the rest of our world needn’t be. Part of Jane’s upcoming exhibition (see page six for our chat with her) is a deep reflection of her recent battle with breast cancer, and our conversation reminded me that life, much like the esoteric waves of technology, is just as transitory. It feels good to have something to hold on to. In a sea of modern digital artists, I think it’s important to celebrate ‘old-fashioned’ tactile art – after all, good art should transcend the canvas it’s been painted on. It may be static, but it has the power to move you, offering endless depths of perception. That’s why in this edition, we are celebrating beautiful, tangible things, especially in art and design. If I had the choice of once more pinning down an interview with Ms. Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2019 or in 2003, in all honesty I’d go with 2003 – it may have proved a far easier task now, but from it I learnt resilience, grit, and gained a profound sense of accomplishment, none of which could have come from the instant gratification tech offers. Similarly, while Life & Style offers a digital version of our content, as well as multiple other media platforms, there’s still nothing better than picking up a hard copy, settling on the couch, inhaling the nostalgic scent of newsprint, and allowing your thoughts to transcend the pages. Until next time,

Let’s face it, most wire art in South Africa is made for tourists, and can be quite clichéd, but it remains a uniquely African art form and is often someone’s daily income. Every now and then you come across a true gem that makes you look twice. That’s what Siza Kadango’s wire art is; the Zimbabwean is re-imagining the industrious African art form and creating models around iconic KZN wildlife, from King fish to kingfishers! We just love his use of vibrant colour, and typically coastal flora and fauna. Find Siza on the sidewalk between Food Lovers and the Shell garage in Ballito. He’ll also make custom creations for your home or business. Call him on 074 264 3342.

FINDING THE FAIR MARKET VALUE
If you’re thinking of buying or selling a home, Harcourts Dolphin Coast’s Jean-Pierre Pienaar breaks down the basics of how to price a home.
I
OFTEN get asked the question, “how do I value my house and what square meter price should I work on?” As simple as this question seems, this is not the only factor in pricing a home. So, I thought I would share some basic factors we take into account when determining fair market value.
Where is the home situated? Is it in an estate or freestanding? Does the home have views? What does the home offer? How many bedrooms and bathrooms? Does the house have security? How many garages are there? Is there staff accommodation? What condition is the garden, entertainment area and pool in, if it has these? Has the house been converted in any way to energy-saving, for example solar or back-up power, and so the list goes on. Then, we look at the size of the house and the plot, and start the comparative market analysis that indicates what the market is doing, the history and current sales in the area, as well as what is currently on the market and if those properties are actually priced correctly, or if the prices are inflated. Now we can establish fair market value, which may not be the replacement value of the home, and must not be confused with such. You do not want to over price your home with the expectation of buyers negotiating the price with you. All you will do is miss out on serious buyers in the crucial marketing period. Further, you do not want to price your property too low when you could be making more money. 10 common selling mistakes: • Ensure you’re not selecting agents who price your home the highest, without solid stats. • Don’t choose an agent based on their valuation. Look at their track record or
ability to market the home. • Beware of pricing the home above the market value in the initial and most critical marketing period. • Don’t neglect to ask for a marketing plan from the agents you interview. • Don’t forget to take note of other properties for sale in the area. • Only sign an offer after checking the details with an attorney or property professional. • Be wary of turning down a fair, market realistic offer, hoping for a higher offer. • Don’t place the home on the market before it is in the best possible condition. • Failing to give viewing access to available buyers is a problem. • Ensure permanent fixtures remain with the property. Things that don’t determine the value of your home: •What you paid for your home when you purchased it. •What you need to get out to achieve your next purchase. •What your friends and neighbour say it’s worth. •What it would cost to rebuild your home today. •What you may want for your home. Possible interview questions for your agent: •What is your company’s market share in this area? •Names and addresses of 3 recent happy clients you’ve helped to sell •Do you have any company awards or recognition? •Provide a track record of your sales. •What is your sales price versus asking price ratio? •Do you have a marketing plan? •How will you be giving my property maximum exposure? •Do you give a service guarantee?

DAVE GUSELLI joins 88FM He’s hosted SA’s best radio shows for 30 years , from the legendary Capital Radio 604, to the airwaves of Cape Town. Dave Guselli is a familiar voice across the country, and now the North Coast can look forward to his signature sound on the airwaves of 88FM Ballito.
D
AVE GUSELLI’S fate was sealed when he first arrived in South Africa for a holiday 30 years ago; he never cashed in his return ticket to Manchester, after landing a job on South Africa’s first independent station, Capital Radio 604.
“My audition was on a cassette tape, couriered to the station in Port St. Johns. I made a joke about Cliff Richard, and I’m convinced that’s why they hired me!” he laughs good naturedly. He’s worked with the likes of Trevor Shabalala, Kevin Savage, Oscar Renzi, Mohamed Surtee, Mervyn John and John
Burkes. His voice has been the sound of many an afternoon drive and morning show, where his banter and distinctive Mancunian accent has garnered a longstanding following. He began his career at the tender age of 14, filling in for a nightclub DJ in Manchester. He was instructed in no uncertain terms to play, not speak, but “no one can tell me not to talk!” adds Dave. He proved so popular, that the pub, a distinctive floating ship called the North Westward Ho!, hired him in place of the DJ he was filling in for. His childhood was also marked by trips to Old Trafford with his grandfather, and the ubiquitous roar of the crowd from the famous stadium a mere two kilometres from his home. He followed his teenage gig with a job at a
hospital radio station, playing music to patients (“I had to be very careful with my choice of songs,” he laughs), which he followed with Manchester’s Piccadilly Radio. But it was that fateful trip to South Africa that cemented Dave’s career. He has especially fond memories of Capital, made up of a motley crew of the cowboys of radio who broke barriers throughout the 1980s, brazenly playing and saying what they wanted to during the height of Apartheid from the remote reaches of the old Transkei, before moving to Johannesburg, then Durban in 1990. It was around this time that Dave was poached by Radio Port Natal to host their afternoon drive, which he did until 2011, seeing through the transition into East Coast Radio in 1994. After many years in KZN, Dave made the move to independent station Magic 828AM in Cape Town, where he an co-host Nicola Duddy made magic of their own with their on-air banter. Dave Guselli will soon be joining 88FM Radio Life

A MILESTONE MOMENT
“
Ashton International College MD, Joe Erasmus, reflects on the recent 10th anniversary alumni gathering, and the legacy being created after a decade of excellence.
For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.”
Our 10th anniversary has hit us at a supersonic speed. If one compares us to other traditional schools, 10 years is quite minuscule. However, what Ashton has achieved is remarkable. The emotions that drive the above quote have been experienced and felt, and through determination and perseverance, we have lived up to the expectations of ‘Excellence Belongs to the Zealous’. We were constantly under pressure on the cultural and sport side and with time, grit, blood, sweat and tears, began making strides in productions, performances and results. The introduction of Cambridge opened the doors for a new direction of curriculum, and as each year passed by we were able to build on the previous year’s success. We thank Mr. and Mrs. Buys for their vision, direction and dedication to education at Ashton. They have allowed us to grow a campus from 459 to 1 400. As short as 10 years might be, it has been a long road with ups and downs, but through their generosity we have been able to establish a Legacy landmark on the Dolphin Coast. How apt is our College prayer: “To shine like a beacon on the Dolphin Coast” From 10 years ago, to now, where our College name is mentioned in the hallowed grounds of our most traditional schools. ‘We have come a long way very quickly”
In the same breath, we say it with humility as we have achieved this with God’s Grace, presence and direction. To put things in perspective, we have literally been a construction site since day one, and how appropriate that the last building has been named the Legacy Hall. The dictionary definition of legacy is “a gift of personal property by will”. Your legacy will live forever in these beautiful buildings, but we know that that is not the way you want to be remembered. Your biggest gift is knowing that your investment has a priceless return in that we are affecting lives witnessing an outstanding academic record, sharing in the success of great sporting achievements, and collaborating with the cultural department to ensure world-class productions. The legacy is about what is happening inside the classrooms and halls. The legacy is about the teachers nurturing, teaching, facilitating and educating. The legacy is about those students who are now working or studying and it would be interesting to see how many past students have become entrepreneurs, following in your footsteps. It reminds me of a speech by Tony Greg who was a guest speaker at his old school. He said, “It is not that you played rugby for the 1st team or represented your school at provincial level for cricket or that you were the top academic, but rather that when you left, you were a student of quality, of sound character and who had intrinsically a set of core values and morals. From this, one can discern the difference between the buildings and what is happening inside. Here I would like to give praise to our staff.
Education is not only about ‘chalk and talk’, but rather a relationshipbuilding process driven by emotions, understanding and being unique. We should all take cognisance of the phrase used by Mrs Buys in the Grace Wing; “There are no disabilities but only different kinds of abilities. We all learn differently.” It is in our educational philosophy that EQ is of prime importance. It is the holistic approach which differentiates us. People will come and go, but in 20 years the Ashton Legacy must remain the same. Having a Christian ethos, being family orientated and being a valuedriven College must continue as core values. Young students must be great not because of their strengths, but because of their character. Forrest Gump was right. “Life is like a box of chocolates – there is somebody out there that loves the orange and strawberry chocolate.” We are different in so many ways, which has driven us to success. Mr. and Mrs. Buys, we acknowledge you, we salute you and we thank you. Long may your legacy live on. Visit ashtonballito. co.za

PR guru Glenda Thompson has her finger on the pulse of the North Coast social scene. Here’s what’s been hot and happening.

APPY Women’s Month everyone! August has literally been bursting with networking events, and one thing is for certain, women know how to network. There are so many new networking forums popping up around the North Coast, and further afield. It’s a matter of Googling to find the right one to suit you. If you’re new in the area, or have recently started your own business, one of the best networking forums to join is the tried-andtested BNI.
I popped into the local Matrix BNI breakfast meeting earlier this month at the Umhlali Country Club and was reminded how important it is to have a solid group of colleagues who will pass on referrals to help your business grow. Contact their vice president, Ana Comacho, on 032 525 4711 for information on how to join. Hirsch’s Ballito was a hive of activity recently with their Women’s Month Women in Business activation. They held a Women In Business Expo with business women from around the North Coast being given the opportunity to showcase their businesses. From skincare products to glasses, shoes, plants and everything in between, everyone had the opportunity to display their wares, and by all accounts, it was a great success. The Voice of Hirsch’s, Luci Hirsch, was the guest speaker for the morning and she congratulated everyone for being great multi-taskers and pillars in the community. We also attended a monthly Business Networking morning in Umhlanga and saw a variety of business owners and corporate employees coming together to network, exchange ideas and listen to Network Configuration’s directors, Iain Emerson and Wayne Erradu give a thorough run down on the latest trends available for businesses in the IT sector. here’s great diversity to the work of Nicole Pletts. She can move from smoky, industrial landscapes in hues of grey; to celebratory botanicals; or a peloton of cyclists, a sense of their speed and movement captured by clever brushstrokes and blurred lines. Her range of subject matter is out of necessity, she explains. “One needs to be constantly stimulated, and there’s always a concept or a story behind my art.”
Nicole has been painting for over 25 years. It began as an outlet for her after working for her then husband and running after busy twin boys and a daughter. It offered her the headspace she needed; a few hours of quiet reflection and meditative work. She attended classes with, and received counsel from, the likes of celebrated artists Thelma Buzzard and Pascale Chandler. Even from the start Nicole sold some of her works, but it was only later, when her husband left, that Nicole gave herself two years to turn her art into a fully-fledged business that would support her family. She did just that. With a background in accountancy and mathematics, she consciously merged her creative side with her practical side. “I worked until two or three in the morning, painting,” she explains. “I spent time researching, and I created my own website,” so it’s not that her art miraculously turned into a business overnight; it
took effort. Initially, Nicole may not have had the luxury of creating her art on an intellectual whim. It had to also generate income, and now it’s evident that she has found the balance. She structures her time practically around producing art that has a wider appeal, and art that is conceptual (her ‘body of work’), with a more niche market in mind. Nicole’s original medium of choice was watercolours, with an inkling to do wildlife, but despite the advice of her peers, she opted to do botanicals, which have proved one of her more popular themes. A stroll through her own home will paint a different picture though; while the botanicals feature prominently, (and beautifully), her work has also thematically featured men at work, a poignant series of portraits of nuns, and she is busy prepping for a showing in Hermanus, entitled Journey, that includes various versions of an image of her son, Nicholas, in a perpetual state of departure to an unknown destination. Her other work has frequently included her other children, son Campbell and daughter Alex, and with her work already traveling as far as a gallery in Hong Kong, it’s obvious her work speaks a universal language of it’s own.
S
It was her husband, local lawyer Gavin Steinhobel, who suggested she pursue interiors after visiting Gateway one day, and 25 days later she opened Home Flair in Newcastle. In 2006, the Ballito Home Flair store came up for sale at the Lifestyle Centre, and it seemed Debbie’s path to helping people create beautiful spaces was set. Gavin then ran the business while Debbie took time out to have her two children, and when he returned to his law practice, Schané Anderson, owner of
Olala Interiors, sought legal counsel from him one day. She needed a competent and fabulous business partner and Gavin played matchmaker. He knew instinctively his wife and Schané would be a good match. Schané had been in the interiors game, and Olala was originally her brand which she first established in Johannesburg in 1993, and then re-established the brand in Ballito in 2009. The family had a holiday property in Umdloti, so a move to the North Coast felt like a natural progression. In 2009, Schané opened in the Lifestyle Centre, and her and Debbie laugh about first being competitors before they became partners. “She walked into my shop and I just loved her,” explains Debbie. couple of weeks, they had merged their businesses, and that was just five short years ago. Debbie and Schané’s work is by no means limited to the North Coast – they create picture-perfect homes across the country and across borders, many of which have appeared in national magazines and luxury lifestyle television programmes, such as Top Billing. They travel the globe regularly visiting trade shows and design hubs from Cologne to Paris, where they glean inspiration and inform their residential creative work, ensuring their clients’ domestic spaces are bang on trend. Olala has its own factory in Shakashead, where they manufacture bespoke furnishings, a logistics office, a beautiful retail space at Ballito Junction Mall, and their design office operating from the mezzanine level in the same space.
Top Tips from Olala • Be selective when choosing art and fabrics; ‘noble’ fibres like linens, wool, silk and cotton are more expensive, but they make all the difference. • Don’t throw good money after bad; rather go slowly then and build up your home with investment pieces if you don’t have budget to recreate your space in one go. • You 100 percent get what you pay for, so customer-made design pieces over disposable cheaper options will last a lifetime. 032 940 0399 info@olalainteriors.com Shop 639b, Ballito Junction Mall, Ballito
month when it comes to celebrating local art, as two of KZN’s most eir work. etts in Mount Edgecombe, and Jane Digby in Ballito.
JANE DIGBY
“
EVERY day I look around me and can’t believe how lucky I am” says Jane Digby of her surroundings. Her studio is based at her home, and it’s filled with art. Not just hers’ but the art of her peers and friends.
Her workspace overlooks the rolling green hills of Simbithi, and while the views are calming Jane is also busy prepping for one of the most significant exhibitions of her life; a dual showing, one entitled Hymn To Her, the other If Not Now… When? One is an ode to the influences and experiences of the past few years of her life, while Hymn To Her is an intimate exploration of her recent battle with breast cancer, a lifealtering event which Jane has chosen to view as a celebration of life. The two exhibitions may have separate themes, but they echo a similar sentiment; that life is for the living. Jane has been painting for over 20 years, an endeavour that began in earnest when she was pregnant with her daughter, Jemma, but since her mother also painted art has
always been in her life. It was her other daughter, Tayla, who photographed her while in the throes of cancer treatment, and the visuals proved to be a catalyst for the upcoming exhibition. “It was hard-hitting,” explains Jane. “I was staring cancer in the face, through my daughter’s lens. It was confronting, and it sparked a series of drawings of my own reflection.” “Then, while I was lying in a hospital bed recovering from surgery, I had visions of this exhibition,” she adds, and she knew it was something she had to pursue. Incidentally, it was also while lying in hospital when Jane received an email from the Florence Biennale, inviting her to showcase three of her works at the prestigious Italian art showcase. It was a welcome affirmation during a difficult time. Three of her works on display at the upcoming exhibition at the Simbithi Country Club will be destined for Florence in October. The exhibition will also showcase other artists who’ve been touched by cancer in some way, including Dee Donaldson, Sue Whitmore, Carol Hayward Fell, the sculptures of Bonginkosi Mabhena, as well as extracts of prose and poetry. It’s open to all ages, and Jane hopes it will offer a space for reflection.
If Not…When? and A Hymn to Her open on 28 August at 6pm and run until 1 September at the Simbithi Country Club. Walkabouts with the artist will take place each day at 10:30am. Visit jjdigby.com

GET GEARED UP Keen to take your trail-running to the next level? Dr Rosie Carey is a mine of information, so we asked her to break down the basics of essential gear to start investing in.
O
NE of the positive benefits of road running is that you really require hardly any gear for it: a pair of running shoes, some shorts and that’s about it. Trail-running can be as simple as a pair of trail-running shoes, but if you plan on taking it a bit more seriously you may need to start looking at buying some extra gear.
Races often have ‘compulsory equipment’ lists. These lists aren’t a ploy to try to get you to buy more stuff, or because the race organisers are being difficult, but are essential for the terrain you will be running in.
Trail-running, by definition, is off-road. This means that conditions can vary from desert heat to freezing cold (literally), rocky mountain path to slippery. muddy forest trail. And it’s not uncommon to twist an ankle or trip and fall while trail running, especially if you are tired and the legs aren’t being quite as obedient as they should be. The list of essential equipment is to protect you from the elements and to (possibly) save your life if you do get into a difficult situation. HYDRATION PACK I covered this in the last article, but in summary a hydration
pack should have capacity for at least a litre of fluid (more if the run is longer). Remember that if conditions are hot and humid you may require more fluid. As a general rule, bank on 500ml/hour. WATERPROOF JACKET This is an important one because people often confuse windproof jackets with waterproof jackets. Windproof jackets are usually lighter and cheaper than waterproof jackets so people are tempted to use them instead of waterproof jackets, but if it is pouring with rain, within a few minutes your windproof jacket

There was an interesting gathering at the Scout Hall in Townsend Park on Sunday afternoon. DA Councillor Tommy du Toit invited members of the public to a presentation on developments of interest with special regard to the proposed sale of a portion of the park by the Municipality. Also under the spotlight was service delivery in general for the Ballito area. Predictably the Municipal Manager who had been invited to the gathering, was nowhere to be seen but there was a presentation by Christo Botha, the last of the Old Guard at the Municipality. He gave us a no holds barred understanding of how things have changed and it is clear that we are in a very precarious situation. There was a massive general power outage across Ballito on Sunday caused by aging infrastructure and Christo had attended to it brilliantly with the limited resources at this disposal. He has over thirty years of experience here and is eminently qualified to do the job. But he is obviously extremely concerned about the future. There is a massive shortage of capacity – what used to take four years of applied study has now been fast tracked to four weeks and the results of this brilliant piece of legislature can be seen in the chaos that reigns in municipalities across the country. Ours is particularly bad because of the
will be soaked through and you will be at best, cold and uncomfortable and at worst, at risk of hypothermia. Waterproof jackets are made of a waterproof material and have sealed seams and zips to ensure that very little water gets through. SPACE BLANKET A space blanket is a foil blanket that is ubiquitous to most first aid kits. They work on the principle of reflecting body heat to keep you warm. I have known of a case in which a trail runner injured his leg and was in a very remote place. Emergency response workers took a couple of hours to get to him and covering himself with a space blanket probably prevented him from becoming hypothermic. THERMAL BASE LAYER If you are doing a run that goes through the night or in which the weather could be bad, a thermal base layer is essential. This is a tightfitting long sleeve top that keeps you warm while still wicking moisture away from your skin. CHARGED CELLPHONE Not just for scenic selfies. There are a few emergency apps such as MySOS that you can download in case you get into trouble. ENERGY BAR This is not always on the compulsory list, but I always take along an energy bar or gel. You will be grateful for it if you get lost or end up taking longer en-route than you expected. WHISTLE This is so you can call for help if necessary. Remote places don’t always have cellphone reception. There are other items that are not on the compulsory list, but may be worth considering taking along, such as; a Buff, cap, anti-chafe cream, sunblock, trekking poles.
Most of the gear mentioned is readily available at sports shops such as Sportsman’s Warehouse (032 586 1000). If you want a more specialised store, try Trappers Trading at Lifestyle Centre (032 586 3570) or the Salomon store, Gateway (031 584 7127). unprecedented growth here. A surging demand for water, fibre and electricity has created a kind of gold rush of activity around our aging infrastructure. Cables are damaged constantly by sub-contractors digging to install new lines. Often trenches are filled in and closed up to avoid having to pay for the repairs and when this damage results in infrastructural failure it becomes a nightmare to locate and repair it. Street lights are another issue entirely. The ongoing drama around tenders and the appointing of contractors to address the current situation has resulted in an almost impossible scenario. To call the situation unsatisfactory would be an epic understatement. And then, there’s the pressing matter of the proposed sale of 4000 square metres of our park to a developer in a clandestine deal of questionable integrity. That matter was hardly touched on because there was no new information available to the gathering. But Deon Viljoen, the newly elected Chairman of the board of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, DOCRRA, is confident that they can work out a strategy with the municipality that will deliver more positive results. He was at the meeting and made a lot of sense in his discussion with the ward councillors around service delivery going forward. I would suggest that it is now mandatory for everyone who has an interest in Brand Ballito to join DOCRRA to give them the support they need. I don’t wish to sound alarmist but we are at the tipping point now and if you believe that your investment here is secured by the leafy barriers and the posh gatehouse security features that help you sleep a little more soundly, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. this week we tried...
As much as we’re health conscious in the Life & Style offices (even our coffee orders can get complicated), we’re not averse to treating ourselves. This month we had a yen for a good ol’ fashioned roadhouse burger from Flagz Road Grill and Take-Away, and all we want to do is go back for more.
M
OST of us will have some nostalgia about the corner café where you used to buy slap chips and a juicy hamburger on a Saturday afternoon. (Our ed’s was Jimmy’s Café in Mthatha, with red linoleoum floors, and vinegar strong enough to strip paint.)
Flagz Road Grill and Take-Away in Ballito is a throwback to our corner café memories, and is now under new ownership with Jacobus and Nishka Slabbert at the helm. Both come from the hospitality industry; Jacobus is a qualified lodge manager and guide, while Nishka has a diploma in professional cookery and hotel management. They met six years ago in Botswana and got married three years ago. “With the money we saved from working in Botswana we bought Flagz and took over in April,” says Nishka. Their burgers are made to order and consist of a 200g beef patty, freshly baked jumbo buns and are loaded with a tomato,

onion and gherkin relish, making the burgers juicy and succulent. They are value for money sizewise, and chips must be ordered separately. Choose from a plain burger, cheese burger, cheese and jalapeno, cheese and bacon, Dagwood, pineapple and cheese, avocado and cheese all with the option of beef patty, chicken fillet or falafel. The menu is varied, with wood-fired pizzas, mutton curry, fish and chips, wraps, shwarmas, milkshakes (of the old-fashioned double-thick variety), coffees and more. “The style of food is typical of an old-style corner café,” explains Nishka, but they do also have healthy options such as their chicken fillet burger, falafel shwarma, Greek salad and grilled fish.
Finally, the North Coast has its own poké bar! But Pangeli is more than that, and owner operator Sean Toubkin has a sound philosophy behind this brand-new clean eating destination in Salt Rock.
FTER 35 odd years as a globetrotting hotelier and chef, Sean’s lifestyle changed a few years ago to adopt a vegan way of life. He’s a walking tribute to fresh, healthy and sustainable eating.
Many will remember Sean as the founder of the original US-style cocktail lounge, East Oasis, where his burgers were legendary. His new concept store, Pangeli Poké Bar, is enticing locals with its fusion of Hawaiian and Japanese cuisines. “This is not a takeaway,” he adds, “it’s a movement,” and the overriding sense is that Pangeli hopes to connect us to our food, nourish our bodies with ‘medicinal’ dishes, and to have some fun. “The untapped flavour combinations of poké (pronounced poh-keh, a traditional, delicate Hawaiian dish meaning, ‘to cut’) satisfies our appetite for culinary creativity,” explains Sean. There is some casual seating in the beautifully decorated space, with its subtle ocean accents of coral-shaped lighting and teal walls, broken by molten
copper countertops. There is almost an oceanic ebb and flow to the cosy destination, as customers drift in and out. Pangeli source an abundance of local South African, Hawaiian, Japanese and Oriental produce and turn them into amazing poké creations, while all the pickling and curing processes happen on site. Think a plethora of exotic mushrooms, fennel and zesty orange, delicious umami seaweed combinations, with plenty of familiar flavours to add to your meal, from pickled red onion, salmon sashimi, or lemon wasabi mayo prawns all adorning a bed of sticky sushi rice, with fresh greens, quinoa or noodles as other options. The menu includes innovative tacos (using crispy tempura battered sheets of nori seaweed) and ‘donuts’, a delight for the senses with a soya sauce pipette (just in case you had any doubts about the fun part). You can also design your own poké.

APERITIVO HOUR We just love LUPA’s Aperol Spritz. Commonly served as an aperitif in Northeast Italy, it’s a favourite on LUPA’s cocktail menu. Bright orange in colour, with a combination of sweet Aperol liqueur, Schweppes Soda and Prosecco, it’s light and refreshing with a bitter-sweet after taste.
FIRST COME FIRST SERVED It is a skill treasured by drinkers and passed down the generations, requiring nimble footwork, subtle eye contact and the occasional well-timed shove. But these tactics for getting served first at the bar could be consigned to history if a London establishment’s trial of facial recognition scanners is a success. The software, more commonly used by police and airport security, has been deployed at a cocktail bar, called 5cc Harrild & Sons, to ensure customers are served fairly. Internet-connected webcams equipped with face scanners keeps tabs on new arrivals, with each customer assigned a number flashed onto a screen telling the bartender who is next.

1. WILD MUSHROOM RISOTTO Cederberg Ghost Corner Pinot Noir 2016, R215 A beautifully crafted Pinot noir with prominent red fruit of ripe cherries and sweet raspberries with an undertone of earthy, mushroom nuances. A silky palate with berries and delicate oak components following through. 2. ASPARAGUS AND GOAT’S CHEESE TART Shannon Sanctuary Peak Sauvignon Blanc 2018, R105 Primary fruit aromas of asparagus, citrus and some capsicum in a minerally and flinty style. 3.LINGUINI WITH MARINATED LEMONS AND CHILLI PRAWNS Anthonij Rupert Terra Del Capo Pinot Grigio 2019, R65 Expressive nectarine, elderflower and gentle citrus nose; hint of melon too. Lively, fresh and bright palate, which expresses that lemony tang balanced by succulent stone fruit and nectarine. Crisp and refreshing, the body is light and perky with good acidity balancing the fruit notes. Call Simbithi Country Club on 032 946 5403.

INVERROCHE GIN, founded by Lorna Scott, has become one of the most popular handcrafted gins in South Africa, and has just been snapped up by luxury liquor brand Pernod Ricard. When Scott launched Inverroche in Still Bay, with her son Rohan and daughter Lauren, she had no experience in distilleries or the liquor industry. In 2011 they launched a few bottles of three handcrafted gins – Classic, infused with limestone fynbos; Verdant, infused with mountainous fynbos; and Amber, infused with coastal fynbos. “I am thrilled to partner with Pernod Ricard,” said Scott. “The group’s vast distribution network will enable Inverroche Gins to reach new consumers.” Her dedication to sustainability has contributed to a successful eco-friendly business where 70 percent of the staff complement is women employed from the local community and the entire gin-making process, from distillation to bottle, is symbiotic with the environment. Scott will remain as chief operating officer and maintain a shareholding in the business.
