Y family are all major foodies – my grandmother on my mother’s side lovingly cooked and baked her entire adult life for her five children, and to this day we all still make her recipes to celebrate special occasions.

Her easy one-dish cheese soufflé (served with a crispy green salad and splashes of Tabasco) is a summer holiday staple, while her cheesecake was so famous among our family friends that my uncle’s best friend wrote a lengthy ode to it, complete with rhyming couplets! ITH the busy festive season quickly approaching, many of us find ourselves in a frenzy of preparation. It is important to remember that this exciting time is also when burglaries and break-ins peak.

Having a home security system is an effective defence, however additional precautionary methods are always encouraged to provide protection. Follow these basic steps to ensure that this year’s holiday season is a joyous and safe one for you and your loved ones: 1. Secure all doors and windows. Keep all doors and windows closed and locked. For sliding glass doors, place a piece of plywood on the track to prevent access. 2. Don’t keep valuable possessions in places with high visibility. This only attracts burglars to your home. 3. Light up your house. Use exterior lighting and motion sensors. The extra lighting will make it more difficult for burglars to intrude without being seen. 4. Clear all entrances. Keep all shrubs and plants trimmed away from entrances. Although they may be pretty, they serve as a hiding place. 5. Use your alarm. Make sure your alarm system is properly installed and programmed. Also, make sure the security system warning sign is visible. Studies show burglars are less likely to break into a home with a security system. 6. Stop the mail and newspapers. Nothing screams ‘you’re gone’ like a pile of mail and newspapers outside of your house. Have the mail and newspapers stopped while you are gone so people don’t know you’re out of town. 7. Let there be light. Darkness on the inside suggests a house is not occupied. Use timers to light parts of your house while you are gone to give the appearance that someone is there.

8. Notify the neighbours. Letting

your neighbours know when you will be gone will give your house extra protection and allow them to report anything suspicious.

We love a homegrown success story, and it doesn’t get more feel-good than Kelly and Lane Allan of Macsharp Timbers, partners in both life and business. To think it all started with a jolly jumper and the coy exchange of a single bar of chocolate.

It was 2001, and Lane, already a professional cabinet maker operating in the area, had popped into her place of work to install a jolly jumper for the little ones. Kelly then dropped off a chocolate at his work as a ‘thank you’ (quite possibly with a glint in her eye), and three months later they were engaged. Their marriage followed a year after that.

The couple are now the proud parents of two boys, aged 15 and 12, but only one seems to prefer tinkering with the toolbox in the garage, just like dad. Kelly, also a creative at heart, had pursued her studies in interior design while still working at the créche, so a career in décor wasn’t that far off track for her. When the opportunity arose to acquire Macsharp Timbers, an existing entity established in 1984, it made perfect sense for the couple with Lane’s

PR guru and woman-about-town Glenda Thompson has her finger on the pulse of the North Coast social scene. Here’s what’s been happening in our neck of the woods. SHARING THEIR STORIES The 2019 annual fundraiser for the Umhlanga Women Achievers, that many of our local businesswomen belong to, was a fantastic success. Money raised at the event went to the Open Door Crisis Centre, an incredible organisation that was founded by the amazing Thora Mansfield in 1997 to help abused women and vulnerable children and to help put a stop to human trafficking in South Africa. Speakers at the event included Thora, Keri Miller from ECR and an old Ballito resident and now a mover and shaker in the KZN community, Wendy Richards, who was launching her autobiography, “Her Mother’s Betrayal,” her heart-breaking story of abandonment and abuse. She is proof that there is life after heart break, and spends time motivating and inspiring people to climb out of their own personal pain. Sue Davidson, Thora Mansfield &

We whipped around Ballito on the 24th, checking out the outfits on display and my first prize went to these two lovely Zulu ladies from Leather Gallery, Nomzamo Zulu and Sphumelele Mzoneli who decided to show support and showcase the traditional gear from the Indian and Venda cultures. SALSA REVISITED Loved a recent visit to Salsa who are under new management! The food and the vibe were right on track and took me back to a wonderful time spent in South America a while ago. We need to support these awesome local restaurants during the off season. They all deserve a good healthy boost to keep them growing and thriving!

CULTURE AT ASHTON As the sport and sport facilities have grown and flourished at Ashton, the cultural aspect of school life has made a tremendous impact this year too.

TUDENTS have shone in every sphere of music, dance, dramatic arts and art. Special mention must be made of the students who have excelled. Tasmika Nurbadh received an invitation to perform at the International ARTS Convention in the USA. Where she had the opportunity to display her acting abilities to industry professionals such as Disney, Sony and Nickelodeon. Caitlynn Fomison competed in the World Lyrical Dance Federation Championships placing 7th in Lyrical U16 solo as well as the Jazz Solo. She also had the opportunity to dance on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir performed at Ashton, and these very talented boys thrilled the audience with their vibrant concert. The Ashton Choirs then joined the ‘Drakkies’ for a mass choir event – choreographed by the conductor of the Drakensberg Boys Choir, Bernard Kruger. The Cultural Showcase featured the winners of a variety of categories in the disciplines of art, dance, drama and music. The highlight was the Cultural Tour, performing at Umhlali Preparatory, Westbrook Retirement Village, Galleria Mall and finally for the Ashton Intersen Phase. Once again the Rotary Choir Festival, which has become an annual event anticipated by many at Ashton and the surrounding school, was a great success. This year, more choirs took to the stage

and performed to a capacity Grace Hall. The evening ended with over 450 students on stage participating in the two mass choir items. This community fundraising initiative for Rotary was once again very successful and the proceeds of the evening is used by Rotary to import medical equipment for the disabled. The best way to learn is to visit cultural events beyond the Dolphin Coast borders. The Form 2 Subject Drama class enjoyed the One Spirit Performance at the iZulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino. The Form 4 Art, Drama and Music students enjoyed a cultural day out at the Hilton Arts’ Festival. Also performing at the Ballito Junction Schools Expo were Rufaro, Aeryn, Keaton, Simone and the small string ensemble. The Ashton Ten Year Celebration by the Intersen Phase students highlighted the depth and enormous talent being nurtured and encouraged at Ashton. Every student participated in the performance of the evening, and the colour, variety and musical and dance abilities left the audience in awe. The Foundation Phase are looking forward to their colourful performance ‘Whisked Away’ which will be held in the Grace Hall. Kwadukuza beach manager ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honneysett asks, “where are our whales?” after a disappointing season of whale watching.

HAT has changed the migration route of our whales this year along the KZN North Coast?

I had even prepared a space for them on my morning radio slot on 88FM, Radio Life & Style, with the intention of reporting the best sightings to the listeners so that their show could be enjoyed by everyone but this year, for reasons unknown to us, they skipped the North Coast of KZN. I recall last year sitting on the hill top at Sheffield Beach with binoculars in hand observing up to 20 animals frolicking out in the ocean all across the coastline. It was a magnificent sight, with some breaching and some lifting their tails high out of the water as they communicated with each other. It was truly a sight to see. This year as normal we prepared ourselves for the season by getting our boats ready, just in case one was to get caught up in a shark net. We work closely with the KZN Sharks Board assisting them if required to cut a whale loose from a net, which happens from time to time even with whale pinging devices attached to all the net installations. Early August we expect to see the first arrivals that then increase as the month progresses but this year a few arrived close inshore and then all went quiet, which is when we started investigating. Local ski boat fishermen who were some distance offshore reported many sightings, but all were moving south and not inshore as normal. So what is it that has changed their migration pattern coming in from the southern Arctic to the northern shores of

KZN, then moving south into the Cape waters before their long swim back to the Arctic? The greatest shoal on earth passes the KZN coast in June and July and with it follows every size fish and fish species all hoping to get their share of the bounty, but this year we had sightings of killer whales – or orcas as they are commonly referred to – in our warm waters, which is rare. So did this deter the whales from hanging out along our coast line, or could it have been the methods used by the oil companies to test the ocean floor for oil wells in the northern KZN waters that has kept them away? If it was the presence of orcas, then I am sure whales will stay clear, especially if they intend to calve as a baby whale will not stand a chance against a pack of orcas. The equipment that is used to search for oil deposits under the sea floor (I am told) interferes with the whale’s navigation system so I am sure that could be a reason for them moving on. Whatever the reason, it has resulted in a quiet whale season with a few rare sightings and, for me, nothing to report about on the radio. Hermanus has had its usual whale festivities and the Eastern Cape has been alive with activity so let’s hope that there has been no permanent damage caused and they return next year. I can’t help thinking if the same thing is happening to other species like the turtles. Time will tell. Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf & Weather Report on 88FM Ballito.

ANY people in these parts have a big snake story to tell. One of our advertisers, Hanno Schubel recently went viral on social media with a video of an encounter with a huge python on a trip to Mozambique. Dr Rosie Carey, our resident medical expert on 88FM came across a seriously big python on a Holla Trails ride earlier this year and my dear friend Alec Mackay and his lovely wife Silvia actually lost one of their Beagles to a python in Seaward Estate.

Still, a snake always gets a reaction and while most of the team was really cool with it, one of our number was deeply fearful and would have no doubt preferred for the creature to be instantly executed rather than being encouraged to proceed in peace into the surrounding shrubbery. Her reaction is sadly not uncommon. Ignorance and superstition triggers fear. But these creatures really deserve to be protected. They play a vital role in the natural ecosystem that we are so expertly busy destroying. Our visitor, as it transpires, was a Natal Green Snake and if you are resident in these parts, you will probably encounter one sooner or later. So, I thought you might like to know a little more about them and their close relative, the Spotted Bush Snake, also found here. Both snakes look alike but the Natal Green lacks the black speckled markings of the Bush Snake. This often causes people to mistake them for juvenile Green

I was rescued by my friend, David Rattray. We had some marvellous snake stories to tell, like the tale of the gigantic Black Necked Spitting Cobra that we captured as kids on a school camp at Rustenburg Kloof and kept in our tent until we brought it back to school in the bus where the headmaster and his cohorts were waiting for us! Now, that was a snake… On our last fishing trip together before his untimely passing, we came upon a pair of Black Mambas in midengagement on a very remote stretch of the mighty Umzinyathi River. They were bigger than any mamba either of us had ever seen and clearly upset at having been disturbed in their intimacy. They came at us and then disappeared into the dense riverine bush that we had to make our way through to escape. Those were snakes… The thin green visitor that visited us at the L&S HQ last week was not even vaguely in the same league.

Mambas but these are much longer and thicker and seldom encountered beyond the coastal forest. Like the Spotted Bush Snake, the Natal Green loves feeding on geckos which is why you sometimes find them inside homes looking for their favourite food. Neither of these snakes has fangs or venom so they are harmless to people and pets. They do have quite a few sharp little teeth though, so it’s not a great idea to try to handle them. People are generally afraid of snakes. Snakes have had really bad press over the ages. But they keep things in balance in the natural order and where there is balance, there is harmony. Please don’t kill them.

When we were living in the bush in Northern KZN on the Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve, I was trapped in the gloom of a windowless traditional Zulu beehive style hut when an angry injured python came between me and the very low doorway. Every move I made towards freedom was met by a warning hiss and a lunging strike and I think I aged visibly in what seemed like an eternity before

AUBERGINE ROLLS “Our aubergine rolls can be served as a side to a meal or as a snack or canapé at a party. They are beautiful to look at and the indulgent sun-dried tomato cream cheese with the fresh bursts of the little pomegranate rubies is a winning combination … even if we say so ourselves!”

Makes 20 to 24 rolls 2 tubs (230g each) plain cream cheese 80g sun-dried tomatoes Salt and black pepper 2 large aubergines, mandolined or thinly sliced lengthways (we find we get 10 to 12 good slices out of a large aubergine) Rubies of 1 fresh pomegranate 30g fresh basil 1 tub (125g) shop-bought or homemade basil pesto

Make the pesto first if you’re going the homemade route. Blitz the basil, garlic, olive oil and almonds together and then stir in the Parmesan. Stir in the lemon juice, season to taste, then set aside. In a blender, pulse the cream cheese and sun-dried tomatoes together with some salt and pepper until well combined. Pop this mixture into a bowl and into the fridge. Pan-fry the thinly sliced Homemade basil pesto aubergines until golden, but 125g fresh basil not too crisp as you’ll need 2 cloves garlic them to be easy to roll. 200ml (¾cup) extra-virgin Place one heaped olive oil teaspoon of sun-dried 125ml (½ cup) roasted tomato cream cheese onto almonds one end of each golden 125ml (½ cup) grated pan-fried aubergine slice. A MUSICAL MIND Shomon Daniel is a lovely anomaly. She’s a bohemian at heart, a musician and a composer, studied opera in South Korea and spent a year at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Foregoing the allure of big record label deals, she’s returned to teaching in Ballito. Life & Style sat down with her to chat about her life and loves.

hen we first called to schedule an interview with musician Shomon Daniel, she answered the phone rather breathlessly, excusing the chaos in the background by explaining she’s busy hoisting her electric piano into the back of a truck to transport to the Drakensburg. She was heading to the White Mountain Festival, an annual acoustic gathering of musicians where she’s performed several times before. This time, she hopped on stage as the guest of another artist.

She’s found the balance these days between performances, teaching, song writing, and shooting the breeze at her home in Mount Moreland. She split her childhood between the majesty of the Garden Route, and the Dolphin Coast, where she’s now settled

down to commit to her teaching. Five years ago, teaching took its toll on her when she began to lose her voice. She took a sabbatical and cruised Australia in a van, spending her time between underground poetry recitals, art exhibitions and performances; exploring a magical mosaic of art and culture. Music for her is multi-faceted; “it’s healing, powerful, soulful,” explains Shomon. “I always believed that I could reach the most people from the stage, but I’ve realised that with teaching I can reach someone on an entirely different level.” Her grandfather bought her her first piano at three years old, and she’s been writing songs since she was five. In addition, Shomon plays guitar, the ukulele, percussion, and of course, her voice is a major part of her repertoire. Shomon spent two years in

Regular exercise (usually recognised as just 150-minutes of moderate intensity or 75-minutes of high intensity activity per week) can decrease your risk of heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke. I have had patients who have stopped their chronic blood pressure medication by following a consistent exercise regime. It’s incredibly empowering to realise that by choosing to exercise you can not only prevent cardiovascular disease, but actually reverse it. No matter how unfit you are, it is never too late to start.

2) Exercising decreases your risk of type 2 diabetes Exercising makes you more sensitive to insulin, which is exactly what one of the mainstay medications for diabetes does. With regular exercise, your body tissue becomes more sensitive to the effects of insulin, which means that you need less insulin to get sugar from your blood stream (where it’s causing

This effect is independent of the weight loss effect of exercising, which means that even if you aren’t losing weight while exercising, you are still getting the benefit of blood sugar control. It makes it far easier to get up and exercise on a cold morning if you know that by exercising you are choosing to prevent diabetes. 3) Exercise improves your mood Physical activity has been proven in some studies to be as effective as anti-depressants in managing mild to moderate depression. A strenuous exercise session causes the release of endogenous endorphins (molecules that are similar to morphine molecules, but obviously without the negative effects) giving you a natural high. Exercise, independent of how vigorous it is, has been shown to produce changes

in parts of the brain associated with regulation of depression and anxiety as well as increasing sensitivity to the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. Endorphins can also have an analgesic effect which can be beneficial in certain chronic pain conditions - it’s difficult to motivate yourself to go and exercise when you are in chronic pain, but ironically that might be the best thing for you. 4) Exercise can improve your energy levels Once again, this does sound rather counter-intuitive. If you’re exhausted, it’s understandable that the last thing you want to do is go and exercise, but just 20 minutes of brisk exercise can increase your energy levels. Exercising increases blood flow and hence oxygen delivery to your muscles and your brain, effectively ‘waking you up’. Longer term, regular exercise increases your muscle strength and endurance meaning that your busy day is less likely to leave you feeling exhausted. Regular exercise can also improve your quality of sleep and we all know that you are more likely to face the day invigorated after a good night’s sleep (just make sure you don’t exercise too close to bedtime because that can release adrenaline and keep you awake). 5) Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life Men who exercise regularly have been shown to be less likely to have erectile dysfunction than their couch-

potato counterparts, most likely due to better cardiovascular health and healthier endothelial function. Likewise, there is evidence to show that women who exercise frequently, experience enhanced arousal. On a psychological level, exercising leaves you feeling more confident about your body, which has a positive effect on libido. 6) Bone health As you age, your bone density starts to decrease putting you at increased risk for fractures. Weight-bearing exercise stresses the bones in a positive way leading to improved bone density. Weight-bearing exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent or delay the onset of osteoporosis. Too often, exercise is seen as some sort of punishment or as a means of assuaging guilt after eating or drinking too much. Seeing exercise through that paradigm doesn’t leave much scope for enjoyment. It’s far better to focus on the positives. Imagine the effects that exercise can have on your health now and in the future and use that to motivate yourself. Even five minutes of exercise is better than nothing, and no matter how unfit you are, you will benefit from incorporating more activity into your lifestyle. Remember that if you have serious health issues, you should get the all-clear from your doctor before you start on an exercise program. STON MARTIN has revealed ‘the beating heart’ of its first new DBX sports utility vehicle designed with the female driver in mind.

The British luxury car-maker has confirmed that the new DBX will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine – developing 550 horse-power equivalent to five Ford Fiestas – making it the highest performing V8 engine in current Aston Martin range with appeal to both Jane and James Bond and their off-spring. Pre-production models of the DBX started rolling out from the firm’s second factory at St Athan near Cardiff in Wales in June, and lightly disguised versions have been seen on test on roads at home and abroad. It is expected to be priced between R2 700 000 and R2 900,000 and to become the company’s biggest seller with around 5 000 sales a year by 2021 with the UK, USA and China among the key markets. There has also been strong niche interest from South Africa. Aston Martin bosses have been clear they are targeting wealthy female customers as key buyers of the new SUV including adding details as a slot to keep their handbags when driving.
