BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

FROM THE EDITOR

W

HAT a weekend it has been. It has taken me the whole of Sunday to recover from the Rugby World Cup final on Saturday. I don’t think that a game of rugby has ever meant so much to a nation reeling as we are under the weight of the disasters that we are facing right now.

Part of the burden, like the debilitating drought in the country, is what some might refer to as an act of God, but mostly it is entirely man-made and the men (and women) responsible, are still very much in circulation. What we need is a superhero or two to swoop in and start cleaning up the mess…Biff, Bang, Wallop, Kapow! Okay, so the Marvel gang may be just wishful thinking, but we were treated to eighty minutes of real superhero action on Saturday. “If there has been a theme of the World Cup, a lesson for us all to take from these long When you seven weeks, see our nation it is this: coming together the game in celebration of a sometimes sporting victory like runs on strange and this you realise that powerful we have much more currents. in common than It is not those mealy mouthed, necessarily mischief spewing the sharpest, smartest, politically divisive fittest, cretins among us fastest or understand. strongest

team that wins, but the one who wants it most. Listening to South Africa’s captain, Siya Kolisi, and coach, Rassie Erasmus, talk about what this victory meant in the minutes after they had won it, you began to understand exactly what England were up against and the way the Springboks were thinking about it, England had lost the match before it even began.” – Andy Bull / The Guardian When you see our

nation coming together in celebration of a sporting victory like this you realise that we have much more in common than those mealy mouthed, mischief spewing politically divisive cretins among us understand. How wonderful to be a proud South African again. We watched the match at the Market at the Lifestyle Centre and the atmosphere was electric. This has got to be one of the best lifestyle themed commercial centres of its kind in the country and we are thrilled to be associated with it. Radio Life & Style has its broadcast studio in the heart of the Lifestyle Centre, just next to the Mica Nursery. It was from the studio that I spied the most awesome Bonsai tree tucked away in a corner of the nursery a while ago and was curiously drawn

to it. It looked like a piece of living driftwood, ancient and gnarled, half dead in part but with green shoots indicating a strong life force within. I bought that tree after Saturday’s match. It reminds me of our beloved country and how resilient we are. And we are staying. This is our country and we are here to make a difference by highlighting what deserves to be recognised around us. Life & Style is proud to bring you the good news, the health and wellness, the potential, the fun, the joy, the beauty, the entrepreneurship…the best of life and style in the region that we love and that we are proud to call home. And we are delighted to share it with you. Together we are formidable. Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika!

someone, not on what separates you. • Express love by listening. • Open yourself to all the support that is around you and in you. • Every minute counts. • Look beyond the obvious. • Stop negativity in its tracks – take a deep breath and clear your mind.

HERE has been a huge increase in poaching on our shoreline – mussels, crayfish, octopus, and shad. Even sea urchins and sea cucumbers are being decimated by those who can’t resist the notion of taking something for nothing just because they can.

With the removal of KZN Wildlife officers from the scene, you can play a vital part in protecting these creatures by calling the National Environmental Hotline 0800 205 005. You can remain anonymous and statistics will be gathered to prove that the Dolphin Coast is under pressure from people who are taking advantage of the fact we have no visible Monitoring and Compliance people now that the Authorities, in their wisdom, have taken that role away from Ezemvelo.

Harcourts Dolphin Coast’s Jean-Pierre Pienaar offers some expert offers advice on the value of sole mandate in the current property climate. “My house has been on the market for 3 months with no offers and it’s listed with all the local agents. No one is buying because of the state of our nation.”

I

’m sure we are all familiar with the sound of these words over the past months or more. The Ballito market however is still doing well and remains one of the only growth areas in the country, there are massive amounts of money been invested into the prestigious estates being developed in and around Ballito.

So, with all this new development and families moving to Ballito every

of the most damaging things that a homeowner can do to their property when wanting to sell is to lists their property with an agent that values their house the highest. Your property must be valued according to the current market trends as per one of my past articles I wrote covering this. The choice between a sole or open mandate is the next question and attributes to the price you get on your home and how long it will take to sell. A sole mandate allows us to work your property through the Harcourts service promise, making us accountable to

month why are there still so many properties that have remained unsold? Harcourts Dolphin Coast has had a great past few months with sales, we have sold our exclusive mandated properties in record times and for between 90 and 98% of asking prices. There’s no risk of losing the sale to a faster agent, which means the focus can change from quantity to quality, as a higher offer is in the best interests of both the agent and the seller in a sole mandate situation An open mandate does not let the buyers compete on the sale of your home but rather the agents, this will never bring you the highest selling price and will only cause damage to

‘TIS THE SEASON

The Glamour of Christmas Vegmo Accessories has Christmas all wrapped up for you.

V

EGMO ACCESSORIES is renowned for exceptional Christmas décor and accessories. Over the years we’ve seen all the new styles, trends and ideas on display in their store. This year is no exception.

Metallics are trending this Christmas and Vegmo Accessories is showing us how to incorporate them in a big way this festive season. If you want to keep to the traditional look, you can add touches of warm gold or sparkling silver to your trees, wreaths or table décor. Alternatively you can follow the exciting black and white trend blended with your choice of metallic. A wonderful tip is to brighten up any nook with cheery and glittering lights in the form of battery operated candles, with life like glow and fairly lights that can be put inside jars and bottles or interwoven around your other table décor including mini trees and garlands. For a truly modern look, their light up white and champagne twig trees make an elegant statement in any home or office. They haven’t forgotten the Christmas meal this year and with all their stunning festive décor they have added exceptionally beautiful crockery, glassware and cutlery to the seasonal table. Glass charger plates with hints of metallic to matt black plates and accompanying cutlery in exciting shiny black, matt and shiny gold and copper to create a festive meal to remember. There is also a range of black and gold or white and silver glasses to add a really sophisticated touch to your celebratory beverage!

To add a scintillating sparkle to your Christmas this festive season visit Vegmo Accessories at 20 Anthurium Place, Springfield Park (off Inanda road) or contact them on 031 574 7500. You can also look at their Facebook www.facebook.com/VegmoAccessories or Instagram www.instagram.com/vegmoaccessories pages.

Décor and DIY expert Allen Petrie, owner of GreenHaus in Salt Rock City, offers a special perspective on the forthcoming festive season

S

OME find Christmas and the consequent Christmas Shopping that consumes our lives in the run up to the Big Day really stressful. There’s no telling what people really want, where to get it and how to do it all when you’re trying to spread your budget across as many family members and friends as possible. There are almost no original or unique ideas left. Gifting fads come and go. (Remember fidget spinners?)

When asked, most people treat Christmas like shopping for dinner. Until about an hour before, very few people know what they’re going to have for dinner. It’s a grudge purchase, a “have to buy”. A chore. But let’s park the anxiety over Christmas, reframe our mind-set and remember what it’s really all about. It’s about spending valuable time with the ones you love most. The new PlayStation might be okay, but it’s hardly a way to spend time with your family. The trick is to find fun ways to make memories together in an environment that is predisposed to the notion that we are more important to each other than the gifts are. SET THE SCENE Begin by evaluating your space and seeing if there are “zones’ in your home that need to be temporarily opened up so that the invisible barriers are down. During the year, it’s okay to have a workspace, a play space and other purpose-built spaces. It helps to keep things organised. But it’s holiday time now. Make your spaces more integrated. Move the furniture to make living spaces more open and relaxed. You’ll find that pulling a couch or hammock into the garden to read a book every bit as relaxing as going on a vacation – and it’s free. GIVE EXPERIENCES, NOT THINGS Doing things together, whether you’re a couple or a family, is the stuff that memories are made of. Plan to do things that involve the whole family. Build something together. Start by making your own Christmas tree out of recycled or repurposed items. Get everyone involved and you’ll find that your homemade tree will be special to your whole family. HAVE GIFTING THEMES TO MAKE IT MORE FUN Challenge yourselves to stick to a theme like “gifts made from recycled items only” or “gifts for under R100” or even “gifts that you can’t see”. A “voucher” for an hour of your time or a favour isn’t something you can see but it means a lot to the person who

receives it. THINK PAST CHRISTMAS DAY Think long term. Try for a gift that lasts well into the New Year. Making games to play with your family are a great way to keep spending valuable time together. Get involved in classes or courses together and use the knowledge you gain to improve your space, make gifts or just learn a new skill. DO SOMETHING FOR OTHERS WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE Make a decision to spend at least some of your budget on others. Donate to a charity over the Christmas period or get involved with a cause that helps others. If everyone spent a little less on disposable gifts and a little more on really worthy causes, the change in the community you live in would be truly incredible. BUY LOCAL If you have to go on a shopping spree, support local businesses. When you do, you pay someone’s school fees. When you support large corporations, you simply enrich faceless shareholders. Christmas brings the same opportunities each year. It also, potentially brings with it the problems we create for ourselves by putting undue pressure on each other to come up with the perfect gift. The only two perfect gifts are love and time. Both of which cost nothing.

GOING OFF-GRID - What This Means James Seidle from Ample Power discusses some electrifying options to keep the lights on. FOR THE HOME Are you concerned about escalating Electricity costs or incorrect Billing? Are you fed up with inconvenient (costly) power outages? Have you heard the Buzzword OFFGRID and want to know more? Read on…

STEP 1: Start with implementing the

following basics: •Using energy efficient appliances Fridges/Washing Machines (A+++ Rated) etc •Using energy efficient Lighting (LED Bulbs, Energy savers etc) •Using Gas for cooking and domestic heating •Using Solar Hot Water systems and/ or Heatpumps •Using energy efficient well insulated geysers Changing the above can reduce your Electricity bill dramatically and up to 70% in some cases, and therefore reduce your Solar System capital costs by up to 70% too!

Complex living on the next level

S

ITUATED on the northern edge of the greater Ballito footprint, Sheffield Manor offers buyers fabulous investment potential. The complex comprises 321 units offering 1, 2 and 3 bed options.

Most of us cannot do True off grid, or at least not yet. So where to start… The correct approach is to reduce your power requirements so you spend less on Solar and battery storage.

SHEFFIELD MANOR

STEP 2: The next step is to then to

look at a quality Solar Photovoltaic (PV electricity) system with or without storage. Some pointers are as follows: • You need to have some recent consumption history to help size your Solar PV system correctly. • Preferably you have your own DIY portable “Efergy”meter or similar, that tells you how much power you use every minute, hour, day, week. Otherwise we may need to meter your house for a week or two. • You also need the proper advice from a Solar expert and not just a salesman who wants to sell you his box of tricks that he knows. Someone with at least 5 years solid Solar experience in designing home systems. You are spending good money which needs to last +25 years, so do it properly.

There are currently 11 units available from the developers stock for purchase. These are a mix of 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartments and 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartments. SHAN FOURIE –

Winning Friends and Influencing People Dave Charles meets Ballito’s most successful content creator

H It’s all in the Planning Kwadukuza beach manager ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honeysett is busy with pre-season strategy for the holidays

A

S I sit down to write another article I am marvelling at how the year has flown and as we celebrate Spring I am starting to prepare for the busy holiday ahead.

So what you might ask does this entail? Well, no holiday season goes unplanned and at this time of the year there are items of equipment that need to be ordered and lifeguards that need to be certified as competent. They have to undergo a number of tests prior to the holiday season. There are also a number of planning meetings for all sorts of festive events, from entertainment to fishing competitions. Then comes the planning meetings for all the emergency and law enforcement teams that are out there to ensure that the season runs with minimal incident. To keep everyone as safe as possible, we work hand in hand with a number of private services as well as government bodies, all of which work together in times of emergency. Law enforcement is the shared responsibility of the SAPS, Kwadukuza Municipality and private security companies. For marine related incidents, the NSRI station 41, IPSS Medical Rescue and KwaDukuza Marine Safety all team up to handle what comes our way. Then there is the KwaDukuza Fire and Rescue service, Netcare 911 and IPSS Medical Rescue that handle most medical related issues. Cleaning and maintenance is the domain of Parks and Gardens, Waste

Management, Electricity, Civil, Roads and the UIP, all of which take care of our beaches and town. You can expect to see the lifeguards kitted out with new uniforms and new equipment and with the extra lifeguards that the municipality employs for the season, hours will be extended covering the beaches from 06h00 to 18h00 daily from mid-November (Matric Rage) until the schools return around mid-January 2020. All this service provision and equipment requisitioning needs to follow the municipal process of approval and Supply Chain management which, as we all know, is fairly onerous. So, like the builders who are working flat out to finish projects in time before the year end, we are working hard with the manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that all of the equipment is ready to go out onto all of the beaches in our footprint. For me it’s back and forth to Ethekweni to chase up and collect orders for repairs and maintenance as well as to collect new gear that will be needed just for our area from Ballito to Zinkwazi. Once we have everything ready we then will go out to the public via the local media networks to publicize all information so that you can know who to contact in an emergency. In my next article I hope to give you some do’s and don’t’s to help you survive the summer out on our beaches! Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf & Weather Report on 88FM Ballito.

OW would you like to earn a living by testing new products, wearing new clothes and shoes, visiting exciting places, driving new cars, testing new cosmetics and generally living the good life? If it does, you might want to consider a career as an Influencer.

This is the lifestyle of Ballito’s Shan Fourie, and, by all accounts, she loves it. I was fascinated to learn how anyone could possibly generate enough social traction to actually influence others sufficiently for the activity to be monetised. If you are battling, the question is, why would anyone give anyone free stuff and actually pay them to try it? How could this possibly

generate enough sales or interest in your product to make the exchange viable? Interested? Read on. We had arranged to meet for coffee so that I could find out more about her intriguing home industry and in a room full of strangers she was easy to spot. Shan has what some might describe as a kind of aura about her. Immaculately groomed and perfectly poised, she makes quite a statement in a crowd. So far, so good, but I was concerned that this was going to be a difficult conversation. After all, you can’t possibly have it all, can you? Well, it would seem that you can if you are Shan Fourie, and this is probably why she does so well at influencing people. She is instantly likeable and, without being overbearing, she projects an air of

intelligent authority that you can trust. If she had gone into politics she would probably have been a strong contender for the presidency! So, with several thousand people following what she posts on social media, it would appear that what Shan says makes quite an impact. If she likes your product or service, she says so. Her followers then take that as a strong cue to go out and get it and that’s why she’s worth engaging. Obviously there’s more to it than the old Dire Straits money for nothing racket – there are reports to compile, pitches to make, things to do and places to go – it’s not all moonlight and roses but it beats working for a living! Man, when I grow up, I want to be an Influencer.

McCarthy Toyota Ballito is fully accredited to supply and service the GR Supra. It’s one of the most exciting vehicles on the road. Read what motoring journalist David Taylor has to say.

H

AS Toyota taken BMW’s recipe and made it even better? In some ways, yes. Past experience with the BMW Z4 M40i derivative suggests it’s a brash and twitchy proposition when you pile on the pace; it requires dexterous steering inputs and vigilance with the throttle pedal, particularly on damp tarmac. By comparison, the GR Supra, thanks to its lighter mass and greater rigidity, tends to hunker down, grip and go, with minimal fuss, even in less-than-ideal conditions. The balance is superb – at no point do you sense the GR Supra is about to “turn around and bite you” – a fear that did lurk at the back of our minds when piloting the Z4.

While we can accept the use of a BMW straight-6 motor and the ZFsourced 8-speed transmission (a match made in heaven), it’s hard to ignore the plentitude of BMW switchgear in the

Toyota’s cabin. It’s true that the Toyota 86’s interior looks much like that of the Subaru BRZ and the Abarth 124 Spider’s cabin closely resembles that of the Mazda MX-5. However, the GR Supra is not a rebadged clone of the Z4, that’s abundantly clear from its striking and sinuous exterior styling. We just wish that more of the Toyota’s distinctiveness could have spilled over into its (albeit smart) interior... Should you buy one? If you’re in the market for a gorgeous, engrossing new sportscar, one that provides an abundance of driving thrills and allows you to rediscover the lost art of driving, then go for it. The GR Supra is an eminent all-rounder. Past experience with performance vehicles suggests that while many of them are adept at tackling mountain passes or racetracks, they’re often awful to drive on a daily basis. By contrast, the Toyota is refreshingly refined and happy to

potter along at 40 kph in early-morning traffic jams. Its levels of specification and occupant comfort make it more than bearable and, as this reviewer’s partner pointed out, “there’s enough boot space for a weekend away, and it’s not that bumpy”. Praise indeed. Toyota has created an attractive yet potent performer in the GR Supra. The car’s easy-going nature made us want to drive it again and again and it notably reminded us that you don’t need astonishing power at your right foot’s disposal to have a jolly good time behind the wheel. We pitted the 3.0T against the BMW M2 Competition for a video shoot at Killarney and afterwards, our test team members were clamouring for the Supra key – everyone wanted to drive it home. If that doesn’t speak volumes for how this car makes you feel, then we don’t know what does. David Taylor/ Cars.co.za

love coming to school every day – it’s a happy place for me,” says Sandy Wiggill, Umhlali Preparatory School’s new headmaster.

Sandy Wiggill is already a familiar face at Umhlali Preparatory School. She first joined them in 2003 as a grade six teacher. “It was probably my most memorable year of teaching,” adds Sandy, who was born in East London, and spent her childhood on the West Rand, in Krugersdorp. lY the onmostly Sandy -leGal always wanted to be a road teacher. Golf cartShe remembers playing ‘school’ in sa with her dolls, where she was the teacher and her dollsofthe pupils. “At We repair all makes carts, some stage I also customers’ dreamed carts of being an reburbish air hostess,” shebatteries muses, and “but my height and stock spares was against me – and boy, am I happy contact Vinnie 083 627 now that I didn’t grow any7190 taller!” office 032 586 1572

Her own teachers were instrumental in the development of her love of the profession, and Sandy still keeps in touch with the very first educators she encountered in her life from Monument Primary and Townview High School. She obtained a higher diploma in education at the University of Witwatersrand and specialised in home economics, English and Afrikaans. In addition to her love of sport, Sandy has a deep interest in dramatic art. She also likes to read, garden, walk (especially on the beach), play board games with friends, as well as do a bit of art and sewing. Sandy’s days as the new principal can get exceptionally busy, and she maintains the balance with a quiet

morning ritual. “I generally get up between 4-4:30am. I live close to the ocean, and there is no better way to start one’s day than with a cup of tea while you watch the sun rise. This is my quiet time when I nourish my soul.” “When I arrive at school, if I don’t have an early morning meeting, I like to be outside greeting the children as they arrive.” Likewise, when the paperwork and other duties are done, Sandy can be seen on the sidelines of Umhlali’s fields, watching the children playing their afternoon sport. “Watching children grow in confidence and ability in all facets of school life is extremely rewarding.”

Learning to

Ride Like a Pro Gill & Scott of Sugar Rats Cycling Academy gives insight into how the academy started and who will benefit from it How and when did Sugar Rats start and what made you get involved? Gill: I started Sugar Rats in 2010 when I saw the need for someone to take the children out riding - we would all meet at Holla (Orchid House now) on weekends and Thursday club nights to ride and the children would all wait for us. MTBing to me was the best thing I’d ever discovered and as I didn’t have a bike as a child, it was more challenging to learn. I soon realised that to learn when you are young is the best time so instead of me riding every Thursday I started taking groups of children out. Everything just fell into place, I called them Sugar Rats, designed a kit and started hosting Kids Spur races which was held once a month at Holla. Scott joined the Sugar Rats team

about 2 years ago and has taken it to another level, offering a higher level of coaching and giving our C21 Elite team the wings to fly. Scott plans all the sessions ensuring that all bases are covered. What is Sugar Rats all about? We offer children a safe environment to explore the incredible world of mountain biking and the amazing trails we are very privileged to have on the North Coast. We teach them all they need to know and have various groups for different strengths. Why did you pick SRP/Holla Trails are your base? I was probably one of Holla’s first members and it all started there - at the time my business was Sugar Rush but over the years it developed into what is now Sugar Rush Park. It’s the natural home for the Sugar

Rats Den. Scott: The brilliantly maintained What ages do you cater for? trails, the fellowship with like minded All ages - from 3/4 years old learning people after riding or running, the to ride without fairy wheels right up to diversity of the trails that allows us to racing age which can be 14/15 prepare for any type of racing When do you have Sugar Rats? Do you have any advice for parents We have our sessions on Tuesdays, who want to get their kids riding? Wednesdays and Thursdays - all Just to encourage them to ride dependent on strength and ability whenever you can, don’t push them too Fav route: hard or make it a task - we are here to It would have to be purple for me help, guide, nurture and grow the sport. and Pink for Scott but we love mixing If kids come for one session or never the routes up for the kids as we ride so miss a session, we are happy! often and need to keep it interesting plus It’s about family, exploring the according to their abilities. outdoors and just getting back to nature. What do you love most about Holla Trails/SRP? Gill: The vibe, all the happy people, being outdoors and a family lifestyle. Call Holla Trails on 082 899 3114 or email My happiest place is on a bike and if hollatrails.co.za. Find them at Sugar Rush we are surrounded by kids on our bikes Park, Esenembe Road, Ballito. then We are in MTB heaven!
