The heart is constantly hard at work.

It sits behind a solid wall of bone – the sternum – protecting this powerhouse of a muscle that is a complex and wonderful paradox.

Not only does it act as the most essential pump in our bodies, it can be figuratively broken, and yet not show a scar. It is the metaphorical hub of our hopes and dreams, and yet we are all guilty of taking it for granted.

The South African Heart and Stroke Foundation have some horrific statistics on their website lately – 225 South Africans are killed every day by heart disease, while 80 percent of heart disease and strokes can be prevented.

This is, quite obviously, no laughing matter, and we need to do more to protect ourselves and our loved ones from becoming part of this largely avoidable statistic.

On page 17 our in-house doc, Dr Rosie Carey, talks heart health, and offers practical, simple ways you can protect your heart.

In addition, on page 13 dietician Kim Martin discusses 11 food-derived nutrients you can start eating now for optimum heart health. You’d be surprised how simply it is to introduce small changes to your diet to protect your heart.

And speaking of proecting our hearts, for the object of your affection, we’ve rounded up a date-night to-do list that’s beyond the norm (not a ‘dinner and a movie’ date in sight!). Think adrenaline-inducing surf lessons, or surprise curated dates by an expert wingman. These ideas on page 20 are memory-makers!

Our newest contributor, arts and culture critic and producer Russel Hlongwane, who is not only able to cast his keen eye on KZN’s contemporary art scene for us, he is a celebrated artist in is own right, having showed his work from Tokyo to Harare, and Munich to Marrakech. We are proud to be able to bring you his voice.

This month on page 21, he reminds us via a recent exhibition, how our own country used to police our most basic of human rights; the right to fall in love with whomever we choose. Let this be a reminder to us of the joy we should find in quite simply having, and holding on to, our loved ones, in a country that now allows us this beautiful freedom.

The highly anticipated Reddam House has opened its doors in Ballito, and it required a principal with nerves of steel to steer the ship through both construction deadlines, and building vital new relationships. Luckily for Reddam, they found Catherine Raw.

After having spent many a family holiday on the North Coast, he had always dreamed of building a school overlooking the rolling green hills of Ballito. Serendipity brought the vacant piece of land behind the Ballito Junction Mall to his attention, and he didn’t hesitate to snap it up.

Catherine is no stranger to Graeme Crawford and his team. She taught at Crawford Durban before her tenure with Westville Girls, when he still operated the Crawford schools.

Graeme Crawford seems to be setting the bar higher and higher these days, and with his Reddam House schools he aims to change the face of education in South Africa with progressive methodologies, and an international outlook. Academic Celebrations at Ashton On Wednesday, 6 February, we celebrated the achievements of the Junior College Grade 6 students who wrote the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint external examinations in November last year. These exams are marked in the UK. We were delighted with the excellent results, with five of our students receiving 100% in all three the examinable subjects – Mathematics, English and Science. Congratulations to Rebekah Groenewald, Danica Moodie, Caitlin Pansegrouw, Kelly Watkins and Asara Zedde. “I am so incredibly proud of all the students who wrote these external examinations and congratulate each and every one on their phenomenal results and a 100% pass rate,” said Ms Nikki Hamann, Head of the Intersen Phase.

THE CORE of the matter

MAGINE trying to paint on a wall while standing on a tall, wobbly ladder, explains Nicola Stirton, an occupational therapist from the Clay paediatric occupational therapy practice in Salt Rock.

“You would have limited stability, impacting the quality of the painting, verses standing on the ground with a stable base of support, allowing for controlled movements.” And the same goes for adults and children – a weak core introduces a host of problems, and these are not necessarily only physical.

“The stability of your core has a direct impact on the development of your gross and fine motor skills, which impacts engagement in play and learning opportunities,” explains Nicola.

Owner of the popular Glide and Ride business, Ian Wilson, who teaches children mountain bike skills, agrees.

What can you do?

“Movement and deep pressure activities are key,” explains Nicola, “such as swinging, sliding, climbing, rolling, jumping, and pushing/pulling activities. Children should climb trees, ride bicycles, do wheelbarrow walks, dance and move. Doing activities that involve flexion (rolling up into a ball) and extension (superman) will help their core. Nicola recommends the following activities: Flexion - climbing a tree, sit ups, kicking balls away, leg pull ups on monkey bars, squeezing into a ball and holding this position.

Extension - body boarding or surfing, lying on a skate board, wheelbarrow walks, bridge position, swimming.

A weak core in children can be deeply problematic, and if children don’t have strong posture, it leads to not being able to sit for long periods, which leads to lack of concentration, he adds.

“It also leads to low muscle tone, which compounds in a school environment where children feel the social impact of not being able to do things physically that others can do, which in turn hits their confidence, and creates a host of other issues.”

Sounds like a vicious cycle, and who would have thought that behavioural issues may be related to something as simple as posture and muscle tone?

Ian developed Glide and Ride in 2015, as a “holistic programme to develop children using a bicycle as the medium.”

“It is far more than just teaching kids to ride bikes,” adds Ian. “We get children off the couch and away from screens, and create the desire to be more active.”

But what exactly is our ‘core’, and how does it develop?

“Your core refers to your postural/ intrinsic muscles that stabilise your spine, helping you maintain an upright posture,” explains Nicola, and “from birth, it is important that children are exposed to enough age-appropriate stimulation and strengthening activities as possible.”

“Babies should be exposed to appropriate tummy time, rather than being left in carriers, car chairs or prams. Toddlers should be given opportunities to crawl on various surfaces and on different textures, rather than being placed in front of the TV. The latest recommendations in the USA, state that children should not be exposed to any screen time until the age of 2 years.”

Nicola and her colleagues have seen a “rapid increase in the past 10 years of children being referred for assessments and intervention. We feel that our lifestyles have had a big impact on children's development; children are being exposed to more screen time, less outside play time and are more sedentary.”

“Children may not reach all their gross motor milestones such as sitting and crawling on time, some may skip milestones completely,” says Nicola.

“Toddlers may present with limited balance, poor endurance, and may avoid gross motor and jungle gym equipment. Fine motor skills may be more challenging for these children, as they fatigue easily when holding a pencil or cutting with scissors. This can have an impact on their pencil grips, which will impact on their writing.”

Single Track Minded Ian’s parent company does so much more than teach bike skills. Ian’s pride and joy is his work at Mswhati Primary School.

“A percentage of the fees go towards teaching kids who are less fortunate,” explains Ian. “Every Friday, we go to Mswhati Primary. Most of the children are from single-parent households, and the chance of them owning a bike or being able to ride is remote.” The only “currency” is attendance; as long as the children attend class, they can come to his bike-riding classes.

A little exhiliration, paired with learning a new skill, is sometimes just what the doctor ordered for long-term partnerships, and what could be more perfect for North Coast couples than learning how to surf?

Ballito local Janek Ferrandi, who grew up surfing our beaches from the age of 10, is at the helm of the Ballito Surf School where he’s taught people to surf from the age of seven and up.

After spending some time in Western Australia as a professional lifeguard (which is hugely reassuring for first-time learners), he soon realized that he simply has a passion for the ocean. “I can’t seem to find myself working anywhere else - I tried!” says Janek.

Prospective students require basic swimming skills, and “then just courage to rise up to the challenge,” adds Janek. “It can be very challenging for some.”

Janek recommends up to three lessons to understand the basics, and costs range between R300 and R200 per person, for an hour lesson, depending on how many people there are per session.

The statistics of heart attacks and strokes in South Africa are frightening, but did you know that your diet can reduce your risk?

Dietician Kim Wilson tells us what to eat for a healthier heart.

CCORDING to the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, five people have heart attacks and 10 people have strokes every single hour.

If that’s not scary enough, of those 15 events on average 10 people will die from them.

On a more positive note, what you eat plays an enormous role in the health of your heart, and can influence your risk for heart disease.

Here are 11 important nutrients that you should be eating regularly to maximize the health of your heart:

SMILE A WHILE

At the end of 2018, Ballito resident Felicia Alberts received the gift of a beautiful smile from Dr Thinus van Niekerk from the Cosmetic and Dental Emporium. But her transformation was the collaborative result of a few kind souls, including our very own 88.0FM team, who clubbed together to make her 2019 a year of success, and self-confidence.

Here, Dr T gives us a recap of Felicia’s journey.

MET Felicia in November of 2018 at the 88FM studio. She was tentative in her manner, soft spoken and withdrawn. Her eyes searching yet sparkling, and yearning to tell a story.

During an off-air interview, she revealed to Mike Charles and myself how the setbacks she had endured in life, slowly and unwittingly, constructed a metaphorical wall around her. She

allowed her sense of self-esteem to be drowned - periodically and relentlessly.

This lead to a final moment when she was turned down for a job purely based on her appearance and the image she presented.

It was time for change. So, with the help and inspiration from Thabi Hlalele, a team was set up that would make the transformation a reality. True change however happens on the inside. It is an inward decision. It is a mind-shift that elevates thoughts to a new level of belief that anything is possible. And it was our mission to make Felicia believe again.

Over the course of six weeks, Felicia and I worked towards our dream smile. We had a clear plan of where we wanted to go and of the amount of work involved to get us there. A smile makeover was planned and wrinkles were removed with neuromodulators and plasma treatment. Taking that first step was always going to be uncomfortable and scary. I remember how it took ten minutes to encourage her to smile for a photograph - and even then it was more a grimace.

and discipline on her part.

But, after each appointment we got increasingly excited about the fast approaching finish line.

It was a week before Christmas and the day of the big reveal was finally upon us!

After two-years of back-packing through Europe with his beloved dogs and being shocked at the state of the world’s oceans, Stefan Graunke is determined not to let our coastline degenerate.

He spoke to Melanie Reeder-Powell about his plan to walk the SA coastline and raise awareness.

“I was shocked at the condition of the wildlife and oceans over there,” he explains.

“Coming back to this beautifully diverse and wild country, I wanted do something to save my country’s oceans and coastlines as much as I could.”

Horrified by what he saw throughout Europe, Stefan came home resolute that he couldn’t stand idle and watch South Africa’s magnificent beaches eventually succumb to pollution and human interference.

With a German father and Italian mom, Stefan seems to have an inherent wanderlust, and the Joburg native soon dreamed up his next mission that he dubbed Coastal Ghost.

“It started as a trip that I was ready to take alone, to do my bit for the environment,” says Stefan.

“But a Facebook follower found me and wrote an article about the trip on goodthingsguy.com and it

“At first I was worried,” he adds, “but seeing the amazing responses from South Africans, I am embracing this and want to get as many people as possible to join us on the beaches.”

“My goal is to clean up our beaches,” says Stefan.

Quite simply, “the more hands, the more rubbish we can collect.”

“We will be road tripping and stopping off at as many beaches as possible, with Altair, Ksora and Zypher (Stefan’s three Border Collies). We’ll be meeting locals and supporters and together we will be talking long romantic walks, watching the sun rise and making a difference!”

Stefan’s funding so far has come largely from his own savings, and from his sister and parents. “But it’s not money that drives something like this,” says the avid photographer and scuba diver. “It’s trust, and love,” and Stefan is placing great trust in the process, and in people’s kindness.

The journey is around 2 780km, stopping off at

over 50 (or more if possible) beaches from Richards Bay until the tyres roll into Port Nolloth in the Namaqualand region of the north western coast.

“We are depending on our supporters to help us find places to camp or get hosts along the way to help us out. My sister is buying me two of the five new tyres that my temperamental old Landy needs to make it to the end. My mom is paying for the first three tanks of fuel and from there we are on our own. My dad will be at home holding the fort as my mom will be joining me for part of the way.”

Stefan’s goal has become so much more then just cleaning the beaches. “I hope to use this as a catalyst to bring our people together, and create change for our country.”

COFFEE CULTURE The National Coffee Championships is a big deal, and it’s headed our way.

The Ballito Lifestyle Centre will play host to the boldest of brews from 21-24 February, and you’re invited.

T

HIS month, no less than 40 regional finalists from all over South Africa will vie for the title of National Champion in three categories, namely barista, latte art and cup tasters championships. The triumphant winners will go on to represent South Africa on a global platform.

The process is tough, with 25 judges, including a number of renowned international specialists, making up the panels that will be tasked with watching and scoring the movements and techniques of the contestants.

The competition will be held in the covered area outside Weylandts, running the length of the area from Hair 4 U to LOAF Café and Gin Bar. Centre Manager, Mark Pearse says, “Two stages will be set up

with ample seating for spectators.”

Bernard Muneri, Specialty Coffee Association of South Africa (SCASA) chairperson, explains that the barista championship competitors have been preparing for the finals round of this competition for several months. They source speciality grade green coffee internationally, then roast it and present it on stage during a 15-minute presentation.

They serve four espresso, four milk beverages and four signature drinks to a panel of sensory judges, while explaining the story and origin of their coffee.

Finally, the most extraordinary palates in the South African coffee industry get together to see who can ‘out taste’ the rest.

If you’re planning on heading to one of our beautiful beaches with your Valentine this month, KwaDukuza’s beach manager ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honneysett sets us straight on the do’s and don’ts.

I

t has been said that there is never a time or place for true love, it happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, moment.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and for many it means planning that special day or evening around romance and an unforgettable experience.

If you are thinking of arranging a romantic experience on one of our beaches, here are a few pointers to remember when you are burning the midnight oil trying to come up with a plan to impress your better half.

I think your first priority should be safety and security, so consider where you want to have that romantic picnic or sun downer drink. Avoid quiet, dark areas where there are no other people in sight, and consider parking your car in a place that is well lit, and is visible.

Take only plastic containers onto the beaches rather than glass. Although plastic is not our friend, it’s safer than glass. Just make sure you pop it into one of our recycle bins which can be found at many of our main car parks. There are also plenty of re-usable plastic glasses and crockery options to choose from.

Romantic bonfires are cosy, but make sure you observe our bylaws and remember that although we do not permit

open fires, you can make arrangement with the municipality to have a controlled fire, which is contained in a drum or portable braai, and that will not leave hot coals for someone to stand on.

With regard to alcohol consumption on the beach, two areas that the ‘no drinking in public’ rule applies are in the bylaws of Kwadukuza Municipality, and in the Seashore Regulations Act from National Government.

Consider our pets and wild animals if you are thinking of a fireworks display, there are signs all over our town stating that we are a fireworks free area and you must apply to the municipality for special permission. Echo friendly estates do not allow fireworks at all.

Lastly Chinese lanterns may look amazing as they float off into the heavens but what goes up must come down and too often these get confused for ships distress flares and the poor sea rescue services get the run around.

Yes Valentine’s Day is a great time to celebrate ones love and you really can have that beach experience despite all the rules.

Be careful, be safe and be observant.

There’s a craft revolution happening in KZN, with an enviable array of artisanal brews to choose from. Here’s our round-up of the best distillers and breweries in the area.

POISON CITY BREWING

Edgy, passionate, and vehemently KZN-centric, this brewery has made international waves with Durban-born Graeme Bird and Andre Schubert at the helm.

“Our first four products were traditional craft beers and our latest product is South Africa’s first cannabis beer,” says Graeme, who lives in Umdloti, but still spends time in his beloved Durban.

Based in Station Drive, their beers are all made in small batches, “with the quality of our ingredients being key to our success,” he explains.

The craft beers; The Bird (a Germanstyle lager), The Punk Rocker (an English Pale Ale), The Other Bird (a Czech Dark Lager) and The Poison (an IPA), are available in a limited number of places in major cities.

The label of Zulu Rum is a symbolic one, depicting the very beginning of the association of rum with the Zulu army. The story goes that the first time the Zulu people came into contact with rum was when they defeated the British Army at the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, and captured their rum rations.

The idea for Zulu Rum first occurred to owner Clinton Wyness when travelling through the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, which were blanketed in sugar cane. He thought it strange that the province did not have its own rum, knowing that most other sugar producing areas, such as Mauritius, the Caribbean and Australia all had a flourishing rum industry. Hence he approached good friend Wayne Oliver, who

LUYT LAGER

No other craft beer has had quite the history of this legendary brew, that bravely launched in an era when SAB was the behemoth of breweries in 1972. Its famous namesake, Louis Luyt senior, still managed to capture 14 percent of the market in the beer’s first year, explains his son Louis junior. However, despite a partnership with Anton Rupert, Louis senior eventually sold his shares to Anton, and after a short-lived existence, the infamous lager went off the market.

Phoenix-like, it resurfaced in 2009 in Ballito, but admits Louis junior, microbreweries in South Africa were not quite a ‘thing’ yet, and despite doubling the volume each year, Luyt Lager was “ahead of its’ time.” “We sold off the equipment to Cape Town,” explains Louis, and the brewery went into hibernation again.

Now, Louis Junior has resurrected his father’s beloved beer, almost as an ode to his dad’s legacy, but also because he quite simply believes in his product.

Carbonation is key, says Louis, explaining that Luyt Lager’s carbonation is very low – they rather look to natural carbonation, and don’t want their customers to feel ‘full’ after enjoying their brew. With four-percent alcohol, Louis prides himself on the beer’s drinkability.

BALLITO BREWING COMPANY

After teaching themselves to brew in 2014, KZN-born Gary Wilby (who is the brewer and has a chemistry degree) and his wife Ursula are currently brewing eight styles of craft beer, with an IPA in development.

“We have also recently begun blending our own unique craft gin and tonic,” adds Ursula from their Shakashead premises.

Their Ballito Belgian Ale, Irish Red Ale, Shaka’s Impi Lager and Belgian Witbier are all testaments to a European heritage, rooted in Africa.

following four ingredients as laid out by the German purity law of 1516; Reinheidsgebot i.e. water, malted barley (grain) hops and yeast. The malted barley we use contains starches which we convert to sugars. The resultant sugar solution is then boiled with the addition of hops. This is then cooled, and yeast added. The yeast intern ingests the sugars and the bio product is alcohol and carbon dioxide. The CO2 produced during the fermentation is then reabsorbed and this is what gives our beers its carbonation.”

Q: You are from Lesotho, so why the North Coast?

A: Firstly, the winters are a hell of a lot warmer! It was never a tough decision, but secondly I needed a radical change in my life. I had travelled to KZN four times before the opportunity to move here became a reality. Each time I came to the coast I fell more and more in love with its offering. You feel it in the atmosphere the minute you cross over the Free State border into KZN. The grass is a different shade of green. The air is different too. I found a certain peace and serenity every time I sat at the beach and gazed at the never-ending ocean. So when the opportunity for permanent employment came knocking I took a leap of faith and packed my bags, and never looked back.

Q. Let’s talk music, what do you love listening to?

A. I'm a neo-soul sister. Give me Amel Larrieux, a little Erykah Badu, some Angie Stone, India Arie, Lauryn Hill, or Mary J and you've got my soul. Q: How long have you been in radio?

A: I love telling people my age just to see their jaws drop. I am a 37-year-old 15-year-old - I look like a child! It’s been a blessing and a curse most of my life.

I have been on and off radio for the past 16 years. I was thrown into the deep end of radio in March 2002 when I hosted the breakfast show on PC FM in Lesotho, on what was intended to be a shadow internship. That morning evolved into a sink or swim situation when I was forced to host my first live radio show, since the presenter didn’t arrive for work! I was called back to co-host the following day, and the rest is history – I had found my passion.

Q: When you're not on the radio, what are you doing?

A: I Love ME Time, especially on my weekends off. I ‘love’ a lot and a good portion of my days in the week are spent loving and caring for others, so come the weekend, I love on ME! LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD Our latest contributor, arts and culture creator and curator Russel Hlongwane, muses on the KZNSA’s most recent exhibition that, appropriately during the month of love, drew attention to the divides placed on romantic love by our apartheid past.

D

URBAN has, in the more recent years, become rather lacklustre in its artistic offering. It has taken third place to Johannesburg and Cape Town, despite the fact that Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal as a whole, produces so much talent that is ultimately lost to the two big cities.

There has, however, been a change in tide.

There is strong evidence of a young generation of artists who are steadily reinvigorating the sector, albeit in modest ways.

There is also a growing curiosity amongst what could be called the Durban diaspora, these being artists who outgrew Durban, and situated themselves within more international networks of artistic practice.

One such recent exhibition and collaboration brought together an established and internationally renowned curator and artist, Gabi Ngcobo, who has her roots in Durban, with two emerging voices from the city, Sumayya Menezes

and Zinhle Khumalo, under the title ‘Mating Birds Vol.2.’

This elaborate and reflective curatorial essay placed the spotlight on the problematic ways that the colonial and apartheid system regulated and mediated the dimension of love along racial lines.

Mating Birds Vol.2 used the great, late Lewis Nkosi’s novel Mating Birds as a point of departure, and as a basis

to visualize the troublesome histories associated with the Immorality Acts of the parliament of colonial and apartheid South Africa (Act No.5 of 1927, Act No. 23 of 1957, Act No. 57 of 1969).

The curators do the important work of connecting this legacy to contemporary perspectives on sex, sexuality and sexual relationships.

To use the words of the host venue, the KZNSA Gallery, ‘’The essay draws on original artwork as well as reference material from art, literature, philosophy, legal documents, letters, newspaper clippings and exhibition catalogues, among other sources.

Lewis Nkosi’s first novel is set in Durban’s segregated beaches, and narrated by a black man awaiting execution for allegedly raping a white woman. When it appeared, the novel was equally critiqued and praised by many, including Henry Louis Gates Junior, who remarked in The New York Times how it “confronts boldly and imaginatively the strange interplay of bondage, desire and torture inherent in interracial sexual relationships within the South African prison house of apartheid.”

Meanwhile, South African writer Andre Brink accused Nkosi of being fascinated with interracial sexual relations and of being guilty of "distortion and exaggeration."

Mating Birds can be understood as a story about the distortion of intimate relationships in apartheid South Africa.

They go on to say, ‘’Mating Birds Vol.2 uses the exhibition space to map the manner in which artists have intervened in the space of sexual politics and how they continue to reshape the

visual vocabulary of sexuality and sexual freedoms, whilst questioning the way bodies are still impacted by the residual nature of repressing colonial and apartheid policies.’’

The exhibition called upon works by prominent artists such as Billie Zangewa, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Lady Skollie, Sabelo Mlangeni, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Tracey Rose and Trevor Makhoba.

Reference materials are drawn from literature, including, Bessie Head, Lebo Mashile, Lewis Nkosi, Makhosazana Xaba and Zakes Mda, as well philosophical texts, historical archives and other sources.

The range of artists featured is drawn from vastly different disciplines of knowledge and cultural productions, such as painting, literature, and even silk fabrics, poetry and multimedia.

The exhibition occupied a short-lived window as it unfortunately closed on the 10th February 2019.

I

N December I bought a bike.

And as I sit here looking at that short sentence, I must admit to feeling a little nostalgic. I have been the proud owner of some really lovely bikes, bikes that have all said “@#$% you”, to the receding hair and ever-increasing lines on my face. There’s nothing at Dischem that even comes close to the surge of adrenalin from a V Twin at full throttle and the cackle of the grim reaper is no match for the roar of the pipes. I loved those bikes and connection they gave me to the spirit of freedom and my wild younger years.

But not everyone is a fan of the motorcycle and my beloved Sue made it quite clear that she would never share this joy with me. In fact, when I bought my last motorcycle, she set off to climb Kilimanjaro – an adventure for which my participation was clearly not required.

what got me thinking – maybe this would be more do-able!

So, we hired a couple of bikes and set off on an ‘introduction to mountain biking’ group ride under the tuition of Dr Rosie Carey, brand ambassador for Concept Cyclery in Ballito. It was both daunting and fun…and I really enjoyed it, so in December we bought mountain bikes…and all the kit.

So I was now that guy – all the gear and no idea.

We have ridden regularly since then and I am getting better at it, despite some setbacks. Like the beginner group ride last Saturday – this one for the slightly more ambitious. Rosie assured me that we would be back early enough to make my early morning music gig at the Lifestyle Centre Market, so off we set.

But 5km up the trail on a particularly rocky incline, my back tyre exploded – well, that’s what it felt like. Apparently this

A suggestion that more such adventures might follow until I came to my senses and took up a more sensible pastime, was enough to eventually persuade me to hang up my helmet.

Sue has become a very keen runner and so I thought I might give that trendy pursuit a bash. I started slowly, walking, under the guidance of a brassy American in an app on my smartphone. She was very encouraging and we got on quite well at first, but I found the entire exercise mind-numbingly boring. Old injuries soon flared up and after limping along for a while, I turned my attention to other interests and bought a sports car that needed some love.

But late last year, Sue was introduced to the sport of mountain bike riding at Holla Trails near Ballito and this is

hardly ever happens (well, not to the lighter riders) and despite my carrying every conceivable emergency repair product in my saddle bag for just such an occasion, I had not the faintest clue how to go about effecting a repair. So, I used my cell phone to call the trail master who collected us with a wry smile.

I was painfully aware of the chuckles from the runners gathering for the Park Run as we returned to the Holla Trails HQ on the back of his bakkie.

See – all the gear and no idea… but, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, “I’ll be back”!
