Home truths
I
HAVE been a bit of a nomad for most of my life, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes by choice. I spent my childhood wandering the wild coastlines of the old Transkei before my family moved to Port Elizabeth in my teens. I completed high school in the snow-covered mountains of Colorado in the US, before pursuing my studies in historic Grahamstown, reading literature under the Jacarandas.
I learned how to hustle in the rat-race of Joburg in the world of magazines and print media, before leaving it all behind to roam the Kamberg Valley and write a book from my cocoon in the silent forests of Mtunzini. I had my two children in the Lowveld, where our time was punctuated by leopard-spotting and dung beetle tracking, before circumstance brought us back to KZN, where I now find myself editing Life & Style. When meeting new people, they often ask where I’m from, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to respond to this question, as I contemplate my 01 March – Free Yoga own origins and the many, Yip, that’s what we said! people and, as we know all to well in South Africa, this never ends well. ‘Home’ is such a sacred space, and in this edition, we are celebrating the luxury of having a home, and the beautiful place we all get to call home. On page 11 we interview Katmandu restaurant’s executive chef, Steven La Fountain, who couldn’t be a better representation of global citizenry after having lived and worked from Frankfurt to Vermont, and New York to Umhlanga, and who now heads up a restaurant celebrating world food and culture. (Check out the charming Sam Machipisa, Katmandu’s talented barista on our cover.) Our resident DIY guru Allen Petrie talks ‘cocooning’ on page 9, offering simple ways in which you can cultivate places of comfort in your homes. We also cover Ballito’s first official openwater swim challenge on page 4, which is an exciting addition to the year’s sporting calendar, and is set to attract swimmers from all over the world next year. Speaking of celebrating our domestic spaces, the Life & Style team, along with our colleagues at 88.0FM, are gearing up for Decorex Durban 2019, for which we are a media partner. Pencil in the dates (21-24 March), and make sure you pop in to the ICC and visit us at our stand. We’d love to see you! We’ll be running competitions to win media packages from us (to help you fasttrack your business), and we’ll be doing live crossings with our radio team, giving both our readers and the 88.0FM listeners the inside scoop on global design and décor trends. Visit reedexpoafrica.co.za/decorex for updates and tickets. Until next time,
02 & 03 March – Shave it off
CANSA’s 16th national Shavathon campaign has the theme ‘Colouring Hope’. Shavathon started as a way to show support for cancer patients. Participants donate a fee to shave or spray their hair. You can even donate a ponytail to make a wig. A children’s colouring book and crayons will also be on sale at R25 each, and a limited edition bandana is also available at R50. Head to The Ballito Junction Regional Mall from 9am until 5pm. Adults pay R50 and children under 12 pay R25.

21-24 March – Get excited for Decorex Get your tickets from reedexpoafrica. co.za and head to the Durban ICC for an awe-inspiring trip into the world of global décor trends and design ideas. Not only is there a host of exciting exhibitors, but the food and drink promise to be just as trendsetting – try out the Rummery (rum is the new gin, didn’t you know?). Friday 22nd is ‘Pink Friday’ with a pop-up market. Come and say hi to the Life & Style team!

Property Talk WITH HARCOURTS BALLITO Dennis Scott from Harcourts Ballito unpacks the status quo, as well as what to expect for the year ahead
A
S a service to our clients we include this article for information with acknowledgement to Lightstone Property.
While sales for 2018 are still working their way through the deeds’ registration process, a preliminary review of our forecast of 2018 indicates that the market is ending the year closer to the 2,9 percent low-road scenario, as opposed to the forecasted 3,8 percent. Paul-Roux de Kock, Analytics Director at Lightstone, the provider of comprehensive data, analytics and systems on property, explains that the outcome was mainly due to a lower performing GDP rate; a trend de Kock anticipates continuing into this year with house price inflation currently at 3 percent. “Taking into account current CPI at 4,5 percent, the mid-value segment experienced lacklustre growth, while the luxury market had a disappointing year with negative real price growth.” De Kock says that realistic local forecasts indicate that the GDP will grow between 0.75 percent and 1.5 percent, and CPI will range between 4 percent - 5.5 percent for 2019. The 2019 Residential Property Forecast is developed according to tested scenarios using the before mentioned parameters and fluctuations in the prime lending rate of between -0.5 to 1.0 basis point.
PROPERTY VALUE BANDS FORECAST Luxury Market Segment: Similar to the disappointing performance in 2018, the luxury market is expected to continue its negative nominal growth during the first quarter, before correcting during the second half of 2019. The rebound can be swift under a high-road scenario as the expectation that this segment should track the CPI growth figures more closely is reinforced. High Value Segment: During 2018 house prices grew by 2,6 percent and this growth is expected to tick up slightly during 2019 and end the year at 2,9 percent. Mid Value Segment: As one of the 2018 property success stories, this segment benefited largely thanks to upward mobility of the lower-end affordable market as well as homeowners downscaling from higher value segments. This segment is set to stabilise and end 2019 at 4,7 percent with strong real value growth should the economy follow the high road scenario performing emerging market economy. “In the run up to the national elections, uncertainty will most likely increase in the property market as the political and economic environment remains tumultuous,” says De Kock. Specifically, in the residential property sector, debates on land reform are expected to continue to influence buyer confidence; however, De Kock highlights that there are early indications in the data that the property industry could still experience a robust recovery in 2019.
THE NATIONAL FORECAST “As can be expected, the first quarter of 2019 will continue on a similar slow downward trend, within the constrained economic environment.” According to De Kock, the country will most likely experience a positive economic turnaround post-election, and certainty on economic policy and property ownership are likely to stimulate positive property market activity. When analysing the three different scenarios as modelled by data scientists at Lightstone, it is revealed that, should the market follow the mid-road scenario, it will end the year in a similar position as 2018. “On the positive though, should the economy fundamentally strengthen and significantly boost buyer confidence in the market, it could not only end in a high-road scenario, but has the potential to break through this forecasted percentage.” The latter scenario was not explicitly modelled during the forecast but is based on intuitive expectations from a healthy performing emerging market economy. The DOLPHIN RUN
Ballito’s inaugural open-water challenge kicked off recently, and with our spectacular coastline the Dolphin Coast is sure to attract a future host of global swimmers with a penchant for the open seas.
O
PEN-water swimming is a fast-growing sport. The element of danger that swimmers confront in outdoor bodies of water like open oceans, lakes, and rivers adds to the excitement of the challenge - and who doesn’t enjoy a little excitement?
When Lord Byron swam several miles to cross the Hellespont from Europe to Asia on May 3, 1810, he really started something. This was the beginning of the modern
swim that will attract people from across the globe to tackle their home waters. The conditions here are particularly exciting. The surf can be big, the currents are strong and the sea life is spectacular. It’s not ever going to be easy, but the rewards are there for those who dare to seek them. Their inaugural Ballito to Salt Rock swim on Saturday 16th February attracted a field of 14 swimmers, all of whom were able to complete the 5km from Clarke Bay to age of open water swimming. Ask any of our local longdistance swimmers who recently swam in Ballito’s first open water challenge last Saturday and they will tell you that it’s a feeling you have to experience. Swimming is an individual sport, with only you and your thoughts moving through the water (mostly) uninterrupted. If you are fortunate enough, you could get a rare visit from one of the many ocean creatures, both big and small. The mere mention of the ‘S’ word (I’m referring of course not to swimming, but to sharks!) puts many a swimmer in reverse mode straight back to the dam or pool, when it truly is a rare occurrence, like confronting a snake or seeing a leopard in the bush. Swimming over reefs full of fish or watching the movement of the sand as the swells move over it is quite mesmerizing, and it seems to take away the pain of physical exertion. Having spent years in the ocean doing various

TIME TO MOUNT UP In this month’s instalment of our series for mountain bike beginners, our resident medical doctor and athlete extraordinaire, Dr Rosie Carey, tells you how to kick your new biking hobby into gear
Y
OU have the bike, you have the kit, you have the gear; now you actually need to get onto the bike and ride.
Before heading out to Holla Trails (my preferred spot for riding), I suggest that you get comfortable with your bike in your garden or driveway. If you don’t have a suitable space, there is a large grass parking lot at Holla Trails that you can use. Learn which are your back brakes and which are your front and get comfortable with changing gears and learning which gears are which. It helps a lot if you are comfortable with your bike before heading out to the single track – trust me, you don’t want to be worrying about which brake is your back brake while you’re busy careening down a steep hill. Another note about bike comfort is to ensure before you take your bike out for a ride that you’ve had it set up properly. Your local bike shop will do this for you and it takes a few minutes. It’s basically adjusting the seat and handle bar height to fit your body. An incorrect bike set-up can lead to, at best, an uncomfortable ride and, at worst, an injury. Once you are comfortable with your bike, you are ready to take it out for a ride. Yay! The following are some tips to making your ride more enjoyable and less scary.
1. Mostly use your back brake. As a beginner rider, you should use your back brake for about 70 percent of your braking power, and your front brake for the remaining 30 percent (gently pull both brakes at the same time in that ratio). Grabbing your front brake is instinctive, but it will result in you going over the handle bars, which could cut short your budding mountain biking
career. 2. Look where you want to go (and not at the obstacles you want to avoid). Trees on either side of the trail? Look straight through them at the trail ahead. Big root across the trail? Look past it at the trail ahead. High bridge? Look at the far end of the bridge; and never, ever look down. Again, it goes against your instincts to avoid looking at obstacles, but the rule of mountain biking is that you go where you look. Try it out if you don’t believe me, just not on a high bridge! 3. When going down a steep downhill, keep your weight back. That way, its more unlikely for you to go over your handle bars. You really want to avoid going over the handle bars if possible! 4. Speed is your friend. Yes, this goes against your instincts too (sensing a common theme here?). The faster you are riding, the more stable you are. Don’t
Ca Dr R tch next osie’s fea biking Life ture in & 27 M Style arch
believe me? Imagine a rolling tyre: it’s far more likely to stay upright while it’s got some speed. Once it starts to slow down, the tyre starts to wobble and once it slows down enough, it falls over. So, when you’re unsure, speed up instead of slowing down. 5. Commit. (Kind of like in life.) Once you’ve committed to something, a downhill for example, stay with it. Don’t change your mind halfway down the hill and try to get off the bike, as the chances are very high that you’ll fall. Choose a line, commit and go for it. Hesitation will only lead to falls. If you are too nervous to do something, rather get off your bike before attempting it and push your bike over the bridge, obstacle, or downhill. Of course, it’s far easier to learn something like mountain biking out in the field (see the pun?) than off a piece of paper, so try to get a patient and experienced friend to help you start off your mountain bike journey.
Call Concept Cyclery Ballito on 032 586 3681 to find out more about joining one of the beginners’ rides.
ME & Bobby McGee As his partner Sue literally heads for the hills, Life & Style editor-in-chief Dave Charles finds that going solo has steadily lost its appeal.
A
FTER thirty years of marriage the prospect of being single again, even for a weekend, could be an exciting prospect. The freedom to completely own the remote, eat and drink all the forbidden fruit, to lie in for as long as you like, stay up as late as you like, tinker with your toys to your heart’s content…what bliss!
This was what I consoled myself with when my beloved, Sue told me that she was planning to run another crazy trail. s Three days of running up and down mountains would be my idea of Hell, but as she loves these things, who am I to stand in her way. I drove her to the rendezvous with her running companions on Thursday, offloaded more kit than Livingstone had to explore Africa with, and returned to a completely empty nest. Well, it wasn’t completely empty. Our German Shepherd Dog, Ruby was waiting for me on my return from the Open Mic Night at the Lifestyle Centre that we help to coordinate every third Thursday of the month. Well, I thought that she was waiting for me, but I soon realised that she was actually waiting for Sue and, when she realised that I was alone, she gave me that look… and went off somewhere to hide. A week earlier I had taken Troy, her life-long pal, to the vet and he never came back. Now it would appear that I had done something similar with Sue… I hit the pantry and, to my joy, discovered not one but TWO packets of Lindt Fruit Sensation dark chocolate
coated blueberry and Acai treats that had not been hidden very well at all! Then I made a strong Nespresso and made a beeline for the TV. We recently replaced our DSTV service with an internet streaming device called the Boxx that offers over 200 channels of interesting viewing, some of them distinctly xxx and not suitable for family viewing. Did I watch any of these? Well, you have to flick past them to get to the BBC channels or the latest movies, so I may have paused there for a second or two, but I digress. I found a brilliant latest release movie and settled in for a night of chocolate and coffee powered binge viewing. I felt distinctly hung over in the morning and despite a full day at work, the emptiness of the house and the sulking Ruby had begun to weigh heavily. I went for a drive into the hills yesterday morning and realised that I am not very good at being single. It feels like I have been marooned here in my sleep shorts for about a month now as I tap this missive into my computer today. It’s Sunday, and I am expecting a call from Sue when she is back in range – did I mention that she was out of cell phone range in the mountains? Ruby has mellowed slightly. I took her for a walk yesterday afternoon that did a little to ease the tension but she still looks at me accusingly. Neither of us has enjoyed the sabbatical. I can’t watch another minute of television – my
focus is getting fuzzy – and I didn’t even get to the second packet of Lindt! Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…Kristofferson knew a thing or two after all.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
The North Coast is home to some exceptionally creative family-owned businesses. We sit down with the owners of Blue Bay Lifestyle Furniture, and the unique mixed-use space, Re-Freshed.
Into the Blue
W
HEN we meet, David Pearce has just completed his radio interview with our very own Mike in the Morning on 88.0FM, and he’s buzzing with excitement about the family business he’s so much a part of.
He and fiancé Sam Bezuidenhout, who’ve been together for eight years, both joined her father Wynand in Blue Bay Lifestyle Furniture in 2014 after completing their studies in Stellenbosch; David in business management and financial accounting, and Sam in photography and graphic design. Wynand’s background was in the sugar packaging industry in Swaziland, but as David explains, his father-in-law-to-be is an entrepreneur at heart. It’s a marriage of minds and skills, with each member contributing their unique, and complementary, skills set.
Girl Power
I
T’S not long into our interview before the women of Re-Freshed Designs are teasing each other and having a fun family feud at the table. They are a true bevvy of beauties and creatives, and the energy is contagious.
Matriarch Sharon Paterson is a creative force. Originally from Kwa-Zulu Natal but having lived in Graskop in Mpumalanga for many years, she has a plethora of artistic endeavours behind her. She still owns a restaurant (Pilgrim’s Pantry) and art store (Ponieskrantz Arts and Crafts) in Pilgrim’s Rest, from where much of her

Blue Bay has a 15-year legacy, explains David, although the tides have shifted over the years. Once Wynand Bezuidenhout got involved in 2013 and, over time, bought out other partners, Blue Bay has never looked back. Their store at The Well moved to Ballito Junction Mall, they relocated their Kramerville store to Pretoria, and added a new store in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, in 2018. Their entire manufacturing operation is based right here, in Shakashead, and Blue Bay handle the entire process from start to finish, from upholstery and aluminium powder coating to woodwork. They also offer a repair service, where clients can restore their damaged or old outdoor furniture. “Our focus is on quality,” says David. “You definitely get what you pay for. We also maintain an emphasis on continuously improving and
working towards perfection,” he adds. Now, with around 45 employees, this family operation is poised to become global, with the family busy establishing a distribution base in the United States, called Blu-Berry Outdoor. Innovation is also key, which is why every two years they travel to the impressive Spoga+Gafa outdoor show in Cologne, Germany, to keep track of trends and global markets. With Sam and David getting married on the 23 March, this family enterprise can only go from strength to strength.
stained glass is created, and where she still has a large portion of her ceramics operation, some of which has now moved to the new space at New Salt Rock City in Mount Richmore. After years of being a stay-at-home mother to four vibrant girls, 28 years ago she bought herself a kiln and a wheel and never looked back. The family had always holidayed in Ballito, and were familiar with the town long before leaving the Lowveld. As the daughters finished high school in the Lowveld, one by one they each made their way toward Ballito, where
they pursued their own businesses and careers in separate yet complementary industries. Tracy Joubert pursued interior design, Kate Armitage created a successful hair salon, which she has run in Ballito for the past nine years, while Megan Paterson joined her sister in her salon while studying beauty. Fourth sister Jennilee is a teacher at Crawford. Sharon made the move in June 2018 to join her girls in their new shared space, Re-Freshed Designs; a creative hub centred around each of their strengths. The mixed-use space consists of Megan’s beauty salon where she offers manicures, pedicures, waxing, massages, professional make-up, facials and more using Decléor and the Italian luxury spa range Comfort Zone; Kate’s hair salon moved in (Kate is soon heading to Paris with L’Oréal Professional); Sharon’s ceramics are not only for sale and on display, but she offers hands-on classes and shares her expertise (look out for her upcoming moms and children group classes); and

Tracy’s interior design business is also based at Re-Freshed, offering small to large scale interior design work (her fabrics and furnishings are beautiful), as well as refurbishments, and even spatial redesigns to make the best of use of her clients’ spaces. Re-Freshed really is a one-stop shop, which is why it’s worth spending a day there; think ceramics lessons followed by massages and nails, ending off your day feeling ‘refreshed’ with a new hairstyle. OUT & ABOUT
L
IFE in KZN is just bursting with fun opportunities, and February has been a particularly busy month.
The aQuelle Midmar Mile and the Dusi are two world famous events held in February, and have had water lovers from around the province – and the world in fact either polishing their swimming skills so they don’t have the embarrassment of being hauled out the water by one of the many ‘’potential-drowner-spotters” at Midmar – or doing strength training and fine-tuning their paddling skills so they make it all the way canoeing the Dusi. For the second year running, decked out in my cow cozzie I joined the herd; over 400 Cows to be exact – to swim the aQuelle Midmar Mile to raise awareness and funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA. The Midmar swim is one of the biggest events in the KZN CHOC Cow calendar, where funds raised reach approximately R650,000 year on year.
PR guru Glenda Thompson is never far from a soirée. She gives Life & Style readers the inside scoop on the North Coast’s social calendar.
My future son-in-law, Mel Lawrence, who was a champion swimmer in his day and is now the Ashton club coach, swam as well, and we met up with other locals at the dam, including the fit and gorgeous Sarah Swainson, who got out of the water looking as though she had just stepped off the cover of Women’s Health! “For the second year running, decked out in my cow cozzie, I joined the herd; over 400 Cows to be exact, to swim the aQuelle Midmar Mile to raise awareness and funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA.”
Incidentally, if you’re keen on joining the Cows next year, contact durbsdaisy@thecows.co.za and join us at Thompson’s Bay pool for pre-Midmar warm ups. You have the whole year to practise your strokes! Entrepreneurs arguably make up the backbone of the South African economy, and February saw the start of monthly workshops for fledgling entrepreneurs
at Hirsch’s Training Centre at their Umhlanga Rocks store. The idea was to bring in various experts in their field, and as a member of the team who put together the finer details of this event, I was delighted with the response, both from candidates and from successful women in the KZN business community who gave up their time as speakers. The talks were anchored by ActionCOACH’S business coach Marlene Powell who has, over the last 12 years, helped many local businesses to get to the next level, and multi-award winning business woman Margaret Hirsch, who is regularly called on for advice by people wanting to start their own business. Valentine’s Day saw a gathering of local businesswomen popping along to a networking morning in Ballito to find out how they could arrange their work space for maximum productivity, with award-winning interior decorator Philippa Courtenay from Re-inspire pointing out that, “The environment in which we work has a tremendous impact on our productivity. Whether your work area is for one person or a hundred people, it must be functional and affordable.”

GETTING TO KNOW…
B
ALLITO’S GERALD WELLS salon has a team of highly qualified stylists, with international experience. This month, we get to know Bernice Purdon.
Bernice opened her first salon at the tender age of 20 and has enjoyed a successful 37-year career since. Originally from Sandton in Johannesburg, she’s enjoyed seeing the incredible growth in Ballito over the past 12 years since moving here. “Moving to Ballito has been very exciting,” adds Bernice. During her studies, she attended hair-cutting courses in London, at the famous Vidal Sassoon and Jingles. Bernice joined the Gerald Wells team one year ago, and hasn’t looked back since. “The clients just love the location and feel of our salon,” adds Bernice. “I embrace my work, whether it’s cutting or colouring – no two days are ever the same. Fashions are changing all the time and we strive to keep up with the trends,” she says. “My clients are much more than just my clients,” Bernice says. “We have an amazing connection that makes my day so special,” and for her, it’s really about
Although Philippa didn’t initially choose design as her first career choice, after a few years of having a successful practice as a registered dietician she decided to follow her passion and study interior design and has never looked back. Can you believe she was on Top Billing twice last year for her outstanding work? We certainly have a talented pool of women right here on our doorstep. A regular event on my calendar is the fun, inspiring WOW (Women of Worth) dinners hosted by Margaret Hirsch. The February event saw 25 of us gathering to share ideas on everything, from how to help Africa solve its waste problem (Ballito’s award winning business woman, Patricia Schroeder gave an incredible presentation on toxic waste on her recent visit to Ghana) to solving minor business problems, and even Climbing Mount Kenya!
If you have any events happening in your neck of the woods, let Glenda know and she’ll join in the fun for Life & Style’s ‘Out and About’. Email her on gjthomo@gmail.com.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Our resident DIY and décor guru, Allen Petrie, schools us on the art of ‘cocooning’.
P
t
EOPLE are always saying that times have changed and that things aren’t as they used to be. Indeed they have, and much of it has to do with the world in which we find ourselves. Gone are the open front lawns and children playing in the streets. Our concerns about security for our families and loved ones have driven us to fortify our homes with fences, walls and security beams. We sometimes hear conversations about how homes have become like fortresses and have lost their charm.
DECOR 9 Catc Allen h l the A ive on fterno Drive o on 88 n F Wedn M esday s at 4pm
Well, all is not lost. The notion that we should be more vigilant shouldn’t prevent us from having homes we love and that we love spending time in. Cocooning is certainly a descriptive word and it conjures up images of warmth, comfort and safety. So, the question is; how do we create ‘cocoons’ in our homes? More importantly, in this economic climate, how do we do this without blowing the budget?
OPEN UP It seems counterintuitive to suggest opening up one’s home whilst trying to ‘cocoon’. By opening up your home, you’re creating space where there was previously none and your home feels bigger, more spacious and welcoming. This doesn’t mean you have to break out the sledgehammer and smash out walls. It may be as simple as rearranging the furniture, putting mirrors on darker walls to create the illusion of space and light, or changing some soft furnishings. NOT ALL BEAUTY LIES WITHIN The outside of your home is as important as the inside. In KZN, where the weather is far more forgiving than other parts of SA, why not take advantage of your outside space and make it comfortable and welcoming? Create a sanctuary in your garden, if you have one. Have spaces for play, rest, and for entertaining. INSIDE OUT AND OUTSIDE IN Bring elements from outside into your home and vice versa. The entire place will feel bigger. Modern, weather resistant fabrics make it possible to take soft furnishings outside without having to be concerned about fading, mould etc. Conversely, bringing plants indoors creates a welcoming, peaceful setting that makes cocooning simple. COLOUR IS KEY Don’t be afraid of colour. Use colour, not only on painted surfaces but experiment with wallpaper. You’ll be amazed at what’s available from leading wallpaper and fabric houses. Paint technology is so advanced that there is a solution for every possible problem. Colours create the right mood, whether it’s warmth you’re looking for or serenity. SHINE A LIGHT Lighting can play a big role in creating accent areas inside and outside your home. Both natural and artificial light, in the right balance, can really set the tone for your sanctuary.
TOP COCOONING TIPS • Unclutter by selling your old stuff. Use
the money to buy select décor items that you love • Rearrange your furniture to create space. You’ll be amazed at how you can transform your home • Get a Weber, gas, or wood braai and use them, often. Entertaining outside is one of the best ways for you and your friends to enjoy your space. • Get a hammock, hanging chair or a bench for your garden. Make it a space to kick off your shoes and unwind. • Mirrors are a versatile and costeffective way to create the illusion of space. • Soft furnishings like colourful throws and cushions for interior and exterior use make an instant impact. Nothing could be simpler or cost effective.
Cocooning isn’t all about locking yourself up in your home and becoming insular. In fact, it should be the opposite. Its about making your space welcoming and open. It’s about making your space one in which your family and friends feel comfortable, peaceful and welcome.

10 GENERAL INTEREST
This month we tried
Mazavaroo
In need of a spicy kick this month, we went on the hunt for this legendary Mauritian relish
THE BATTLE OF THE BILLS Here’s a handy breakdown of how to manage your municipal account. (You’re welcome!)
I
F you own a house or property and have access to electricity, water and waste removal services, you should receive a monthly bill from your municipality for these services, as well as the taxes on your property. While no two municipalities issue identical bills or use the same terminology, the basic information is the same.
THE FIVE MAIN CHARGES ON YOUR BILL ARE: •Water – a tariff per kl is charged based on your metered water consumption. If you are on pre-paid, there will be no charge. •Sewerage or waste water. •Electricity – if you are on a metered account, you will receive a charge for this based on how much electricity used. If you are on pre-paid, there will be no charge. •Refuse removal of solid waste. •Rates and Taxes, also called assessment rates. The account will give you a detailed breakdown of the total amounts payable including: •Basic services, also called availability charges, which are a fixed amount charged to recoup costs of delivering water, electricity and sewer connections to your property. •Itemised consumption and adjustments for water, sanitation and refuse collection - Water is charged based on how much you use. If you are on prepaid electricity there will be no charge. •Assessment rates also known as rates and taxes The income generated by the levying of assessment rates is used by your municipality to provide services such as libraries, parks, sports fields, roads, infrastructure etc. All property owners must pay rates and taxes when they become the registered owner, regardless of whether you live there or not. It is your responsibility to open an account in your name and pay a deposit. Make sure that you provide the
correct billing address, and if you do not receive the statement, you need to rectify this. Remember to pay an amount every month even if you have not received your account. What happens on a property bought off plan at registration? •Rates and taxes - On a new property that is built off plan, there are two ways that council will levy rates and taxes. If at the time of registration of the property in your name, the council has not yet completed the property evaluations, you will be charged a ‘vacant land tariff’. Once the council completes the valuations, you will be switched to the residential tariff. At this point the council will do a ‘rates adjustment’ and work out the difference between what you paid under the vacant land tariff versus what you should have paid under the residential rate. Typically, if you were paying the higher vacant land tariff you will receive a refund or credit. You will also receive a small assessment rebate which all property owners receive – the amount varies. •Availability charges for water, electricity and sewerage connections - You will be charged for services that have been ‘connected’ to your property. These are known as basic service or availability charges and are a fixed rate. Once your water meters are installed these charges switch to a metered consumption and you will no longer be charged a basic fee. If the council continued to charge you for the basic charges after your water meter was installed, they will revert back to the installation date of your meter, reverse the basic charges and charge you for consumption. Take the time to study your account and make use of your local council’s support line or website for assistance. This is intended as an advisory guide only and does not replace the guidance provided by your local council.
T
HERE is a strongMauritian culinary tradition on the North Coast. The Mauritian sugar farming families that settled here brought with them the tastes and flavours from home, one of the most exciting being Mazavaroo. It’s a relish; a spicy combination of chillies, ginger, garlic and other less obvious secrets that adds a magnificent kick to just about anything.
Recipes vary and
while there are a few outlets on the North Coast that stock a range of home-made Mazavaroos, there is one that we have become addicted to in the nicest possible way. It’s made by Kerry Jordan in her traditional kitchen and is true to a secret recipe that she acquired years ago and has faithfully reproduced ever since. Look out for the plain little glass bottle with a ceramic medallion – that’s the one!
You’ll find it at Home Grown in the Lifestyle Centre Market and a few other outlets. It makes a super uniquely North Coast gift but you’ll probably want to keep it for yourself – it’s that good!

MAN OF THE WORLD If Katmandu restaurant’s intent is to showcase world food, then they couldn’t have hoped for a better head chef than Steven La Fountain. He’s of French origin, has lived all over the world from Frankfurt to Vermont, married a KZNborn South African, and has a palate for all cuisines. He chatted to Melanie Reeder-Powell.
S
TEVEN La Fountain meets with us under the shady boughs of Katmandu’s spectacular outdoor space on a balmy Ballito day at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.
He and his team are fresh off the previous evening’s Valentine’s Day rush, as well as the re-launch of their newly tweaked menu, which Steven has refined to ensure a more streamlined process for his chefs. In a mixed-use space that can currently seat around 270 people, with the potential for larger functions, streamlining and planning is key. I’ve interviewed many a chef in my career, and broadly speaking there are usually two types; a high-energy, highprofile personality; or the under-theradar, slightly quieter authority figure, who knows what’s expected and gets on with it. Steven seems to be the latter. It’s been three months since Steven took over the helm of Katmandu, jumping in during December, which as all locals will know takes nerves of steel. Luckily, Steven is no ordinary chef. He served as a United States Marine for “six years, two months and 40 days” he states unequivocally, making it clear he has a penchant for precision. His father was an air force man, and Steven’s childhood was marked by a move to Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was stationed, before moving on to Connecticut, California, and Vermont. Steven followed suit as a young man, but preferred to rise through the ranks the old-fashioned way in the military, adding jokingly that he wasn’t “the Top Gun type”. “I toured in Afghanistan, and Iraq, as well as an 18-month tour in Somalia,” he explains, and while the military was to be his career of choice, after an incident in Somalia he decided enough was enough. He transitioned into law enforcement of a different kind, and became a police officer in New York, based in lower Manhattan, then Vermont for two years. Circumstance then intervened and Steven’s career did an about turn. His family owned two restaurants, one of which was a steak house, and it was here that their executive chef took Steven under his wing, training him in knife skills and other culinary
basics. He apprenticed for three months, before leaving law enforcement entirely, and heading to The CIA for four years. “That’s The Culinary Institute of America,” he laughs, “not the other CIA.” I would have believed him either way. It was in Vermont where Steven met his now wife of 10 years, Rashika, a South African from Pietermaritzburg, who was also in the hospitality industry at the time. After Rashika gave birth to their son, her mother flew to the US to help with the baby. Steven marvelled at the special bond they had, and this seemed to play a role in their decision to move to South Africa. “I’ve now been a resident of eight years, four months and 10 days,” he states, again displaying his head for specifics. His career has since taken him from Polokwane, to Sandton (where he worked as executive sous chef at the famous Bull Run), and Umhlanga to Ballito. His friend and mentor, Steven Kruger, who he worked with at Beluga in Umhlanga, is also a stone’s throw away at 45 on Eat Street, the Lifestyle Centre’s other new eatery, revealing an even deeper sense of synergy to Steven’s new role. Rashika also has a degree in psychology from UNISA, but these days she has taken on the full-time hospitality management post as mother to their two children. “They are my life. They are what I live for,” adds Steven. His culinary preferences are as diverse as his travels. “Being of French origin I love French cuisine naturally, but I’m like a sponge,” he adds, listing Italian, Mediterranean and Indian foods as among his favourites. “I like to keep up with trends, but my main passion is training students.” When in Sandton, he took sixmonths of sign language lessons, and trained deaf students in culinary skills. “One of my chefs went on to become chef of the year,” adds Steven, and it’s clear that this is truly where his heart lies. “I like individuals who are willing to learn,” he says, adding that “being a

chef is not about being in the spotlight - I want the rest of my staff to enjoy the light with me.” Just before I leave him to get on with his Friday evening prep work, it occurs to me that Steven is the perfect
brand ambassador for Katmandu. His life’s travel, encounters, and his family (by marriage and otherwise), are the epitome of the post-modern human – an amalgam of food and cultures that is all the richer for these experiences.

ARMIN KLIE – MEET THE VOICE Luckily for us, the North Coast’s favourite blues, rock and country aficionado survived being a farmer, a builder, and a film industry stuntman, just so he could bring us the sounds of Highway 88 every Thursday evening. to bring my music knowledge to the airwaves. I jumped at the opportunity and four years later it’s still a treat for me to introduce the less common genres and artists to my audience.
1. How did you get into radio? I met Dave Charles (Life & Style newspaper and 88.0FM founder and general mnumzane) some years ago, and music was a common thread between us. When 88.0FM was about to be launched, Dave asked if I’d want
2. Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you. That would be telling! Ha ha! Well, I always wanted to be an investigative journalist, but life had other plans. Actually, life had quite a few hairbrained plans for me. I was in electronics, before being a farmer in Mpumalanga, after which I was a special-effects coordinator and a stuntman in the Cape Town film
industry for a few years. 3. Where are you from originally? I was born and bred in Kempton Park on the East Rand of Gauteng. It was a great place for us to grow up, like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, probably the last generation to do so. 4. What do you love about the North Coast? Apart from having so much in proximity (beaches and warm ocean waters, mountains, game reserves, music venues, and an array of restaurants etc.) I really like the slightly slower pace we enjoy here in this fastpaced, modern world. 5. Let’s talk music; what are you listening to right now, and fill us in on your favourites. I’ve been listening to and collecting music since I was a small boy, and have explored almost all genres. It’s hard to pick absolute favourites, but the curious
thing about music is that different genres and artists ‘speak to you’ at different times. Bob Dylan always seemed to be the default setting in my collection, but I keep adding new music to my collection which is quite vast. I enjoy rock, blues, country and folk music which I leave on ‘shuffle’ mode in the car or at home. 6. When you’re not on radio, what are you doing? I’ve owned a construction company for about 15 years, so my day-job is building houses and doing alterations and renovations to homes. Weekends are spent at home or on the beach with my wife Lisa, my son Jethro, and our dog Max. We also enjoy social life with friends, occasionally getting some instruments out and having a sing-song. The bushveld has a special place in our hearts too.

E have just completed a week-long testdrive of the new PEUGEOT 308 Allure, an elegant family hatch with the most connected and safest range of technology and styling enhancements yet. I am sure the technical info is fascinating, but we want to share with you the other stuff – like what it feels like to drive, how it improves your lifestyle, how it looks and how it makes you feel when you think about it.
Firstly, it looks good – really beautifully presented both outside and in. It is technologically seamless in the way it connects you to your digital surroundings too. The i-Cockpit of the new 308 Allure includes the Mirror Screen, which duplicates your smartphone on the vehicle’s large capacitive touchscreen. This is a triple-play system compatible with Mirrorlink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols. The touchscreen also offers rapid access to dual zone climate control, cruise control and all multi-media and entertainment functions. The new PEUGEOT 308 Allure is both modern and stylish in design whilst offering passengers comfort and refinement on the move. It handles like a dream too – plenty of power when you need it but as smooth as silk on the road. It’s got all of the tech like extended driver assistance giving you the latest-generation systems like driver Attention Alert, Advanced Breaking, Electronic Stability and Traction Control, Electronic brake force distribution, Emergency brake assist with emergency brake flashing hazard lights, automatic drive-away locking, central locking and dead locking, anti-theft alarm and super locking systems, and more to keep you and yours safe and happy. All of this plus exceptional fuel consumption of just 5.1 / 100km and an impressive top speed of 204km/h
THE ALL NEW PEUGEOT 308 IT’S SUPER !
makes the PEUGEOT 308 Allure the ideal car to zoot around town or enjoy long distance family adventures. So how does it make you feel? Well, we loved it. It’s luxurious without being too flashy and super comfortable for both driver and passengers with space for luggage and lovely sound system too. But the thought of returning it has left us feeling quite bereft.
If you have never considered owning a Peugeot, do yourself a favour and test drive the new 308. You’ll be so glad you did. Visit Peugeot Umhlanga, 15 Meridian Dr, Umhlanga Ridge, Umhlanga, or call 031 580 7900
