I

LOVE autumn on the North Coast. The sun is still out, but the oppressive heat starts to dissipate. (At least it should be by now – this heat seems endless.) The beaches are quieter (well, until Easter that is!), but if you’ve hit the ground running just like the Life & Style team has, you may already be feeling a little depleted.

For parents, the first term has already been and gone, and it’s right about now that you’re trying to dream up activities to keep the kids busy over March (by the way, we suggest Ballito Junction’s Slime Workshop, free to attend from 23-30 March, 11am-5pm daily – visit their Facebook page for more info.) Also, on the forefront of our thoughts, is our stand at Decorex. This year, Life & Style and 88.0FM are official media partners to this décor and lifestyle extravaganza that brings the best in global trendsetting concepts and products to KZN. Our friends at Greenhaus, Salt Rock Shopping Centre’s gorgeous décor and hardware store – who also happen to be master carpenters – are helping us dress our stand, and we can’t wait to reveal it to you! Pop in and say hi, and you could win a tailor-made R10 000 media package for you and your business from the Life & Style team. While we’re gearing up for all of this activity, and grappling with this seemingly endless summer heat, we’ll be the first to admit we’re feeling somewhat sluggish, which is why we

decided to become our own motivators, by compiling a month full of content that’s geared to lifting our spirits, and energy levels. Our favourite medical expert and all-round superhero, Dr Rosie Carey, addresses your fatigue from a GP’s point-of-view on page 8, while our wellness expert, dietician Kim Martin explains how to deal with chronic burnout from a nutritional perspective, on page 5. Tech guru Marc Forrest has rounded up his top picks of health and fitness apps to download to your Smartphone right now on page 4, and we have a superfood power bowl recipe for you on page 13, courtesy of The Digs Kitchen, straight from their scenic restaurant at Sugar Rush Park. On page 9, we also chat to two of the aerial acrobatic stars of the Big Top Rock production currently running at Durban’s Barnyard Theatre at Suncoast Casino. They fill us in on how they keep their incredible bodies tip-top through all the late-night shows, and physically demanding performances. Sound good? We thought so! So take a break with us, and enjoy your free copy of Life & Style. Until next time,

AJOZI is a familiar face in these parts: the ex- resident is truly a self-made musician after teaching himself guitar at the

After five years of working at a bank, he formalised his musical leanings by incorporating music into his studies at UKZN, and it seems as if the soulful singer/songwriter has never looked back. He’s the rare musician that breaks stereotypes, who defies public expectations of his sound, and he’s admitted in the past to relishing the surprise. Now adept at guitar, keys, and drums, he’s noted in the past as being influenced by a wide range of artists, from Janet Jackson to Daft Punk, but his indie folk sound has found a niche of its own. He’s enjoyed collaborations and opening performances with the likes of Gangs of Ballet, Mango Groove, Matthew Mole, and international star, Yoav. His Christian faith is very much apart of his artistry, and while he’s vocal about it, from his tattoos to his lyrics, his messages are ultimately universal in theme, spreading the idea that we are all deserving of love, and that we share the same insecurities. In 2013, he released his first EP, ‘Marvelous Light’. The album made it to number nine overall on the South African iTunes chart and number one in the singer/songwriter category. His single, ‘The River’, was play-listed on radio stations across SA, and his debut album ‘Fire’ was nominated for a South African Music Award. This month, Majozi is headed back to Salt Rock from his base in Cape Town, in aid of local little girl Catie Mallandain, who was diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the

skull. Catie’s treatment is ongoing, with heavy costs involved to help her lead as happy a life as possible, and Majozi’s sense of support for his community is something that means a lot to him. We caught up with him in the runup to his local gig: Q: What do you miss most about the North Coast? A: The people, the beach, bunny chows and the fauna. Q: What don’t you miss? A: The humidity. So not used to it when I go back now!

Music man

KZN-born Nhlanla Majozi is coming home to play a once-off charity gig this month. We caught up with the indie-folk muso, who’s shaking up the airwaves with his feel-good sound.

Q: What’s on your personal playlist right now? A: I’ve actually been listening to old pop punk songs from my youth and reminiscing about the old days of when I used to skateboard around. I’ve also been really into podcasts lately. I guess I just love hearing people talk.

Q: How did you get involved in ‘Collecting for Catie’? A: I’m good friends with the family and that community as a whole means a lot to me, so any way I can help I will always be there. I love them all so much. Catie is

adorable and I really want to do my part for her. Q: What’s next for Majozi? A: Musically, there are a few things that aren’t set in stone, but hopefully you’ll hear of some exciting stuff soon. Personally, so many exciting things. I’m just enjoying life as much as I can, and working hard while doing that.

Join Majozi on the Deck at Linc Church, 15 March from 5pm. Tickets are limited, and cost R50 and R20 (for children), available from Linc Church. If you’d like to help Catie, visit the Collecting for Catie Facebook page. Download Majozi’s latest self-titled album on Spotify or iTunes (or on most streaming services).

But while the figurative rear view mirror may be problematic, I am a huge believer in judicious use of the literal thing when operating any mode of transport. If you know what’s coming up behind you, there is far less chance of becoming a casualty to the lunatic fringe that you have to share the road with. One of the cardinal rules for better driving is that you should look in your rear view mirror every five to eight seconds to stay conscious of what is happening behind you. Also, before you

DRAFT BYLAW ON PROBLEM BUILDINGS

The fitness industry has changed in the last couple of years with the advent of wearable technology. Gone are the days of sporting a flashy watch; these days you’re more likely to see men and women wearing fitness and/or smart watches. Garmin, Fitbit and Apple have taken the top ranks of the market in this ever-growing industry, with many of the health insurance companies also climbing on the bandwagon, offering rewards for collecting data with these devices. There are also a multitude of apps available across a number of devices, allowing you to keep your health and mind in check These are just a few of the many available apps across the various app stores, but I wanted to share these four specifically as I have been using them over the last six months in a personal journey I have taken to get fitter, stronger and more mindful.

BOUNCE BACK FROM BURNOUT

greens, wholegrains and vegetables, seeds and shellfish, and red fruits and vegetables respectively. Sometimes foods can be enough, but more often than not you need supplements to boost your nutrient levels therapeutically.

2. Digestive Support

Another nasty side effect of chronic stress is indigestion. You may want to consider supplementing with betaine hydrochloric acid (HCL) or digestive enzymes temporarily to address this.

3. Adaptogens

Finally, there are a group of herbs that work specifically on the stress pathway to bring hormones back into balance. They are known as Adaptogens and can be really helpful to heal your body from burnout. Some of the most beneficial herbs include Rhodiola Rosea, Ashwagandha, Maca, Reishi and Chaga, and Siberian Ginseng.

So many of us are trapped in a cycle of stress, fatigue and anxiety. Dietician Kim Martin explains how you can restore the balance.

T

here’s a drive in many of us that tells us to keep going, even to the point of burnout, when we are working towards our goals. Perhaps societal pressures are to blame, but we seem to believe that pushing harder is the only way to truly succeed in life. It’s no wonder more of us are over-stressed, burnt out, and on the brink of collapse. Here are some solutions to help you bounce back from burnout.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE BURNOUT?

Burnout is defined by the World Psychiatry Journal as “… a psychological syndrome emerging as a prolonged response to chronic interpersonal stressors on the job. The three key dimensions of this response are overwhelming exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and detachment from the job, and a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment.”

Look out for the following signs & symptoms:

- Excessive fatigue despite sleeping your normal amount - Spending more time alone than normal/avoiding social situations more than usual - Feeling overwhelmed/fearful/anxious/ self-doubting and not being able to shake it off - Feelings of brain fog/inability to focus on work tasks - Experiencing panic attacks, dizziness, or increased heart rate There are many more symptoms that vary from person to person, but the above are red flags that steps urgently need to be taken.

HEALING THROUGH FOOD

Burnout is a symptom of chronic stress. It’s almost as though we’ve had our brains signalling that we are stressed for so long, that our bodies get revved up before eventually going into total shutdown.

1. Slow/gentle carbohydrates

Blood sugar balance goes out the window in times of stress due to the over-secretion of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol leads to a spike in blood sugar, which in turn leads to a large insulin secretion. The insulin then

works to rapidly remove the excess sugar from the blood stream, thus dropping our blood sugar to very low amounts in a seesaw effect. This effect is what triggers “emotional eating” or sugar cravings. In order to combat this, we need to eat foods that are considered low glycaemic index (low-GI). This means avoiding refined sugars, white flour products, alcohol, and fruit juice. Focus on getting your carbohydrates from fiber-rich, wholegrain sources

“If you are struggling with chronic stress, caffeine can be the equivalent of adding fuel to the fire, because it is a stimulant.” and from whole fruits and vegetables to balance your blood sugar. Adding a source of protein and/or healthy fats (like avocado) to your meal will also slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream.

BOUNCING BACK

the afternoon and see if it makes a difference. Some delicious alternatives would be teas such as chamomile and chai, coconut water, kombucha, or chicory coffee.

SUPPLEMENTS FOR BURNOUT 1. Reparative Nutrients

Supplements and diet changes will make a huge difference in terms of how your body copes with the stress, however lifestyle changes are essential. Make sure that you protect your sleep, and start carving out time in your day for stress-relieving habits such as gentle exercise. Remember the analogy on flights, that you need to strap on your own oxygen mask before helping others? This is true for all aspects of our health; if you aren’t taking care of yourself, you’re not able to give your best to your work or to your loved ones.

During periods of high stress, our bodies can go into hyper-drive and burn through our nutrient stores, leaving us depleted and unable to go into repair mode. Some of these readily-depleted nutrients include magnesium, B vitamins, zinc, and vitamin C. You can get these through foods such as leafy

2. Omega-3 rich foods

Healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids will help with blood sugar balance, as well memory and overall cognitive function. Omega-3 fatty acids are also associated with mood benefits. These powerful nutrients have been linked to reduced depression and anxiety symptoms, and overall improved feelings of wellbeing. We should all aim to have a serving of fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, cod, herring, or anchovies) two to three times weekly. If you are vegan, you can get omega-3 fatty acids from chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, or walnuts. Then if you are still not able to eat the above, consider an omega-3 supplement.

3. Skip the caffeine (even if only temporarily)

I know, coffee is life! However, it will do you the world of good to give it a break for a while if you have burnout. If you are struggling with chronic stress, caffeine can be the equivalent of adding fuel to the fire because it is a stimulant. If you are already facing anxiety or highstress, the caffeine may rev you up even more. Some people are affected more than others when it comes to caffeine. In fact, there is some evidence to show that caffeine helps with depression, but this may only be the case for genetically “fast metabolisers” of coffee and not the average person. If you are struggling with insomnia, skip the caffeine in

SIZA WATER TURNS OVER A NEW LEAF

OUR NEW LOGO

Siza Water is pleased to introduce its new company logo, following the change of ownership from Sembcorp Industries to a South African owned company, trading as South African Water Works (SAWW). Siza Water is now a proudly South African company. The graphic and fonts of the new logo were strategically chosen to communicate the core values of SAWW and its subsidiaries – PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENT and PRODUCT

– into one concise symbol. The logo has a fluid motion that mimics flowing water and abstract impressions of people striving for greater heights. The colours and concentric shapes

that form the water droplet, add energy to the logo while the font makes a bold statement to SAWW’s position as a leading water services provider.

SAWW brings significant financial and operational expertise to Siza Water, backed by proven experience and a strong track record as trusted, long-term investors in critical infrastructure, growing excellent businesses and maintaining good relationships with staff, customers, regulators and other stakeholders. The new shareholders in SAWW are well established businesses with a rich heritage and history. The change of shareholding has not and will not impact on Siza Water’s ability to deliver services to our customers. Siza Water will continue to render services in terms of its concession contract with the iLembe District Municipality and such terms remain unaltered. The purchase of the Sembcorp shareholding was spearheaded by the current minority shareholder of Siza Water, who is familiar with the company’s operations,

thereby maintaining the knowledge base at a strategic level. The existing management team will continue performing their role under the new shareholders in SAWW to ensure that quality service delivery is assured. SAWW is committed to the environmentally conscious, responsible, long-term ownership and further development of Siza Water. Ronel Nel

MOOIMAAK

The transformation

MAKEOVERS: Ronel Nel

A

BUSY seamstress, Ronel Nel required a certain amount of confidence to work with the public each day. Thing is, she was being teased about her wrinkles as well as her teeth and it became the motivating factor for her to participate in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show.

Fortunately, the Skin Renewal team led by Dr. Graham Duncombe and therapist Liza Schoeman gave Ronel a series of treatments that smoothed out her wrinkles and she got a smile makeover thanks to brilliant dentist Dr JJ Serfontein.

SMOOTH OPERATOR

The wrinkles on the upper half of Ronel’s face were treated using botulinum toxin and strategically-placed Silhouette Soft threads that gave her a gentle brow lift and opened up her eyes. Dr. Graham then used two lasers on her entire face - Limelight and Laser Genesis - to instantly tighten her skin while encouraging the growth of more collagen over time.

A NEW NOSE

Ronel’s slightly crooked nose was corrected via a 3D non-surgical rhinoplasty. Hyaluronic acid filler was injected into depressed areas to fill them out and create a smoother-looking profile while a special PDO thread called the broom straightened the bridge. The result was a much straighter looking nose - no knives required!

Notice Ronel’s radiance? She was given microdermabrasion treatments that involved using a pen-like machine to blow a stream of micro-fine crystals across the surface of the skin to gently polish it. ‘I really enjoyed these treatments,’ said Ronel. ‘I could see the improvement in my skin’s texture and overall appearance. They definitely renewed its glow!’

This month we tried Do you know where your lymph nodes are, or what they do? Most of us don’t! Our ed, Melanie Reeder-Powell – never one to say ‘no’ to some TLC – headed to the therapy rooms of registered professional Maxine Blane to discover a whole new world of wellness.

T

RUE lymph drainage is a gentle process, and one you can facilitate on your own.

“The lymph system is essentially the immune system,” explains Maxine, who is a certified lymphoedema and wound care therapist and private nurse practitioner. Among Maxine’s patients are women with breast cancer and post-operative

WHO CAN BENEFIT? ANYONE CAN BENEFIT FROM LYMPH DRAINAGE, INCLUDING: -Post-operative patients (knee replacements, hysterectomies, post-Caesarian section) -Those who suffer from chronic, recurrent infections, as it boosts a weak immune system. -Frequent international flyers, or the elderly suffering from swollen lower limbs, ankles and feet. -Post breast cancer mastectomy patients -Post prostate cancer patients

patients who experience inflammation, but the therapy can be hugely beneficial for many people. Lymph is a clear fluid present throughout your body, containing primary immune cells. It travels through bodily tissues and arteries ‘cleansing’ them, and finally passing through the lymph nodes. “Lymph drainage assists with draining waste products from body tissues, reduces congestion and inflammation around sites of trauma, reduces congestion post removal of lymph nodes and radiotherapy in cancer patients, balances body fluids, and generally revitalises the body and assists in more restful sleep,” explains Maxine. “The true discoverer of the lymphatic system was a 17th Century Swedish anatomist, Olauf Rudbeck, and in the early 1930's the Danish masseur Dr. Emil Vodder developed a type of lymph drainage massage, entitling it ‘Manual Lymph Drainage ad modum Vodder’,” Maxine adds. “His massage consisted of a unique system of stationary circle strokes, distinguished from Swedish massage

by the fact that the hands neither slide over, nor rub the skin.” Maxine is thorough in her explanation of what she’s doing, and how to do it. (You’ll even have some homework.) The process is gentle, and while most massage forms will stimulate the lymphatic system in some way, this method is very specific, and feels more like a pulling sensation. Maxine uses the flat part of her fingertips, drawing the lymph fluid through the valve by pressing gently

across the body, including your tummy, groin area, sides of the torso, the back, the inside of the arms, and the face. She encourages a session of deep breathing, where she’ll work on certain parts of the tummy. While she’s working, you’ll experience a few sensations; some may feel mucous draining down the back of the throat, some may feel pins and needles, but she adds, “it should never be painful; it is a gentle massage therapy.”

PRACTICAL PICK-ME-UPS Feeling flat? Dr Rosie Carey addresses your fatigue

S

INCE this month’s topic is all about energy, I thought that I would explore some of the causes of fatigue and how to increase your energy levels. There are a few lucky people who seem to have endless energy, but most of us experience fatigue in some form. Fatigue can range from a simple dip in energy in the late afternoon, to debilitating fatigue that makes even getting out of bed in the morning seem impossible. If you can relate to either of these forms of fatigue (or anywhere along the fatigue spectrum) take a look at the following causes of fatigue and how to manage them.

BLOOD SUGAR DIPS

One of the most common causes of fatigue, especially that tiredness that sets in around 4pm, is a blood sugar dip. Ironically, the way that we try and fix a drop in blood sugar is usually by grabbing a chocolate or Coke or some other form of instant energy, which just perpetuates the cycle of fatigue as soon as that sugar is out of our blood stream. The way to avoid this is to make sure that you eat balanced meals containing protein, fats, and carbohydrates. If you do start experiencing a bit of fatigue in the afternoon, snack on something that contains protein or fat (some fruit and plain yoghurt or a handful of nuts and

Meet

the

dried fruits are good options). Keeping your blood sugar levels as stable as possible goes a long way towards reducing fatigue, so avoid any sugars or refined foods.

POOR SLEEP

Not sleeping well at night causes tiredness. I’m stating the obvious, but it’s actually more complicated. Not getting enough sleep at night doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re wandering around the house at 1am. You may be ‘sleeping’ but your sleep is of poor quality. Sleep apnoea, for example, causes people to wake up multiple

“Vitamin drips – infusions of various vitamins and minerals given intravenously – are very popular at the moment and I have seen them work wonders…” times at night, interrupting the sleep cycle, without the sufferer necessarily remembering the waking. If you’re suffering from fatigue, make sure that you are getting a good night’s sleep (this might require actively addressing your sleep hygiene and possibly even spending a night at a sleep clinic).

ILLNESSES

There are multiple medical causes of fatigue and if you have ruled out

Team

at

poor diet or poor sleep, it may be time to pay your local GP a visit. Some examples of medical conditions that commonly cause fatigue are low blood pressure, anaemia, underactive thyroid, depression, low vitamin-D levels, Epstein-Barr virus (glandular fever) and coxsackie virus. These need to be diagnosed by a doctor and managed accordingly. Combating fatigue effectively requires finding out the cause of the fatigue and treating that, but what do you do when you can’t treat the cause? New moms, I’m talking to you (also, those people who work crazy hours or who are suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, or who are in their peak month of Comrades training). There are some pick-me-ups that do give you a bit of a boost. • Caffeine is often frowned upon, but it does give you a lift and hasn’t been shown to be harmful in moderation. • Neurobion injections are intramuscular injections of vitamin B that help restore energy levels and are available at most pharmacies with a script. • Vitamin drips – infusions of various vitamins and minerals given intravenously – are very popular at the moment and I have seen them work wonders in increasing energy levels in people struggling with fatigue. They are relatively quick and simple to administer and are generally safe as long as they are administered in a medical facility by adequately trained

nurses or doctors. Fatigue is a complicated and sometimes debilitating condition and needs to be investigated properly to be managed properly, however, simply eating well and sleeping well will go a long way towards reducing most forms of fatigue.

FLYING HIGH

Sam Kotze and Chivonne Naude are acrobats, dancers, aerial artists and fearless performers currently rocking Suncoast Casino’s Barnyard Theatre. We chatted to them as they show us the, (ahem), ropes. Chivonne Naude

With caring, supportive parents, a twin sister, and older brother, Chivonne Naude admits to having the perfect support system for whatever path her life was destined to take. She was always “either upside down, painting, or somewhere in the kitchen.” Interestingly, it was the “upside down” part that was to become her choice of career. After 10 years as a gymnast, Chivonne dabbled in dancing, but it was the pole bug that really bit, following which she discovered the gorgeous acrobatics of aerial silks. Presumably, it was while she was gliding through the air wound around a scrap of fabric that her dream of being upside down was truly realised. Now, Chivonne is a professional performer, currently under contract with the show Big Top Rock at The Barnyard Theatre at Suncoast Casino. The life of a performer too is a bit upside down, with late nights

and intensive focus on their physical wellbeing. “I typically start my day with a midmorning training session, after which I’ll run errands. Some afternoons I teach art, and then I usually get dinner ready for my partner. At around 5pm I start getting ready for the evening's work; hair, make-up, and travelling to various theatres. I make sure that I am at the venue about 90 minutes prior to the show to allow for 45-minutes of stretching and getting ready. A work day usually ends with me getting home anywhere between 11pm and 12am.” While she’s not pedantic about her diet, she does have to watch what she eats. “I usually eat relatively healthily despite a slight pizza addiction! It will change according to my performance schedule,” she adds. “When I am performing a lot, I consume more protein for muscle

recovery; superfoods as well as carbs. I train five to six days a week depending on what I am training for. When training for competitions I will train on the pole every day, followed by strength training and flexibility. At the moment when I perform every day I will train at the gym during the day (mostly cardio and some functional training), and I love to go for trail runs whenever possible.” Chivonne takes Slow-Mag (a magnesium supplement that helps with muscle cramps and fatigue), and “when the performance schedule is very hectic I will take Glutamine for muscle recovery.”

Sam Kotze Welkom-born Sam Kotze laughs that, “After my ballet teacher suggested my head stands and rolly pollys wouldn't work for the ballet adjudicators, I fell in love with acrobatics, modern, and later, freestyle dancing starting at the age of four.” She started performing professionally in 2002, from Sun City to Cruise Liners and Vegas, and even South Africa’s famed Madame Zingara. But Sam’s career wasn’t without struggle: “In high school I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and I had to wear a back brace for 15-18 hours a day for three years,” she explains. Her doctors wanted to operate, inserting a rod into her back, but her mom refused. This decision was to dictate the direction of her daughter’s professional life. “She wanted a second opinion, and the back brace was my next best option,” explains Sam.

“Today, I still have scoliosis because I did not have the corrective surgery, but because I am fully grown and still very strong, the chances of the scoliosis

worsening are slim. If I had the surgery, I would not be able to bend my back like I do.” Her repertoire now includes silks, liras (an acrobatic hoop), Spanish web (cloth covered ropes for aerial performances), hand balance, sphere, hammock, perch and pole.

“I am a qualified acrobatic, freestyle and disco coach so I teach full time when I’m home. When we are travelling I find more time for me. I work on things I need to improve on, for example flexibility. My training schedule varies according to the performance schedules. I stretch every performance day and this normally happens closer to show time. Some days I swim, some days I skip and some days I will focus on strength and balance training.” Keeping her body in shape means Sam also has to listen to it. “I eat like a bird; all day but small quantities. I have never been a big eater but generally eat what I crave. If we have a very hectic schedule I crave more carbs and I go with that. I don’t avoid any foods in particular and have a protein shake on performance days. I take magnesium every day.”

WALK THE TALK Kate Lawrie works wonders at her BodyTalk practice, but how does this integrative, holistic therapy help us be healthier, and happier people?

B

ODYTALK is a unique healthcare system that helps you to cope with and manage your stress levels. It is a simple, safe and effective form of therapy that balances the body on all levels, physically, mentally and emotionally, awakening and restoring the body's own natural healing abilities.

BodyTalk is healthcare that understands the psychology of the body and the influence it has on your health. Rather than focusing on the symptom, BodyTalk finds the hidden causes of illness by looking at physical, emotional and environmental factors. The whole person and their story is considered, using the entire context of their life to improve their health, providing ongoing improvements rather than short-term symptomatic relief. A BodyTalk session is very gentle, noninvasive and healing. During a session, a form of neuromuscular feedback is used to connect with the body and locate where the imbalances

are. Balance is restored via a gentle method of ‘tapping’. It can be difficult to feel uncomfortable, painful emotions such as anger, anxiety, fear, grief, loneliness and sadness. There is a tendency to avoid them and ‘numb out’ in various ways, such as popping pills or over indulging in food or alcohol, or mindless scrolling through social media; anything to fill the void. However, by blocking painful emotions you are also blocking your potential to feel positive emotions. BodyTalk helps you to navigate life's curve balls, allowing you to experience the full spectrum, which enables you to live life at your optimum. BodyTalk is beneficial for everyone, of any age. BodyTalk can help with stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, emotional challenges, digestive problems, aches & pains, allergies, migraines, and overall wellbeing.

MVELO ZULU – BEHIN D THE SO UN D DESK Meet 88FM’s mixing maestro, the soulful sound engineer behind the heart of Ballito; and in 3… 2… 1… cue interview!

Q: Tell us a bit about your background, and how you got into radio? A: As a result of a mobile family I was put in a boarding school. My mother bought me a pocket stereo for my amusement, and it was then I developed the love of radio, or more specifically, of music. As I grew older, I developed a love of creating and manipulating the properties of sound, following which I studied a course in sound engineering and music production. Q: What do you love about your job? A: The fact that I get paid to listen to music (ha ha!), and the ability to create, or be a part of, what we call ‘the theatre of the mind’. Q: Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you. A: I have got excellent culinary skills, one would say I “Singh” in the kitchen! Q: Are you from the North Coast? If not,

where are you from originally? A: No, I am not, but I was born and bred in KwaZulu Natal, and have lived in various parts of the province, mainly Durban, Empangeni, and Pietermaritzburg. Q: What do you love about the North Coast? A: I have always admired the coast and the lifestyle it comes with it, from the wavy beaches, laid-back people, to not being questioned on why you’re regularly wearing a pair of shorts, slops and a bucket cap. Q: Let’s talk music; what are you listening to at the moment? Favourite musicians? Genres? A: I have an eclectic taste when it comes to music, but my first love was and is hip hop music. I regularly listen to artists such as Sjava, Black Coffee and AKA. Internationally, I am listening to some psychedelic rock, neo-soul and lo-fi hip

hop, such as Tame Impala, Erykah Badu, Alt J, Mild Orange and this month’s favourite, which is Feng Suave’s ‘Sink into the Floor’. Q: When you’re not in the station studio, what are you doing? A: I am an aspiring music producer and rap artist, currently part of a muso collective called the Sandmen. I spend most of my time creating and having fun at the studio. (Follow us on Facebook!)
