significance of the moment suddenly became clear to me. He spoke of forgiveness, the

value of always seeking the truth, and the healing power of dialogue. His words still resonate with me. There have been many more pivotal moments over the years, interviewing musicians, actors, health and wellness ‘gurus’ from Patrick Holford to Robin Sharma, and global icons like Jane Goodall (she was, by far, my favourite interview by the way.) More recently, another such moment was listening to Zelda la Grange speak in Ballito for the Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation. I had already interviewed her, if only via email, and I was so impressed with her considered responses. (Trust me, some ‘celebs’ couldn’t be bothered.) Within the first few minutes of her talk, it was clear that Zelda does not mince her words, nor does she shy away from who she once was, nor who she has become. “I voted ‘no’ in the referendum,” she bluntly admits during the opening moments of her talk. To her, and her family, Nelson Mandela was a terrorist, and it was to her father’s absolute horror that she accepted a job in the Presidency. The evolution of her relationship not only with Madiba, but with herself, her own politics, and her conservative family, had us all on the edge of our seats. It was moderately uncomfortable, riveting, but essential listening for any South African. Getting to really know people can take time, as can learning a life lesson, but sometimes, all it takes is a brief encounter; a snapshot into someone’s life. That’s what I hope to offer our readers on the pages of Life

& Style; brief encounters with incredible talents and personalities, creatives and pioneers, all of whom have a lesson to share, or a story to tell. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that a pop-up store, right here in Ballito, is a creative hub for not only a Durban-based French lighting designer, whose inspired organic work knocked my socks off, but the pop-up is also home to the work of Houtlander, the carpentry duo whose take on the Victorian loveseat just won them the Most Beautiful Object of the Year for 2019 at Design Indaba. It’s also our cover star this edition, and currently on exhibition in Milan. Catch our brand new shopping feature on page 5, where you can shop the popup’s contents. We truly spotlight the local property scene in this edition, and after speaking to the powers that be at Zimbali Lakes, we compiled a highlights package of their incredible development on page 15. It’s going to be a game changer. I also sat down with the Christmas Fair Fund committee, to find out how these powerhouse women are ‘fairing’ with the substantial funds they’ve collected, and you can read the breakdown of their tireless work on page 21. Previous Harcourts Dolphin Coast owners Ida & Neels du Plooy were more than just familiar faces to the community; they were friends to all. Now enjoying their first few weeks of retirement, they have left their beloved business in the capable hands of all-round nice guy, JP Pienaar, who brings with him decades of property experience, and a long-standing relationship with the Harcourts brand. Q: Tell us a bit about your background JP.

I was born in Pretoria, but grew up in Johannesburg, and after matriculating I completed my two-year military service in the SAP. I then spent a year in the US travelling and working between Florida and LA. On my return to SA in 1993 I opened a scuba diving school and met my wife to be and was married in 1994. I have two amazing boys, Jayden and Mitchel, who are currently studying in Stellenbosch. I have always been an entrepreneur by nature and have been involved in a few great businesses from import to manufacturing and supply. After reading the Robert Kiyosaki book Rich Dad Poor Dad my property passion started. After building offices and warehousing, I opened my first real estate business in Fourways, servicing gated estates, corporate rentals and marketing of new developments. We then moved to Shaw Park Eastern Cape and bought a small farm in Makhanda just outside Grahamstown in 2006, to be closer to our boys at St Andrews College. With my passion being in property, we saw an opportunity to start a real estate agency in Makhanda; we purchased the Franchise and founded Harcourts Grahamstown in 2010. After 20 years of marriage, our world was turned upside down in 2012 when my wife was diagnosed with cancer, and after a two-year struggle, she passed away in 2014. My boys moved onto Stellenbosch to study, and an opportunity came my way so I decided to expand my business to the Dolphin Coast. Q: How long have you been with Harcourts, and what is it about Harcourts that attracts you to the brand?

A: I am a master practitioner of real estate with NQF5, and as mentioned, I have been with Harcourts since 2010. The company has strong values and ethics, and is currently the fastest growing real estate company both nationally and internationally. LIGHTING UP THE PARKS Ashton College managing director Joe Erasmus shares the school’s exciting results and news for April.

HIS is the term Ashton International College lights up blue. Just recently, we began our Autism Awareness campaign for April. You would have seen multiple puzzle pieces, which is the international emblem for Autism, spread across the campus. The College embarked on a walk around the Sports Campus on Friday, 12 April to promote Autism Awareness. Their slogan on the back of the shirts of the Grace Wing staff and students, “Autism is not a disability but rather a different ability” was just so appropriate. Here at Ashton College we do recognise that each and every student has a different ability and to this end, makes our College uniquely different.

As part of our Easter celebrations the Linc worship team attended the Senior College assembly and Mark delivered a powerful message to all. His message spoke directly to each individual and contained three important points; Aviate - to control, Navigate – direction and Communicate. Our Rhinoturf lights have arrived, and the team is busy preparing for installation over the next couple of days. We will also be installing lights on our new tennis/netball courts which are nearing completion. During the next couple of months the installation of more lights on the Cricket Oval on the Sports Campus will be undertaken, with completion in time for the start of the cricket season. This will allow us to host a day/night series in term three, in

both the Junior and Senior Categories. The night series will be known as the AM-PM Night Series sponsored by Chad Zogby from AM-PM Plumbers and Chad is the master builder of so many buildings on our Campus. The Legacy Hall is nearing completion and there is great excitement in anticipation of opening this multi-purpose Indoor Sports Arena. Whilst some of the offices will be used from the end of April, the sports surface will take a little longer, but hopefully ready to host the official opening at the end of May. Last week Tuesday, 50 of the Senior College students were involved in the Food for Life project in the KwaDukuza area. This is the second year the Senior College have been part of this project. There were 10 pots on open fires with five students manning each pot preparing Breyani to feed 2 000 children for the day. The entire Senior College student complement donated the ingredients. Food for Life do this once a week throughout the year and produce a wholesome meal for the young children. It’s a heart-warming experience and our students were extremely humbled. The highlight was the delivery of the culinary product which brought instant delight to the students at various schools throughout the community. The students were accompanied by Captain Vinny and his team during the delivery points. It is so difficult to isolate individual performances but just recently we have had three outstanding performances that are really worthy of mentioning.

Firstly, our Meyer brothers, Clayton and Luca, brought home the bronze medal in an International ice hockey tournament, beating Luxemburg in the 3rd/4th place play off. Luca was named man of the match. Secondly, Jival Bodlall competed in the Senior National Championships from 8 April – 13 April 2019, this championship being the most prestigious swimming meeting where swimmers qualify for the SA team for the World Championships later this year. Jival is our first swimmer in ASA history to make it to this swimming meeting and in doing so, broke the one-

minute barrier for the 100m butterfly, which is no easy feat by any standard for his age. Amy Naudé , who won the SA Championship in the U17 400m event two weeks ago, competed in the All African Athletics Championships in the U17 age group held in the Ivory Coast this week. After running to a second place overall in one of the heats, Amy placed an incredible 3rd place overall, which places her as the 3rd fastest girl over 400m in Africa. Congratulations to these students and their coaches.

Landscape architecture isn’t just a buzz word; it’s a bona fide profession, based on “… the art and science of arranging land so as to adapt it most conveniently, economically, functionally, and aesthetically to any of the varied wants of people” (from the International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences.) Landscape design plans make use of elements such as practicality, natural beauty, horticultural variety, indigenous planting, and environmental sustainability, to seamlessly meld the landscape into the overall property.

It is important to note that estates will often conduct a landscape audit after building completion to ensure that the landscape design was carried out in strict accordance to the landscape design plan that was submitted. Most estates and some complexes will only allow you to use approved professional landscape designers. If you are at liberty to choose your own, be cautious in ensuring you choose an accredited professional landscaper, with the relevant experience in your chosen landscape “feel” and in the residential area where the property will be built.

HEN you start off mountain biking, you need little more than a T-shirt and shorts, a helmet and some takkies, but once you start taking it more seriously, you will realize the value of investing in some good kit.

It should be comfortable and should be designed specifically for its purpose. Trust me, your nether regions will appreciate good padding on anything longer than a 45-minute ride! I’ve put together a summary of some of the most important things that I think you’ll need:

MTB jersey

What you want from a MTB jersey (jersey is MTB lingo for a shirt) is something that is both comfortable and cool. Ideally it will also have a pocket on the back in which you can store energy bars/sweets/keys etc. Fabric should be breathable. Choosing a women or men specific cut is important for optimal comfort.

Helmet

This is your most important piece of kit and if you are going to spend money, it should be on this (it’s your brain at stake, after all!). Things to look for in a helmet are: 1 Safety, safety and safety. Is your helmet made by a reputable brand? 2 Fit: does it fit snugly and feel comfortable? The helmet shouldn’t move too much on your head and should not fall off when you tip your head forward, even if it isn’t strapped up. Is the helmet easily adjustable? Good helmets have a dial at the back that makes adjusting the size simple and quick, even while you are riding. You don’t want to be fiddling with straps every ride. 3 Is the ventilation good? Keeping your head cool on a long, hot ride is imperative, so your helmet should have ventilation that allows flow of air through the helmet. 4 Do you want a visor? Some helmets offer a detachable visor that acts like a peak cap for sun protection.

Gloves provide protection for your fingers should you fall, but they are also important for comfort. Good gloves should provide padding in the right places so that your hands don’t get bruised on longer rides (again, this may sound like a fashion statement, until you’ve experienced bruised palms!) Gloves should have a snug fit but also be made of a breathable material that has enough flexibility to allow full movement of your fingers.

Comfortable cycling shorts are of paramount importance for obvious reasons. No one wants to have a painful backside after a ride! Not everyone has a supermodel figure so don’t be put off by the Lycra. Celebrations at Striders

Ballito folk are determined to stay fit and full of beans and running every week with fellow striders is one way of doing this. Their monthly social evening and braai saw the re-launch of the club with Paul Swainson at the helm. Paul honoured the incredible 77-yearold Ballito veteran runner, Harry Botha, who has only been doing marathons since he was in his mid-sixties and has completed marathons in Berlin, London, New York, Boston, Chicago and Tokyo – where he received the prized Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star medal.

USAID to help local start-ups

There are so many new businesses popping up in and around Ballito and entrepreneurship is very much on the increase. In March, I popped along to an event at the ICC that was organized for the signing off of the document that would commit the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to help with funding towards Kingson Capital, the company that is “committed to developing and supporting start-ups in SA in an effort to meet both society and government’s resolve to create jobs and sustain economic development in the country”. Invitees were from large corporates and SME’s from throughout KZN. Guest speakers included the retired CEO of Standard Bank, Jacko Maree, who is now one of Ramaphosa’s investment envoys.

Imbizo Gallery is the place to be if you’re looking for anything out of the ordinary on the art front, and last Sunday we attended a fabulous display of totally extraordinary abstracts from gorgeous local artist, Natasha Barnes. Incidentally, Natasha is the biggest selling South African artist overseas. We were lucky to have her exhibiting locally before she heads off to exhibit in London.

Once a month, a Fledgling Entrepreneurs Workshop is held at the Hirsch’s Training Centre in Umhlanga Rocks and the April workshop saw over 50 start-up and well-established entrepreneurs gathering together to listen to two of South Africa’s most well respected business women in their fields: award-winning business woman, Margaret Hirsch and Marlene Powell, one of the top Business Coaches with ActionCOACH. The topic for the day was sales, and Margaret and Marlene gave attendees practical advice on how to improve and increase sales in their respective industries. The next workshop will be on May 3 on marketing and the various systems involved – including social media, PR, promotions and event co-ordinating. MIDLANDS’ Malts & Mango Surprises

KwaDukuza’s intrepid beach manager, “Seaweed” Steve Honneysett, recently left his coastal comfort zone and headed inland to the Midlands, where he discovered a taste for mango-flavoured beer.

NEEDED to pay a visit to the Midlands to get my hands on a new pair of shoes from one of the two manufacturers based in that area, and it was the perfect excuse to arrange a family weekend away.

The Midlands is home to a wide variety of homecraft items and shops on the famous Midlands Meander route, where one can find just about everything from food to clothing to furniture, and of course, the everpopular craft beer industry is firmly entrenched in the region. Starting from the bottom of the Meander, just past Midmar Dam, there is so much to explore and the day passes by before you know it. We got the shoes out of the way first, then tackled the Nelson Mandela Museum and capture site, which is an interesting and important piece of South African history, especially the special-effects sculpture of Nelson Mandela. We then made our way up to Piggly Wiggly where the beer tasting began. There are so many different craft beers these days on the market, so I try to restrict my tasting to the local beers of the area (or nearest too) and with a

Andrew describes the cave as a “luxury eco experience.” “It’s cozy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace and even has rock art on its walls. We also offer a private dining experience where we setup a table on the deck of your cave and you dine by candlelight under the stars,” he adds. “Sustainability and responsible tourism are a huge part of the ethos of our lodge,” says Andrew, explaining that they strive to do almost everything themselves. “It starts with our alternative structures (the lodge is built from sustainable materials, adopting ecofriendly methods), and ends with the cheese on your breakfast table. They draw on their organic vegetable

Life & Style editor-in-chief and 88FM Afternoon Drive host, Dave Charles, weathered the recent freak storm during the Lifestyle Centre’s Open Mic Night, and discovered that Ballito residents sure know how to hit a high note.

O, the Easter holidays have been exciting any way you choose to look at them. The holiday crowds have swelled local coffers, beaches have been busy despite the predictably variable weather and many locals have used the opportunity to get out of town for a jog around Cape Town or a quick catch up with family and friends in other parts of the country.

They obviously missed the drama in Ballito on Thursday night but the Life & Style crew was busy at the Lifestyle Centre Market when the storm hit. We were running the monthly Open Mic session. This has become really popular with aspirant musicians and singers who enjoy the opportunity to perform to a generally supportive audience of friends, family and members of the general public who have come to enjoy

the specials. All of the food vendors at the market have great offers and wildly reduced prices on Open Mic Night which contributes greatly to the fun and success of the evening. Last Thursday was no exception and we were going strong when the mother of all storms hit Ballito. The cacophony of sound from the wind, hail and rain beating down on the steel roof of the venue shut down the performance for almost half an hour until it started to subside and the programme could continue. To add to the drama, the electricity had gone down shortly before the main storm hit us. Luckily the Market has back-up generator powered electricity so the lights were on and the show continued, but I started to receive alarming messages about significant damage in parts of the town that were in complete darkness. The power outage was total and would

This month we tried... HOT YOGA

Ballito’s early mornings and evenings are getting a little chillier, so we’re heating things up with hot yoga classes at The Yoga Studio in Ballito.

GETTING TO KNOW… A nine-year veteran of the hair industry, originally from Victoria Bay, Maureen de Jager is now a huge asset to the team at Gerald Wells Ballito.

AUREEN completed her training between 2009 and 2012 at Northlink College in Cape Town, before working with some of the best stylists in the city.

OT everyone is of the bendy bent, but nothing will loosen you up quicker than a yoga class in a heated room.

Importantly, Bikram yoga and hot yoga are not the same thing. In Bikram, the room is heated to 40 degrees Celsius, while in hot yoga the room temperature is slightly less. Not all of the classes on offer are heated, but we felt the need to beat the autumn chill at 17:30 on a Tuesday evening. There are various levels and styles of classes, so if you’re a beginner, give studio owner and teacher Lauren Stanton a call to find out which classes would suit you best (she does suggest the slow yoga or yin yoga classes for beginners, but beginners are welcome in all classes). The class we attended was intermediate to advanced, and one needed the basic groundwork to comprehend the instructions. The class was a free-flowing Vinyasa, which simply means that one moves with the breath. Hot yoga offers a great full-body workout, contrary to what some may think, allowing you to really connect with your breath. Lauren also explains that “Hot yoga helps soothes the nervous system, and prevents injury.” Lauren, who is a 500-hour advanced teacher, eases her students into her classes, and the pace gradually increases to a steady yet vigorous flow of poses, or ‘asanas’, increasing your heart rate and challenging your strength, balance and focus. As you move through a series of positions, you are encouraged to be mindful of your technique, and Lauren offers useful advice on alignment and posture, with an occasional helping hand

if needed. There are props available in the class, such as blocks and straps to assist with poses you may find challenging. She winds things down again toward the end, completing the practice with ‘savasana’ where you are encouraged to return your breathing to normal, and totally relax and recover. The evening class is particularly enjoyable as the lights are dimmed, and you can really focus on your own body and state of mind, without the burden of feeling self-conscious. You’ll sweat more than usual, and the after-effects of hot yoga are pretty amazing, including glowing skin, and a calm, rejuvenated mind. The heating system at The Yoga Studio will help prompt your body’s natural detox processes, and you’ll leave feeling refreshed. The studio has beautiful panoramic views of Ballito, with floor to ceiling glass panelling, and Lauren often uses fragrant essential oils in a diffuser to transport your senses during your practice. The Yoga Studio offers various rates, from a once-off drop-in of R120, to cheaper per-class packages (depending on how many classes you take), and mats are available to hire for a small fee. “I learned so much,” she explains. “I had a great mentor who taught me some of the best techniques in colour and cutting.” Maureen then moved to George, where she based her own successful salon for three years, before moving to KwaZulu-Natal. “The love of my life (who also introduced me to surfing!) has a house here. We have two kids and what a perfect place to raise them! We love the ocean, and we love the surf here. The people are great, and it was a perfect move,” she adds. Work wise, Maureen was looking for a salon with high standards, good products and a good reputation, which was her rationale behind joining Gerald Wells. “I’m really happy working here, and we have a great team,” she adds. If you’re looking for luscious locks, you’re in luck, as Maureen is a hair extension guru. “There are so many styles and colours you can play with. You don’t have to do a full head of extensions to make a big difference in your look. A few fillers where you need more fullness or a few different colours will also work. It can make a huge difference in your appearance.” Another one of my favourite services, and what I’m good at, is highlights, ombres or balayage. I love giving more life to hair –

1. What do you love most about living on the North Coast? The pure variety of daily activities: I could be photographing on the beach at dawn, barefoot, dodging the incoming tide and trying not to donate a lens to the rockpool, and later I could be meeting a local chef at a quirky restaurant for a portrait, or perhaps a coastal forest session to capture all the forest dwellers that are wonderful to see on the other side of the lens (and not crawling up my leg), or maybe in the sugar cane with one of our many incredible sports men and women. 2. Where are you from originally, and why did you move here? I am a JHB kid. I learned to lock up a house, arm an alarm system, dodge a hijack, pick up a takeaway coffee and find the fastest way through gridlocked traffic without breaking a sweat before I was 19. Then I became a scruffy student, where I was taught how to use a camera and develop film in a darkroom. I left Grahamstown with a Masters, a girlfriend, a tolerance to most forms of alcohol and a totally unrealistic view on how I was going to earn money with a camera. After some time as a freelancer and editor and then some travel in the East, my wife and I had dinner with friends in Ballito after looking at rental spots in the ‘upper highway’. We spent the night and only after waking up

to an incredible sunrise did we realise the dinner was all a ruse to get us to take a sip of the Ballito Kool-Aid. By then it was too late. We were hooked. 3. Sum up North Coast living in five words. Living five minutes from adventure. 4. Tell us about your choice of image. The photo I chose is one of my favourites for a few reasons: The planning involved in getting to that spot at dawn, the work I did to get that composition, the number of waves that could have broken in the wrong place in the two minutes

I had to get the slower shutter speed to capture the moving water the way it finally did, while the sun was where it was. The fact that I was shooting with one of South Africa's best landscape photographers, Emil Von Maltitz, that morning who had advised me while capturing some of his own images, and most of all because I regularly visit that spot, often with a Salt Café cappuccino in my hand while I watch my kids play. Land Rovers and Jaguar cars could soon all be fitted with UVC technology to clean the air of pathogens by altering its DNA

aguar and Land Rover cars are joining the fight against superbugs and killing them in their cars’ air conditioning units before they can infect their occupants.

The automaker is fitting future models of its vehicles with an ultraviolet light (UVC) to sterilise the interior of the cars. UV lights have been used in the medical world for more than 70 years and is effective at killing pathogens - including bacteria and viruses. High energy rays from UV light sterilise the contents of the air conditioning system before it is pumped around the car’s cabin, reducing the risk of infection.

UV technology is already used for disinfecting water, filtering air and sterilising surfaces but the move to implement it in a car would be a first for the industry. Exposing pathogens to UVC destroys bonds within the DNA of the harmful microorganism and renders it useless and harmless to humans. Healthcare and maintaining the well-being of the driver and other occupants is a growing priority for Land Rover and Jaguar, who are owned by the same firm. Its current heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, which are available in the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE and Range

Rover Sport, uses high voltage to manipulate air particles. The firm claims trillions of nano-sized negatively charged particles (ions) deactivate pathogens by forming larger particles. These are then trapped by the car’s filters and discarded. Ion technology such as this, Jaguar Land Rover claims, is also effective at getting rid of smells and allergens. The firm claims UVC technology in cars would be able to stop the spread of cold and flu while also reducing the transmission of major superbugs by up to 30 per cent.
