BALLITO TO UMHLANGA
All about that BALANCE
W
HY do indulgences feel like a bad thing? Throughout history, human beings have made a habit out of turning things that make us feel good into something forbidden; we refer to ‘guilty’ pleasures, ‘sinful’ decadence, and quite frankly, life is too short to feel bad about treating yourself every now and then. Afterall, balance is key to life, so surely a little dollop of a really good thing is anything but a bad thing? We give ourselves such a hard time about so much, that this edition is about treating ourselves.

While we admittedly had chocolate on the brain for the past two weeks, we cannot ignore that Easter, sadly, is also big business – over two billion dollars’ worth of chocolate eggs get sold in the United States each year around Easter time. There’s a valid reason retail stores are unpacking their Easter products earlier and earlier; because we buy more! I remember a time when you had to wait all year before relishing the first hot cross bun of the season, but nowadays you can buy buns all year long. The longer they’re on shelf, the more we consume them, and it has definitely taken away some of the magic and detracts from the symbolism of Easter. While we’re all for an indulgence, there’s something to be said for waiting in anticipation, and then finally being able to savour a moment. So it was not without some consideration that we decided to celebrate a few of life’s indulgences this edition, but not without being mindful of it all.
On page 13, chef extraordinaire Jacqui Rey shares a recipe with us for her ultimate Easter cake, using traditional almond and chocolate as key ingredients. (You’ll want to cut-out and keep this one.) We hope you’ll rope the family in and decorate your own showstopper! Share your pics with us via our social media channels. We’d love to see your interpretations. Since eggs are everywhere at the moment, we asked Dr Rosie Carey to revisit the debate on the effect eggs have on our health. She gets to the yoke of it on page 9. Dietician Kim Wilson has a recipe of her own for you, for carb-free Easter treats on page 7. We also have a monster competition for the petrol-heads! Monster Jam is finally coming to South Africa. We have a set of four tickets to give away to one lucky winner, on page 14, worth R1 800, including VIP access to the pit party, where you can get up close to the drivers and their incredible machines. We wish you all a safe, and blessed Easter with your family and friends. Until next time,

WELLBEING
A TAKE ON TRADITION Dave Charles considers why old habits die hard.
a fiddler on the roof trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn't easy. You may ask, why do we stay here if it's so dangerous? We stay because Anatevka is our home. And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in one word: Tradition! Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as... as... as a fiddler on the roof!” Weddings are traditionally happy events, filled with symbolism connecting the present with both the past and the future. There’s the ring, a circle represents an ancient depiction of eternity. That’s what some might call an over-optimistic start, but it’s good to be positive. Then, there’s the veil, dating back to the origin of arranged marriages. It concealed the bride’s true appearance so the groom wouldn’t know what he was getting. Nothing new there, some might say. And there’s the cake. Traditionally cakes represent fertility. Ancient Romans would bake wheat cakes and

have been thinking about weddings and funerals lately – how many we have been to and how strangely traditional they are. Even the least conventional of us tends to concede to tradition on these occasions. While weddings and funerals are worlds apart, they share certain commonality. These are the moments of our lives that are governed much more by tradition than we might like to think. Oh yes, we are a million miles away from the world our great grandparents lived in and they were just as far removed from the conventions and norms of their ancient predecessors yet, when it comes to marriage and death, we are all very close.
As Tevye said in the opening scene of A Fiddler on the Roof: “A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But, here, in our little village of Anatevka, every one of us is
LUXE Gadgets
W
E are living in in a day and age where every day we see “The Next Best Gadget” launched. It’s tough to keep up with it all, but I was recently posed with the question; “What would be your ultimate luxury gadget, if money wasn’t a question,” and to be honest, it was a rather tough question! After some research the realisation quickly set in that the iPhone XS Max (which I thought was my ultimate gadget) is just a mere drop in the ocean for us mere mortals.
Enter the Lux iPhone Xs. This 24k yellow gold iPhone Xs starts at a “measly” $9,995 (about R140k) in the Classic Collection or you can even upgrade to the 512MB Lux iPhone Xs Max Ingot version, which features 313 of solid gold cased into the phone for a rather astronomical $94995 (R1.3 million) and is packaged in a custom-made aluminium case with a carbon fibre and leather interior. If you’re in the market for a new iPhone that’s not going to be on the monthly specials list of your favourite
break them over the bride’s head. (I know quite a few people who would have liked to bring that tradition back.) And the list continues… something old, something new something borrowed, something blue… TRADITION! Funerals, on the other hand, are traditionally less happy, but equally filled with symbolism. There’s the undertaker, the order of service, the flowers, the music, the food and… the alcohol. Emma Freud, British broadcaster and commentator believes that the alcohol is absolutely the most important traditional consideration: Alcohol was virtually invented for funerals. As soon as you can, bring out the booze. Have one on the deceased's behalf. And then give them another for good luck. And then another because (s)he'd have wanted it. And then one last one because they should never have died in the first place. So that's all I can tell you. Unless the person being buried is young, or died in truly horrible circumstances, I do think it's possible to create an intense, extraordinary, moving, memorable, vital, passion-filled day of celebration and remembrance, rather than an unhappy gathering that murkily mourns a death. If you end up organising my funeral, whenever it is, can there be fairylights on top of my coffin, a vast quantity of Black Forest
gateau on the kitchen table, a vat of peach bellinis and Robbie Williams singing She's the One in the church, preferably naked. Thank you. PS. It's impossible to talk about death without being offensive to someone at some point. If you're that someone – I'm sorry. Just ignore me. I've been to too many funerals recently. Emma has a very British point of view, and I hope I haven’t offended you with these somewhat offbeat observations. That is certainly not my intention or desire, but I do believe that we should look at creating new traditions that harmonise more with making society, and ultimately the world, a better place in the future. When my time has come, instead of a traditional funeral or memorial service, I would like those who remember me, to go out and do something kind. It could be anything at all, no matter how big or small, because every act of kindness creates a ripple with no logical end. Of course, a drop or two of that expensive single malt might also be shared – and maybe a song or two…see we’re off at a tangent already! Dave Charles presents the Afternoon Drive weekdays from 3pm, powered by BIDVEST MCCARTHY TOYOTA BALLITO on 88FM

part with that extra cash, head on over to cseed.tv to get in touch with the team to place your order. Finally, we all know what a hack doing, and folding, laundry can be. A rather innovative team over in Japan decided to build the world’s first laundry-folding robot, called the Laundroid. For only $16,000 (R225,000) it might just seem worth it to some. Although it looks rather unassuming and could easily pass as a built-in cupboard, the amazing design and sleek mirrored finish of the Laundroid would look great in most homes. By using multiple robotic arms, Laundroid picks up your clothes and scans them with cameras. It then connects to a server via Wi-Fi that uses AI to analyse the item. Then, using this information, Laundroid determines the best way to handle the clothing and takes away all the pain of having to fold it yourself. It even knows where it should hold it and how to fold it. The Laundroid takes around five to ten minutes to fold one T-shirt. Finally, the custom-built app keeps track of all your clothing,
allowing you to categorize clothes. I can think of a couple of parents who would gladly fork out the extra dollars for this one. You can place your order today at laundroid.sevendreamers.com and get ready to change your laundry folding life. We are living in exciting times where the reality of things like laundry-folding robots are becoming more and more of a reality. It won’t be long before the price of these ultra-extravagant devices makes it more of a reality for the rest of us. But for now, we can only dream!

SUGAR SHAKE-UP We all want to do what’s best for our kids, but we still want them to enjoy their childhood. So how do we indulge them with delicious treats without setting them up for failure later in life? Dietician Kim Wilson has some sweet solutions for you.
T
HE majority of our taste preferences are developed in the first two years of life. Some of these are innate, but most of them are learned. This affects our eating behaviors both as children and later in life. It’s important that in our first two years of life we are exposed to a variety of different foods in order to prevent unnecessary exclusions. This refers to whole foods however, and not every item in the sweets aisle!
Convenience food companies and advertising agencies know that the earlier they get your kids onto sugar and sodium, the better for their business. High intakes of sodium and sugar early in life are not only linked to childhood obesity, but also health issues later in life such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Treat Your Kids Without Sabotaging Their Health
Kids will naturally enjoy sweet and salty foods, just like we do. Despite your best efforts to avoid giving your child treats, at some stage (the next birthday party or school break time), they will get a taste for chocolate, ice cream and all sorts of salty treats. Here are some tips for success in raising healthy children:
1. Make it Yourself
Convenience foods are attractive by their very nature, but they will almost always contain excess salt, sugar or unhealthy fats. This is especially true when it comes to treats! Pinterest is a goldmine of recipes for you to make
healthier alternatives to almost any treat on the market. See our recipe below, and visit www.lifestylehealth.co.za for more delicious recipes.
2. Normalize Balance
It is okay to have “regular” treats from time to time. We never want to create negative emotions (guilt, fear, anxiety) in relation to foods. Eating healthy foods should never be seen as a punishment or restrictive type of diet. Make every effort to avoid creating negative emotions when it comes to healthy foods by allowing your children to have some store-bought or so-called “regular” treats when it comes to special functions, within reason, of course.
3. Prepare for Success
Wherever possible, try to start early with introducing healthy foods to your child and speaking positively about their role in everyday life. Healthy foods should be commonplace in the home and preferably be a part of normal life. Simply present healthy foods as ones that you as a family eat the majority of the time, and your children are more likely to grow up with the taste for them.
4. Set an Example
Ever heard the saying “do what I say not what I do”? Well, this is not the way to encourage our children to choose a healthy lifestyle. It is important that the main role models in your child’s life also do their best to mostly eat healthy foods and engage in regular activity. This again serves to make sure that a healthy and balanced lifestyle is the norm.
5. Encourage Activity
Go for walks together, cycle together, play sports outdoors, get down to the beach, or get to park run as often as you can. Not only are these important family bonding moments, but they also will
encourage activity from an early age.
6. Teach at All Times
I’m not saying you should give harsh lectures to your kids on healthy foods. Encourage them to rather be curious about the benefits of different nutrients. Just get a handle on the basics of why vegetables for example are included in your own diet (i.e. for fiber, vitamins and minerals to help your body be strong and avoid illness). Then you can convey this so that they have a basic understanding from an early age.
7. Upgrade Household Snacks
“But mom there’s nothing in the fridge to eat” drives all parents to madness. Keep fresh fruits, nuts and seeds, homemade granola bars or other healthy snacks around at all times. If you keep fruit in bowls on the counter in the house, your children will be more likely to reach for these.
Encourage healthy food and regular exercise the majority of the time. That way your children can also have treats and enjoy special occasions without fear of punishment or guilt. When we are overly restrictive, we may encourage an unhealthy relationship with food without meaning to. Treat your children with healthier options where possible, but don’t panic over them having one slice of cake at a party.

LOW-CARB EASTER EGGS These easter eggs are a delicious treat. They’re low in carbohydrates and (almost) guilt free. Ingredients: •3/4 cup almond flour •250g almond nut butter •3/4 cup desiccated coconut •2 Tbsp coconut oil •3/4 cup powdered eyrthritol •180g dark chocolate (70 percent or darker) •4 Tbsp ghee/butter Method: 1.
In a large bowl, combine the almond flour, coconut, and erythritol. 2. Over medium-low heat melt almond butter and coconut oil. 3. Once melted, add to the dry ingredients and mix. 4. Spread onto a parchment lined baking tray to desired thickness. 5. Refrigerate for about 2 hours or until set. 6. Using a small oval cookie cutter, cut out as many egg shapes as possible (either eat or reform any scraps into a single layer and cut out more eggs.) 7. Place the eggs back in the refrigerator to harden again. 8. Over a double boiler, melt the chocolate and ghee. Whisk to combine. 9. Dip the eggs, one at a time and cover with chocolate. 10. Place the dipped eggs on a plate lined with parchment paper and place in the fridge to set (about 30 minutes).

The LOW-DOWN on EGGS Our medical expert, Dr Rosie Carey, tackles the sticky question of eggs and your health; to eat or not to eat?
I
t’s Easter this month, which means we’re talking eggs (unfortunately not the chocolate kind!)
Let’s take a quick step back and take a look at what eggs are made up of: EGG WHITE: this contains mostly protein (good, high-quality protein) EGG YOLK: The yellow part, which is dense in lots of nutrients but is also high in cholesterol (two egg yolks contain about 422mg cholesterol whereas 100g of steak contains about 80mg) So, eggs are a bit of a conundrum: they have a whole lot of good in them, but also potentially a whole lot of bad.
Over the past 60 years, there has been a lot of controversy around eggs, and whether they are good for you or whether eating ”So, eggs are a bit of a conundrum: they have a them is a whole lot of good in them, but also potentially a fast-track towards a whole lot of bad.” heart attack. In 1961, We all know that you can find a the American Heart Association study to back almost anything you recommended limiting dietary want to on the Internet, but this cholesterol intake, and since egg latest study assessing egg intake yolks are high in cholesterol, eggs was very comprehensive. got a lot of bad publicity and egg Researchers combined intake decreased significantly over individual patient data from the subsequent couple of decades. six large US cohort studies and Then, towards the mid-2000’s followed patients up for 17 years evidence started coming out that to monitor any cardiovascular suggested cholesterol intake is events. The result: people who not necessarily related to blood ate more eggs were more likely to cholesterol levels, which in turn have cardiovascular events. This is not necessarily related to risk of was the result once the researchers heart disease. In 2016, for the first had adjusted for any confounding time in decades, the US Dietary factors. Guidelines did not specify an The researchers then took upper limit for cholesterol intake. this a step further and looked Then, just when everyone happily at total cholesterol intake and, started eating eggs for breakfast yes, you guessed it, it was not again, an impressive study came specifically the eggs, but rather out earlier this year that cast eggs the total cholesterol intake that back into the role of killer. So, accounted for the result. Simply should you eat eggs or not?

put, they figured it was the cholesterol in the eggs and not the eggs themselves that was the problem. Problem solved? Not quite. If you look deeper into the data something strange becomes evident. 1) Eating more eggs increased total cholesterol intake, which was associated with heart disease. 2) Increased total cholesterol intake was associated with increased heart disease (even if you eat no eggs). 3) Increased blood cholesterol levels were associated with increased heart disease 4) Increased cholesterol intake (eating more cholesterol) doesn’t necessarily lead to increased blood cholesterol levels. Which leaves us even more confused than before. Could it be that dietary cholesterol intake isn’t the problem at all, but is rather a marker of some other unhealthy behaviour unrelated to blood cholesterol levels, but associated with heart disease? Or is there some other weird effect as yet unknown to us? The bottom line is that the verdict is still out on eggs. My advice in this kind of situation is to eat eggs in moderation until further data becomes available. None of this applies to chocolate eggs, of course.

Book your tickets at webtickets.co.za, or at your nearest Pick ‘n Pay for R95. 2. DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB There’s a host of family fun to be had with the Easter egg hunt at Durban Country Club. Join them on Sunday, 21 Apr 2019 from 11am, 101 Isaiah Ntshangase Road, Stamford Hill, for a day of fun and entertainment galore. You could win archery tag vouchers, train rides, putt putt games, all-day jump tickets, pedicures and slime workshops. For info
on how to follow them on Facebook @sugarrushpark or Instagram @sugarrushkzn, or go to sugarrush.co.za 4. THE BEVERLEY HILLS If you’re looking for a slightly more exclusive morning hunting for Easter eggs and possibly enjoying a family brunch, The Beverley Hills hotel in Umhlanga is hosting an egg hunt for children between the ages of four and eight on 20 April from 11am. The hunt will take place in their beautiful new Secret Garden space, with a special golden egg up for grabs. The cost is R495 per person and booking is essential as numbers are limited to 50 children. Call Letaria on 031 561 2211 or email letaria. pillay@tsogosun.com 5. BALLITO JUNCTION If the children have had a chocolate overload, head to the Ballito Junction Mall between 19 and 22 April where your children can join in on a free, Easter-themed colouring corner throughout the weekend from 11am to 5pm. This month we tried The Shed is a much-loved Salt Rock hangout. Now, under new ownership and with a lip-smacking new menu, we didn’t need much convincing to head out for lunch.
I
T was the first chilly, grey day of autumn when the Life & Style team headed to The Shed, for what turned out to be a lesson in laid-back, coastal comfort food.
The Shed, based at the Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock, has been injected with fresh enthusiasm, under the guidance of new owners, one of whom is Creasan Govender. With a background in owning and operating restaurants and night clubs, Creasen is bringing heaps of energy and experience and is well-versed in what it takes to run a successful business. Cameron Andrews, his right hand, is no stranger to The Shed having worked under the previous owners, and together they are buzzing with new ideas. First up, we were treated to some of the tapas-style plates, with dukkah-spiced falafel on red pepper mayo – on the menu as ‘Oh My

bowl of creamy calamari (What’s Kraken, R85), a flavour-punch of paprika cream sauce and sour dough toast that’s a firm favourite from The Shed’s previous menu, and is back by popular demand. Cocktails are a highlight of the menu too, and the resident barmen sure know how to put on a show; you can expect some fire! In among the mix of burgers, pizzas and curries on offer, the sharing boards are a drawcard, served on quirky shovel heads, and made for friends and family to sample together. Next, the team treated us to the ‘Lobola’, R149, a traditional shisa nyama mix of steak, boerewors (specially supplied by Umdloti butcher Farm to Fork), and succulent Moroccan-style lamb ribs. The chakalaka is homemade, as is the uJeqe, a steamed traditional sweet-tasting bread, which is the perfect accompaniment to this hearty dish, offering flavour in, well, spades! The ‘Life & Style’ team went on our own Easter hunt for the most decadent (and some guilt-free) chocolate fixes we could find.
