DURBAN NORTH TO BALLITO

I

HAVE never been overly impressed with inanimate objects d’art considering anyone who spent lavishly on these things as somewhat strange. Cars and motorcycles, however, are another matter entirely and, although I have never had the ammo to really splurge in this direction, I certainly have admired those that particularly took my fancy. I have spent money on what has generally been considered the important things in life – educating the kids, insuring against medical and other calamity, private security, paying off bonds, contributing to SARS for the wonderful governance that we enjoy here etc… all of them, really fun ways to spend your cash

Friends I have known who have not been blessed with the same commitments and responsibilities, will probably never know the joy of paying those exorbitant costs. Still, they probably take solace in the escapism of fast cars, holidays abroad and the luxury

with which they surround themselves – a poor second prize, if you ask me… but, as they never have, I will keep those thoughts to myself I wonder if kids ever really appreciate the sacrifices most parents make to give them the foundation that will hopefully enable them to launch. Moving on… Having never been overly impressed with inanimate objects d’art…I have become strangely obsessed with a singular piece of industrial design dating back to the fifties. It started as a bit of a flirtation. My beloved, Sue, persuaded me to accompany her to Weylandts, soon coming to Ballito, to take a look at a chair that she thought might be useful to stop me complaining about the terribly uncomfortable designer couch in the TV room that recently arrived to replace the comfortable one that fell off the ox wagon with Paul Kruger. I, of course, put up a reasonable but futile defence, and we duly found ourselves in the gigantic showroom in Umhlanga where the object of her attention was on display. It was a rather simple leather chair and footstool arrangement that had to be conjured by magic because, as soon as I had eased myself into it, I couldn’t move. Actually, I could, but I really didn’t want to – it was that comfortable. I instantly loved everything about it - except the price tag, which could have been a decent down payment on that Harley I had my eye on a while back. But, as Sue pointed out, this was much safer than a motorcycle and I would probably get more use out of it, knowing how fond I have become of Netflix and Showmax.

Dave Charles presents the Afternoon Drive powered by

This comfortable furniture combination is based on the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman created in 1956 by Charles and Ray Eames, a husband-and-wife design duo best known for their industrial design, graphic design and filmmaking. The original versions of the chair were crafted from five thin layers of plywood which were then covered by a veneer of Brazilian rosewood. Examples of the chair are part of the permanent collection at the New York Museum of Modern Art. A modern take on the nineteenth century club chair When the set was introduced in 1956, there was nothing like it, and there is still nothing to equal it. The Eameses’ modern take on a nineteenth century club chair has not only endured for more than 50 years, it has become one of the most significant furniture designs of the twentieth century—instantly recognizable and enduringly fresh. So, from having never been overly impressed with inanimate objects d’art, I am beginning to change my way of looking at the world. Now, if it had a supercharged 357 V8 with performance pipes, we would really be talking! Welcome to another edition of Life & Style also online at www.lifeandstyle.fm

ore and more I get called out by mature homeowners to do a valuation on their property, and all have the same question for me: “Should I sell my house now that I am retiring, or should I stay on?”

Deciding to sell your home when you retire is a complicated issue for most people. You’ve got lifestyle and health issues on one side, and financial realities on the other. Many people put their quality-of-life first when making this decision, but given that many nearing retirement have a savings shortfall, it’s wise to consider the financial side of this equation as well. Here are five questions to help you:

1. Do you need the money? If you require extra funds to cover your expenses in retirement, don’t overlook the equity in your home. On average, people age 65 and up have more Rand value in home equity, and less Rand value in retirement savings. Selling your property can free up your cash investment. 2. Can you afford to move? Don’t assume that moving will lower your cost of living. Many retiring people who sell their homes don’t actually downsize. You might move to a smaller home, but you may find that although it is often a nicer home with more amenities, it will also be more expensive. Before selling get out there and look around, so you know what the prices are today. Selling, moving or buying a new home can add up to a hefty expense. Be sure to factor in closing costs like agents fees; moving expenses and any lifestyle changes that might increase your budget. 3. Can you afford to stay? Aside from property taxes, homeowners insurance, levies, utilities and routine maintenance, you could get surprised with an unexpected expensive repair. Also, at some point, because of health issues or just getting older, it’s likely you’ll need to pay for renovations in your home, such as a bathroom renovation to accommodate your frail care needs. So when you do

the math, consider whether selling and moving might give you access to a more comfortable lifestyle over the long-term rather than staying put and paying the price. 4. Do you want some freedom? “We don’t need a big place anymore and we’d like to do some traveling.” This is often the reason for selling at retirement age. But be aware of the trade-offs: It’s hard to move to an area where you don’t know anyone, especially if you’re retired and don’t have local contacts to build a new social life. And speaking of social ties… 5. How important to you is your current community? Many people prefer to remain in their current home when they retire, as they would like to keep their social network. Of those willing to move, most would like to remain close to where they are now. The cost of remaining in your home might be high, but many people are willing to pay the price if it helps them maintain those key relationships in retirement. The Bottom Line Given how many factors are at play, it’s not surprising that many people put off running the numbers and exploring all the housing options before retiring. It’s a complex calculus, and many homeowners don’t have a financial plan that includes a cost-benefit analysis of whether to sell their residence. It is never too late to start planning. Starting in your mid-50s this choice should be factored into your future financial plan giving you peace of mind when you have to retire. At Harcourts Dolphin Coast we love to assist all our clients with a FREE property valuation of their home to help them make wise decisions. “To Sell or not to Sell. “ - that is the question. et’s face it, we live in a little slice of paradise! The bush, golf courses, gorgeous beaches, trendy restaurants and brilliant shopping centres. However, there are a few glitches in our little piece of heaven and if we don’t deal with them, there is a strong likelihood that some of us may, sadly, just end up in the little patch of paradise in the sky.

I’m talking about the death trap on the N2 between Ballito and Stanger which for the past 4 years has been under construction, and in certain sections has been narrowed down to a single lane on the north going highway. Solid concrete barriers have been put in place, so if one sways off slightly to the centre into the barrier, it would almost certainly be Game Over – and it has been for several people over the last few years. If one is stuck behind an accident, there is nowhere to turn and motorists have to literally sit it out – for hours on end sometimes!! This is far from being acceptable, and after

W

travelling on the road this weekend and chatting to friends in Stanger and Blythedale who are at their wits end, I phoned SANRAL to get an update. Ridhwaan Mahomed (mahomedr@nra.co.za. Telephone 03339228141) is the SANRAL person who deals with this stretch of road and when I spoke him he informed me that SANRAL are still waiting for funding from

treasury so that they can appoint a new contractor. He was on the verge of following up with his liaison committee at SANRAL HQ about the issue when I spoke to him, and I will be following up with him on a regular basis to see what is happening – persistence, in my book, is key. I suggested that perhaps it would be only fair to drop the toll charge at Mvoti for residents in Stanger and Blythedale – until repairs have been completed, but this is out of his hands – however, I think it’s something worth considering and I will follow up on this. Petitions to SANRAL from residents would also help nudge the treasury into action. The alternate route – the R102 that runs through Shakas Kraal and Groutville – is an option of course, but not always a safe one at night, so let’s get the N2 fixed!!! Contact me on gjthomo@gmail.com if you have any suggestion or if you have a consumer issue you would like dealt with.

CATHY GRANT

What was the most valuable lesson you learned on the way up? To always be honest and ethical in all aspects of life. Hard work and perseverance is the best remedy for success. What is the most important aspect of your job? The career path I chose was to sell property, be it a land or a home so to me making the client feel comfortable and making sure that he/she is happy is of utmost importance. What is your strongest attribute in your professional life Not to sound cliché but my family who are supportive and have understood that sometimes my job takes the Lion’s portion of my day. Apart from family, Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why? This is a tough question as my world revolves around my family but if I had to choose I would say the strong women (my friends) that are in my life. That have been there from the start of my journey as a business woman. They have been my support system, my DAME in shining armour, and my CHEF when I cannot look at my kitchen and the SAINT who makes me look presentable without batting an eyelid. These women are truly inspirational, these woman make me want to improve in all aspects in life because together we are an unstoppable force of nature! What inspires you? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I can sometimes get so involved with property that I forget about myself. When I walk into a new home that is an empty shell I am inspired to make this a home for a family. Seeing the look on a family’s face when they walk into their new home is all the inspiration I need to know that I am doing something of value. And lastly my grandkids, oh boy just listening to them, being around them inspires me to keep going! Energy in leaps and bounds. . . .Who needs a gym?! What is your favourite song? Oh, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison If you could choose to have dinner with three people, who would they be and why? I have been asked this question before and my answer now differs. I would have to say: 1. Cyril Ramaphosa – to pick his brain on how he plans on mending what has been broken. 2. Julius Malema – to have some diversity and controversy at the dinner table. 3. Chris Naidoo – my husband because it would be unfair to have Julius at the table and not share the fun. What was the most valuable lesson you learned on the way up?

DA COSTA INC. - SIMPLE, STRESS-FREE PROPERTY TRANSFERS

ANNABELLE DA COSTA

Buying your new home is a major decision, and so is selling. These big changes are so often tied to emotional landmarks like getting married or having a new baby. You might be changing jobs, changing towns or changing countries. You could be upsizing, downsizing or upscaling while downsizing, but whatever your reason, you’re ready for new beginnings. Buying and selling property is combination of excitement and optimism – and anxiety. It’s a major financial move, and it can get complicated. Whether you’re moving up or moving on, Da Costa Inc. will help ensure the legal processes around the transfer happen seamlessly and don’t any cause unnecessary delays. At Da Costa Inc., we specialise in property law. It’s all we do. We understand the sale isn’t really real till the transfer is through, so completing the process for you, smoothly and without any fuss, is our priority. Personal service and close contact with clients – and your estate agents– is our guiding principle. We’ll answer your questions and keep you up to speed with weekly

progress reports, so you know exactly what’s happening. Annabelle Da Costa founded Da Costa Inc. in Mount Edgecombe almost 10 years ago. Full of energy and determination, Annabelle leads by example and likes to get things done! Clients comment often on the speed of our transfers, and the conveyancing team takes huge pride in setting speed records. But more importantly, we measure ourselves by our clients’ happiness, an approach that has worked for us at Da Costa Inc. and for our clients. We’ve grown consistently, and now have offices in Mount Edgecombe, Ballito and Cape Town – but we handle properties all over the country. STELLA UPNECK – LIFE COACH “As a wife, mother of 4 and Nanni to 3 beautiful little boys, I love to laugh with them, hug them, feed them and celebrate life as often as possible. As a Life Coach I enjoy seeing my clients light up with “aha” moments and when my retreat attendees leave my Villa Soul, after being saturated with care, love and good food, I know the well of my soul is full to overflowing.” What was the most valuable lesson you learned on the way up? The most valuable lesson I have learned journeying through life was that every situation I faced, whether good or bad, was an opportunity for learning. And with that understanding, I have developed a strong sense of gratitude and also a desire to live in each moment with as much fun and joy as possible! If you had more time how would you spend it? If I had more time I would spend it travelling the world, with the people I love, and eat new foods, see new things, meet new people and relax around warm fires in beautiful Chateaux’s in all the snowy countries

WAR

Lest We Forget…

Our parents have played an important role in our lives and while it is the current achievers that are often acknowledged for the contribution they are making to society, it is good to pay tribute to those who guided, mentored, loved and inspired us. Here “Seaweed” Steve Honeysett, KDM Beach Manager and Surf Reporter on 88FM, pays tribute this Women’s Day to his Mum with a story from her childhood.

“SEAWEED” STEVE HONEYSETT

I

Her father was called up and, being a carpenter by trade, was put into a unit working on the defences of the UK and was responsible for making thousands of those wood, barbed wire structures that were placed on their beaches to prevent landings and obviously people from going onto the beach as they were planted with land mines. Imagine not being allowed to go to the beach for seven years - that’s one hardship us surfers could never handle. With the war came the blockades and all shipping imports and exports ceased, so everything was rationed and every family was given a book of coupons with which they were allowed to go down to the corner grocer to collect their weekly rations . What you could grow in your back yard were extra luxuries, and essential

So I got thinking about the hardships of war and wondered what it would be like to live through such a time. My mother now in her 80’s lived through the Second World War as a child in the United Kingdom and remembers life during those early years. Born in 1938 one year prior to the war she recalls the hardships leading up to the age of 7 when it ended and how the families all had to come together to make life happen .

items of food were all you could get from the corner grocer. Two ounces of sweets per week, a brown paper bag of broken biscuits, 1 pound of sugar , half a block of butter, Two pints of milk, 1 pound of meat and it went on with not much over a pound of veg unless you were growing it in your back yard. Your lounge was turned into an air raid bomb shelter - a half dome steel structure that the family gathered under when the bombers were flying over. My mother recalls sitting in complete darkness as all electricity was cut so that the enemy bombers could not make out houses or buildings, listening to the whistling sound of those bombs as they dropped towards earth and never knowing if one was heading for your house. The same went for everyone caught out in the street. There were community air raid shelters around town and often my mother had to dash into one on her way back from school or from the grocery store and take refuge . She recalls sitting in one of those shelters staring at strangers and wondering if those bombs were dropping on her house or even if her house would still be there. I get shivers thinking what it must be

like for a child between the ages of four and seven having to live through all of that and be responsible enough to keep out of danger’s way, but that was a way of life for them. Kids then had to work to survive. There was no TV, no computers or phone, just a radio that broadcast news in the evenings when you were in your air raid shelter. For seven long years there were things that my mother had never experienced, like tasting a simple banana. She recalls her first taste of one after the war and she did not like it. A lot of children were separated from their families, especially those from the big cities where bombings were more frequent, and they were sent out to the country to farms where they helped to tend to the fields. Most women had to go to the factories to work where they produced much of the equipment needed to sustain that war, from guns to vehicles, planes to clothing the whole country worked for the war effort. My mother recalls how people came together and looked after each other and often strangers would help the children in and out of shelters and made sure they got home ok. A friend who went through the Rhodesian War once said that you will never know war until you are in one. Hopefully, we won’t ever have to go through what they did.

del ig hts Halloumi, Za’ttar and Honey Parcels Z’attar - Meaning ‘Wild Thyme’ in Arabic. Z’attar is an increasingly popular Middle Eastern spice blend of toasted sesame seeds, thyme, marjoram or oregano, sumac and salt which can be sprinkled liberally onto flatbreads, mixed with olive oil as a dip or even tossed over roasted veg. The Z’attar in this recipe really brings a new flavour dimension to these crispy, salty, spicey and sweet phyllo morsels. Amazing as a canapé or a starter, and can be made ahead of time and frozen.

1 x block of Halloumi chopped into 8 to 10 sticks of Halloumi (approximately 1 cm thick) 2 or 3 sheets phyllo pastry 100g Butter Melted 8 to 10 tsp Z’attar Spice 8 to 10 tsp Runny Honey Fresh Thyme to Garnish

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celcius. 2. Brush a sheet of phyllo pastry with melted butter and fold it in half. 3. With a sharp knife or scissors cut the pastry in half and in half again, so you have four equal rectangles of phyllo pastry. 4. Lay the halloumi on one end of the phyllo rectangle and roll into a cigar like shape incasing the halloumi in pastry. 5. Fill a baking tray with your halloumi phyllo cigars and brush with butter. 6. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden and beautiful. 7. Remove from the oven, drizzle each one with 1 tsp of honey and top with a 1 tsp sprinkle of Za’ttar spice. Garnish with curly stems of fresh thyme and enjoy. Served in glassware and Olga-Mare table linen from the Cookin Store at the LifeStyle Centre

Used Car Business Gets Dose of Online Honesty Lauren Rawlins

U

SED car salesmen have a reputation for being pushy and peddling cars that may have hidden faults. Now a new local Web site hopes to disrupt this industry by making the process of buying and selling used cars more transparent.

The free-to-use for buyers platform, auction.co.za, will launch on Monday, 3 September. It will offer an alternative digital marketplace for South African consumers buying and selling vehicles. All vehicles will be inspected and given a rating before they are loaded onto the site, and will include defects and vehicle history. William Miller, co-founder of auction.co.za, says: “We are putting the buying and selling power back into the hands of the consumer, who will now be able to buy or sell their vehicle online. Corporate fleet owners will also be able to offload their fleet of vehicles through us.” Co-founder Renaldo de Jager says: “The business model is simple: our drive is that the end consumer gains. We provide auto sellers with a desktop valuation, giving consumers insight into the real value of their vehicle prior to selling. “As a tech-driven online service, transparency is a key focus because we inspect and test-drive every car, giving it a rating. A list of exactly what is wrong with the car is included in the online vehicle profile, allowing buyers to make an informed decision as opposed to having to live with hidden defects.” The company says this transparency allows sellers to get maximum value for their vehicle, and buyers to know exactly what they are buying. Auction.co.za makes money by taking a small percentage of the sale price. Buyers can participate in auctions from a desktop or smartphone application. Local banks and insurers will offer financing, insurance and ancillary services on the site. Buyers will have access to pre-approved loans prior to bidding.
