ne of the attractions luring evergrowing numbers of social migrants to our part of the country is the opportunity to enjoy a generally healthier lifestyle. Walking and running along the beachfront is an activity enjoyed by many and the benefits of walking and running for exercise are well publicised.

But if pounding the tarmac or promenade isn’t really your thing, you might well consider exploring the open countryside around us on a mountain bike. I really can’t remember when last I rode a bicycle on uneven terrain – I explored the Durban promenade on a rather tired old bike-for-hire a couple of years back but that was a relatively straight and level run. The chance arose last week for me to get back into the saddle and curiosity compelled me to have a go. On Sunday my beloved Sue and I were invited to venture forth into the Mystic with expert rider Dr Rosie Carey. Rosie has an interest in teaching beginners how to get to grips with the finer points of cycling through forests and open spaces and this was an opportunity not to be missed. Sue is much fitter than me and had already been out with Rosie a few times so I must admit to feeling a sense of trepidation when we arrived at Holla Trails to hire the cycles. I was a little put out by the fellow behind the counter who suggested that I should ride a fat bike. I am aware that I could lose a few pounds, but still, I thought that he was being a bit too personal until I realised that this is what the bikes are called.

They have extra wide tyres for better stability through loose sand and mud, so they really are apparently easier for beginners to ride on the trails in these parts. After a quick adjustment of the saddle for optimal height and some instruction on the correct use of the gears and brakes, we were off! My initial trepidation quickly turned to exhilaration as the kilometres melted away and the countryside changed from forest to cane fields interspersed with patches of riverine bush. We rode under a tumbling sky with giant clouds adding a sense of dramatic majesty to the adventure. There were a couple of challenges that I opted to walk over rather than ride – rickety narrow bridges with sheer drops to the river on either side saw me choosing discretion over valour on one or two occasions but overall I managed to keep up quite well. But I have to say that whoever designed those

saddles must have had a really weird sense of humour. Even the padded shorts that Sue had insisted that I wear for the occasion couldn’t mitigate the growing discomfort that saw me eventually standing on the pedals far more than was apparently necessary. But apart from that, and the occasional burning sensation in my quads and glutes that haven’t had much reason to complain lately, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Nine kilometres later we were back at the Holla Trails HQ and, fat bike safely returned, we celebrated with a cappuccino and reflected on the experience. Will I be back? Absolutely! I really wish that I had discovered this form of exercise earlier but still – better late than never. If you are tempted to do the same, I strongly suggest that you take a lesson or two from an expert like Rosie to give you a head start. IT’S THE SEASON NOT TO BE SILLY STEVE HONEYSETT

O it’s come around again and as we prepare for another busy holiday time I can’t help but think of all the visitors that will be down on holiday kitting themselves out with the latest beach gear and heading into the surf.

Yes I know this is their annual once a year vacation and a lot have made resolutions to get on that surfboard and learn to surf or catch that big fish on that fishing paddle ski. It does get entertaining and at times and darn right scary when you watch them try their luck. It reminds me of a time when I was a beach lifeguard at Salt Rock which is renowned for a large shore break (a wave that breaks onto the sand) and as I sat observing the beach activities, I noticed an excited visitor run onto the beach with a brand new wave paddle ski over his shoulder. A wave paddle ski is a short surfboard like craft

designed to surf waves much like a surfboard, except that you sit down and propel yourself with a pair of paddles. The part of this craft which is the lifeguard’s nightmare is the seat belt system which is supposed to keep the rider firmly in the seat and allows one to

use their waist to assist with the turning of the ski on a wave. Little known to the novice is that this harness is also a life threat were when you place too much weight onto it, because it then is impossible to release and some have come close to drowning being upside down and trapped. So as a precaution, I paid attention to this person on that day as he made ready to ride the wild surf. He placed his ski on the sand where the waves

wash up the beach with the ski fins firmly in the sand which was his first mistake. Then he proceeded to fasten the harness. Then, with paddle in hand, a large surging wave picked him up and propelled him into the oncoming waves turning him upside down and panic ensued. By this time I had my torpedo buoy in my hand and was running down to do the rescue when the most bizarre thing happened. He had managed to flip the ski over and with it on his back like a Ninja Turtle he was crawling up the beach on his hands and knees which got the whole beach laughing in hysterics. Once high enough up on the sand he casually flipped over and got himself back into position and off he went for round two. Well, this was a first for me and I stood watching as he went through this routine time and again. Each time the beach goers roared with laughter but that did not stop him until he completely exhausted himself and had not made it out past the breaking waves.

Entertaining it certainly was but there are other incidents like the fishing paddle ski fishermen who arrive with the latest skis and new accessories and then proceed to try and launch. They all get a good lesson from the ocean that sometimes injures them and destroys their equipment. This generally ends in their investments being thrown back into their garages and left to gather dust. Equipment has become frighteningly expensive these days and one does not want to see it all damaged on the first day’s outing. So the best advice is to seek help from one of our many experienced local residents who can help guide you through the process of learning everything you will need to know to get past the waves. Also, always operate in the presence of lifeguards or people on the beach that could alert emergency personnel if you get into difficulty. Surfers will generally pass on their knowledge to other surfers and our boat clubs have a wealth of experienced members that can assist from launching to guiding you in the right direction with fishing tips and equipment, so why not make use of them and save yourself from learning the hard way . Avoid swimming areas with your equipment so that you do not injure anyone else and always let someone know where you intend to go and surf, fish or take part in any other activity. After the fisherman was knocked off his paddle ski two weeks back by a Great White Shark in the Tinley Manor area, it might be wise to add a shark pod electromagnetic device to that long list of gear you will need. Stay safe out there this season and enjoy your holidays.

TOP TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2019 RICCI HEYNS - BLISS INTERIOR DESIGN With the New Year approaching, it might be time to give your space a make-over. The best way to kick-start your creativity is to look to the design world’s hottest trends: 1.Terazzo:

Terrazzo (Italian for “Terrace) was invented in Venice in the 15th century. Many Durban Art Deco buildings from the 20’s still feature these colourful, aggregate-rich floors. Terazzo is currently enjoying a comeback, offering designers a flexibility that is not possible with polished concrete. It is Zero VOC, which means it’s a “green”, cost-effective solution.

2.Natural Spaces

Straight lines have dominated the industry for the last few years. There is currently a definite trend towards more organic shapes. Look for curved sofas, rounded back chairs and softer shapes in both prints and furniture.

3. More Metallics

Although the metallic trend has been going strong for a while, there is a definite move towards mixing not only metals, but also textures. Rich velvets contrasted with rough weaves are a great addition to the mix of highlights from metallic surfaces.

6. Contrasting Neutrals

Dulux and Plascon have announced their respective colours of 2019. It is interesting to note that in both cases, the choice is neutral. Dulux has chosen Crème Brulee, a beautiful caramel, while Plascon’s Ravine is a pale grey. Layering neutral textures and pairing dark and light neutrals will create drama and edge in a space.

HERE is so much going on at this time of year, and with Black Friday out of the way, we have a new Black to consider, but not nearly as much fun – the prospect of regular BLACKOUT’S! We are heading for a Candle Lit Festive Season, because according to Energy Consultant, Ted Blom, in an interview on ENCA (ENews, Channel Africa) , Eskom have been misleading the public with regard to the amount of coal left in the country – very little it seems.

He says the new ESKOM board needs to get their act together to find more coal supplies. “ They need a good turnaround plan, and they need to have it as soon as possible or we are going to see load shedding like we’ve never seen before” he says. “When there is no coal there is no energy. Also, Eskom have not been doing their maintenance correctly and the whole system is creaking because of lack of maintenance. The short term outlook is that at best ESKOM can generate about a third of power required right now” concludes Blom. So where does that leave the consumer? Once again, we need to cut right back on our electricity usage. Switch off all lights and unessential appliances when you leave the house. Buy electricity surge plugs for your precious appliances to stop the PC boards from blowing up. If you’re building a new home, get a solar energy system installed. Finally, buy in a good supply of fancy candles!!!

CO-EXISTING WITH MINI MAMMALS – I’ve written about our little primate cousins, vervet monkeys before, and since then, I have had a torrent of feedback from people with their concerns about the way monkeys are being treated. Recently, a baby female monkey was shot at with a pellet gun by a Zinkwazi resident. The pellet lodged in her lung and she very sadly died a slow and painful death. Do people not think of the consequences to these little creatures when they do something so mindlessly cruel one wonders? There are several ways of keeping monkeys off your property. Dogs keep them away; Use a long nozzled water pistol to prevent them coming into your home; Set up a feeding station away from the property. Also – until we get signs put up around the North Coast about monkeys and mongoose crossing the road, please drive with care when you see a troop of monkeys or family of mongoose on the side of the road. So many of them are being hit by speeding cars.

WAZULU-NATAL’S NORTH COAST has taken centre stage with continuous development, growth and investment taking place. This is fueled by over R2,2 billion in residential sales that take place year-on-year and growing investment from many of South Africa’s most influential property funds and developers. Insight into this growth and a real vision for the area has resulted in the largest private land owners within KZN masterminding a R76 billion masterplan for the North Coast, which is already in motion through its first component, Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate within Sheffield Beach.

“KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s fastest growing residential nodes. We are seeing semigration taking place from neighbouring provinces into KZN, especially within the North Coast, as well as a growing tourism and investment demand from around the world. That’s why a R76 billion masterplan through various stakeholders has been created to ensure the North Coast demand continues to ‘boom’ exponentially,” shares Murray Collins from Collins Residential. “To realise a project of this magnitude it has been imperative to launch key catalytic development

products into the market to ensure the longevity of the masterplan. I am proud to say that the R2,5 billion Zululami Coastal Luxury Estate was one of the game-changing developments within this area and the first component of this vision,” continues Collins. Zululami Coastal Luxury Estate launched in December 2016 presenting KwaZulu-Natal with an unrivalled coastal lifestyle with breath-taking ocean views, direct access to Christmas Bay beach, revitalised dams and wetlands, as well as world-class facilities. Spanning over 140-hectares, Zululami has already sold 80% of Phase 1 and is launching Phase 2 this December. “It’s just shy of two years since launching Zululami to the KZN market. It has been nothing short of successful. With the work taking place on Zululami, we expect to directly and indirectly employ over 5000 people. Construction has been in full tilt and as a result we can expect the Gatehouse to be complete by February 2019 and the first transfers take place within the first quarter of 2019. Zululami will have a massive impact on the KZN economy and masterplan for the North Coast,” explains Collins. The next major impetus project on the cards for the North Coast, and the next component of this masterplan, is the R10 billion development Seaton. Directly translated as ‘Sea Town’, this development borders Zululami and covers 411-hectares and stylishly encompasses an equine district, a lifestyle village,

What a WINE FESTIVAL it Was!

IMBITHI COUNTRY CLUB was delighted to host the fourth Annual North Coast Wine Festival at their Pavilion Room on Thursday, 15th November. In partnership with Meridian Wine Merchants.

THE ULTIMATE ROAST POTATOES Serves 6

Ingredients

6 x Large Potatoes 3 T Olive Oil 3 T Butter 1 T Finely Chopped Rosemary 50 g Grated Parmesan Salt & Black Pepper Sprinkle of truffle zest or a drizzle of truffle oil

Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. 2. Get a pot of salted water onto the stove, and bring to the boil. 3. Peel and chop the potatoes into cubes or wedges. 4. Once the water is rapidly boiling, plop the potato pieces in and boil for 15 minutes or until cooked through. 5. Remove the pot of potatoes from the heat, and strain off the excess water. 6. Leave the cooked potatoes to cool completely. 7. Once cooled, toss the potatoes in olive oil, melted butter, salt, pepper and chopped rosemary. 8. Roast for 40 minutes. Checking on them at about 20 minutes (half way) giving them a good shuffle around with a spatula, and returning them to the oven. 9. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the gorgeous golden crispy potatoes with truffle zest, finely chopped fresh rosemary and grated parmesan and serve immediately in all their freshly roasted glory!
