O, we are over half way through the year and heading towards another summer again…It's astounding… Time is fleeting… Madness takes its toll…

If you are experiencing a feeling of time flying by, you are not alone. There are two major schools of thought on the topic. One puts it all down to the psychological effect of aging, while the other says that time really is speeding up and that this is a scientifically proven fact.

It’s not quite as far-fetched as it sounds. Einstein calculated that the faster we go, the slower time goes and conversely the slower we go, the faster time goes. When an object’s speed increases toward the speed of light, time moves more slowly. For instance, if we were to be in a space craft moving at the speed of light for just a few days, then returned to earth, we’d find that in our absence, decades had passed.

And the subject of space travel has featured large on social media platforms since our last edition of L&S hit the stands.

According to various reports, the world's leading hacking group, Anonymous, released a video last month claiming that they had proof that NASA was about to announce an imminent close encounter of the third kind.

In a shaky YouTube video, Anonymous, famous for hacks and attacks on big websites, claimed NASA has said that aliens are on their way: "Latest anonymous message in 2017 just arrived with a huge announcement

about the Intelligent Alien Life!"

Anonymous wrote in the caption of their video, "NASA says aliens are coming!"

But apparently their selected quotes from NASA are purely speculative and all of them in the public domain. In fact, all the information contained in the video can easily be obtained through some fairly amateur Googling rather than hacking.

The most exciting things they point out in the video were all mentioned by NASA themselves recently when they did a live press conference on the latest discoveries from the Kepler mission.

The telescope found 10 new planets in habitable zones around stars.

Of the total 4,034 potential planets found by Kepler, about 49 are Earthsized and in the habitable zone of their stars, 30 of which have been verified.

A few years ago I read a fascinating book written by an old friend of mine, former musician and chemist now turned politician and alien hunter, Michael Tellinger. In his book, “Slave Species of the Gods” he hypothesises that we are in fact a product of genetic engineering – a “slave species” as he calls us, created by aliens to mine and store gold on this planet for them to collect later. He presents a fairly convincing case and it is well worth a read if you have ever pondered the purpose of our existence here.

Tellinger believes that the aliens who created us are indeed coming back soon for the gold that they use in its monatomic form as a super conductor for intergalactic travel, and when they do, we might not be too happy about it.

Stephen Hawking has suggested that

any alien creatures visiting Earth could be billions of years ahead of humans.

If so, he believes they will be vastly more powerful than we are and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria.

But then I suppose any intelligent life would be a pleasant change from what we have here at present. As a species, Homo sapiens has created havoc on this fragile planet that we call home. Donald Trump and Jacob Zuma are but two in a cast of many that stand out in this regard.

So, if the aliens are coming, and time is fleeting… we should probably be spending less time sweating the small stuff and more time enjoying the ride.

Such great feedback from you all, especially with regards to tricky things like contracts.

The CPA is pretty specific about this and you need to know your rights.

No matter WHAT business has issued the contract - this is what the CPA specifies: With regards to CONTRACTS automatic contract renewals are not legal.

Companies have to contact you – in writing – between 40 and 80 business days before your contract expires. They have to give you the option to continue your contract, change its terms or cancel it. Note that the contract will continue on a month-to-month basis until you make your choice. You will also be able to cancel contracts at any time.

No more waiting for the full 24 months to end. If you’re unhappy, give the company 20 days’ notice – in writing – and you’re home free. And while you won’t have to pay the full value of the contract, keep in mind that you still have to pay anything you owe the company up to the date of cancellation.

The company might also charge you a cancellation fee, possibly no more than 10 percent of the amounts still owed.

Something else that has come up often is that old favourite - VOETSTOOTS - Which literally means “what you see is what you get” It no longer exists. The CPA specifically identifies the consumer’s rights to goodquality products, in good working order, free of any substantial defects, and fit for their purpose. Suppliers will have to let you know of all defects – both obvious and hidden – of your purchase, and you have to agree to buying the product in that condition.

On the property front, “Voestoots” used

to protect sellers from the onerous responsibility of providing comprehensive information to the buyer regarding the condition of a property. Under the CPA the estate agent will be responsible for making detailed enquiries regarding the condition of the property and to disclose those defects that they are aware of. If not, buyers will have legal recourse and be able to claim compensation.

Still on the property front. Many consumers do not fully understand the legal jargon involved in contracts and agreements.

They also don’t feel comfortable at the point of purchase to ask questions or make changes. They often sign something with little or no changes made – to their detriment.

Under the CPA, estate agents will be obliged to use plain and understandable language in their agreements and ensure that consumers have a clear understanding of the legal implications before signing.

Look in the Mirror

HOMEGROWN AMAZON’S EXPANSIVE BIODOMES GET THEIR FIRST OF 40,000 PLANTS

R

ON GAGLIARDO JUST might have the most unusual job at Amazon. He spends most of his time tending to the thousands of plants destined for the Spheres, the 90-foot bulbous glass dome in the middle of Amazon’s sprawling campus in downtown Seattle.

Last week, Gagliardo watched as workers pulled an Australian tree fern off of an Amazon Prime truck, carried it through a particularly wide door in one of the spheres, and plopped it into the soil. Australian tree ferns are hardy, primordial plants that can reach 50 feet tall and "a favorite among greenhouse staff," says Gagliardo. Maybe it’s all the screen time or mounting evidence that employees excel when surrounded by nature, but tech companies suddenly love plants.

Airbnb installed a living wall in the lobby of its San Francisco headquarters.

Apple wants a small forest of 8,000 trees at its new campus in Cupertino. Adobe incorporated biophilic design into its offices in San Jose, California. Yet they all pale compared to Amazon and its three conjoined spheres, which are both meeting rooms and conservatories that will house more than 400 species of rare (and non-rare) plants.

When Amazon began building its new campus five years ago, it insisted on incorporating nature in the design. Employees can open windows in Doppler, the 38-story tower downtown.

And then there are those spheres, designed to bring the outdoors indoors within the confines of an office building. “The question was, how do we do this in a significant way,” says Dale Alberda, a principal architect at NBBJ, the firm behind Amazon’s new campus. “Just bringing plants into the office wasn’t going to cut it.”

The designers explored hundreds of shapes before choosing spheres. “It’s the most efficient way of enclosing volume,” Alberda says. The domes, made of glass panels on a steel frame, create enclosed biospheres that combine work and nature. That created a challenge, though, because plants and humans like different things. Plants thrive in warm, muggy environments. Humans do not. Amazon may love nature, but it still needs productive employees, so it compromised: The domes remain a pleasant 72 degrees with 60 percent humidity during the day, while at night they're a more plant-friendly 55 degrees with 85 percent humidity.

“It’s people first,” says Gagliardo. “Then we figured out what plants we could put around people.” Gagliardo started with plants found in similar climates.

Mid-elevation regions like the cloud forests of Ecuador, Costa Rica, and parts of China fit the bill. A crew will carefully crane a 60-foot tree from California into the domes next month. Once gardeners and horticulturalists plant everything, the dome and its 60-foot living wall will house vegetation from more than 50 countries.

Some of those plants, like moss, ferns and calatheas, have no problem with low light. Others,

like the African aloe tree, require full sun. The architects shunned the triangular panels you may know from Buckminster Fuller's famed geodesic dome in favor of the five-sided panels of a pentagonal hexecontahedron. That resulted in larger panels, which allows more sunlight into the sphere. Ninety LED fixtures with light sensors provide additional lighting when necessary.

All those plants need a lot of water, a task Gagliardo prefers to do by hand. “The collection is so diverse that putting everything on automatic sprinklers would be really difficult,” he says. Each day his team of horticulturists will wander the domes amid executives taking walking meeting and office drones doing whatever Amazon's office drones do, tending to plants and rooting around in the dirt.

"It's a dream job," Gagliardo says. "I never would have thought I'd be here at Amazon doing horticulture."

hat we are desperately in need of rain, cannot be denied and I hope that by the time you read this, we will have received showers of blessings to water our parched earth. It is some comfort that the Hazelmere Dam is 115.71% full – an enormous improvement on last year’s statistics. Please check your property and ensure that all gutters are cleared of debris and that waterways are open and not clogged, thereby eliminating any damage that might be caused if we have a repeat of the torrential rains that we experienced for the past two Julys – 2015 (200mls) and 2016 (375mls), when the heavens opened in torrents.

Geraniums are in abundance and the Nurseries are filled to capacity with masses of exciting plants to fill those empty spots. In a good garden, you should not see bare soil. A garden should be filled with shrubs, perennials and bright splashes of colour to excite the senses.

Get your fertilizers ready for application at the first sign of rain. We always recommend 3:1:5(26) Slow Release for shrubs and flower beds and 3:2:1(28) Slow Release for your lawns.

Most of the latter are learnt behaviours and generally have been reinforced by their humans - some intentional and some unintentional.

erhardt Oosthuizen and Kosie Nagel opened the original GONK in 2015. The 769hp Ferrari F12 TDF Is The Most Awesome Thing You’ll See Today

F

ERRARI have unveiled a new monster – the F12 TDF. The name is a tribute to the Tour de France road race which the firm dominated in the 1950s and 60s, and the car is now slouch: it’s even faster than the F12Berlinetta from which it’s derived.

The TDF can do 0-100 kmh in just 2.9 seconds with its 6.3liter V12 churning out 769hp, up from 730hp on the standard F12. Despite that it’s totally road legal so if you’ve got some spare change you could have one of these in your driveway any day soon.

The bodywork’s also been given a thorough going over, with the front tires 8 per cent wider than on the F12 and all-new body panels, meaning the downforce is nearly doubled at 200kph thanks to totally revamped aerodynamics. The spoiler at the rear is 6cm longer and 3cm higher than on the standard model.

What goes up must come down, and the good news is that the new one-piece brake calipers, as seen on the LaFerrari, are so good that the car can come to a complete standstill from 100kph in just 30.5 meters.

Maximum torque is up from 509lb/ft to 520lb/ft at 6,750 rpm. The F12 TDF can lap the manufacturer’s Fiorano test track in 1 minute and 21 seconds, which is just 1.3 seconds slower than the LaFerrari.

KWADUKUZA MAYOR CLLR. RICARDO MTHEMBU congratulated Durban surfer, Jordy Smith, on winning the 2017 Ballito Pro competition, defeating powerful Brazilian Willian Cardoso in an effervescent final to add the 2017 event title to his previous victories.

Jordy, real name, Jordan Michael Smith, won both the 2010 and 2011 Ballito Pro competitions. He has also won 2014 and 2016 Hurley Pro at trestles California.

In 2013, he won the Rio Pro in Brazil. All of these contests are part of the world championship tour. Smith grew up in Durban and started surfing at age 3.

He also attended Glenwood High School.

"We congratulate Jordy for his remarkable achievement which has demonstrated the rich talent that exists within our country's surfing fraternity especially amongst our youth. Jordy’s achievement augurs well for the development of our country’s sports and recreation,” said KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu.
