“It is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” JOHN LUBBOCK

O

h boy, my social calendar is filling fast. Bet yours is too. Everyone wants to throw a party or have a gathering of some kind with family and friends. It is exciting to actually have a social calendar. My husband and I keep one of those dry-erase revolving calendars on the wall, so we do not end up double scheduling. It has been sadly blank – except for the odd Zoom gathering – for much too long, which tempts us to accept every invitation. Travel is on again and plans for trips are being hatched. It is exciting to be scouring the web researching destinations, flights, ground transportation and sights to see upon arrival. Summer has traditionally been celebrated with three-day weekends and holidays at the cottage, camping in the woods or picnicking at one of the city’s lovely parks. Long days well-spent hiking, biking, boating and warm nights bathing in the warm air while stargazing. With all those invitations, plans and itineraries, it is easy to lose focus on these traditional delights of summer. One of the very few benefits of lockdowns and restrictions has been to force us to slow down on the frenetic pace that entertaining and travelling

can generate. ‘Back to real life’ can also mean back to some old habits, like overcommitting and overplanning. But now it is so great to gather with people we may not have seen for two or three years that it all seems justified. We can break that cycle by listening to John Lubbock and remembering to slow down to watch the clouds float across the sky or listen to the murmur of water. Those idyllic days of childhood – real or imagined – when we rolled down hills for fun or laid in the grass and speculated on the shapes of clouds or took off our shoes to wade into the still-cold waters of the Great Lakes – may seem far in the past. My promise to myself is that I will take Lubbock’s advice to pause and listen to water – walk on the beach or sit by the stream at our place on Lake Huron. What commitment can you make to yourself to pause and know that you are not wasting time when you take time?

TABLE is the new island AND ROUND IS THE NEW SQUARE FOR CREATIVE RENO By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

ABOVE Light and bright were the results of this kitchen makeover of a 1980s north London home.

10 Lifestyle July/August 2022

W

hen a London couple purchased a 1980s home in the city’s north end, they knew it was in need of an update. “I wanted to bring it into the 2000s,” says Martha, who planned the transformation with her husband Paulo. A facelift by Dynamic Kitchens, in conjunction with Anden Design Build, achieved everything they wanted and created a home with a “laid-back style that we can live in and enjoy,” Martha says. “It’s warm and inviting, and I love that it’s true to the family who lives there,” agrees Dynamic sales manager Alison Dudek, who oversaw the project. The renovation focused on the kitchen, the primary bedroom and its ensuite bathroom. The closed-off kitchen had dark oak cabinets and little natural light. To remedy this, a

large picture window was installed above a new sink, overlooking the backyard and pool. “They have a beautiful, park-like backyard and the (kitchen) window capitalizes on that view and lets in light to brighten the room,” Dudek says. “That window made a huge difference as soon as it was opened up,” Martha says. White cabinets, extended to the ceiling for additional storage space, and white quartz countertops further brightened the space. An alcove that had housed the original sink was converted to a beverage nook, with a smaller round sink and wine fridge. It also houses the microwave and coffee maker. “We love it and use it all the time, brewing our coffee there every day,” she says. A unique feature of the kitchen is a round oversized custom-crafted table, which is the same height as a standard island. It is topped with white quartz, matching the perimeter

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT The beverage nook is one of the couple’s favourite features of the reno, giving them a convenient place for making morning coffee, as well as storing and serving wine. • With large, high-end appliances, this lovely space makes cooking a pleasure. • A comfortable space for relaxing. • Even after ‘stealing’ five feet from the bedroom, it is still spacious. • The ensuite has a double-sink vanity. • The typical 80s corner tub was replaced by a more modern free-standing model. 

TABLE IS THE NEW ISLAND ~ Continued from page 11

A unique feature of the kitchen is a round oversized custom-crafted table, which is the same height as a standard island. counters. Martha says the long, somewhat narrow kitchen did not lend itself to an island taking up the centre of the room. “So, we came up with the idea of what we call ‘the round island’.” It was constructed by London’s Rustix Studio, noted for creating custom furniture. “They did an amazing job,” Martha says. “We love that table, and we’re there all the time.” This is her favourite element of the new kitchen, along with the bar nook. Swapping out an island for a table provides an atypical character to the space. Upstairs another major transformation expanded and modernized the primary bedroom and ensuite. Dudek notes the bedroom was “massive” and is still quite spacious after taking five feet of space to enlarge the bathroom. The glassed-in shower, originally just inside the door from the bedroom, was moved around a corner to a less obvious location. An oversized built-in tub was replaced by a more modern free-standing model. An existing sauna was retained, an element that Martha calls “awesome.” In addition, an original walk-in closet was moved and is now accessed from the ensuite. Part of that space was used to create a second-storey laundry room. 

WHETHER IT’S BEACH OR POOL, YOU’LL LOOK COOL THIS SUMMER By Jill Ellis-Worthington

W

hat is your least favourite shopping experience? Most women would say

trying to find a bathing suit that they feel and look good in. Putting on suit after suit in the change room and then having to look in the mirror that reflects every physical flaw – real or imagined. Slinking onto the store’s showroom floor because the mirror is too small to get the full picture. Trying to find the mirror in the darkest corner in the back of the store to avoid (usually imagined) pitying looks. Or perhaps doing the dreaded walk of shame in front of friends to get their opinions if you decided to do group shopping to share the pain. However, summer is here – the beach is beckoning, the pool is calling. It is time to throw off our outdated thoughts of how we experience this type of shopping. To enjoy summer to its fullest, don a colourful, flattering new bathing suit that makes you love how you look. What style are you thinking of this summer, because there is a swimsuit to suit every taste and every body. Show a little skin or a lot – from tanks to two-pieces – you will be able to find what you are looking for. Throw on a luscious, colourful cover-up and a pair of slinky sandals and head to your favourite place for fun in the sun. You will be well suited for the summer. 

Artistic director Gill Garret shows off Blyth Theatre’s amphitheatre.

athering to enjoy a communal experience - that is what is so exciting about the 2022 season at regional theatres. Actors, musicians, technicians, behind-the-scenes crews and audience members have all yearned for this the last two years. As Gill Garratt says, “Theatre can’t exist in a bubble. It can’t be captured on a Zoom screen. This summer is a reminder of the real vitality of it. We’re back in communion with the audience. That’s why we do it.”

28 Lifestyle July/August 2022

By Janis Wallace

Here is a look at how the area theatres are bringing back that shared experience.

Bring on Blyth The outdoor Harvest Stage is a gift at Blyth Festival Theatre, says artistic director Gil Garratt. It gives artists and audiences alike a safe, beautiful space. Plus, there is an added dimension with fields beyond and stars above. Built in 2021 with community support, the amphitheatre provides a way to bring the theatre and audiences together. “Huron country sunsets are world-renowned,” says Garratt. “The audience can watch the show with this incredible backdrop.”

LEFT The Drayton Festival Theatre. ABOVE Michael Learned returns to the Victoria Playhouse to star in On Golden Pond. David Hogan, co-artistic director, calls her “a masterclass in acting."

It is particularly appropriate for The Drawer Boy. “There is so much beautiful stuff about the stars. It will be really special.” The Drawer Boy itself is special, marking 50 years since The Farm Show, a Canadian play that kickstarted a boom in writing. A group of Toronto actors stayed on farms around Blyth, acquiring hands-on experience and gathering material to develop The Farm Show. The Drawer Boy is a fictitious account of their summer. “A cultural explosion happened in our community as a result of The Farm Show, and it will be part of what audiences feel. The theatre’s culture was born out of that moment.” With a mandate for new play development at Blyth, the outdoor stage meant a shift for writers. For example, playwright Marie Beath Badian was excited to think about an actual car for the world premiere of The Waltz.

“It’s informing the kind of work we’re choosing for it,” says Garratt of the stage. “It’s a very intimate space but different from a room where you turn off the lights and pretend you’re not there.” Sound travels well. John Ware Reimagined, by Cheryl Foggo, features original roots/folk music by Miranda Martini and Kris Demeanor, with five-part harmonies, guitar and percussion. Drew Hayden Taylor’s Cottagers and Indians examines the collisions between consumerism and environmentalism, Indigenous and non-Indigenous with wit and poignancy.

Victorious at Victoria Excited is the word that David Hogan uses to describe this season at the Victoria Playhouse. “We have an

exciting group of artists, and we’re so excited to open the doors. I am excited about the audience, to lead a healthy welcome-back season that everyone feels is safe, secure and celebratory. I am excited to conduct that as leader of this ship.” On board are familiar favourites, award-winners and new faces. On Golden Pond features four-time Emmy winner Michael Learned, with Order of Canada recipient Walter Borden. Rod Beattie brings his Wingfield Lost and Found. The music of legendary singers is featured in Divine Women, with songs arranged by music director Mark Payne. When Irish Eyes are Smiling is set in a pub. This playbill was scheduled for 2020. “It’s been two years in the making,” says Hogan. David Hogan and David Rogers are co-artistic directors and know their audience well. “The audience calls the 

theatre their own.” About 80 per cent kept their tickets from 2020 rather than asking for a refund. “It really saved us, and we’re grateful. We’re going to make sure they’re having a good time.” Hogan says they always plan to open with a celebration and close with a party. The closing party is his favourite in September. “I’m Irish, so I can’t wait to celebrate my people. When Irish Eyes are Smiling is set in an Irish pub that speaks to me heart and soul.” He directs On Golden Pond. “It’s a heart-warming, loving story. I’m excited to be back with Michael (who starred in Driving Miss Daisy a few years ago). You have to come to see Michael Learned. She’s a masterclass in acting.” Hogan also praises Borden, who plays Norm, and has won awards for his acting and activism.

Beattie's wry Walt Wingfield battles bees and other issues in the last installment of the series, Wingfield Lost and Found. “We’re always excited to open, and this particular year it’s about the pure joy of sharing songs, stories and dance with people - and we’re never going to take it for granted. It’s the season worth waiting for. Most importantly, I’m just excited to be gathering again.”

Premieres in Port Stanley

Port Stanley Festival Theatre celebrates with three world premieres. “It’s a first for us,” says Tony Scalfani, theatre manager. “Two of the three world premieres evolved from our playwright festival, a workshopping system, and Norm was willing to have us premiere his new play.” The latter refers to Norm Foster’s My Hero; the first two are Our House by Murray Furrow, and The View From Here by Jamie Williams.

This summer’s season Scalfani says is “six shows full steam ahead with full casts, full crews.” The theatre’s mandate is producing Canadian shows, and it receives Ontario Arts Council grants to fund the development of plays. Artistic director Simon Joynes distributes the funding to playwrights and two or three are chosen for the workshops. Professional actors perform the plays for an audience that provides feedback, which becomes part of the selection process for the season. A new work can be scheduled for the following year, a future date or picked up by another theatre. The View From Here explores what happens when things do not go as planned and Our House is a comedic take on the meaning of home. “The audience will get a kick out of seeing the final interpretation,” says Scalfani. “They get to see it come to life.” 

Drive to Drayton

Buying the Farm and Good Ol’ Country Gospel are ideal shows for the idyllic setting at the Drayton Festival Theatre. Artistic director and CEO of Drayton Entertainment Alex Mustakas says a variety of factors are considered when matching shows and theatres. Drayton provides the right backdrop for a rural romantic comedy. Buying the Farm is a multi-generational play, a love note to farming and a look at the challenges of maintaining the family farm. The smaller theatre is also a good testing ground. “If it (Buying the Farm) does well, it could appear in 2023 in St. Jacob’s or Grand Bend.”

Soften a room with Custom Drapery.

Audience-centred programming is important to Drayton Entertainment for all its seven stages. A multiple subscription system allows people to choose any production at several venues. For example, Mamma Mia!, Driving Miss Daisy and The Sweet Delilah Swim Club are playing in St. Jacob’s. Drayton also offers options for limited or full capacity audiences to suit theatregoers’ comfort levels. “There is something for everyone,” says Mustakas. 

Huron Country Playhouse celebrates 50 years

lex Mustakas may say he does not work, but a lot of thought and effort has been put into the 50th anniversary season of Huron Country Playhouse, one of the most historic playhouses in the country. “Over the years I never said I was going to work. I’m going to the theatre, to a rehearsal, to a production meeting. It’s a life’s calling. Not everybody gets to do that. I’m surrounded by a team that believes in theatre as much as I do. At the end of the day, it’s about the audience.” The audience was front and centre while making plans for the 2022 season. “For me, it’s about the storytelling and the connection with the audience. We missed the audience. I want all the shows to be good.” The playbill, the venues, the capacity levels were weighed for a “cautious reopening,” according to Mustakas. “The season will appeal to all ages. We want to meet everyone’s comfort level.” Safer shows were selected to ensure the health of actors, technicians, musicians and everyone behind the scenes, says Mustakas. Patrons can choose limited or full capacity options. During the two and half years the theatre was closed, Mustakas interviewed artists for Backstage Pass, a digital series. He says the common answer to what they missed

most was the audience. “The audience is part of the storytelling. There is nothing like the in-person communal experience. We sit as one, applaud as one, laugh as one and sometimes shed a tear as one.” The Sound of Music will provide a chance to do all of that. “It’s the quintessential family show. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate show with kids, parents and grandparents coming together. It’s a great way to reopen the theatre with a classic musical. There is nothing more pleasing than seeing three generations at the theatre.” Appealing to all ages is high on the list of factors. Fiddler On The Loose features London native Jesse Grandmont who has toured Canada, the U.S. and around the world. The show is a blend of music, dancing, comedy and fiddling with country, Celtic, classical, bluegrass and pop tunes. “It’s highly entertaining,” says Mustakas. It Runs In The Family is a classic

British farce with enough plot twist and turns to prove laughter is the best medicine. Good Ol ’Country Gospel, Frozen Jr. and The Sweet Delilah Swim Club run at the South Huron stage. “Some theatre makes you think, some theatre is for great entertainment and some is pure escapism,” says Mustakas. Finding the sweet spot of all those aspects, Huron Country Playhouse has grown from a rented tent in 1972. Actors lived and worked out of a centuryold barn that is now the Mainstage that seats 650. The smaller South Huron Stage, formerly Playhouse II, seats 300. In 2000, Huron Country Playhouse merged with Drayton Festival Theatre to become Drayton Entertainment. And while they might like to have grand festivities to mark the 50th anniversary, maintaining cautious care of cast, crew and audience takes priority. Instead, a documentary of the roots of the theatre, its current role and plans for the future is being distributed. In a press release, Mustakas wrote: “Years from now, we’ll all talk about where we were, and what shows we saw, the year that theatre came back.” For many, they will talk about taking part in live theatre as ‘one of my favourite things’ just like Maria in The Sound of Music. 

At the heart of art FRAMING & ART CENTRE SHOWCASES LOCAL ART AND MORE

A

By Janis Wallace

combination of experience, knowledge and adaptability has provided the foundation for the Framing & Art Centre owner Sarah White to grow her business over the past 21 years. She says she was “born into it” as her parents Jim and Dorothy Howell were the original owners. “My Dad still comes in once or twice a week to cut and build my frames. He loves to do it. We’ve switched roles: I used to work for my dad; now he works for me.” White moved the business from its original Kent Street location to Horton Street in 2020. She describes the new place as having an industrial, Toronto feeling. A glass garage door lets in light and allowed her to conduct consultations through the various pandemic restrictions. She set up a table in front of the door and showed clients options for their pieces. The move also prompted her to return to showcasing local artists. A call for submissions was so popular, she is now booking the two-month feature

into 2024. The store also carries work by other artists, including a local potter. An idea wall with gift items such as jewelry, leather and cards, anchors one side of the front room. “The business has changed quite a lot. People have more access to art. They’re buying it online. Canvases are popular. We stretch and put them on a frame. The trend is for big pieces,” she adds. White identified a need for art installations and added that service to the business. Art lovers are sometimes challenged when hanging artwork, especially large pieces or in difficult places such as over a stairwell, so White provides consultations. She and her staff love the challenge of specialty items. For one client, they designed a shadow box for soapstone carvings that could be opened to handle the pieces. “There is always something different coming in. I’m surrounded by art. The joy I have from what we do is working with the client, designing together, and seeing their face when they come in to see the completed work.” 

A real contender AWARD-WINNING MODERN COTTAGE RESPECTS HISTORY By Ellen Ashton-Haiste ABOVE Paying homage to the heritage of the original structure, this cottage was rebuilt with modern flair complemented by stone and wood accents that reflect its lakefront location.

study in contrasts is how this lakefront home, located near Grand Bend, is best described. Its distinguished heritage is reflected in the modern design and indoor spaces mirroring outdoor spaces all added up to make this residence worthy of winning two awards. Located in historic Oakwood Park, the home has its own storied history as the one-time summer retreat for Ontario premier John Robarts. That heritage was something the owners wanted to respect while creating a more modern aesthetic

for an all-season haven. The result – a rebuild from the ground up – was achieved through collaboration between architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson and Oke Woodsmith Building Systems. It was excellent teamwork, says architect McMichael Ruth, which began with the owners’ vision of combining modern architecture with sensitivity to the neighbourhood. This led to the creation of “a unique interpretation of a heritage cottage in a very modern way.” The cottage blends well with its environment, agrees Oke Woodsmith president Randall Oke, citing the use of

natural elements, including wood and stone from the original cottage, as a key to that success. “It is a modern style but with the mix of the stone it fits in with the community aesthetics and the natural surroundings.” The project garnered two London Home Builders’ Association 2021 Awards of Creative Excellence for Oke Woodsmith: best new kitchen in a home over $750,000 and overall best new exterior. The interior was designed to create a balance with the outdoors, Ruth says. 40 Lifestyle July/August 2022

ABOVE An additional workspace – with a second sink and dishwasher – makes preparation and clean-up easy for large gatherings.

“The floor plan mirrors the original cottage design around an outdoor central courtyard. So the new cottage has a three-season space in the middle.” Accessed from the living room on one side and dining room and kitchen on the other, this space can be opened to the outside or closed in with retractable screening and glass doors. “It offers an amazing way to be both indoors and outdoors,” he says. “It’s a great spot for entertaining,” Oke says. “There’s a large overhang at

the back that creates more entertainment area. The house entertains on its own, but the expanse of the landscape and patios make it that much larger.” The interior has several spaces for congregating. The living room is anchored by a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with the original cottage’s wood mantel and stone. An oversized dining room accommodates a custom table seating 16. The kitchen features a central island and dual pantries. The main level includes three family bedrooms and there are an additional three guest 

rooms and a bathroom on the lower level. Another nod to heritage is the re-creation of a Robarts-era bar, hidden behind wall panelling. Oke says the plan was to preserve the original bar. “But it fell apart when we started to work with it, so we mimicked it and made it look identical, with a red arborite counter and alumi-

num trim.” It is still concealed behind a panel that, when pressed, springs open to reveal a slice of the past. Another favourite spot for the owners, Ruth notes, is a breakfast nook built over the entrance with views straight through the cottage, a banquette along the windows and a round stone table, sourced

from a Stratford restaurant auction, as the centerpiece. “The owners had a great vision, and we were able to bring it to life,” Ruth sums up. “We took a cottage and created a modern home,” Oke concurs. 

THE KEY TO NAVIGATING STRESS

By Jill Ellis-Worthington

This is not just talk therapy, it’s listening and understanding how our body informs us and has a lot to say about how we heal our emotions.” PATRICIA BERENDSEN

42 Lifestyle July/August 2022

T

houghts whirling, difficulty deciding at the moment, shortness of breath, heart beating fast, jaw clenching! All are symptoms of stress and Patricia Berendsen knows that these feelings can manifest deep in our bodies, having long-term effects. She is a registered psychotherapist, couples and family therapist and social worker, with a practice in London – Patricia Berendsen and Associates. One of the techniques Berendsen uses is the somatic approach to therapy. She describes it as “the process of exploring how the body can help us resolve trauma.” “This is not just talk therapy, it’s listening and understanding how our body informs us and has a lot to say about how we heal our emotions.” Since the past two and half years have been traumatic for people in many different ways, she has some advice to offer about dealing with it.

Be honest with yourself The weight of having too many things to do in too little time has been exacerbated for many during the pandemic, especially working parents. With kids and work in the same place and having to deal with both at the same time left parents feeling conflicted. Berendsen asserts that often this type of anxiety comes from “not living our values.” The concept of family over work – a commonly heard mantra – isn’t reflected in how some balance their time. Negative physical results often occur when they are spending more time working than with family. “The dissidence of not living your core values causes stress in our systems,” she adds. This calls for a tough conversation with ourselves. “If work is your priority, admit it.” She adds that getting honest with yourself can resolve this dissidence, resulting in fewer stress symptoms.

Take time to notice how you are feeling. “Let your body be the guide. Allow time to get to know yourself and your physical responses that are often ignored in the ‘hurry.’” She recommends doing a body scan to pinpoint your “hotspots,” where anxiety is manifesting as pain. “Is my stomach tight; am I hardly breathing?” Berendsen notes in the busyness of daily life that people are rushing so much, jumping from task to task, that they ignore how their bodies are feeling in the moment. “People take better care of their cars than they do of their bodies. They know they need to take it in for an oil change or something will go wrong. When it comes to our bodies, we don’t do that. We expect them to keep functioning without any attention.” After noticing hotspots, we are tempted to force our bodies to relax, telling the shoulders to go down or gulping in air. Berendsen recommends a different technique. She “invites” cooperation. “I take my hand and put it on my shoulder and invite it to soften. It’s comforting. I put my hand to my chest and ask ‘would you be willing to soften?’ This tells your body you are finally paying attention.”

Do nothing The idea of not being busy in a demanding world is a foreign concept. Berendsen recommends blocking out some time – it can be just a few minutes – to do nothing but pay attention to your breathing and enjoy the silence. “This is important because it resets your nervous system.”

Turn off devices Often recommended for those who have trouble sleeping, Berendsen thinks it is also important during the day because it affects the quality of relationships. When your phone is in sight, it can cause us to lose focus on the person in front of us. “Because of how we’ve been socialized, we can’t resist looking at it. The bings and beeps distract us. Even if you don’t answer it, you’re stressed thinking about who was calling, which means you are not fully involved in the conversation.”  July/August 2022 Lifestyle 43

Negative self-talk and having unrealistic expectations of ourselves is what Berendsen calls “being a bully to ourselves.” Crash dieting or going to the gym seven days a week to lose those ‘Covid 19’ is unsustainable and then we are disappointed in ourselves. “We set ourselves up for failure and then beat ourselves up when we fail,” she says, adding that setting sustainable goals is key to kindness. “I’m going to walk for 10 minutes during my lunch hour. Doing that consistently, for the rest of your life, is much better,” she adds.

Act like a kid Take a mid-day break to do something you enjoyed as a child, like colouring, writing a letter to a pen pal or having a long chat with a friend on the phone. Use this child-like energy to pursue long-lost hobbies like buying a soccer ball to kick around or a basketball to shoot hoops or take up dancing again through classes or around the kitchen. Berendsen says, “Reexperience joy and playfulness in your life.” Feeling that type of joyfulness can boost endorphins helping the body to better deal with stressors.

Noticing positive feelings during all of these activities, remembering them and reflecting on them during times of extreme pressure will help you better pilot pressure situations. “This can soften negative feelings, making you more able to ‘metabolize’ the anxiety, so it is not so stressing,” says Berendsen. 

Cora Couture brings the world to you

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

aking women look good and feel fabulous is what Cora Couture is all about. This small chain of shops, in four locations across southern Ontario, specializes in European fashions for women of all ages. Partners Elizabeth Buczek and Alicia Kokot launched their flagship store in Toronto’s Bloor West neighbourhood 17 years ago and have since opened another in Collingwood and two in Stratford. According to Kokot, the latter locations have individual profiles. “The Market Place store has a casual vibe, while the Ontario Street location features a more upscale style,” she says. All of the shops carry primarily European designs, as well as some from Canada, the United States and Australia. The owners say that all of their stock is created for comfort, intrigue and beauty. “Our base is beautiful European designs with a flair and an edge,” says Kathleen Roth, who works out of the Collingwood shop. She describes the look as trendless. “It’s avant-garde, interesting and edgy, yet elegant. We’re definitely different from what is generally expected in fashion.” The quality and craftsmanship, as well as the materials, are top of the line, Roth says. That is definitely a factor setting Cora Couture apart from other women’s wear retailers, Kokot says. “We have high-quality fabrics and many natural fibres.” As examples, she lists linen, flax, wool, silk and Tencel among their offerings. The latter is derived from natural raw materials and produced using environmentally friendly processes. The shops also carry accessories – jewellery, scarves, handbags and shoes – also sourced from European designers. “We have it all to spice up our collection and make it complete,” Kokot says. Cora Couture’s clientele includes women of all, ages, sizes and body shapes. The staff works with them to

Do they feel more beautiful wearing clothes that fit their body type and are made of stunning materials? That’s our whole premise.” 

A NEW PHASE

Vranic Homes expands offerings in the Clear Skies community By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A

s new homes continue to take shape in the sold-out second phase of Ilderton’s Clear Skies neighbourhood, Vranic Homes is breaking ground in Phase 3 this summer. “I have 23 lots in Phase 3, ranging from 36-foot frontage to just over 50 feet for some pieshaped parcels on a cul-de-sac, backing onto a natural treed area,” John Vranic says. The Sifton community’s third phase will be comprised of 57 custom detached homes, promoted as family friendly living. Vranic, who built 10 homes in Clear Skies’ Phase 1 and 19 in Phase 2, has a long-standing relationship with Sifton, having built houses in its Deer Ridge and Riverbend developments. Priced from $1 million, clients can choose from one- and two-storey floor plans; they can work with Vranic’s designer to customize. These feature open-concept layouts plus his signature high-end finishes and brick exteriors. All are showcased in a model home opening this summer. Vranic is again offering a $7,500 package for window coverings through Made In The Shade Blinds & More. This replaced a previous appliances package, sidelined by pandemic-instigated supply issues. “The clients are loving the new package,” he says. “It’s something buyers often overlook, and they’re thrilled they can now pre-order blinds, shutters and curtains confident they’ll be installed before move-in.” Vranic is finding a significant percentage of buyers are coming from the Greater Toronto Area, attracted by lower prices and taxes in Ilderton, which he says are 20 per cent less than London proper. They are also attracted by the homey, small-town charm. It is a rural community offering convenient access to trail systems and natural spaces, many of which are at Clear Skies’

THE AUDI ATTRACTION FACTOR Draws customers to the luxury brand dealership

nowledgeable staff, premium customer service and a strong commitment to the London community have earned Audi London a large and loyal client base, says Faye Wang, the dealership’s new car sales manager. “We have always been a family-owned business and, as such, we truly care about our customers and have built a loyal following. Many clients have supported us for more than 20 years and have purchased numerous vehicles,” she says. “They refer friends and family.” Some of those customers began coming to Dalmar Motors, the Volkswagen dealership founded in 1953 by the Dalglish family. It began selling Audis in 1969 and eventually opened a separate franchise showroom and service centre for the luxury brand. Many patrons have been with Dalmar Motors for so long that their loyalty has been passed onto the younger generations, says Wang. The Audi dealership staff boasts a combined 30-plus years of experience and technicians are factory trained and certified by Audi, she says. Three of those staffers recently competed in the national finals of the company’s 2022 Audi Twin Cup technical and service performance challenge. Three technicians and one service advisor achieved Top 10 status nationally, and

shop foreman Mike Arbour took first place in the technician category. He will accompany the brand’s Team Canada to Germany this summer to take part in the international finals. Wang notes that the London company is an Audi Sport dealership, marketing and servicing RS-Audi Sport models. It also offers a selection of electric cars. “Not all dealerships are authorized to be electric, and Audi Sport specialized,” she says. Dalmar Motors and Audi London also take pride in sponsoring and participating in various community events. These include the 2022 London Run for Ovarian Cancer and the Highland Country Club Care for Kids Charity Classic. They also support the Middlesex branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association and London’s Pawlooza Dog Festival, which raises funds for ARF Ontario animal rescue, and LEADS Employment Services for people with disabilities. “It’s our way of paying back to the community and showing that we care,” Wang says. “We pride ourselves in being one of the oldest VW dealers in Canada and, because of the high standard of quality work by our devoted team of employees, we have been fortunate to continue to expand every year.” 
