T
he North Coast 500 – a route to be ticked off the bucket list in a hurry or something that has to be travelled at leisure in order to be savoured to the max? It’s your choice. But whichever option you choose there is no doubt that this route covers some of the most jawdropping scenery in Scotland. If it’s an escape from the hum-drum of life, a chance to breathe in gloriously smog-free air and to connect with nature at its grandest, then this is for you. So much is lost by driving by and not stopping to explore all the sites that pepper this route, some of which are steeped in history, others in Celtic legend. Bottom line – it is an unforgettable experience and one which professional photographer Morag Martin, Ceamara Photography will not forget for a very long time, if ever. Morag and her partner meticulously planned their trip, which was to span seven days and to take them right off the beaten track. With the current situation it is not advisable to head off on

a whim and accommodation has to be booked in advance, somewhat taking the spontaneity out of things but, sadly, this is the way of the world at the moment. Carefully planning their route, the sights they wished to see and their chosen accommodation – both bed and breakfast and campsite – they came up with a schedule that was to net them some indelible memories. Seven days, a total of 784 miles, petrol costs of £90 and accommodation costs of £236 resulted in a wonderful holiday.

To detail all of the places that they visited would cover many pages so space restricts us to mentioning just a few – but if these whet your appetite, start planning your own North Coast 500 now! Just remember that, if you wish to do some of the walks that are available, do take along stout walking boots and sensible clothing. Leaving from Inverness, they travelled anticlockwise to the Black Isle where, amongst many wonderful destinations, is Rosemarkie Fairy Glen – a lovely wooded walk that takes in two

waterfalls. Then on to the Mermaid of the North, an 11ft high sculpture and a ‘cousin’ of the lady outside Copenhagen. The following day to the delightfully named Whaligoe Steps, an almost sheer drop from headland to beach that is not for the faint-hearted. In a way this is the foot soldier’s equivalent of the Pass of the Cattle at Applecross, where the road simply disappears from sight as you round what seem to be interminable bends in the road. On day three a welcome stop at the Dunnet Bay Distillery and then on to Smoo Cave on day four and the Drumbeg viewpoint on day five. Time to rest and gaze out over the water and lose yourself in your thoughts.

The penultimate day they visited the Victoria Falls (not to be confused with the falls of the same name on the Zambezi River in central Africa). Although undeniably smaller the falls are equally beautiful. Home beckons on day seven and what better way to round off a memorable trip than by heading for Wester Hardmuir Fruit Farm, either to pick your own fruit or to browse in their well-stocked shop and stock up on the freshest of produce. Seven days of pure escapism, filled with visits to places that some of us probably have not heard of. What more could anyone possibly ask for? MERMAID OF THE NORTH

T
he Smith family at Byres farm, wanted to do something to make people smile during the difficult times of Covid and at the same time raise money for a great cause. They decided to give growing Sunflowers a go. The cheery yellow flowers always made them smile and they thought it would cheer people up seeing them growing in the fields.

They gave people the chance to come and enjoy a walk in the countryside and at the same time take some of these cheery blooms home, in return for a donation to MFR Cash For Kids appeal.
The money raised would then put a smile on even more faces – A double smile creator! Growing Sunflowers in the North East of Scotland was very experimental but they thrived. The biggest issue was that the deer seemed to love them too! Luckily, there were plenty to go round, to raise money for MFR Cash for kids and help out the local wildlife populations! The first weekend was a sell out event with 80 car parking slots. It was the first time doing this and without knowing how many sunflowers people would pick they did not want to sell too
many tickets and have disappointed customers. However by Sunday evening 80 carloads of customers had all gone home laden with sunflowers and they still had thousands left! The event ran for two whole weeks and three weekends with everyone enjoying the experience including the photo opportunities that had been set up, hand painted signs and a straw bale sofa. It was great seeing lots of photos which were then posted on social media. The final total raised for MFR Cash for Kids was a fantastic £3547. The event was so successful the Smith family are already thinking how they can make next year’s event bigger and better. If you missed 2020 definitely a date for your diary in 2021.

f you had been asked to list your most useless and un-asked for presents from Christmas 2019, top of that list would surely be a 2020 Year Planner. 2020 has been a ‘non-year’ thanks to a certain virus that shall remain nameless. Events – and, to a very large extent, everyday life itself – have been cancelled left, right and centre, postponed indefinitely or erased completely, probably never to return. However, we do have Christmas to look forward to. The excitement is mounting, shops and supermarkets are starting to gear themselves up Where possible, let’s make a concerted effort to support our local shops as they do have a wonderfully wide range of exceptional goods, a lot of them made by local artisans. Many of our businesses, irrespective, have suffered this year. Now that we can venture out
please remember that shop owners also have their own personal bills and mortgages to pay, as well as their premises’ overheads. Could we all please try to put the mouse into hibernation and frequent the local shops instead? Each and every purchase makes a difference and helps the economic wheels to turn. Local shops have already started to advertise how they intend to make this Christmas a memorable one. Make sure that most (if not all) of your purchases are from our local shops, many offer an on-line service too if you cannot manage to get out. This way we can all help to make a difference in getting that economic jigsaw puzzle complete once again. Get your pens and paper out and start your lists – half the fun is in the planning!

magine being shortlisted for a prestigious award – and then imagine winning it! This surely must be one of the most wonderful feelings for any shop owner and something to be cherished. This is exactly what happened to Ewe & Me in Grantown and all credit to the three generations of family who have made it possible. Their story started in Gairloch 40 years ago with mother Janet opening the doors for the first time and then moved on to Grantown, just before the new millennium. In the interim the family also opened a branch in Aberlour, successfully run by daughter Sara until her relocation to Grantown a few years ago to help run not only the gift shop but also to open a clothing shop – Ewe Too – directly opposite the original gift shop. At the beginning of the year they were excited to hear that they had been nominated, along with five other Scottish retailers, for the award - the Greats Gift Retailer Awards - which is run by Progressive Gifts and Home Magazine

and is now in its 18th year. These awards are universally recognised as being true accolades of achievement and to even be nominated is an achievement in itself. Unfortunately, because of the current pandemic, the awards ceremony in London had to be a virtual event with a live screening on Wednesday 30th September. Janet, Sara and Sara’s daughters Lucy and Annie all got dressed up for the screening, bubbles flowed and their smiles said it all when their name was announced as the Scottish winner. They have worked tirelessly and richly deserve this award; if you have not been in this wonderful shop then do yourselves a favour and pay a visit. THE RE:STORE
Christmas cake Serves: 16 | Prep: 20 mins plus soaking overnight Cooking Time: 2 ½ to 2 ¼ hours INGREDIENTS 250g raisins 250g sultanas 250g apricots, chopped 400ml strong cider + enough to feed the cake 225g butter 250g golden granulated sugar 2 tsp ground cinnamon 50g dark chocolate 4 medium free-range eggs 125g chopped mixed nuts 250g plain wholemeal flour 100g SR white flour
METHOD 1. Start the night before, placing the raisins, sultanas and apricots in a large bowl and pour in 300ml of the cider. Cover and leave to soak overnight. 2. Cut the butter into chunks and place in a large pan with the sugar, the soaked dried fruit, the cinnamon and the remaining cider. Heat gently, stirring frequently until the butter has melted. Continue to cook over a low heat for 10 minutes or until the fruit has plumped up and the juices are thickened and syrupy. Let the juices bubble gently and don’t cover the pan. Remove from heat, stir in the chocolate and leave to cool for 30mins. 3. Preheat the oven to 140 degrees C, gas mark 1. Line the base and sides of a 20 cm round (or 18cm square) tin with baking parchment. (Top Tip – use the bags your mix came in!) 4. Beat the eggs into the fruit mixture then stir in the nuts and flours until evenly combined. Turn into the tin and level the surface. Secure a strip
of brown paper or several thicknesses of newspaper around the tin with string to prevent the cake drying out during baking. 5. Bake in a preheated oven for about 2 hours until firm and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin then turn out. 6. Make in November as a Christmas cake – it can be stored for six to eight weeks wrapped in double thickness of foil over the paper lining. Keep it moist by feeding once or twice with the cider. Peel away the foil, prick the top all over with a skewer and drizzle with 4tbsp cider. Wrap up again until the next feed.

NEW CHECK AND PROTECT SYSTEM
J
ust over a month ago, the Scottish Government introduced new measures requiring indoor hospitality venues to record patron contact information. Visit Moray Speyside and Moray Chamber of Commerce worked together to launch Check & Protect, offering businesses a simple, secure and efficient way of recording customer contact details in line with the Scottish Government regulations. Moray Speyside Check and Protect was launched just 6 weeks ago and is already being used by more than 70 businesses in the region. More than 6,500 individuals have signed up, collectively checking-in more than 25,000 times. Customers have only to sign up once to the system, using their smartphone camera, and they can then seamlessly check in to any registered business with their phone. Patron data is securely stored for the required 21-day period and is then automatically deleted. If businesses become aware of a potential issue, their check-in data can be accessed by NHS track & trace or the local authority within minutes. A business dashboard allows manual entry of patron data for those who do not have a smartphone by means of a simple webpage which can be accessed on a laptop, desktop or tablet.

FASHION The Culotte Kilt 6m of Japanese selvedge denim, deeply pleated with a mix of wide knife and box pleats, conceals a bifurcated under-apron, hidden by a double pleating section at the back. This example is mixed with traditional sashiko cloth and vintage trimmings, with a wide, high waistband and bespoke leather work details. Vintage kimono material is used to line the two deep front pockets, for a cycling friendly, go-anywhere garment.
Twisting Tradition Andrea Chappell, a kiltmaker based in Forres, is expanding the possibilities of our pleated highland dress, by creating modern designs using traditional techniques in her bespoke, contemporary kilts.
It’s over twenty years ago now that I trained as a designer at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, developing a passion for print using traditional letterpress, which grew into a love affair with heritage crafts. Since then, I’ve practised as an interpretation designer for museums and visitor experiences, collaborating with craftspeople to interpret the stories of people and places at heritage sites at home and 26abroad.
As an epilogue to each of those stories I began making a kilt to commemorate each project. As a garment historically associating its wearer with a place, or people, it was a fitting way to mark a moment, using textiles related to the location and embedding my own artwork within the linings. It was also a much-loved part of my wardrobe, as since childhood my mother made my own kilts for school. This commemoration soon became my personal tradition (which my husband would describe as an addiction), as well as my daily ‘uniform’ throughout my professional life. In the early days I commissioned my kilts from Howie Nicholsby of 21st Century Kilts, but following our move to Moray I found the Keith Kilt School, where I began training in the traditional, hand stitched method myself. Kiltmaking extended naturally from my daily
design life, where interpretation and invention is fundamental to my role. Very quickly my curiosity led to the development of more contemporary designs. Sometimes this was driven by necessity (adding pockets into the pleats to help budget airline travel, or creating culottes underneath so I could ride my bike), at other times ideas have come from historic research. I find offering an alternative to tartan has been particularly appealing to women, seeking something more elegant and flattering than a version of their male counterparts formal attire. It’s very encouraging to see a more diverse market developing for the kilt, especially one that supports independent makers, using traditional skills to produce kilts of exceptional quality, rather than factory produced fashion versions. The majority of kilts I make use my own collection of vintage, deadstock, or end of roll textiles, which encourages responsible, resourceful production, without waste. They are an enduring, as well as versatile garment, offering a life of wear for more than one generation. This very slow, but sustainable
means of making is sadly an endangered craft, but with greater recognition from a modern audience we may hopefully sustain these skills for many more generations to come.” Two kilts, three generations: This was my grandad’s kilt, from his days serving as an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander. His heavyweight Black Watch has allowed a lot of room for alteration, passing to my mum then onto me. Altering it to fit me prompted some new additions, four more pleats, with deeper box and kick pleats at each side, a fringe edge at both sides rather than one, bespoke leatherwork with four straps, new buckles and rivets. The kilt I made for my mum is also brought in here, by using her Cheviot tweed as a piped trim. Her Cairngorm tweed kilt also includes a piece of her father’s kilt along the fringe edge and in her hand drawn lining I illustrated the sunflowers I have always associated with my mum.

DEVELOPING A PASSION FOR GENEALOGY By Clare Wilson
F
amily history research has spiked since the lockdown and has seen people taking up the hobby as a way to fill their time.
I started my own research 16 years ago to help pass the cold dark winters having always been curious about finding out more about my roots. My first task was to visit family members who were able to pass on information left by previous generations along with old photographs and documents. I must advise if you are thinking about taking up this hobby don’t leave this too late, otherwise your relatives may be gone along with the information they could have passed you! Armed with this information I quickly realised how addictive the hobby can be as I searched my way through birth, marriage and death entries, wills and census returns and before I knew it the winter had passed quicker than usual. Better weather always brings a new opportunity to search for gravestones or visit the towns where ancestors lived. In some ways this means you get to visit places that perhaps you would never have otherwise visited. More recently I have been researching my Smith, Paterson, Ross and Troup ancestors in the Banff and Forglen areas which gives the perfect excuse for weekends away! I would definitely recommend joining a Family History Society as most have their own office loaded with records and books that as a member you can access for free. Most hold

regular meetings with speakers which is a good way to learn more about a variety of family history topics and it’s a good way to meet likeminded people. As your knowledge progresses you start to dig further by searching in newspapers, directories, military records, maps and any other interesting records housed in local libraries or archives. This is what adds character to these family members.

One thing I never tire of is sitting in an archive looking through an old document or book that’s 100+ years old and seeing my ancestor’s signature…it’s amazing to think that at one time they leant over the same book. After several years researching I decided to take my passion further and after taking several evening classes at a nearby University I began to study the subject at Post Graduate level. This opened up so many more records to me as did the knowledge of how to document sources correctly and hunt down elusive records. It’s been a worthwhile journey and a topic that has become a passion, so much so that it is now my full-time career! As a Professional Genealogist with Treehouse Genealogy I now carry out family history research for clients worldwide which can involve anything from complete family trees to single
ancestor studies, house and place research and military research. I even get to share my passion by taking beginners’ workshops with community groups. Over the years I have also developed a special interest in researching local murders and men from throughout the Commonwealth who served with Bomber Command during WW2. HOW SUFFERING TRANSFORMS US I By Suzy Beaumont
t’s fair to say I was pretty much just coasting along– life wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t thriving either, however it was about to take a severe turn for the worse and I was to face the biggest challenges of my life that would eventually lead to an incredible transformation.
In 2010, my sister and mum were both diagnosed with terminal cancer. I had already lost my dad to cancer 11 years earlier and had never really recovered, but the succession of losses that were to follow pushed me to my limit. Not only did I lose my mum 12 months after her diagnosis, but in the same year, I split with my partner, losing my home, and shortly afterwards, I lost my sister Christine too. They say divorce, moving house and bereavement are the top three stressors you can go through, but the challenges didn’t end there; I have another sister who has learning disabilities. I had always known I would look after Shelly when my parents passed away, but I hadn’t expected it to happen in my mid 30’s or to be doing it alone. Every aspect of my life had been thrown up in the air. My transformation started with life coach - Alisdair Stewart. When I first met Alisdair, he told me he helps people to reach their full potential, then bluntly said “You could do with some coaching”! Although I was miffed at his comment, I knew he was right. Even though I was working as a producer with the BBC - a job I loved and was winning many prestigious awards, the rest of my life was a wreck. I was in debt, overweight, unhappy in my relationship, 38
year after year passing by with me hoping things would get better. It took me four months to pluck up the courage to call Alisdair and book my first life coaching session. I felt embarrassed. I should be able to sort my own life out, everyone else manages, why was I such a failure? Of course, I know now, it takes real courage to admit life isn’t turning out how you had planned and even more courage to do something about it.
That first session led to a 10-year journey of transformation, changing every aspect of my life. Now, I’m healthy, happy and doing my dream job, inspiring others to make positive changes in their lives through my Change Your World Coaching Services, so completely overhauling my working life too. Rabbi Steve Leder states “Every one of us sooner or later walks through hell. The point is not to come out empty handed.” The key to change and surviving the challenges that life throws at us is to have a consistent personal development practice – what you do today, creates all your tomorrows. If you take a moment to look at your life, you’ll instinctively know the areas you need to change, whether its health, work, relationships or all of it! Spend time working out what you want and more importantly, how you want to feel. You can’t create the life you really want to live if you don’t know where you’re going. It’s like trying to book a holiday, if you don’t know your destination
you can’t book the flights and your hotel. Life is the same. If you’re struggling to work out what you want, first, make a list of all the things you don’t want, then list the opposite – pick one thing and do something each day towards making it happen. Change will bring up obstacles, resistance and fear, and loved ones may be your harshest critics which is why it’s important to get a support network around you. Find groups, organisations and coaching - I believe everyone needs a life coach of their own. Of course, it’s possible to do it alone, but a coach gives you accountability, direction and support to keep you on track when you feel like giving up. I’m so lucky I met Alisdair and he introduced me to the benefits of personal development. The true beauty of developing yourself is the ripple effect. When we go to work on ourselves, we start to think better, when we think better, we make better choices, when we make better choices, we get better results and that’s when our world starts to change. Changing yourself, really does change everything. I’m not saying change is easy, but I’m living proof it’s worth it.

Mikeysline offers a confidential, non-judgemental peer support text- based service, operating 7 evenings a week. If you are struggling with your mental wellbeing currently, please do contact us for some support. We were established out of tragedy to offer hope and support when people need someone to talk to and listen.

Mikeysline is a Highland based suicide prevention charity established in late 2015 following the suicide of two young male friends
within a week of each other, adding to the growing numbers of young people taking their lives in Highland. Feedback from the peers of the two young men at the time said that they felt that there was nowhere for them to go to talk about their feelings or to get support when they needed it. A text line was established based on feedback and research that showed that people were over 40% more likely to hang up a phone than complete a text and send it. Mikeysline text line was the first text-line based service in Scotland. Our text line continues to this day and has seen a significant increase in contacts during the lockdown period. We expect this to continue as we all try to adapt to the new ‘normal’ and we are there for you, should you need us. In late 2017, we developed our services further by opening the Highland’s first out of hours crisis service, again operating 7 evenings a week. The Hive offers a drop-in for anyone feeling socially isolated and experiencing a mental health crisis. This service remains temporarily closed due to the nature of the 1:1 work, but instead we have been and continue at this time to operate a Facebook Messenger callback service – Mikeysline – You are not Alone. The contact details for both our text line and our Messenger/call back service can be found below. Mikeysline is principally a suicide prevention charity, however, we support anyone at any level of emotional concern or distress. hild poverty in Moray is something that cannot be brushed under the carpet. There are families out there who are struggling and the coronavirus has added an extra dimension to the problem. In order to help combat the situation, R-evolution has been set up. This is a new organisation whose aim is to end child poverty. It is a charitable community benefit society delivering training and development to organisations predominantly in the manufacturing, retail and tourism sectors They deliver training such as Food Safety to level 4, manual handling, customer service, management and supervision and mental health. They specialise in coaching and counselling and offer workplace solutions to employers. The most important aspect of this organisation is that 100% of their profit goes into supporting families in Moray. The support comes through Moray School Bank and their coaching and counselling services, supporting people to extricate themselves from the cycle of poverty. As a Community Benefit Society, they are owned and led by the Community and they offer Community Shares to both individuals, groups and businesses. The investment generated will be used to deliver the business and any investment can be withdrawn after 5 years, earning 3% interest.

I
f you are looking for an inspirational, dedicated and self-motivated person who not only dreams big but gets things moving, then look no further than Libby Bligh. In a relatively short space of time Libby has taken a concept and made it into a fully-fledged community project for the benefit of all. She recognised the need for people from all walks of life to express their creativity, thus enriching and enhancing their lives. Lockdown has affected us all; schoolchildren have been denied access to learning and their friends, parents have been furloughed, jobs have been lost and the economy has all but been crippled. People have felt isolated and nowhere is this isolation felt more than in the Highlands and Islands. Consequently, from the initial workshops allowing people to unlock their creative potential, Libby has moved into the digital world, helping to connect those who are isolated because of their postcodes.

Libby’s project offers digital life skills and support services to reduce inequalities and to give everyone the opportunity to connect with the wider world. The project can provide workshops, training or information services, group work and one to one support
throughout the Highlands and Islands. Being ideally placed Libertie Project signed up to the connecting Scotland programme, the Scottish Government initiative to ensure those digitally excluded and on low incomes were provided for during Covid. The Libertie Project has now become the largest provider of digital support in the Highlands, supporting well over 200 households so far and this number is set to double by Christmas. Through another arm of the project badges have been produced for those exempt from wearing a mask or face coverings. As one of the main Disability Confident Leaders in the Highlands Libertie Project are keen to promote the Scottish Government scheme.
