Hello friends,

Yes, that's me and my horse (for the day), Fitzgerald after a sensational trail ride with Jake's Horses near Big Sky, Montana. I was celebrating the culmination of a special trip out west to help at a Reeling in Serenity event, one of the awesome nonprofits I support. That smile is just a trace of the joy I experienced watching our fly fishing retreat participants slowly downshift and get into the rhythm and peace the sport provides. The par ticipants were all at different stages of their recovery from Substance Use Disorder and were paired with fly fishing guides for a day of true retreat.

For us all.

Because, that's what volunteering does. It provides a retreat, a departure from focusing on yourself and your busy life. See the world through the eyes of someone else and then share your gifts and resources to ease their pain.

In this, our annual GIVERS issue, we meet volunteers who make philanthropy a priority. We salute all of you who carve out time to step outside yourself and give back.

Enjoy this issue and have a very happy Thanksgiving. All my best,

SUE

“Pebble Tossers is an organization like no other.”
Brandy Brock

BRANDY BROCK

Volunteering has always been a passion for Brandy Brock. “I started off many moons ago as an elementary school teacher in an underserved area,” says Brandy. “I’ve always been exposed to people and children without. That experience fueled my desire to help whoever I can, when I can, how I can.”

“Volunteerism and giving back is something my husband and I feel obligated to do, given our blessings,” says Brandy, “So, when we had kids, it was important that we included them in our activities. I found myself creating volunteer opportunities and activities that would allow our kids to be involved.”

Brandy shares her time and resources with Martha’s Table, Save the Children, and

Foster Care Center, with other opportunities found by perusing Pebble Tossers website. “Pebble Tossers is an organization like no other, they organized child-appropriate opportunities, handled all the logistics and created thoughtful environments for the kids,” says Brandy. “We love it!”

One example of taking service to the next level, was when she and her husband served with the Point in Time Count. This overnight event, where volunteers walk the streets of downtown Atlanta seeking those who are unhoused helps to provide a snapshot of homelessness in a community. The count is used nationwide to provide a sense of the overall scope of homelessness in America and to allocate resources providing services to those experiencing homelessness.

“It’s an honor and privilege to share the gifts we've received.”
Tiffany and Brad Strawbridge

TIFFANY AND BRAD STRAWBRIDGE

Tiffany and Brad Strawbridge are originally from Florida and moved to the area for work and fell in love with the vibrant community. After starting our own business, the couple decided to stay and opened their doors, right in the heart of this wonderful community.

They believe everyone deserves a safe and secure roof over their heads. Having a safe place to sleep should bring peace of mind, not fear. So, they are giving away a roof to a family in need (see Business Monthly). Supporting this cause aligns with their values, and they also contribute to other nonprofits that focus on community well-being and safety, as we’re

passionate about making a positive impact in people’s lives.

“Volunteering has profoundly changed our life by showing us that in giving back to our community, we often feel the blessings just as much, if not more, than those we help. It’s an honor and privilege to share the gifts we’ve received with others. We truly believe you receive true joy and fulfillment when you give your time, talent, and skills to those in need, and everyone should experience the fulfillment that comes from serving others.”

Tiffany and Brad are excited to be spending Thanksgiving with family and friends in Florida. “As a family, we also plan to give back by serving in a local nonprofit’s kitchen,” says Tiffany,” which makes the holiday even more meaningful for us!”

GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD PROJECT GIVES STUDENTS A LOVING WELCOME.

FEELING LOVED

Emma Williams stands with former WBMS Principal Rebecca Williams (no relation)

The Love Wall, created for Webb Bridge Middle School sixth graders to feel more connected and supported in their new school, is the Girl Scout Gold Award project of Alpharetta High School student Emma Williams.

“SEEING

The schools that she chose to participate in the Love Wall were Webb Bridge Middle School in Alpharetta and Berriew Primary School in Wales, UK. Emma’s vision was for them to walk past their art creation

THEIR SMILES AND EXPERIENCING THEIR ENTHUSIASM FOR ART WAS A WONDERFUL FEELING.”

“I wanted to have a Girl Scout Gold Award project that helped new students feel more connected as they navigated a new school. I had spoken with many students and realized that transitioning to a new school is exciting, and at the same time, can also be a bit scary for some students,” says Emma. “I also knew that I wanted to tie this project back to my Welsh heritage, making my project an International Gold Award.”

and think “I did that, I was a part of creating that artwork!” Emma hopes the overlapping hearts will be a symbol of connectedness and serve as a visual representation that everyone is in this together and that no one is alone. “It was very rewarding to work with the students on both sides of the Atlantic. Seeing their smiles and experiencing their enthusiasm for art was a wonderful feeling.”

“TO ME, BEING A GIRL SCOUT IS ALL ABOUT EMBODYING THE VALUES OF LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges each recipient’s power and dedication to not only bettering herself, but to making the world a better place for others.

“To me, being a Girl Scout is all about embodying the values of leadership and community service. The Love Wall helped me tap into my creative side. I have led art badges for younger Girl Scouts and I absolutely loved seeing the excitement on their faces when their drawings were coming together,” says Emma.

EMSCULPT

A Bright Future in Biomedical Engineering

ARTICLE BY VALERIE SHEPHERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADYA SRINIVASAN
ADYA SRINIVASAN'S JOURNEY FROM CLASSROOM TO CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH
Adya credits her passion for bioinformatics research, particularly in single-cell genomes, to a personal family experience—a relative diagnosed with congenital heart disease who underwent xenotransplantation.

Whether in the classroom, or in the lab, or in the many organizations she is a part of, Johns Creek Innovation Academy High School Senior Adya Srinivasan is already contributing life-changing and impactful research and contributions to both the community, and the world.

Adya’s path is not that of a typical high school student. Sure, her days are filled with classes, friends, clubs and organizations, and she’s also achieved academic excellence and holds leadership roles. But several of her days are also filled with producing award-winning films as well as biomedical engineering internships that started her sophomore year at Emory Winship Cancer Institute and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA).

Adya credits her passion for bioinformatics research, particularly in single-cell genomes, to a personal family experience—a relative diagnosed with congenital heart disease who underwent xenotransplantation. This sparked not only Adya’s interest in medical science, but inspired her to want to make a real difference, a lifetime difference, to not only that particular family member but anyone affected with that condition and disease. As her skills have developed, so has her fascination with computer science, especially in how it intersects with healthcare research.

Addressing pressing social issues for her peers and within the community and state are also a priority for Adya, in the hopes of increasing awareness and conversations on stigmatized topics as well as fundraise for them. Issues like opioid addiction, where Adya firmly believes that “the more you know, the more you can do,” dedicating much of her time to impactful campaigns. And local organizations are taking notes - she won accolades at the Georgia HOSA Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference and was awarded the Seed

of Change award by the Raksha Board of Directors last year for her contributions for her short film titled “Pain Point” she wrote and directed, which become very popular over social media channels.

Channeling her efforts into areas where she can bring about the most significant change, whether in a research lab or through community initiatives, Adya Srinivasan exemplifies what it means to be a young leader with a vision for a brighter future fueled by her passions and focused work to give back and contribute forward.

Johns Creek can take great pride in not only Adya’s current achievements, but look forward to her continued success in the transformative work, communities and organizations she dedicates her time and talents to as she pursues her passions centered around giving for years to come.

If you are longing for warm weather, pristine beaches, museums, music, great shopping and fine dining, Sarasota is for you. And the newly renovated voco Sarasota, an IHG property, is the perfect location in the heart of the Rosemary District, just steps from downtown. Voco (means ‘to invite’ and ‘call together’) hotels are popping up everywhere. There are 71 properties across the globe and 10 in the US.

Built on sustainability, because mother earth is just as important as voco guests, each room offers plush bedding made from 100 percent recycled materials.

Check-in was fast and friendly with a short tour of the outdoor hotel pool and fitness center. Our room had a king bed with a separate sitting area, a smart TV, and a huge walk-in shower. Once we unpacked, we grabbed a quick drink at Offshore Tapas and Wine Bar before heading out for some sightseeing. It’s a short walk to the downtown area or the beach. Day one, we decided to check out Main Street. There are so many restaurants to choose from. And if you’re looking for foods to take home, you should check out the downtown farmers market.

We used the free shuttle service for dinner. Our driver Jim was so friendly and informative. He also had some great suggestions for after dinner.

Day two, after a delicious breakfast at the hotel, it was off to Lido Key Beach. The area is nice and wide giving you plenty of space to enjoy the sun and sand.

Sarasota’s public parks and town centers offer endless activity programming and community events that locals and visitors alike can get in on all throughout the week – and year.
