From the Editor with Gratitude . . .
Dear Readers,
As autumn arrives and the leaves change color, we enter another season of gratitude. Thanksgiving offers us a chance to reflect on the experiences, relationships, and moments that contribute to our lives.
In our fast-paced world, where success is often measured by achievements and milestones, it's easy to overlook the simple joys that surround us daily. This year, I invite you to join me in shifting our focus. Let's celebrate not just the destinations we reach, but the journey itself and those who walk alongside us.
I'm grateful for my sons, Charlie and Henry, and the joy they bring to our home. I appreciate the love and support of family and friends, and I'm thankful to be part of the Smyrna Vinings community. Our local educators, friendly neighbors, and the often-overlooked everyday blessings all contribute to making this a great place to live.
In this November issue, we shine a spotlight on the heart of our community. We share stories of local heroes – from veterans who've served our country to volunteers making a difference right here at home. We explore how local organizations are empowering families facing challenges and how our schools are nurturing the next generation of leaders. We also celebrate the spirit of camaraderie that binds our community together, whether at work or play.
None of this would be possible without you – our readers – and the local businesses that support our vision. Their partnership allows us to bring these inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, painting a picture of the goodness that surrounds us.
As we prepare to gather around tables laden with turkey and trimmings, let's take a moment to savor more than just the food. Let's feast on the connections we share, the memories we create, and the love that fills our hearts. In doing so, we honor the true essence of Thanksgiving.
May this season bring you moments of joy, reflection, and deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
With heartfelt gratitude,

HONORING OUR HEROES
The American Legion Auxiliary’s Commitment to Veterans
As Veterans Day approaches, our community comes together to express gratitude for the brave men and women who have served our nation. The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) stands at the forefront of this effort, embodying their motto of “Service, Not Self” through various initiatives that support veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families.
One of the most visible symbols of this commitment is the red poppy, distributed by ALA members nationwide on Veterans Day. This tradition, rooted in the aftermath of World War I, has become an international symbol of remembrance and honor for all veterans. Locally, members of Smyrna Unit 160 will be distributing poppies and raising awareness for their vital programs.

American Legion AuxiliarySmyrna Unit 160 Members distribute poppies in support of veterans.
“The American Legion Auxiliary embodies ‘Service, Not Self,’ supporting veterans and active-duty personnel. This Veterans Day, their efforts highlight the ongoing need to address mental health stigma and suicide rates among service members.”
Cheryl Waybright, a member of Smyrna Unit 160 and current President for the ALA Department of Georgia, emphasizes the importance of community involvement. “The American Legion posts throughout our state and country are critical to small and large town communities,” Cheryl notes. ALA members support their local posts by contributing to a wide array of programs, from serving as polling places to hosting blood drives and sponsoring youth civic programs.
However, the ALA’s mission extends far beyond these community services. Cheryl highlights a pressing issue facing veterans and active-duty personnel today: the stigma surrounding mental health and the alarming rate of suicide among service members. The American Legion’s “Be The One” program aims to address this crisis head-on, urging everyone to “Be The One to Save One” through advocacy and training.
This initiative holds personal significance for Cheryl, whose son, an Army Sergeant, has experienced the devastating impact of losing teammates to suicide. “This is more prevalent than any of us could imagine,” she shares, underscoring the importance of supporting organizations like Irreverent Warriors and the Tunnels to Towers Veterans home project in Mableton.
As we express our thankfulness this Veterans Day, let us remember that our gratitude can take many forms. Whether it’s wearing a poppy, participating in local events, or supporting mental health initiatives for veterans, each of us has the power to make a difference. The ALA Department of Georgia’s tagline this year, “Amp Up Mission” in support of veterans reminds us all of our ongoing responsibility to those who have served and are currently serving our country so selflessly.

ST. BENEDICT’S
EPISCOPAL
SCHOOL LOOKS AHEAD
CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE:
Fifteen years ago, St. Benedict’s Episcopal School opened its doors in Smyrna, Georgia, with a clear mission: to inspire learning, nurture growth, and instill the values of Episcopal education in its students. Founded in 2009, the school started with just 60 students, offering an independent education from preschool through eighth grade. Fast forward to today, St. Benedict’s has grown to serve around 640 students, a testament to its success and the strong community it has built.

From the beginning, St. Benedict’s faced the challenges typical of a new school: establishing credibility and attracting students. However, the school’s strong mission and vision, paired with the unwavering support of the community, helped it flourish. Today, St. Benedict’s is recognized for its exceptional outplacement program, with graduates being highly sought after by top magnet and independent high schools. This achievement speaks volumes about the quality of education and care students receive.
Parents, too, speak highly of the school’s environment. Christine Fierro, whose boys have attended St. Benedict’s, shares, “St. B’s challenged my boys academically in an environment where they felt respected, safe, and seen. This combination taught them two valuable life skills: the ability to think critically, and with kindness.” It’s this blend of academic rigor and emotional support that has defined the St. Benedict’s experience for so many families.
“ST.
BENEDICT’S COMMITMENT TO NURTURING AND INSPIRING STUDENTS REMAINS STRONGER THAN
One of the school’s recent milestones includes earning STEM certification through CIGNA, positioning St. Benedict’s as a leader in both academic excellence and innovation. As the school celebrates 15 years of growth and success, it is clear that St. Benedict’s commitment to providing a well-rounded, values-driven education remains strong.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating 15 Years of Excellence: Imagine What’s Next,” invites the St. Benedict’s community to dream big as the school looks to the future.
EVER.”
The Annual Fund aims to raise $850,000 to support this vision, with funds going toward final payments on new property and vital programs such as technology upgrades, professional development, and enrichment activities. The school’s goal is to have 420 families contribute, with an average donation of $2,025 by 2025. Every gift, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in enriching the student experience and building the future of St. Benedict’s.
The school’s Preschool through 8th-grade model offers students a
nurturing environment during key developmental years, giving them leadership opportunities, fostering self-awareness, and helping them build a strong sense of belonging. Sandra, a parent since 2014, reflects on her family’s experience: “We initially chose St. Benedict’s because we wanted a school where our children would feel like they were part of a tight-knit community. While the school has grown since then, we have continued to feel that special space where the teachers know who your kids are and your classmates have turned into deep friendships. We are so excited to see all the opportunities ahead at St. B’s!” Looking ahead, St. Benedict’s plans to continue building on its 15 years of excellence. The school has acquired a 4.2-acre parcel of land that will allow for exciting outdoor, hands-on learning experiences for both students and summer camp attendees. As the school reflects on the past 15 years and envisions the future, its commitment to nurturing and inspiring students remains stronger than ever.
To learn more about St. Benedict’s Episcopal School, including how to apply for enrollment, upcoming events, and opportunities to support their mission, visit their website at stbs.org. Discover the vibrant programs and welcoming community that make St. Benedict’s a special place for students to grow academically and personally. A community of women dedicated to service, friendship, and uplifting those in need.
It Takes A
Vinings Village
In 1978, a group of eight Vinings women met to organize the Vinings Village Woman’s Club. And so began a tradition of community service and neighborhood friendships. Mary Ann Sikes, one of the original founders, shared that hard work mixed with fun has kept the group thriving 46 years later!
With members having a heart for community service, the VVWC Board meets every summer to plan projects for the year. First Responder Appreciation is always on the list. Club volunteers form small groups to deliver meals, snacks, and gift cards to the police precinct and two fire departments that serve Vinings. With gift boxes in hand, club volunteers visit each station once a quarter to thank first responders for their service to the community. Last spring, a team of firefighters made a surprise visit to a club meeting to thank members for their donation to the family of a sick fireman.
The club enjoys a ten-year partnership with the local elementary school. Members love loading up supplies and visiting classrooms to help students make cards for troops deployed over the holidays. Volunteers say, “To see a student write, ‘We know your own kids are proud of you, because WE sure are!’ is always heartwarming.” Judging the annual school Science Fair is a favorite club project. Members are always impressed with the intelligence and enthusiasm of local young scientists and the hard work of their science teachers. During the pandemic, VVWC purchased iPads to help students work from home. Those devices are still in use today.
Annually, the club plans a project for a local shelter that provides safety to abused mothers and their children. Last year, members designed and furnished a Calming Room for new arrivals, day or night, complete with comfortable furniture, warm blankets, and a refrigerator stocked with juice boxes. This year, Birthday Party Bags assembled by the members will provide instant parties for sheltered children. Each bag will contain party favors, paper goods, and a gift card for a birthday cake.
Was hard work mentioned? Hats off to Beautification Chairmen over the years who commissioned and installed the three original VININGS VILLAGE signs at the entrances to the village. They also cleared and landscaped the Paces Ferry right-ofway at the entrance from the river, which the club maintains to this day.
The club bestows the “Vinings Treasure Award” to a Vinings resident who exemplifies community service. In 2022, the club celebrated Joseph Meeks, founding director of the Kennesaw State University College of the Arts. George McKerrow, philanthropist and owner of Canoe Restaurant was the 2023 recipient. This year, Alana Shepherd, Co-Founder with her family of the world-renowned Shepherd Spinal Center, was honored, and members were given an in-person narrated virtual tour of the center.
A favorite annual project is making lap blankets specifically designed for patients in wheelchairs. This hands-on project brings friends together to cut, tie, and, of
course, chat. For the second consecutive year, the blankets will go to the Shepherd Spinal Center as Valentine’s Day presents.
While members enjoy the fellowship of in-person, hands-on projects, there are times when a monetary contribution better serves the organization’s needs. Over the years, VVWC has made donations to the Vinings Public Library and the Vinings Historic Preservation Society. The club also helped Vinings United Methodist Church purchase additional seating for meeting rooms, which it shares with the public.
Forty-six years is a long time to keep a ladies’ neighborhood club running! This group is very proud of its long tradition and plans to keep it going. This hard-working, fun-loving group of ladies of all ages looks forward to each meeting and each upcoming project. Nothing is better than seeing old friends while making new ones along the way!

TOGETHER WE CARE:
EMPOWERING EVERY ABILITY

EMPOWERING FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES TO THRIVE THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT, ADVOCACY, AND COMPASSIONATE CARE.
Jillian and Anthony Palmiotto’s journey with Together We Care (TWC) began with a deep-rooted belief that every person, regardless of their abilities, has a purpose. Inspired by their faith and driven by their personal relationships with individuals with disabilities, the Palmiottos envisioned a future where barriers would not define anyone’s potential. They understood that people with disabilities often face isolation and marginalization in a world that doesn’t always accommodate them. Through TWC, they have become catalysts for change—restoring hope, advocating for resources, and building communities that embrace everyone.
The heart of TWC’s mission is to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to live the life they’ve always dreamed of. Jillian shares the story of a single widowed mother with two teenage daughters with severe
Autism, one of whom is non-verbal and experiences frequent violent meltdowns. As a full-time teacher, the mother was struggling not only with caregiving but also with keeping her daughters in school for a full day and affording the care they needed at home.
TWC stepped in with immediate advocacy—helping the mother access Medicaid programs to cover caregiving services, providing school support to manage her daughter’s behavior, and organizing respite care for the mother. “We built a schedule of support around the family,” says Jillian. With TWC’s assistance, the mother was finally able to experience a glimmer of hope, knowing she had a team behind her.
But challenges continued when the family faced a major plumbing issue caused by tree roots. The mother, overwhelmed by home maintenance in the absence of her late
“BY
husband, turned to TWC for help. Jillian and Anthony mobilized their network, calling on Kenneth Black Plumbing for an emergency repair. In an extraordinary act of generosity, Thomas Mercer of Restoration Tree Care donated his services, removing the problematic trees at no cost. A local ministry then covered both the plumbing and water bills, relieving the family of any financial burden. This collaboration beautifully exemplifies how Together We Care uses its community connections to create life-changing support.
TWC’s work centers around three pillars: equipping families with the right resources, providing for their practical needs, and empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals. One of the biggest challenges, Jillian explains, is the equipping process—specifically, undoing the misinformation families often encounter online. To address this, TWC takes a personalized approach, meeting with families to craft individualized plans and providing group education events to help families understand how to access and maximize the resources available to them. Additionally, they are developing a YouTube channel with short, informative videos to guide families through their “roadmap,” making the process more accessible.
Looking to the future, Jillian and Anthony envision a world where the 2 million people in Georgia with disabilities enjoy the same opportunities as their neurotypical peers. They hope to break down barriers in employment, education, healthcare, and community involvement. TWC plays a key role in this vision by offering advocacy, life coaching, and tailored support to ensure every person has access to the services they need to thrive.
For those inspired by TWC’s mission, there are many ways to get involved beyond financial donations. The organization is always in need of volunteers willing to become family coordinators—individuals who act as lifelines for families navigating the complexities of disability. These volunteers stay in touch with their assigned families, helping them move forward on their roadmap of resources. It’s a rewarding role that requires as little as a few hours a month and can be done remotely.
Jillian and Anthony also encourage spreading the word about TWC. “Sharing our impact stories on social media helps us reach more families,” Jillian explains. By raising awareness and building a larger community of support, TWC can extend its reach and offer hope to even more individuals and families navigating the challenges of disability. Whether through volunteering, raising awareness, or offering encouragement, every effort contributes to a world where barriers are broken and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The work of Together We Care is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and unwavering support.

“Shopping locally does more than just support individual businesses; it strengthens our entire community. It’s a simple act that has far-reaching benefits for everyone who calls Smyrna home.”
In the wake of COVID-19’s impact on small businesses, Smyrna’s spirit of community has never shone brighter. The Smyrna Business Association (SBA) has reinvented its approach to supporting local enterprises. The annual “Shop Smyrna Saturday” event, evolved from the “Shop Small, Shop Local” initiative, has become a cherished community tradition.
On the Saturday following Thanksgiving, our community unites to celebrate and support the businesses that make Smyrna unique. Spearheaded by Paul Powers and Sara Sorenson, the mission of this initiative is to remind residents about the diverse array of local shops and eateries right in our neighborhood.
Shopping locally does more than just support individual businesses; it strengthens our entire community. When we choose to spend at Smyrna establishments, we’re helping to maintain the character and vitality of our city. It’s a simple act that has far-reaching benefits for everyone who calls Smyrna home.
The SBA team’s efforts to promote the event are noteworthy. Through social media campaigns and friendly outreach by SBA Ambassadors, they’re spreading the
word about the importance of supporting local businesses. As an added incentive, shoppers on November 30th between 9am and 5pm have a chance to win one of three $100 gift cards.
Vickery Ace Hardware off Concord Road stands out as an enthusiastic participant. Their wholehearted embrace of the event, from displaying promotional materials to using Shop Smyrna swag bags, exemplifies the community spirit that makes our city special.
What began as a small initiative with just 10 businesses has grown significantly, with over 25 local establishments participating this year. This growth reflects Smyrna’s increasing sense of unity and shared purpose.
As “Shop Smyrna Saturday” continues to evolve, it serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of community support. By choosing to shop locally, we’re not just making purchases; we’re investing in the place we call home. It’s a simple yet powerful way to ensure Smyrna remains vibrant and welcoming for years to come.
