Special Appreciation

Dear Mercer Island Community,

As we reflect on the past year, our hearts are filled with immense gratitude for this vibrant and generous community. It has been a true privilege to witness firsthand the extraordinary ways in which Mercer Islanders give back—quietly and boldly, through action and advocacy. In this Giving Back issue, we celebrate the countless organizations and individuals who tirelessly dedicate themselves to uplifting our neighbors, friends, and even strangers. It is through your efforts that the spirit of philanthropy thrives here on the island.

At Mercer Island City Lifestyle, we are honored to share the stories of those making a difference. From pillars like Mercer Island Youth and Family Services, the Mercer Island Community Fund, and the Mercer Island Schools Foundation to emerging causes and organizations, like No More Under and Pitch Your Peers, this issue reflects the strength and compassion embedded in the fabric of our community.

More than simply highlighting these incredible organizations, we want to take this moment to express our deepest thanks to “you” —our readers, partners, and the inspiring individuals whose stories we’ve had the privilege of telling. Your enthusiasm, support, and engagement over the past year have not only shaped this publication but also fueled our collective mission to be stewards of the values we hold dear.

We would also like to acknowledge the critical alliances we’ve formed with the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department and the Mercer Island Community and Events Center. These partnerships have allowed us to further our reach and mission to be this community’s lifestyle and cultural asset. Together, we have accomplished so much, and we are filled with excitement for the future as we continue to tell the stories that reflect the heart and soul of Mercer Island.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes and for your unwavering dedication to making this community a better place for all.

With sincere appreciation and warmest regards,

November 2024

JOSIE VERMEULEN: A LIFE OF KINDNESS AND GIVING BACK

Imagine standing on the docks, watching as the last ship of the year prepared to set sail for America. Josie Vermeulen, 25, clutched her toddler as she and her husband faced the devastating reality that they’d have to wait three years before they could immigrate. Josie was also pregnant, adding urgency to their situation.

Then, by chance, the captain’s wife overheard their predicament. Moved by their plight, she made a bold decision – to give up her own cabin so Josie, her husband, and their child could make the voyage across the Atlantic.

“It was so hard, but we made it,” Josie recalled, her eyes shining with gratitude for the kindness of the stranger who changed their lives. Without the captain’s wife, the Vermeulens’ dream of a new life in America may have been delayed. “She was so kind,” Josie said. “She even helped care for me when I was so sick during the journey.”

Now, nearly 75 years later, living at Aegis Mercer Island, Josie’s remarkable story continues to inspire.  At 98 years old, turning 99 next month, her zest for life and commitment to helping others is awe-inspiring.

Josie "in action"

“Josie embodies what we strive for – a life filled with purpose and service to others,” shared Chris Corrigall, Senior VP of Wellbeing at Aegis.

Chris leads Wellbeing, an effort to cultivate the unique purpose of each Aegis resident. Josie’s days are filled with activity, from daily knitting sessions to enjoying social events like opera nights. “I love the opera, even if I’ve seen it three or five times before,” she laughed.

Josie learned to knit and crochet as a young girl in Holland. When she first arrived at Aegis, she was hesitant about living in a smaller space. “But now, this is my little workshop, and I’m never bored!” she said.

After their harrowing journey, Josie’s husband worked as an engineer, despite challenges due to his non-citizen status. Undeterred, the couple eventually started their successful business, United Power and Control. “My husband always told me, ‘Josie, never give up.’”

After 45 years in Seattle, they retired to Arizona, where Josie kept busy tending her yard. Three years ago, she moved to Aegis, where she continues to thrive.

Most inspiring is Josie’s commitment to helping others. “I don’t need the money,” she said. “I just want to help people.” With Aegis’s support, she’s crafted nearly 100 hats to donate to the Union Gospel Mission, a gesture of giving back in honor of the kindness she received years ago.

“As Josie’s 99th birthday approaches, we are honored to celebrate this remarkable woman,” shared Kaitlyn from the Wellbeing team. “Her resilience, generosity, and zest for life inspire us all.”

In a month focused on giving back, Josie Vermeulen reminds us that acts of kindness, no matter how small, can change lives. Her story shows that giving back comes full circle, enriching not just the recipient, but the giver too.

"I just want to help people." "Back then in Holland, little girls were given the choice to learn to crochet or cook. That's when I started to crochet."

Feast for the Senses

As the leaves turn golden and crisp, and the cool air hints at the coming holiday season, the art of creating fall floral centerpieces can add joy and beauty to an abundant season. At House of Posie, founder and floral artist Jessika Mazure, shares, “We believe in elevating the ambiance of any gathering with the perfect mix of flowers, candles, and personal touches”.

Jessika was generous with her time and experienced advice when I interviewed her about the top trends, floral choices, and tips for creating memorable fall centerpieces that reflect the season’s beauty.

THANKFUL FOR NATURE’S FALL

ABUNDANCE: DESIGNING FALL

CENTERPIECES FROM HOUSE OF POSIE

An abundant fall centerpiece
“FROM AN AESTHETIC STANDPOINT, FALL IS A BOUNTY,

CELEBRATION, GATHERING, THANKFULNESS - DISPLAYED VISUALLY FOR US” - JESSIKA MAZURE, HOUSE OF POSIE

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM JESSIKA:

Fall is a feast for the senses, offering a vibrant spectrum of colors and textures. This season, we’re seeing a shift from the subdued tones of previous years toward rich, bold hues. Jewel tones such as mustard, emerald green, and sapphire dominate the landscape, setting the stage for gatherings that celebrate thankfulness and togetherness. Autumn is about embracing the bounty of nature—capturing the vibrancy and abundance of the season visually. From an aesthetic standpoint, it’s a time to experiment and let your creativity flourish.

When designing a Thanksgiving centerpiece, draw inspiration from the colors and textures of the season. It’s not just about the flowers, but also the feeling of warmth and gratitude. Think of your table as a visual representation of the season’s abundance, with layers of foliage, berries, and seasonal elements that evoke the coziness of fall.

For this season, popular palettes include mustards, rich burgundies, deep oranges, and splashes of sapphire. These colors capture the essence of fall, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for your guests. Whether you’re using mums, dahlias, or foliage, the idea is to play with depth and variety. A monochromatic arrangement in one bold color can be equally striking, providing a modern yet timeless look.

This fall, it’s not just about the flowers. Incorporating non-floral elements like gourds, pine cones, and berries adds texture and dimension to your arrangements. One of my favorite touches is the use of pheasant feathers for a rustic, elegant look. The holidays are a time to go big, so don’t be afraid to layer on the joy with these extra touches. It’s less about minimalism and more about celebrating life’s abundance.

FLORAL ARTIST, HOUSE OF POSIE

After many years of making floral arrangements for friends, I decided to turn my hobby into a business. In 2015, House of Posie was born! I am passionate about flowers and creating something special for any occasion. From little posies to wedding flowers, I love meeting with clients and bringing their vision to life. When I am not designing flowers, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three sons, spoiling my dog Gongju, playing golf, and hanging out with my Mercer Island friends!

At House of Posie, we believe everyone should have access to beautiful arrangements without breaking the bank. For those who want to DIY, I recommend mixing different flowers in the same color palette or using thrifted items like vases or decorative ornaments. It’s all about playing with what you have and trusting your own creativity. We offer custom designs for Thanksgiving, and our Instagram gallery is a great place to see past work for inspiration.

As the temperature cools, certain flowers come into their own. Mums, for instance, are incredibly hardy and come in a range of colors, sizes, and varietals, making them a versatile choice for any centerpiece. These blooms pair beautifully with berries and foliage for an arrangement that is both full and textured. Grocery stores are a great place to pick up these seasonal flowers—don’t overlook what’s readily available to you!

One of the keys to a successful fall centerpiece is balance. If you’re going bold with deep oranges or jewel tones, don’t overthink it. Ferns, for example, can add a beautiful flair, giving your arrangement a sense of movement and dimension. Play with layers by tucking flowers in and pulling some out, creating a sense of depth. The best designer for your table is you—trust your instincts and create what is most visually pleasing to your eye.

Creating a centerpiece at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start by foraging in your yard—often, the best additions are right outside your door. For example, ferns can provide structure, while small pumpkins from the grocery store add a whimsical touch. As for flowers, stick to one color tone for a cohesive look. Remember, variety is key, but simplicity often speaks volumes.

When designing for Thanksgiving, consider the layout of your table. For family-style meals, keep centerpieces low to avoid obstructing conversation. A beautiful arrangement of three—one larger centerpiece flanked by two smaller ones—creates balance and allows for interaction across the table. Candles are the final touch, adding warmth and creating an intimate, celebratory atmosphere. The act of lighting a candle symbolizes the specialness of the moment and enhances the mood for your meal.

THE JOY OF CREATING

There’s a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful with your own hands. Whether you’re designing a centerpiece for a large gathering or an intimate dinner, the process of arranging flowers and non-floral elements taps into creativity and gratitude. At House of Posie, we are passionate about sharing these tips with our community through floral arranging classes and events—because creating beauty should be a celebration in itself.

House of Posie is built on a love for community, gathering, and creating memorable experiences. Whether you’re designing a fall centerpiece for a special occasion or a simple family dinner, remember: you have the best taste for your own table. Trust yourself, embrace the season, and enjoy the process of creation.

Mercer Island City Lifestyle’s Publisher Reflects on a Year of Thankful Gratitude and Community Building

A Tribute to Mercer Island Giving

ARTICLE BY CHRIS ISHII
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MERCER ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE

Mercer Island has always been a community that exemplifies the power of giving back. This core value, deeply woven into our island’s culture, is reflected in the incredible charitable organizations and initiatives that serve and uplift us.

At the heart of our charitable network is Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS). This organization is a lifeline for individuals and families, providing crucial mental health counseling, emergency assistance, and school counseling programs that build resilience and foster well-being. MIYFS ensures that no one in our community faces challenges alone. We are especially proud of our efforts in driving attendance to the MIYFS Annual Fundraising Breakfast this year, helping make a meaningful difference in their work.

Equally essential is the Mercer Island Schools Foundation (MISF), which drives educational excellence by funding programs that enrich the learning experience for every student in our school district. MISF bridges the gap between public funding and the true cost of world-class education, empowering the next generation of leaders to thrive. This foundation represents our community’s unwavering commitment to providing the best possible education for our children.

Another pillar of our community’s support is the Mercer Island Community Fund (MICF). We are proud to have co-sponsored the Summer Celebration and Mostly Music in the Park with MICF in partnership with the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department.

These three organizations—MIYFS, MISF, and MICF—are the pillars that safeguard our island’s well-being, education, and future. They represent the very best of what we stand for as a community.

We are also proud to have featured many other causes that Islanders are passionate

about. No More Under, an organization dedicated to water safety and drowning prevention, recently held its first annual fundraiser, Ripples of Hope. Founder Chezik Tsunoda summarized, “Ripples of Hope was our first fundraiser, and it truly exceeded our expectations! The evening was filled with inspiring stories from our community and a collective hope for a safer future around water”.

From Youth Theater Northwest (YTN), which nurtures creativity in our youth, to Pitch Your Peers Seattle, empowering women to make a direct, meaningful impact in our community, Mercer Island is full of incredible initiatives. Organizations like Friends of Children Seattle, providing mentorship to youth, and Island Youth Ballet, focusing on artistic excellence, further demonstrate our island’s commitment

to supporting and nurturing future generations. We are also proud to support initiatives like Pies Against Cancer, which brings hope and support to families battling cancer.

It is also worth celebrating how our island’s spirit of giving extends far beyond its borders. Initiatives like Brad Brotherton’s Celebrity Steak Out, benefiting the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Kurt Dammeier’s Beecher’s Foundation with its Pure Food Kids Workshop are perfect examples of how Islanders contribute to causes that have national impact.

One of the stories that particularly resonates with me is Jill Hawkins’ journey. In 2010, Jill moved to Mercer Island seeking a smaller, supportive community for her daughter Charlotte, who had special education needs. Despite extensive testing,

Mercer Islanders consistently embody a spirit of generosity and service that leaves a lasting impact on countless lives in our community and globally.

we do at Mercer Island City Lifestyle, where we’ve been honored to highlight the numerous causes that make our community special. As I reflect on my role as Publisher, I am so grateful for how warmly the community has embraced us. The outpouring of enthusiasm and appreciation we’ve received is a reflection of the charitable causes we’ve covered from the very beginning.

Charlotte remained undiagnosed for nearly 15 years, until she and her younger brother, Cooper, were diagnosed with a mutation on the FAM177a1 gene. Determined to find a cure, Jill founded the FAM177a1 Research Fund. With the support of friends and family, she launched a drug repurposing initiative, testing 1,600 FDA-approved drugs in search of potential treatments. Her efforts are a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together to support one another.

As Sharon Perez, our Editor, so eloquently says, “Mercer Islanders value family, education, arts, culture, and philanthropy.” This spirit is at the heart of everything

But as we celebrate the incredible work these charities have done, we must also recognize that the need has never been greater. Now is the time for each of us to step up and contribute in any way we can. Whether it’s a donation, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word, your support can make an immeasurable difference. This year, let’s commit to making Mercer Island stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate than ever before.

We also know we are only scratching the surface when it comes to the many contributions Islanders are making. We encourage everyone to continue bringing their stories to Sharon so that we can shine a light on the good being done by those in our community. Sharon and I view our publication as an asset to the community—we are simply stewards of this precious resource. We always welcome editorial ideas, especially those aligned with the core values of our Islanders

Mercer Island thrives on its strong sense of community, with residents who care deeply about its well-being. At the heart of this is the Mercer Island Community Fund (MICF), an all-volunteer organization that has quietly worked for four decades to meet the Island’s evolving needs.

Since 1985, the Mercer Island Community Fund, through the generosity of the citizens of Mercer Island, has provided hundreds of grants over the years to enrich the quality of life for the Mercer Island community.  Grants have included:

• Annual sponsorships of Island events, such as Youth Theatre Northwest productions, Mostly Music in the Park, MI Special Olympics and Summer Celebration.

• Start-up funds to island-based public charities such as Friendship Circle, IMS Spanish program, Neighbors in Motion, Booster Clubs and the Farmers Market

• Well-established programs in times of need, Youth & Family Services, NW Parkinson’s Foundation, MIVAL, and the Fire Department CPR program.

• A platform to immediately raise funds, for both non-profit organizations and small businesses, with WeLove MI Covid-19 Relief Campaign.   “MICF strives to respond to the changing needs of the Mercer Island

community,” shares Jackie Brown, Board President. “We want to support programs and services that are both timely and meaningful to Islanders.”  In 2023, MICF awarded $59,600 in grants to help support organizations and programs directly benefiting the Mercer Island community.

“There are so many organizations doing good charitable work, and we’re leaning into filling the gaps by promoting community-oriented events with a focus on arts and culture,” Jackie explains.

“As we look ahead, we’re excited to see how the arts can continue to bring people together, inspire future generations, and keep Mercer Island a place where everyone feels connected and engaged,” Jackie adds.
