HONORING FIRST RESPONDERS: HEROES IN ACTION
City Manager’s Monthly Update
Sponsored by T Wilson
On October 1, our community participated in the nationwide initiative National Night Out. The evening provided an opportunity to build stronger relationships with our police department while promoting neighborhood safety and camaraderie. As always, it was a great way to connect with fellow neighbors and engage with our officers and other city staff. I want to thank everyone who hosted or attended a block party. Events like this help strengthen the bonds that make our community safer and more vibrant.
As Anna continues to grow, so does our Police Department. Over the last few years, we’ve increased our team from 23 employees in 2021 to 40 in 2024, with added officers and civilian support positions. This growth enables us to expand our services and maintain a strong presence in our rapidly developing city.
We’ve continued outreach efforts like Coffee with Cops, where neighbors can have casual conversations with officers, and the Bike Rally, which teaches kids about bike safety. We also had a great time cooling off with Chill Out with Cops over the summer, and we’re gearing up for Cruisin’ with Claus, our annual holiday toy drive that partners with our school district to spread joy to children in our local community.
Additionally, our Bike Patrol Unit has been a valuable addition to the department. These officers conduct proactive patrols in areas that are difficult for vehicles to access and provide enhanced safety during crowded special events. Their mobility allows them to be highly effective in connecting with the community.
The success of these events shows how much we can accomplish together. Thank you for your ongoing participation and support as we work to create a safer, more connected Anna.
A Season of Gratitude
As the leaves begin to turn and the air carries a crispness that hints at the approaching winter, we find ourselves in a season that invites reflection and gratitude. It’s a time to pause and acknowledge the many blessings that enrich our lives.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush, focusing on what lies ahead. But this season reminds us to appreciate the present moment and the people who fill our lives with joy, support, and inspiration. We are grateful for our readers, whose passion for stories fuels our mission. Your enthusiasm motivates us to seek out diverse voices and share narratives that resonate deeply.
We are thankful for the vibrant communities that surround us. The connections we make with our partners and readers remind us that stories are not just words on a page; they are the threads that weave us together. Whether it be the article on First Responders, Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, or Diabetes Awareness, it is a conversation waiting to happen, a bridge between different experiences.
As we gather with loved ones this season, let’s take a moment to express our gratitude—not just for the big milestones, but for the small joys that often go unnoticed. A warm cup of coffee, a shared laugh, a moment of kindness—these are the treasures that fill our lives with meaning.
In this spirit of thankfulness, we invite you to explore our latest offerings. Whether you’re seeking a cozy read or an eye-opening narrative, we hope you find something that speaks to your heart.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Your support is invaluable, and we look forward to sharing more stories with you in the months to come.
Warm regards,

Thankful for Our First Responders
In times of crisis, the bravery and dedication of first responders shine like beacons of hope. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and EMTs form a crucial line of defense, ensuring our safety and well-being. As we reflect on their contributions, we must express gratitude for their unwavering commitment to protecting our communities.
First responders are often the first to arrive at the scene of emergencies. Firefighters battle blazes, risking their lives to save property and lives. They undergo rigorous training to handle hazardous situations, often working long hours under extreme pressure. When a fire engulfs a building, it’s these brave individuals who rush in, equipped with specialized gear and a steadfast resolve to rescue those trapped inside.
Police officers serve as the guardians of our communities, working tirelessly to uphold the law and maintain order. Their roles extend far beyond responding to crimes; they provide support during public events, engage with community members, and offer assistance in various situations. The courage required to face potentially dangerous scenarios daily is immense, and their ability to maintain composure and professionalism is commendable.
Paramedics and EMTs are the lifeline between life and death. In emergencies, they provide critical care, stabilize patients, and transport them to medical facilities. Their expertise in high-pressure environments often makes the difference in life-threatening situations. With compassion and skill, they work to ensure that every patient receives the care they need as quickly as possible.
“We are grateful for police officers, who selflessly protect our communities and ensure our safety every day. Their dedication deserves our heartfelt appreciation and support.”
Imagine a day in the life of these heroes. Early in the morning, the alarm rings, and they gear up for a shift filled with uncertainty. They may start with routine inspections of their equipment, but in an instant, their day can shift from calm to chaotic. Whether responding to a fire, a medical emergency, or a distress call, they must be prepared for anything.
First responders don’t just face physical challenges; they also bear emotional burdens. Witnessing the aftermath of accidents, crime scenes, or natural disasters can take a toll. The resilience they exhibit, coupled with the camaraderie of their teams, helps them navigate these challenges. Support systems, including counseling and peer support, are vital in ensuring their mental well-being.
The impact of first responders extends beyond their immediate actions. They foster a sense of security and trust within the community. Their presence serves as a reminder that help is always just a call away. Community outreach programs, educational initiatives, and safety workshops further bridge the gap between first responders and the citizens they serve. These efforts enhance understanding and cooperation, creating a stronger, more resilient community. Being a first responder requires immense sacrifice. The demands of the job can lead to long hours, missed family events, and the challenge of balancing work and personal life. Yet, many choose this path out of a profound sense of duty and desire to make a difference. This selflessness deserves our deepest respect and gratitude.

opportunities to educate the public about the roles and challenges faced by first responders. Celebrating these heroes encourages community members to engage with them positively and respectfully.
As a society, we can show appreciation in various ways. Simple gestures, such as thanking a first responder in person, participating in community events to honor them, or supporting local organizations that provide resources for first responders, can make a significant difference. Encouraging children to learn about these heroes and engage in community service fosters a sense of respect and gratitude for those who protect us. Many communities designate specific days to honor first responders, such as National First Responders Day. These observances serve as reminders of their sacrifices and contributions. They also offer
As we navigate our daily lives, it’s essential to pause and reflect on the vital role of first responders. Their unwavering commitment, courage, and resilience ensure our safety during our most vulnerable moments. Let us cultivate a culture of gratitude, recognizing the sacrifices they make for our well-being. Whether through words of thanks, community support, or simply being aware of their challenges, we can all contribute to a more appreciative and supportive environment for these everyday heroes. Together, let’s honor and thank our first responders, especially in our local communities, ensuring they know that their bravery does not go unnoticed. In every fire extinguished, every life saved, and every community strengthened, their legacy lives on.

The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered.
ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL
It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewü rztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.”
But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun.
“People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different.
“If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.”
For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and
I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey.
“With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.”
Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.”
What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.”
If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”
“If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”
What if I’m serving ham this year?
“Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”
What about dessert?
How much should I spend on a bottle of wine?
“If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”
“That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.”

THE RISING IMPACT OF TYPE 1 DIABETES IN AMERICA
ARTICLE BY JONATHAN BURGE
For over 18,000 youths in America diagnosed annually with Type 1 diabetes, life revolves around balancing dangerous blood sugar highs and lows. The American Diabetes Association reports that between 2017 and 2018, approximately 18,200 youths were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, compared to 5,300 with Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune condition where the body destroys its insulin-producing cells. There’s no cure, so management involves continuous glucose monitors and insulin
via syringes or pumps. Daily management is complex, requiring a constant balance between food intake and insulin for activities like work, exercise, and sleep.
Sleep can be disrupted by the “dawn phenomenon,” where the body releases hormones in the morning that increase blood sugar, even with overnight insulin. To prevent this, people with diabetes must adjust their carbohydrate intake before bed.
Physical activity presents unique challenges for those with Type 1 diabetes. They must carefully plan carbohydrate intake and adjust insulin doses before and after exercising. Neglecting this can lead to dangerous blood sugar swings, resulting in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), both of which can be life-threatening.
Managing Type 1 diabetes imposes significant financial burdens, with annual medical expenses averaging $19,736. Costs for those with Type 1 are 2.6 times higher than for those without the condition. These expenses, including insulin and glucose monitors, create immense strain on individuals and families.
Despite the challenges, there is hope. With diligent treatment, support, and monitoring, people with Type 1 diabetes can live fulfilling and successful lives. Ongoing research is crucial, as are advancements in technology, which continue to improve the quality of life for those affected by the illness.
Whether you have Type 1 diabetes or know someone affected, your actions can make a difference. Stay informed, support research, and advocate for better treatment access. Together, we can work toward a world where managing Type 1 diabetes is easier and, ultimately, where a cure is found.
“Type 1 diabetes is on the rise, affecting thousands and reshaping lives across America daily.”

Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County
SUPERHEROES FOR OUR MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON
ROBERTS
As we began planning our November’s issue focusing on “Thankful and Grateful”, I immediately thought of my experience volunteering and supporting a wonderful organization in our community, Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County (CACCC). I have had the pleasure of helping support the Center since 2014 through service and donations. In addition, it has given me some very special people that I am so thankful to call friends. It is with great admiration and pleasure for me to share a little about this organization and its staff. The remarkable people of CACCC are the superheroes of our area that fight for our most vulnerable citizens, our children, as well as their families that are affected by abuse or neglect. As CACCC’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynne McLean, MSSW says it best, “I am inspired by the CACCC staff who do this difficult, painful work. You can’t unsee what they see, you can’t unhear what they hear. And yet, their dedication and commitment to this mission and the children we serve knows no boundaries. There is no barrier too high for them to go over, too low for them to go under, or too wide for them to go around, when it comes to helping our children. No matter the time of day or night, our staff are always here to help, with a smile on their face and a passion for the work that never wavers. And they inspire me every, single day.”.
Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County (CACCC) stands as a vital institution dedicated to the protection and advocacy for children who are victims of abuse and neglect. With two locations in Plano and McKinney Texas, this organization plays a crucial role in the community by providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to address the complex needs of affected children and their families. By uniting law enforcement, child protective services, and mental health professionals in a supportive and childfriendly environment, CACCC strives to ensure that victims receive the care, justice, and healing they deserve.
As Kara Shrum, Senior Donor Relations Manager, explained, “The Center began as a project of the Junior
League of Plano, currently the Junior League of Collin County. When the Center opened its doors in Plano, TX in 1992, we had the staff, space, and resources to serve only 10 percent of the children in our community victimized by abuse or neglect. At that time, the total population of Collin County was 292,321. Currently, 1.2 million residents live in Collin County. CACCC offers services 100 percent of children victimized by abuse and neglect, and we will continue our mission into the future. Our goal is that no child is ever turned away from the services they need to heal and thrive, no matter how exponentially Collin County grows into the next decade. This goal was addressed by opening a new (nearly 40,000 sq. ft.) facility in October 2022, The Speese Campus, located in McKinney at 380 and 75.”.
As Kara explains, the mission of Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County is to provide safety, healing, and justice to children and families victimized by abuse and neglect in Collin County. The CACCC model brings services to the child instead of the child going from place to place to tell their stories multiple times, which can cause even further trauma. Core services provided by the Center include Forensic Interviews, Family Advocacy and Support Services, Therapeutic Counseling and Community Education. Woven by strong partnerships with our MultiDisciplinary Team members (including law enforcement, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, District Attorney’s Office, medical and mental health professionals), the Center has a high level of collaboration to address the needs of each case and each child.
`In addition, the Center has been rated as 4 stars on Charity Navigator, the Nation’s leading charity evaluator, for 13 years in a row, a distinction held by only 1% of charities in the nation.
Emotional and psychological well-being is crucial for recovery. CACCC provides individual and group counseling services, tailored to meet the unique needs of children and
“Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”
— John F. Kennedy
“The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children”
— Nelson Mandela
their families. Licensed professionals focus on helping children process their trauma, develop coping strategies, and rebuild their sense of safety and trust.
Recognizing that abuse affects the entire family, CACCC offers various family support services. These include crisis intervention, parental counseling, and the facilitation of support groups for caregivers. The objective is to empower families, helping them navigate their journey toward healing together.
CACCC is deeply invested in community outreach and education. Various programs are designed to raise awareness about child abuse, its signs, and prevention strategies. By educating parents, teachers, and children themselves, the center aims to foster a community that is vigilant and proactive in protecting its most vulnerable members.
An essential aspect of CACCC’s effectiveness is its collaborative approach. The center works closely with law enforcement, child protective services, medical professionals, and legal advocates. This partnership ensures that children receive comprehensive support throughout the investigation and recovery process, creating a seamless pathway to justice and healing.
Since its inception, Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County has profoundly impacted the local community. By providing a safe haven for children and families, the Center has advocated for countless cases of abuse, ensuring that victims are heard and supported. CACCC has helped to improve victim advocacy protocols and has trained hundreds of professionals in best practices for working with child abuse victims.
In addition to direct services, the Center also plays a significant role in community engagement, hosting events and fundraisers that raise awareness and foster support for its mission. CACCC is instrumental in building a culture of vigilance and responsibility when it comes to child welfare, encouraging community members to take an active role in protecting children.
Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County embodies a holistic approach to addressing child abuse and neglect. Through its diverse range of services, community education, and advocacy efforts, the center not only supports victims in their path to recovery but also works tirelessly to prevent abuse and promote a safer environment for all children. As a beacon of hope, CACCC inspires a collaborative community commitment to safeguarding its most vulnerable members and ensuring that they can thrive in a nurturing and loving environment.
There are many ways to support the Center throughout the year, including monetary support, in-kind donations and volunteering your time. The Center’s website (www.caccollincounty.org), social media channels, or e-newsletter –are great marketing resources in finding out about current needs, mission moments and statistics as well as upcoming special events, initiatives, and projects throughout the year. If anyone is interested in scheduling a tour at our facility, this is one of the best ways to first-hand “experience” our mission and learn more. You can contact our Development Team at development1@caccollincounty.org and they would love to host you!
The holiday season is quickly approaching! Join the Center in spreading joy to children and families victimized by abuse and neglect through its annual Holiday Project. As the number of children in need of our services has grown, so has the need to fulfill more holiday wishes. You can help deliver the gift of joy to these deserving clients. Texas Built, Texas Proud.
We’re proud to help strengthen our communities and build trusted partnerships along the way.
At Crossland, we don’t just build structures, we build relationships. Building So Much More is more than a motto—it’s our mission. Our commitment to personalized service goes beyond construction. We are proud to build the communities where we live, thrive, and volunteer.
From complete educational campuses and vibrant community facilities to expansive industrial parks and state-of-the-art retail centers, our portfolio is as diverse as Texas itself.
If you have a building project on the horizon, we’d love to chat!
