Thankful for You: A Message to Our Beloved Community

In 2024 I feel especially grateful for two things: My wife/editor, Katt, and our incredible community. From the moment I expressed my desire to start Blue Springs City Lifestyle, she has been by my side. Katt works full-time as a second-grade teacher then dedicates 3 to 5 hours each night to put this publication together for our community to read and enjoy. I am extremely grateful for her work ethic, her desire to learn, and her commitment to helping others, among many other amazing character traits. This magazine would be impossible without her.

The second thing I’m grateful for this year is our community. Starting this magazine in a community that has never had anything like it should have been nearly impossible. However, having grown up here, I knew the amazing people in our community would be the key to our success, and that’s exactly what we have experienced. You have embraced and taken ownership of this publication, just like I hoped and prayed you would. Creating a successful magazine requires many elements, but a supportive community is at the top of that list. With your support, I know we will achieve our goal of becoming a trusted benchmark in our community for decades to come.

As we enter this holiday season and prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly makes life meaningful and appreciate our many blessings.

Embracing

A Family’s grateful adventure through local trails

Shannon Sundberg, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, hasn’t always been interested in hiking, but now she truly cherishes it. For her, spending time on local trails isn’t just about exercising or the scenery; it’s about connection—both with nature and her loved ones.

Growing up in Blue Springs, Shannon has always valued the community. Now, she and her husband, Dan, have planted their family roots in Blue Springs with their two children, Anna and Ames.

Like many families, schedules are busy and it seems like there is something planned almost every night. However, Shannon and her husband dedicate one day each week to

putting the phones down, unplugging from technology, and connecting as a family in a timeless way-by spending time outdoors. Their family bond is strengthened through a shared love of hiking, which has become a cherished tradition.

The inspiration to begin hiking blossomed for Shannon and Dan while they were living in Utah. Shannon was attending Southern Utah University for graduate school, and Dan was teaching. Surrounded by stunning national parks, they decided to purchase a National Park pass. “We were captivated by breathtaking landscapes

and wanted to take full advantage of the beauty,” said Shannon. Upon returning to Blue Springs, they discovered local trails that allowed them to continue appreciating their surroundings.

During the spring of 2020, the COVID19 pandemic impacted everyone. Shannon recalls that time being transformative for her family. “With businesses closed and travel restricted, we began exploring local trails. We quickly fell in love with hiking at Lake Jacomo, and it soon became our weekly ritual, no matter the season. In the spring, we pull out our rain jackets and oftentimes come home with muddy shoes. If there is snow on the ground, we will bundle up in all our skiing gear and hit the trails.”

I LOVE UN PLUGGING FROMTECHNOLOGY, ESC TO NATUR E, AND RECONNECTING WITH MY FA

Shannon and her family enjoy numerous local hiking trails. The Auggie 3 Trail at Lake Jacomo is one of their favorite hiking spots. “The views are breathtaking, with stunning over-looks of Lake Jacomo and its intriguing rock formations, not to mention a fantastic view of Sailboat Cove,” Shannon said. The Lake Vista Trail is perfect for running or biking. Shannon particularly loves this trail after a fresh blanket of snow covers the ground, calling it a ‘picturesque winter wonderland’.

ESCAPING THE EVERYDAY RUSH

Instead of being indoors, surrounded by manmade structures and objects, nature allows her to experience the beauty of God’s creation. “As a family, we slow down and enjoy the little things that are often overlooked. We point out things to our children that they’ve never seen before, like squirrels darting about, the sunlight dancing on the water, the steam rising off the water, and the unique

shapes of leaves. We also encourage them to gaze at the clouds and use their imagination to find different figures within them.” This mindfulness helps ground Shannon and her family, fostering a deeper appreciation for their surroundings.

CREATING MEMORIES

One of Shannon’s most memorable experiences on the trails was discovering a long-forgotten arrow embedded in a tree on the Auggie Trail. “When you hike this trail, there are benches where you can rest and enjoy the beauty of nature. On one particular bench, if you look up about 25 feet, you’ll see an arrow sticking out of a tree from when the archery range was there. Every time we hike this trail, we look for the arrow. It serves as a special reminder of what once was and inspires us to look for other unique treasures.”

EXPLORING TOGETHER

Shannon and her family have a map that highlights all the different trails in Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit. They mark the trails they’ve completed and also identify those they plan to conquer in the future.

Local trails are more than just paths; they are vital to community well-being. Shannon reminds us, “Whether you’re hiking, running, biking, or simply enjoying nature, take a moment to slow down and appreciate God’s creation. Cultivate gratitude for the beauty that surrounds you.”

As Shannon’s family continues to explore different trails together, she feels immense gratitude for the beauty of the natural world and the time spent with loved ones. She hopes to inspire others to embrace their community’s outdoor spaces and discover the joy and connection that hiking brings.

In our fast-paced world, Shannon’s family serves as a reminder to slow down, savor the moments, and cherish the natural wonders around us.

connecting with the mayor

Blue Springs Mayor Chris Lievsay opens up about family, community, and the future

Take a few minutes and get to know Mayor Chris Lievsay, a leader profoundly connected to the Blue Springs community, as he shares his thoughts on community engagement, the momentum behind recent initiatives, and his hopes for a prosperous Blue Springs. We ask him to share his thoughts on leadership, the inspiration he draws from his family, and the collective efforts required to make our community a better place for everyone.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BLUE SPRINGS?

I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but moved to Blue Springs in elementary school when my stepdad married my mom. I’ve lived here ever since. After high school, I attended Blue River Community College and later earned additional degrees while working and raising a family. My wife, Grace, and I have been married for 19 years and have two children: our son Benjamin, and daughter Emily. We actively participate in their schools through the PTA and volunteer whenever we can.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

My family is my greatest inspiration and the reason I stay so involved. I care deeply about the future of Blue Springs—not just because I grew up here, but because I want it to be a place where my family can thrive for years to come. They motivate me to ensure Blue Springs remains a community where they want to live and raise their own families.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR IN YOUR ROLE AS MAYOR THIS YEAR?

Something I truly appreciate is the support from the community. I find that most residents are optimistic about the future of Blue Springs and invested in its potential.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AS MAYOR?

I cherish the opportunity to connect with community members. Whether I’m speaking at a school, visiting Vesper Hall, or simply out shopping and attending

events, I enjoy taking time to chat, learn about what matters to people, and greet their kids. Those moments are the most rewarding part of the job.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT BLUE SPRINGS?

I wish people, both residents and newcomers, could see the momentum we’re gaining in Blue Springs. The City Council and city staff are collaborating to create positive changes. We’re strengthening relationships with our three outstanding school districts, and two dedicated fire districts, and regularly meet with MoDOT to enhance responsiveness to residents. Recently, voters approved a $40 million bond for street and infrastructure projects, and we’re advancing the Downtown Master Plan while maintaining and developing parks. Our community development efforts are more proactive than ever. While progress won’t always be easy, I’m confident we’re moving toward a future defined by cooperation, just as we have in the past.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE COMMUNITY IN THE COMING YEAR, AND HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE THEM?

My hope is that we will continue to give the residents of Blue Springs more and more reasons to be proud to live in our wonderful city. I encourage everyone to engage with our efforts—attend meetings, volunteer, and share their ideas. It’s essential that we intentionally collaborate with community members and local organizations to foster positive change in Blue Springs. Ultimately, my greatest hope is that the residents see their lives improve year after year.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE FUTURE OF BLUE SPRINGS?

I am thrilled at the prospect of a thriving Blue Springs, filled with engaged and active residents, and attracting new opportunities and investments. I genuinely believe that the best is yet to come!

Thank You for Your Service

Celebrating the dedication and resilience of public service workers

In our communities, countless public service workers dedicate themselves to our safety and well-being, often without recognition. From brave firefighters rushing into danger to police officers ensuring security and educators inspiring future generations, these unsung heroes embody commitment and resilience.

This November, we’d like to spotlight their tireless efforts and express our gratitude, as we celebrate the stories of four remarkable individuals—Jeff Gale, Alex McIntyre, Briana Lutes, and Jordan Lockwood—who share their motivations, challenges, and the rewards of serving our community. Join us in thanking them and all public service workers for their dedication and unwavering commitment!

“The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for.”
— Norman Vincent Peale

Firefighters protect lives and property by responding to emergencies and providing essential rescue services. Jeff Gale of Central Jackson County Fire Protection District emphasizes the rewarding nature of his work, stating, “Working alongside my crew to tackle challenges during our calls is incredibly fulfilling.” Inspired by his parents—his mother a teacher and his father a police officer—Jeff initially considered becoming a paramedic but found his passion for firefighting at the fire station. “When we arrive, it often means someone is having a really tough day, and our training focuses on making those moments a little better.”

Jeff Gale

Alex McIntyre

Police officers are crucial for protecting communities through calls, investigations, and reports. Blue Springs Officer Alex McIntyre envisioned this role but discovered the true reward of working with a supportive team. “It makes coming to work effortless and strengthens my commitment to safety,” he explains. Captivated by flashing lights from a young age, today Alex finds satisfaction in improving the city through positive interactions. Inspired by selfless football players and coaches, he sought a career where hard work leads to success for the team and the community.

Briana Lutes

Joining the military wasn’t initially on Briana Lutes’ radar. “After some reflection, I realized it could provide the confidence and skills I sought, giving me a greater sense of purpose,” she shares. The most rewarding part of her military career has been the incredible people she’s met, forming lifelong friendships with those who share the military lifestyle. Serving in the Missouri National Guard has also allowed her to support those in need during disasters and her deployment to Afghanistan. “I’ve learned that support comes in many forms, and I know I’ve made a positive impact.”

Jordan Lockwood

Jordan Lockwood’s passion for teaching ignited in 8th grade when he read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. He realized that history is about real stories and lessons. “This book sparked a fire within me, and I knew I wanted to teach and share my love for history,” he recalls. The most rewarding part of education for Jordan is witnessing the lasting impact on students. “Whether it’s a former student returning or watching current students grow, it’s fulfilling to know I’ve made a positive difference.”

THE PERFECT FALL TREAT

ACORN DONUT HOLES

As the vibrant colors of summer slowly yield to the warm and earthy hues of autumn, there’s a distinct charm in the air at the arrival of fall. It’s a season filled with the crisp rustling of leaves, cozy sweaters, and the promise of pumpkin-spiced everything. What better way to embrace the changing seasons than by indulging in a delightful treat that captures the essence of both summer’s sweetness and fall’s rich flavors?

My recipe for “Acorn Donut Holes” combines the light, airy sweetness of summer donuts with the warm, comforting tones of fall. Grab your ingredients and let’s get started!

Ingredients:

• Donut holes

• Melting chocolates

• Fall sprinkles

• Pretzels

Instructions:

1. Pour your fall sprinkles into a small bowl for dipping. Lay wax paper down.

2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the melting chocolates in the microwave, about 15-20 seconds. Carefully watch to ensure they don’t burn.

3. Dip the top of each donut hole into the melted chocolate, covering about halfway down the donut.

4. After dipping, immediately dip the chocolate-covered portion of the donut hole into the bowl of sprinkles, coating it with the fall sprinkles.

5. Insert a pretzel into the top of the “acorn” to create the acorn stem.

6. Carefully place the decorated acorn donut holes on the wax paper to let them cool and allow the chocolate to set.

7. Once the chocolate has hardened, your acorn donut holes are ready to enjoy!

These delightful treats are perfect for fall and make for a fun and tasty dessert or snack. Enjoy!
