The Thankful Issue
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be.
Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season, as we prepare to gather with our loved ones and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings.
Blessings to you and your family,

FEEDING THE COMMUNITY
How Brad and Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s Grocery Store Styled Food Pantry is Uplifting Families in Middle Tennessee
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Food insecurity in Middle Tennessee is currently at a ten-year high, but The Store, located on Belmont University’s campus, is working hard to ensure that everyone has a place at the table. More than just a food pantry, The Store aims to unite the community and provide access to nutritious food for those in need.
“Real impact comes from serving people with dignity, offering fresh, healthy options.”
Founded by Brad Paisley and Kimberly WilliamsPaisley, the couple was inspired to create The Store after volunteering with their family at Unity Shoppe, a free supermarket in California. In March 2020, they opened The Store. Now, with demand growing, The Store plans to open a second location at TriStar Centennial Medical Center by late summer 2025.
What sets The Store apart from traditional food pantries is its grocery store model, where customers shop as if they were in any other supermarket; the only difference is that everything is free. Those who qualify can select a certain number of items based on household size. Fresh fruits and vegetables don’t count toward that total, ensuring that families have access to healthy, nutritious options.
“Food insecurity isn’t just about having enough food—it’s about having the right kind of food," says Collen Mayer, CEO of The Store. "Our data shows that
since we give people the choice, 98% of our shoppers leave with fruits or vegetables in their carts.” Mayer, who has a long career in nonprofit work, joined The Store a year ago. “I was deeply moved by The Store’s commitment to dignity and lifting up those who are struggling. It felt like the perfect fit.”
As demand increased, The Store began exploring a second location. TriStar Centennial Medical Center emerged as the ideal partner, as they were also focused on disturbing food and supplies to their patients experiencing food insecurity after discharge. “We maxed out our capacity at our first location,” Mayer explains. “We started asking ourselves, ‘How can we do more?’ Right around the time we were talking about expansion, TriStar Centennial reached out. They were seeing the same needs within their hospital, and we immediately realized our values were aligned.”
The Store works alongside volunteers and other nonprofits to help further the reach, and their team is thankful for every member of the community who lends a helping hand. Organizations like Nashville Diaper Connection, The Community Resource Center, and Once Upon a Farm, along with several others, donate regularly to its inventory, and Belmont University provides the space as well as partners for their wrap-around services. However, much of what can be seen on the shelves is purchased by The Store to ensure quality products.
“One of the biggest misconceptions about food insecurity is thinking it’s solved with leftovers and surplus goods," Mayer notes. " Real impact comes from serving people with dignity, offering fresh, healthy options. It’s about more than just meeting their food needs—it’s about ensuring they leave with their spirits lifted.”
Addressing food insecurity goes beyond just providing meals. It also entails building community, uplifting individuals, and keeping a sense of dignity. At The Store, individuals leave with more than just food; they leave with a sense of hope, and that impact is far more meaningful.
“The Store’s purpose is to bring the community together to tackle food insecurity,” says Mayer. “It’s a place where families, companies, and volunteers can come together, where customers feel like part of a supportive community. We’ve built this large network of people and nonprofits, wrapping our arms around our neighbors to ensure they have enough and are lifted up.”

ALEX STOIANOV DETAILS THE STORY OF HE AND HIS WIFE KATERYNA’S JOURNEY THROUGH HARDSHIPS AND HOW DANCE CHANGED THEIR LIVES FOREVER.
ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM | PHOTOGRAPHY
Alex Stoianov is the Principal Dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine and serves as the Artistic Director of the Grand Kyiv Ballet. Born and raised in Yalta, a small city in Crimea in southern Ukraine, Alex first became fascinated with dance at eleven years old when he saw ballroom dancers on the television one night. In awe of the beauty - from the movements to the costumes to the people – he asked his mother if he could take classes himself. Within six months, he had already
received praise from audience members and had won several awards. For one night only on November 24th, The Grand Kyiv Ballet will be showcasing a performance of The Nutcracker at the iconic Grand Ole Opry House here in Nashville.
Knowing that dance was in his blood from an early age, Alex’s parents sent him to Kyiv, where he could learn from the best at the Kyiv State Choreographic College. This journey led him to meet his wife, Kateryna Kukhar - who is also a

professional dancer and has since had a successful career at the renowned National Opera of Ukraine. Their story is one that symbolizes inspiration and resilience. Alex recalls feelings of “love at first sight” the moment he laid eyes on Kateryna. They've been married for sixteen years, and the pair currently reside in Seattle - their temporary home - due to the conflict in Ukraine. When the war first erupted, they were in France preparing for their final performance in Menton,
continents away from their two children. Just prior, they had rehearsed Giselle together, a poignant moment amidst the turmoil unfolding back home. Originally planning to return to Kyiv, their lives were upended when they received news at 5 a.m. of the war's outbreak and bombings.
With the help of friends and family, they worked tirelessly to evacuate their children from Ukraine. Regrettably, not all their relatives could be relocated to a fully secure location, as Kateryna's
parents bravely chose to remain in Kyiv, demonstrating unwavering strength in the face of adversity. Fortunately, they were reunited with their loved ones three days later, but this life-altering experience led to a profound change in the Grand Kyiv Ballet's mission. The couple works endlessly to give back to their community in Ukraine. Kyiv State Choreographic College became a full circle, as he and Kateryna are currently conducting renovations and restoring the children’s dormitory.
“This school is my alma mater… also my wife’s," Alex shares. "She started managing this college in pandemic times... It was a difficult time for all ballroom dancers. After the pandemic, we had a great year before my wife started remodeling the ballet college. The building was old and had been running for eighty years under bad conditions. During this time, the war started and all money that was invested was sent to our military. After this, we tried to do it all on our own.”
More than 200 ballet dancers, both students and artists, evacuated Ukraine during the unrest. Alex has since started four ballet companies to bring work to many of those dancers and company members displaced from Ukraine. Now taking their ballet to over 140 cities nationwide, Alex shares they have
received several letters from folks all around the country thanking them for bringing the art of ballroom dance to their small city, as it is something we are not always exposed to here in the States. Feedback like this fuels Alex and reminds him of the importance of bringing beautiful art and emotion to everyone.
“It's still a very difficult time – not like two years ago when the war started – but all of us understand we need to move forward and give back to our children and their future,” Alex says. “Our city is destroyed, our people died, but they never
destroyed our culture. That’s why we try to show our beautiful culture and ballet all around the world.”
Grand Kyiv Ballet is proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds from this event will be directed towards the renovation efforts of the Kyiv State Choreographic College in Kyiv. By attending the performance, audiences not only bear witness to a captivating ballet but also contribute to the preservation and enhancement of this esteemed institution.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION, WITH CAROLINE PACE
Caroline Pace Shares What It’s Like Being An Up-AndComing Independent Film Director
ARTICLE BY MARY COMPTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY AUSTEN AND JESSE KORMAN
Real movie jargon is not like in the movies at all. The phrase “lights, camera, action” is not actually used on set, but rather “Sound speeding! Camera speeding! Scene 1A! Action!”
Then, there is a clap of the slate and “Cut!” when the director is satisfied with the shot.
The director poised behind the camera, ready to capture the scene, is Caroline Pace. This is the life and enthusiasm of a director, writer, producer, and occasional actor. Pace grew up in Brentwood before moving to New York City after completing college at Belmont University to pursue the art of filmmaking her way.
New York is the perfect environment for a young and “scrappy” creative, as Pace describes herself and her friends. “Scrappy” and “resourceful.” You have to be to make it in the arts like she has.
Pace found her passion for filmmaking when she was young. Her mom’s intuition told her Pace would be a successful director, buying her a flip camera to christen the beginning of her journey. Pace likes to be a little “campy,” she says, with a twist of humor in her stories. She likes to emulate movies like Shaun of the Dead that film in this tongue-in-cheek style, telling a tale that resonates with the audience’s funny bone.
Pace is currently working on a web series called Final Girl . It’s named after a theme in slasher movies where the final survivor is a girl, the last one standing, the heroine, and the final good girl left
alive. But what happens after these horrific events? Pace goes on to tell the aftermath in a jocular fashion. Where is the final girl now? What is her purpose? Where does she fit in this world?
“I definitely will always have elements of humor in things, whether irony or just straight-up gags. And just fun,” says Pace, hoping the audience will walk out of the theatre and say, “I’ve had a lot of fun with that.”
On making the web series, “I get so invested in the stories I write. I think having a team of people you love to work with makes it so much better,” says Pace, enthusiastic about the upcoming web project.
Pace’s filming style is to take the shot and take a couple of extra shots, as Pace calls it her “insurance” shots.
Only 26, Pace has achieved several films, festivals, and jobs within the industry. She likes to participate in many 24-hour and 48-hour film festivals. One short story submitted was a sock puppet soap opera that won its festival and was submitted to the national division. The film won again and was then sent to the international division, where it placed first runner-up.

“I GET SO INVESTED IN THE STORIES I WRITE. I THINK HAVING A TEAM OF PEOPLE YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH MAKES IT SO MUCH BETTER,” SAYS PACE, ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE UPCOMING WEB PROJECT.

Deep-Fried Stuffing Recipe
Recipe credit: allrecipes.com
This Thanksgiving, give your stuffing a modern-day twist with deep-fried stuffing balls. This take on the traditional side dish is easy, delicious, and guaranteed to impress guests.
INGREDIENTS
• ½ cup all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp poultry seasoning
• salt and ground black pepper to taste
• 2 eggs
• 2 tbsp milk
• 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
• ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 1 tsp ground black pepper
• 2 ½ cups prepared stuffing
• 1-quart oil for frying, or as needed
DIRECTIONS
Step One: Combine flour, poultry seasoning, salt, and black pepper in a shallow bowl. Beat eggs and milk together in a second shallow bowl until smooth. Mix bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper together in a third shallow bowl.
Step Two: Scoop stuffing, about 2 tablespoons per serving, and roll into a ball using your hands, forming about 12 balls. Dredge each ball through the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Transfer each ball to the egg mixture and evenly coat. Roll each ball in the breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated. Set stuffing balls on a plate; set aside to allow the coating to stick.
Step Three: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step Four: Carefully lower 4 to 5 stuffing balls into hot oil and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 4 minutes; transfer to a paper towel-lined plate using a slotted spoon. Repeat with remaining stuffing balls.

Traditions of Mill Creek Is Thankful For Its Staff and Residents
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
With holidays right around the corner, it's important to make sure that your loved ones are taken care of during this time. As caring for aging parents and grandparents becomes more challenging, ease the stress by considering a move to Traditions of Mill Creek. Here, their well-being and quality of life are prioritized in a luxury retirement community. With the capacity to have 130 residents, Mill Creek offers a range of living options, including assisted living, memory care, and independent living. Residents can enjoy their golden years in a state-of-the-art facility where they can choose from a wide variety of activities and programs to engage in, promising an active lifestyle.
“It’s an incredible atmosphere, which is exactly what you want,” explains Jeff Barger, a member of the marketing team. “Whether you’re a resident there, or your family is there, the staff is incredibly dedicated, caring, and supportive, which is just really crucial.”
One of the key reasons Mill Creek operates so smoothly is thanks to their exceptional staff, who work tirelessly to provide residents with access to the best care imaginable. From hosting coffee clubs, yoga, and happy hours to bringing in live entertainment consisting of pianists, guitarists, and even karaoke nights, they’re always ensuring that residents are having as much fun as possible. Mill Creek also stands out by offering EyeWatch LIVE, a cutting-edge AI safety monitoring system, in their memory care, setting them apart from other facilities. Additionally, they provide a check-in program for independent living residents, allowing families to feel at ease knowing there is someone consistently checking on their loved one.
“It’s a warm, inviting, and bright place,” Sales Director Suzanne Tolbert says. “So many people have this preconceived notion that senior living is this dreary, dark, depressing place, but then people come in to see a more modern, vibrant, and bright environment. They see our residents active.”
Having fun doesn’t end when you move into a retirement community, and Traditions of Mill Creek is proof of that. Both the staff and residents are thankful for the community that Mill Creek has created. They are getting ready for both fall events and the holiday season.
“We are planning a fun Casino Night on November 14th,” Tolbert says. “People are welcome to come out and have some fun with us and get a feel for the community. We are going to play games like poker, roulette, dice, and more.” They’re also hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for residents and their families to remind them of the community that Mill Creek offers during what could be a hard time.
“I’m personally thankful for our amazing residents, staff, and the resident families that are there,” Barger explains. “We have some really amazing people in this building that are working there every day to make residents’ lives better and more enjoyable. We have some really amazing residents, and then we have some really incredible and caring families that are a part of it. It’s a real community.”
What is often a challenging transition in life, Mill Creek goes above and beyond to make it as personalized as possible. They remind both residents and their families that they’re never alone, with a built-in community ready to support them and build meaningful relationships with residents throughout their lives at Mill Creek.
“We’ve got great residents,” Tolbert says. “They’re inspiring, and they’re funny, and they’ve accomplished so much. I mean, people just have no idea the incredible, interesting lives that they’ve lived, and sitting down and having those conversations with them is meaningful.”
Traditions of Mill Creek is more than just a retirement community; it’s a place where residents truly feel at home. Between the tight-knit community and the exceptional amenities, Mill Creek ensures a lavish lifestyle for its residents. Visit their website today to schedule a tour.

Thankful For Queso
FOR ME, HOLIDAYS CAN BE TOUGH. GRATITUDE (AND GREAT QUESO) MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY
1. MAÍZ DE LA VIDA QUESO FUNDIDO
Julio Hernandez spent years researching and perfecting the art of creating the perfect corn tortillas. His passion for his culture is evident in everything he does, which is why the debut of his October brickand-mortar restaurant opening at Paseo South Gulch is so exciting. As with the life-changing tortillas, Julio has also perfected his Queso Fundido for the opening (and, of course, it comes served with a stack of his crazy good corn tortillas). Maíz de la Vida’s debut Queso Fundido is served on a bed of refried beans and caramelized onions, with gratin quesillo cheese that is shipped to Nashville weekly via BNA cargo from an Indiana-based cheese farmer who uses local Amish whole milk to make the cheese!

2. TORCHY’S TACOS GREEN CHILE QUESO
A beloved chain that started as a trailer in Austin, Torchy’s Tacos just opened in Nashville in September (I promise I’ve been harassing them to do so on social media for years!). Sure, they have fun tacos (and a secret menu) and really killer branding, but I will go down in history saying that Torchy’s consistently serves my favorite bowl of queso in life. It’s won awards for a darn good reason. It packs a lot of heat and comes topped with a dollop of guacamole, cotija cheese, cilantro, and fiery Diablo sauce. (Don’t forget to ask for extra Diablo sauce on the side for an extra kick!) Torchy’s finally opened in Nashville the same week my book was released, so that will always remembered as one of my favorite weeks in life.

3. VELVET TACO RED CURRY COCONUT QUESO
If you’re in the mood for something a little different, Velvet Taco is the place to be. While they are known for their globally inspired tacos, their duo of queso options deserve their own spotlight. Creamy and decadent, VT’s Red Curry Coconut Queso is a legendary combo of heat and sweet. It’s a smooth blend of cheese and spices that definitely turns the idea of “traditional” queso on its head. Topped with pickled onions, queso fresco, and Thai basil. But if you’re in the mood for that, the queso blanco is also worth ordering.

4. SOPAPILLA'S CHILE CON QUESO
A musician who missed home while in Nashville and on the road brought a “taste of New Mexico” to Tennessee over a decade ago, and my queso-loving heart is especially thankful he did. Even if you’re not obsessed with queso, I think Sopapilla’s is a must-visit. Their queso is a delightful blend of assorted gooey cheeses and savory house seasonings, some onion, and roasted Hatch chiles. You can even make a meal out of it by adding smoky brisket to the bowl! (Then you can save room for their signature sopapillas for dessert!)
1109 Davenport Blvd #600, Franklin sopapillas.com
5. CHUY’S QUESO
Last but certainly not least, Chuy’s might be a chain, but it is a consistent staple for queso lovers (not to mention that creamy jalapeño dip and their spicy “boom boom” sauce! Their famous queso is a fan favorite, featuring a rich blend of melted cheeses, green chilies, and ranchero sauce. It’s the ultimate comfort food, and there’s something about the lively, colorful decor that enhances the entire experience. Whether you’re dining in or getting takeout, Chuy’s queso is sure to satisfy your cravings and leave you feeling thankful for every cheesy bite.

This Holiday Season Keep Germs From Visiting
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Preventative tips and recommended treatments for children and families
The holiday season is a great time to get together with family and friends. Unfortunately, along with the festivities, it’s also the time of year for illnesses to make an appearance, especially in children.
“There’s the RSV virus, which in the tiny ones can be dangerous because they can have trouble breathing,” says pediatrician Dr. Jill Kelly of Brentwood Pediatric Care. “Luckily, there’s a new vaccine that I highly recommend for kids under one.” She’s also treating the usual illnesses like colds, ear infections, strep throat, gastrointestinal infections, and COVID-19, but she has seen some influenza start early this fall and more cases of pneumonia than in recent years.
While treating the symptoms of these illnesses is critical, Dr. Kelly likes to focus first on prevention. During well visits, she discusses the importance of eating a well-rounded diet with limited highly processed foods, living an active lifestyle, and staying mentally fit.
Most caregivers teach children to wash their hands well with soap and water, use hand sanitizer, and cover their mouths with their arms when coughing or sneezing, but there’s a lot more to staying healthy.
“Being well rested is also a good way to stay healthy because being overtired can make you more susceptible to infection,” she says. “Another way is
to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, which increases the amount of antioxidants that prevent and fight infections.” For kids who are nutritionally deficient, a children’s vitamin is recommended.
Wiping down all surfaces in the home, especially those that are frequently touched, such as door knobs, faucets, and refrigerator handles, can decrease the spread of many germs as well.
Dr. Kelly encourages parents and caregivers to make sure children are up to date with all their vaccinations, too. “The flu shot is great, especially for kids who have asthma.” Flu medicines can be effective at reducing the length and severity of symptoms if the illness is diagnosed within 48 hours.
However, despite doing everything right, a virus or bacteria can still take hold. Fortunately, she says, there are treatments that can ease children’s symptoms and discomfort.
Have children rest as much as possible, provide plenty of fluids, and for children over six years old, give cough and cold medicines. For kids over the age of one, honey can soothe throats and calm coughs. For the real little ones, parents can give Zarbee’s®, a sugary herbal concoction that can ease coughs. Using a humidifier in the bedroom moistens airways, and while it may not take a cough away, it can ease the severity. If they have a fever or are achy, children's Tylenol or Motrin can help.
When a child gets sick, it often spreads to the whole family. Wiping down all surfaces with antibacterial wipes is even more important to keep germs at bay. “Everybody in the house should be washing hands well, and unless the child is young and needs to be with a parent, it’s a good idea to have them isolate themselves as much as possible,” she says.
While many illnesses can be treated at home, there are times when children should definitely see a doctor. “If they have a fever over 24-48 hours and bothersome symptoms like a severe cough, increased work of breathing, rash, frequent vomiting, persistent pain, or other more concerning symptoms, they should probably be seen to evaluate if more treatment is needed.”
Sometimes, an emergency room visit may be warranted. If an infant under two months old has a fever, she says they should probably go to the emergency room. And, of course, any issues with breathing also need emergency care.
Dr. Kelly is thankful to be able to help children in their healthcare journeys and has been doing so for over 20 years. “I like being able to see my patients
TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS HEALTHY THIS
HOLIDAY SEASON:
• Make sure they get plenty of rest
• Provide a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables
• Wipe down all surfaces in the home
• Keep up to date with vaccinations, including those for flu and COVID-19
• Visit a doctor regularly for well visits
being born and then follow them as they grow. I also enjoy getting to know the families and building relationships with them.”
Having her own practice, Brentwood Pediatric Care, which she opened in 2022, has allowed her to be more in control of the quality of care she wants to provide. She created an environment and team in which children and their parents feel comfortable. “I have picked some really sweet people who are hardworking and have a good heart.”
They often brainstorm ways to make the office welcoming, so when little patients walk in the door, they’ll find chalkboards and lollipops, and sometimes, a small bottle of bubbles to bring smiles to their faces.
When the really young ones need a shot, they’ll be given a little stuffed animal to help ease the pain. As a mother of two boys, 20-year-old Jack and 17-year-old Josh, Dr. Kelly can empathize with the kids and their parents and understands the importance of family.
She and her sons, along with her husband, John, and 3-year-old Maltipoo, Doug, live in Brentwood, where they enjoy dining at local restaurants and just walking around their neighborhood.
The family also loves traveling together and stays very active boating, wakeboarding, snowboarding, and skiing. “We like to take care of our bodies and be healthy, and I feel that there’s a strong mind-body connection,” says Dr. Kelly. “For me, my faith helps keep me grounded spiritually and mentally, and I think that helps me physically. I think it's important for everyone to have a sense of belonging, whether it's with your friends, your church, or your family.”

Mele Kalikimaka
Visiting Hawaii During The Holidays
ARTICLE
“Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say / on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day…” famously sung by Bing Crosby, tells of sunny holidays sought by tourists for decades. Don’t fancy the snow and plunging temps? Have a White Christmas with sand instead in Hawaii! Each Hawaiian island has its own unique flavor, starting with Oahu, the capital.
Everyone pictures the white sand and sparkling surf, and if relaxing on the beach is what you want for your holiday vacation, then it's available in spades. If you are looking for activities to get your blood pumping and adrenaline spiking, there is plenty of that, too.
Adventure enthusiasts, conservationists, and tourists alike will enjoy a two-hour boat and snorkel trip with One Ocean Diving leaving from the North Shore. One Ocean Diving is the brainchild of famed Shark Whisperer Ocean Ramsey and her husband, Juan Oliphant. I have followed them on Instagram (okay, stalked) for years and was so excited to make this trip to swim with sharks. There are multiple boat trips a day that depart from the North Shore, but I recommend taking the first one out for the day, 7-9 a.m. It’s a short boat ride, where you can see the shore
the entire time and whales depending on the time of year. Some people wore wetsuits, but I did not use one, and I was fine. Bring your GoPro for some great footage, and yes- you will see sharks! The two most common shark species you will see are Galapagos and Sandbar sharks. The sharks are curious but also intimidated by you, and I was so excited when a little sandy swam up to check out my GoPro!
If you would rather get your kicks on land and like hiking, then the Koko Crater Railway Trail is for you. This is a hike that firemen train on, boasting about a mile and a half straight up the crater. There are over 1000 “steps” that are actually railroad ties. This is a very difficult hike and not one that I would recommend for small children or pets. However, if you are adventurous and in good shape, then this is a formidable hike rewarded with a breathtaking view.
If you need something easier, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike is an easy to medium hike about a mile and a half in the Lanikai neighborhood. The pillboxes are a series of military bunkers on the mountainside. I did this hike before sunrise on New Year’s Day when it was very dark. I sat on a pillbox on the edge of the mountain, watching the sunrise over the islands. There was something spiritual about watching the dawn of the new year over the ocean on the side of a mountain.

Whether you have grown up in the water, want to learn to hang ten, or just love the movie Point Break , Hawaii is the best place to learn to surf. When I decided to take a surfing lesson, I went with Sparky (from Sparky’s Surf School) and had an amazing time! I am incredibly clumsy, but Sparky had me up and riding waves on Waikiki in no time!

ABLE To Give Back
MISTI BLASKO DETAILS HER JOURNEY AS THE FIRST FEMALE CEO OF ABLE AND WHAT THE MISSIONAL ASPECT OF THE COMPANY MEANS TO HER
ABLE was created to give back. Founded with the intention to give better opportunities to women, founder Barrett Ward felt his life change after going on a mission trip to Peru in 2001. At the age of thirty-one, switching from a career in corporate sales to one in the nonprofit world, he and his wife, Rachel, decided to move to Peru when Rachel accepted a work opportunity in Ethiopia. The pair moved there to pursue helping women who were living in difficult circumstances.
“It is important to me to be a part of a brand that truly gives back.”
In 2013, he began teaching women – many of whom had been trafficked – how to make scarves to sell during the holidays. Scarf making is a largely male-dominated industry in Addis Ababa, but with training and dedication, these women sold over four thousand scarves in just two months.
Transitioning from scarves to leather, Barrett became aware of the leather factories in Ethiopia that curated goods with intricate detail and design. ABLE then began collaborating with manufacturers across the world to create leather totes, wallets, and small leather goods. This new product expansion allowed ABLE to continue to support vendors in Ethiopia and help them grow their own businesses. With thoughtful consideration, ABLE values top-quality products, wage levels, and especially how they care for women in the workplace. Fashion is one of the largest employers of women worldwide, and
women make up 75% of the fashion workforce. In 2017, ABLE created a social impact reporting tool called ACCOUNTABLE, which measures the impact on its supply chain and workers, most of whom are women.
Misti Blasko was recently hired as the first female CEO of ABLE. Bringing twenty-five years of diversified experience in the fashion, retail, and consumer goods industries, she has held various senior executive and leadership positions at leading fashion brands such as AllSaints, True Religion, John Varvatos, and BCBG. In addition to her expertise in growth strategies and operational efficiencies, she is actively involved in GenHERation, a female empowerment network, and serves on the Board of Women in Retail Leadership.
“It was through the Women in Retail Leadership Circle that I was introduced to Nashville’s best-kept
secret: ABLE,” Misti says, speaking on how she first became part of the company earlier this year. “I was drawn to the brand because it seamlessly blends good products with an even better mission. Then, when I was introduced to the leadership team and the incredible women working at ABLE, I knew I had found the place I wanted to be for my career journey.”
As a woman in retail leadership, Blasko shares that supporting organizations that foster growth and education for women in the industry is a personal and professional passion of hers.
Sharing what it means to her to be part of an organization that thrives on giving back to the community, Misti states, “working in retail, it should come as no surprise that I have been selling ‘stuff’ my entire career… now, however, I have been given the opportunity to give back to the community and support women not just in Nashville but internationally through ABLE. It is powerful to be a part of a brand that not only participates but seeks to create opportunities for positive change beyond profit.”
At ABLE’s Nashville headquarters, women make up 99% of the team. The thoughtfully curated collection, featuring high-quality leather bags, women’s apparel, denim, and handmade jewelry, is designed to blend style, functionality, and comfort–ensuring you both look and feel your best. Prioritizing quality and longevity, ABLE also makes it their mission to find the most environmentally responsible materials that stand the test of time and wear. ABLE also works to create safe, dignified jobs both in Nashville – where their home office, jewelry studio, and fulfillment center are - and around the world through their partnerships with value-aligned manufacturers.
“To me, giving back builds a sense of community, purpose, and responsibility,” Misti shares. “It recognizes that no one is entirely on their own, and by giving back, individuals and organizations can help to uplift their neighbors experiencing challenges, contribute to social equality, and create a cycle of support and empowerment that turns into tangible change. On a personal level, giving back can bring fulfillment and meaning, knowing your efforts are making a positive impact on others" lives.”
Together with their customers, they believe they can drive the fashion industry forward, demonstrating the positive impact that occurs when both the customer and the worker are valued.

STAY IN STYLE

A
PLACE WHERE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS CAN FEEL AT HOME AND LOCALS CAN ENJOY A VACATION
When the AC Hotel opened its doors in September of 2021 in the heart of Hill Center in Brentwood, it was with the goal of offering its clients a modern and upscale place to stay that’s convenient for shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. “This town has its own historic landmarks and stories, but many of us are so used to going into Nashville to do everything,” says General Manager Demetrius Patterson. “Being in Williamson County, guests don't have to leave the area to have a great experience.”
The initials AC actually stands for Antonio Catalán, who was the founder of the brand when it was started in Madrid, Spain. “When Marriott got involved, they wanted to acquire the culture of a European boutique-style hotel, so they kept AC as the initials,” he says.
That European-style ambiance is imbued throughout the hotel, including in its beverages and food. “We’re definitely focused on taste and experience, so we're always looking to create something that looks good to the eye but also appeals to the taste buds,” says Demetrius. “Instead of the traditional breakfast spread, we offer spinach and cheese quiche, baked frittatas, croissants, and espressos. The tapas style menu we offer also feeds into that European style.”
This spirit is incorporated into its guest rooms as well. With floor-to-ceiling windows, they are light and airy with a modern, open concept. “All of our rooms are designed to have maximized openness, so guests have a nice space to set up at the desk and work or relax on the couch,” he says. “It gives those extra features that you would only have in a suite in most hotels.”
The property also features a stylish rooftop bar that overlooks the hills and exudes great energy all around. “We specialize in a sensory-based experience, so when you walk into our hotel, we
want the music that you hear to be just at the perfect volume - not too loud - but loud enough that it makes you want to pat your feet if you're having a drink at the bar.”
With the holidays coming, Demetrius and his staff are looking forward to welcoming many out-of-town guests who will be visiting family and friends in the Brentwood area. “AC Hotel is designed to offer a comfortable, elegant, and effortless environment during a stay, and when people are traveling, the one thing they want is comfort,” he says. “And our neighbors want their family members to have the same amenities they would have if they were staying at their homes.”
Locals are also encouraged to stay and experience a mini vacation away from the everyday stresses of life. A lot of times people don’t know or appreciate what’s close by and think they must leave their hometowns in order to find a little excitement.
“We love having locals stay, and we even promote a Discover Brentwood package where they can experience our bar and our breakfast and also get 20% off,” he says. “Staying here over a weekend gives them the ability to see their town in a different light and do the things that our travelers and tourists do.”
During the holidays, the hotel lobby transforms into a real winter wonderland with a modern spin. “Guests will be able to experience that Christmas spirit with the beautiful tree and holiday music.” Various holiday packages can also be found online to make the stay even more festive.
To ring in the new year, a plan is in the works to host a New Year’s Eve party. “We would love to have local businesses partner with us, and, of course, we would also love to have the businesses and residents around us hold their holiday parties here at the hotel,” says Demetrius.
Over the last three years, the feedback from guests has been incredibly positive, he remarks. They can easily walk to get something to eat or do a little shopping, and the one thing that they really appreciate is AC Hotel’s clean and modern esthetic. “There’s not a lot of clutter. It is all very minimalized, and it has been a wonderful experience for them to see a hotel not be in a traditional light.”
Being a newer property, many people don’t always know the hotel is here. “We would love to cater to our locals and their guests from both an aspect of lodging and entertainment,” says Demetrius. “We would love for them to come and have a drink with us, get a bite to eat, and listen to live music.”
So, book a stay for yourself or your guests soon, and enjoy all that AC Hotel has to offer.

Some Of Our Favorite Thanksgiving Family Traditions
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK
Here at Brentwood Lifestyle, we are so thankful for our families and loved ones. As we celebrate the holiday season, we’re excited to share some of our favorite family traditions, from recipes to activities, all of which are perfect for making this time of year even more special. We hope these family traditions bring you and your loved ones moments of joy as you partake in them!
Jennifer Downs' Sister’s Fall Bouquet:
Jennifer’s sister, Jess Langer, has an organic farm that she has been running with her husband, Neal, for eight years. Jess’s passion is flowers, and she does local events where she can source everything from her garden.
WHAT YOU NEED:
• Strawberry blonde sunflower
• Cornel bronze dahlia
• Plume celosia
• Pincushion flower
• Zinnia dried starflower
• Emerald tassel amaranth
• Rudbeckia
• Ornamental grass
• River oats
• Eucalyptus
STEPS:
Step One: This fall, you can create a beautiful arrangement using very few ingredients. If you are cutting flowers yourself, make sure to do so during the coolest part of the day. If you’re sourcing them elsewhere, give them a fresh 1/2 in-1 in cut.
Step Two: Allow your flowers to hydrate in a cool, dark space overnight. The next day you can begin arranging!
Step Three: Start with your greenery and filler flowers. Cut them at different heights to add dimension.
Step Four: Add your focal flowers to see where they really pop.
Step Five: Play around with the ornamentals to add texture and whimsy. As a personal preference, Jess doesn’t like using even numbers of anything, as she finds uniformity quite boring. There are no rules here, so remember to have fun and don’t be afraid to experiment! Bouquet all day!
Stephanie Krejci’s Mom’s Chicken Adobo:
Chicken Adobo is a traditional Filipino dish that has bold flavors and is easy to make. This recipe has a serving size of 4-6 people. While this recipe traditionally doesn’t include coconut milk, Stephanie and her mom utilize it to enhance the flavors. Stephanie also prefers her Chicken Adobo to be spicier.

• 2 1/2 to 3 lbs of boneless chicken thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)
• 4 garlic cloves finely chopped
• ½ of a white onion diced
• 1 cup of light coconut milk
• 2 bay leaves
• 1/2 Tsp of cracked pepper
• ¾ cup of white vinegar
• ¾ cup of soy sauce
• 1 ½ cup chicken broth
• 2 tbsp of sugar
• Optional: habanero pepper/ any chile pepper
STEPS:
Step One: Sauté garlic and onion together with chile pepper.
Step Two: Add chicken into sauté mix and let simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Step Three: Add white vinegar, soy sauce, chicken broth, cracked pepper, sugar, bay leaves, and then let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes.
Step Four: For more spice, leave the pepper in. If not, remove the pepper.
Step Five: As it simmers, pour in coconut milk and let it simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
Step Six: Then, serve with steamed rice.
