Happy March

M

y sweet mom used to remind us, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Growing up in Michigan, we hoped and prayed that was true. By March, we’d had it with shoveling, muddy icicles mucking up wheel wells, freezing grey days and the lack of sunshine. Here in BuckHaven, March will mostly come in like a lamb and go out like a soft fluffy chick. Our mild winter (“winter”) has left me longing for cold days made for big pots of chili and fireside chats. Instead, we’ve grilled every weekend, sipped gin and tonics right through February and spent afternoons chatting on the front porch. Not bad at all! What ever you’re cooking this month, I hope you’ll gather your favorMe and my new friend at Home Ranch ite people around the table and give thanks for good health and good in Colorado where food. We have so many places to dine right here near home (should snow sports, horses you not feel like peeling, slicing or dicing) and hope you’ll share your and gourmet dining competed for my favorites on our Facebook page. attention last month. We recently ate at Nickolai’s Roof, the upscale French-Russian dinner spot with city views set on the 30th floor of the the Hilton Atlanta Hotel. The new urban chic decor adds a formal flair to the small dining room. Check it out next time you're downtown. We also like Davio's for dessert and had a chance to meet the talented pastry chef, Qiana Jacobs whose works of art were photographed by Scott Areman for our cover story. More good food news from our friends at Atlas. Atlas, the acclaimed restaurant located at the St. Regis Atlanta celebrating both art and seasonal American cuisine combined with European influences, has introduced The Tavern at Atlas. The newly designed library and lounge opens at 4 p.m. daily and offers guests fresh menu of locally-sourced small plates and hand-shaken cocktails served in a comfortable and lively atmosphere. “We want to create an experience that’s left up to the guest. We hope The Tavern at Atlas will become a go-to destination for creating social connections fueled by a spirited bar and live music,” says Atlas General Manager Geno Dew. Created by Executive Chef Chris Grossman, The Tavern at Atlas menu boasts perfectly portioned small plates crafted to be shared at by guests at their leisure. New favorites include petit lobster pot pie; citrus-cured salmon flatbread; Atlas sliders; Island Creek roasted oysters on the half shell; rosemary roasted ruby beet tartare; 24-hour cast iron seared steak and more. Tell them we sent you in to toast to your beautiful self! Cheers! Enjoy this issue full of good food and cheers!

BLUE HERON WINS Park Pride awarded Blue Heron Nature Preserve a $150,000 Legacy Grant to start a Blueway Trail Initiative. This grant program is funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation. “The Blueway initiative was born out of the strategic plan, in which we identified our desire to activate the park,” said Executive Director Kevin McCauley. This initiative is called a Blueway because it follows creeks through the Preserve. Three miles of trails will connect the Preserve’s habitats, providing passage across streets and creeks. Trails are ADA accessible where possible. “A Blueway trail is a great way to get people outdoors for recreation and interpretive information,” said McCauley. The trails pass four Field Education Centers highlighting habitats at the Preserve. Park Pride’s Legacy Grant begins the $500,000 fundraising effort for the Blueway. After the internal Blueway is completed, subsequent phases will connect the Preserve to trail destinations, beginning with Chastain Park and PATH400.

LOCAL ARTIST LOVE Carre' d'artistes at Phipps Mall has recently announced it will represent Atlanta artist Ronnie Beets. Ronnie Beets was born in Brazil and raised in east Tennessee. In spite of a traditional upbringing, Ronnie was drawn to art and compelled to create. While exuding the undeniable influences of Modern masters like Picasso and Chagall, his work remains boldly unique covering a broad spectrum of styles from pure abstraction to stylized realism. Ronnie is selftaught and exhibits regularly under the brand name aRtBeets. His work hangs in private collections across the United States and internationally. “I have chosen to live a life consumed by Art. Once I dismissed the notion of the 'Starving Artist’, I was free to evolve into a greater version of myself. T

he Sandy Springs-based Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is set to host another spectacular soiree at the Delta Flight Museum with its

seventh annual Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, on Saturday, March 11. All proceeds from the event support the organization’s statewide education and awareness efforts and community outreach programs. Last year’s gala drew 700 attendees and raised almost $250,000. The GOCA team hopes to raise that bar even higher this year with a dazzling night in store including dinner created by Les Dames d'Escoffier International - Atlanta Chapter Chefs, specialty cocktails, dancing, casino games, tributes and live and silent auctions. Guests of honor at the gala are two very special women – Amie Moore, whose battle with ovarian cancer tragically ended at the age of 23, and Emily Coughlin, who was diagnosed at 14 years old and is now a junior at the University of Georgia studying cancer research. Partners of the Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, which is produced by Sean O’Keefe Events and presented by Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, include Deoleo,

Events. “Not only does it honor and celebrate the women in our community battling this elusive and deadly disease, such as my grandmother who passed away from ovarian cancer, it raises vital funds to support them along their journey. You can really feel spirits lifted and a sense of hope and camaraderie in the air during such a magical night.” The community is invited to support the cause by purchasing individual tickets to attend the event at ShakenNotStirredGala.com. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well. Anyone unable to attend the gala, but still interested in contributing, can donate online or bid online in the gala’s fabulous silent auction, which includes jewelry, a British Virgin Island Sailing Charter, a Zulu Nyala African Safari and many other travel experiences. For more information or to get involved further with GOCA, please visit GAOvarianCancer.org or call 404-255-1337. The mission of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA), a 501c-3 non-profit, is to increase awareness and educate Georgia’s women of all ages, their families and the healthcare community about the risks and symptoms leading to early detection. GOCA serves the state of Georgia with public outreach programs, education and awareness efforts, and fundraising events. With no sure way of predicting ovarian cancer and no single screening test to identify it at the earlier, pre-symptomatic stages, awareness and education are an urgent priority for all women in order to protect themselves from late-stage ovarian cancer.

When you dine at an Italian restaurant in Atlanta, you wouldn’t expect to see a pie on the menu. No, I’m not talking about pizza pie, I’m talking about a flaky, buttery pie crust filled like a shepherds pie or a chicken pot pie. At Storico Fresco Alimentari e Ristorante, the timballo was just that: a pie filled with Berkshire meatballs, tortelloni, ricotta, grana padano and pomodoro. “Timballo is a celebrated dish for Italian festivals and religious holidays like Easter and Christmas,” says co-owner Mike Patrick. “At Storico Fresco, we wanted to make this dish (that is known for being inaccessible) accessible to our customers.” Turns out this distinctly Italian dish varies depending on the region. In Emilia-Romagna, rice, game birds and pasta are the choice for filling, whereas in Sicily the timballo is stuffed with eggplant and pasta. Patrick traveled to many of these regions of Italy to explore and learn the culinary art of the country, from working in a porchetta production facility and pasta facilities throughout the country, to connecting with the pasta-making networks of local nonnas (Italian grandmothers). Some may know the Storico Fresco name primarily from the stand at Peachtree Road Farmers’ Market, which has been a mainstay at the market since 2009. Patrick started with just a pasta production facility that occasionally hosted pop-up dinners with themed menus, but his passion for owning an Italian restaurant was always in the back of his mind. Once he met with Pietro Gianni, now his partner in Storico Fresco, the Italian eatery and specialty grocery store became a reality. When dining at Storico Fresco, deviate beyond the traditional Italian offerings of Bolognese and ravioli, because the menu boasts many other diverse pasta shapes. “Many Americans assume that filled pasta is ravioli, but that is not the case,” says Gianni. “For example, our pi fasaac (which means swaddled baby) is an example of a unique pasta shape that delicately holds the cheese and spinach filling.” Storico’s lunch and dinner menus are similar, although lunch portions are smaller and offer a section of paninis. For Antipasti, the Callipo tuna with cannellini beans, lemon and parsley is a

refreshing way to start the meal. If you want to go for a more indulgent starter, try the panzerotti. Imagine a miniature calzone the size of a hand pie and deep fried, then stuffed with smoky caciocavallo cheese, finocchiona sausage and ricotta that oozes out at first bite. Portions are sizeable at dinner and one plate will satisfy your appetite. If you’re in the mood for a sweet, filled pasta, go for the bertu con guanciale, semi-circles of Italian sausage and ricotta-filled pasta topped with cotechino, a meat similar to salami. If you can handle the heat, the chitarra arrabiata is your spicy version of spaghetti, with mozzarella di bufala campana to tone down the spiciness. The Mains focus primarily on meat-heavy offerings, such as the tender, fall off the bone costola, a Barola-braised short rib served over creamy polenta. Make room for dessert and get the zeppoli, two fried dough balls with a zingy lemon cream filling. Those who prefer some caffeine for dessert should go for the affogato, zabaglione semifriddo (a creamy egg-like custard) topped with espresso. Use Storico’s Alimentari to purchase hand-made pastas and try your luck with them at home. The retail pasta menu rotates every three weeks, so you’ll always have different options. You can even get a slice of the timballo, with vegetarian or chicken meatball varieties in addition to the Berkshire meatball option that is on the dine-in menu. Another difference between the menu and the market is the lasagnas, where you can order from a variety of different vegetarian options in addition to the classic “carne” offerings. At Storico Fresco, the atmosphere is vibrant and energetic, so come here when you don’t mind a little bit of ambient noise. You’ll find yourself in a little pocket of Italy in the heart of Buckhead.

Y

ou may be familiar with the bright blue and yellow food truck, Yumbii, that pioneered Atlanta’s food truck

movement. Now, this first and favorite food truck adds service beyond the streets with its first brick-and-mortar restaurant that opened in this past December. Yumbii’s founder, Carson Young, has finally bridged the gap that is so often a hassle in the food truck culture. “The best part about having a brick-and-mortar store is that now our customers can find us anytime, all day long!” Yumbii’s permanent parking space is on Peachtree Street in South Buckhead. Fans of Yumbii will still find the global fusions of Asian, Mexican, and Southern flavors, such as tacos, quesadillas and burritos, but new options are added including rice

bowls, nachos and a daily taco special. With multiple fillings to choose from- Korean BBQ chicken, spicy pulled pork, Asian rib-eye beef or tofu- it can be hard to decide what to pair together. Here’s a few ideas: Korean BBQ chicken and panko-crusted tilapia add a crispy crunch to the soft tacos. For burritos, the restaurant’s version is a bigger portion than the food truck and is stuffed with rice in addition to its traditional accompaniments. Add Asian rib-eye beef for a sweet and umami flavor. When deciding on what to pair with your quesadilla, go for the spicy pulled pork, which blends harmoniously with the melted cheese. While the food truck has lunch and dinner covered, the restaurant offers another added appeal. Coming in spring, Young is excited to introduce brunch, so add another spot to your weekend list and check out their inventive breakfast tacos. The larger kitchen and addition of an alcohol license and bar allow the Yumbii crew to get creative with these new offerings. Now finally the true pairings with tacosbeer, wine and margaritas - can be enjoyed by visitors. The 1440-square-foot restaurant is well-lit and colorful with homages to the food truck throughout the space. As the restaurant settles in, you’ll soon find the white walls adorned 24

with colorful photos that chronicle the history of Yumbii’s growth in Atlanta. The location across from Piedmont Hospital is perfect for the lunch crowd that want fast counter service. Dine-in at the limited tables indoors, and come warm weather, be sure to snag a seat on the patio and sip margaritas while overlooking the bustle of Peachtree Street. “Many of our current customers live in Buckhead and asked us to open in the area, says Young, on why he chose the location for Yumbii. “I also grew up in the neighborhood and currently reside in Buckhead, so it feels like home!” Since the food truck’s start in 2010, it has been awarded “Best Food Truck” by Atlanta Magazine, Creative Loafing and The Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the stand-alone restaurant aims to warrant the same accolades. “We’re thrilled to have a permanent space where our guests can eat, drink and stay – rain or shine,” says Carson.

2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC300 Roadster AN AFFORDABLE GERMAN GEM. ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON

T

he all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC300 Roadster realizes the dreams of even their most frugal enthusiasts by delivering an attractive, hardtop convertible replacing the SLK line starting at $47,950. At first look, the exterior restyling of its more rounded front, diamond grille, LED lights, tail lamps and

rear bumper were not only evident, but applauded. Under the hood, the 2.0L inline-4 Turbo engine boasts 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft torque to responsively expedite lane changes, get jumps on green lights, and ultimately feed the driver’s hunger for road-grabbing power controlled by 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission. The efficient, wallet-friendly gas mileage (25 city/32 highway) further sweetens the deal.

re you a wine lover? Then don’t miss “The Big One,” the 25th year of the High Museum

Atlanta Wine Auction, March 22–25. The Auction is the largest charity wine auction in the United States benefiting the arts and the largest fundraising event for the High Museum of Art. The co-chairs for the 2017 Auction are wine enthusiasts and philanthropists Vicki Palefsky and Alessandra Potts. Palefsky, a resident of Buckhead, has been a supporter of the Wine Auction since 2006. Potts, a resident of Milton, is owner of the wine storage business Vine Vault and has been a supporter of the Auction since 2010. Since launching in 1993, the Auction has welcomed more than 12,000 guests and uncorked more than 60,000 bottles of the finest wines from 400 of the world’s top wineries. To further delight your palate, amazing chefs from Atlanta’s most renowned restaurants bring their culinary creations to the table. Proceeds from the Auction have amounted to more than $26 million over the last 24 years and provide significant funding for the High’s exhibitions and educational programming. Wine Auction Week officially begins March 22 with Dine Around Dinners at local restaurants, tasting seminars, Winemaker Dinners at private homes, and more. The festivities wrap up with the Friday Fete on March 24 and the Vintners’ Reception and Live Auction on March 25.
