We thank all of you!

Dear friends,

November is here, and with it comes one of our favorite themes—giving thanks. We’re beyond excited to share this special issue with you! As the holiday season ramps up, it’s the perfect time to slow down, reflect on what truly matters, and connect with those around us.

In this  Give Thanks  issue, we’re focusing on the little things that bring us together—whether it’s sharing a meal with family, volunteering to support a local cause, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the people who make our lives brighter. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, but we want to remind you that this season is about so much more than busy schedules and long to-do lists.

We’ve packed this issue with heartwarming stories, community spotlights, and thoughtful tips on how to give back. We hope you’ll find inspiration to get involved locally, slow down and savor the moment to appreciate how special our hometown is. November is about connection—both to the people around us and to our greater communities. Make time for what matters most, give back in meaningful ways, and experience the joy of true gratitude.

Wishing you a season filled with warmth, generosity, and lots of reasons to give thanks!

See you at Starlighting!

WHEN ALLEN GRESHAM TURNED 90 IN THE ICU, CASTLE ROCK ADVENTHEALTH DELIVERED MORE THAN JUST CARE—THEY GAVE HIM A CELEBRATION TO REMEMBER.

EXTRA-MILE CARE

Allen Gresham Presented With the DAISY Award

It all began when Allen was feeling not quite right and was rushed to the ER by his children, Ron and Kathy. The medical team at Castle Rock AdventHealth swiftly took over, diagnosing Allen with a stroke. The exceptional care and efficient response from the ER

“THEY

Allen found solace in the kind gestures and comforting words of the staff.

“The way they treated me, it was like they knew what I was going through,” Allen shared, his voice heavy with gratitude. “They didn’t just look after my health; they cared for my heart.”

DIDN’T JUST LOOK AFTER MY HEALTH; THEY CARED FOR MY HEART.”

team were just the beginning of what would turn into a remarkable journey of recovery and compassion for Allen and his family.

Transferred to the ICU, Allen’s situation was critical but stable, thanks to the careful attention of the hospital staff. During his five-day stay, the nurses and doctors went beyond their basic medical duties to ensure Allen felt supported and cared for, especially as he faced his 90th birthday that very week.

“One of the most touching moments,” his daughter Kathy recalls, “was how the nurses celebrated Dad’s birthday. They brought balloons, a card, and even ice cream after their shift. It wasn’t just a celebration; it was a declaration of their dedication to making patients feel at home.”

The level of empathy shown by the AdventHealth team was profound. Having lost his wife earlier this year,

As he prepared for discharge from the hospital, the nurses came to offer personal goodbyes and well wishes.

Moved by the extraordinary care he received during his stay, Allen Gresham took a heartfelt step to express his gratitude by nominating the entire nursing staff at Castle Rock AdventHealth for a DAISY Award. The DAISY Award is a prestigious national program established to recognize and celebrate the exceptional compassion and skill that nurses display in their interactions with patients and their families.

Allen’s nomination was an acknowledgment to the profound impact that the AdventHealth nurses had on his recovery and overall experience during a particularly vulnerable time. From a family member’s perspective, Kathy and Ron praised the hospital for its transparency and communication.

“Staying informed was indispensable, and the staff made sure of that,”

Kathy said. “Their thoroughness reassured us immensely, and the fact that I could stay by Dad’s side the whole time made a world of difference.”

Their experience with other parts of the hospital were equally positive. “It didn’t matter where I was; staff would always stop to ask if I needed help or had any questions. It was like having a guardian angel in every hallway.”

Reflecting on his experience, Allen expressed a resolute preference for AdventHealth should he need hospital care in the future.

“While many might head north for care, I’d tell them to consider our local gem right here in Castle Rock. It’s not just convenient; it’s exemplary.”

“IT

WAS LIKE HAVING A GUARDIAN ANGEL IN EVERY HALLWAY.”

His story not only emphasizes the clinical excellence of AdventHealth but also highlights its commitment to compassionate care. In a world where healthcare often becomes a routine service, Castle Rock AdventHealth stands out by ensuring that every patient’s needs are met and every heart is touched—even in the most challenging times.

“Next time I’m feeling under the weather,” Allen joked with a twinkle in his eye, “I might just miss the nurses too much and pop in for a visit!”

Making a Difference With Movement

Meet the faces behind Castle Rock’s famous Turkey ROCK Trot and its host organization, RUN to Change Lives.

On Thanksgiving morning, the 20th annual Turkey ROCK Trot will once again take over the streets of Castle Rock, starting at the Douglas County Event Center. The race not only kicks off the holiday but also unites the community for a good cause. It is Castle Rock’s largest attended running race, indoor expo, and a beloved Thanksgiving morning tradition. At the heart of it all are Jason and Gina Anguiano, the dynamic duo dedicated to ensuring this event continues its long success and expands its impact.

Jason and Gina, both Colorado natives, moved from Denver to Castle Rock in 1997. They raised five children in the area and watched the town grow alongside their family.

“I was not a runner until my late 30s,” admits Jason. “What really drew me into it was the community.”

His love for the running community led him and Gina to participate in a Turkey ROCK Trot as runners years before they became volunteers for the race. In 2015, they were asked to take over as Race Directors. Now, each year, they coordinate the massive undertaking of putting the event together.

“Imagine planning a wedding for 3,000 people,” Jason jokes, explaining what goes on behind the scenes of an event like this. From coordinating road closures to ensuring safety and securing volunteers, the logistics are a marathon of their own. The preparation starts six months before the race, with Jason and Gina juggling hundreds of conversations with sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and security teams to make it all come together.

Despite the challenges, the Anguianos embraced their new roles and, through close collaboration with local businesses and volunteers, saw the race grow from 1,000 participants to over 3,000 in their years as Directors. For the couple, the event is more than just a race. It’s a way to unite the community for a greater good.

In 2019, they took their passion one step further by launching RUN to Change Lives, a not-for-profit organization that uses running as a way to make a positive impact on the community. By fostering community and sharing inspiration, they connect runners of all levels together over a common goal.

Jason and Gina Anguiano
“It has nothing to do with how fast you are,” Jason emphasizes. “It's just that you're committed to making a difference with your movement.”

“We always had a passion project for getting people to move for a good cause,” Jason explains. The races support charity efforts by raising funds for various nonprofits and meaningful causes.

The organization hosts three major races each year, including the ShamROCK Stampede in March and the ROCK IT RUN on July 4th. Both benefit causes that are close to their hearts, such as mental health support for veterans and first responders.

Through their efforts, RUN to Change Lives has created a community that stretches beyond Castle Rock. The Facebook group, which they launched during the pandemic, now has more than 6,000 members from across the globe who share their stories, progress towards goals, and offer support to other members.

RUN to Change Lives also hosts an ambassador program with participants from various countries, encouraging people to move at their own pace while raising funds for causes that matter to them. Whether ultra-marathoners, casual joggers, or walkers, everyone’s movement matters.

“It has nothing to do with how fast you are,” Jason emphasizes. “It’s just that you’re committed to making a difference with your movement.”

RUN to Change Lives sees a 25-30% growth year over year, with more people joining in to support both local and global causes. The mission is about empowering people—of any shape, size, speed, or ability—through movement.

While the organization’s growth is impressive, it’s never been about the numbers for Jason and Gina but simply about going further together.

This philosophy of moving together for a good cause has helped solidify the Turkey ROCK Trot and RUN to Change Lives as pillars of the Castle Rock community. By registering for the Turkey ROCK Trot this year, participants directly support the Help&Hope Center, which provides vital assistance to neighbors in Douglas and Elbert counties facing economic hardship, homelessness, or crisis.

Community is the heart of the race. RUN to Change Lives is about spreading the message that no matter your pace, we can go further together and make a positive difference.

Castle Rock Welcomes a Vibrant New Center for the Arts

TRI ARTS PROJECT OPENS ITS DOORS AT THE HISTORIC CANTRIL BUILDING

In a celebration blending history with creativity, Castle Rock’s first dedicated center for the arts, Tri Arts Project (TAP), officially opened its doors in September with a lively ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Cantril School Building. A crowd of local officials, business owners, and community members gathered to witness the highly anticipated event and tour the facility.

“We had 200 name tags, and we ran out!” says Dana Frazee, President of TAP. “The turnout was beyond our wildest expectations.”

Founded in 2022, TAP is a non-profit organization powered by volunteers and sustained by a network of private donors. Its creation was driven by a deep community desire for a central space dedicated to the arts. Partnering with the Town of Castle Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department, TAP secured space in the historic Cantril Building to establish the arts center.

At its core, TAP’s mission is to provide a place for the education, creation, and presentation of the arts. It’s a bold and promising vision that has already garnered enthusiastic support from residents and town leaders alike.

The center’s launch comes with an impressive slate of offerings—nine diverse classes in its inaugural month, and another 12 being offered in November. The workshops range from watercolor painting and videography to cookie

decorating and felt hat making. Each class carries a modest fee, covering materials and providing a stipend for instructors. It’s a formula designed to make the arts accessible while supporting local talent.

One such talent is muralist Erma Woodis, who will lead a class on large canvas painting techniques. Woodis is particularly passionate about welcoming beginners, especially those who doubt their own artistic potential.

“My goal is to teach people who think they’re not artists that they can learn,” she says. “I love showing people how creative they can be!”

The setting for these creative pursuits is the historic Cantril School Building, a landmark that has graced Castle Rock since 1897. Located just outside the town’s downtown, the two-story Italian Villa-style building is rich with character, offering a beautiful blend of history and potential. Currently, TAP utilizes two classrooms in the 14,000-square-foot facility, with more spaces expected to open as renovations continue. It’s a fitting home for a center that aims to foster both community and creativity.

In May 2023, the Town of Castle Rock officially purchased the building from the Douglas County School District, laying the groundwork for its transformation into an arts center. The city has been funding the work to restore the building and bring it up to code.

“TAP’s mission is to provide a place for the education, creation, and presentation of the arts.”
Board members Adam Sheridan and Jacque Ruff at the TAP booth at Ducky Derby
“My goal is to teach people who think they’re not artists that they can learn.”

Beyond its classes, TAP seeks to offer rotating exhibitions featuring a wide range of talent from the Castle Rock area including special exhibitions showcasing work from TAP teachers and students. These exhibitions will aim to engage the community and showcase its diverse artistic talent.

As the first of its kind in Castle Rock, TAP is setting the stage for a new chapter in the town’s cultural life. With a packed schedule, exciting classes, and a community eager to participate, TAP is quickly becoming a cornerstone of creativity in the region.

Brief History of Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon and Whiskey:

The Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897 was passed to differentiate straight whiskey from all others including blended and artificial whiskey’s on the market at the time. The Bottled-In-Bond Act guarantees that 1) all the whiskey in the bottle comes from the same distillery in the same season, 2) must be aged at least four years in a government bonded warehouse and bottled at 100 proof, 3) must identify the distillery, 4) and only water can be added.

Today, Bottled-In-Bond is still a federally regulated term but it is a voluntary process. It ensures the bourbon you are drinking adheres to a tradition and guarantee of quality. While personal preference in your whiskey remains subjective, Bottled-In-Bond Bourbons are an indication of a “craft” spirit
