SEPTEMBER 2017
T
he September issue in the editorial world is traditionally the biggest production of the year featuring all things fashion. Why one might ask? I sure did, and after digging around, I found the best explanation from good ole Vogue, the encyclopedia of fashion. September is the signal of summertime coming to an end. As school gets back in session and work revs up again, it’s a fresh start to the year while temperature drop and leaves begin to change. Bikinis, shorts and tank tops no longer reign supreme, and we’re all looking for a little inspiration to fall into (get it?). And nothing says inspiration like a full blown fashion spread. Inspired by all of the above ^ a small crew including photographer Joe Friend and stylist Edie Ure ventured south to the Great Sand Dunes to catch the hot sun and sand a little longer. “When we sat down to talk about the September fashion issue I had two immediate thoughts.” Says Ure, stylist and art director. “1/ We live in one of the most majestic and naturally diverse states, and where better than to photograph the fashion editorial than against one of Mother Nature’s most enchanting accomplishments, the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s a dramatic backdrop featuring the tallest Dunes in North America. 2/ I really wanted to use strong Colorado Women, models, who reflected a truer picture of our state. The world is a multicultural society to which we all belong, we definitely need to celebrate that more,” says Ure. THE SHOOT DETAILS

Harmony and Peace WHEN LIFE’S STRESSES SEEM OVERWHELMING, RETREAT TO JALAN FACIAL SPA TO FULLY UNWIND AND RESTORE YOUR INNER AND OUTER GLOW. ARTICLE SAM TRUEHEART | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS
T
here’s an old zen adage that says, “You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes everyday—unless you’re too busy; then you
should sit for an hour.” And for me, life was swirling with business; I could barely sit down to check Instagram let alone spend the time meditating. I was past the point of reasonable, normal stress. To calm my mind and give myself some self-love, I decided Jalan Facial Spa was the perfect retreat I needed to get out of my head and relax. Jalan Facial Spa is in the heart of downtown Denver and centered around helping you restore and feel your best by using Eastern Asian traditions with modern skin care expertise. Every guest at Jalan Facial Spa embarks on a self-paced journey to finding their inner harmony. First, I began my experience with a custom-blended lemongrass tea and a complimentary coconut cookie from Mama Kim—the founder of Jalan Facial Spa and owner of many restaurants throughout Eastern Asia. Next, I was taken to soak my feet in a warm footbath. Because we were in “fire” season, my footbath had pink Himalayan salt, Epsom salt, coconut oil, and sweet orange and clove essential oils to soothe, cool and center myself. Once I felt ready, I made my way into the meditation garden; a beautiful space with cushions and a zen garden to drop into a tranquil state. I noticed my shoulders softening and my jaw beginning to relax. Stephanie, my esthetician, came to get me and start my 75-minute advanced facial. As a novice to facials, I showed my ignorance by getting on the bed belly-first. But Stephanie had a cheerful attitude that helped ease my embarrassment and lessen my stress even more. She examined my skin and pinpointed specific areas that needed extractions or more moisture. I quickly fell into a deep meditative state and fully relaxed throughout the entire process. By the end of the session, all stress and anxiety had vanished. Once finished, I was taken back into the meditation garden to listen to an audio meditation that focused on healing, freedom and acceptance. Once complete, I watched soothing ocean scenes on a screen while drinking a red date tea with goji berry and dianhong. The entire experience at Jalan Facial Spa completely unraveled my stress and helped me enter back into the busy streets of Denver with a little more inner peace.

HOW DOES BEING A “DENVER-ITE” INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
Denver has one of those unique cultures where there’s an eclectic group of people. There’s still a fashion scene, but I think comfort is very important, so that’s something I try to have in all of my clothes. It is also one of those places that feel like home. I’m not originally from here, but I’ve lived here for 20 years, so it just feels like family and every time I do a show or an event, it’s such a warm welcome. I did New York Fashion Week back in 2012, and it’s a great experience, but it’s just more of that ‘time is money’ mentality. You get to see that business side of fashion, which is all what we’re trying to do, but Denver is a bit friendlier. It’s more forgiving, and that allows designers to be more experimental so that we can be more artistic. We can have a little more fun with our fashion, whereas in New York, you might be a bit more scared to take a risk. I feel like I’ve evolved as a designer and an artist here because I was able to explore and find what I like and what I don’t like as a brand. WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT YOUR FOLLOWERS DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Probably how big of a nerd I am. I love anime, and I love K-pop, I love things that traditionally designers aren’t supposed to love. We’re supposed to be these chic creatures, and everyone wears black and is very serious, but I’m more of a kid at heart, and I think that’s what keeps my brand alive. I like to bring a little more whimsy to my collection. HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO SHAKE UP THE DENVER FASHION SCENE?
My studio is broken up into two sections--one side is where all the magic happens, and the other space is used for meeting with clients and has that fashion atelier feel. I’m trying to bring that culture back where it’s a more intimate [shopping experience]. You can come in and feel like you’re shopping in your own closet. I think there are those people who love fast-fashion, but there are still those people who are looking for really unique pieces and want to get pampered and know the face behind the brand.

HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF THE DENVER FASHION SCENE FOR AWHILE?
I would say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ because I’ve been here eight years and, in our twenties, my partner, Sean, and I used to go out and dress crazy, club-kids style, and go to fashion events and art shows. But I really just recently started getting more serious about it and being more active in the fashion scene and not just showing up and being ‘fabulous.’ YOU JUST HAD YOUR FIRST RUN WITH DENVER FASHION WEEK, HOW DO YOU THINK IT WENT?
I’m super proud of myself! After doing three months of straight work and stressing myself out, overall, it went well, but I realized that I work better at my own pace. I pretty much dyed everything myself and a lot of zippers were involved, like the backs of the jackets unzipped and the pants unzipped, so it was a lot of work! I think I would do even better if I had six months and could leisurely work on it and have my ideas develop more. I NOTICED YOU HAVE ZIPPERS AS YOUR EARRINGS, TOO. ARE THOSE KIND OF YOUR THING?
Yeah, [growing up] I was a little ‘punk rocker’--I put that in air quotes because I was such a poser--but I was in that scene for a few years, and I guess it really soaked into my brain. They’re very decorated--the colorful hair, paint everywhere, plaid, leopard and fur-that’s just kind of what I find cool now. I was basically babysat by MTV and Nickelodeon, so 90s and 2000s hip-hop is another thing that I think has seeped into my [style]. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOOK YOU’VE EVER PUT TOGETHER?
I took a tailcoat and a pair of jeans, bleached it and then had Sean, who does hair and makeup, paint it. We took different color fabric dyes and put them in shot glasses and he watercolor-painted the tailcoat and pant, so it’s just this beautiful rainbow piece. I originally made that for myself, and I wore it to Artopia in Denver a few years ago, and I kind of brought it out of the woodwork recently, and everyone loves it. It was a good project because I got to collaborate with Sean and his work is amazing--anything he touches is gold in my opinion.

CCL: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE
CONCEPT FOR H&R? JWM: It really was born out of necessity.
Facing the typical rental tuxedo horror for our wedding a few years ago, I was at my wit's end. The salesperson at the big box menswear chain we were checking into barely knew how to take my measurements, plus all of the styles there were so dated. My then-future wife Jessica, a costume designer for film and TV, suggested we meet with one of her show menswear suppliers who made tuxes in the latest styles for easily a third of the cost the big chain rentals were producing. After doing our wedding and several of our friends’ weddings through these showbiz clothing suppliers, our families sat us down and said, “You guys are onto something. Make it a business.” We launched our website in early 2017 with several made-to-measure tuxes and suits as well as a custom suit options. CCL: EXPLAIN WHAT MADE-TO-MEASURE
MEANS VS. CUSTOM. JWM: Made-to-measure (MTM) is taking your
body type and creating a suit from it using a pre-existing pattern. MTM is leagues above buying a suit “off-the-rack” in that once it is tailored, it should to fit you perfectly. Custom in our business means taking your exact body measurements and crafting a suit that is made only for your body as opposed to using the MTM tenet of matching your measurements to a pre-existing pattern. Custom suits come at a higher price point, but the colors, styles, and fabric choices possible for your look are endless! CCL: INTERESTING. WHERE DID YOU GUYS
GET THE NAME “HEYWOOD & RINGO?” JW: (laughs) One of us (points to Jay) noto-
riously butchers song lyrics. He actually thought the opening line of Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl, which is “Hey where did we go?” was “Heywood and Ringo”! After hearing it, I thought that’s the name of a future company. And here we are. 54

Y
ou’ve decided to list your home…now it’s time to get it ready for showings! Here are eight quick and simple ways to keep your
home looking fresh and welcoming.
1
SPRUCE UP YOUR PLANTS
APPLY A FRESH COAT OF PAINT A new layer of paint is a quick way to clean and brighten up your home. It quickly does away with scuff and scrape marks while making the space look new.
3
Matching knobs and handles are a subtle shift that brings cohesion to a kitchen or bathroom’s look. Make sure drawers and cabinets are opening and closing smoothly. A sticky drawer is a simple fix but could be a big turn-off for a potential buyer.
A good caulking job goes a long way! A tidy and cared-for bathroom makes people feel comfortable and safe. Re-caulking can make your bathroom look new.
4
PURCHASE NEW LAMP SHADES Spice it up with some bright colors or mix up your design. A new lampshade with a different style or color scheme can change the whole decor of a room.
DEEP CLEAN YOUR HOME Though it might take a little longer than new lampshades, deep cleaning your home makes a significant difference. Getting all the nooks and crannies you might miss during your routine clean brightens up your home, shows attention to detail, and reassures your potential buyers that you’ve cared well for this home.
7
2
FRESHEN YOUR CABINET HARDWARE
RE-CAULK SINKS AND BATHTUBS
5
Coming Soon!
Trim dead leaves and excess branches, clean up fallen leaves, or pick up a cute new pot. Don’t have plants? Never fear! A vase of flowers on the dining room table or in the kitchen is an easy way to make a huge difference.
6
A leaky faucet never bodes well, and having shiny new faucets in the bathrooms and kitchen will make the room sparkle. Hit up a nearby Home Depot or Lowes while you’re already there getting paint or new hardware for your cabinets.
Getting updated carpet or new rugs throughout the home can really change a room. A simple rug can add a pop of color, or tie together the furniture and new lamp shades perfectly. Add a few colorful pillows to tie the room together.
