The Season of Giving Thanks

In this season, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings.

Blessings to you and your family, RACHAEL

COZYING UP WITH A GOOD BOOK

BOOKS THAT INSPIRE A GRATEFUL HEART

It’s that time of year to fill your cup with something pumpkin spice and get lost in another world. Having an amazing book to read is as comforting as a walk in the crisp air or the aroma of pumpkin bread in the oven. Here are recommendations for all ages that inspire gratitude and thankfulness.

The Gratitude Jar

Sometimes all it takes to recognize and appreciate your blessings is a new perspective. In a world of entitlement and comparison, it can be easy to dwell on the material things others have that we do not. Mina’s complaining inspires her mother to begin a gratitude jar and soon things begin to change for the whole family. Feeling gratitude is a learned skill through modeling. Find the biggest jar you can and begin to fill it up with all your blessings. What a physical and visual model for the whole family to recognize what truly matters. Open the jar on Thanksgiving for a new holiday tradition.

A Rover’s Story

Science fiction is not my genre, but I am reformed. Follow this Newbery honor author as she takes the reader on a journey to Mars with a fictional rover named Resilience. Res has been created by NASA scientists to explore the planet and return with information. But how could scientists know that Res would develop human emotions that would take him on a journey that exceeds the mind of his programmed database? We can do hard things. We can grow and change and stretch and improve. Being thankful for challenges and resilience (what a perfect name for this character) along the way can be positively transformative. And sci-fi fans are going to love it! Does Res make it back to earth? No spoilers here.

This mystery/thriller is an unlikely choice for a book on gratitude. But joining Whitaker and his amazing characters will confirm that relationships and those we choose to love can make your heart explode with gratitude. As we follow Patch through a lifetime of searching, his commitment to his unfaltering beliefs and blinding hope cement the importance of people in our lives who truly matter and who hold us close to their hearts. Building strong relationships helps us navigate in such a disconnected world. Guard those relationships and hold tightly to hope, always.

Local business supports customers with IT and cybersecurity at a deeper level

ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BETZHOLD PHOTOGRAPHY BY PIXEL PERFECT ROSE

“THE

TITLE OF THEIR COMPANY , M3 NETWORKS, IS A REMIN DER OF THEIR FAMILYROOTS.”

In an industry with capitalism and marketing at the forefront, Michael and Stephanie Moore chose to put family first when opening their own business. The title of their company, M3 Networks, is a reminder of their family roots - representing them and their children’s names. The family’s commitment to one another has paralleled their work supporting small businesses in the community with IT and cybersecurity.

The values of faith, gratitude and service have remained core to the company since its inception in 2010. “We were both raised to listen, love and be grateful for what we have,” Michael says. “That’s important in life and in business. No matter what

challenges you face, if you say your prayers and remain grateful, it can get you through tough times.”

Both Stephanie and Michael grew up learning the importance of customer service. Stephanie’s work at Nordstrom taught her the significance of treating customers with care and delivering excellent service. Michael, having seen his father own a small business throughout his childhood, learned that personalization and treating patrons with care was essential to any operation. It was the shared belief of putting customer service first that motivated the couple to start M3 Networks, having witnessed the lack of a personal touch in the IT world that small businesses often need.

“When you work in IT, clients often come to you frustrated,” Michael says. “That’s why it’s so important to maintain a grateful mindset, even when things aren’t going perfectly. You have to treat problems like an opportunity to serve, and that’s something Stephanie and I focus on every day.”

While the couple serves their clients during the weekdays, they give back to the community in other ways as well. Stephanie and Michael, both native to DFW, are active volunteers at their church. The family is also deeply involved in their daughter’s school, Liberty Christian in Argyle. When they find themselves with free time, which seems to be rare, the Moores cheer on their local sports teams - especially the Dallas Stars.

Their love of the community runs deep and can be seen through their commitment to their

clients as well. Their hundreds of 5-star Google reviews are proof of their dedication to the customers and businesses.

As M3 continues to grow, the Moore’s continue to prioritize their core values: “putting God first, always being proactive and delivering excellent service,” Michael says. “Faith, family and community are the threads that hold [our] business together, making M3 Networks not just a company, but a reflection of who [we] are.”

The Versatility of THE PUMPKIN

REINVENT YOUR PUMPKINS IN ANY OF THESE UNIQUE WAYS

Pumpkins are a fall staple - it’s nearly undeniable. Whether it’s carving a jack-o-lantern with friends and family or cutting into a freshly-baked pumpkin pie, the iconic orange gourd serves as a reminder of countless precious memories this season. This year, get creative and celebrate the versatility of this seasonal classic by revitalizing the pumpkin in any of the following fashions.

NATURAL PLANTERS

If you don’t feel like carving an intricate design on the side of your pumpkin, choose to do the bare minimum and cut the top off. Remove the insides and you have the perfect vase for mums, sunflowers, dahlias

and more! Whether displayed inside or out, this simple decoration will impress your guests and neighbors. Save the seeds to bake for an added treat!

AT-HOME PUMPKIN SPICE

If you find yourself in line at the various coffee chains that sell seasonal creations this time of year, save some time and money by making the infamous pumpkin spice sauce at home. Find a recipe online, grab or make some pumpkin puree, and combine with other simple ingredients to satisfy your pumpkin spice craving. Add to a milkshake or an espresso martini for additional enjoyment.

PAINTING ON A NEW CANVAS

Though a majority of those celebrating the month choose to carve jack-o-lanterns,

you can also opt to personalize them without getting the slimy interior all over your table. You may have done so before, but this year, grab some paint and get creative! From complex ideas like your favorite cartoon character, sports team’s logo or intricate pattern to simple designs like candy corn, a ghost or a solid color - the creative decision is fully yours, no cutting required.

COUNTLESS COOKING

While pumpkin is notoriously delicious in baked goods like pie, bread, swiss rolls and more, its versatility expands to savory cooking as well. There are plenty of recipes online like pumpkin risotto, curry, gnocchi, chili, stir-fry and even quesadillas that complement the fall flavor. The options are endless, but for this author, pumpkin soup takes the cake.

A REMARKABLE HOPE

BRINGING HOPE AND GRATITUDE INTO THE DARKEST PLACES

Kristen Howell, CEO at the Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas, explains the Center’s work/ mission like this: Amid seeing “the very worst things [happen to] the most vulnerable people,” comes a sense of hope that a robust and effective response does exist and the system really can work on behalf of victims. “It’s remarkable,” Howell expresses. “I have the most gratitude for it. I’ve been in social services for 26 years and I’ve never seen a response as effective as this. It is truly the first-class, gold-standard response.”

The Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas facilitates the coming together of community volunteers and supporters, staff and multi-disciplinary team partners (MDTs) all on behalf of the protection of our kids. The acuity of cases worked through the Center is great. It not only takes more manpower, but more heart. Hope and gratitude envelop every part of the work. It has to, otherwise, it would surely fail.

The community volunteers and supporters work as external ambassadors for this incredible organization by serving at events, community fairs, in the Rainbow Room, with the Lotus League and as spokespeople in the community. While certain roles cannot be volunteer positions due to the sensitive nature of the work, this does not take away from the desire and need for community engagement at the Center. “Being a champion for the response and helping raise awareness, those are important things that take a tremendous amount of bandwidth from us,” says Howell. It allows the staff and MDTs to do what they do best in responding to a crime. Each piece of the puzzle is indispensable.

The organization and coordination present at the Center is remarkable. Certain crimes against children in Denton, Wise and Jack Counties must be coordinated at the Center. “The response is initiated out of this building,” says Howell. “It’s coordinated. All the parties know to go here [and] every time this is what you do. The investigators get to talk to each other here [to] coordinate their case in the most effective victim-centered way possible.”

But how does such county-wide coordination happen across so many fields? “It starts with an agreement that every child deserves a trauma-informed, child-friendly response,” Howell explains. Her voice is firm and tense with passion as she explains the agreement made with their partners that is signed at the chief level and begins the work of protecting our kids. “We all agree on that value. There’s tremendous power in that coordination.”

The coordination of all the MDTs spans 67 different agencies, including law enforcement and Department of Family and Protective Services investigators, district attorney’s office prosecutors, medical providers and child advocacy staff.

“It’s a calling for most of our people here,” says Howell. And how could it not be?

“We [all] believe in doing everything we can to help a child. That’s a culture that is very unique and is [of] the highest quality. We are surrounded by so many special, generous people.” This forging of such partnerships can’t help but produce hope. Howell explains, “It makes me hopeful about the world in general and our ability to commit to the services that we need to commit to. That’s really remarkable.”

And with hope comes a deep sense of appreciation for the hearts that support the Center — the hearts of the community, partners and staff, and us readers as we rally around them and choose to believe that goodness, hope and gratitude have remarkable power even in the darkest places.

THE CATTLE TRAIL TO CROSS TIMBERS

In reflection of the equine industry that makes North Texas home

Driving the cattle up the trails to North Texas in the 1800s, were the cowboys upon their horses. The horse industry blossomed from there. Cattle ranches began to multiply in the Denton area as far back as the 1850s. When the Civil War took its toll on both humans and horses, the numbers fell off abruptly. But the love for horses was instilled too deep in the north of our Lone Star State. As Denton and the surrounding areas grew through the 1900s, cattle ranches and the horse industry were even more firmly cemented into the culture and history of North Texas.

The ranching and farming industries were foundational in creating the towns of North Texas and forming the framework of how the areas were to exist and grow. In an article

published in 2023, the Denton Record-Chronicle wrote, “The city of Denton was incorporated in 1866 just as ranchers began to drive longhorn cattle to market along the Chisholm Trail… Historians believe the trail hosted the greatest migration of cattle in world history. Although it was only open from 1867 to 1885, it’s reported that more than 5 million longhorns and 1 million mustangs followed the trail.”

Today, the culture of Texas as a whole is closely tied to the animals that have driven, carried, guided, pulled, and given life to us over hundreds of years. The US is home to 6.66 million horses, with Texas having the largest population of 748,829, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Today. CONTINUED >

“Today, the culture of Texas as a whole is closely tied to the animals that have driven, carried, guided, pulled and given life to us over hundreds of years.”

North Texas is home to many iconic places and organizations dedicated to the equine industry from the American Quarter Horse Association in Amarillo to the first ranch of the infamous John S. Chisum in Denton County. The area of Denton County is home to one of the most important breeding and ranching areas in the US–let alone Texas–with more than 300 horse operations.

Here in Cross Timbers, fences roll by and stable doors stand ajar as you travel down FM 1171 or its many branching back roads. As new and modern as Flower Mound, Highland Village and our

surrounding areas may feel, the history of our community is deeply rooted in the rich history of Denton County as a whole. With all the thriving state-of-the-art educational initiatives and businesses cropping up, it’s easy to forget just how stunning our land, and the animals that brought us and keep us here, really are. In between the new developments is the smell of alfalfa hay, whirlwinds of “sandy loam” soil and the stunning creatures that make Denton County the home it is.

In 1881, Laura Irvine wrote the “Sketch of Denton County, Texas,” published in The American Sketch Book: An Historical and Home Magazine:

No where, perhaps, have the charms of nature been more prodigally lavished than in the lone star state; her mountains, with their bright aerial tints; her valleys teeming with fertility; her boundless plains, waving with spontaneous verdure, her rivers and creeks rolling in solemn silence; her trackless forests where vegetation puts forth all its magnificence; her skies kindling with magic of summer clouds, and glorious sunshine--no never need a Texan go beyond his own glorious country for natural and beautiful scenery. And in no county in the state, would you be more struck with the contribution of nature and her scenery than in many parts of Denton County.  Special thanks to our beautiful model Kylie Phillippi.

Stress-Free and Smoked Turkey

MARTY B'S TO-GO OFFERS THE PERFECT ALTERNA -

TIVE TO GRUELING HOURS IN THE KITCHEN THIS THANKSGIVING DAY

Instead of spending grueling hours in the kitchen this November 28th, invest your time in a way that shows more love than even warm yeast rolls can: by relaxing and savoring the moments with out-of-town family members and friends. And with a smoked turkey with all the fixin’s gracing your table, who could ask for more?

Marty B’s To-Go is dedicated to giving you the chance to simply be with those you love instead of laboring over steaming mashed potatoes and frozen turkeys for 6 hours. “We’ve gone to great measures to make it easy for people to plan their holiday meal,” says owner Marty Bryan. Simply pull-up, allow them to bring out your incredible array of prime rib, asparagus, meatballs and stuffing to your car, and try not to sneak bites on the drive home before you lay it out or reheat it later for the most stress-free and southern Thanksgiving meal.

Even if not for the main Thanksgiving meal, their online platform allows ordering to be done far in advance, giving Marty B’s the chance to supply you with sides of delicious tenderloin and warm mac n’ cheese to feed your host of family anytime during the holiday season. “We have amazing options for them to be able to take home, reheat and [be] pretty much taken care of for Thanksgiving,” Marty says, and the smell of smoked brisket seems to drift by from far off.
