Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader,
Have you ever seen Robin Hood: Men in Tights? It’s one of the mid-tier Mel Brooks movies: nowhere near as good as Young Frankenstein, but still a whole heckuva lot better than Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Seriously, how do you fumble that hard when you’ve got Leslie Nielson to play Dracula?
But I digress. I only bring up Robin Hood: Men in Tights because of one line in it that always stuck with me. It comes shortly after Robin Hood and his Merry Men meet Rabbi Tuckman (played by Brooks himself) for the first time. They ask him to join their band and share some of his wisdom, counsel, and perhaps some of his wine. The rabbi answers:
"Well, wisdom and counsel, that’s easy. But this is sacramental wine. It’s only used to bless things … wait a minute! There’s things here. There’s trees. There’s rocks. There’s birds. There’s squirrels. Come on! We’ll bless them all until we get fershnickered!"
Indiscriminate expression of gratitude … what a lovely notion! That’s all the reason I need to gush my appreciation toward the nonprofit organizations and public servants who serve Eden Prairie so selflessly. That’s also why I tip my hat to the HVAC technicians, certified public accountants, liquor distillers, and other professionals who make civilized life possible. It’s no coincidence that they’re all featured in this very thankful edition of Eden Prairie Lifestyle!
I’d once again like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest anyone might have in appearing on our magazine’s pages!
Best regards,

Goods. They’re called that because they are good for us. Appliances, bedding, clothing, dinnerware, electronics, furniture, and so on; if you’re surrounded by them, you have it good.
But you know what? The things you don’t need can be even better than goods. They become greats when you donate them to The PROP Shop of Eden Prairie.
“This has been a particularly rough year for local families,” said Cindy Eddy, executive director of The PROP Shop. “We’ve seen a 50 percent increase in clients, who
are mainly the working poor with many refugees in the mix.
“If you have pots, pans, coats, baby clothes, or any other necessities that you don’t necessarily need, then we already know someone who does. I cannot overstate the good you can do for good people by donating items to The PROP Shop.
“Eden Prairie residents are so kind and generous. Even so, there are many things they’ll (understandably) never think to donate. That’s why 94 percent of our operating costs go directly toward purchasing new items like socks, underwear, diapers and mattresses.
“You can do so much for our mission without donating used goods. If you make
a purchase at our retail center – a first-rate consignment shop, really, which offers so many interesting things for sale – then we’ll turn around and spend your money where it’s most needed. If you make a tax-deductible cash donation, all the better. And if you would like to buy something a member of our community specifically and urgently needs, like a baby food blender, or a pair of steel-toed work boots, then I encourage you to become one of our secret shoppers!”
Visit propshopep.org to learn more, or deliver the goods to The PROP Shop’s donation center at 15195 Martin Drive: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 3pm.
Multi-Restaurant Culinary Showdown Fortifies Spirit of Local Mercantilism
No other city has a greater sense of civic duty than Eden Prairie. When First Western Bank & Trust and the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce asked us to step up and support local businesses – by eatin’ burgers – we answered their call .
The Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle was waged between the best of the best in the Eden Prairie culinary scene. Each restaurant was challenged to create a unique, life-alteringly delicious burger, serve their entry throughout the month of September, and have patrons judge it according to four criteria: presentation, flavor, creativity, and customer service. Brazin Public House, CRAVE American Kitchen & Sushi Bar, Fat Pants Brewing Co., Kona Grill, My Burger, Old Chicago Pizza + Taproom, Pizza Karma, Redstone American Grill, and The Original Pancake House all rose to the occasion.
Who won the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle? The great city of Eden Prairie, of course. “According to data collected from the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce on October 7th, participating
restaurants served a grand total of 1,322 burgers during the battle,” reported Pat MulQueeny, president of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce. “By our measure, that amounts to a direct economic impact of $21,677.18.”
The Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle’s full impact can’t be measured in dollars and cents. The friendly competition raised public awareness of our town’s many superb dining options. It encouraged Eden Prairie residents to discover local restaurants they’d never considered before. It brought the entire burger-loving world together in closer harmony.
No, really – who won the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle? “We’re proud to announce that Brazin Public House won this year’s competition,” said Izzy Nelson, special projects and events intern with the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce. “Their ‘Wake Up Call’ will surely go down in history. But that’s not to diminish the other restaurants’ amazing efforts. We appreciate everyone who participated in this year’s battle, and can’t wait for what’s to come in 2025!”

PROP Food Shelf gives form to benevolence. What began as a church food drive 53 years ago has grown into a nonprofit serving thousands of families in need throughout Eden Prairie and Chanhassen.
“WHAT COULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN A LITTLE SOMETHING TO EAT?” – WINNIE THE POOH
Sadly, local families’ need for PROP continues to grow as well. “We served 5,100 clients this fiscal year – a 47 percent increase from two years ago,” said Jenifer Loon, executive director of PROP. “Between our Food Mart and home delivery service, we distributed 800,000 pounds of food last year alone.”
PROP battles more than just hunger. Their team members provide emergency funding that wards off evictions, nutrition and wellness counseling that saves lives, and employment and financial literacy counseling that fosters self-sufficiency. Truly, it’s a campaign against poverty.
And it’s powered by kindness. “There is no business element to PROP,” explained Jenifer. “We don’t sell anything. All of our revenue comes from grants and donations, and we receive roughly one-third of it during the months of November and December.”
Let your benevolence take form this holiday season by donating to PROP. Your tax-deductible contribution is the most direct investment in our community you could make. When you drop off nonperishables, produce or toiletries, they will be appreciated twice: once by PROP volunteers, and again by those who need them. And when you donate a gift card to a grocery store, gas station or Target, you have essentially told your neighbor “Here, let me get that for you.”

STILL THE BEST – JUST BETTER
My darling I Can't get enough of your love, babe
When Flying Dutchman Spirits first opened in 2015, Eden Prairie got its own liquor distillery. When Jonathon and Katie Nelson bought Flying
Dutchman features each Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10pm.
Flying Dutchman keeps all its windows: the ones that bathe the lounge in natural light, and the others that reveal the production floor in all its distillatious glory. The bar,
Dutchman last June, our town got its best cocktail lounge.
The Nelsons are content to let Flying Dutchman’s liquor remain in its present state of perfection. The same team of distillers will continue to craft it in small batches using the same premium ingredients and Hungarian-made still as before. Rather than fixing what ain’t broke, the Nelsons have refined the Flying Dutchman experience
The first improvement met my senses the instant I opened the door: a dulcet Barry White cover, courtesy of Geoff Jones and his band, playing on a proper stage (instead of a rug) and surrounded by slow-dancing couples. It’s a much more dignified and acoustically sound setup for the live music Flying
which showcases Mediterráneo Gin, Frontera Norte Blue Agave, Sailor’s Rantsoen Rum,
Nas-Drov-Via Vodka, and other miraculous restoratives in jewel-like glass bottles, has rightly stayed unchanged. But now there are multiple 85-inch TVs for game days and private events, new seating upholstered in satiny and altogether comfier leather, and an audio system for the patio –unarguably the Twin Cities' best spot for cocktails.
I brought my rowdiest crew (i.e. my wife and mom) to the patio that evening, which meant I could steal sips from more cocktails than I would ever order for only myself (post college, at least). My own Thai mule had a fiery kick thanks
to Flying Dutchman’s chili-infused vodka – not a five-alarmer, but just enough heat to make my taste buds loosen their collars. My mom’s Paloma was the cocktail equivalent of mariachi music. My wife ordered the cotton candy cosmo: one part Carrie Bradshaw, one part circus clown, served with a wisp of pink fluff to dissolve in the glass. Someone else (me) ordered a second, and they’re glad they did. The “Show Us Your Coconuts” is quite possibly the reason why rum was invented.
Only one thing on earth could have improved our experience. I am speaking of authentic New York-style pizza, of course, which Flying Dutchman serves four different ways. You haven’t lived until you’ve watched pepperoni glisten under Edison bulb lighting on a gorgeous summer evening.
“We fell in love with Flying Dutchman long before we bought it,” said Katie. “The spirits are delicious. The staff are amazing. The location is perfect – just off 212, but somehow still totally hidden away from the world. We’re adamant about keeping everything that already works so well. We’re also focused on elevating our experience into one that anyone can enjoy. Whether you’re planning a special date, a girl’s night out, or a truly memorable wedding reception, we’ll only be too happy to have you.”
“We’re excited for what’s to come, too,” added Jonathon. “Nothing’s set in stone just yet, but we’ll be rolling out a new bottle, label and logo sometime soon. We’ve been experimenting with new vodka flavors like huckleberry, and dill pickle. We’re also hoping to introduce an all-new product. I believe it’s finally time for Eden Prairie to become famous for its whiskey!”
Visit Flying Dutchman on Monday for $5 margaritas. Visit on Wednesday for cocktails and bingo. Visit fdspirits.com to see the live music and other special events they have lined up, or stop by 6801 Flying Cloud Drive to pick up a whole bottle of something beautiful. If Flying Dutchman were a lady, she would have given Mr. White plenty to sing about.

“At times, Eden Prairie makes me contemplate the chicken and the egg,” said Mayor Ron Case. “Did our community become great because it attracts quality residents? Or do we solely have quality residents to thank for our great community?
“If our own city government provides an answer to these questions, then it’s ‘Both.’ We owe the prestige of serving on City Council to the tremendous efforts of all those who served before us – but it’s largely because the Council attracts such amazing talent that Eden Prairie grows better and better.
“All conundrums aside, I couldn’t be more delighted by the way things are. Our town is locked in a virtuous cycle. It benefits everyone who lives and works here, and it’s why I feel the greatest imaginable sense of pride to hold this fine office.
“According to our own recent survey, our city government’s approval ratings are higher than 90 percent for all categories assessed by the community. Our scores are among the highest in the nation because we never lose sight of our first and only objective: to genuinely represent the good people who elected us.
“...AND
OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS WHO HAVE MADE
“Public safety, public works, parks, and public policy. These are the ‘Four Ps’ city government should exist for, and our sole focus.
“Public safety is our greatest priority, and accordingly receives the largest part of our budget. It’s not enough to promise our residents a safe community. We are obligated to create one, and so I thank our dutiful police officers and firefighters who have made peace of mind Eden Prairie’s status quo.
“Public works encompass the street, water, sewer and drainage infrastructure which makes civic life possible throughout our 36 square miles. I applaud all our Council Members’ careful planning and budgeting. But in truth, they only deserve a fraction of the credit.
Eden Prairie could not boast of having the clearest roads, the cleanest water, and the most sanitary living conditions without the superlative work of our Engineering, Environmental Services, Fleet Services, Streets Maintenance and Utilities divisions.
“Parks are an easily overlooked yet truly indispensable amenity. They keep residents healthy, entertained, and connected to nature – and Eden Prairie’s outdoors are far too beautiful to go uncelebrated. The next time you’re going on a scenic picnic, enjoying our town’s
Fourth of July fireworks, or watching your kids frolic in a local playground, join me in expressing gratitude to our Parks and Natural Resources division. The number and quality of our parks are second to none thanks to all their hard work.
“Finally, there is public policy: the rules and laws that help us all get along. We do have a healthy mix of political perspectives here in city hall, but they’re all in service of prioritizing what’s best for Eden Prairie. We’re compelled to make the most efficient use of our taxpayers’ money, create a citywide workplace where every public servant feels valued and respected, and give all due support to Eden Prairie Schools, the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce, and every other organization that serves our city so admirably.
“I owe my greatest thanks to the residents of Eden Prairie, who have placed their trust in me to represent their city and lead it to an exciting future. If I can lay claim to any achievements during my tenure as mayor, it is only because of the outstanding community I have been given the honor of serving. You haven’t just helped to build that community. You are that community. When future generations guide Eden Prairie to even greater heights, they will do so while standing on your shoulders.”
Eden Prairie resident Molly Menton honored for lifesaving actions, with Mayor Ron Case, Police Chief Matt Sackett, Duane Hookom, and Fire Chief Scott Gerber

Have you ever played SimCity? It’s a video game in which you manage a virtual municipality of your own creation. You can build roads. You can zone industrial districts. You can even raise taxes, which is fun when you’re the one doing it.
The greatest challenge to SimCity isn’t creating a clean, safe and beautiful city where residents are delighted to live and work. It’s resisting the urge to build a dozen nuclear power plants in the heart of downtown and then setting the annual budget for utilities to $5. More than one glowing craters named “Davetopia” are still saved on my hard drive.
Thank goodness the world provides responsible folks to manage real cities. Case in point: Rick Getschow, whom the great state of Wisconsin graciously provided to Eden Prairie.
“I was always drawn to government work, which drove me to earn my Master of Public Administration at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,” said Rick. “After interning under the city manager for West Allis, I was certain I’d found my calling. I was fortunate to become city manager of Hector, Minnesota in 1996. From there I continued on to Lauderdale, and then Hopkins, and then to Eden Prairie which I’ve had the honor of managing for almost 14 years.
“A city manager never lives the same day twice. On one day they might work on an economic development project. On the next, a community outreach program, or a park improvement project, or an initiative for the police and fire departments that could save lives. Better yet, a city manager gets to enjoy the fruits of their labor in real time. When they do their job right, the world around them grows a little bit better with each passing day.
"As chief executive of Eden Prairie, I have the privilege of working directly with all six city departments: Administration, Community Development, Fire, Parks and Recreation, Police, and Public Works. In a sense, I work shoulder to shoulder with more than 1,000 great people who make Eden Prairie the shining light of the Twin Cities metro.
“Our employees truly are the heart and soul of this city. Some perform services you might easily take for granted, although people would soon take notice
if our town’s three liquor stores suddenly became unstaffed, or our community center’s ice rink suddenly became un-zambonied. Others have enthusiastically volunteered to do harder jobs than I could ever imagine doing myself, like the members of our utility services who move mountains to make this little patch of Midwest habitable.
“Many of our city employees epitomize the virtue of selflessness. I’m talking about the brave men and women of the Eden Prairie Police Department and Eden Prairie Fire Department, whose heroism truly is awe inspiring. When I say I work ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with these public servants, I’m really doing them a disservice. Whether they’re rescuing ducklings from a storm drain – or rescuing a baby from the second story of a blazing townhome – they’re shouldering far greater burdens than a city manager would ever dare.
“So I thank them: each and every one of them, from the bottom of my heart, for creating the Eden Prairie I envision as part of my job. And as you give thanks for all the good in your life this month, I hope you’ll extend some of them to the recreation staff, the snowplow drivers, the street maintenance workers, the engineers, the building inspectors, and everyone else we owe our fantastic city to. You’ll feel the same sense of gratitude I’m blessed to feel every day.”

Your peace of mind demands a true financial expert. Someone who has been a certified public accountant since Ronald Reagan was in office. Someone who managed corporate audits for one-and-a-half decades. Someone who believes money is everything – but only if that money belongs to his client.
Your peace of mind is Fort Knox. Frank E. Nute, MS, CFE, CPA, CFF, CTRC, CGMA is on your side.
“I’ll let you in on an accountancy secret,” Frank confided. “Doing math? It’s not the best part of the job. The real reward is seeing my clients achieve their goals.
“Many of my clients are adamant about avoiding any problems with the IRS (which is always the advisable mindset to have). Some only find me after the IRS has found them, and depend on me to make the federal boogeyman go away quickly. Others are running businesses, and need the sound financial guidance a CFO would provide without paying a CFO’s salary in return. I’ve served them all with speed, precision and experience since founding my firm in 2001.”
“Over 11 million Americans currently owe money to the IRS. Tax, penalties and interest exceeded $158 million in 2023. And if the Inflation Reduction Act has achieved one thing, it was allowing the IRS to hire thousands of new staff members. They’re coming for us!
“If they come for you specifically, let’s give them a proper fight. I’m fully qualified to represent taxpayers before the IRS. I’m fluent in the rules and procedures for resolving tax debt, and I leverage them to my client’s advantage.
“Ignoring notices from the IRS and Minnesota Department of Revenue doesn’t make tax debt disappear, and assuming everyone settles their tax debt for pennies on the dollar is unrealistic. But by responding to notices, carefully analyzing cases, and evaluating settlement options, I negotiate the best possible solutions for my clients.”

“My fractional CFO services can help you increase sales, reduce operating expenses, and realize many other immediate paths toward financial success.”
“Here’s another disconcerting statistic: On average, employee theft costs U.S. businesses approximately $50 billion each year. The current economy is partly to blame, but so too is employer carelessness. Too many entrepreneurs jeopardize everything they’ve built by practically handing out opportunities to rob them.
“Don’t wait to discover your business’s weak points until they’ve already been exploited. I’ll identify every conceivable way your employees could commit fraud, and help you set up the controls you need to eliminate them. If your team members sign checks, use credit cards, or have access to cash, then I guarantee there are safer ways you can start doing business.”
“Most business owners share the same thing in common: They are all great at their respective businesses. But when it comes to cost management, cash flow management and growth strategy, just as many business owners are totally lost.
“If your small-to-medium business needs an experienced financial expert to handle balance sheets and income statements, then you don’t have to invest in a full-time CFO. My fractional CFO services can help you increase sales, reduce operating expenses, and realize many other immediate paths toward financial success.”

As a fanatical Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader, there is much you could teach the youth of Eden Prairie. No child under your tutelage would ever forget where to find our town’s best grocery store, barbecue restaurant, or electric bicycle dealership.
Sadly, your present obligations prevent you from donating your time and expertise at local schools. You have a job and/or fascinating hobbies to attend to. You may even have kids of your own, and still have to teach them a thing or two before sending them off into the fray.
Take heart. Thanks to the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS), it’s easy to do right by tomorrow’s leaders. Simply make a donation to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and let their team tend to the rest.
“When our grants and recognition committee reviews an application, we’re very intentional about reaching students of all ages,” said Liz Dayton, educator and member of FEPS’ board of directors. “We fund the ‘READY! for Kindergarten’ program which helps parents and caregivers prepare their children for what awaits after Little Eagles Preschool. We provide funding to the TASSEL Transition program, which prepares students between the ages of 18 and 22 to achieve independence. Ultimately, if there’s an opportunity to supplement the great work Eden Prairie Schools already does, we’re actively searching for it.”
“We have awarded over $1.7 million to innovative programs since our foundation in 1998,” said Dr. Lisa Sisinni, executive director of FEPS. “Our donors’ generosity made it possible to award our largest grant to date earlier this year: $100,000 for
Eden Prairie High School’s new Emerging Technologies Lab, where students will experiment with virtual reality, robotics, 3D printing, and other things that only existed on Star Trek back when we were all growing up.
“We recently provided VR goggles to the elementary schools as well. I got to witness a geography lesson that had children strolling down the Champs-Élysées, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, and soaring high above the Grand Canyon. With all the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ I heard that day, I may as well have been watching fireworks.”
“Many of my daughter’s high school classmates are looking forward to careers in nursing,” said Liz. “They especially benefited from the $4,500 grant FEPS awarded to Eden Prairie High School for its new Medical Terminology and Health Careers course. It enabled health and science instructors Andrea Benzine and Kjersten Welter to cover the costs of stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and other instruments aspiring medical professionals need to familiarize themselves with.”
FEPS awards many grants for $5,000 or less. When Little Eagles lead teacher Jillian Lorang wanted to purchase ‘Hoot Owl Hoot!,’ ‘The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel,’ and other cooperative board games, FEPS was there. When Cedar Ridge Elementary special education teachers Kim Kelley and Kathy Otos sought funding for a sensory motor area, FEPS was there. And when Eden Prairie High School physics instructor Dr. Michael Nehring requested digital sensors that engineering students could use to learn predictive analysis, FEPS was only too happy to pick up the tab.
“We don’t award grants indiscriminately,” Liz continued. “Sometimes the need for educational materials or a new program is clear as day – but funding for it is available from other avenues. That’s why we frequently direct district administrators’ attention to places where public funding can do the most good for our students.”
“Our grants aren’t exclusively reserved for teachers, either,” said Lisa. “We recently provided MoveFwd with funding for youth counselors in our district. We also help the Eden Prairie Noon Rotary Club continue one of our town’s most cherished traditions: My Book Day, which provides a hardbound book to each first grader in the city. Ask any Eden Prairie high schooler if they still have their book. Odds are they do!”
FEPS is kicking off their 2024 Annual Appeal to coincide with Minnesota’s Give to the Max campaign on November 21st. Last year’s outpouring of generosity equaled $54,360. Let’s exceed that by December 31st. If you’re looking for the best way to make an immediate and resonating impact in our community (and maybe deduct some choice qualified contributions while you’re at it), then you can learn what to do at foundationforepschools.org
FEPS’ mission is to support and enhance the legacy of excellence in Eden Prairie Public Schools. Through your generosity, they:
• Fund grants that impact students
• Manage college scholarships awarded to Eden Prairie High School students
• Honor individuals who make a difference

“We started Women Ignite with a simple goal: to host an annual event that would bring female entrepreneurs closer together, and introduce them to community resources that can help grow their businesses,” said Amalia Moreno-Damgaard, founder of Eden Prairie’s own Amalia Latin Gourmet and immediate past president of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Minnesota Chapter.
“The first Women Ignite, which NAWBO held in partnership with the Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) last year, was an enormous success with around 300 registrations. This year’s Women Ignite, which added the Women's Business Development Center (WBDC) and Business Bridge Greater MSP as partners, gained 450 registrations. It’s a heartening sign of great things to come for women and diversity in business.
“This year’s Women Ignite welcomed guest speaker Senator Amy Klobuchar, as well as featured guest Lili Hall: founder, CEO and president of KNOCK, inc. As the owner of a multicultural brand strategy and design firm that has scaled globally – and someone who recently overcame breast cancer – Lili provided just the inspiration attendees needed to get out there and continue shaping the world in their image.”

“We’re honored to have welcomed representatives of several of our area’s largest employers, including 3M, Chase Bank, J.P. Morgan, Medtronic, Target, and United Healthcare Group,” said Dorothy Bridges, CEO and president of MEDA. “Their valuable insights helped attendees recognize opportunities to think bigger, scale faster, and grow their solo enterprises into influential employer-based businesses.
“Fostering deeper connections between large corporations and minority-owned businesses has been a large part of MEDA’s focus since our foundation in 1971. Events like Women Ignite help BIPOC entrepreneurs learn how to become contract ready, and fully leverage local connections to the national market.
“Take Kobi Co., for example, which was founded by mother and daughter Tasha Harris and Kobi Gregory during the peak of Covid-19. It started out as small as you could imagine: a 19-year-old woman making scented soy-based candles in her mom’s basement as a means of coping with anxiety and depression. But soon, Kobi saw further. She married her low-tech product with the high-tech industry by adding QR codes to her candles. “With MEDA’s support, Kobi Co. is now in serious talks with a major national retail chain. For a business to have grown so much, so quickly is a real testament to the power of women working together.”
“The Twin Cities have grown increasingly diverse over the 22 years I’ve lived here,” added Amalia. “Witnessing that explosion of vibrancy firsthand has been invigorating – but it’s not enough to simply see different faces on the street. I thank MEDA, WBDC, Business Bridge, and every other organization that supports NAWBO’s goal of creating a business community that mirrors our actual community. It’s diversity in practice, instead of merely in theory: the bright future our country is destined for.”
This year’s Women Ignite was held on August 27th at the MacMillan Conference Center. Take heart if you missed it, because its third iteration is sure to come in 2025. OVER 3,800 DOGS SAVED SINCE 2017
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Her name was Nisswa. She was a “neighborhood dog” – a gentle little stray with a red coat, white paws, and half-cocked ears, who would shrink away whenever a stranger got near her.
To Nisswa, people were nothing but strangers. Fate had deposited her in rural Alabama, where her sole human interaction was quite possibly limited to being dumped by the side of a road as a puppy.
The neighborhood Nisswa lived in was ambivalent toward her. Residents idly looked on as she grew visibly sicker, and her belly bulged downward with puppies. It wasn’t until she apparently vanished that someone thought to contact Heart of Alabama Save, Rescue, Adopt (HASRA).
By sheer, dumb luck, a HASRA volunteer discovered Nisswa while touring a house for sale. There she was: denned up in the hellacious swelter of an old shed, barely managing to nurse seven famished weekold puppies.
Nisswa’s luck held out. HASRA is a no-kill shelter, which sends many of the dogs it rescues to the loving embrace of Savage, Minnesota. Nisswa and her litter arrived at the Bakken household in July of 2019.
“She was such a good girl,” reminisced Diana Bakken, founder and executive director of Warrior Dog Rescue.
“So calm, so grateful, and so eager to be loved even though she must have been racked with pain from heartworm, ehrlichiosis, and kidney failure.
“The way Nisswa tenderly cared for her puppies and taught them how to behave stole our hearts. Her passing, which came one month after she entered our lives, broke us. But we continued raising her puppies, and
placed all of them in wonderful forever homes, and still keep her memory with us each day.
“Nisswa isn’t just the caped dog in our logo. She’s the angel who sits on my shoulder and urges me to keep going.
“It was my daughter Laura who urged me to get started. She wanted to foster dogs so badly during high school – partly because of social media, and partly because she had inherited my own mother’s kindness toward animals. My husband Kevin and I said ‘Let’s go for it,’ and we were soon fostering for a local rescue.
“Our initial experience fostering dogs was wonderful. But the rescue we fostered for? Well, let’s just say it left a lot to be desired. It wasn’t long until we decided to build a better rescue: where good ethics come first, placement in loving forever homes is expedited, and volunteers receive all the support, high-quality equipment, and access to the excellent veterinary care they need to truly take care of their charges. Our goal came to fruition with the establishment of Warrior Dog Rescue on October 4th, 2017.
“Warrior Dog Rescue represents the collective will of many fantastic people. Our partners at HASRA work tirelessly to save dogs from an area where abuse and abandonment are so commonplace that they aren’t prosecuted as crimes. Our board members Marcy Anagnostou, Kori Ennen, Leslie Kuehn and Wendy Laramy are every bit as passionate about giving dogs second chances as I am. I’m also grateful for all of our coordinators, foster mentors, managers, supervisors and trainers who give their time and their energy so selflessly.

“Above all else, I thank the volunteers, foster families and donors who keep Warrior Dog Rescue alive. Anyone who would like to play with adorable puppies is welcome to apply to volunteer at ‘The Dog House,’ our location in Savage where we quarter and rehabilitate rescues. If you would like to open your home and your heart to a dog, then I encourage you to apply to foster today. And if
you donate any amount of money to our cause, it will go directly toward saving the sweetest and most innocent lives in the world.”
Do it for Nisswa. Visit warriordogrescue.com to learn how you can support Warrior Dog Rescue, as well as see their upcoming adoption events (many of which are held at Eden Prairie Center)!

KEEPING THE TWIN CITIES COMFORTABLE SINCE 1930
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK
'Cause you're hot then you're cold – Katy Perry (possibly in reference to the Midwest)
The troops. The first responders. The teachers. Anyone who drives an ice cream truck through your neighborhood. These are all great heroes. But if you live in the Midwest – where it can be hot as Hades and cold as Pluto over the span of a couple of weeks – then you might want to add HVAC technicians to your list of everyday heroes.
Few Twin Cities HVAC companies offer the depth of experience that Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brings. Founded in 1930, it has stood the test of time through economic challenges and the unpredictable Midwestern climate. Tony Ferrara started the business, which has since grown into a third-generation, woman-owned company under the leadership of his granddaughter, Claire Ferrara.
“I wasn’t blessed with an opportunity to get to really know my grandpa,” said Claire. “He passed when I was very young. Even so, I often ask myself what grandpa would think about the choices I’m making. That’s the mindset that sets a legacy business apart from a startup or franchise. You’re not just making business decisions. You’re trying to make your ancestors proud."
The team at Standard Heating & Air Conditioning shares these values, striving to represent a name the community can trust for reliable heating and cooling solutions. Their commitment to service goes beyond comfort. They are also creating opportunities for employees to thrive in rewarding careers, and giving back to the community in meaningful ways.

“You’re not just making business decisions. You’re trying to make your ancestors proud.”
“Our commitment to service, integrity, character and expertise does much more than keep people comfortable,” said Claire. “It creates a work environment where our team members can foster rewarding careers in an important trade. It has also built a company that can afford to give back. We make monetary donations in support of our community. We mentor up-and-coming technicians at local trade schools. We provide furnaces and air conditioners to families in need, free of charge. And thanks to our ‘5 for $25 Drive,’ we donate $25 to any charity of our client’s choosing so long as they take five minutes to leave a review of our services. We have donated over $150,000 since the program’s inception!”
