Cheers to Five Years!
I cannot believe it's been five years since Byron and I decided to launch Fayette County Lifestyle. I remember how excited and relieved we were in November of 2019 that our first issue was landing in mailboxes across the county. Five years is 60 issues, 60 Lifestyle Letters, about 350 stories, roughly 250 Business Monthly announcements, and around 600 City Scene photos of people in the community doing enjoyable and great things!
Benjamin Franklin wrote, “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading or do things worth the writing.”
Many in our community have done things worth writing about, my only hope is that for the past five years, we have written well about things worth reading. It has been one of my great joys to know that you, our thousands of readers, have learned about local business owners, community leaders, and neighbors, just like you and me. We are honored to have promoted the beautiful brands of our advertising partners. We could not exist without them! There is power in the written word and there is power when a business's brand appears in print. You can hold it in your hands and run your fingers over the pages. There is a reaction that takes place and providing that has been a gift.
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that print is not dead. We believe it is alive and well and are so very grateful that you read our pages. We are just getting started.
Thankful.
Honored.
Grateful.
Hopeful. Praiseful.
Humbled.
Overjoyed.
These are the feelings I have in my heart right now, and I pray the same for you as we look forward to the holidays. Here's to many more years of bringing good, fun, interesting news about our community to our community!
Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving,
November 2024

LOCAL MINISTRY HELPS MEN BREAK FREE FROM ADDICTION WHILE SERVING THE COMMUNITY.
A BETTER WAY
Inside pristine white buildings on a perfectly manicured campus, business owners, former prisoners, and educated and uneducated men live and work. Brought together by their need to escape addictions, all are seeking A Better Way.

“THIS PLACE SAVED MY LIFE AND INTRODUCED ME TO THE LOVE OF CHRIST.”
“Addiction is not prejudice to any certain person,” A Better Way Ministries Program Director Doug Campbell said, “It affects everyone.” Campbell, who graduated from the program himself, after living an out-of-control life of drugs and alcohol, said, “Anyone can get clean and sober but staying clean and sober is where it’s at,” adding that he experienced several relapses before achieving sobriety in 2014.
Before he found A Better Way, Andrew Perez, 36, would wake at 6 a.m. and have breakfast with his family after self-medicating with illegal drugs. Andrew was a functioning addict who managed to keep his drug use a secret from others but he knew he desperately needed help.
When the Newnan tornado destroyed his home, Perez knew it was
church with Christian parents and grandparents. As a teen, he struggled with self-acceptance and started experimenting with drugs. “It alters your state of thinking. Nothing in this world matters, as sad as that sounds.” Owens, who has two sons, 14 and 9, said, “I got tired of living like that. My children didn’t want to be around me.” After completing a different program, Owens relapsed and wound up in jail. His church offered to pay his tuition for A Better Way. In the program for more than seven months, he said, “I want to be a better father.” Knowing what his kids have experienced, he wants to start a ministry for the children of alcoholics and addicts.
John Barrow founded A Better Way Ministries in 2005, and more than 2,500 men from Georgia and across the country have participated in

the program. No one is turned away for inability to pay. “We’re faith-based, and we believe that men’s problems are sinbased,” Campbell said. “The right relationship with Jesus Christ is the primary solution to man’s problem.”
Funding comes from individuals, churches, and corporate donations. Program participants also support the ministry through their work with A Better Way Moving, a thrift store, and other endeavors including handcrafting tables for Chick-fil-A restaurants that are shipped all over the country. The men also give back to the community by participating in disaster relief and providing food and other donations to those in need.
While helping the men of Better Way makes the community a better place, Campbell said it’s also what Christ would have us do. “They are someone’s son, someone’s nephew, someone’s brother.”

TRADITIONAL WITH A TWIST
Interior designer, Kristen Wilson, creates comfy, classic spaces with an eclectic kick.
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, and interior designer Kristen Wilson, owner of Studio Louise, aims to create beauty in her client's eyes. Her eclectic style with a traditional twist results in designs that are a little funkier and a lot more colorful, with a hat-tip to classic pieces and antiques. “I like color,” Kristen said, “but with a nod back to traditional styles.”
Kristen’s work includes both residential and commercial projects, with a focus on new construction and remodels. She says “I like incorporating clients' personalities into the space. It makes it feel a little more special.” Kristen loves the flexibility of new construction as it permits unlimited creativity. It allows an exhaustive approach to her design because the home acts as a blank canvas ready for her to paint the story of her clients. “You’re not limited and can choose every little detail, whereas, with a remodel, you’re still bound by what’s already there.” That being said, she enjoys the challenges a remodel can present as the limitations often test her abilities and expand her creative mindset to both conform to and elaborate on the space.
When she first entered the interior design world, Kristen wanted her trademark to be funky, loud, colorful, and bold. However, as she matured, she gravitated toward
more traditional and tailored interior styles. By pulling in more traditional design elements and principles, she manages to fuse the funky with the tailored in perfect harmony to complement the spaces she designs. Her inspiration comes from traveling, visiting different restaurants, and observing what other designers are doing. As a student of her craft, Kristen is constantly watching how people interact with the designed spaces around them. This flow of different sights and places, rather than one particular fashion, drives her creative mind.
She aspires to create an emotional relationship between her clients and the space they interact with. The intended impact the space has on the clients differs with each room due to the different approaches she takes. “Ultimately,” she said, “I like to listen to what clients want and their concerns, but also push them to step out of their comfort zone.” With the intent not to be too predictable, Kristen encourages clients to choose and embrace pieces they might not have selected themselves, with the knowledge and confidence in her that when all the pieces come together, the space will feel like theirs.
While every project she has undertaken over the years has become her favorite, due to the time, effort, and energy invested, her personal favorite spaces to design are living and family rooms. From upholstery to art, “there’s a lot of room for different styles of pieces to be included,” she said. Her favorite color to incorporate in her designs is chartreuse. “I feel like that color is a little chameleon,” Kristen said. “It is definitely my go-to design color to add a splash of funkiness to the space.”
The name of her business has special meaning to Kristen. “Louise is my daughter’s middle name. I felt it sounded unique and I wanted to give her a nod. She’s my favorite thing in the world.”
For those seeking a space incorporating a splash of funky with a traditional twist, visit her website, studiolouiseid.com, to view her portfolio and schedule an initial consultation.
Kristen puts the finishing touch on this calming, timeless, never-want-to-leave, living room design.
Echoes of Yesterday
LOCAL LEGENDS LEND THEIR VOICES TO WHAT FAYETTEVILLE ONCE WAS.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAM REID
Fayetteville, Georgia is fortunate to have Derryll Anderson and Charlie Cave as longtime residents. In their part-time roles at Fayetteville City Hall, Derryll and Charlie are more than friendly faces – they offer a deep sense of local pride and connection. Whether greeting visitors, answering phones, or helping during local events, they embody the spirit of Fayetteville. “This is my happy place,” says Derryll, reflecting on the strong bond she shares with the town she’s called home her entire life.
Derryll feels grateful and blessed at age 75. Her father built their family home from scratch using both purchased and handmade bricks. The house still stands today, a testament to her family’s legacy. Her mother, one of the first teachers at Peachtree Elementary, is honored with a photograph in the Fayetteville City Hall. Born in December 1948, Derryll has witnessed the city’s evolution over the decades, from dirt roads to today’s bustling streets.
Charlie, now 84, moved to Fayetteville with his wife after his military service and has watched the town change over time. Reflecting on his early days in Fayetteville, he recalls, “There was just one road in and one road out.” Charlie’s wife sang commercials for Coca-Cola, Ford, Big Bear, and other big names. “She was also the backup singer for one of the country music singers. She was always in high demand.” Charlie’s wife passed away after 50 years of marriage.
For both Derryll and Charlie, life in Fayetteville was quite different. Derryll recalls dirt streets, making mud pies with her sisters, and a rural setting where gardens flourished and cotton fields stretched across what is now developed land. Charlie, on the other hand, remembers a quiet town that grew slowly, where
community involvement was key, and where he served with local groups like Kiwanis.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was pivotal in Fayetteville’s growth, sparking new jobs and opportunities that transformed the area. “The airport put us on the map,” Derryll notes, as schools expanded and the community prospered, helping to shape Fayetteville into the town she and Charlie love.
While Charlie’s journey to Fayetteville came later, he quickly saw how much the town had to offer. The development of Peachtree City and the expansion of the local airport led to a boom in population and diversity, especially among airline employees. Charlie benefited from a 31-year career with Delta, followed by 15 years in banking, several years at The Bear Radio, a job at Fayette County News, substitute teaching at the high school level, and part-time work at Minuteman Press.
Reflecting on Fayetteville in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Charlie says, “Main Street was sleepy,” with businesses like Big Star serving as the equivalent of today’s Kroger, and the arrival of Publix contributing to a shift in the town’s growth. Who knew Fayetteville had a drive-in movie theater? Derryll remembers, “The 85 Drive-In Theatre was the place to be on weekends. It was across from where the pavilion is now, and the pavilion used to be a pecan and bean farm.”
Derryll and Charlie both agree that despite the changes, Fayetteville has kept its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. “Visiting with friends was what we did for enjoyment.” Charlie continues, “People stopped to help strangers, say hello to neighbors, and care for one another.” “We’re fortunate to live here,” Derryll adds. “It’s a safe place where families, single people, and everyone in between can feel at home.”

the canned camp, you may surprise yourself that you ever thought canned was the easiest route to your table! This sauce is a great addition to your poultry or pork when fresh cranberries are in season, but frozen cranberries can certainly be used in a pinch.
