ROAD TRIP
A Local Outdoor Adventure RE-DISCOVERING HENRY HORTON STATE PARK AND ALL IT HAS TO OFFER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SORREL DUGAN
12
Spring Hill Style | October 2020
I LOVE CAMPING. I love everything about it, from unrolling that musty matted mess of nylon and net to the reward of sitting next to the fire picking sticky marshmallow mush off my mouth. This time of year, I am especially drawn to the warm colors of our cooling season. If you are looking for a place to unwind and unplug, Henry Horton State Park is less than 30 minutes away! Located near Chapel Hill, the park was built in the 1960’s and named after the former governor of Tennessee who once owned the land. Aesthetically outlined by the Duck River, the park is known locally for its miles of scenic trails which weave their way across pastures and through woods beckoning adventurers of all ages. There are 4 different trails, all relatively flat, on which you might discover interesting habitats like cedar glades, hickory woods and an old mill community. For those who want to spend the weekend sleeping under the stars, there are over 75 campsites from backcountry primitive to RV suitable sites with electricity and water. All sites have tables, grills and fire rings. If you would rather a more structured abode, the park also offers 7 rustic cabins and the Horton Park Inn, featuring 65 rooms and 4 suites. Right across the street sits one of the finest golf courses in the state; the Buford Ellington Golf Course. This course is a part of the Tennessee Golf Trail, and one of only 3 courses architected by the renowned Jack Nicklaus. Tee times are available 7 days a week. If all of this has made you hungry, you’re in luck! The park is home to the award-winning Governor’s Table Restaurant and The Tipped Canoe lounge. “The Governor’s Table Restaurant is the first state park restaurant in the country to achieve Eat REAL certification for sustainable and healthy food service. Eat Real is a nationally recognized standard for foodservice operations that focuses on nutrition and sustainability.” -tnstateparks.com. All food is made with fresh ingredients, including herbs and produce from their onsite garden and they also carry a variety of local spirits, wines and beers as well. You’ll want to commemorate your new memories by walking over to the cute little gift shops to find that perfect Tennessee treasure! CONTINUED >

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)
Meet the Stevenson family: Ross & Jenny, Justus (age 13), Matthias (age 11) and Silas (age 7). This “all-boy” Spring Hill family are experts at discovering ways to incorporate physical activity in an outdoor setting. While they spend their summers adventuring across the country in the RV, the Stevensons have made Henry Horton their local go-to for day trips to the park. Justus says he loves to see the wildlife while Silas looks forward to jumping the rocks and kayaking. Matthias sums it up by sharing that he enjoys playing games together and the whole experience in general! Jenny Stevenson offers a word of encouragement for families of all kinds, “State Parks have so much to offer! You can just sit and enjoy the scenery or hike, bike, kayak, play frisbee golf, play in water, etc. There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy! The quality time that we get as a family makes each state park trip special!” The tranquility of the Duck River provides visitors with swimming, fishing and kayaking. Land activities include disc golf, baseball, basketball, tennis and volleyball. Dozens of picture perfect picnic sites and pavilions are scattered across the park for your pleasure. One final hidden jewel that Henry Horton hosts, is a seasonal Farmer’s Market. You won’t believe it unless you go! Every Saturday morning from June to October, dozens of tents pop up along the main road creatively displaying goods and wares from fresh fruits and veggies to unique hand-made gifts and treats. Check out their facebook page for updates and live-stream from past events.

DENTS CAN DISCUSS THE ABUNDANT MERITS AND ATTRIBUTES OF OUR COUNTY AND ITS MUNICIPALITIES AT GREAT LENGTH: AFFORDABLE HOUSING, EXCELLENT SCHOOLS, CONVENIENCE TO NASHVILLE FOR WORK AND PLAY, MYRIAD CHOICES FOR SHOPPING AND DINING, AND OVERALL A GREAT QUALITY OF LIFE. What is not widely talked about, and may not be known about, is food insecurity in Williamson County. Food insecurity is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as an occasional lack of access to enough food for all members of a household and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. According to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, more than 13,000 adults in Williamson County were food insecure in 2018, while 13.7% of Williamson County children under the age of 18 experienced food insecurity. Compounding those difficulties, approximately 65% of Williamson County residents are ineligible for government assistance because their reported income places them above the qualifying threshold. The figures for Maury County adults were even higher, with an 11.4% food insecurity rate among residents over the age of 18. Furthermore, the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have created even more hardships for people who may currently be underemployed, have been furloughed from work, or have lost their jobs altogether.

Setting the Scene EASY TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL TABLESCAPE
IT SEEMS LIKE THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, SO MANY PEOPLE CAN’T WAIT TO BREAK OUT THEIR PUMPKINS, SCARVES, AND SPICED LATTES. I am with you. In my opinion, Fall is the start of the hosting season. This is where things kick-off. What better way to do so than with an amazing tablescape. The right tablescape can set the tone for your guests. It invites them in and makes them feel welcome. If you want to be more laid back, choose something simple and fun. If you are hosting a black-tie dinner, you can go more upscale and classy. Here is the good news... you get to set the tone. Styling a tablescape is a great way to show some personality. There are so many unique items available that fit any style or budget. Not to mention, inspiration everywhere you look. Here’s a little secret, each item on this table was under $5. Beauty doesn’t have to be expensive, whatever your budget, I challenge you to create your very own tablescape and be sure to tag @springhillstylemagazine on Instagram so we can get inspired by yours!

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.
+
Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.
+
Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!
