There’s something beautiful and satisfying about bringing a piece of furniture back to life and giving it new purpose. A little more than eight years ago, Elizabeth Olsen took on the project of updating and

renovating her old family farmhouse that she and her twin sister, Margaret Nash, grew up in. Projects started out small, fixing up old pieces of furniture and the like, but when she put them out in the marketplace, the interest and demand for her up-cycled projects came flooding in. Surprised and excited by the success, Margaret and Elizabeth realized there was a strong demand and growing market for their sense of style. Fancy Farmgirls was born.
(Above) Vintage dresser before: It's OK if the furniture looks tired and worn when you get it. You're going to be overhauling its exterior! Paint can change anything. Don't be afraid to use color!
Liz and Marg grew up as farm kids with seven other siblings. Their mother loved to decorate their home and had to do it on a thrift-store budget. The twins grew up knowing no other way to decorate, and for them it was normal to take something someone else had discarded and make it new and desirable again. “I love that the farmhouse style can fit Antique hutch before: Go for the shape of a piece. any budget—finding the ugly and making it pretty,” Margret says. It’s easier than you think to give a space a Fancy Farmgirl feel. Both Margret and Elizabeth say paint is the best way to start. It’s inexpensive and can completely transform any space. “Keep it light and bright, then layer with textures and metals and ground it with a bigger piece,” Elizabeth says. Look for a piece that has some history to it or a story behind it. That adds character and authenticity to the look. At the end of the day, the farmhouse style is a calm decor, so don’t feel you have to overdo it. Looking to make over your home? Don’t start too big; it’s OK to try it out on a small scale first. Grab a gallon of paint, some peel-and-stick vinyl flooring and you’ve completely transformed a space for a doable price (their Instagram account and blog have a lot of good tips and information on how to do this). Want more of the Fancy Farmgirls? They have Barn Sales twice a year (fall and spring). Their Spring Barn Sale is happening May 17-18 in Meridian. Check their Instagram account or blog closer to the date for times and specific location. There will be local vendors from around the area and neighboring states. The twins build a curated show, which means you will have plenty of relevant and great finds to look through to make your space farmhouse perfection. With their business growing (design services, working with local home builders, etc), they will eventually build an event barn for future Barn Sales. You can follow them on Instagram @FancyFarmgirls, their blog at FancyFarmgirls.com and Facebook at Fancy Farmgirls Sale.

You don’t have to buy all new items to get a farmhouse feel. Use what you have and change it. Start with a piece that has a story behind it. Update it with a fresh coat of paint or new hardware. Moving the item from one space to another can give a completely different feel as well.

Culinary Collective Network BRINGING TOGETHER LOCAL FARMS, BREWERIES, WINERIES AND RESTAURANTS TO PROVIDE FARM-TO-TABLE DINING EXPERIENCES
ARTICLE SHELLY WEST

Meridian Lifestyle | April 2019
THE BOISE FOOD SCENE IS GROWING, AND WITH
“LOCAL GROWERS AND MAKERS ALIKE ARE SUPPORTED BY THE NETWORK IN MANY WAYS.”
THAT, A NEED HAS BEEN CREATED FOR A HUB THAT OFFERS SUPPORT TO ALL THINGS FOOD AND DRINK. Founder of the Culinary Collective Network Kris Ott identified that need and decided to fill it. In fall 2018, he launched the network that serves as a resource that brings together the community of local farms, breweries, wineries and restaurants for farm-to-table dining experiences, farmers markets, culinary events and much more. “After 25 years in food service and as an executive chef, I found that I wanted more time with my family while digging my hands deeper into the food industry here in Boise to help elevate the community,” Kris says. “Local growers and makers alike are supported by the network in many ways. We feature our members with a complete listing of their services or offerings in a web-page format. We also include a blog post for each that highlights what is happening locally to keep the connection between the public and the businesses we are working with. The blog posts feature our members in a way that introduces their goods or services while serving as a valuable resource to the public and other businesses looking to support the local community.” Following that spirit of supporting local farmers, Kris has another exciting project he recently introduced: Late Harvest Premium, a program where local farmers donate produce to develop and create smallbatch products, eliminating late-season waste. The end product is then sold in a variety of sales streams and will benefit charity as well as the farmers and creators who contributed. This project is due to expand this year with several local farms already expressing their desire to participate. The Culinary Collective Network is much more than a resource just for the industry, though; their website serves as a valuable resource for the public. The events page is updated on a regular basis, and more collaborative efforts are in the planning process. Be sure to bookmark the page at CulinaryCollectiveNetwork.com. As the network grows, so too will the offerings as currently they have upcoming supper clubs, classes or training, job postings and industry news that affects the community.

Panfish like bluegill and crappie provide fast action. They can be easy to catch in the spring when they’re schooled near shore to spawn.
Many Treasure Valley ponds have largemouth bass, and they will challenge your angling skills.
I learned some key things along the way. Not all ponds are created equal, and following the well-worn path to the beat-down spot along the shoreline is not the road to angling success. I fished both obvious ponds, such as those in parks, and secluded little ponds tucked away in harder-to-reach spots. I also learned that launching a float tube, or a kayak, gets you to spots that shoreside anglers can’t reach, and the minor embarrassment of using one in a pond that you can almost cast across is quickly overcome when you hook your first fish. I also discovered that if I apply the same stubborn persistence to a pond that I apply to rivers, lakes and reservoirs, I can not

Remove fabric from baking sheet (careful, it’s hot!) and allow wax to harden and cool. FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry. WHAT DEFINING MOMENTS SET YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH?
My faith journey began at a young age, which gives me tremendous inspiration, guidance and strength in the work I do today. As a successful

value of self-reliance, hard work and risk-taking, all that I am involved with. My upbringing also taught me to overcome obstacles. The bottom line for me isn’t profit-centered but rather peoplecentered and making a tangible difference with my time on this earth.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Two things motivate me primarily. One, God’s extraordinary and unchanging love for humanity. The other is when one of our Stanton Moms comes into the clinic holding her baby with tears in her eyes and says, “Thank you… I couldn’t have done this without you. My child has changed my life. You gave me hope.” For me, helping women find their strength motivates me and confirms my purpose.
WHAT ARE YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? I never stop learning, growing and trying to improve myself. I seek wise input and surround myself with successful people. I’m not afraid to
I can sum up my thoughts on success in this quote by Mother Teresa: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” I’d like to believe that by imparting ripples of love, hope, compassion and courage in the lives of people, I can help make the world a better place.
make the hard and difficult decisions. I drive my team and myself forward toward productive outcomes. I take time for adventure and enjoy life with friends and family. However, I never take my eye off the ball. There is critical life-saving and hope-filled work that must be done. And as Joan of Arc said, “I am not afraid. I was born to do this.” StantonInternational.org

BROOKE “When two of my friends invited me to join them for an Orangetheory workout two years ago, I had no idea that it would end up making such a huge impact on my life. I WAS HOOKED!! I fell in love with the workouts, the coaches, the staff and the people who would soon become my OTF family. These workouts have given me my life back. I have taken back control of my health and fitness, and I am strong, happy and confident once again and as a bonus I have lost 35 pounds! Thank you OTF!
