A Time to Pause

In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and reaching goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who God called us to be.

This year I am especially thankful for God's healing hand within my family, the joy and meaning that my girls bring to my life, daily laughter from my husband, friends that have morphed into family, and the practice of actually putting my hope in Jesus and not in circumstances or outcomes.

The Art of Home

Alana Stipech, a true hostess at heart, shows us how to create an inspiring and inviting space for Thanksgiving and beyond.

Alana Stipech is a design & hospitality enthusiast. With experience in prop styling, interiors, wine, and floral design, she has developed an eye for the best in all things lifestyle. Alana draws inspiration from travels as well as time spent living in NYC, Los Angeles, and Seattle – but now calls Nashville home along with her husband Kristopher, and tiny Australian Shepherd, Pony. Alana created and co-owns a natural wine bar, Bodega, in Los Alamos, California. She loves small details that make up a gathering, and this is a glimpse into her world of creating the most inviting space for this holiday season.

1. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR LOVE FOR DECORATING AND HOSTING?

I think it is something that has always been part of me. I didn’t grow up around it, or learn from anyone specifically. It’s just something that I crave, and that comes naturally to me.

2. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS?

Thanksgiving is both relaxed and lively at our home. We always start the day with breakfast and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. The day is spent cooking, spending time with friends and family, throwing the football around, and taking a walk around the neighborhood (with a glass of whiskey or wine in hand). I try to prepare as much as I can in the week leading up to Thanksgiving so that the day is calm, enjoyable, and delicious. It doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving to me until I enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie and coffee in the evening.

3. WHAT TASKS DO YOU COMPLETE AHEAD OF TIME FOR HOSTING A STRESS-FREE THANKSGIVING DAY?

I set the table the day before Thanksgiving, purchase my baked goods, and make floral arrangements. Making wine selections, creating a music playlist, and pre-batching cocktails are things that can be done ahead of time. My biggest hack is putting a post-it on each serving dish with exactly which food item will go on that platter. It makes those crazy last minutes leading up to dinner feel much more seamless. I learned that trick from my friend Shannon and it’s a game changer!

4. HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOUR GUESTS FEEL WELCOME IN YOUR SPACE?

I make sure to ask about dietary restrictions ahead of time, so guests feel included no matter what their food & beverage preferences are. If someone is gluten free I make sure to offer a small gluten free dessert and bread. It’s a thoughtful way to make someone feel loved. If a guest offers to help while I’m cooking I give them a simple task like filling up the water pitcher or opening bottles of wine. Giving guests a small job helps them feel included and like they are contributing to the experience.

5. ARE THERE ANY TIPS FOR SETTING THE PERFECT TABLE?

Be authentic! Linen tablecloths should be slightly wrinkly, branches from your yard make the perfect centerpiece, and kids’ handwriting makes for the sweetest place cards. Mix and match glassware if you don’t have a perfect set. Don’t use scented candles where you will be eating as the scent will interfere with the food. Have a bottle of both white and red wine open for guests to choose from.

"...if you can find pieces for your home that you genuinely love, that’s the important thing. When I look around my house, I see all these things that mean something to me..."

6. EVERYTHING YOU CREATE IS SO BEAUTIFUL. DO YOU HAVE ANY SECRET CHEATS THAT YOU INCORPORATE?

I like to stick to a theme and color palette to keep the design elements reigned in. I am not a baker, so my desserts and rolls are always store bought. Dozen Bakery is my holiday go-to! When in doubt, add more candlelight and please turn off the overhead lights.

7. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP IN NASHVILLE?

Hester & Cook is my favorite for seasonal cocktail napkins and small tabletop items. A friend of mine just opened a gorgeous new shop, Department, with beautiful glassware and other special pieces for the home. Reed Smythe & Company has gorgeous goods; I always find something that I can’t live without. I’m at Import Flowers every other week for fresh greenery and florals for my home; they’re open to the public and carry everything you could want!

8. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE THANKSGIVING?

My parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nephews came to our new home for Thanksgiving in 2022. It was their first time visiting Nashville from California, and my mom’s last Thanksgiving. She passed away the following spring after battling breast cancer for three years. That Thanksgiving at our home was so memorable and special for all of us, and a real reminder that holidays aren’t about the centerpieces or perfect menu – but making memories with the people you love.

9. WHAT SETS YOUR STYLE AND AESTHETIC APART?

It’s hard to feel like anything is set apart with the overwhelming amount of content on social media. I think if you can find pieces for your home that you genuinely love, that’s the important thing. I started collecting things that I was drawn to years ago – small pieces from Heath Ceramics in San Francisco, vintage art from an antique store in London, a ceramic vase from Astier de Villatte while visiting NYC – and now when I look around my house, I see all these things that mean something to me, and they are all tied to a memory. That’s when your style becomes your own, and not copy and paste from an online sale that everyone else is buying from.

10. AS YOU LOOK BACK ON THIS YEAR, WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING SEASON?

I’m grateful for such a wonderful community of friends in Nashville, they all inspire me in different ways. I’m thankful for my husband Kristopher, and our best little pal Pony. They’re my favorite people to share life with. Other things that come to mind: good wine, football season, the luxury of simplicity, Forza Pilates, daily neighborhood walks, and good country music.

Keeping Nashville Cozy

NASHVILLE BLANKET PROJECT WAS CREATED TO BETTER OUR COMMUNITY.

Founded by Chris and Marissa Barrett, a husband-and-wife duo, Nashville Blanket Project was designed with the intent to help better our community. The pair, who are both natives of Franklin, felt inspired and knew they wanted to help their neighbors in any way they could, so they embarked on a very fulfilling, life-changing journey.

Prior to the formation of Nashville Blanket Project, Marissa was working as a school counselor and had a craftbased social enterprise called Novel Creature. In the winter of 2017, she saw that the organization, People Loving Nashville, had a need for blankets for the people they served. Marissa and Chris wanted to be able to meet that need in an ongoing and sustainable way. So, they worked to bring the Nashville Blanket Project to life. In June 2018, they launched the business at the 12 South Farmers Market.

Nashville Blanket Project’s goal has always been to provide a small token of comfort to our Nashville neighbors in need - whether someone is experiencing homelessness, have become victims of a natural disaster, or just need an extra hand. They have partnered with local nonprofit organizations who specialize in meeting the needs of those neighbors. Since their launch in 2018, with the amazing support of the community, they’ve been able to donate over ten-thousand blankets to neighbors in need.

“We started with Mexican blankets. They are a traditional style; made in Mexico with 100% reclaimed fibers… They’re awesome, but they’re not our designs. So, in 2021, [we began creating] our own unique designs,” Marissa says.

As Tennessee natives, Chris and Marissa wanted to give an ode to the “southern, country, southwestern” style that Nashville embodies. Therefore, they created blankets that feature cowboy boots, horses, and quilt and

plaid designs. Chris works in software and is a designer, resulting in the duo being very collaborative when it comes to the creative process.

“He has the skills to make my ideas come to life,” Marissa shares. “Sometimes he comes up with an idea, sometimes I will. We really work together on that.”

Their blankets, which are made in North Carolina, are warm, durable, and perfect for camping, bonfires, pets, and more. The best part is, they were created to not only give people a chic, cozy blanket to keep in their home, but to provide a sense of warmth and comfort to someone in need. When you purchase a blanket, one is also given to a neighbor in need right here in Nashville.

Gifting and co-branding is another big aspect of Nashville Blanket Project; Those looking for brand gifts can add their logo to the hand-stitched label to give a personalized touch. In addition, they are also now offering custom blankets!

“A lot of things have grown beyond what we could have even dreamed, because we just didn’t know some of it was possible,” Marissa shares.

In addition to blankets, they also offer trucker hats, candles, and apparel – all things that help represent their tagline, “Keep Nashville Cozy.”

“With Chris and I being from this area and seeing the way it’s grown… there’s so much good about that, but there’s also the chance that Nashville could lose some of its charm,” Marissa says. “There’s so much history here and we just want to make sure the people pushed to the fringes are welcome and that Nashville doesn’t lose its soul… that’s really what ‘Keep Nashville Cozy’ means.”

Their blankets can be found at places such as The Getalong in East Nashville, the Richland Park Farmers Market, ACME Feed and Seed on Broadway, and The Nashville Zoo, in addition to their website and different events held around town.

“It’s been really moving,” Marissa shares on the positive impact Nashville Blanket Project has made and continues to make in the community. “It was a project that we

INSIDE THE FINE JEWELRY, FRAGRANCE, AND FINDS BOUTIQUE LOCATED IN THE HEART OF GREEN HILLS.

Finishing Touches at Nashville's Department

ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN FOX
The little things are what makes the whole picture. Welcome to the department of finishing touches.

New to Nashville as of September, Department is a fine jewelry, fragrance and finds boutique created by Camille Seven of The Dress Theory and LVD Bridal. Camille began her family of boutique retail brands in 2012, when she opened The Dress Theory bridal shop in Seattle for unique, fashion-forward brides searching for independent, quality designers. Soon after, she opened two more locations – one in San Diego and one in Nashville. Camille then debuted LVD Bridal in East Nashville, a sister brand offering designer wedding dresses for consignment. Now, twelve years later, she has created another brand to join the family!

Located in Green Hills, Department draws inspiration from classic luxury department stores and offers a carefully curated selection of fine jewelry from independent designers, perfumes and candles from artisanal fragrance brands, and unique tabletop items – such as cocktail glasses and table linens intended to elevate the everyday. After earning a degree in Art History at the University of California in San Diego, Camille lived in France and graduated from culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, completed design school in Manhattan, received her certificate in natural perfumery, and began The Dress Theory and LVD Bridal shops. Department offers an outlet for her other passions of jewelry and gemology, fragrance and the culinary arts.

With the storefront designed by Birmingham-based interior designer Jeremy Clark, Department embodies Camille's love for Parisian elegance; She provided Clark with a vision deeply rooted in her experiences in Paris and her time living there as a new mom and student. As one of the only woman-and-locally-owned fine jewelry retailers in Nashville, Department brings

new and fresh designs to the market with its offering of contemporary yet timeless pieces. Camille personally sources each item herself selecting unique, heirloom-worthy and ethically-sourced pieces ranging from earrings and necklaces to charms and pendants featuring 18k gold and gemstones such as opals, moonstones, green tourmaline, emeralds, rubies and diamonds. Ready-to-wear jewelry begins at just under $1,000, but Department also works with customers to create custom pieces working with their roster of designers. Camille credits the success of her boutiques to her passionate stylists and her incredible clientele who are all far more stylish, supportive, and visionary than she could’ve ever dreamed.

“Over the last twelve years styling 10,000 brides through The Dress Theory and LVD Bridal, I have witnessed firsthand what I’ve always known innately to be true - that finishing touches are what set brides apart and make a gown individual,” Camille shares. “The same goes for homes, dinner tables and personal style. The finishing touches can be as seemingly small as your favorite handmade mug for your morning coffee, the perfume that reminds you of your favorite destination, or a pair of earrings that always make whatever you're wearing feel special and complete. It’s these final layers that make our foundations – our clothes, our tabletops, ourselves – uniquely ‘you.’”

The mom of three calls Nashville home and can’t wait to share her interests beyond wedding dresses with the Middle Tennessee community. With her husband being her accountant and biggest supporter, she adds that she is truly thrilled to embark on this new journey, especially since her kids make everything more meaningful.

...celebrate the little things that make us feel like ourselves. “ ”

“I have always loved discovering and sharing finds with family and friends,” Camille shares. “To now be able to do so on a larger scale through the opening of Department is a lifelong dream come true. And to expand my involvement in life's special moments beyond wedding days... to anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, retirements, and even the everyday... what greater honor is there?”

Sourcing largely from Paris and New York, The Department is the first boutique to introduce several brands to the Nashville market. Striving to form a community that celebrates the little things that make us feel like ourselves, The Department loves making any

day feel a little more personalized - a little more magical. From their selection of beautiful gems from independent jewelry designers, rare niche fragrances, and standout tabletop and kitchenware that can’t be found elsewhere in Nashville, The Department is truly a oneof-a-kind shopping experience.

Their storefront is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by private appointment after hours or on Sundays or Mondays. Department also offers complimentary gift-concierge services and personal and private shopping options.
