Celebrating Abundance and Gratitude

As a kid, we always went around the Thanksgiving table saying what we're thankful for. Now, having a family of my own, the word "thankful" takes on a new level.

Surely I'm thankful for family and friends, a roof over my head, and good health, but this year, I'm counting extra blessings.

I am embarking on one year of owning this publication and platform. The support I've been graced with has been overwhelmingly incredible and I'm immensely grateful for the community's embrace both personally and professionally.

I refer to our partners as dear friends- because that's what they become- and I value each and every member of our ever-evolving PV City Lifestyle family. I aim to foster all our meaningful partnerships with TLC as I'm so appreciative to have only the best on board. What we are building is truly something special as we live in a truly special place.

I am thankful for the stories we tell spanning dynamic cover features to entertaining, insightful, impactful and inspiring editorials. There's a lot of love that goes into this magazine every month and I'm beyond humbled to have this platform embraced by YOU.

Speaking of you... thank YOU for being part of who we are. We are the heart and soul of the Valley where generosity and warmth abound. Our vibrant community thrives off togetherness, and I feel especially connected to the community I so greatly cherish.

This issue is packed with stories that pay it forward from NFL's Donovan McNabb's give back initiatives, to women who ferociously move the Valley. As my grandfathers both served, supporting the military means a lot to me, and I am honored to share some stories that align with Veteran's Day, one of them paying ode to a fallen Navy hero... and another spotlighting AZ's beloved Marine, Bob Parsons. You'll also read about local kids who are using their hearts for good, valuing inclusiveness, compassion, and kindness.

Most of our City Scene is dedicated to our first annual September Style issue soirée, a swanky celebration that was generously and beautifully hosted by our partners at Square One Concepts, Bourbon & Bones in Scottsdale. Shoutout to Groove Mobile DJ's Dave Leden for keeping the party pumping and for spearheading his debut of the GlamBOT (Google it).

From our family to yours, have a heartfelt Thanksgiving filled with reflection and the true spirit of gratitude.

And to our veterans, thank you for your service.

Donovan McNabb still bleeds Eagles-green, but he’s all about Arizona being home-sweet-home.

“You can’t shovel sunshine,” says the former NFL quarterback.

In 2013, the Eagles retired McNabb’s no. 5 jersey when he was inducted to their Hall of Fame. However, the 6-time pro-bowler traded Philly for the Valley.

“We’ve lived here over 20 years.”

Ever since hanging up his jersey, Donovan dedicates his time to giving back. We scored an exclusive one-on-one with the NFL superstar on life post playing pro.

Hail Marys to Hope: McNabb’s Playbook for Giving Back

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY, 5 SPORTS PERFORMANCE, AND HOW IT HELPS YOUNG ASPIRING QBS.

Everyone wants to play quarterback and be in the limelight, but can they handle the tough times and self-reflect on their game? We try to prepare them from a mental standpoint first before the physical aspect. I talk to them during training- different coverages and fronts- and teach them how to handle certain situations. Sure, we do the fundamentals and footsteps, but we focus on navigating being critical of themselves, taking accountability, and digesting constructive criticism.

When your kid is 7 or 8, you think they’re a star because they can throw the ball. But at 10 or 11, when the pads come on, it all changes.

YOUR SON PLAYS FOOTBALL AT BROPHY, AND YOU COACH YOUR DAUGHTER’S SOFTBALL TEAM. AS A DAD, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO PAY IT FORWARD TO YOUTH?

It brings me joy helping kids gain confidence, and instilling in them work ethic, passion, and determination.

DESCRIBE YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE QB LEGACY.

We’re quarterback trainers from all around the country that unit with the same mentality and model of trying to take young men and build them into winners.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD QB?

Preparation, confidence, and being a team player.

YOU AND YOUR WIFE RUN THE CARIS SPORTS FOUNDATION GIVING KIDS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ORGANIZED SPORTS BY HELPING WITH FINANCIAL OBSTACLES. YOU’RE EMBARKING ON THE FOUNDATION’S NOVEMBER 16TH FUNDRAISING 5-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, “COCKTAILS AND SNEAKERS.” WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?

Dues, fees and travel… it all adds up, and those are the things that really hurt a lot of families. We help fund that. People reach out presenting their situations and we strive to provide support.

“Cocktails and Sneakers” is so fun obviously with sneaker fashion these days.

BUT CROCS WITH SOCKS… NOT ALLOWED?

Correct. We talked about this during our photoshoot. It’s not cool (haha).

AGREE FULL-HEARTEDLY (LOL). WHAT PARENTAL ADVICE DO YOU ENCOURAGE WITH YOUR KIDS?

My dad always instilled in me to write five goals down and look at them every day. I teach my kids to do the same (when they want to listen).

DID YOU ALWAYS DREAM OF PLAYING IN THE NFL?

I didn’t. I wanted to be a basketball player. It was my first passion and still is.

Football was something I took on in 7th grade. At first, my mom wouldn’t let me play, but I won the hard bargain.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST CHERISHED MEMORY FROM THE NFL?

One was my very first touchdown pass against the Washington Redskins… the other was making it to the Super Bowl.

AND AFTER YOUR TOUCHDOWNS, YOU’D ALWAYS POINT TO THE SKY…

Yes, I always tapped my chest twice for my late grandmother and grandfather and looked up. My grandfather always taught me to work hard.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR YOUNG NFL SELF ONE THING NOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Enjoy the moment, because when it’s over, it’s over.

WHAT’S NFL SUNDAY LIKE AT YOUR HOUSE?

I have four TVs going and my kids are running around. We often order wings and pizza.

WHY DO YOU LOVE LIVING IN THE VALLEY?

In February and March, I’m in flip -flops, shorts, and maybe a hoodie… when I look at the East Coast forecast, it’s a high of 30.

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM SANTA?

Space (haha). Really, to stay healthy, blessed, and continue to touch the lives around us.

FOSTERING FRIENDSHIP: INSIDE ARIZONA’S “BEST BUDDIES”

PROGRAM FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Minna and Caroline

A BETTER CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE

First grader Minna Van Arsdale has Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder caused by a random gene mutation.

“She has two letters flip-flopped in her coding. Minna is nonverbal, walks with assistance, has no useful hand function, experiences abnormal epileptic activity and seizures, breathing abnormalities, feeding and swallowing issues, gastrointestinal issues, and more. She communicates through an eye gaze adaptive communication device and gestures,” says Caroline Van Arsdale, Minna’s mom.

Caroline Van Arsdale (yes, related to the famed Van Arsdale NBA twins) says having a child with disabilities is “heart-wrenchingly amazing and debilitating at the same time.” Good days are awesome, and bad days are awful.

While she has an Arcadia address, Caroline sends Minna to Scottsdale’s Cochise Elementary School, given their “differently-abled specials” program.

“Minna is content and always smiles. She’s patient and kind. She loves partaking in Cochise’s ‘Best Buddies’ program – gaining attention from peers that she normally doesn’t get,” says Caroline.

Minna and Mom Caroline
Minna (Rett's Disorder) and Big Buddy Reese

Cochise is one of a handful Arizona elementary schools with a Best Buddies program. The goal: integrating their special needs students with their typical peers to create new friendships and foster understanding, compassion and inclusiveness.

“Doctors stress the importance of Minna spending time with other kids to further her development. It is good for her both neurologically and developmentally. She enjoys being with peers even if she can’t always interact. The happiness she feels is so immense and has a lasting effect on every part of her day. Every single ability thrives when she’s with peers, including her communication, her breathing, and her movements.”

Best Buddies is the largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is offered at select elementary, middle and high schools and is endorsed by numerous celebrities like Tom Brady and Cindy Crawford.

“Teachers nominate students that are good role models to partake in the program. We do multiple activities throughout the year,” says Shannon Blair, Cochise’s School Psychologist.

Shannon Blair heads the Best Buddies program at Cochise. She says the kids do “get to know you” projects, scavenger hunts, game days, kickball, and pizza and ice cream parties.

“All the participants love the program and look forward to the activities. Our special needs students benefit by having more friends; they always say ‘hi’ or give hugs to each other when passing on campus,” says Shannon.

While the students with disabilities savor their newfound friendships, their hand-selected “buddies” also benefit tremendously, equal if not more than their special friends.

Nehemiah (hearing impairment, intellectual disability) and Big Buddy Nicholas

“When you see the special kids and know you have your good health and everything, it’s hard seeing kids who aren’t as healthy. I feel like I can make them happier. I have a lot of patience, so I hope that helps,” says Cochise 5th grader Dylan Moses, designated buddy.

Buddies like Dylan have a lot to learn from their special pals especially when it comes to acceptance. At Cochise, there’s a lot of students with disabilities ranging autism, hearing impairment, speech impairment, orthopedic impairment, learning delays, and more.

“It makes me feel good knowing a teacher suggested I become a buddy. It shows me I’m a good person- someone nice and responsible,” says Reese Rinzler, Cochise 5th grader.

As big buddy Reese Rinzler gets to know Minna, Minna’s mom wants to emphasize the importance of people taking interest in her daughter’s condition.

“I want both kids and their parents to know what it means to Minna and to us as a family, but more importantly, I want others to understand that the slightest bit of positive attention is always welcome and encouraged. I think people get caught up on the ‘right’ thing to say or ask, but for us, it’s just nice to know people care. Kids and parents don’t have to know the right way to interact with Minna… it’s a learning process for all parties,” says Caroline.

Caroline says Minna is a driving force… a reminder for us to pause and breathe... to always focus on the here and now… that the smallest things overpower the big… to be humble... and to always practice humanity and instill it in your children.

“Would we change things if we could? Yes, we would certainly want our daughter not to suffer. However, we would never trade our experience or the path that she has graced us with.”

THE Fresh Start Story

PETZNICK: EMPOWERING WOMEN WITH CONFIDENCE AND COMMEMORATING HER SISTER

PAT
Ribbon-Cutting of the Petznick Education Center
Credit: John Hall

Credit: Ines Piquet

Pat Petznick grew up on five acres at 47th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, once considered “out in the country.” There was nothing around, not even a grocery store. Her dad had a cattle business, and his feedlot stood right behind their little wood-frame house. Pat shared a room with her sister Beverly, her best friend. Their mother made their clothes and taught the girls how to cook.

“I came from humble beginnings; we didn’t necessarily have it to give, but my parents were thoughtful, generous people and they set a wonderful example. I remember my father giving people money for groceries or taking children of employees shopping for toys,” recalls Pat.

Pat and her sister would go on to lead tremendously influential lives founding Fresh Start, an organization that provides access and resources helping women achieve self-sufficiency.

“Through our award-winning Impact Program, Fresh Start offers focused programs, services, access to training and education, as well as employment and career services to help women reach their personal and professional goals,” she says.

As our November issue is all about gratitude and giving, we thought it fitting to connect with Pat who vows to continue her late sister’s legacy.

Here’s our Q&A with the Valley’s queen of philanthropy.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLY DAYS WORKING IN THE SALON AND PROVIDING MAKEOVERS FOR PEOPLE… WHAT DID THAT MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR CLIENTS?

“Fresh Start at Rolf’s” was an opportunity for the entire salon to embrace the concept of helping women who were struggling. In those days, more than 30 years ago, there were few programs available. Everyone on staff took pride in their role and our clients appreciated what we were doing. It became an instrumental part of our internal culture, and I was exceedingly proud.

CONTINUED >

“We aim to stay true to our first mission statement in 1992: women helping women help themselves.”

IN 1992, YOU AND YOUR SISTER SOUGHT TO START FRESH START WOMEN’S FOUNDATION. TALK US THROUGH ITS CONCEPTION.

I always knew I wanted to do something to help women. When Beverly and I became part owners of Rolf’s, this paved way for us to achieve that dream.

Upon learning that we were seeking to start a program of this nature, Arizona’s First Lady Ann Symington suggested working with Harriet “Hank” Barnes who headed the Governor’s Office on Domestic Violence Prevention. She introduced us to the Arizona Coalition for Displaced Homemakers which provided the foundation of women to serve through our monthly workshops. Through our initial fundraisers, we raised money to financially support the agencies within the coalition. None of us could have envisioned where we’re at now these decades later.

YOUR INITIAL START WAS PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY REACHING OUT TO WOMEN IN NEED OFFERING A DAY OF PAMPERING EACH MONTH AT THE SALON YOU CO-OWNED. HOW DID YOU FEEL FUELING THESE WOMEN WITH CONFIDENCE?

I was filled with pride when our first class of women completed their “Fresh Start at Rolf’s.” Everything about our initial concept for this program was a win. We involved our stylists and their assistants to provide the services. The women invited to speak each month loved

the creative concept and opportunity. It was women helping women at its finest.

LATER THAT YEAR, FRESH START WOMEN’S FOUNDATION WAS OFFICIALLY BORN. DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR MEMORY THAT STICKS OUT FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF THE FOUNDATION?

The strategy in building the founding board is standout for me. I clearly remember the excitement of doing research in identifying our first chair and our first board members. Several of the women involved from our earliest days are still active today.

IN YOUR EYES, HOW HAS THE FOUNDATION EVOLVED OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS?

We’ve evolved thoughtfully, strategically and with relevance. We navigated through the Covid and launched Fresh Start on a renewed trajectory for our next decade and beyond. We have forged new partnerships with our corporate community and state leaders offering new and exciting opportunities for women to achieve self-sufficiency.

THE FOUNDATION RECENTLY RELEASED THE BOOK “THE FRESH START STORY.” WHAT DOES THIS BOOK MEAN TO YOU?

I am grateful that our story is captured forever in such detail. I find it quite remarkable. One realizes in reading the book that the very core of Fresh Start was done by volunteers.

TELL US ABOUT THE PETZNICK EDUCATION CENTER.

I am proud of everything represented through the Petznick Education Center. It is an outward expression of my family’s involvement in Fresh Start. My sons and their wives have been part of the mission from the very beginning. My granddaughters formed a youth arm of Fresh Start in our early days… and my granddaughters-in-law are on the auxiliary board today. We are teed up for a fourth generation of family to continue carrying on the mission. The Education Center is a hub for everything that happens at Fresh Start.

HOW DO YOU HOPE TO CONTINUE YOUR SISTER’S LEGACY?

Maintaining a laser focus on program delivery was always very important to Beverly. She was instrumental in forming our mentoring program which continues to evolve. We aim to stay true to our first mission statement in 1992: women helping women help themselves.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE?

“Follow your dream.”

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE SONG TO MOTTO YOUR LIFE AND/OR FOUNDATION, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The “Wind Beneath My Wings” because of all the heroes in our community who have come together to build and support my lifelong dream. Those involved would say the courageous women we serve are truly the wind beneath our wings.

For over three decades, Fresh Start has supported more than 60,000 Arizona women, serving approximately 4,000 women each year. FreshStartWomen.org

A HEARTFELT MISSION

Paradise Valley Heart Attack Survivor

Becomes Passionate Advocate on the Phoenix Heart Ball Committee

Catherine Biggers got involved with the Phoenix Heart Ball in 2020, inspired and motivated to join the initiative after she almost died from a heart attack.

“Picture an elephant sitting on your chest crushing you, and a really strong person grabbing your arm until it throbs.”

“I guess it happens to women in their late 40s and early 50s who are healthy… they just don’t know why,” says Catherine Biggers, Paradise Valley resident and passionate philanthropist.

Catherine’s story is an anomaly. She lives an active lifestyle, eats right, loves to travel and has no history of heart issues.

“I had a non-traditional heart attack given I don’t have normal risk factors like genetics, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol,” she says.

It’s an eye-opening account.

One day, Catherine was playing tennis, but when she got on the court, something didn’t feel right.

“My chest hurt, but things subsided and I started playing. After a few swings, the pain returned, so I went home. I even Googled ‘heart attack’ due to the left arm and chest- that’s what you hear.”

Since the discomfort wasn’t terrible, Catherine decided to sleep it off assuming things would diminish. But around 4am, she was awoken by agony taking over her arm, chest, back, neck and jaw.

“I was tempted to take a Tylenol and forget about it, but ultimately went to the hospital. The doctors concluded I was having an active heart attack.”

At the time, Catherine was 45 years old… a beautiful, athletic woman. She never imagined finding herself being rushed in an ambulance to a Cardiac ICU.

“Picture an elephant sitting on your chest crushing you, and a really strong person grabbing your arm until it throbs.”

The Cardiac ICU became Catherine’s home for a week. There, she learned that despite what we see in the movies, heart attacks happen over time and get more drastic as the blockage of the clot grows.

“It’s better to be sent to the hospital and be sent home than never make it to the hospital.”

By the time she made it to the ICU, Catherine’s clot was in late stages. Had she not trusted her intuition and gone to the hospital, it could have been fatal.

“I was on medication and in and out of consciousness for a few days. When I left the hospital, I was hit with a wave of shock. I had PTSD and feared falling asleep. For months, I’d try to keep my eyes open and watch silly shows to stay awake. Every time I saw an ambulance I’d cry.”

According to Catherine’s cardiologist, she had Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), a rare heart condition that accounts for about 25% of heart attacks in women under 60 years old.

“After discharge, I didn’t have to alter my lifestyle- I was already healthy. That’s the scary part. It was kind of like, ‘good luck, we hope we won’t see you again.’”

Catherine’s trauma therapist helped her move forward. She also utilized her recovery time wisely and meaningfully, researching the American Heart Association seeking information, insight and involvement.

“I was at a birthday party and sat next to a woman who just so happened to be chairing the Heart Ball that year.”

It was serendipitous. Thanks to that birthday party exchange, Catherine joined the Heart Ball. She’s going on multiple years serving an array of committees.

“I find value in sharing my story. Know your body. Be your own advocate. If we don’t care for ourselves, we can’t care for those we love. I could have had a very different outcome.”

FOUR GENERATIONS OF GIVING: A FAMILY LEGACY

Childhelp was founded by Hollywood A-listers Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson providing hope and healing to abused and neglected children.

“We met on the ‘Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet’ show. We were actresses who were later chosen to go on a worldwide entertainment tour. It’s funny how that worked out, being together on that mission and then on our life’s mission as well,” says Yvonne.

When the duo founded Childhelp in 1959, the Murray Method was also in development. Created by psychotherapist and author Marilyn Murray, the method morphed into a popular approach helping people heal from trauma. It was that time, a few decades ago, that the marriage between Childhelp and the Murray family was born.

“I was one of the first people to speak publicly about my personal story of childhood trauma,” recounts Marilyn Murray.

The two influential forces formed a special union; in fact, Marilyn remembers delivering a speech at Childhelp, bravely stepping into the public eye.

“You can help many people out of abundance, not out of starvation. Take care of yourself first and stay healthy so you have something to give,” she says.

Marilyn, a trailblazer, offered pro bono expertise to Childhelp. And when the organization moved its HQ to Arizona, she was eager to get her daughters involved.

“I always saw my parents give back. It was a powerful example,” says Jinger Richardson, Marilyn’s daughter.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Jinger and her sister Missy Anderson became key members in the organization.

“Children don’t have the power to fight back,” explains Jinger. “That’s what keeps us going.”

Fast forward to now, and the Murray family has four generations vested in Childhelp.

“I am proud that my daughters and granddaughter are a big part of Childhelp,” says Marilyn. “My great-grandson Cole is innately caring. They call him ‘The Governor.’”

10 things you didn’t know about Bob (that you’ll find out in his bestselling book)

Our Valley’s Beloved Veteran, Mr. Parsons

Yes, he’s the mastermind behind GoDaddy, but how many people truly know the real-life story of the highly successful, philanthropic, and colorful man behind the company?

In his new bestselling book, FIRE IN THE HOLE! The Untold Story of My Traumatic Life and Explosive Success , GoDaddy and PXG founder Bob Parsons, in a highly confessional account, shares the story of his life, from his humble upbringing to his meteoric rise as one of early tech’s pioneers.

As November celebrates Veteran’s Day, we are paying homage to this entrepreneurial U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran - recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He attended college at the University of Baltimore on the G.I. Bill and graduated magna cum laude. Here are ten intriguing insights about Bob that you’ll discover in his book.

1. Bob Parsons is a descendant of coal miners. He grew up in the 1950s in a blue-collar, working-class neighborhood in East Baltimore. Money was tight, given his parents shared a mutual fondness for gambling (and the fact they were not particularly good at it). In his book, Bob talks about the financial struggles his family faced, as well as the emotional neglect he experienced as a boy.

2. Bob failed fifth grade, and every year thereafter was a photo finish.

3. Bob was 17 years old when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. At 18, he was deployed to Vietnam at the height of the war as a replacement for one of five guys – four of whom were killed in action and one who was critically injured.

4. Bob’s early experiences reveal an innate resiliency that got him through a harrowing tour of duty in Vietnam. His time serving shaped his attitude, demeanor and determination from launching his first company, Parsons Technology, to making bold business decisions that would eventually make him one of the wealthiest people in the world.

5. A lesson Bob has kept with him all these years comes from his father. His dad always told him that when you love something, it tells you all its secrets.

6. In his book, Bob reveals the struggles he faced throughout his lifetime because of PTSD, as well as the efforts he has made to treat it. This includes novel therapeutic uses of psychedelics. CONTINUED >

7. Bob imparts the wisdom he’s acquired over the course of his career, like passion being a wonderful driver for success, and you can wait too long for something. Most importantly, strike while the iron is hot.

8. Bob shares his philosophy on worry. He says feeling worried won’t change the outcome, as it makes you miserable and holds you back. Therefore, he’s adamant about letting go of worry and feels it’s a key to success. While he vowed his family (if he ever had one) would never lack for anything, he never imagined the wealth he would earn as the founder of Parsons Technology, GoDaddy, PXG, and YAM Worldwide. (BTW, “YAM” playfully stands for: You’re a Mess, a colloquialism from Baltimore said between friends.)

9. Bob reminds us that strength comes from overcoming challenges you once thought you couldn’t do, not from doing what you already know. He’s known for saying, “We’re not here for a long time; we’re here for a good time.”

10. Bob is an entirely self-made multi-billionaire whose hardscrabble childhood, combat service, and unrelenting discipline and pride (because of his Marine Corps service) have shaped his success in every way.

At the end of the day, the book proves Bob Parsons is an everyman who has made it. He’s authentic. The kind of guy you want to have a beer with. And his reflections on life, business, and giving back are heartbreaking, heartwarming, humorous, and inspiring.

In his own words, “I always remind myself I’m still that guy who shot a snake during the Vietnam war and was not allowed to throw hand grenades. Like most guys, I’m just a knucklehead.”

And he is happy to emphasize, “If this ‘knucklehead’ can do what he has accomplished, anyone can.”

A TRIBUTE TO VALOR: HONORING A NAVY CROSS HERO

Mom Accepts Late Son’s Induction into the Arizona Runner’s Hall of Fame

On May 3rd, 2016, Naval Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charles Keating IV, age 31, died in Iraq of combat-related injuries. Less than two months before, Charles was awarded the Silver Star Medal.

Charles’ Silver Star was posthumously upgraded to the Navy Cross, the second highest decoration awarded to Navy personnel signifying his extraordinary heroism during combat operations.

“Charlie had a habit of putting his life at risk. The last thing I told him was, ‘Charlie, don’t be a hero,’ and hugged him goodbye,” says Krista KeatingJoseph, Charles’ mom.

Krista considers her Navy SEAL son the bravest man she’ll ever know. With her tremendous loss, comes a dedication of ensuring Charlie is remembered for his big heart both on and off the battlefield.

“Charlie had a big heart and big personality. He did track, cross country, and was even on a Discovery Kids Outward bound TV. He created a ‘bottle cap football club,’ and was a big fan of ultimate frisbee and paintball. If he saw a struggling kid, we would find him at dinner that night. He was funny and had a contagious smile,” says Krista.

Krista scripted a tribute to her son… a children’s book: Big-Hearted Charlie Runs the Mile, as the lifelong runner shared her love of exercise with her children, especially her first born, Charlie.

Charlie & Krista

“Charlie wasn’t the best runner at the beginning but had incredible talent. He was also motivated to win. I ran my whole life and won the HS state mile as a junior at Chaparral, so I always encouraged my kids to embrace an active lifestyle. After Charlie’s death, I wanted to memorialize is legacy. So, with my mom being the illustrator, we curated a beautiful children’s book.”

Big-Hearted Charlie Runs the Mile is about Charlie’s experience when he joined his Arcadia High School track team. Smaller than most of the boys he competed against, it was Charlie’s perseverance that led to his great success.

“When Charlie was as a freshman at Arcadia, he hadn’t grown yet… but that didn’t stop him. Instead, he’d run more and double the workouts. It all came together his junior year when Charlie grew to be 6’1’.  It was tough starting small, but it made him mentally stronger. He did everything with a smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes.”

According to Krista, Charlie loved a good challenge and could talk his way out of anything, especially his French grade.

“Charlie ultimately broke the 4-minute mile at Indiana University leading him to BUDS and ultimately becoming a SEAL.”

Krista is now embarking on accepting another accolade for her late son: Charlie being inducted into the Arizona Runners Hall of Fame created by Dr. Art Mollen in 2011. The esteemed Valley physician with over 50 years in the business aims to honor the outstanding achievements of distinguished individuals to the running community of Arizona.

“I am coming to Phoenix to accept the award. The only thing that could prevent me from being there is if my husband passes away, as he has ALS. I love visiting Arizona where I was born and raised. My first stop is the trail at 32nd Street and Lincoln where I ran with my kids when they were young. The next place I visit is my parents – they’re 89 and 92.  My dad was a counselor at Arcadia High School for 40 years.  It is such an honor to have my son remembered,” says Krista.

With meaningful Veteran’s Day timing, Krista, who now lives in Florida, will accept her son’s Hall of Fame induction.

Dr. Mollen will be celebrating select individuals, including Krista’s dear Charlie, at a special dinner the night before his 49th Annual Phoenix 10K on Sunday, November 10th.

Victoria Grimm, Align Counseling

Former Staff Sergeant, United States Air Force

During my time in the United States Air Force, my role focused on creating meaningful communication within the community and sharing the Air Force’s story and mission. This sparked my curiosity about how people connect—or sometimes, struggle to. Traveling the world gave me a new perspective on human nature and deepened my passion for understanding how we can create more connection rather than disconnection. Today, this passion drives my therapy practice, where I help couples and their families overcome fear and build more connected, fulfilling lives.

ARCADIA MOM

MEL’S FLORAL GUIDE: FALL AND WINTER WONDERS

BLOSSOMS IN BUSINESS

Meet Mel, an Arcadia-based floral artisan.

The mom of three and former reading specialist has found a fulfillment in flowers, redirecting her career as a neighborhood florist.

“Launched in 2018, we offer flowers for all occasions and have grown rapidly and organically as we prioritize making flowers fun and approachable. We strive to take your personal style and have it reflected in special and intentional hand-crafted arrangements,” says Mel Heinrichs, owner and lead designer of Flowers by Mel.

At heart, Mel is a self-proclaimed Midwest girl who loves playing tennis, hot yoga and traveling with her family. However, when it comes to work, she’s all about buds and blooms.

“Dried grasses and earthy tones are replacing delicate stems and pastels.  The days of densely packed arrangements are now being replaced with focal flowers that can be individually seen,” says Mel. With the holiday season in full swing, Mel shares insider tips on incorporating fall and winter floral décor to brighten your home, elevate your lifestyle, and enhance your holiday celebrations.

GIFTING FLOWERS

According to Mel, gifting should be easy, thoughtful, and intentional. Sending someone something creative and festive to spruce up their living space is the perfect way to show your appreciation. Hearty centerpieces are her most requested item around the holidays; they overflow with texture and focal stems. Handtied bouquets and ball jars are also in demand for a more budget friendly route.

SEASONAL COLOR PALATES

Dark cherry, metallics, non-matchy and focal point arrangements are all the rave this holiday season. Mel loves color combos like delicate blues and silvers, blush pinks and gold, and emerald green and burgundy. For her, an ideal holiday arrangement is neutral with a pop of color.

FLORAL STYLES

There’s been a shift away from foliage in favor of arrangements with loaded florals. This year, it’s all about personalization, color blocking, bold colors, dried stems, focal stems and a focus on quality over quantity.  Mel says we’re seeing richer, bolder colors like deep reds, dark mauve, velvety purples, and fiery oranges instead of muted tones.  Bud vases are wildly popular and give the ability to add color, texture and design along with personalizing the table with other elements like ribbons, mosses, fruits, vegetables and other natural elements. Branches and metallics always play a big role in the holiday floral industry. A traditional low flowing centerpiece, whether big or small, will always be timeless and classic in holiday tablescaping.

TYPES OF FLOWERS FOR FALL/WINTER

Mel prefers utilizing grasses, chocolate sunflowers, orange marigolds, and mum disbuds in fall.  Dahlias are also hot coming in a variety of fluffy looking options and a tighter disbud.  Winter stems that will make a comeback are blooming branches, feathery greens and the ever-popular magnolia, in addition to baby’s breath and carnations. However, baby’s breath is being used non-traditionally, hung in installments, turned into garland, and dyed different colors giving it a classic and timeless look.

Mel says an unexpected flower we’re sure to see more of are hellobores.  Dubbed a “winter rose,” they’re buttercup in shape and come in dreamy colors of vivid lime green, dusky pinks, and slate blacks. Keep in mind, they only have a vase life of 3-7 days.

HOLIDAY FLORAL TRENDS

Candles make a big impact on setting a warm and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate varying heights, votives, tapers and mixing different metals.

The latest sensation is exercising an artistic flair and flower manipulating. Reflexing roses, plucking petals off sunflowers, or pinching the middle out of carnations make stems take on a whole new look.

Vessels are the latest craze for florals, and note that ceramic vases (instead of clear glass) immediately elevates an arrangement.

Mel also values a stunning entryway centerpiece flaunting branches and focal flowers. Whether for your home or event, such displays will set the mood for the holidays and welcome guests with style and purpose.

BALANCING AESTHETICS AND LONGEVITY

Mel shares the key to balancing aesthetics and longevity is mixing highs and lows.  Get creative using hearty stems mixed with fancier ones providing a solid balance.  Getting the most out of your flowers is extremely important to the local floral pro… that’s why Mel invests time and expertise into curating crafty flower recipe and offerings.

Snag Saks Style

SEASONAL STAPLES FOR FALL AND WINTER

Fall and winter style is all about making a fashion statement.

According to Lisa Moore, a Saks Fifth Avenue Club Consultant at Biltmore Fashion Park, expect trends spanning deep color tones, luxe layering, over-the-top outerwear, street style, country chic, monochromatic from head to toe, and different textures like silk with suede or leather with lace.

Lisa’s job is helping clients feel confident and empowered through clothing and accessories. With the holidays upon us, we’re divulging Lisa’s seasonal style secrets.

Leopard everything (shoes-to-clothes) is a must-have, in addition to incorporating trending colors spanning rich burgundy, siren red, pine green, and dark chocolate. As for jeans, go for wide-leg or waxed paired with cropped blazers (and don’t be scared of denim-on-denim).

For skirts, opt for long or mini leather coupled with cashmere. And for your feet, cool kicks include loafers, ballet flats, platform heels and western boots.

Seasonal closet staples from brands like L’Agence, Cinq a Sept, Veronica Beard, and Christian Louboutin are all the rave, and if you want something more  budget-friendly, Lisa likes Good American tank dresses easily worn under blazers or denim jackets. And if you’re feeling splurge-worthy, Lisa loves L’Agence jeans. Her favorite style is the Ruth.

FROM THE BLIND PIG TO DIMAGGIO’S, INDULGE IN SCOTTSDALE’S MOLTO BUONO ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

Savor Italy in the heart of Scottsdale, where Dean Martin’s smooth melodies serenade you and each bite of exquisite house-made mozzarella is a revelation.

“Our ‘muttz,’ or mozzarella, is the best without question. When you cut into it and see all the milk spout, you know it’s something special,” says Brandon Gioffre, owner of DiMaggio’s Italian Restaurant, formally, The Blind Pig.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIMOTHY FOX PHOTOGRAPHY

Brandon and his wife Michele don’t have a formal culinary background; however, as Calabrese Italians, they learned the art of cooking before learning to ride a bike. The two have since found a passion, fulfillment and knack for creating magic in the kitchen.

“We love to cook. When our friends come over, we make enough food to feed an army. As Italians, food is our love language,” Brandon says.

It’s a love language that speaks to foodies all over the Valley. After making a name for themselves at the Uptown Farmers Market in Central Phoenix, the husband-wife duo started getting catering requests from big properties and private parties. As word spread they were the “it” Italian chefs, Brandon and Michele sought to open what they say Scottsdale lacked.

Kohler Bathroom Design

“AS ITALIANS, FOOD IS OUR LOVE LANGUAGE.”

“We struggled to find a restaurant that delivered authentic New York style Italian food. We tried tons of restaurants hoping to find our new favorite spot, but eventually realized we had to create one ourselves.”

A little over a year ago, the Gioffres discovered The Blind Pig on Hayden and decided to buy the business. They never changed the nook’s name… but gave the menu a makeover.

“Our go-to recipes are chicken parm, linguine with clam sauce, orecchiette with broccoli rabe & Italian sausage, chicken scarpariello, and our famous lasagna.”

Shortly after they took over The Blind Pig, their Italian eatery became all the buzz. Brandon says people came to dine from all over the Valley… even out-of-staters sought to experience their food.

“We encompass an old school vibe. It’s warm and inviting. We make you feel at home. The food is simple but complicated, made to order and made with love. Only the freshest ingredients.”

However, The Blind Pig is The Bling Pig no more. In fact, Brandon’s dream of giving his baby a refresh has come true… and prompted a restaurant name change.

“When we took over the restaurant space, it was already called ‘The Blind Pig,’ and we just kept the name. I always knew I wanted to rename it, but didn’t know which direction to take. When I met the DiMaggio family, it just clicked.”

Brandon says Frank DiMaggio, owner of MDF Development, had come into his restaurant for dinner and was simply blown away by their food.

“Frank said he had just returned from NYC and that our food was good- even better- than any places out there.”

Overcome with Italian-foodfulfillment, Frank and his MDF designers decided to step in and give the restaurant a refresh. They studied what an authentic Italian restaurant should look like and spearheaded a deserving remodel.

“It’s incredible. Thanks to Frank and his team, it feels like you’re eating in a true east coast hole-in-the-wall.  We are not in a fancy location with super tall ceilings.  We don’t have valet parking and a pretentious atmosphere.  It has that feeling of ‘if you know you know.’  Once you experience the food, you’re hooked.”

Brandon fittingly renamed his restaurant DiMaggio’s, paying ode to the guy who brought new life to his trattoria. Dressed in white table cloths, you can now take a taste for yourself.

Thanksgiving Gratitude: Celebrities Celebrate Life in Arizona

We asked 9 of our 2024 cover guys and gals why they love living in the Valley

Michael + Nicole Phelps

The most decorated Olympian of all time “We love playing golf at Silverleaf and enjoy Suns and Cardinals games (when the Ravens come to town- Michael is a big Baltimore fan). Our go-to dinner spots are Steak 44 and Elements. We love everything about living in Paradise Valley. However, the thing we love most is savoring the beauty of our stunning sky and sunsets. Plus, our community is so friendly. We’ve owned two homes in PV; it’s home, and we’re not going anywhere.”

Alice Cooper

The Godfather of Shock Rock

“When you land in Phoenix after you’ve been on tour, it’s like you’re on vacation. I went to Cortez High, hung at Christown Mall, and grew up watching ‘Wallace and Ladmo.’ Our kids went to Hopi Elementary School. PV is paradise, and PV is home.”

Randy Johnson

Diamondbacks World Series Winner, Travel Photographer

“We were fortunate to raise our kids in Paradise Valley, but it was important for my children to understand not everybody lives like that. Because I love to travel, we’d expose our kids to areas around the world where they could see how others lived. I vividly remember pulling up in front of a village and little kids lining up awaiting my children passing out fun stuff like crayons and paper.”

Sophie

Cunningham

The Phoenix Mercury superstar dubbed “Spicy Sophie”

“I’m all about The Global Ambassador and grabbing a burger at Harvey’s. We’re spoiled here to have many good options. I get to work with Tom Chambers, an Arizona legend, who is amazing... but I gotta give it back to him because he likes to talk trash. And the rest of the guys are just as incredible. During the Mercury off-season, I’m a Suns reporter. I love being on another side of basketball.”

Hailey Ostrom

Pro Golfer

“My first hole-in-one was at TPC Stadium hole 16 the day after the Waste Management Phoenix Open- totally storybook! To top it off, I also turned professional that morning. Truly, a sign from God I was on the right path. I love Kierland for shopping and dining (Etta!). I also love Blanco and Frank & Lupes.”

Dierks Bentley

American country music singer and songwriter

“I grew up in Arcadia before Arcadia was cool. Memories include causing havoc at Fashion Square, skateboarding around the mall. We also hopped in people’s yards taking beer from their refrigerators and partook in legendary desert parties doing bottle rocket wars. Our family spent summers at Lake Powell, and for a job, I painted citrus tree trunks. I met my wife Cass at Ingleside Middle School; I had a crush on her. We dated on and off, and in 2005 I was opening for George Straight, she walked on our bus, and I knew that was it.”

Danica Patrick

Mike Tyson

“Iron Mike”

“Living in Paradise Valley was incredible especially with my custom pigeon coop. I lived next door to Leona Helmsley.”

The most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel car racing + entrepreneurial boss babe

“I love the weather. I love that everything comes through Phoenix; every tour, every speaker, every artist, comedian, you name it- there’s plenty of entertainment. I love that we’re not too far to the beach, you can get to the mountains, you can go to Sedona. Most importantly, it’s where my friends are. I’m a big fan of Zinc Bistro and True Foods. I love alone time, taking walks and listening to music.”

Grayson Allen

#8 on the Phoenix Suns

“It’s surreal. The afternoon I signed my latest contract, I couldn’t stop thinking how lucky we are, how grateful we are, and how blessed we are because we’re in an incredible situation. In the NBA, this is probably the most loved and the most accepted I have ever felt from a fan base. It doesn’t go unnoticed; I really appreciate it. It’s a cool reminder and a cool thing whenever you run through the tunnel and kids are wearing your jersey wanting autographs.”

He is a fourth-generation engineer with a background in mathematics and computer science - fields that demand precision and accuracy. Combining these disciplines with the artistry of a plastic surgeon allows him to create natural results that have earned him thousands of 5-star reviews. With prestigious degrees and training from Duke University, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the University of Washington, Dr. Prucz is one of the best trained and most respected surgeons in the Valley.

THE IMPACT OF OZEMPIC ON PLASTIC SURGERY: IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR PATIENTS

GLP-1 inhibitors like Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, and Mounjaro were initially designed to treat diabetes. Now, they have become popular weight loss medications, and have packed our lobby with patients seeking breast lifts, tummy tucks, facelifts, neck lifts, and arm and thigh body contouring. However, the use of such medications comes with unique considerations when undergoing plastic surgery, particularly regarding the timing of procedures and their impact on the body.

Stopping GLP-1 Inhibitors Before Surgery

Since these medications slow digestion, metabolism, and affect blood sugar, they can increase the risk of complications. To minimize risks, stop GLP-1 inhibitors at least one week before surgery. However, discussing this decision with the prescribing physician is important, especially for patients taking GLP-1 inhibitors for diabetes.

The Role of Breast Lifts and Tummy Tucks - Post-Ozempic Weight Loss

After losing a large amount of weight, individuals often experience sagging of the breasts, belly, arms, and thighs. A breast lift repositions a deflated breast on the chest and tightens the skin, creating a more youthful appearance. Tummy tucks redefine the abdomen by tightening the abdominal muscles. Similarly, tightening procedures can be performed for the arms and medial thighs. It’s important before any of these surgeries to be at a stable goal weight for at least 3 months since continued weight loss after surgery can lead to additional skin laxity, diminishing the results.

Ozempic Faces: A New Aesthetic Challenge

One of the notable side effects of rapid weight loss with GLP-1 inhibitors is “Ozempic faces” where the face loses fat leading to a gaunt or hollow appearance. This can make individuals look older or tired. A facelift or neck lift can help rejuvenate the face by tightening skin, improving wrinkles, and restoring a more youthful contour to the cheeks and jawline. In some cases, fillers may also be used to restore volume.

“Next season I’ll be in a new age class that is even more competitive, so I’m excited to train hard and hopefully win pro-am US Nationals again.”

While many working moms- and moms in generalfeel snagging alone time seems selfish, Lauren says having a hobby makes her a better mom, better wife and better business owner.

“I wake up very early in the morning and sacrifice leisure time to ensure I can dance and that my family, employees, and clients all get the attention they deserve. It’s an action-packed schedule, but totally worth it,” she says.

With an esteemed interior design background and reputation, we got to know another side of Lauren… a side that’s earning praise for her graceful performances.

“My instructor and I just won my division of Pro-Am International Standard at USDC… the ballroom dancing US National Championships! As an amateur, I dance with a professional for a partner. He competes on the professional circuit.”

Lauren grew up doing ballet, but as she entered her teens, the pressure-filled environment became unhealthy, and she wasn’t having fun anymore. She stumbled upon a ballroom dancing group class, and on a whim, signed up.

“I fell in love with it, found an amateur partner, and started competing while still in high school.”

After competing with her partner for a few years, Lauren took a long break to finish college, start her design/build business (MDF Development), and have a baby. Once her son was out of the infant stage, she felt a strong yearning to revisit dancing.

“I was hesitant at first, but my husband encouraged me to bring ballroom back into my life.”

Lauren’s favorite dances vary between all five: waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep. She says it’s fun to play different characters, dance to different music, and master different techniques.

“My coach and I practice 4-5 days, and I practice by myself daily. Dancing takes immense endurance. The most important thing for me to do is show up consistently, have a dedicated focus, and push myself physically and mentally.”

As for the outfits, Lauren prefers a classic “old Hollywood” look with feathers and chiffon. She’s all about her new custom champagne-and-white colored dress.

“Next season I’ll be in a new age class that is even more competitive, so I’m excited to train hard and hopefully win pro-am US Nationals again.”

According to Lauren, if you want to break into the world of ballroom dancing, take the plunge. She says it’s incredible for your mind and body and gets more fun as you progress. Even if you never want to compete, studios offer private and group lessons, practice parties, and social dances.

“With TV shows like ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ ballroom dancing is becoming more and more mainstream. Plus, it’s a great workout that improves cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility.”

With a rich background in luxury interior design, Lauren, along with her husband Frank DiMaggio, bring stunning remodels to market. mdfdev.com

YOUR DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

ASK LINDSAY

Lindsay E. Benjamin, J.D. BENJAMIN LEGAL

My spouse and I just separated, and the holidays are coming up. I don’t know what to do about the children. Any tips?

Co-parenting during the holidays can be challenging, but with effective communication and planning, it can also be a positive experience for both parents and children. Here are five tips to help get you through the season successfully.

1. Establish a Holiday Schedule Early - Discuss and agree on a holiday schedule well in advance to avoid last-minute conflicts. Determine which parent will have the children on specific days (with proposed start and end times- trust me), including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and any other significant holidays. While it’s important to have a plan, be open to adjustments if necessary. If possible, it can be beneficial for children to see their parents together on holidays and celebrate as a family.

2. Communicate Openly and Respectfully - Use clear and respectful communication to discuss plans, expectations, and any changes to the schedule. This helps prevent misunderstandings and reduces stress. When discussing co-parenting matters, try to use neutral language and keep conversations solely focused on the children rather than personal grievances. I often advise clients to pretend that a judge is reading your texts to help keep them as neutral as possible (and yes, texts are admissible in court, so it’s always best to be kind for a myriad of reasons).

3. Create New Traditions - Encourage your children to help create new holiday traditions that reflect your family’s current dynamics. This can help them feel secure and excited about the holidays. Ask your children for their input on what traditions they would like to establish.

4. Keep the Children’s Best Interests in Mind - Always make decisions based on what is best for your children. Consider their feelings, preferences, and needs when making holiday plans. Try to resolve disagreements away from your children, keeping in mind that their ability to handle stress is far less than that of an adult.

5. Get Support - The holiday season can be emotionally taxing. Make sure to prioritize your own well-being by taking time for yourself and seeking support from friends, family and/or a professional as needed. Demonstrating a positive attitude and resilience can serve as a powerful example for your children, helping them cope with the changes in their family dynamic as well.

It is possible for co-parents to create a more harmonious holiday experience for themselves and their children, and foster a sense of joy and togetherness by limiting the challenges that may arise.

Between Innings: The Junis Family

Off the Field with Scottsdale Baseball Wife, Influencer Brianne Junis

For many baseball pros, the Valley becomes their home away from the diamond. Despite differing MLB teams, players seem to unite in Scottsdale, raising their families in our beautiful community.

“I visited Jake during Spring Training and immediately felt at home,” said Brianne Junis, MLB wife.

Brianne Junis is married to Jakob, a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. He previously played in MLB for the Kansas City Royals, San Francisco Giants, and Milwaukee Brewers.

“Jakob has a crazy schedule. I, however, have gotten used to wearing all the hats- mom, dad, chef, chauffeur, etc,” says Brianne.

Soaking up the off-season, Jakob is now savoring time with his family.

“We became parents young, so we joke we have no idea what we’re doing,” she says.

We got to check out Brianne’s newly remodeled home and scored the scoop on life as a baseball wife and Insta-influencer.

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A BASEBALL WIFE?

Not glamorous. I stay home in Arizona year-round while Jake plays.

ARE YOU A BIG BASEBALL FAN?

I am not a sports fan at all, and Jake loves that about me. He can call me after a game, and I am simply there to support him regardless.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN ARIZONA?

We have a great group of very helpful friends. We bought our house in 2020 before the world shut down—so glad we did!

HOW DO YOU FEEL INSTAGRAM PLAYS A ROLE IN REFLECTING YOUR LIFE?

On Instagram, I am raw and relatable. I share my struggles of solo parenting, my mental health, my funny moments. My life can be lonesome without Jake around... I’m thankful for my small and supportive online community.

WHAT ELEMENTS DO YOU FEEL MAKES A HOUSE A HOME?

I value personal touches. For exam ple, my husband and I call each other “mommy pig” and “daddy pig,” so we have many trinkets of pigs.

EMBARKING ON AN INTERIOR JOURNEY WITH MEG BEHRENS DESIGN, WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO ACHIEVE?

My interior style is earthy, but cozy. I want my home to look and feel lived in! Pretty, but functional. It was nice letting a designer make all the decisions!

WHAT ARE THE HOLIDAYS LIKE WITH THE JUNIS FAMILY?

I’m not big on traditions… maybe because I’m not a good cook. Now that my home feels complete, I am more inclined to decorate for the holidays.

FUNCTIONAL Innovation FOR Diabetes MONTH

Before moving “back home” to Paradise Valley, Erin Calhoun-Delaney worked in public relations for celebs and even danced in the Super Bowl halftime show with Diana Ross. She did it all with diabetes, being one of the 38M+ living with the chronic disease, according to the CDC.

“The constant managing of fluctuating blood sugars is exhausting,” says Erin Calhoun-Delaney.

We connected with the former PR pro-turned-inventor on launching SkirtMyPump, an innovative undergarment for insulin pumpers or those with medical devices that need to be attached or close to the body.

“At 6 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The disease has made achieving my dreams harder; I wanted to become a professional dancer,” says Erin.

Back then, Erin didn’t have the patience, skills or technology to manage her condition given the demand of professional dancing, so she pursued public relations. However, after having kids and getting divorced, she left Los Angeles, moving back to Arizona.

“I shifted gears to focus on SkirtMyPump after years of uncomfortably wearing an insulin pump. SkirtMyPump is a shining example of someone who saw a need to make our T1D lives a bit easier.”

SKIRTMYPUMP

Most pumps with tubing come with a clip; however, clipping a pump to a waistband weighs down the area. SkirtMyPump’s patented slip is designed with multiple pocket openings and zippers for an insulin pump or other medical device. Secure and accessible, it’s available in six sizes and placed strategically so the bulge of the pump is discreet.

Should I wear compression stockings when I travel this holiday season?

Yes! Pregnancy causes a decrease in what we call your peripheral vascular resistance. This means the blood that flows down to your feet has a harder time returning to your heart. If you are on an extended trip, in a car or on a plane, this can further decrease the peripheral vascular resistance and cause your legs to swell.

A few tips when purchasing a compression stocking:

1) Measure the largest diameter around your calf (tip: use a string and then put the string on a ruler or measuring tape)

2) Choose a “tightness” that is listed as 20 - 30 mmHg

3) Knee high should work just fine

To learn more about choosing the right compression stocking, scan the QR code and visit Dr. Lexi’s YouTube channel!

Olivia’s Book Club

Out of 50 Books, Here are Olivia’s Top Three Picks

So far this year, I have read 50 books, so it takes a lot to win my heart.

Here are three of my ultimate faves.

THE MEASURE , NIKKI ERLICK

Small boxes begin to arrive all over the world, inexplicably. Inside each, is a string that correlates with how long you will live. The revelations are just the beginning. The way people respond to the designation of ‘short stringer’ versus ‘long stringer’ sets the stage for a provocative, unforgettable novel that will move you to tears.

EXPIRATION DATES , REBECCA SERLE

Rebecca Serle is known for writing smart, romantic fiction, but with a twist. You’ll fall in love with main character Daphne Bell who has a passion for fashion, fun, and fancy cocktails. But naturally, she would also love to find Mr. Right. Dating life is different for Daphne, because every time she meets a guy, she receives a piece of paper with his name and their expiration date! Is knowing how long something will last a gift... or a curse?

YELLOWFACE , R.F. KUANG

In Yellowface, June Hayward is a struggling writer whose debut book is a disappointment. Among her grievances is the belief that her status as a white woman makes her less appealing in her industry. Her jealousy over the meteoric success of her former classmate, Asian American Athena Lieu, fuels her sense of victimhood. When June witnesses Athena’s sudden death, she sees an opportunity: to take Athena’s next manuscript, rework it, and present it as her own.
