A Season of Gratitude
As we turn the corner into November, there’s a familiar chill in the air and the comforting aroma of fall spices all around us. This time of year brings us closer to loved ones, offering a chance to pause and reflect on what truly matters. It’s in this spirit that we present our November issue, dedicated to the theme of thankfulness. Gratitude comes in many forms—sometimes it’s the quiet moments shared with family or the warmth of old friends gath ering around the table. Other times, it’s the everyday blessings we often take for granted: a roof over our heads, good health, or simply the ability to spend time together. This month, our community opens their hearts and shares what they're most thankful for, reminding us all that no matter how busy or stressful life becomes, there’s always something to appreciate.
In this issue, we explore stories of resilience, hope, and love. From individuals who've overcome great odds to find happiness to families celebrating the small victories that carry them through the year, we’ve collected stories that inspire and remind us of the power of gratitude. As we move toward the end of the year, let this issue be a gentle reminder that gratitude is more than just a feeling; it’s a way of life. Whether through acts of kindness, mindful reflection, or simply sharing a meal with those we love, it’s in these moments that we find true connection and joy.
Wishing you and yours a November filled with warmth, reflection, and gratitude. Warmly,

COMMUNITY REFLECTIONS: WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?
Justin

My smart and beautiful wife! She never ceases to amaze! She’s focused, driven, and a wonderful woman! She juggles multiple jobs while teaching and raising the kids. She deserves all the praise!!
We are thankful for our loving family, friends, and the life we live. We have a strong support system that surrounds our little family, and we couldn't make it without them.
I’m thankful for a job that encourages work-life balance, allowing me to provide for my family while being a present mom. Nothing is more important than family (and paying bills on time).

I am most thankful to still have my parents and my health. Also, extremely thankful for a community that has embraced my small business and helps it continue to grow.
Being an empty nester now, I miss my kids so much! I get to spend time with them individually throughout the year, but I’m most thankful for the moments when all four of us are together.

Reaching for the Stars
THE JOURNEY OF ASTRONAUT ROBERT CRIPPEN
ARTICLE BY STACY LEACH
In the quiet, unassuming town of Porter, Texas, a boy named Robert (Bob) Crippen dared to dream of flying among the stars. His family moved to the area when he was five after his father was injured in an oilfield accident. Growing up in the small sawmill town, his journey was filled with adventure. Initially a chicken ranch, the family transformed it into a Beer Tavern and Service Station. He and his sister, Betty, rode the school bus to New Caney School, where their imaginations soared. Surrounded by open land, they spent time with horses and other animals, while he also helped at the family’s service station, pumping gas and learning the importance of hard work early on.
Bob’s fascination with flight began early—he immersed himself in books about aviation and idolized pioneers like Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, and Jimmy Doolittle, never imagining that one day he’d meet them as peers. Watching old WWII films and building model airplanes fueled his desire to fly and led him to study Aeronautical Engineering and join the Navy becoming a Naval Aviator. Despite his parents’ fears, they encouraged his independence, allowing him to chase his dreams.
While in college his journey took a thrilling turn when Russia launched the first artificial satellite, leading to the formation of NASA. Inspired by the Mercury Seven, who were all test pilots and four of whom were Naval Aviators, he resolved to follow in their footsteps. "Flying higher and faster sounded good to me," he once said. Although obtaining his degree was challenging, he buckled down and pursued an Aerospace Degree.
Bob’s path to becoming an astronaut wasn’t straightforward. In 1965, while attending Test Pilot School,
he seized an incredible opportunity for a highly classified program called the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL). Although the program was canceled for various technical and financial reasons in 1969, his journey didn’t end there; he transitioned to NASA’s Astronaut Office.
While waiting for flights, Bob contributed to groundbreaking projects like Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, collaborating with the Russians during the Cold War. But his most significant work came in helping design the Space Shuttle. In 1981, he served as the pilot of *Columbia* on the first orbital flight of the Shuttle Program. Later, he became the Director of the Space Shuttle program and the Kennedy Space Center, paving the way for future space exploration.
Now retired in South Florida, Bob reflects on his remarkable career. Though he enjoys ocean fishing, his heart remains in the stars. Excited by private industry’s involvement in space exploration and is particularly excited about the Artemis Program, which aims to return humans back to the Moon. He stays connected through his daughter, Susan, who works at Johnson Space Center.
Robert Crippen’s legacy extends beyond his contributions to the space program. In 1995, an elementary school was named in his honor—Robert L. Crippen Elementary School in Porter, Texas. The school serves as a testament to his remarkable achievements and his roots in the small town that shaped his early years. Though Bob is retired, he continues to inspire young minds, occasionally checking in with students via Zoom to share his experiences and passion for space exploration. His story motivates a new generation to reach for the stars, just as he did.
Inspired by the Mercury Seven, who were all test pilots and four of whom were Naval Aviators, he resolved to follow in their footsteps. “Flying higher and faster sounded good to me.”

A Daughter’s Journey to Honor Her Father’s Legacy
Merrill’s Marauders was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and most significantly that they were the forerunners of the Army’s elite fighting unit the 75th Ranger Regiment.

BY LINDA CUNNINGHAM
Amidst the pines in this community, lives a woman with a secret she’s ready to share. Not of herself, but of her father’s battle in WWII. Linda Cunningham grew up trying to hear the whispers of her father’s confidential missions in Burma, but his PTSD, or shell shock as it was known then, was louder.
One day, while searching for Halloween costumes in the attic, she stumbled upon a diary from 1944… A memoir that would have been considered criminal at the time penned by her father during the war. What she initially interpreted as gruesome tales of survival—like eating “three rats”—was a coded reference to rations. Years later, her father finally agreed to share his story of being part of Merrill’s Marauders (the 5307th Composite Unit Provisional), leading to a profound collaboration that would unlock a valuable firsthand account of bravery and sacrifice. Those faint whispers were finally heard.
The catalyst for her first book happened in Lake Charles, Louisiana, after facing Hurricane Audrey. Through the chaos, she found her voice and used it to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing from the University of Houston, alongside a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education from McNeese State University.
Linda’s writing not only honors her father’s legacy but also sheds light on the often-overlooked perspectives of enlisted soldiers. The struggle of growing up with a father who had PTSD shaped her resilience, teaching her the importance of love amid hardship. The story unfolds in the pages of The Marauder and His Daughter: A Memoir from the 1944 Diary of MERRILL’S MARAUDER Larry W. Stephenson
As she works on a screenplay to adapt her father’s story, she emphasizes the need for accuracy and authenticity. Through her journey, she inspires others to face their storms and turn them into stories of triumph, proving miracles can emerge.
STRENGTHENING TEXAS TIES WITH NEW BOURBON LINE
Cole Hauser
ARTICLE BY ERICA HERNANDEZ
PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUDREY HALL
“I get along well with your values and your beliefs down here.”
On the big screen, Cole Hauser is best known for his role as bad boy cowboy Rip Wheeler on the hit Western drama, Yellowstone. The show follows the turbulent saga of the Dutton family ranching empire as they defend their way of life at all costs, with Cole’s character often leading the charge. But off screen, Cole is more than an actor. He’s a coffee and bourbon connoisseur who is expanding his rugged brand into Texas. Recently, he’s helped launch a new bourbon whiskey that pays homage to generations of working cowboys.
Dubbed Lazy K Bar, the award-winning straight bourbon whiskey once available only in Montana, the setting for Yellowstone, is now available to Texas whiskey lovers and fans of the show.
“There's a big bourbon culture here,” Cole said. “We appreciate that, love it and look forward to sharing our bourbon with Texas.”
Lazy K Bar draws its name from the Lazy K Bar Ranch in Montana, one of the oldest cattle ranches in the state. The whiskey is a partnership between Cole, David Leuschen, owner of Lazy K Bar Ranch Montana, and Britt West, a 25-year beverage industry veteran and VP of Spirits at Gallo. Bourbon lovers can now pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar Whiskey in select Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Foods and other retailers across Texas.
Lazy K Bar is aged at least eight years in Kentucky inside charred new oak barrels to create a complex, memorable flavor. At 92 proof, it’s an incredibly
smooth mix of caramel, toffee and aged honey. Each sip is a sweet balance of malted grain and sweet spices that warms the body. Cole calls it “perfection” saying his favorite way to enjoy Lazy K Bar is neat, without mixers or additions.
“I like a smooth, easy finish,” Cole said. “One that doesn't kick you in the mouth. This one, really, I think we knocked it out of the park.”
Lazy K Bar is Cole’s second business foray into the beverage market in Texas. His first being Free Rein Coffee, a collaboration between several entrepreneurs and longtime San Angelo coffee roasters. Free Rein supports military charities and offers discounts to first responders, military, teachers and medical providers.
While Cole is most known for his Yellowstone role, Hollywood is in his blood. His great-grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the founders of Warner Brothers Studios. Two of his grandfathers were writers, his father, Wings Hauser, was an actor and his mother, Cass Warner, was the founder of the Warner Sisters production company. Cole has starred in dozens of films including Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting and, The Ritual Killer. He’s married to former actress Cynthia Daniel, his wife of 25 years, who starred in the 1990s teen drama Sweet Valley High. Together they have three children who can at times be seen together in Cole’s social media feeds.
Aside from sharing his coffee and bourbon, Cole says he enjoys spending time in Texas filming, visiting friends and family. His son attends Texas Christian University and, last year Cole appeared at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to visit with fans. The Yellowstone universe, which was created by Texas native Taylor Sheridan, has often used Texas as the backdrop for its storyline to unfold. “Texas has been kind of a second home,” Cole said. “I get along well with your values and your beliefs down here.”
With the final episodes of Yellowstone premiering next month, it’s a fitting time to pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar, settle in with a glass and enjoy the show. Cole laughed at the idea and suggested fans might need more than a glass.
“I hope they drink the whole season with Lazy K Bar,” he said. “You know, it's an emotional season and they might need a little bourbon.”
The final episodes of Yellowstone will air on Paramount Network on November 10, 2024, at 7PM.

Legacy Kailee’s Lifesaving
HOW ONE FAMILY TURNED TRAGEDY INTO A MISSION TO SAVE LIVES
Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, and for the Mills family, that nightmare became reality when their 16-year-old daughter, Kailee, lost her life in a tragic car accident. In the days following her passing, they were consumed with grief, searching for answers to the agonizing question, “Why did this happen?” In those devastating days, David Mills, Kailee's father, uncovered a startling fact—car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers and people aged 1 to 54.
Just days after the accident, David stood at her roadside memorial, speaking to her friends who had gathered in prayer. In that moment, he felt a powerful calling to raise awareness about the importance of seat belt safety. The thought of preventing just one family from enduring this heartbreak fueled his mission.
As the Mills family sought ways to honor Kailee’s memory, David was shocked to discover that no awareness ribbon for car crash prevention existed. Determined, he created one himself. The ribbon quickly gained traction, and soon people all over were requesting Kailee’s ribbon to display on their vehicles. The family was overwhelmed by the support they received from friends, family, and the community. They knew they had to turn this outpouring of love into action.
Thus, the Kailee Mills Foundation was born. Its mission: to raise awareness about seat belt safety and provide support to families affected by similar tragedies. The foundation organizes events and runs social media campaigns. One of their most impactful initiatives is their school programs, now in all 50 states, which educate students about seat belt safety and encourage them to be advocates for change. At a safety conference, a Harris County Deputy shared how his daughter insisted he buckle up, reminding him of Kailee’s story. As they were leaving their neighborhood, she said, “Daddy, you need to buckle up. At school, I learned about a girl named Kailee who didn’t buckle up near her neighborhood.” He now always wears his seat belt, grateful for the lesson she learned. The message is simple yet powerful: “Buckle Up, Someone Loves You.”
Seven years later, the foundation has donated over a million dollars in family assistance and scholarships, and they continue to hear stories of lives saved by their message. What began as a family’s effort to prevent one tragedy has grown into a global movement, with Kailee’s legacy touching lives and making roads safer across the world.
A JOURNEY OF Transformation
DR. NOEL BOYD’S INSPIRING PATH TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESS
In December 2020, Dr. Noel Boyd rolled up her sleeve for her first COVID-19 vaccine, unaware that this would become her “before” picture – the quiet beginning of her transformation. Like so many, she wasn’t fond of keeping photos she didn’t like, but this one stayed, serving as a reminder of where she started. Over the next 3.5 years, Dr. Boyd’s path to weight loss would be filled with detours, bumps, and unexpected lessons. Though not a straight path, the curves of the journey were more than just a number on the scale. It was about growth, resilience, and reclaiming the joy of living.
After researching various dietary programs, recipes, workout regimens, and even supplements, Dr. Boyd combined her learnings into willpower to focus on understanding hunger levels and movement goals. By investing in her health, one pound at a time, she realized that her weight loss journey was about holistic health, not just the physical aspect. By transitioning emotional eating habits into non-edible serotonin
boosts (like a big hug), she noticed an overall change in her mental health and less frequent visits to the pantry. She also made hydration a priority by drinking plenty of water.
Dr. Boyd began making intentional, yet effective, changes to stay active. She started taking the stairs when given the option, parking farther from the store, and incorporating extra movements throughout the day, all to reach her 10,000-step daily goal. Now focused on maintaining the weight lost and the gained confidence, her clothes fit better and each outfit is accompanied by an Instagram-worthy accessory: a confident smile filled with pride and a new hunger for adventure. The small steps she’s taken have evolved into lasting lifestyle habits, transforming her journey to fully embrace life and find true happiness.
If you’re ready to start your weight loss journey, visit Dr. Boyd at Health in Progress to explore her personal insights and discover the right program for you.

THE PERFECT FALL TREAT
ACORN DONUT HOLES
ARTICLE BY MADELINE LEBLANC
As the vibrant colors of summer slowly yield to the warm and earthy hues of autumn, there’s a distinct charm in the air at the arrival of fall. It’s a season filled with the crisp rustling of leaves, cozy sweaters, and the promise of pumpkin-spiced everything. What better way to embrace the changing seasons than by indulging in a delightful treat that captures the essence of both summer’s sweetness and fall’s rich flavors?
My recipe for “Acorn Donut Holes” combines the light, airy sweetness of summer donuts with the warm, comforting tones of fall. Grab your ingredients and let’s get started!
Ingredients:
• Donut holes
• Melting chocolates
• Fall sprinkles
• Pretzels
Instructions:
1. Pour your fall sprinkles into a small bowl for dipping. Lay wax paper down.
2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the melting chocolates in the microwave, about 15-20 seconds. Carefully watch to ensure they don’t burn.
3. Dip the top of each donut hole into the melted chocolate, covering about halfway down the donut.
4. After dipping, immediately dip the chocolate-covered portion of the donut hole into the bowl of sprinkles, coating it with the fall sprinkles.
5. Insert a pretzel into the top of the “acorn” to create the acorn stem.
6. Carefully place the decorated acorn donut holes on the wax paper to let them cool and allow the chocolate to set.
7. Once the chocolate has hardened, your acorn donut holes are ready to enjoy!
These delightful treats are perfect for fall and make for a fun and tasty dessert or snack. Enjoy!
