Welcome, Fall!
As the leaves burst into a tapestry of colors and the crisp weather invites us to embrace cozy comforts, it’s time to celebrate the abundance of the harvest season! October isn’t just about delicious treats. It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a chance for all of us to come together and support an important cause while indulging in all the delightful flavors this season has to offer.
In this season of gratitude, we reflect on our many blessings and the beauty around us. Thanksgiving embodies the spirit of giving thanks, reminding us to cherish moments with our loved ones and engage meaningfully with our community. While pursuing our ambitions and hitting our goals is important, we mustn't forget to be present and appreciate those who have supported us along the way. True fulfillment comes from within and from embracing our authentic selves, not from external possessions or accolades.
Personally, we are thankful for the simple joys—a warm cup of cider shared with friends, laughter around the dinner table, and the love that fills our hearts. These moments remind us of what truly matters in life.
Our November issue will shine a spotlight on stories of gathering, gratitude, and giving back to our community. We are incredibly grateful for the residents and businesses that support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city such a vibrant place to live. A special thank you goes to our advertising partners, whose support brings this magazine right to your doorstep each month. They help us share inspiring stories and the good news of our community directly with you.
As we prepare to gather with our loved ones this holiday season, let’s take a moment to reflect on what makes life truly meaningful and appreciate the blessings that surround us.
Wishing you and your family abundant blessings this fall and a heartfelt Veterans Day.

U.S. Navy veteran offers security for government buildings through partnership with innovative Danish company
Rob Huffman’s resume was already full when a Facebook post caught his eye and profoundly changed his professional trajectory. A 13-year veteran of the U.S. Navy where he specialized in bio-medical electronics, Rob’s career also includes 20+ years in the semiconductor industry, experience in product development, product management, construction management and more.
In 2003, he founded Curbs Gone Wild, a company that builds concrete curbing, patios, and other hardscapes. In February 2022, Rob retired from his corporate job to help Curbs Gone Wild reach its full potential.
In August 2023, he saw the Facebook post that would change everything. It was from KantDesign, a Danish company that uses machines called Scandi Curb to install large commercial curbs into landscape designs throughout Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
“I told Kim Pedersen (founder of KantDesign) I would like to acquire the rights to manufacture and sell these machines in the U.S,” he says.
Rob had a new engine sourced and retrofitted into the ScandiCurb machines, and they are now approved for use in the U.S. Rob is currently the sole distributor of the machines in all of North America.
The ScandiCurb machines enable the creation of curving, undulating concrete structures easier to
install and more durable than building with individual pavers and they allow much more design flexibility than anything else available in this country.
Rob envisions using ScandiCurb machines for security barrier installations around buildings. “From my time in the military, I know the value of security. These barriers will stop trucks and cars and protect people. I want to give back and also help elevate outdoor spaces.”
Rob is in talks with representatives from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Department of Labor and other agencies. “The U.S. government is often searching for ways to increase security on old buildings, especially solutions that add functionality and a pleasing aesthetic.”
ScandiCurb machines also create all-in-one decorative benches, planters, bike racks, and more.
Rob is opening a manufacturing facility in Rockville with plans for a warehouse and distribution center. He recently had a booth at the American Society of Landscape Architects expo in Washington, DC, and often meets with general contractors and others. “We are also in the process of getting patents,” he adds, “as we get the word out about the vast capabilities of these machines.”

Weaving Art Into Life as a Tool to Solve Problems
ARTICLE BY MANUELLA HANCOCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA WALLACH
For 14 years, Story Tapestries has been a collaborator in Montgomery County, offering arts programming to all ages. “Art and creativity are an integral part of life; how we facilitate problem-solving,” says Arianna Ross, the founder and director of the organization.
“Something as small as a word of encouragement or a smile can make a difference.”
Story Tapestries recognizes the complexities of diverse communities and designs programs that are customized to address barriers, including economics, mental health, accessibility, and culture. Their work reaches a wide variety of people. For example, through a digital literacy class, an unhoused man builds confidence and pursues job opportunities. In an early childhood setting, a child creates art from their mistakes and celebrates learning differences. An educator, through a training program, can support students facing trauma.
Participants, artists, and volunteers love the chance to uplift their spirit and integrate the arts into their daily lives. “We could show data and statistics about the positive outcomes of our programming, but what really matters is the cycle of engagement, giving, and giving back that we foster,” says Ross.
Getting involved in the programs isn’t limited to professional artists. Volunteers also organize book and art supply drives, and other uses of their time, talent, and treasure. Notably, the Love Notes program involves volunteers writing encouraging notes to program participants to give them a boost. According to Ross, “Something as small as a word of encouragement or a smile can make a difference.”
Story Tapestries has the tools and community connections to reach people in need of support, their educators, and their families with a unique set of resources and services that engage participants in arts activities to boost learning and increase cultural capital. Ultimately, it helps participants overcome barriers while also increasing an important ingredient in their daily lives: joy.

MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAY DECORATING BRINGS OUT OUR CHILD-LIKE SPIRIT
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
With family traditions like baking cookies and picking out a Christmas tree that help us get into the holiday spirit, there is nothing better than having your house or business come to life with colorful twinkling lights and other magical decorations.
When Covid-19 prevented installers from entering homes and businesses, it provided a major life lesson that we should appreciate how much these time-honored traditions mean to families and communities.
That’s why as the September leaves first begin to fall, “Christmas Guys” from two leading companies, Christmas Décor by Backyard Creations and American Christmas LLC, start gearing up for Christmas and other winter holidays.
Dan Casterella, the president and CEO of 57-year-old American Christmas LLC, has been a professional “Christmas Guy” for 23 years. His passion for the holidays began in high school while decorating homes in upstate New York. He began working for American Christmas in college, and never left. He still appreciates the backstage view of iconic locations like Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, and Radio City Music Hall. The company has also supplied holiday decorations for popular TV shows, including Saturday Night Live.
The company has two locations – its New York headquarters in Mount Vernon, and the MidAtlantic satellite office in Jessup, MD. Locally, they provide decorations for Bethesda Row, the Merriweather District, and Pike & Rose.
“I always want to have new and innovative products to help evolve our industry,” Casterella explains. “I still go out on location to see our installations come to life. To walk around the city
in mid-December and see the beauty of all the decorations we put up and manage is still the number one aspect of this that I enjoy.”
Casterella’s crew begin installing decorations in mid-September, and continue until early December, so they remain in place from four to 10 weeks. Everyone in the holiday decorating business agrees that’s it’s never too early to start planning.
“Every day in December I go to the job sites,” he says, “and every tree we put up someone has taken a photo of, which I appreciate. Our company slogan is: “We make people happy!”
While American Christmas primarily focuses on commercial decorating, he has sage advice for homeowners who want their homes to sparkle during the holidays. “Follow the architecture of your home instead of competing with it,” he says. “Think of your home as a blank slate from the frame of the roof line, and the architecture will dictate where the Christmas lights go.”
He adds that it’s best to “have some fun and find out what your neighbors are doing. You can be a bit competitive, but put up decorations that make sense for your community.” Also, if there is a front entrance, he loves putting up a Nutcracker on each side of the door. Whether its four feet or nine feet, it adds to the appeal.
Casterella remembers saving his birthday and Christmas money to help buy decorations, then putting up a big Christmas display outside of his house with his dad and grandpa.
“Now, I’m doing the same with my 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. They each get their own Christmas tree and I help them decorate. You could say my life’s work is part of my destiny.”
“To walk around the city and see the beauty of all the decorations we put up and manage is still the number one aspect of this that I enjoy.” — Dan Casterella, CEO of American Christmas LLC
“It’s the time of year when people are looking for something that will make them feel good.” Stephen Braun, head of Christmas Décor by Backyard Creations.
CREATIONS — FROM SWIMMING POOL DREAMS TO HOLIDAY
Stephen Braun, the owner of Christmas Décor by Backyard Creations in Frederick, and a formidable “Christmas Guy,” has been helping families enjoy summer fun by building in-ground backyard pools for many years.
But shortly after the pandemic struck, a friend encouraged him to expand his seasonal business into holiday décor, and five years ago he took the plunge; becoming a franchise of Christmas Décor of Dallas. His territory includes Germantown and parts of Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Washington counties.
The goal was to generate revenue during the off season when the weather changes to keep his technicians working full-time. The plan worked and he has never looked back.
“When you’re building a swimming pool it involves a long process, and sometimes homeowners get anxious during the design through to completed construction. But holiday decorating at someone’s house typically takes hours,” Braun explains.
“Even an extensive job only takes a day or a day and a half. We have products without nails that don’t damage the gutters or their roofs,” he says. “We have also started doing commercial jobs in Frederick, and we are expanding that aspect of our business.”
Happy repeat customers often come outside with plates of homemade cookies and mugs of hot chocolate or coffee. They are “all smiles during the set up.”
His clients appreciate the “all-inclusive service” his company provides. “We work with the customer to design what they want, install well-engineered products, correct problems quickly, and take it all down to haul away.”
Braun says that many of his customers are in their fifth year having his company install their home decorations because “they don’t have to lift
a finger, and we bring it back year after year. It’s the time of year when people are looking for something that will make them feel good and with all the chaos of the holidays it’s one less thing for them to worry about.”
He adds that those customers who don’t come back usually have sold the house and moved, and often the new owners love what was done previously and eventually become happy new clients.
“There is a client who loved holding a block party for Christmas, but when her husband passed away and Covid began, she was reluctant to celebrate. She decided to move forward and when her neighbors shared with her how much they loved what she had done for the neighborhood, she continues the tradition today.”
“Most people want to flip the switch during Thanksgiving weekend, so that is a high drama day,” Braun says. “We have had people call us as early as January 1, all the way up to four days before Christmas. We’ve grown significantly each year since we started and we expect this year to be even bigger.”
Braun admits that since childhood, he has been extremely fond of the holiday season. “Personally, the lights shining in children’s eyes has always brought out the kid in me. I have heart-warming memories of six-foot-tall snowflakes twinkling at us; it’s all about a happy and joyous time, and it never ceases to delight me.”

DR. IANESSA HUMBERT IS DEDICATED TO HELPING PATIENTS WITH SWALLOWING ISSUES ENJOY THEIR FOOD CHOICES
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
By Penumbra Photos
“Understanding your body translates to eating delicious and nutritious foods.” — Dr. Ianessa Humbert.
World-renowned scientist, educator, and speech-language pathologist Dr. Ianessa Humbert realized the importance of providing extraordinary care for children and adults with dysphagia, also known as swallowing impairments. As such, she has made it her life’s work for more than 20 years.
Her remarkable journey to change lives took her to Howard University and the National Institutes for Health, for her Ph.D., training in speech pathology. This was followed by a career in academia, including a faculty position at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, all focused on the study and treatment of swallowing and swallowing disorders.
Humbert has given more than 400 speeches about the topic worldwide and soon realized that it’s a huge global problem. The problems Humbert treats include coughing and gagging when patients eat, food getting stuck in their throat, pills being difficult to swallow, eating in social settings, and much more.
Her work spans the area of swallowing disorders, which has been managed by speech pathologists since the late 1980s. Humbert explains that there was previously no rehabilitation. If patients had swallowing-oriented complaints, they were given a feeding tube or “disgusting thickened liquids.”
Instead, Humbert has patients bring in the foods they want to eat and she and her team come up with personalized plans to reach their goals. It’s a very different approach than current practices in hospitals and nursing homes.
“ Swallowing Wellness, our new state-of-the-art facility in Bethesda, MD, is the world’s first outpatient center that provides care for infants, children, and adults with swallowing disorders,” explains Humbert. “I built my reputation by being focused solely on swallowing. Understanding your body translates to eating delicious and nutritious foods.”
“We are highly-trained specialists who take time to understand your swallowing problem so you can understand your options. Our primary goal is to restore eating and drinking abilities.”
Before her outpatient center opened its doors, Humbert said the only place patients could get a swallowing X-ray was in a hospital, which meant long waits for appointments.
“We can improve family bonding by working with children, “she says. “Parents who have issues feeding their young children are elated when they receive our help.”
Now, patients are urged to go to the website or call the office for an in-person or virtual consultation so their problems can
be assessed and a personalized, food-oriented treatment plan can be developed.
She is proud to have established the Swallowing Wellness Foundation, a non-profit organization helping those who need treatment but cannot afford their care, by covering services that insurance does not pay for.
Humbert believes this is the right time for Swallowing Wellness. “It’s now or never,” she says. “Health care is changing, and people want personalized, and customized care. People are tired of being warehoused in hospitals.”
She added “When people don’t feel seen as human beings, their quality of life goes down. We help people on a 1-1 basis while we raise awareness around the world so more people are treated fairly and hospitals recognize what we do.”
Humbert is highly concerned that frequently hospital patients do not get X-rays to examine the extent of their medical needs, the result is dehydration, malnutrition, and pneumonia, and before Swallowing Wellness, there was no community option for continued care.
The primary swallowing problem is aspiration into the trachea and lungs or when food gets stuck. There are also phobias in which patients won’t swallow pills, while others can’t get enough nutrition after cancer treatment, and reflux is a rapidly growing issue that can impact someone’s molars and result in chewing problems.
With the winter holidays around the corner, many of her patients feel isolated when they can’t partake in important social gatherings with family and friends.
Humbert says she truly feels “exhilarated and fulfilled,” by the positive feedback she receives from her patients.
“I can’t forget a patient who told me ‘I had a stroke, so I thought I would never be able to toast my daughter at her wedding because taking a sip was so hard.’ But we made it possible,” Humbert says. “We are impacting lives in ways I never thought and it warms me all over.”

OLUSINA B. ADEBAYO MPA Executive Director
ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD
Rainbow Place Shelter is an emergency shelter for women located in an annex of the Rockville Presbyterian Church in Rockville. It’s open from November 1st – March 31st, where guests receive a warm, safe place to sleep, hot dinners, breakfasts, bag lunches, showers, laundry facilities, access to case management, and referrals to local social service and treatment programs.
“A big part of our mission is to restore dignity to our guests and recognize their humanity,” says Olusina Adebayo, or Olu, the executive director of Rainbow Place. He also notices that there’s been an increased number of “the working poor” coming to the shelter –women who have nine-to-five jobs but because of the high cost of living in the county, can’t afford to rent.
Olu’s hope is that the space allows these women to get back on their feet, save money and get help through the various services the county offers to be able to rent. Additionally, Rainbow Place offers a joint program with Edward Jones to offer guests financial literacy classes. Rainbow Place is also expanding its services in response to studies that show young people from the ages of 18 to 24 are a very underserved demographic. The executive director and board members of Rainbow Place hope by expanding they can help this group. They are working to establish the first 24-hour, seven days a week hub in Gaithersburg to serve 30 young people and provide mental health services, public health services, education, and legal aid for those who need it.
Rodney Foster’s adventure as the founder of Edelheiss Wine began during a 2011 vacation in St. Moritz, Switzerland, near the end of the annual Snow Polo World Cup.
A colleague recommended that Foster check out Gluhwein, and being the innovative businessman that he is, immediately wanted to bring his positive experience back to the U.S.
The formula was sent to a vineyard in Germany, and in 2015 he created his own organic version of the red wine, with cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, notes of fresh peach brandy, and lemon, for a harmoniously sweet and full-bodied final product.
The fruit picked for the wine is selected from specific parcels in a fifth-generation family-owned vineyard. The nearly 70 year-old vines provide premium fruit for Edelheiss Wine.
“It’s something different that most people have never had before,” Foster ,a Washington, D.C. native, explains. “It’s not too sweet and it’s not too dry.”
Though the company has grown and evolved over the last 10 years, its wine continues to offer an exhilarating taste. The elite organic product line has expanded to include a red wine, a sparkling white wine, and a rosé. In the future, Foster plans to add a canned red wine with bubbles to the mix.
He is passionate and proud of his company’s commitment to quality and the superior taste of his wines.
“I’m from Washington D.C. where people want to be healthy,” he says of his commitment to using the purest organic ingredients. “I know that increasingly more people are watching what they put in their bodies.”
Foster is an African American entrepreneur, who has a stellar reputation as a reality TV celebrity on Lifetime Channel’s Marrying Millions, He notes that the wine business is well aligned with his other endeavors, including fashion.
“I want my wine product line to represent me,” he says. “I want people to have the experience of a luxury brand at an affordable price.”
His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs comes from years of experience. “You need to always have faith in your brand. To this day, I am still being told no, but you can never give up. You need to work hard and keep your determination.”
The wine business has been tumultuous at times, but Foster’s dedication has never waned. “I have a vision of where I see the product line and the business heading. I believe in my brand, and I have faith!”

MISS MOLLY DAZZLE TAKES PARTY ENTERTAINMENT TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF FUN FOR KIDS AND ADULTS.
Miss Molly Dazzle plays with fire for a living. Her Instagram profile says it all: “I entertain people with crazy tricks.”
As the founder of Dazzling Star Entertainment, she produces circus acts for parties, school events and camps, and “everything in between,” as she puts it.
In addition to hula hooping ten rings at once, she also juggles, and stilt walks, but her favorite medium is fire.
“I’m in it for joy, “she says. “I love seeing the audience’s faces light up as they experience something new and exciting.”
Recently Miss Molly Dazzle directed and performed in a circus show with four other performers at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY.
“I performed my 25-minute Daredevil and Comedy Fire Show for the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival for two days with three shows each night. I was able to connect with the large audience and perform my favorite acts,” she recalls.
Her interest in performing arts started, however, with something not quite as daredevilish.
A friend introduced her to hula hooping 10 years ago, and after performing on stage, she decided to make a career out of it at fairs and in large theatres.
Today, she continues to push herself to improve and learn new skills, while custom-fitting her act to her clients’ events.
Those acts often include a range of attractions, from glamorous showgirls in gold lame and feathers to clowns for the ultimate kid’s backyard bash and circus show!
Miss Molly Dazzle works closely with her clients to bring their visions of an event to fruition. She suggests booking your entertainment as soon as possible to allow time to flesh out your ideas and making a vision board by looking at photos on Instagram or Pinterest. check out-@Missmollydazzle, Missmollydazzle.com or Dazzling-star.com
