Welcome to Our Thankful Issue!

As we step into November, a month synonymous with gratitude, I'm reminded of a thought that has deeply resonated with me for a while: “If you went back and fixed all the mistakes you’ve ever made, you would erase yourself.” When I first read this quote, I felt confused; it was as if I was being invited to live with regret. But the more I reflected on it, the more I was able to see the truth and beauty behind it.

Life isn’t about avoiding mistakes or regretting choices. It's about understanding that those so-called “mistakes” are experiences that take us to where we are, to who we are. They shape, mold, and guide us to who we are truly meant to be. Every choice, even those we wish we could redo, has led us to this moment, right here and now.

There is great power in embracing our imperfections and seeing our past decisions not as wrong turns, but as necessary steps on our beautiful journey called life. Our minds can often trick us into thinking that another direction would have been smoother or more fulfilling. It’s natural to feel this way. When this happens, it’s important to remember that the other path is just a story that we tell ourselves and not the reality we are in.

When we let go of the idea of "wrong decisions," life becomes a little lighter, a little more hopeful. We start to realize that we are exactly where we need to be, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. We are able to recognize the gifts around us. Acknowledging these gifts is what allows us to shift our mindset from having made the “wrong” decision to appreciating what our choices have given us: the lessons, the people, the experiences.

This month, as we celebrate thankfulness, I invite you to join me in being grateful for every experience — the highs and the lows, the moments of doubt, and the ones filled with joy. Let’s be thankful for the lessons learned, the growth experienced, and the unique path that each of us has walked.

Let’s embrace our imperfections with open hearts. Let’s be thankful for the journey, and most importantly, for the people we become along the way.

From my heart to yours,

November 2024

For The Love of Horses

Redefining Thanksgiving with Hearts Alive Horse Rescue

Dr. Alice Whitfield-Hammer's journey with Hearts Alive Horse Rescue ( havhorserescue.org) is a touching tale of love, dedication, and second chances. After reconnecting with her high school sweetheart, David Hammer, after 56 years, Alice embarked on a new adventure that would fulfill her lifelong dream of rescuing and caring for horses.

THE BIRTH OF HEARTS ALIVE HORSE RESCUE

The story began when Alice and David met Christy Stevens, the Executive Director of Hearts Alive Village, an animal rescue in Las Vegas. This encounter sparked a collaboration that led to the creation of Hearts Alive Horse Rescue.  “It was divine intervention because both of us have the same philosophy. If there is an animal in need - we are there,” explains Alice.

A SANCTUARY FOR HORSES IN NEED

Hearts Alive Horse Rescue operates on 15 acres off Kyle Canyon Road in Las Vegas. The facility provides a safe haven for horses whose owners can no longer care for them due to financial hardships, longterm illness, or death.

RESCUE AND REHABILITATION

The rescue focuses on:

• Accepting horses from owners who can no longer care for them

• Providing a permanent home for non-adoptable horses

• Offering rehabilitation and training for adoptable horses

PREMIER FACILITIES

The rescue boasts impressive amenities:

• A barn with individual stalls, each with its own turnout

• Hot and cold showers for the horses

• Medical sections for veterinary evaluation and isolation

• A full-time trainer on staff

Dr. Alice Whitfield-Hammer and David Hammer
“With a horse’s grace comes astonishing strength. Horses are beauty and beast indivisible. Their strength and stamina have pulled humans through history.” - Saying as remembered by Alice

THE IMPACT OF COMPASSION

Dr. Whitfield-Hammer personally writes to every donor, sponsor, and adopter, creating a sense of community and gratitude. The rescue has touched many lives, as evidenced by the heartfelt messages from horse owners who have entrusted their beloved animals to Hearts Alive Horse Rescue.

STORIES OF GRATITUDE

• Scarlet and Alexa's owner, facing physical challenges, found solace in the rescue's commitment to care for his mares.

• Barbie's owner discovered a "paradise" where her horse could live out her days in peace, free from riding obligations.

A NEW MEANING OF THANKSGIVING

For Dr. Whitfield-Hammer, Thanksgiving has taken on a new significance. It's no longer just about pilgrims and turkeys, but about giving thanks for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of horses and their owners. Hearts Alive Horse Rescue illustrates the power of compassion and being thankful for kindness and the bond between humans and horses.

HOW ATTORNEY RICHARD HARRIS COMBINES LEGAL EXPERTISE WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE, CREATING LASTING IMPACT THROUGH GENEROSITY AND COMPASSION

With a heart for justice and a hand for community, Richard Harris, founding partner of Richard Harris Law Firm, has been a fixture in Las Vegas's legal landscape since 1980. Beyond his impressive career as a personal injury attorney, Harris has cultivated a legacy of community service that stems from a deeprooted sense of gratitude.

"Giving back was taught to me from a young age," Harris reflects. "My dad was the hardest worker I've ever known, but he always found time to volunteer and serve others. My mom had the biggest heart and was a living angel. I miss them both, but their examples live on."

This early lesson in gratitude has shaped Harris' approach to both his legal practice and community engagement. The Richard Harris Law Firm has become known not just for its expertise in personal injury law, but for its commitment to social responsibility.

"As an injury law firm, every single one of our clients has been hurt or lost a loved one. It's a heavy responsibility to help people get through difficult times," Harris explains. "But as challenging as that is, there are so many people in the world who suffer from other things, such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, being the victim of crime, and on and on. If we can help take away some of these burdens whether from social injustice, or an accident, we've made a difference."

CONTINUED >

Among the firm's notable initiatives are Project Backpack, their association with the Nevada Wheelchair Foundation, and support for Adam's Place Camp Cope, which helps families through the grieving process. These projects reflect Harris's belief that community work and legal practice are intrinsically linked.

"It's really one and the same," he says. "Fortunately, we have a hardworking internal marketing team whose efforts are equally focused on business development and community outreach. In fact, our most effective marketing showcases how much we do for the communities we serve."

For Harris, gratitude is not just a personal philosophy but a professional necessity. "When you express and practice gratitude, you shift the focus from what's lacking to what you have," he observes. "I've been humbled by many of my permanently injured clients with life-altering conditions who tell me it could have been worse. What a lesson in gratitude and resilience."

As he reflects on his career and community involvement, Harris expresses thankfulness for his family and the opportunity to make a difference. "I'm grateful for my kids and grandkids, good health, and countless friendships with lawyers, staff, and others trying to make the world a better place."

In a profession often associated with adversarial relationships, Richard Harris stands out as a defender of gratitude and community spirit. His approach to law and life serves as a reminder that even in challenging circumstances, there is always something to be thankful for – and always an opportunity to give back.

THANKFUL FOR BRAIN HEALTH

Embracing simple lifestyle changes to enhance brain function and reduce the risk of cognitive decline

Of the 6.9 million Americans currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, nearly two-thirds are women – a staggering 4.9 million women. Scientists do not fully understand why women are more likely to develop the disease than men, but we do know that everything from genetics to biology and societal norms play a role. To further understand gender disparity in Alzheimer’s, Cleveland Clinic partnered with Alzheimer’s advocate Maria Shriver to open The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) Prevention and Research Center at Cleveland Clinic in 2020.

Building on the latest science of prevention, this first-of-its-kind program based right here in Las Vegas inside Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health (clevelandclinic.org/ WAMprevention) utilizes a woman’s medical history, biological risks, habits, mood, and memory to create a customized, sustainable plan for lifestyle modifications that can proactively reduce her individualized risk for Alzheimer’s.

One of our ongoing initiatives is investigating how women’s adherence to our lifestyle recommendations, impacts outcomes like blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as health issues such as sleep problems and low mood. Through research, we hope data collected will further underscore the merits of prevention via risk reduction.

Our work couldn’t come at a more important time. In August, the Lancet Commission on dementia–a group of experts that reviews scientific evidence and makes recommendations on how dementia may be prevented–published new guidance, adding two new modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer’s: untreated vision loss and high cholesterol. These additions now bring the list of modifiable risk factors to 14, suggesting that up to 45 percent of Alzheimer’s cases could be prevented, if addressed appropriately. When our WAM Prevention and Research Center opened in 2020, the Lancet’s number was only 33 percent.

It is our hope that one day, prevention will become as widely accepted an approach in brain health as in heart disease. Until then, it is imperative women understand their increased risk and take proactive steps to protect their brain health. Changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease start 20 years before the onset of symptoms, so it is never too early to start prioritizing your brain health. Here is an easy way to get started:

• Stay sharp: The best way to work on your memory is to keep learning and challenging yourself. Take a class. Learn a new language or instrument. Listen to a podcast and discuss it with friends. The key is that you must be learning, putting in the effort, and not doing something that is too easy.

• Exercise regularly: Exercise has both immediate and long-term brain benefits, from increasing brain chemistry that supports the health of brain cells to reducing factors such as chronic bodily inflammation that can be harmful for the brain. Exercise also has indirect brain benefits, such as improving mood and sleep, reducing stress, supporting heart health, increasing opportunities to socialize, and lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risk.

• The exercise goal for long-term brain health is at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week. For healthy adults, more

"OUR WORK COULDN’T COME AT A MORE IMPORTANT TIME... IT IS OUR HOPE THAT ONE DAY, PREVENTION WILL BECOME AS WIDELY ACCEPTED AN APPROACH IN BRAIN HEALTH AS IN HEART DISEASE."

is better, so you could bump this up to 300 minutes, and if you are under the age of 60, high intensity interval training is best for supporting healthy brain function.

• Get sufficient sleep: Poor sleep can have immediate, as well as cumulative, negative impacts on an individual’s brain functioning. Conversely, seven to eight continuous hours of sleep improves mood, sharpens intellect and consolidates new memories for long-term storage. Sleep also gives our brains the chance to clear debris, including beta amyloid, a protein that can cluster and clump together to form Alzheimer's plaque.

• Eat a well-balanced diet: Research shows that a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fish,

whole grains, leafy green vegetables, olives and nuts helps maintain brain health and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Try to minimize red meat, whole-fat cheese, sweets, butter, fried foods, and alcohol.

Dr. Jessica Caldwell is a neuropsychologist and director of the Women's Alzheimer's Movement Prevention and Research Center at Cleveland Clinic. She holds appointments as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.

Dr. Caldwell is passionate about women’s Alzheimer’s research, helping women reduce Alzheimer’s risks, and bringing the risk reduction message to more women.

Jessica Vargas' journey of healing and giving back

As Veteran's Day approaches, it's a fitting time to spotlight Jessica Vargas, a local Marine Corps veteran and photographer. Her journey embodies the resilience and spirit of service that defines America's military community.

Vargas enlisted in the Marines after 9/11, serving from 2001 to 2005. Her experiences during two deployments to Iraq in 2003 and 2004 left an indelible mark on her life. "My two back-to-back deployments impacted my life forever," Vargas reflects. "They left an imprint on my soul that has taken years to heal."

Upon returning to civilian life, Jess faced the challenges of post-traumatic stress disorder. However, she discovered a path to healing and new purpose through art and photography. A photography course at the College of Southern Nevada opened her eyes to a new world of creative expression.

"Photography plays a strong role in my life," Jess explains. "It has taught me to look at the beauty our world offers, it has helped me appreciate light. I love experiencing the magic of the golden hour."

Today, Jessica runs Jess V Art ( jess-v.art), offering fine art photography prints and freelance photography services. Her work goes beyond aesthetics; it's a powerful medium for storytelling and advocacy. Her "Lux &

Oscurita" (Light and Darkness) collection raises awareness about issues affecting veterans, including traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress, and suicide.

"I have merged both my passion for photography and my activism in the veteran community," Vargas says. This commitment to giving back is encapsulated in her motto: "Art That Gives Back."

Jess’s military experience continues to shape her perspective and work. "I'm grateful for our military and veteran community," she shares. "The camaraderie that exists in our sisterhood and brotherhood is powerful. There's an unspoken bond that connects us on a deep spiritual level."

As we approach Veteran's Day, Jess's story reminds us of the importance of supporting and honoring our veterans. Her journey from combat to creativity exemplifies the strength and resilience of those who have served.

Looking ahead, Vargas is working on a book titled "Warrior," inspired by her heritage, family, and military service. "I dedicate this book to my mother 'La Guerrera,' my family, my ancestors, my military brothers and sisters, to the fallen, and to those who fight for freedom," she says.

This Veteran's Day, as we express our gratitude for those who have served, let Jessica Vargas' story inspire us to recognize the ongoing struggles many veterans face and the power of art and community in healing.

In a world that can feel divided, the spirit of giving and community shines bright during the holiday season. As families gather, one tradition brings people together to celebrate life, honor the departed, and strengthen community bonds: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This colorful Mexican holiday, which honors loved ones who have passed, has become a symbol for unity and generosity in communities worldwide.

Locally, Palm Mortuaries has embraced this cultural celebration, creating an opportunity for community connection. Their annual Día de los Muertos festivals bring together thousands of residents to share in the beauty of remembrance, offering a space for collective healing where strangers become neighbors as they decorate altars, enjoy traditional foods, and participate in cultural activities.

The festivals serve as a reminder that giving extends beyond material gifts, providing a platform for shared experiences and creating a sense of belonging. As attendees come together to honor their ancestors, they create new connections and strengthen existing ones, weaving a tighter community fabric.

Through these celebrations, Palm Mortuaries reminds us how businesses can play a vital role in nurturing community spirit. By welcoming everyone, they've created a tradition that honors the past while building more connected and compassionate future.
