Be Where Your Feet Are
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving is about more than turkey and pie (though they certainly help!). It’s about being present, spending time with the people we love, and giving back in meaningful ways. While ambition and goal-setting are important, sometimes we forget to pause, enjoy the ride, and appreciate the moment.
At a recent entrepreneurship conference, I had the pleasure of hearing Molly Fletcher—sports agent turned keynote speaker—deliver a fantastic reminder. She said, “Be where your feet are.” With our endless to-do lists buzzing in our heads, staying present feels like a challenge, but it’s the key to focusing on what’s truly important.
Our November issue is all about gratitude and giving back to the community. We’re incredibly thankful for the residents and businesses in the Somerset Hills who support countless amazing organizations. Their generosity makes this town as vibrant and wonderful as it is.
Of course, a big thank you goes out to our advertising partners, who help bring this magazine to your doorstep every month. Their support keeps the stories flowing, and we couldn’t do it without them!
As we prepare to gather with our loved ones this holiday season, let’s carve out some time (in between stuffing and pumpkin pie) to think about what really makes life meaningful. Reflect on those little moments of joy, those big blessings, and maybe even how we can pay it forward.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season full of gratitude, laughter, and lots of leftovers.

Real talk!
Marie Young Sales Associate
September has been quite a month for the housing market Here’s the recap: The Fed dropped its rate 50 basis points for the first time since March of 2020. Mortgage rates actually dropped below 6% prior to the cut in anticipation, and we are following the longer term impact closely.
Bernards Twp , aka Basking Ridge, was the fourth “hottest” zip code in the entire US as noted by realtor.com. Couple this with the lack of available homes, and our market remains strong! We are starting to see the impact of the new commission related regulations, now in effect for almost two months
Finally, I continue to advise sellers to avoid “aspirational pricing” and instead price their homes realistically to attract the greatest number of buyers. The chart below supports this, as homes priced well saw sales at or above ask, while those priced above market, remain unsold.
Please call if you'd like to discuss how this market affects the value of your home, the latest real estate values in your immediate area, and tips for moving, even if not this year!

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season
The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon ginger
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 2 eggs
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.
3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.
4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.
5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.
7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.
8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

The Creative Women’s Showcase

The Creative Women’s Showcase, set to take place at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, opening November 1st, is much more than just an art exhibition. It is a testament to the power of community, creativity, and the unexpected journey that brought together a diverse group of women artists and entrepreneurs.
The November 1st opening, which runs from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., features a blend of art, entrepreneurship, and the stories behind the work, creating a unique space where creativity thrives in various forms. From the gallery showcasing traditional art forms to the studio area where artists and business owners
will sell their creations, this event promises to be a memorable experience for both participants and attendees.
AN ACCIDENTAL BEGINNING
Ilisa Zollenberg, the driving force behind the Creative Women’s Showcase, describes the event’s origin as an unexpected but fortuitous journey. “The art show happened by accident, which makes it kind of a cooler story,” she explains. “I’m an artist by trade,
but after having kids, I was searching for where my creative outlet would be now that I was balancing motherhood.”
Zollenberg, a Boston University School of Fine Arts graduate, initially explored various creative avenues, from freelance photography to a heat-pressing business. However, it was in designing custom blankets that she found her true artistic calling. “The blankets became more than just products—they became a medium for storytelling,” Zollenberg says. “People would come to me wanting to tell a story on their blankets, and it felt right to me for the first time in a long time.”

BUILDING A COMMUNITY
As Zollenberg sought new avenues to grow her network and share her work, she posted on local websites, inviting other women artists, crafters, and business owners to collaborate. The response was overwhelming. “In 12 hours, I received 60 responses,” she recalls. “I was like, ‘Wow, there must be a need for this.’”
Determined to understand each woman’s story and how their businesses could complement each other, Zollenberg personally interviewed every respondent. “It was amazing because they were so honest and shared so many things with me,” she says. “Art is a powerful vehicle for communication, and it comes in so many different ways. You don’t have to be a painter to be creative—you can be a writer, a chef, or an entrepreneur. Creativity is essential in all of those things.”
Among those who reached out was a board member from The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster. After meeting and sharing her vision, Zollenberg found the perfect partner to bring her showcase to life. “Being able to put this on at The Center for Contemporary Art was an unbelievable opportunity,” she says. “I’ve done so many things in my career, but being a curator of an art show—I didn’t think that was going to be me, but here I am.”
A SHOWCASE OF TALENT AND COMMUNITY
The Creative Women’s Showcase will feature two distinct events: a gallery setting where traditional artworks will be exhibited from November 1 – December 8 and the November 1st opening event where artists and business owners will sell their creations. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to interact directly with the artists and entrepreneurs, learning the stories behind their work.
“I wanted the audience to be able to come and interact with the artists and business owners and hear their stories,” Zollenberg explains. “So many times, you walk into a museum and think, ‘I love that painting, but what’s it really about?’ One of the best aspects about my show is now the people will be able to ask the artists the questions.”
GRATITUDE AND REFLECTION
Zollenberg expresses deep gratitude to The Center for Contemporary Art, whose mission as a nonprofit organization is to serve the community through classes, exhibitions, events, and community partnerships. The galleries are free and open to the public seven days a week, making art accessible to all.

UNICATION, AYS.”
Reflecting on the journey that led to the showcase, Zollenberg is humbled by the talent and stories of the women involved. “It’s unifying, creating this network of women and kindness,” she says. “Making the showcase has been like creating a living piece of artwork—you have this idea in your head, and then you start creating it and putting all the pieces together. But now, when I look back at the atmosphere we created and the people I can now call my friends, it’s just amazing. The amount of talent in that room is just inspiring.”
The Creative Women’s Showcase is a celebration of creativity, community, and the power of women supporting each other. It is a testament to the idea that sometimes, the best things in life happen by chance—and those chances can lead to something truly extraordinary.

COMMUNITY IN CRISIS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COMMUNITY IN CRISIS
A Decade of Combating the Opioid Epidemic
For Andi Williams, Executive Director of Community in Crisis, their mission began around a kitchen table in 2014, driven by a troubling surge in overdose deaths among young people in the Somerset Hills. Now, a decade later, Community in Crisis— founded by Jody D’Agostini—has grown from a small group of volunteers and a grassroots initiative into a well-structured organization with a staff of 15, tackling the complex issues of substance use disorder.
The catalyst for their efforts was the alarming opioid crisis that had begun to claim lives in their community. "We were all mothers of teenagers and young adults," Williams said in a recent interview. "It was heartbreaking to see these young people dying, and we knew we had to do something."
The organization benefited from a task force established by former Governor Chris Christie, which provided a detailed 88-page report on grassroots approaches to tackling the epidemic. Utilizing this report, Williams and her colleagues gathered community stakeholders—including faith leaders, educators, and law enforcement— to formulate action plans.
In 2017, Community in Crisis secured funding and formally incorporated, marking a significant expansion of their efforts. Today, the organization focuses on two primary areas: prevention and recovery support. Their prevention efforts include raising awareness about the risks of opioids, educating parents and youth on substance use, and providing resources to schools and community groups. The organization also offers recovery support services, and emphasizes harm reduction strategies, including safe use practices and overdose prevention.
One of the key annual events supporting these initiatives is their gala, which raises funds for activities not covered by grants. "The gala helps us fund essential programs that aren't always supported by grant money," Williams explained. These funds may cover everything from snacks and crafts for youth programs to wellness kits for individuals with substance use disorder.
Williams envisions a future where substance use disorder is treated with the same compassion and urgency as other chronic diseases. "I'd like to see a world where there's no stigma attached to substance use disorder," she said. "We need to talk about it openly and support those affected."
Community in Crisis is offering upstream mental health programs for youth and promotes harm reduction practices. The organization is exploring new strategies to keep individuals safe until they are ready to seek treatment, such as distributing naloxone kits and providing educational materials on safe substance use practices.
As Williams reflects on the past decade, she remains hopeful about the impact of their work. "Every step forward is a step toward saving lives and supporting those in recovery," she said. "We’re committed to making a difference in our community and beyond."
Community in Crisis remains a crucial resource in the battle against substance use disorder, working tirelessly to bring hope and change to those affected by this challenging epidemic. Believing that connection is key to overcoming substance use disorder, they focus on uniting people through prevention efforts and recovery support.
For those interested in supporting the cause, Community in Crisis welcomes donations and offers various ways to contribute to their ongoing efforts.

THE BENEFITS OF PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE WITH HALO HOME MAINTENANCE
KEEPING YOUR HOME IN TOP SHAPE

In a world where convenience often takes precedence, it’s easy to overlook one of our most valuable assets: our homes. But as Halo Home Maintenance Owner and local resident Andy Barresse emphasizes, neglecting home maintenance can lead to costly repairs and
regularly, we can prevent such disasters from happening,” Barresse adds.

headaches. This preventative approach not only protects your property but also enhances its longevity and value.
THE HALO DIFFERENCE
Andy Barresse, a third-generation contractor with extensive experience in home repairs, founded Halo Home Maintenance to address a gap he noticed in the market. “I’ve been in and out of houses my whole life,” Barresse explains. “I always wanted to understand not just how to fix things, but why they needed fixing in the first place.”
Barresse recounts a pivotal moment when he discovered the root of a serious water leak that had caused significant damage to a home. “The problem was a leaky gutter that had gone unnoticed for years,” he says. “The damage was extensive—probably around a hundred thousand dollars in repairs. If we had done regular maintenance, we would have caught the issue long before it escalated.”
This experience underscored the importance of preventative maintenance. “By cleaning gutters and inspecting key elements of a home
Kerr, Halo’s first franchisees, bring a wealth of experience to the company. Their choice to invest in Halo Home Maintenance reflects their commitment to providing comprehensive home care. “We were drawn to Halo because it complements our existing business and offers a steady revenue stream throughout the year,” says Candace Kerr. “It’s an extension of what we already do, providing our clients with more complete service.”
Kerr noted that they discovered Halo through their local BNI chapter and were impressed by Barresse’s vision and the personal story behind the company's founding. “What sold us on Halo was Andy’s passion and his dream for the company,” Kerr explains. “Halo was named in honor of Andy's granddaughter who passed away, which resonated with our values of giving back and making a difference.”
Jon Kerr adds, “This franchise model not only allows us to offer a valuable service but also keeps us busy year-round. It’s a great way to maintain client relationships and offer additional value.”
REAL PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
Preventative maintenance isn’t just about cleaning gutters. It also includes tasks like dryer vent cleaning, which is vital for fire safety. “Clogged dryer vents are a serious fire hazard,” Jon Kerr notes. “We ensure these are cleaned regularly to keep homes safe.”
Other key services include inspecting and sealing windows and doors to prevent drafts, checking roof shingles for damage, inspect attic and basement for signs of leaks, infestation or mold, and regular power washing to maintain the integrity of your siding and prolong its life.
WHY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE MATTERS
Preventative home maintenance is more than just a buzzword—it's a critical practice for preserving the integrity of your home. Rose Marie Iskowitz, who is partners with Andy on the franchise side, highlights the benefits of regular upkeep. “Many homeowners, like me, aren’t handy or simply don’t have the time,” Iskowitz explains. “Having a service like Halo ensures that essential maintenance tasks are handled without having to worry about them.”
Iskowitz contrasts preventative maintenance with reactive repairs, using an analogy many can relate to. “It’s like going to the dentist for regular cleanings versus waiting until you have a toothache,” she says. “Maintaining your home proactively can prevent much bigger problems down the line.”
Kerr emphasizes this point with a reallife example. “We had a customer whose home flooded because their gutters weren’t cleaned, which led to a $15,000 repair that wasn’t covered by insurance. If we had been able to inspect and maintain those gutters, we could have prevented that disaster,” Kerr recounts. “Preventative maintenance is crucial—it helps homeowners avoid significant expenses and ensures their homes are safe and efficient.”

THE BUSINESS OF HOME MAINTENANCE
For those considering a new venture, Halo Home Maintenance offers promising franchising opportunities. “Our franchise model is designed for those with a background in contracting or related fields,” Barresse notes. “It’s a natural fit for those who want to add a reliable income stream while helping homeowners keep their properties in top shape.”
With a growing network of franchisees, Halo Home Maintenance is expanding its reach and impact. “We’re excited to see how our franchisees like Candace and Jon are already making a difference,” Barresse adds. “Their success is a testament to the value of our services and the potential of our business model.”
Preventative home maintenance is a smart investment for both homeowners and those looking to start a new business. With Halo Home Maintenance, you can ensure your home remains in prime condition and explore lucrative franchise opportunities in a booming industry. As Barresse puts it, “We’re here to keep homes safe, efficient, and looking their best—because every home deserves the best care.”

RUNWAY OF DREAMS
10 years of Fashion Innovation

This year, the fashion world celebrated a major milestone with the Runway of Dreams ‘Fashion Revolution’ runway show, marking a decade of groundbreaking change in the industry. Held in New York City, the vibrant epicenter of fashion, this New York Fashion Week event highlighted a decade-long commitment to inclusivity and accessibility that continues to drive the industry forward.
The show features an impressive lineup of over 60 models, each representing a range of disabilities, ages, and backgrounds. This diverse array of talent brings to life adaptive and universally designed apparel and footwear from leading brands including Victoria Secret & Co, JCPenney, Tommy Hilfiger, Kohl's, Zappos.com, and Target. These brands showcase their latest innovations, proving that fashion can be both functional and stylish for everyone, regardless of their physical needs.
"The Fashion Revolution show is not just an event; it is a celebration of the progress we have made and a powerful statement about where we are headed next," says Mindy Scheier, the visionary founder of Runway of Dreams. "This event highlights our unwavering commitment to making fashion inclusive and accessible to all, and it serves as a beacon of inspiration for future designers to push boundaries and rethink conventional fashion norms."
CONTINUED >
Scheier's personal journey into adaptive fashion began with a deeply personal experience involving her son, Oliver, who has muscular dystrophy. He expressed a simple but profound desire to wear jeans like other kids his age. After adapting a pair to suit his needs, Scheier witnessed a significant boost in Oliver’s confidence, which led her to realize the broader need for inclusive clothing. This epiphany sparked the creation of the Runway of Dreams Foundation, a pioneering organization dedicated to integrating Adaptive designs into the mainstream fashion industry.
"The Fashion Revolution show is a reflection of a decade's worth of progress and commitment to inclusivity," Scheier explains. "It is about celebrating the increased visibility and celebration of individuals with disabilities in the fashion world and inspiring a new generation of designers to continue driving this movement forward."
The show also highlights the "Next Gen" project, an exciting initiative that pairs emerging designers from the Fashion Institute of Technology with industry pioneers. This collaboration not only honors those who have paved the way for greater diversity in fashion but also fosters new talent, furthering the cause of inclusivity and innovation in the industry.
The success of the show signifies a major milestone in the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and accessible world. It stands as a testament to the values of acceptance, innovation, and empowerment that continue to propel the fashion industry forward. This event embodies the collective effort of a community committed to breaking down barriers and embracing the diverse and vibrant tapestry of human experience in fashion.

RUTGERS ATHLETICS’ COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUTGERS ATHLETICS
Rutgers Men’s Cross Country
Rutgers Men's Soccer at Americas Grow A Row
When the Scarlet Knights aren’t busy scoring touchdowns or sinking three-pointers, they’re making a splash in their communities. Rutgers Athletics isn’t just about top-tier competition; it’s also about making a meaningful impact beyond the field. Dive into how Rutgers’ athletes are flexing their muscles for a great cause and how they balance their game-day grit with giving back.
FROM FIELD TO COMMUNITY: RUTGERS' WINNING PLAY
At Rutgers, the game plan includes more than just practice and play—it’s about service too. The Scarlet Knights For Life program is the MVP of this effort, turning athletic prowess into community good. This program isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s integral, making sure that every student-athlete gets a chance to give back and grow from the experience.
“The Scarlet Knights For Life program is more than just a title; it’s a call to action,” says Michelle Wilson, Executive Director of Elijah’s Promise. “It’s about our athletes rolling up their sleeves and diving into community work with enthusiasm.”
GAME-CHANGING COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Rutgers athletes are known for their moves on the field, but their community service projects are equally impressive. Take the annual All-Athlete Welcome Back BBQ. On Labor Day, more than 700 student-athletes converge to pack 3,000+ snack packs for Elijah’s Promise. Which is a New Brunswick, non-profit that harnesses the power of food to break the cycle of poverty, alleviate hunger and change lives. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the spirit of giving. These packs make their way to those in need, showing that Rutgers is committed to serving up kindness.
Over the past few summers, the Men’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball teams have worked at America’s Grow A Row, harvesting a remarkable 15,000 pounds of eggplant and 6,700 pounds of corn. This produce helps provide fresh food to those facing food insecurity. Additionally, through the Embrace Kids Foundation’s RU4Kids program, athletes serve as big brothers and sisters to children dealing with serious health challenges. That’s what we call a slam dunk for community impact!
BALANCING ACTS: ATHLETICS AND OUTREACH
How do the Scarlet Knights juggle intense practice schedules with community service? With a playbook that includes strategic planning and a lot of team spirit. Coaches and staff make sure that community service is part of the game plan, whether the team is in season or off. It’s all about integrating service opportunities into their busy lives.
“Our teams are always looking for ways to give back,” says Samantha Konkowski, spokesperson for Rutgers Athletics. “Balancing athletics and service is challenging, but it’s rewarding and part of our commitment to holistic development.”
RALLYING THE TROOPS
Getting student-athletes excited about community service is a key play at Rutgers. Freshmen are introduced to service opportunities during orientation, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a variety of ways to get involved. Coaches also champion these efforts, ensuring athletes participate in events like Saturdays in Motion and Special Olympics.
The involvement in these projects isn’t just about giving back; it’s also about personal growth. Athletes gain valuable skills, broaden their perspectives, and learn the power of service.
MEASURING THE SCORE
Rutgers Athletics keeps track of its community impact with a keen eye. They monitor the number of service hours and the diversity of opportunities available, aiming to up the ante each year. It’s all about increasing engagement and ensuring that every student-athlete has a chance to contribute.
Rutgers Athletics is focused on deepening existing partnerships and exploring new ways to support the community. It’s all part of their mission to ensure that their athletes are not just champions on the field but also off it.
As Rutgers Athletics continues to blend competition with community spirit, the Scarlet Knights are showing that their impact goes far beyond the scoreboard. For more on how these athletes are making a difference, visit www.scarletknights.com/skfl or @scarletknightsforlife on Instagram.

THE HEARTFELT JOURNEY OF BLO BLOW DRY BAR IN BERNARDSVILLE!
Tucked away in Bernardsville, Blo Blow Dry Bar has quickly become more than just a hair salon; it’s a community hub that celebrates resilience and empowerment. Founded by Janina Hecht, Blo Bernardsville has not only navigated the challenges of launching a business during a pandemic but has also embraced a culture of inclusivity and support.

Nancy Evaristo and Owner Janina Hecht
Hecht’s journey to opening Blo Bernardsville began with a simple yet profound inspiration: creating a space where beauty and confidence flourish. However, the path was anything but straightforward. Just months after opening, the Covid-19 pandemic forced a shutdown, leaving Hecht to rethink her strategy as she reopened to a cautious clientele. “No one was looking for new hair salons, especially during a lockdown,” Hecht recalls. “We had to start over with new hires and training, and it was daunting.”
The turning point came when Nancy Evaristo, a talented deaf stylist, walked
through the door looking for a job. Recognizing the challenges posed by the ongoing mask mandates, Hecht and Evaristo were undeterred. “We knew communication would be an obstacle, but we were ready to face it together,” Hecht explains. With the support of her team, Evaristo not only found her place but also thrived, gaining a loyal following and becoming an exceptional trainer. Today, the staff at Blo Bernardsville is learning American Sign Language to better connect with Evaristo and their clients.
Nancy Evaristo and Vanessa BergerFounder and President of 'Raise the Volume'
Hecht’s vision for Blo has always centered around her team. “I wanted them to be proud of their talents and feel encouraged to grow,” she says. That commitment has fostered a culture where stylists and makeup artists feel valued, which is evident in the high-quality service they provide. Regular clients often remark on the familial atmosphere that Blo has cultivated.
What sets Blo Bernardsville apart from other salons is its unique focus on hair extensions and specialized services. “We excel at offering luxury Glam Seamless and Priscilla Valles hair extensions, along with makeup services for everyday looks and special events,” Hecht notes. Their signature Blo On The Go service allows stylists to provide beauty treatments off-site, making it a convenient option for clients.
Beyond beauty, Blo Bernardsville is deeply committed to community service. Hecht and her team support two important local nonprofits, Raise the Volume and Bonnie Brae. They collaborate with Raise the Volume to raise scholarship funds for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. They are also currently organizing a holiday gift drive for female residents at Bonnie Brae, a residential school for youth in crisis. This initiative allows clients to contribute hair care products and accessories, giving young residents a “gift of glam” and the joy of being pampered.
Evaristo’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance. Born as the only deaf member of her family, she faced numerous challenges on her path to becoming a hairdresser. Despite failing the State Board exam multiple times and
encountering skepticism about her abilities, Evaristo never gave up. “I knew I had to keep trying,” she says, reflecting on her journey. Today, she inspires others, proving that passion and determination can overcome obstacles.
“I feel grateful and more confident working with the Blo team,” Evaristo adds. “Janina sees my potential, and together we’re creating an inclusive environment.” As she teaches her colleagues basic ASL, Evaristo is not only breaking barriers but also fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance.
In just a short time, Blo Blow Dry Bar has established itself as a symbol of resilience in Bernardsville. With a dedicated team led by Hecht and inspired by Evaristo, the salon continues to transform lives—one blowout at a time.
