Thankful Issue
In this season of thanks, we reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encour ages us to express gratitude, spend time with loved ones, and give back in meaningful ways. While ambition and the pursuit of goals are important, it's equally vital to cherish the journey and the people who walk along side us.
At this time, our hearts are filled with immense gratitude, yet also a deep sense of loss. Our editor and dear friend, Kim Wilder, passed away in September. Kim's dedication, kindness, and incredible talent left an indelible mark on this publication and all who had the privilege of working with her. She had a remarkable gift for storytelling and a steadfast commitment to the community, which shone through in everything she touched. We are profoundly grateful for her contributions, and she will remain in our hearts forever.
In reflecting on our blessings -- our families, friends, and this beautiful community that inspires us daily-- we are especially grateful for the opportunity to have worked with incredible people like Kim. We also want to thank our readers and partners for their ongoing support, which makes each issue of this magazine possible.
Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratitude, and giving back to our community. We are deeply thankful for the residents and businesses in Temecula who contribute to the organizations that make our city vibrant, welcoming and so charming! We truly appreciate the support of our advertising partners, which helps bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month.
As we prepare to gather with loved ones this holiday season, let's take a moment to reflect on what truly makes life meaningful and the blessings we sometimes overlook.
With gratitude,

BOARD AND BRUSH TEMECULA OWNERS MAKE GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AN ART
“These young people are phenomenal. They just haven’t had the tools to see what they can offer not only themselves but their communities.
Getting creative may not be everyone’s cup of tea but giving back to the community certainly is.
Locals Mo and Jen Casas own the Temecula franchise location of Board and Brush, a creative studio whose goal is to help customers become DIY masters. From signs to a variety of other woodworking projects, Board & Brush offers a great in-studio experience, whether with friends or as a team building activity.
However, the local business owners don’t just help make woodworkers. Through their involvement with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Youth Leadership Program, Mo and Jen dedicate their time and resources to helping young individuals develop leadership skills, discipline, and a sense of purpose.
The Casas became involved in the program when their kids were members, 2014 and 2017 respectively. While their children are no longer students of the program, it’s the mission of the

Sea Cadets is a national nonprofit organization focused on building youth leadership and is sponsored by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. The organizations helps youth and young adult members to learn valuable life skills such as multitasking, prioritizing, working under pressure and service. They aim to help students be prepared to conquer the unique challenges of today.

“This work is hopefully building the next generation’s leaders,” says Jen.
Mo serves as the Director for Leadership and Retention, with Jen assisting him. They strive to bring a leadership training focus to work with cadets that are moving towards roles of leadership and needed to learn practical ways to solve problems and manage conflict resolution.
“It’s the biggest blessing of our lives to see these students develop,” they said. “To help them figure out how to take care of ‘their people’ as leaders.”
In this season of Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for?

CHEERS TO A HEALTHY FOOTBALL SEASON!
ARTICLE BY TYLER KALISIAK
With 15 years of experience helping people achieve their health goals, I know how challenging it can be to stay on track during football season, especially at tailgates and watch parties filled with high-calorie snacks and alcohol. However, with a few simple strategies, you can still enjoy the party while keeping your diet on track.
1. BRING YOUR OWN DISH:
Instead of relying on wings, chips, or fried foods, bring a healthy option like a veggie platter, lean protein, or a wholesome dip. Having something delicious and guilt-free allows you to enjoy without worry.
2. LIMIT ALCOHOL:
Alcohol can add hundreds of calories and lower your resolve. Set a limit, or choose lower-calorie drinks like light beer or wine spritzers to keep your decisions sharp.
3. AVOID THE FOOD TABLE:
We’ve all been there - standing by the snacks, mindlessly grabbing one after another. One of the best ways to avoid overeating is to simply keep your distance from the spread. Stay away from the food area, and focus on socializing to reduce temptation.
These simple tips can help you stay on track with your diet without sacrificing the fun and camaraderie of a great tailgate or football party!
In this season of Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for?
“The thing that is the most valuable to me... my beautiful wife, and my two little gifts from God are healthy and more than I could ask for.”
with Breaking Bad's Dean Norris at Swing Inn Cafe SMOKED TURKEYS,
ARTICLE BY AVA SARNOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWNA SARNOWSKI
Swing Inn’s Pitmaster, Alfonso, demonstrates the great time and care put towards preparing the meat they serve. At two-hundred fifty degrees across the board, spare ribs take four to six hours to cook, while briskets require twelve to fourteen. The convection of their cookers makes two-hundred fifty degrees feel like three-hundred, which crisps up the meat’s skin. Everything is locally-cooked and rich in flavor.
The cafe’s turkeys are smoked for two to three and a half hours and seasoned with a mixture of pepper and salt. More pepper than salt, though, as they become brine, which makes them juicy at the end of the day. They are then wrapped in foil with butter, creating a heavenly final result once ready to slice.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, Alfonso expressed how thankful he was for his team, job, boss, and the opportunities he’s been given. The rapid expansion of the business has been nothing short of amazing, with weekly goals consistently being beat. “I’m thankful for everything. What isn’t there to be thankful for?” he said.
Norris also shared his appreciation for the entire team and the community’s support. He gives his cooks room to shine. People from all over have come out in support and leave with happy stomachs.
For those eager to prepare a turkey breast akin to Swing Inn’s this Thanksgiving, consider the following:
- Select a turkey breast then season it with a couple tablespoons of pepper and salt. Alfonso encourages seasoning it with any rub of choice. Place it onto the smoker between 225 and 250 degrees, until the breast is reaching 160 to 165 degrees. Afterwards, pull the turkey off, and wrap it in foil with butter. This process is applicable to those cooking with an oven, as it doesn’t always have to be on a smoker.

Kim’s passion touched every page she edited and every story written.
A woman of incredible strength and talent, not only was Kim an integral part of the publication, she was a friend.
