Trion: Living Through Giving

Giving thanks by giving of ourselves

If there's a spirit to Thanksgiving, it's one that encourages the expression of gratitude.

And if there's a slogan, it might be this: "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more."

Which is why this season beckons us to appreciate those who have helped us in our journey. To spend time with those we love and to give back in meaningful ways.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back. In our cover story, we meet West Bloomfield resident Craig Vanderburg, COO of the national powerhouse firm Trion, who expresses his thankfulness by giving to clients, to community and to family.

We visit with Stalt Financial co-founders Cat Toone and Dan Zech, who not only work with private high-net-worth clients and business owners, they also give emerging businesses a head start by helping them with their founding strategic plans.

Then there's Dawn Hanford, whose team at West Bloomfield Adult Education is empowering international students by teaching them English. And local housecleaning franchisor Cheryl Arafat, who always gives more than is expected.

We are so thankful for the families and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and make our community vibrant.

We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you.

This holiday season, in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set aside time to consider our blessings – and how we might be a blessing to others around us.

It is heartwarming to see the difference we help make in so many lives.

If you're on a quest to find a greater purpose in life, you would be well served to use longtime West Bloomfield resident Craig Vanderburg as a role model.

His deepest passions have been reserved for expressing gratitude and giving to Trion clients as a strategic leader, to his West Bloomfield community as a volunteer – and to his family.

Craig is Chief Operating Officer at the wellbranded Trion Solutions ( TrionWorks.com), one of the nation’s Top 10 Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs) with its national headquarters based in Troy, Mich. He worked with Trion Co-Founders Bonner Upshaw III (CEO) and David L. Stone (President) to help merge their two previous PEOs in 2012 and rebrand the single entity into Trion Solutions in 2013.

As a PEO, Trion relieves the stress and burden of businesses managing payroll and other HR-related functions alone. It helps companies of all sizes stay focused on their core business while being able to offer employees Fortune 500-type benefits that help retain top talent.

At the time Trion was formed in 2013, it was processing payroll and managing HR-related functions for about 4,000 client worksite employees with total payroll of approximately $85 million. Ten years later, thanks to Craig's leadership in managing operations and keeping clients happy, Trion ended 2023 serving 60,000 client worksite employees with total payroll of $1.3 billion.

Trion is one of Michigan’s top corporate growth stories in a highly regulated industry known for its many moving parts and need for extreme accuracy. To do so, a Craig Vanderburg is needed.

He is known for his immense industry experience, attention to detail, relentless energy and wit and wisdom appreciated by Trion’s

200+ team members at corporate headquarters and major offices in Scottsdale, Arizona and Aventura, Florida.

Under his leadership, Trion’s customer-service model and technology platform have become major differentiators for the fast-growing company and are considered best practices in the PEO industry. Most importantly, they have led to Trion boasting annual, year-over-year client-retention rates of 98 percent – meaning Trion clients become raving fans of the company and most remain as clients for years. 2

Current television commercials showcase Trion clients boasting about the value received by working with Trion. Those include Anthony Tomey, The Tomey Group; Joe Vicari, Joe Vicari Restaurants; Jenny Brown, Dutton Farm; Kamal Shouhayib, The Choice Group; Richard Adamo, The Adamo Group; Andy Appleby, the United Shore Professional Baseball League; and Jerry Niester, Red-E Parts.

“It is such a pleasure working with our team members at Trion to serve our amazing clients,” says Craig. “Our team not only is highly experienced and capable, but also loaded with outstanding individuals who our clients appreciate and enjoy working with.”

Trion practices what it preaches. For 10 straight years, the company has been named as a regional and national Best and Brightest Companies to Work For™. Trion also can be found on other notable lists, such as Top Worksites, Cool Places to Work and Corporate Culture Awards.

Craig’s passion for giving and sense of thankfulness doesn’t stop with the clients and employees of Trion Solutions.

He is actively involved in West Bloomfield and the surrounding communities and often can be seen at important events for nonprofit organizations. He is

a board member of the Troy Chamber of Commerce and, closer to his West Bloomfield home, he is the Chairman of the Evans Scholars Committee at Edgewood Country Club, where he has been a member for 10 years.

This summer alone, his leadership and the work of many others, helped raise $75,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation, a charitable trust that provides full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies. Applicants must have a strong caddie record, excellent grades, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. In 2023, across the country, 920 caddies applied for the Evans Scholarship and 340 Scholarships were awarded for the 2024-25 academic year.

“The fact we can change the life of a young adult and help pave the way for a career of success is absolutely one of the great gifts any of us in life can do for others,” says Craig, a graduate of Plymouth-Canton High School and Wayne State University.

“It is such an honor for us to provide full-ride scholarships to the University of Michigan or Michigan State University for someone who has demonstrated consistently hard work with outstanding character and met high academic standards – from a family without the financial resources to provide the same. It is heartwarming to see the difference we help make in so many lives,” he says.

When Craig pursues an initiative, it always is accomplished with great passion and gusto. It is the same way he lives his personal life.

He is a loving father of three – Mitch (28 years old), Lauren (24) and Christian (4) – and a friend to many. During the weekends, he can be found at Edgewood Country Club showcasing his impressive golf skills and

colorful golf attire. Among the most well-known and popular members at Edgewood, the rounds with his array of regular golf partners end with congeniality and frivolity over adult refreshments in the grill. He is known for his ability to tell funny stories, remembering details from past years that entertain and impress all who enjoy his company.

When not golfing, he likely will be at his West Bloomfield home on Walnut Lake, entertaining family and friends on his pontoon boat, Wave Runners, canoe or paddleboards. Known by many affectionately as “Vandy,” he enjoys barbecuing and sharing his love of wine, bourbon and fine cigars.

He lives within walking distance to his favorite, nearby restaurant – Nonna Maria’s – where he became such a regular that it crafted, with his guidance, and permanently named a menu item after one of its best customers. “Vandy Pasta” is a delectable entrée of Rinaldi fennel sausage, creamy marinara, sauce, parmesan cheese and angel hair pasta.

Vandy also is a big fan of West Bloomfield.

“Everything you ever need can be found in West Bloomfield,” he says. “It has such amazing restaurants and shopping all within only a short drive, and I love that it is a quick drive to other places such as downtown Detroit, Birmingham, Northville and Ann Arbor.”

Craig Vanderburg lives life large – driven by the joy he finds in in living through giving and gratitude.

Whether in his capacity as the Chief Operating Officer of a major Michigan corporation, a community volunteer helping the less fortunate or ensuring family and friends enjoy forever memories of love and laughter, he is a role model for sure.

BIG PLANS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

THROUGH OAKLAND THRIVE, STALT FINANCIAL GIVES EMERGING BUSINESS OWNERS TRANSFORMATIONAL STRATEGIC PLANS – ABSOLUTELY FREE

Financial planners Cat Toone and Dan Zech wanted to give back to small businesses. They found their avenue in Oakland Thrive.

“They’re a fantastic nonprofit,” says Cat. “If you’re an Oakland County emerging small business, they match you with consultants like us who give you free advice. Oakland Thrive pays us an hourly stipend – you pay nothing.”

ARTICLE BY MARSHALL ZWEIG PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMRAN BAJWA

Cat and Dan are co-founders of Stalt Financial (staltfinancial.com), a client-centered practice that strategically designs financial plans to meet both short- and long-term goals, including exit strategies. Oakland Thrive's nonprofit mission fulfills their passion for helping others.

Cat explains Oakland Thrive. “They strengthen the community by strengthening small-business viability. A ‘silver tsunami’ is coming: business owners 55

and older are exiting their businesses in droves, and the next generation doesn’t want to be involved in the business. So they’re either getting bought up or they’re shuttering. And that’s a loss to communities, of a service, of jobs. Making small businesses and emerging startups strong is vital, I think, to the fabric of a community, and that’s what excited us about being involved with Oakland Thrive.”

"BUSINESS OWNERS JUST NEED A STARTING POINT AND A LITTLE BIT OF DIRECTION.”

Oakland Thrive COO Laura Dodd says Stalt Financial “brings immense value to our small business clients; they’re caring and knowledgeable.”

Through Oakland Thrive, Dan and Cat provide business owners up to two hours of free advice and insight, and a plan to manifest their vision.

“In two hours,” Dan says, “we can get a feeling and understanding of who you are, what your business is about, where you’re trying to go, and create a roadmap to level up your business.”

“Roadmap is a really good way to put it,” Cat adds. "A synopsis of the conversation and a list of action points, simple steps: ‘In

one to two years, you'll want to look at this and this; here are the professionals you may need.'”

“We always come at it from an educational standpoint,” Dan notes. “I’ll get through a point and say, ‘Does that make sense?’ I come from a family of educators and I want someone to walk away feeling like, ‘I see. I’ve got it now.’ I love that feeling.”

If Dan and Cat don’t have expertise in areas they discover you need, they’ll recommend other Oakland Thrive providers – and business owners get up to two hours of time with those providers as well. “We can tell them exactly who they need to go to, and what to ask,” Dan offers.

“Most of the time,” Cat continues, “business owners just need a starting point and a little bit of direction, a little boost to make sure that they're doing the right things. So we're providing this structure of what to keep in mind as they build this business, including the fact that someday they may want to exit.”

If you’re part of the silver tsunami, Stalt has information that can benefit you.

“Business owners who may be five to seven years from exiting their business, who may have no idea how to even start that process – reach out to Oakland Thrive,” Cat suggests. “Hopefully they’ll put you in touch with us.”

It’s November; I ask Cat and Dan what they’re thankful for.

“I’ll be honest: our time is limited – it’s scarce at best,” Dan responds. “But it’s rewarding to do right by these folks.”

“To give somebody that feeling of being secure in moving forward with their life plans because of the work we've done,” Cat adds, “is so immensely satisfying, in a way that 20-year-old me would never have imagined. We’re thankful we have the ability to give back to small business owners and share our experience,”

ADMITTED CLEAN FREAK CHERYL ARAFAT'S HOME CLEAN HEROES KEEPS YOUR PLACE AS IMMACULATE AS HER OWN HOUSE

GRIME FIGHTER

“I like everything tidy, back in place,” says Cheryl Arafat.

Cheryl owns a premier cleaning company called Home Clean Heroes of Oakland County – which fits her to a ’T,’

Cheryl also accompanies each new ‘grime fighter’ on their first clean to provide in-person training. “And if I don't have something for them to do, then we're cleaning my house. I want to

“WE'RE HERE SO YOU CAN SPEND
YOUR FREE TIME ON THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST."

because she’s an admitted clean freak. “Before I go to bed, my house has to have not a spoon in the sink. It needs to look ready for a visit from Jesus. Then I can sleep.”

Cheryl says she cleans to let out frustration, joking that her parents would intentionally initiate squabbles so she’d go on a cleaning frenzy. Cleanliness and order are also part of her parenting: “I set traps for my kids,” she admits. “I’ll hide a feather behind a couch.”

She’s a run-your-finger-across-surfaces mom too: “I’ll write ‘Mom’ in the dust,” she adds. And if her kids’ rooms are not clean, she’s taken pictures and half-jokingly threatened to post them on social media.

“I’m a grime fighter,” she summarizes with a smile.

Cheryl runs Home Clean Heroes the same way: “Everyone has to complete our Cleaning Academy videos before they’re hired, to make sure we provide consistent service no matter who’s on the schedule that day.”

see what you do, and it's my house, so if something’s not getting done, I'm gonna know it.”

Home Clean Heroes background-checks all their employees too, and they’re fully bonded and insured. “Accidents happen, people make mistakes,” Cheryl says. “If something gets damaged or broken, we’ll repair or replace it.”

Cheryl’s family has always been self-employed, so her drive to succeed matches her zeal for cleanliness. “We're here so you can spend your free time on the things that matter most," Cheryl declares.

Before she quotes a price, Cheryl does a walk-through and gives a free in-home or in-business estimate: “I’m honest. With empty nesters, for example – your kids are at college, those rooms aren’t being used – I’m not charging you for the entire 5,000-square-foot house.”

Home Clean Heroes adjusts their cleaning products for their customers’ needs. “We carry an eco-friendly line,”

Cheryl explains, “but if a customer says, ’Bleach the heck out of my bathrooms,’ that’s what you’ll get. Your house, your rules.”

The company shows up with all their own supplies, including vacuums, dusters and even color-coordinated microfiber cloths to protect rooms from cross-contamination. “Access, electricity and water are all we need from you,” Cheryl assures me.

Cheryl shows her gratitude to the community in multiple ways: donating fundraiser gift baskets to schools; sponsoring their events; supporting local churches; and giving back to first responders. “A portion of every service goes to First Responders’ Children’s Foundation,” Cheryl says, “and our corporate office matches it.”

In the past, Home Clean Heroes has offered a $5,000 scholarship for children or grandchildren of First Responders, as well as a contest where a First Responder and guests won a trip to New York City for Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.

Cheryl also proudly supports Cleaning for a Reason, an international non-profit that offers free housecleaning services to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer.

It's almost time to prepare for the family holiday get-togethers, and that means time to clean the house. Cheryl and her team are available for pre-cleanings – and the post-party scrubbing and cleansing once everyone has gone home.

I ask Cheryl for testimonials.

“My reviews on the website,” she replies, “are real people. There’s a relationship that gets built. Many clients aren’t even home when we arrive; they just give us their garage codes, their door codes, even the house key. That’s serious trust, and my team and I don’t take it lightly. We’re consistently respectful.”

And what is Cheryl grateful for?

“The clients I’ve come to know personally. They’re what keeps my business growing. I’m thankful for them!”

THE LANGUAGE OF BELONGING

PEACEFUL ENERGY, PATIENT TEACHERS: WEST BLOOMFIELD ADULT EDUCATION'S ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS PROGRAM GIVES STUDENTS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY WHILE THEY LEARN ENGLISH

It hit me the moment I walked into West Bloomfield Adult Education’s English Language Learner (ELL) building: the hush of peaceful energy.

Dawn Hanford, the program’s coordinator, knows what I’m talking about.

“It’s intentional,” Dawn says. “We help people from over 38 nations learn English, and many of them are here because of dire circumstances. So the space is very purposefully comfortable, warm, open.”

All three levels of English classes – beginner, intermediate and advanced – are in session when I’m there. Viktoriia Shkolnyk, a Level 2 (intermediate) student, came to Michigan from Ukraine.

“I like this school! I love this teacher!” Viktoria says excitedly. “We understand her very good because she talks so you'll understand. She talks slowly. She explains.”

Before ELL, Viktoriia couldn’t even ask questions in a grocery store. “I would point,” she admits.

She’s relieved to know English now. “It’s better for life,” Viktoriia adds. “You can live and it’s comfortable.”

Dawn says classes range from ten to 25 students; everyone’s tested for their English proficiency when they start.

“Some students have never been to school, so they don’t even know the alphabet in their own language,” Dawn reveals. “But I find it’s actually easier to teach those students, because they’re a clean slate.”

Dawn says their teachers only teach in English.

“This is an immersion program,” Dawn explains. “We use the Oxford Picture Dictionary, which was created for adults. And we build our lessons around themes.”

For example, if the theme were fall in Michigan, the teacher would bring cider, apples and donuts while discussing the state’s geography. “We have a good time with it,” Dawn acknowledges.

Enrollment is almost all through word of mouth.

“Japanese families, for example, go back home and tell people, ‘If you’re coming to Michigan, go here,’” Dawn shares. “We’re very proud of that reputation.”

Down the hall, Kimberly Liddell-Love, assistant principal at Cass Tech, is leading the advanced class. I ask her students what brought them to West Bloomfield Adult Ed. One woman encourages another to speak; it’s apparent the two are friendly.

The second woman, Engely Hernandez, finally says, “I heard the music and that started it.”

The music of the English language? I ask.

“Pop music,” Engely responds, and now that I understand her, I laugh. “I would try to understand the words,” Engely continues, “and now, ‘Oh my god, this is what they say!” Engely’s from Venezuela.

I note to Dawn the friendliness I observed in Ms. LiddellLove’s class.

“People come here for the social aspect,” Dawn agrees. “They like the community. We do all kinds of fun things. One day I got a myplate.gov recipe, brought in a crockpot and taught them how to use American measurements. So we had creole chicken and rice that night.”

Dawn recalls a former student coming in to register a friend.

“He said, ‘I love this school. I learned English in this school, and now I can talk to the people in this country. And I love this country.’

“I asked what he loved about America. ‘I come from Gaza,’ he said. ‘In my country, I don’t know if I’m going to wake up in the morning. I don’t know what’s going to come in the day. Here, I have a house with Chaldean neighbor on one side, and on other side I have Jewish neighbor, and we are friends, and we barbecue together. Nowhere else could this happen. I love this country.’”

Then Dawn tells me her own inspiring story of a second language learner: her father, an immigrant from Iraq.

“He had a party store and it burned down,” Dawn recalls. “For a year, he was completely depressed. One day he walked in and said, ‘I know what I’m going to do. I’m going back to school. I’m going to learn better English. And then I’m going to sell insurance.’ That was very inspirational to me. He was excited again, and happy. He had a path.”

Dawn’s been at West Bloomfield Adult Ed for 30 years.

“I’m thankful because I learn way more from them than I’m sure I ever teach them,” Dawn smiles. “I’ve stayed this long because these people here really need what we do. As long as they’re here, I will stay here.”

I ask if there’s anything else she wants a potential student to know.

“Observe a class,” Dawn responds. “See what we do here. Come anytime to watch. We’re very patient. And if you have difficulties, whether it’s food, housing – anything that prevents you from learning – we try to find solutions.

“A lot of people don’t like the word ‘assimilation,’” Dawn concludes, “but I believe everyone wants to belong.”

Grateful Patients, Confident Smiles

PATIENTS SHARE STORIES OF EXCEPTIONAL CARE AND PERSONALIZED COMFORT AT ADAM FIENMAN, DDS

Finding a dentist you can trust is an important aspect of healthcare. It involves establishing a relationship with a professional who understands your individual needs and helps you feel comfortable during dental visits.

In West Bloomfield and surrounding areas, many patients have found such a relationship with Dr. Adam Fienman.

Edward Kowalczyk’s story is a testament to the loyalty and trust that Dr. Fienman inspires in his patients.

“I have been a patient of Dr. Fienman since he started his practice in West Bloomfield. Traveling from Sterling Heights and passing many other dental offices along the way, I continue to trust my dental needs with Dr. Fienman for many reasons,” Edward shares.

His words reflect a deep sense of gratitude that has grown over the years.

Edward emphasizes the welcoming atmosphere and personal care he experiences at every visit.

“I feel welcome and at ease as soon as I enter the office, by the smiling ladies at the front desk. Once I'm in the chair, his dental assistant and hygienists know and understand my needs. I'm not just another face, they truly care about my well-being.”

For Edward, it’s not just about receiving dental treatment but about being seen and valued as a person and growing confident in his smile.

Dr. Fienman's practice goes above and beyond to ensure patient comfort. The warmest office feature, of course, is Mozzy – a friendly therapy dog who brightens patients' days. Additionally, a new "comfort menu" offers various amenities such as stress balls, ambient lighting, and personalized music choices during appointments. These thoughtful touches demonstrate the practice's commitment to creating a welcoming and relaxing environment for all patients.

Dan Bodak, another long-time patient, shares a similar sentiment. Reflecting on his own experience, he says, “One never knows what to expect when going to a new dentist for the first time. But after going to Dr. Fienman for the past five years, I can honestly say that I have been exceptionally pleased with my decision to see him for all my dental work.”

Dan, like Edward, highlights the friendly and knowledgeable staff that make each visit a positive experience. “His entire staff is friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. When you walk into his office, you immediately feel welcomed by everyone. Dr. Fienman is always cheerful, patient, fully explains all work to be done, and even makes it all painless.”

For patients like Edward and Dan, Dr. Fienman is more than just a dentist – he’s a trusted partner in their health.

“I highly recommend Dr. Fienman for all dental needs. Your teeth and gums will thank you," Dan concludes, capturing the essence of finding a dental home that truly cares for you.

In a world where healthcare can sometimes feel impersonal, Dr. Fienman’s practice stands out as a place where gratitude is felt on both sides of the chair. Patients are thankful not just for the expert care they receive but for the relationships they’ve built and the trust they’ve found. As we approach the season of giving thanks, stories like these remind us of the profound impact that genuine, compassionate care can have on our lives.
