Gratitude; the hearts memory, reminding us to cherish every moment

In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings.

Blessings to you and your family,

November 2024

“Announcing   $10.5M to bring new amenities to its Sandusky location.”

Kalahari Resorts and Convention Center is home to America’s Largest Indoor Waterparks, has announced an investment of $10.5M to bring new amenities to its Sandusky location. Updates to the resort include two new restaurants, a lobby renovation, and a new waterslide experience. Currently under construction, the new amenities are estimated to open by the end of year.

“2025 marks our 20th anniversary at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio,” said Brian Shanle, Resort General Manager, Kalahari Resort, Sandusky. “We have been incredibly blessed to have welcomed millions of amazing, loyal guests over two decades and are thrilled to continue to bring new experiences and amenities to enhance the Kalahari experience for years to come.”

Guests will enjoy the addition of two new dining options, a fast-casual restaurant MACS, serving handcrafted macaroni

and cheese and other comfort food favorites, and Cinco Niños, a modern Mexican restaurant & tequila bar. MACS will serve a variety of unique macaroni and cheeses, such as the Jalapeño Popper MAC, Loaded Baked Potato MAC and Buffalo Chicken MAC. A Wisconsinbased fast-casual chain started in 2013, MACS has not only grown to multiple locations throughout the Midwest but also opened its doors at the Kalahari Resorts’ Round Rock, Texas location in the winter of 2023.

Cinco Niños is an exciting new modern Mexican eatery and tequila bar. Cinco Niños first opened at the Kalahari Resorts’ Round Rock resort and expanded to Pocono Manor, Wisconsin Dells, and now Sandusky. The signature restaurant will feature Mexican favorites including quesadillas, enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos. The restaurant will also feature a full-service bar, offering signature tequila and mezcal drinks such as the Millionaire’s Margarita and the Spicy Watermelon Martini.

“Currently under construction, the new amenities are estimated to open by the end of year.”

WESTLAKE GRATITUDE

A Tribute to the City Prosecuting Attorney and Police Department.

In every community, there is a team of officials and staff who are devoted to the safety, security, and well-being of its residents. In Westlake, the dedication of the City’s Prosecutor and Police Chief deserves recognition and gratitude.

Their commitment to upholding justice, fostering community trust, and enhancing the quality of life in Westlake reflects the values that make this city a wonderful place to live. And their good work is often done under the radar.

At the helm of Westlake's prosecutors and lawyers is the City Law Director and Chief Prosecuting Attorney, Michael P. Maloney, whose responsibilities extend far beyond mere legal oversight. Michael Maloney serves as the city’s chief prosecuting attorney, responsible for prosecution of criminal cases on behalf of the City of Westlake and assisting the police department with matters such as search warrants and arrest warrants. He is, also, the primary legal advisor to the city government,

providing guidance on a wide range of issues, from municipal ordinances to complex legal challenges posed by lawsuits brought by and against the city. The Law Director/Prosecutor’s role is vital in ensuring that the city operates within the bounds of the law while protecting the rights and interests of both the city and its residents. Law Director Maloney has four part-time lawyers in his department, and three part-time staff. His First Assistant, Robin Leasure, has been a lawyer for the city since 1994.

At the head of Westlake’s Police Department is Chief Kevin Bielozer and Captain Gerry Vogel. There are 52 officers in the

Department, including a 7 member detective bureau. These officers play a crucial role in maintaining peace and order. They are highly trained and are often the first responders in times of crisis, including providing mutual aid and backup to neighboring communities in the most serious situations. Chief Bielozer’s commitment to serving the community goes beyond just law enforcement; he and his officers actively engage in community outreach and similar programs.  For example, he hosts a Community Police Academy, a twelve week informative program about the Westlake

Police Department and law enforcement in general. Law Director Maloney participates in this program and describes it as "engaging and a very good time for the participants, who learn a lot". The close relationship between the Prosecutor and the Police Department is essential. Together, they work on both the specific day to day criminal matters and the larger general initiatives aimed at improving public safety, addressing legal concerns, and implementing policies that benefit the community.

In 2023, Westlake handled approximately 702 misdemeanor crimes (not including traffic offenses) and 278 felonies.

Their dedication to public service creates a foundation of trust and respect that strengthens the fabric of the city.

Law Director Maloney and Chief Bielozer both agree that “we feel supported by Westlake residents. We are fortunate and grateful for that. It is important.”

Together, the professionals in these departments ensure that the legal system in Westlake operates fairly and effectively, and that the law is enforced with respect and integrity.

As we reflect on the challenges faced by communities, it is essential to acknowledge the resilience and dedication of those who serve Westlake.
