Saint Patrick’s Day Ireland, March 17

Give it up for the greenest celebration of the year! Saint Patrick’s Day is both cultural and religious celebration in honor of the patron saint of Ireland. It all started in the 17th century when the Irish celebrated the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Along with religion, it gradually became a celebration of the culture and heritage of the nation. Oh, and what a celebration it is! Parades, special church services, dancing and drumming on the streets, markets full of food and crafts, and so many spectacular performances. And most importantly – all in green!

Frozen Dead Guys Nederland, Colorado, March 10 – 12

Celebration of an ever-so-quirky story of Grandfather Bredo Morstoel. He was a Norwegian man who died in 1989, and with his family’s decision – preserved in dry ice and shipped from Norway to a cryonics facility in the United States. So, what can one do in a festival that celebrates such a bizarre notion? A lot, actually! For instance, racing with a coffin on one’s shoulder, participate in the Frozen Dead Guy lookalike contest, toss a frozen salmon for win, do a polar plunge in a frozen river, or anything else just as bizarre.

Holi, India, March 12

The colourful Holi festival has gained its popularity all over the world throughout the years, but not every fan of it remembers where it actually came from. This day ought to be observed on the full moon of the 12th month in Hindu calendar, and is now better known as the festival of colours as the bright spring is about to come. If Northern India is more about bright and colourful festivities, the South part is more focused on religious and spiritual means of celebration. However, you can be located anywhere in India, but the festive emotions of Holi will not leave you at any time. Symbolic bonfires and colour games will be the very heart of Holi. 8

Songkran, Thailand, April 13 – 15

As weird as it might sound, this is the celebration of New Years. The year itself starts on April 13, but the celebration is held throughout the next two days as well. Keeping up with the Buddhist and Hindu solar calendar, this day marks the beginning of the new solar year and the start of summer season. It is going to be three full days of fun and more importantly – water-fights, as it is considered a wish of good luck to splash some water on your loved ones. If you are up to something calm and harmonic, visit any of the Bangkok temples and find your spiritual self throughout this hectic celebration. | Spring 2017

Racing smart drive

Tell us a bit about your starting point in auto racing. Was it your own choice or more of an initiative from someone else? My experience has shown me that a person’s growth is more or less affected by the environment he or she is in. If you have been raised amongst musicians, it is more likely you’ll become one. I was born in a family of sports. My father was a talented race driver, being a member of the Soviet team. However, at that time Russian drivers were favored more than the Latvian ones. So the beginning was not easy for him, but eventually he did get in. And thus became one of the most successful and best racing drivers of the USSR. After that - rallies, moto and formula racing continued in all spheres of his life. Therefore, it was his initiative to have me seated in a go-kart. And it didn’t take long for his initiative to become my passion. I think I was 8 years old then, and after the first time I tried it – I immediately liked it, and needless to say – got pretty good at it. So, it all basically started with karting. Actually, it usually starts with karting as it seems the most logical progress in motorsports. And thanks to my father again, an opportunity appeared when I was just 13 years young – to try out formula.

16

| Spring 2017

Racing smart drive

It was in Germany, Formula BMW, and during the test drives I showed rather successful results. It was so exciting for me back then, the speed experienced was something new at that age. And right then I understood what my father had been telling me all the time – “You could be the first Latvian to strive to Formula 1!” At the time it seemed unreal – watching famous F1 pilots on TV and perceiving it as something intangible and far from achievable. But later you realize that it is not that unreal as you have thought,

And right then I understood what my father had been telling me all the time – “You could be the first Latvian to strive to Formula 1!”

and so the shift from karting to formula developed. I was actually a bit too young for formula driving back then, it was crazy for such a kid. I could not physically bear more than 5 laps. But it was worth it, going with such speed and trying out the thing I liked the most. Then what age is appropriate in such sports? There is a law stated that a person not younger than 16 might take part in formula. However, everyone starts training for it much earlier. I currently train my godson at karting, and he started when he was just 3 years old. To say that it actually gives something for the long run – I cannot really confirm that. But it does train some fundamentals in your instincts. When you are young, you do the driving rather unconsciously, without giving much thought to it. As he turned 8, I could start seeing him giving a lot more thought to what he did on the track. When the child reaches that age, you can eventually see the fundaments that have been laid in him at a younger age. Therefore, it is much easier to teach a younger kid, as he has not yet fully developed principles and opinions of his own – the factors that usually make it difficult to change one’s mind and even behavior.

Haralds and current Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg, 2002.

As you have already started up teaching your godson the basics of driving, does sharing of your experience and skills fit in your further plans as well? I think of teaching as of a personal thing. I would like to share my knowledge, however only if there is an actual use to it. And my godson qualifies for such situation. Once a funny situation happened – he participated in a competition, and after that we decided to have a ride in the rent go-karts. At the beginning I was not sure about it, he couldn’t even reach the pedals. But I agreed and decided to go from behind and make sure everything was ok. And then he started to go so fast that I was not able to catch up to him. And I saw everything from the techniques I taught him, and that just moved me. Especially considering that he was just 8 and everything was yet ahead of him. Those moments are really special and worth it. And currently, he is preparing for his big break for a competition in Italy – so it is a sure thing he will become the best racers out there. I couldn’t be more proud of him!

17

Racing smart drive

And who trained you? Was it in the hands of your father, or did someone else also give their shot? At the beginning it was my father. And when I started racing formulas, the training process was independent from that on. I didn’t have any mentors, just engineers that I worked with. And it is important to note than the engineer holds a very important part of the team, he has to know every single technical detail, and vice versa- the driver has to be able to describe every little thing he feels is wrong with the car. It is only natural that the driver knows some fundamental things about the technical condition of the car. Technical understanding is a must for a driver, otherwise it is hard to collaborate. Therefore, the closest relationship in racing usually is between the driver and engineer. That makes one wonder, how does a training process really go for formula racing? The main cornerstone for this sport is its expensiveness. For F3, one training day costs about 10 000 euro. And

18

you just train accordingly to the budget available. Latvia unfortunately has no formula tracks, so the only way I have kept myself fit is karting. I believe that there is no better driving alike to formula as karting. It’s cheap and effective enough. What I do physically – I run a lot, there are specific muscle groups you have to train to be able to sit in a tightlybelted seat. We have had special physical trainings where only one training day cost me about 1000 euros. And after such day, you are unable to do anything else but sleep. Quite exhausting but worth it. So yeah, we are in a good physical shape as well. What should parents of potential pilots expect in terms of this money issue? And furthermore, where and does the investment come back after the kid has achieved something? The closest relationship in The actual stage where yield appears is Formula 1. And only racing is between the driver and the average of 10 pilots earn

engineer. And it is important to note that the engineer holds a very important part of the team, he has to know every single technical detail, and vice versa - the driver has to be able to describe every little thing he feels is wrong with the car.

Racing smart drive

Olympic champions, World champions for that matter. It is not easy, it is even harder than you currently imagine – but it is possible!

money, the rest of them just invest it. There are some championships where the pilots get paid, but not a lot of them exist. And therefore sponsorship becomes a huge part of the sport, especially when starting up. I have had to deal with that for some time, but luckily I have found a person who helps me a lot in terms of finding sponsors. It is quite difficult at the beginning, but after that it gets a bit easier as you learn how to establish valuable contacts and grow your network. You have to leave a good impression and most importantly – prove that your professional skills are of high level. So it is a hard, yet rewarding work. And regarding those who do not make it to F1, it is no rare occasion when potential formula pilots and racing drivers become excellent engineers, mechanics, team leaders and managers. So if the person stays in the industry, there will always be something for him to do. It seems that money really does become as the defining factor of one’s success in the sport. Tell us, have there ever been situations where this factor made you want to quit the sport? I see the situation from two sides. It is not good that money usually plays the leading role, however those are the terms of the game. And if I am involved, instead of whining I just accept it and try to get better. Yes, it is the most expensive kind of sports in the world. But the other side to it – thanks to this, I have grown a large network of people I would have never met if I was a simple Latvian student. So in the business field it somehow gets back to you, sooner or later. Because on this planet – networking is what really matters. The people you meet help you to achieve goals and success in all forms of careers. You have to take into account that it is not easy, however possible to bring up a professional racing driver or pilot. I do live by a motto that there is nothing impossible. Us Latvians – just look at what we have achieved for being such a small nation – Spring 2017 |

So now to the best part – where have you been driving up until now? Let’s see, I participated in Formula Renault 2000 in which I was regarded as the best debutant in Scandinavia, as well as Formula BMW 2004 in Austria where I became the champion in Austria-Switzerland Formula LO. International Formula Master, GP2, World Series by Renault, Atlantic Championship. But most of all I improved at Formula 3, where several wins were obtained. Formula 3 is sort of a reference point – if you can do that, you are qualified enough to strive further. What is the coolest thing about Formula 3 – its aerodynamic coefficient is higher than that of Formula 1. Therefore, the philosophy of F3 – the faster you go in turns, the bigger is the road adherence - the better grip with road surface you get. And it sometimes messes with your head, as in such situations you think you’ve reached the maximum speed and start to slow down, however the opposite should be done. That is why I consider F3 as so unique – the faster you drive, the more balance you’ll get. I am currently racing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, it’s been 2 years already. And with the help of my amazing team we are currently holding the second position in the total evaluation. However I am far from finishing it, so that is still an ongoing process the dynamics of which will change in the near future.

What about the doping issue in motorsports? Is there such thing, or can racing be one of the proud sports to have avoided this nasty habit? You cannot really compare it to other sports, as there is no such thing as a chemical doping in this industry. The only doping can be a technical one. Finding loop holes in technical regulations and discover new ways to improve the condition of vehicle.

19

Racing smart drive

That’s good to know! And how about traumas, being such a major part of every single sport there is. We usually hear of people leaving professional sports like hockey or basketball severely injured. But what about auto racing – are there any typical injuries that one has to be aware of? Of course, hockey players, football players and boxers have a lot harder time in such terms. In motorsports – there could be one

So, the next logical step for me is to become the team manager – therefore, I will not participate myself in the next race, my priority being to manage the new team.

of two excesses – either you go off the rails completely (and end up with a crucial back injury) or nothing significant can happen to you. But you know, anything can happen at any place and time. And more importantly – doing anything. My biggest trauma has been whilst riding a bicycle – the wheel took me by surprise right in the stomach. I woke up in reanimation three days after, and the doctors told me that it was a miracle that I even survived. Not to sound too superstitious, but I do believe that you can affect a lot of things in your life, however there are some things that will happen to you anyway if it was just meant to be. So, being afraid of any kinds of sports – there’s just no use of that. And yes, while on the subject of cars, it is true that public roads statistically are far more dangerous for both – drivers and 20

pedestrians, than the actual racing tracks. So if you are not worried sending your child along the traffic, you should not worry sending your child on a racing track. Besides motorsports - was there anything else you wanted to do in life? Or is there anything remotely different you currently do on spare time, in between the races whilst traveling for example? Well, when being a kid I was a huge fan of Queen, particularly Freddie Mercury. I wanted to sing and play guitar just like him. However,

there was not an opportunity to realize that. But a few years ago, I walked by a music store and decided to buy a guitar. And now I am determined to learn playing it, although slowly, but still improving. In my free time I read books. Lots of them, different genres and authors. From Harry Potter to philosophical and esoteric books. Lately I have took upon biographies, I find them really inspiring. There is no better way to spend your free time. I believe that books have given me a lot more than high school. Now a bit more about the sports complex you manage - driving school, to be exact. What is the significance of such school and what are the future prospects for kids starting it? We start everything with karting, and only after that it is time for formula – tracks where we train at are usually somewhere in Europe.

Karting school is the basic process where all children participate and according to success shown in it, we select the best ones and those who seem serious about it. After that, we can seat them in formulas and see where it goes further in terms of a professional career. We had a student like that, and now he is training in Canada in a professional level. You provide a technical platform so that the kid can start properly. The principle of karting is very similar to formula. But we live in a time where technical equipment of this sport is of small assortment, as well as comprehension of it amongst the society. With 333 Complex we consider ourselves as pioneers of this industry, trying to make it more popular. There are quite a lot of races held in the Baltics, however not enough attention has been drawn to them. Therefore, people are so unaware of it, thus the field still being relatively new in Latvia. Also, there are no rare situations when parents want it more than the kid does. And it usually does not end well. The right thing to do in this industry – take your kids to the driving school, leave them and trust us to do our jobs. If at the beginning races were more like a family event then later I understood it is much easier to continue doing it alone. The parent usually adds more stress than necessary, a pressure of sort – and that’s why I agreed with my father that he would keep a healthy distance from now on. And no hard feelings there, it is just how it should be. Parents need to let their kids be independent. Besides parents, are there any other sponsors that support the youth? Usually, it is upon the parents. But we do have scholarships in karting school, fully paid. It has come from both 333 and The Latvian Automobile Federation. We select the best who are granted with the scholarship after the training sessions and test drives. In that way we try to ease the financial situation as much as we can, so that the motivation would not get lost and the kids would have future in motorsports. We also have quite valuable connections that can help in the search of sponsors. Do You believe that something would have been changed if there was such a school in your time? During my past experience I have made a lot of mistakes, and if I had someone like me who would teach me the right process | Spring 2017

Racing smart drive

for becoming a formula pilot, I believe that I would not have spent that much money, and maybe even my results would have been more improved by now. In this matter our karting school is an excellent choice if your kid shows any kind of potential and willingness in motorsports. That way both the children and us can evaluate what he is good at, and then talk about the steps to be taken for further growth. So through all of the mistakes and success, you became the number one formula pilot in Latvia. How did that feel like? I have never given myself a status of such sort. I think I am just too modest to consider myself as a man of a status. There was a situation once, when I walked through the track with my Lamborghini jacket, collected bottles and other trash thrown on the ground, and a wealthy Russian man comes up to me and says – “Hey, you drive the Lamborghini, don’t you? Why would you go around picking up the trash?” And I was so confused, it is not like I have become conceited and ignorant just because of my status, I still am just a person who has not forgotten the humble nature of a simple human being. It really is refreshing to hear that! And how does Your future in racing look like? I have been racing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo for 2 years now. So, the next logical step for me is to become the team manager – therefore, I will not participate myself in the next race, my priority being to manage the new team. I am also planning on participating in

the building process of a kartodrome in Georgia, as well as help organizing the International Touring Car Championship in Georgia – TCR International Series. It is an initiative of the whole “333” team – to gather up all our experience and try sharing it as much as possible, all for the purpose of promoting sports. And I will also keep managing the 333 Complex which I truly love doing. We have finally built a new karting track alongside the territory, as well as continue to train the new drivers at the karting school. The complex is already preparing for the next Playground Festival – held from July 7 to 9 this year. It is a festival of music and leisure activity sports. Number of different kinds of sports all around the whole complex territory, 2 stages and an opportunity to try each of the sports offered. It is surely amazing and exciting, and what is the most important thing to know – it is not about wild partying and alcohol like all the typical summer festivals are. It is a perfect combination of 2 most important things - music and sports. During these days you can observe different competitions and at the end of the day – try them yourself. Every single year the festival audience is expanding, and it will do so in the further years as well. There are also a lot of supporters as such leisure time

seems to be closer to them than a simple music festival. I also take active participation in other sports - surfing, wakeboarding and kiteboarding. To go to the ocean for a week, spend time with my friends and forget about everyday worries – that is quite a significant part of my life. As for a motivational and inspiring conclusion of the interview – in few words, how has motorsport benefited you over the years? The main things this sport has given me

– determination, concentrating skills and ability to strive for goals. And that is worth something! General knowledge on the process of achieving goals is created during auto racing. And this experience can give you

I have learnt to respect every person’s way of living. And I think that no higher education could give me that.

a lot in other life situations - you feel like you know how to do any other things 3 times faster now. That sometimes makes me really impatient when encountering slower people, but I have learnt to respect every person’s way of living. And I think that no higher education could give me that.

Introducing Tenerife

Title “Tenerife” comes from the original inhabitants of the island – the Guanches – meaning “Snow Mountain”. Such title was accorded due to snowy peaks of Teide volcano, which coincidentally is the highest peak in the whole Atlantic ocean (3718 metres). The climate is constantly warm – not too cold, not too hot – in other words, the perfect vacation place. It is located in the subtropical climate zone, and is often titled as the island of the eternal spring. Winters are a bit colder than summers, however the average temperature still holds somewhere between +21 and +23. Northern shore of the Island is rocky, and the shores are high and steep. Climate on this side is more humid and cooler. Southern part, on the other hand, holds shallow, sloping shores that connect to rocky slopes. In here you will also find an extensive range of flora of almost every world climate zone.

Where it all began The first inhabitants of Tenerife were Guanches who fell victims for constant Arabic invasions. Then the French explorer Jean de Bethencourt stepped his foot on the Northern shores of Lanzarote where he immediately occupied Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and el Hierro. The inhabitants of La Gomeras, Grand Canaria, Tenerife and La Palmas resisted conquistadors for almost a hundred of years. However, 1495 was the year they gave in to the Spanish pressure. The rich islands started to attract the attention of European merchants and explorers. Even Columbus’s discovery of new shipping routes in 1492 boosted the significance of the archipelago. Up until 19th century the government was located in the Grand Canaria, and the capital title was given to La Palmas. All European ships stopped at the Puerto de la Luza port to refill their stocks before the long voyage ahead of them. Just in the previous century two cities – La Palmas in the Canary Isles and Santa Krusa in Tenerife – begun to compete with one another for the right of becoming an island capital. Therefore, two provinces were created – East and West. From 1936 to 1975 the Canary Isles were ruled by the general Franko regime. After his death, democratization process and rapid economic increase begun. In 1982 the Canary Isles gained their autonomy, and in the very same year the Isles were included in the NATO, and since 1986 – in the territory of European Union. 24

The Pride of Tenerife - Teide

Teide Volcano is considered as the 3rd largest volcano in the world, as well as the highest peak in Spain. The last eruption of the volcano was witnessed in 1909, and has been sleeping tightly since then. The whole territory has been made into a national park, the territory of which can be easily explored. A cable car can take you up to the height of 3555 metres in 10 minutes, where a splendid landscape appears in front of your eyes – coagulated lava, rocks, cliffs, snow on the mountain peaks. This alley is called the Moon Alley, as the view really reminds of the surface of Moon or Mars. If the day is clear and sunny, you can see other Canary Isles, mostly Grand Canaria, La Gomera and La Palma.

Such movies as “Star Kings”, “Million years before our Era”, “Ape Planet”, have been filmed in the Teide Volcano Park.

The fifth chapter of “The Bourne Identity” was filmed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Serving as the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz holds numerous attractions and locations for everyone to see. The city’s port is one of the main traits of the location, therefore becoming the second most populated in the Canary archipelago. Full of modernist architecture, wide venues and beautiful boulevards, the city holds an urban and vibrant atmosphere. In the city centre you will find Plaza de Espana, built in the middle of the 20th century. It is considered as one of the largest public squares of the Canary Islands, as well as a meeting spot and a starting point for exploring the Old Town. At the very centre of the square, a tall Monumento de los Caidos stands, shaped like a large cross. It commemorates the victims of the 20th century Spanish Civil War. The artificial pool also stands proud in the centre of the square, entertaining the guests with a refreshing fountain. Under the Plaza, however, you will find a stairway to a small museum. It preserves fragments of the 16th century Castillo de San Cristobal that once stood on the very same site. Located right next to the Plaza de Espana is the Plaza de la Candelaria. In the centre of its location you will find the monument of Triumph of Candelaria, dedicated to the patroness of the Canary Islands – the Virgin of Candelaria. It is a Neoclassical style sculpture of Carrara marble that was carved by Italian sculptor - Pasquale Bocciardo. Do not forget that if you visit Tenerife during May, flowers are put at the foot of the monument as to celebrate and honor the anniversary of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife founding.

Guimera Theatre, already 150 years of age, combines the outer looks of classicist Romantic styles, and interior decorated with frescoes and gold leaf. It is the oldest theatre in the Canary Islands, and was named after the writer Angel Guimera. The building has undergone significant reconstructions in 1911, as well as in the time period from 1989 and 1991. Church of la Concepcion – oh, what a sight to see! The basis of this building dates back to 1500. Initially it was titled the church of la Santa Cruz. It was restored in 1653, and the current tower was constructed in 1786. The outer part of the church stands out due to its wooden balcony, which is quite a typical thing of the island, however not so typical for a church. Inside the church a vast collection of religious art creates a certain feeling of importance.

Outdoor Fun

One of the most recognized outdoor sites is Garcia Sanabria Park which houses the Museum of Open Air Sculpture – contemporary artist works exhibited along tropical plant species. The works are made by Jose Guinovart, Oscar Domingues, Joan Miro or Henry Moore. And then there is the Maritime Park – a place to relax, designed by a Canary architect Cesar Manrique. Right beside the complex – in la Caleta de Negros – one of the best preserved castles on the island can be seen – Castle of San Juan. A small zoo where you can actually interact with animals might interest everyone in your family – so visit the Monkey Park in Los Cristianos. And it’s not just monkeys in there – iguanas, crocodiles, exotic birds, the “big cats” and many more will await.

Gastronomical Virtues

Local cuisine holds great importance in the Island, so do not be afraid to explore and find a new taste in your life. Here are a few suggestions: Papas arrugadas – potatoes boiled in their jackets. Mojos – spicy sauces. Jack mackerel, vieja sancochada – fish stew. Seafood – sardines, mackerel, grouper, various shellfish. Pastel de cabello de angel – dessert made from pumpkin. Frangollo with honey – dessert made from sweetcorn. Truchas de batatas con almendras – pastries filled with sweet potato paste and almonds. Wines produced in Tenerife – Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de Guimar, Valle de la Orotava, Ycoden-Daute-Isora.

Abramović smart performance

Text by Anastasija Stepakova Photos provided by www.marinaabramovic.com

PROCESS IS

MORE

IMPORTANT THAN RESULTS Marina Abramović – a Yugoslavia-born master of performance. Her works endour relationship between the artist and audience, limits of the body and possibilities of the mind. Actively indulged into arts for more than five decades, Abramović was titled “the grandmother of performance arts”. She opened up a new concept of identity, turning viewers into participants and focusing on “confrontation of pain, blood and physical limits of the body.”

Until 10 pm Abramović was born in Belgrade, Serbia. Her parents were Yugoslaviaborn partisans during the second World War. In a 1998 interview she disclosed that her parents were very strict with capricious views on life and raising a daughter. Until 29 years of age, her mother restricted her from being outside the house after 10 pm. Therefore, all of her performances made in Belgrade were never later than 10:00. In her youth years, she once asked her father to buy some oil colors. One of her father’s friends decided to show her how to put the colors to use: he put canvas on the floor and splashed a mix of colors on it. Following that, Marina realized that 38

in art “process is more important than results”. When having graduated from the Art Institution in Belgrade, she explored Croatia, later on heading to Amsterdam where she met the Western German performance artist – Uwe Laisipien (pseudonim – Ulay). After a few years in relationship, Abramović and Ulay decided to split up. Just for the sake of that, they undertook a journey to the Great Wall of China: they both went to the other sides of the end, just to meet in the middle and say goodbye to each other.

Abramović smart performance

Works with Ulay The main concepts they explored were the personality and individuality of an artist. Gradually, Abramović and Ulay decided to create a collective creature called “the other”, and they talked about themselves as parts of a two-headed body. They dressed and acted like twins, and kept no secrets from each other. For the performance “Death of Myself”, artists connected their mouths to a special aggregate and breathed each other’s exhales until the oxygen ran out. 17 minutes after the beginning of the performance they both fainted of light gas filled with carbon dioxide. This performance explored the ability of an individual to absorb someone else’s personality by merging with it and then destroying it.

February 18 – May 25, The Cleaner, Stockholm At once radical, controversial and revered, Marina Abramović is one of the most discussed artists today. Famous for her groundbreaking performance works, she continues to expand the boundaries of art. This exhibition is produced in close collaboration with the artist and marks her first major retrospective in Europe. In her work Marina Abramović explores the intersection between performing and visual art, with a focus in equal shares on body and time. Since the early 1970s she has continued to develop and expose a field of art other than the object based to a wider audience. Drawn from public and private collections, including that of the artist, the survey includes works from the earliest years, solo and with Ulay, until today: film, photography,

Performance (The Artist is Present), МоМА (Museum of Modern Art), 2010 The first retrospective exhibition of Marina Abramović appeared in 2010 in the New York Museum of Modern Arts. The idea of the performance concluded in Marina’s ability to establish a contact with any of the exhibition visitors just by the means of a focused glance. The performance lasted for 736 hours and 30 minutes, and the artist looked into the eyes of 1500 viewers. On the first day of the performance she met Ulay. The artist couldn’t help but to express her feelings and started to cry.

paintings and objects, installations and select archival material. The work poses questions of power and hierarchy yet is rarely overtly political. Her practice sometimes demands of us that we let go of a linear sense of time or an autonomous individuality. And yet personal experience and responsibility are central in her performances, seeking the core of notions like loss, memory, pain, endurance, trust. Marina Abramović addresses fundamental issues of our existence in ways that may both provoke and move us. Curator: Lena Essling January 18 – April 16, Collection “Terrains of the Body: Photography from the National Museum of Women in the Arts”, England Drawn from the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, U.S.), this collection

display showcases photography and video work by seventeen contemporary artists from around the world. By turning their camera to women, including themselves, these artists embrace the female body as a vital medium for storytelling, expressing identity and reflecting individual and collective experience. Featuring work by: Marina Abramović, Rineke Dijkstra, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Candida Höfer, Icelandic Love Corporation, Mwangi Hutter, Kirsten Justesen, Justine Kurland, Nikki S. Most Valuable Paintings Text by Liene Eglīte Publicity photos

Spring means colours, and colours mean art. Is there a nicer way to spend a leisure afternoon browsing around the local museums of the town you vacation in? You don’t even have be an art enthusiast to experience those certain, calming emotions whilst looking at valuable works of art. There is something about the colours or composition that makes one imagine what it would be like to have a “Mona Lisa” hanging in your living room. A couple of hundreds of millions of dollars – and one of these worldfamous pictures could be yours.

Еhe Portrait of Adele Blochbouer I

Gustav Klimt, 1906 The painting took the artist a total of 3 years to complete and is made of oil and gold on canvas, displaying hints of the Jugendstil style by the elaborate and complex ornamentation used in the painting. The work was commissioned by the woman in the picture – Adele Bloch-Bauer, the wife of a Jewish sugar industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. Adele was considered as a serious type of a woman, deeply included into artistic and intellectual circles in Vienna, and she had a close relationship with Klimt, even calling out to affair rumours. Before the painting was sold to the Neue Galerie in 2006, it was confiscated by the Nazis during the Second World War, shortly after which it was rightfully returned to one of Adele’s nieces – Maria Altmann.

Woman III

William de Kooning, 1953 This is just one of a series of six paintings de Konning has made where his preoccupation with the female form is shown. William is supposed to have made an abstract and revolutionizing art, leading the 1950s art world into a new movement called American Abstract Expressionism. He loved to return to the style repeatedly, often depicting women in a graffiti-like style with grinning smiles, massive breasts, claw-like hands. It is widely considered that the work may have been inspired by the famous Mesopotamian figures.

Le Rêve

Pablo Picasso, 1932 This amazing work of art, translated as “The Dream” was painted by Picasso when he was right in the age of 50. With the oversimplified outlines and contrasting colors, the picture is supposed to belong to Picasso’s period of distorted depictions. The picture displays Marie-Therese Walter – Picasso’s 24-year-old lover whom he met in 1927. Actually, she has been a muse in various Picasso’s works, and this one is supposed to be one of the most intimate ones as painted while Marie was sleeping. Many controversies are still ongoing on what exactly has been depicted in the various contrasting figures of the picture.

No. 5

Jackson Pollock, 1948 The whole concept of the painting in this work of art is quite unique as it is one of the first Pollock’s famous drip paintings – he would place the canvas on the ground and drip the paint all over it by moving it above the canvas. These supposedly subconscious movements became an important element of Abstract Expressionism, Pollock himself often being referred to as “Jack the Dripper”. This painting is supposed to be the very pioneer of the so called“ action painting”, which usually refers to self-creation or self-definition. The author did not even make a pre-sketch of the work, instead guided just by emotions and intuition, thus creating a fantastic impromptu masterwork. Even the paints used for it were quite extraordinary, such as paint with fluid viscosity and synthetic gloss paints.

The Card Players

Paul Cezanne, 1892/93 This is the first of 5 Cezanne’s painting series, all of which are currently scattered around the world. However, the exact chronology of the paintings is still being debated about. The men depicted in the painting were actually local farmers near Cezanne’s town. Some consider the painting as a “human still life” because of its muted emotion and lack of drama, popular in the works of that time. It is because of this simple, yet never-thought-of-before concept that has made this painting so valuable. The lack of movement in a simple and natural card game is how Cezanne caught one of the most still acts in an everyday human life. This painting is also one of the most famous inspirations for the popular “Dogs Playing Poker” by C. M. Coolidge.

KIA Test smart cars

This is the 4th generation KIA Sportage since it first came out in 1994. The quality leap since the last model (2010-2014) is high. This model has been produced in Slowakia and designed in Germany, thus the overall quality levels have been adjusted to the European criteria. This is one of the best offers for pragmatic, practical people, thus proving that KIA is creating more demanded products.

The Statement

All the elegant, black details in the car – buttons, choice of material – assert yet again of how serious KIA has stepped into the market of small SUV’s, such as the current bestseller – Tiguan. Even though the model possesses a significant disadvantages which is the price (approximately 40 000 EUR for a suggested equipment), the announcement KIA has made is quite serious. Everything starting from the equipment up until the warranties of 7 years is an interesting offer for anyone. Volkswagen,Nissan and other

46

leading manufacturers cannot afford to lay back and rest on their laurels now – they have a serious competition ahead of them.

Driving

When leaving the city onto the highway, the car seems to go smoothly. The set includes a 7-speed dual clutch, so the feeling on a wide road seems safe enough, especially when driving our roads. The car seems to go rather effortless in the city regime. 185 PS engine is doing it well. And when on highway – 6th and 7th are the gears we keep driving on to stay economic. The gears shift quite swiftly with no unnecessary movements – and that is what one would look for in such a model. On the panel, we see the current consumption charter, as well as an indicator that shows the driver which gear would be the most economic at the current speed. Although drivers usually do not have time to look at such things, it is very helpful indeed. I am currently driving 70km/h and it seems as though I’m driving much slower. It could be explained by the high seating position the car

has, just as in any other SUV’s. The engine seems to be really quiet. I can only hear it when intensely pushing the accelerator. The feeling of driving this car reminds me on some German cars – and this and other features make the car a very serious competitor in the market. The price seems high, yet you can see why – you cannot make a product of such great quality and value it too low. People know what they are looking for, and they always look out for what they are buying. And the newest KIA Sportage is what a smart person would definitely purchase in any circumstances. From the driving point of view, the car is really nice. One must realize that everyone starts to think globally, yet acts locally: a global trend was adjusted to the needs of the local market – so if the market demands, the manufacturer produces. The gas consumption for the model is the average of 6 to 7 litres, which is a good number for an all-wheel-drive. It is also important to take into account all of the tax payments for a car- the less CO2 emission, the less you will have to pay in the taxes. And that is what this car offers – the minimum amount of CO2 emission for a brand new model.

KIA - Inside-out

The shape of the wheel is quite interesting, I must say. And if we talk about the design of it, I would like the middle of KIA brand to be integrated more successfully. It seems as though the designer did not have enough time and left this one thing undone. Placement of the buttons and screen is ideal – just by the reach of a hand, so you do not have to move from the seat while driving. And the music sound system is just as excellent – GBL Sound System for especially selective audiences. Seat ventilation and heat shows yet again how important is the comfort for any car. The panoramic windows on the top make a sort of spacious illusion inside the car. Rear cameras, media interface, and all other advanced safety and technologically features are included in the new model. All the compartments are well-thought-out. The assistants available are of quite a vast choice, for example the blind spot assistance or parking assistance. Although I must admit that some tests have noted that the model could have the function to be more effective. However, it should be more than fine for our local road features.

GT Line

If you are about to buy this car I would suggest to choose the GT Line equipment, as it changes a lot in both the interior and exterior of the car. If you choose the GT line, it is safe to say that the car will be more valuable in the secondary market as well. The options and functions it includes are more vast, and our market is keen on that. GT Line is something worth paying for, as even the little things included go a long way. I always say that about any of the cars, be it may BMW M-package, Mercedes AMG Line, or Audi S line. It is the added value of your vehicle.

Spring 2017 |

KIA Test smart cars

Changes in the Size

As it tends to be that way for all the cars, each model gets larger, longer and more spacious. For this, the wheel base is 3 centimetres higher, and the interior space is 4 centimetres larger. And space does seem quite enough for me - I do not feel cramped, although the back of the car is a bit too small for a larger person. I would also like the seats to be a bit more ergonomically comfortable. Size of the mirrors is perfectly consistent, I can see absolutely everything I need. And the blind zone is also integrated in the mirrors, so even the riskiest of situations are monitored by the technologies of this model.

Exterior

What is interesting that lights have become more narrow, thus making the vehicle look more aggressive, as well as more freshlooking. The new placement of fog lights, however, takes some getting used to. It is not necessarily bad, just very different from other models. You can also tell the quality of a car by the way the door closes – the sound is sort of hollow, and that is a positive indicator. The chrome lining is a quality sign of GT Line. And the grill has also been remade, contributing to the nice look of mere aggressiveness. I thought that the trunk would be a bit larger, more spacious.

Yet it would hold two pieces of large luggage, or baby trolleys. The opening is automatic, as it should be. Optically, the car is well turned out. Overall, KIA has made an important impact on the current VW Tiguan, as well as Nissan Qashqai for that matter. I must admit, even I would gladly own this as my everyday vehicle. KIA as a manufacturer has made an important statement once starting to manufacture and design their cars in Europe. Also, the 7-year warranty is a guaranteed advantage of any KIA model for that matter.

Most of us are dreaming of becoming our own boss – starting up a small business that would grow into a much larger corporation, in years earning more and more money and becoming recognized in the whole world. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Yet somehow, we stop right at the words “you must” and the dreams go *poof*. No worries, we have compiled best of the best advices and facts of the harsh business world for you to become motivated and finally start up that dream company of yours.

What Type?

Consider a few types or directions of the business you might be taking upon. For example, it can be a simple part-time business, set aside your full-time job and maintained as an additional source of income. It could be a shop on Amazon, or even setting up a simple B&B. Or expand

50

your horizons and start a franchise which will guarantee a great support and learning system with a big brand standing behind you. You can also buy a business which bears less risk than starting up a business from scratch. Feel a bit more ambitious? Then embark upon a tech start-up that

will ask for quite a knowledge, however will pay off twice as much. Or broaden your horizons and choose something from popular industries, such as service and retail ventures, online businesses, green businesses or many others. All you have got to do is go outside and get inspired.

Business World Tips

Research goes a long way! And it does not limit to a research of the field you might be interested in, but also the competitors around you and every business that would somehow be linked to yours. It is not just about the idea, it is the presentation and availability of it that will determine the course of your business.

Never listen to words “statistics show that…” That truly is an amazingly anti-productive phrase that will lead anyone to stop what they are doing. Statistics are an excuse – that is all there is to it.

Even though it might seem a great deal of time, and for some even a waste of time, write down everything you might need to start with point by point. And be sure to stick to the plan as you will feel like being pulled in many different directions once starting.

Define and explore your target audience, as they are the main part of defining the success of your business. Gather a focus group of sort to test out the idea. They will tell the honest opinions, as well as point out the possible faults of your product or service. Even though it is difficult to receive critique, you will find it the most helpful.

Spring 2017 |

Do not start a business driven only by money. That will lead you straight to the point when you will not feel like doing it. Instead, choose something that you like or even love, and you will see how fast and motivated the works on the business will proceed. There are going to be plenty of mistakes you will make. It is just physically impossible for one person to know and take into account everything. It is absolutely normal not to know where to start. And it is acceptable to ask for help – your family, friends, local businesses or even your bank.

51

Business smart deal

Anything is possible Your idea might be brilliant, however without the right people by your side it may not transform further than an idea. Always use an opportunity to meet and greet with people of business. Their experiences, faults and success stories will build a strong ground for you to stand on at the very beginning of the process. It is also important to question the people about seemingly non-related aspects of their experience, such as the impact of the business on family, friends, emotional well-being and such.

I Do, Now I Don’t: Although we tend not to think about our failures, this business was built on such. Targeted at people who have been turned down by their potential fiancées, this site allows to sell engagement rings for a price that is the closest to its original value. Blippy: It is a simple and seemingly unnecessary device that links up your credit card and your Twitter account, all for the purpose of letting your followers see the purchases you make daily. Yet, it has raised almost 13$ million dollars.

Bed Bug Barrier: Simple, a barrier that prevents bed bugs from coming up to your bed and biting. Just put it underneath the legs of your bed, and all the bugs will be trapped as they attempt to crawl further. Legal team does not stand for only problematic cases. It is also an integral part of preparation for the business, as preventative and informative measures should be taken as well. Getting to know all the legal aspects before an issue even emerges often saves a lot of expenses during the later stages of business development. It is imperative that you finish what you have started. Once you give up on something in the midst of the process, the gateway will open and everything you do will see no end. Do not choose a partner out of convenience. Do it only if you think it is necessary, and if the partner standing next to you is as driven on the idea as you are. Yes, there will be fights and problems, but if this is the right business match – you will get through it. How to know if the business partner is right for you? Easy – define your goals, morals and future plans on the very first day – if they coincide, you will most likely succeed together.

Accordion Play House

Finally, a hassle-free playhouse that asks for no effort to build it whatsoever. This house is easy to build by children themselves, yet still the best creative space for the kid. A lot of apartments aren’t spacious enough to provide the kid with a little safety-room for his thoughts and imagination, however this unique invention, folding like an accordion, is easy to place in any spaces, and even easeir to fold back into a storage. Even better, the house is designed so that other houses of the same production can be easily linked together – an excellent solution for siblings. The material itself provides a healthy play environment, minimizing the dust and allowing optimal air and light penetration. “The Accordion Play House is perfect for small spaces, but can accomplish big things for every family.”

When the set time comes from the particular action, the Cue Clock will chime and make sure you are doing it. It will also reward you, simultaneously keeping track with your progress. The Cue Clock allows you to work for short periods of time, thus proving the productiveness to be of the utmost efficiency. “As a physical object, Cue promotes real engagement – it feels more like a friend who’s there to help you get things done.”

Stockholm School of Economics The Baltic leader in Rigain business education The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga (SSE Riga) was founded in 1994. Following years of success in business education, including a highly soughtafter bachelor’s programme as well as open and corporate programmes for businesspeople, the Executive MBA programme for experienced managers was launched in 2002. Since then, professionals from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, Croatia, Spain, Israel, India, Canada, and the USA have graduated from this extremely rewarding programme.

“People come here for the changes. Positive changes. We see executives with different goals and strong motivation. We provide systemic knowledge, experience, inspiration, and an international scale and network. We are proud of our competent students, graduates and highly qualified and courageous staff – after all, everything new holds the element of risk and adventure.” – Nellija Titova, Director of Executive Education and the Executive MBA

Executive MBA Quick Facts

• Designed especially for experienced managers and professionals • Two-year module-based programme • Fifteen course weeks • Up to 30 students admitted per year • The class meets once a month for an intensive four-day module • Faculty selected on the basis of their ability to teach experienced managers • One module at the Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden • One module in Asia: Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia • English as the language of instruction • School premises located in the centre of the city

“ I earned my bachelor’s degree in the United Kingdom, and once I made my decision to continue my studies and earn an Executive Master of Business Administration diploma, I was looking for a school with a strong international background, a great and versatile study programme, experienced and inspiring professors, and a flexible timetable that would suit my work schedule. SSE Riga exceeded my expectations, not only providing a high level of education, but attracting wonderful likeminded people who became a huge part of the overall learning experience. The SSE Riga Executive MBA programme, though challenging at times, provides you with a wonderful opportunity to expand your fields of expertise and learn new skills. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to invest in their personal and professional growth.” Ada Mockute from Vilnius, Lithuania Head of Marketing for Baltic region, Citadele Bank • Strong brand name and prominent alumni network • Accredited by the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science • Diploma of Executive Master of Business Administration issued by SSE Riga • The application deadline is June 1, 2017; the academic year begins in mid-August

The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga stands out with its exclusiveness and student-centred environment. We are small in size, yet very professional in our focus areas. The Executive MBA programme is a 15-month programme specially developed for managers with at least five years of managerial experience.

Content of the programme

The Executive MBA covers many of the major business disciplines, including managerial economics, financial economics, cross cultural management, strategic management, global leadership, change management, human resource management, and supply chain management. A group of students meets once a month for an intensive fourday module from Wednesday morning to Saturday evening from 9:00am-6:00pm. Students take only one module at a time. The Executive MBA group consists of 25-30 students with different academic and professional backgrounds. Teaching staff is composed of highly respected local and international lecturers and professors who value experience-based knowledge. Considering the variety of their backgrounds, both professors and students have a lot to gain in the programme through sharing their professional knowledge and opinions throughout the study process. The SSE Riga academic year begins with a “Get Started Week” which presents the concept of creative business and includes team building activities. Students are picked up in Riga and taken to a place outside the city when they still know very little about each other. The goal of such a study approach

“I truly enjoyed the world-class lecturers of diverse backgrounds from Scandinavia, Europe and the US. Each and every one of them had unique practical experiences to share with us as already experienced managers. I already learned a lot during the lively in-class discussions. It was possible to combine the 4-day intensive monthly modules plus home assignments with your everyday life at the office and at home. As our Executive MBA group was a mix of great people from different countries who had different backgrounds and experiences, every lecture, break and afterschool activity was also an opportunity to discuss alternative perspectives and views.” Janno Kuusk from Tartu, Estonia Partner, Sworn Advocate at Sirel & Partners Law Firm

is to isolate students from the outside world, making it possible for them to get to know each other without any disturbances. It is imperative to introduce students to something they have not encountered on a daily basis; this will be useful in their future work. There are two more modules held outside the premises of SSE Riga. One is carried out at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden and takes up to 4 days. The other is held in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia and takes a week. International exchange on such a level is a great opportunity to meet the best Executive MBA students and professors as well as to establish a valuable network in the international business administration field. Currently, similar study trips to Rio de Janeiro, South Africa and South Korea are being developed.

Networking opportunities

To accompany the intense study process, SSE Riga organizes numerous informal events, the highlight of which is Homecoming. This year the school will celebrate its 23rd anniversary, making the occasion even more momentous. “At such events, we aim to bring together people who have studied at SSE Riga but do not meet on a daily basis due to contrasting

“Students get challenged during the Executive MBA programme through assignments, project work and case studies. One very important factor is that the maturity and work experience of the students enhances the quality of the discussions. The students recognise that the programme was worth the financial and time investment!” Uldis Dzintars from Riga, Latvia Board Member, AAS Balta

schedules,” Nellija Titova explains. Besides informal gatherings, SSE Riga regularly accommodates numerous business-oriented events, such as conferences, seminars, courses, book presentations and forums, which help to make the study process varied and exciting.

Admissions process

“Among our students, we would like to see people who have experienced both success and failure. People who have achieved a lot and can share what they have overcome during their professional lives,” Nellija Titova explains. Therefore, not only educational background, but also at least 5 years of managerial experience is a fundamental criterion when choosing candidates. Such experience could be interpreted broadly, but basically it means that the person has worked, managed and directed in the international arena. During the selection process, English skills are verified throughout the discussions, thus determining the applicant’s ability to understand and utilize the language logically. SSE Riga Executive MBA students vary from 25 to 60 years of age, and they represent a wide range of industries, including banking, finance, insurance, information technologies and telecommunications, transportation, wholesale and creative industries worldwide. SSE Riga carries out quite an extensive and intense selection process, accepting only up to 30 people, although this year the School has received over 100 information requests so far. Candidates are also considered for the backup list; in case an enrolled person backs out, we choose the best candidate from this list. The application deadline for studies is June 1, 2017.

Everyone remembers their granny as the sweetest of all – smell of her house, excitement of her stories and taste of her supper. However, there is one grandmother that tends to drive without license, flirt with the policemen, break into a zoo during nighttime, or just shoot paintballs on the pedestrians walking by her house. This is the story of Elsa’s grandmother. Some may call her eccentric or even crazy, yet Elsa considers her as a superhero who imagines wonderful stories of knights, princesses, dragons and castles. Yet it appears that the heroes and villains don’t just live in the stories – they are right here in our world.

The Big Planes Need a Long Runway

Text by Māra Miķelsone Publicity photos

Exclusively for SmartLynx magazine

Aminata is a young Latvian singer who has already participated in international contests, written her own music and launched her debut album – “Inner Voice”. How does she manage to make her stand in the world, yet still doing what all the youngsters should – studying and having the time of their lives? It does not come easy, for sure - but hard work and dedication is what Aminata makes of herself. What’s the story?

I always tell people that I was already born with music. Ever since I was little, I dreamt about becoming a singer. Even when I let myself think that I would work as someone else, such as businesswoman, I would definitely imagine myself singing alongside it. At the same time, I never thought I would be writing music myself. It was only when I reached my 20’s that I realized I was capable of doing it as well. However, I must admit that I did write a song when I was 10 – a song my grandfather had also heard and told me to record it. So, it is written somewhere in the notes, maybe I should look it up sometime. I went to music school, which actually was a decision that I made by myself. My mom was in Germany at that time, and all I did was called her up and stated that I would go to music school. Luckily, she agreed and I was able to start up the schooling. There was a certain period of time during which I wanted to quit, but my mom said that I should finish what I’ve started. After all, it was my decision, so I finished the school. It is funny how up until I was 13, it would never enter my mind that one actually has to learn to be a singer. I just thought I would go to concerts, sing and that was that. So I took upon lessons with an amazing vocal teacher – Nadezhda Buharova. With all of

Spring 2017 |

these activities I was gradually introduced to the real music world. When I was 15, I met maestro Raimonds Pauls. At that time he had a TV show called “Krodziņā pie Paula” where he would invite people to sing. I was one of them, so I went and performed two songs at the show. I remember how humble and shy I was back then, hanging around all these professional and grown-up musicians. When I was 16, I participated in the national selection for the New Wave contest in which, unfortunately, I did not win. However, Latvian singer Jānis Stībelis was one of the judges, and after the contest he walked up to me and offered to be one of his backing vocalists. And thus my first job as a professional singer started, and continued for 3 years. The experience I gathered during this time was truly valuable. Jānis taught me a lot during these years – I would see how all the work in studios, concerts was done, how to organize and work with bands and singers. He also taught me a lot about new genres of music – before it I was all about metal and no other genres were included in my playlist. Until I was 20, I worked as a backing vocalist. After that, I started to think about my future as a solo artist. I would hear a lot of people saying that if you work as a backing vocalist for too long, it is difficult to start a solo career. So I talked to Jānis and decided to no longer work there.

67

Aminata smart music

However, I did not jump right to the solo career I was thinking about. It was quite a difficult time for me. I would think that becoming a singer was just a dream, and that I should grow up already and find a real job. That was also the time I was studying in the university – Business Management and Economics. So, I looked for a few jobs, trying out different options. And after a few failed attempts, I realised that it wasn’t what I wanted at all, so I went back to the job of backing vocalist for a little bit, and luckily – I was accepted back. But not too long had passed as I received an invitation to participate at the Latvian TV show – the Choir Wars. That was the moment I was thrown into the music world, which would coincidentally bring back the desire to sing. It all became a realistic dream again, and I was enjoying every single moment of it. It gave me a certain kind of energy and I felt like I was in the right place. So I continued my journey by participating in various contests. The first was “Ghetto Faktors” which was an amazing experience. And almost at the same time it was the “New Talent Factory”. I wrote and recorded my first song, and the finale of the contest was the right place to perform it.

During the writing process, my mentor atthe-time – Dons – helped a lot. My victory in the contest was a certain milestone, it was now official – Aminata Savadogo is a singer! I felt more confident, so I continued to work with the band I met in the contest. Then came the Eurovision Song Contest with my first song – I Can Breathe. I got the fifth place, but that did not stop me to continue. Right after that, my debut album was launched, and I was on the roll – participating in bigger concerts and festivals. And then came a new form of national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest - “Supernova”. After my triumph, I got to go to Eurovision. After that, my first solo concert was performed in Riga, and then came the Russian talent show “Golos” from which I recently returned.

Being in Eurovision

was so quiet. However, everything was fine – I am a person who likes to bottle it all up – the emotions and energy, which would later be released on the stage. During the contest, I had little time to talk to the participants. Every single minute on the contest was planned in detail, so time for talking and meeting up was quite limited. A lot of people ask me if I was worried by the pressure of representing my country. I wasn’t really, all I wanted was to perform as best as I could and so that people around me would be satisfied with the performance. It was the most important thing to focus on as the emotions experienced would be what I remembered. And I remember the emotions I felt on the stage quite vividly. It wasn’t difficult to perform the same song two times. Already before the contest I was prepared to go out there, give it a hundred percent, and then do it all over again in the finale. If anything, I felt more energized – like each performance would boost even more power. And just as I stepped on the stage for the last time, I started to feel a certain

If I am being honest, I still cannot recall everything that happened during the contest – I was in sort of a trance. But the team around me was even more anxious than I was. They were worried that I wasn’t I am a person who likes to bottle it all up – talking and would constantly ask me why I the emotions and energy, which would later

sadness that I wouldn’t be able to do it again. When I participated in the next year’s Eurovision, I joined only as a song writer, not singer. And honestly, the second time was even more valuable as I could walk around freely, meet new people and go to conferences. I would actually go up to people and introduce myself, and I’m usually not like that. As a result, I established a lot of important contacts.

Being in Golos

The level of this contest was extremely high, especially in the finale. And even though I did not win, the experience I got from here was the most valuable, therefore it wasn’t just about participating – it was far more than that. For example, one of the producers came up to me and said that I was too stiff, that I should be moving more. And that one simple, yet important phrase changed a 68

lot for me – even after my first solo concert a lot of people noticed and recognized the changes in my performance. I must say that in the beginning a certain culture shock took over me. Everyone was saying exactly what they were thinking, and I wasn’t used to that. Initially, I perceived it as a rudeness of sort, but later on I realised that it was all about them being truthful, emotionally expressive. And towards the end of my stay in the show, it was genuinely sad to leave it as people on it were so sincere. For now, I’m not sure I would want to move towards there again. It would mean that I would have to sing in Russian, and that is not my strongest of suits. However, people there are fantastic, audience is so welcoming. After the first video of me performing was uploaded, there were more than a million views in just one week. In Eurovision, in contrast, such number was achieved only after a year. That way I realized that if the Russian audience falls in love with you the very first time they see you – you can be sure

that the affection will preserve for a long time.

What’s happening now?

I want everything to develop in a way that I could do this all my life, but moving up a certain career ladder. I will always remember the thing my vocal teacher told me – the big planes need a long runway. The last month, however, has been not been that energetic. Everything happened at the same time, so I was running non-stop and there was no moment to rest and take my breathe. One of the biggest moments of last year was the launch of my second album -

“Red Moon”. During everything that’s been happening, I even graduated university (a lot of thanks to which I have to give to my coursemates). I would gladly continue my studies, to widen the horizons. I even think of studying music, as I am afraid to repeat myself during the musical career – and that would help me experience something new. It is important to think about the future. Besides music, I am interested in sports – fitness, dancing and boxing. I have always liked dancing, and I used to do it at school as well but never developed it further - music was always one step ahead. I know that I am not an office person as I had experienced that sort of job when practising during the studies – I had to work for 4 to 5 hours a day in the bookkeeping, and I just couldn’t stand it. Song writing makes me feel so much more free, relaxed. I don’t like to be tied up in one place.

In the future…

I would like to try my luck outside the borders of Latvia. To go somewhere other and work for a bit, like Sweden, for example. I like to be on the move, therefore traveling is also quite a dream of mine. I would also want to have a tour in Latvia, and maybe even release my first song in Latvian. And this year I will be participating in the World Choir Olympics, I have already written the title song of this year and now awaiting for the next activities. For now, I continue with the song writing, however I am not sure whether my new album is coming out this or rather the next year. I am currently looking for a new team to work with, as in future I want every single step of my career to be planned out carefully. Therefore, I have taken a break to figure it all out.

The Colours

Although started as a 40-day period which essentially celebrated the existence, death and resurrection of Jesus, nowadays Easter is celebrated no matter what the religion is. As the symbols have become so vast in their variety, anyone can find something appealing to it. After all, it is about greeting spring – the time of light and life awakening around us.

of Easter The meaning behind…

The name Easter supposedly comes from Eostre or Eastre – an Anglo-Saxon Goddess of light and the dawn, having been honoured at various pagan festivities celebrating the arrival of spring. However, there are also recordings tracing to the Latin term “hebdomada alba” meaning “white week” – it was a reference to the Easter week and the white clothes worn by people who were getting baptized during Easter. The tradition of egg-painting considers one source as the Ukraine, where the process is called “Pysanka”, meaning “to write”, as the designs were not painted on but written on with beeswax. Orthodox Christians painted eggs brightly red as that symbolized the blood of Christ. Germans colored eggs in green as to celebrate the Holy Thursday during which the eggs would be hanged on trees. The Easter Bunny dates back to the 18th century, coming from the US, however introduced by the German immigrants. The bunnies were used to determine whether children were good or naughty, similarly to the Christmas symbol – Santa Claus. However, in Sweden they do not have such a concept, instead calling for an Easter Wizard to do the job. During the 19th century, Easter eggs were used as actual birth certificates. Instead of making the long way to the town hall, many families greeted their offspring with a dyed and inscribed egg that was actually

Easter

accepted as a form of identification. During medieval times Easter was celebrated with a fun egg-throwing game – the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg at one of the choir boys, after which the boy would throw it to the next one. And when the clock strikes 12:00, the one with an egg in his hands is considered a winner and could keep it. The Easter parade in NYC dates back to the 1800s when the richest of societies would stroll around the fifth avenue after church service to display their latest outfits and hats. The Parade still lives on in the location, however now including more to see than clothes and rich people. The largest chocolate Easter egg was 25 feet high and weighed more than 8000 pounds. Supported by an internal steel frame, it was made out of chocolate and marshmallows. Easter is a movable feast as the date each year changes according to a lunisolar calendar – it is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Some of other Easter symbols are considered to be lambs, lilies, the cross, palm branches, candles, butterflies and many more. A lot of the symbols, while different in their form, usually embody the same essence – fertility, arrival of spring, light and purity.

History Becomes Real at “Rozengrāls”

Imagine you are in the 13th century - celebrating yet another merchant trip overseas in a medieval dungeon of the local diner, all lighted up with hundreds of candles in wooden candelabras hanging from the rocky ceilings. Folk music all around and waitresses serving rich food of meat, corn and Jacques de Molay’s treasured salad. Nowadays, all of the authenticity of such atmosphere can be found in one place only – restaurant “Rozengrāls”.

Once upon a time…

First as a member of the Hanseatic League, and then turned into the town of Riga in 1201, the city was a place where all the merchant ships flooded in. It was the perfect location for trade, administration and the key of all the Baltic region, even nowadays having the same strategic importance. Then Riga established the Town Council, during the time of which an underground passage was built, stretching right from the currently-known “Rock Bridge” all the way to the Old City, where the restaurant “Rozengrāls” proudly stands.

Custom-made authenticity

“Rozengrāls” restaurant is located in a historical place titled “Vinarium Civitatis Regensis”, which has been mentioned in the writings dating back to 1293. It served as a recognized place of medieval festivities, as well as holds a wine cellar that has been untouched by time. Once you sit down at the custom-made furniture of “Rozengrāls”, you will hear live music by a folk genre band, creating the atmosphere of the medieval era. As the waiting staff comes up to you, you will notice every single part of the clothing they wear are custom-made following the designs of the 12th to 14th century clothing. Even the plates the food is served in are specially made for a complete experience of authenticity.

Medieval dining

Our excellent chef – Sergej Tracevskij – has spent years on researching writings of medieval food and trying out the most different food variations just to create the most authentic menu of all times. Every single dish holds its own historical meaning, combined of the finest of ingredients that actually existed during the times. The pride and joy of “Rozengrāls” – spit-fired piglet meat cooked by the medieval recipe, the preparation of which takes days. The meat is pickled with scented herbs and flavoured spices, then held in our own cellars where it nicely soaks in all the flavour. Then spun on the spit for eight hours on the alder chips with juniper – the meat is served with a rich dish and “Egerdouce” sauce. After a great meal, unique dessert variations will await, such as the pumpkin pie, favourite of Jauffret de Fleuris, pistachio ice cream served on a mount of ice.

The feeling you will experience at “Rozengrāls” is guaranteed to be of a unique taste. Located in the very heart of old Riga, this authentic medieval restaurant will take you to an exclusive historical journey while enjoying a fine dining with your family, friends or colleagues. The surroundings of “Rozengrāls” will quickly immerse you in an authentic medieval period, where every single detail will leave no hint of the modern times.

Start up yourjourney by enjoying the OldFrench Onion Soup. Not only is it one of the most recognized onion soups inEurope, but is also served in a custommade crock that hangs right above freshly burned coal. A large wooden spoon is hung right beside it and topped with a freshly baked bread. Such taste and performance of a food will leave you with the most authentic feeling of medieval dining.

All About That Wine

Text by Māra Miķelsone Publicity photos

Exclusively for SmartLynx magazine

Have you ever wondered how the restaurants you dine in get such good wines, and moreover – how do they know which wine will go with the fish you just ordered? One word – sommelier. “The more knowledge you have, the more valuable of a sommelier you are” – that is how Kaspars Reitups, the outstanding Latvian sommelier, defines an excellent wine steward. And he can talk, as Kaspars acquired the title of “The Best Sommelier in the Baltics”. Read all about the life of a sommelier and gain some insight into the world of wines. Sommelier is not an ordinary profession to acquire – what made you choose it? A lot of different circumstances led me to that. Though the main factor were the people around me who were also caught up in the world of wine, and whose determination, knowledge and passion towards wine spoke to me. It was also the curiosity and desire to do something distinctively contrasting. Something that differs from everything else I had been doing and seeing before. And the more I got to know it, the closer it became to my heart. What are the everyday responsibilities of a sommelier? The main portion of the job passes with various tastings in the restaurant. During morning time, it means tasting and looking for wines and other drinks that would nicely add to the assortment of the restaurant. It also includes tastings with the chef to define which wines would go better with which food. Afternoons are made of preparing for the evening – stocking up the wine cellars, polishing glasses, and making sure that everything is in its place. It is to avoid the awkward situations when you suggest a wine only to realize that it is not available. In the evening, it is time to put the whole preparation to work – to talk with the guests, tell them all about the experiences in the restaurant and to help them create their own experiences in the wine world. There are restaurants that do not limit their working hours only to evenings, however the most demands for a sommelier appear during dinner time, therefore the mornings are usually a bit more unrestrained.

Where can one study wine and practice to be a sommelier? Currently, the situation in Latvia has greatly improved, and now there are various courses offered where one can acquire both general and more in-depth knowledge on wine. Most of such classes introduce you to the theory of wine history, making of wine and the features of wines of each country. The latter is usually accompanied with the particular wines to put the knowledge into practice. The classes by the Latvian Association of Sommeliers are definitely a good way to start the learning journey, at the end of which one acquires a certificate for successfully finishing the course. I acquired my official education in the wine schools of Austria and UK, where I received the diploma of Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET), and currently I am on my way to acquiring the Master Sommelier title. However the most learning I got was from the enthusiasm of myself and my friends, as we read a lot of books and did wine tastings together, thus strengthening each other’s knowledge on wine. Tips from the Sommelier “Do not forget to be cautious while drinking on board – when in the air, the pressure is increased and the amount of oxygen is reduced, therefore the air is drier, and all of those factors combined give a certain feel of dizziness. Therefore, drink a lot of water so that body can preserve the necessary amount of water in the body.“ “Every country that grows vines, hold wine as an integral part of their culture. The style of wine that is being produced in this country, mirrors the climate, history, traditions and cuisine of the country. Therefore, make sure to try the wine that comes exactly from there, and thus you will be able to enjoy the local culture to the fullest.“

84

What does a sommelier have to know to suggest the right wine? Is it only the food the person orders, or do you have to take more into account? Food is important, there is no denying in that. However the most important aspect is to find the right wine that will suit everyone who will drink it, not the food. The tastes and their combinations might be different to everyone – what seems delightful for one person, may be far from that for another. You have to get to know the guest and his taste pallet, after which you both choose a common ground – the perfect wine that will suit the guests and will be a perfect combination with the food they will enjoy. Is it true that a sommelier has to be well-aware of other drinks as well? A sommelier has to know absolutely all alcoholic drinks, as well as tea, water and coffee. They have to acquire the basic elements of bartender’s trade. To be an excellent sommelier, your biggest resource must be knowledge, therefore – the more intelligence you own, the more valuable of a sommelier you are. How does one find a wine that suits him? What features should one be looking for? The only way to find what you would like is to taste, experiment and most importantly – to remember what you liked. Focus on the country, region, grape and look for a correspondent wine. If you tried an Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon of Mendoza region and you liked it – it is worth trying out other Argentinian wines, or wines made of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Those are the features that will help one find what they are looking for in a wine.

Hurghada: Local wines that are not so popular and recognized outside Egypt. Venice: Definitely the famous “Amarone della Valpolicella” that are made of semi-dried grapes, as well as the aroma-full wines from the near region of Friuli.

Blind wine tasting

As people possess different tastes and are of their own individualities, there is no one way to describe a good wine. There are a lot of wine contests where professionals do the “blind” wine tastings – they do not see the brand in order to be less influenced by the producer or price. The medals are granted to those wines that seem to be the most appropriate for their price, style and way they have been made. However, it does not necessarily mean that the wines that do not acquire anything are worse. It just means that each wine has its own place and time to enjoy it in, no matter what the price or medal count is.

Spring 2017 |

What sort of features one must acquire to become the “Best Sommelier of the Baltics”? For me it is definitely the respect towards others and the work they do. It is respect for all - for the winemaker and his wine, for the chef and his food, and for the guest and his choice. I do not know a sommelier that does not love the job he does, or does not own a genuine passion for the work. Those are the two basic values that innate in every single sommelier, and accordingly – make him an excellent at what he does. And to become the “Best Sommelier of the Baltics” you just need a pinch of luck and everything I mentioned before.

Lisbon: Wines from the nearest winemaking regions, such as “Lisboa” or “Tejo”, as well as the famous Portuguese port-wines and the fresh Vinho Verde. Corfu: The full-bodied red wines from “Peloponnesse” and “Naossa”, as well as the crisp Assyrtiko white wines from the Santorini island. Tenerife: Tenerife also produces local wines, but I do suggest tasting some other Spanish wines as well, such as the refreshing and crisp Albariño from Rías Baixas and Fino-type sherries.

SPORTS FANS

Sportegy

Sportegy is a sports organization that operates on an idea of uniting all the athletes and sports enthusiasts of Latvia. First we gathered a team of professionals from different sports and gave them an opportunity to meet with their fans and do some trainings together. We ourselves are huge enthusiasts of sports and for us Sportegy is not a commercial project but more of a soul “thing”. Our mission is to bring sports in each Latvian family and to make it an integral part of their lives.

The Idea Behind

The first thought of the project appeared at the beginning of 2016, when during a cycling training we had a heated discussion on how to train for the cycling sport correctly. So we decided to look for local top athletes, and then realized that we could not only ask them, but also see them perform. Latvia is a rather small country, therefore after meeting with a few people we could finally meet our favourites. The athletes went to see us immediately – they were interested themselves to become trainers for a few times a year and at the same time – meet their biggest fans. In the athletic market of Latvia all people seem to be very responsive, almost everyone liked our idea and people signed up just because of the enthusiasm.

Sportegy smart sport

Then came an understanding on how to unite this and other ideas, which in the end appeared as one of the most interesting sports projects of 2017 – Sportegy.

How does it work?

One can join our organization by acquiring the Sportegy card – the easiest approach to do this is via our website. Before registering, choose an athlete you would like to support and half of the card price will go to his athletic needs. With the card you will have free access to attend all of the trainings conducted

opportunity for them to receive additional finances and meet with their biggest fans. Mainly we organize “SportegyGO” trainings, 7 of which have already been conducted. I wouldn’t call them just trainings, though – they are also meetings with athletes and getting to know their represented sports. And the meeting is conducted in an active way, as introductions are conducted practically. by our athletes, and this means more than 20 unique events in a year. Besides that, you will also be able to use all discounts of Sportegy – we have more than 70 partners in Riga. That means, for less than 30 euros in a year you will be able to train with the best athletes in the country, receive discounts and most importantly – to support local athletes. And that is all there’s to it – no hidden details, just plain enthusiasm for sports.

Keep up with Sportegy We have a lot planned for 2017, the brightest examples of which would be riding on a water Formula 1 with the world champion. So tune in for Sportegy news and events on: www.facebook.com/sportegylatvia or www.sportegy.lv

Meet and Greet the Athletes Sportegy Stars is the team of Latvian professional athletes. We tried to gather representatives of various sports so that the trainings would be of the most different assortments. Currently we have 14 athletes in our team – from biathlonists to motorcycle racers. The “skeleton” of the team was gathered by ourselves, and after that – athletes themselves started to contact us, as it really is a great

An Outstanding Movement “The Red Jackets” is an inspiring movement that has taken upon the job to show the bright and upcoming treasures of Latvia. Their book - “Treasures of Latvia - Outstanding Export Brands and Inspiring Talents” holds stories on the most successful brands of Latvia, each of them followed by an inspirational talent of their choice. And as one of the export brands of this year’s edition is no other than “SmartLynx Airlines”. Therefore, we decided to thank them in our own way – an interview introducing the most inspiring movement of Latvia. Your fundamental mission is to highlight and promote Latvia, its brands and people through their works and success stories, thus creating an impeccable image of Latvia. How did the idea start, and how was it maintained? In 2013 our Movement “The Red Jackets” was founded by people who had already been working in export promotion and marketing fields, where they realized that our export brands lack a uniting story of the place they come from. So an idea was born to highlight the brightest exporters, and thus a multi-leveled “filter” was created, as well as the greatest exporters according to research results were defined. And the award of such exporters was named “The Red Jackets”, the name of which was created as an inspiration from a 88

picture of NATO summit 2006 – ex-president of Latvia -Vaira VīķeFreiberga – was dressed in a red costume, while all the men behind her were clothed all in grey. And it is not just the appearance that was important. This costume symbolized the knowledge, experience and courage. Therefore, “The Red Jackets” award is an award for prominence, courage and self-proving in the arena of the whole world.

What are the activities through which you reach the main mission of the Movement? The activities are of various sorts. Once in two years an “Export Prominence Forum” is organized in which “The Red Jackets” and “Rising Stars” are awarded for new and ambitious exporters, who | Spring 2017

Also, once in two years a book is issued – “Treasures of Latvia” – that tells of not only the prominent exporters, but also inspiring people of Latvia – in culture, architecture, sports, music and arts. We regularly hold inspirational and educational workshops where experiences are shared by our partners and the entitled companies. The company representatives are also assigned as mentors for the new and upcoming enterprises, thus making sure that the new generations also have a chance to shine in the business world. We also participate in other conferences and workshops as actively as possible. We have a good cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the framework of which we tell about the Movement to Latvian ambassadors residing outside the country.

What is your team like, and moreover what are you looking for in a person who might want to join your Movement?

“Treaures of Latvia - Outstanding Export Brands and Inspiring Talents”, the 2nd edition

How did you choose the “heroes” for your book – how was evaluation of export brands executed? There are stories of 35 companies in the book – 25 of them are the large exporters and 10 are considered as the upcoming “stars”. Right after each company, we tell of talents and prominent personalities from Latvia. These people represent fields of culture, music, sports, science and literature. This is the second edition we have issued, and the next book is planned for 2018 with brand new export brands and people.

How did you choose SmartLynx as part of your book?

COURAGE TO FLY HIGH

IN AVIATION SINCE 1992

As “SmartLynx Airlines” celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, we thought it is important to introduce our loyal passengers to the story of how SmartLynx was born. Starting out as “LatCharter Airlines” founded by 5 friends, then witnessing the “Icelandic Period” when taken over by an Icelandic company, and then took over yet again by new ownership – SmartLynx is at its peak and there is no plan to slow down. Read the stories from historical witnesses of the lifespan of SmartLynx.

The Courageous step from 5 friends

Pēteris Ozoliņš, Jurijs Rubenčiks, Sergejs Ščerbakovs, Kiriks Matvejevs and Valērijs Litanskis – all five of them were the founding team of the private airline company “LatCharter”. Team On the left: Pēteris Ozoliņš, representative Pēteris Ozoliņš Member of the Board of tells us about the beginnings “LatCharter Airlines” and success of the company: “It was 1992 when me and 4 colleagues from Aeroflot decided to found our own airline company. At the very first year of existence, when we had not yet acquired all the necessary licences, “LatCharter” was in sort of a waiting period. A year after that, everything started – “TU-134” aircraft was our very first chance which we begun with charter flights. Charter was of a prepayment concept, so it was economically the best solution for starting out. We made our flights all around Europe, as well as provided some to Africa and Asia. We had a lot of projects that included transferring of tourist groups, professional sports teams, businessmen and other very important persons. 90

From 9 private airline companies founded at the same time, we were the ones that survived out of all of them.

It is important to note that from 9 private airline companies founded at the same time, we were the ones that survived out of all of them. Why? First of all, we all knew each other for a long time even before. Second of all, we already had acquired significant experience in the Aeroflot. Three of us had graduated from the Leningrad Civil Aviation Academy, the other two – Aviation Institute in Riga. We were different, yet with the same goal ahead of us. It was 4 pilots and 1 engineer, and we worked in the best team possible. We knew that it was very important to establish our roles at the very beginning, so we did. Although our titles were of such difference, we did the same work at the beginning. And most importantly – we were all invested in the company equally. Up until 1996, the airplane we flew was leased. After that, we bought our own aircraft from the very same company that started to sell out their planes – model “TU-134”. Later on, we already had 2 of them to start out an active flying procedure. However, the flight schedule was | Spring 2017

Anniversary smartlynx

getting very intense for just 2 aircraft, so we decided to acquire our very own “Yak-42”, actually – 4 of them that were more economically beneficial than “TU-134”. We took them to a Russian aviation factory to restore them completely. Two of the planes were immediately sold to Algeria where the president himself bought them. Then the successful period of the company begun. We built our very own office, located right where the current “SmartLynx” is – just a lot smaller at the time. Four years after successful operation we realised that we needed something more modern, as we couldn’t keep flying with the same aircraft. So we leased a number of Airbus models from 2003 up until 2007. In 2007 we decided to sell the company to an Icelandic company “Loftleidir Icelandic/Icelandair Group”. We had invested a lot in the company, therefore the decision to sell was not an easy one. We made sure that the buyers wouldn’t just buy us out and sell the company immediately afterwards. The owners kept kept their promise to develop the company to its potential, therefore the decision to sell it seemed right to us. And to see how far it has gone from the very beginnings, we have not regretted the decision.” When “LatCharter” was acquired by “Icelandair” a lot of changes in the company, including the name, were made. We have met with the current member of the board, VP Safety & Security – Sigurdur Hrafn Gislason, who together with another current member of the board, VP Operations of “SmartLynx Airlines” Hordur Hermannsson (VP Operations) Sigurdur Hrafn Gislason, were the witnesses to the member of the Board of historical changes in the “SmartLynx Airlines” company that made it what we now know as “SmartLynx Airlines”. Sigurdur tells:

International Company Overnight

“I got a call from a colleague who was gathering people to start an Icelandic initiative of purchasing an airline company from the Baltics – “LatCharter”. It was a good company but it needed support for the next step of its evolution, to reach international standards. So the task we were given when coming here was to modernize it. To do that, we brought in a lot of equipment – various expensive software solutions that a small airline would not be able to afford on its own. However, we as a subsidiary of “Icelandair” were able to accomplish Spring 2017 |

that. People from Iceland, Canada, Finland, Ireland, and England were all involved in the intense modernization process, so we could say that “LatCharter” became an international company almost overnight. I believe that from an equipment point of view, we pushed “LatCharter” 3 to 4 scales up. It was all about change. Our goal was to enable “LatCharter” to reach international standards, to grow and expand market opportunities.

Smart and Lynx

We experienced a lot of turnover during that time as it is the nature of a drastic business change. Specialized expatriate personnel was brought in to handle the process – some of them chose to stay, others finished their task and then went on to yet another company. When the dust settled, the result was a robust foundation for a successful, long-running company. “Icelandair” was aiming to create an airline group inside Europe that would eventually be joined by other related companies they owned a substantial stake in, such as “Travel Service” and “SmartWings”. The latter played a significant role when transforming the name of “LatCharter”. We wanted to remain in the same identity, yet integrating the Latvian distinctiveness as well. We took the title “Smart” to symbolize both our origins and characteristics, and combined it with a Latvian symbol which was represented by a wildcat Lynx. We somehow felt the connection to its identity - Lynx is considered as an elusive and mysterious creature that possesses impeccable eyesight and is believed to embody the power of clairvoyance. There is also a star constellation named Lynx in 91

Change of Management

“SmartLynx” and “SmartWings” were about to be made into one brand, however right then the crisis of 2008 happened. All of the subsidiary companies of “Icelandair” went into survival mode. All developments were put on hold. “Icelandair” decided to leave all their subsidiaries to manage on their own, working independently. The times were harsh, a lot of changes had to be made and we were without support from a parent company – it took some manoeuvring but it all worked out, and we survived. The changes in company structure meant that a new management could acquire “SmartLynx” through management buyout. The new company continued to work on ACMI projects, as well as keeping our focus on charter flights. As we were involved in the ACMI business, which is inherently a more flexible business model, it was perhaps easier for us to adapt to the changing market. When the new management took over the company in 2016, there was a lot of talk and doubts about the changes that scared the employees. However in time, they were proven to be more than good. No people were let go, only new positions that were taken on by new employees. Moreover, the volume of the current employees is so big that a plan for a larger office is already approved and ready to be executed.

One of the fundamental strategies for SmartLynx is to have the best local structure, allowing us to successfully compete in the market.

As Zygimantas Surintas – the current CEO of “SmartLynx Airlines”says: “One of the fundamental strategies for SmartLynx is to have the best local structure, allowing us to successfully compete in the market. And it is not just the local market we strive at, but the international as well. We operate in other countries as a semi-company. We’re not flying Zygimantas Surintas, directly under SmartLynx colours CEO of “SmartLynx Airlines” and logo but we do provide ACMI services – leasing aircrafts and staff to other companies, such as Monarch Airlines (UK), Travel Service (Czech), Thomas Cook Airlines (UK) and many others. We are also expanding our business by enlarging our fleet for at least 1 – 2 aircrafts per year. Currently we own 14 aircrafts – 13 Airbus A320 and 1 Airbus 321. And the maintenance of the fleet is kept up to the highest standards, as our main priority is and always will be safety. We ensure the best maintenance staff in our technical department, the improvement of which is ongoing. We already have changed our marketing strategies, and we will ensure that our cost structure is one of the best in Europe, since we want to stay and compete in this business. Our new concept of the company has succeeded a lot in a relatively short time, therefore we have no doubt that the current changes will improve SmartLynx Airlines to the heights it has never reached before.”

For many years now SmartLynx team reunites outside the airport customs to run the marathons of Riga and Tallinn altogether.

“SmartLynx Airlines” support their employees when it comes to sports. With an open sports insurance provided for every employee, SmartLynx staff has the option of choosing a sport of their like. During spring season, running seems to be one of the most popular of sports kinds amongst the staff. And while waiting for the Lattelecom Riga Marathon on May 14, let’s warm up with some memories of SmartLynx team on the run!

Besides running, SmartLynx staff is ready for absolutely anything! Volleyball in the “Brazil Sports Centre”, fighting through the dirty “Strong Race”, competing against other aviation teams in football and preparing for a cycling team yet to be formed. There is nothing we can’t do. Doing these sports is not only the chance to wind out after a long workday, but also to gather up in the same team you work with and do something completely different together. It unites the team, helps to understand each other more outside the frameworks of the job and to become even closer. Spring 2017 |
