We’re paying homage to the oceans and their habitants in the best way we know how; with great lighting! The sea has been captivating our attention for centuries. The fluidity of the tide, the sunlight sparkling off like gleaming crystals and the inky depths stretching into the infinity of the horizon. It has been regarded as contradictory throughout history; powerful yet serene, beautiful yet dangerous. This unpredictable nature ensures that we appreciate the volatility of this natural element that brings balance and harmony to our ecosystem.

The Light

July 27th marks the start of National Marine week, where we take the time to celebrate the marine wildlife that surround us. Did you know that our seas are home to over half the wildlife?

The sea has long been thought of as a magic source for healing, assisting cuts and grazes along with adding a sense of calm contentment. Adding a sense of the sea to our interiors will have the same effect; an immersion into the cool, soothing midst. Calm, sandy neutrals teamed with pale, pastel blues will give the effect of a coastal idyll on a gorgeous summers’ day… Add a touch of gold or copper for a luxury look.

Midnight blue backdrops are a wonderful way to add a more dramatic coastal effect. This look is great with contrasts of golds, brasses, chromes and whites to replicate the glistening ripples of the tide.

The sea softly weathers with its natural saltiness, creating bleached driftwoods. Some designers recreate this feeling in their wooden finishes. Beautiful woods, like treasures washed in with the shore.

For a beach hut look, you can’t go wrong with introducing stripes. This is great for a gentle try of the coveted coastal interior without jumping in headfirst! Introduce strips in accessories with a crisp white, or white and wood backdrop. Keeping it neutral ensures that you can change it with ease if you fancy a change or add more if you’re enjoying the ebb and flow of the design. This is perfect for rental properties as you’re not investing in your design when you’ll be leaving it behind at some point – simply take it with you!

Why not treat yourself to touches of chocolate box interior design in your home or venue? Colours of roasted cacao seeds have an earthy and opulent association. The Aztec emperor Montezuma drank cacao in very large volumes from a golden cup, considered a gift from the Gods, mood lifting and an aphrodisiac. The lightness of hot chocolate, the deep glossy browns of melted chocolate and the rich indulgent chocolate colours can bring a warmth, cosiness and depth to interiors, helping you to create a classy, relaxing and inviting ambience, with a difference. Chocolate shades and neutral tones are humble yet sophisticated and it is a colour gaining in popularity. More of a statement move as not everyone chooses this colour or is indeed bold enough to embrace this trend in their homes, especially on walls. We look at some lights here with creamy, or white shades which work beautifully to punctuate chocolate brown paint colours. Pops of cream coloured lighting bases and or shades accentuate the richness of chocolate colour walls, paired with soft brown and cream fur blankets, you can create a sumptuous scheme.

Whether it be coffee, walnut or caramel shades, brown has so many variations and subtle differences in hues and tones. Choose one that speaks to you. Woods can add texture and an earthy appeal, whilst modern designs with bronze metallic finishes bring a warm, vintage aesthetic into the mix which is great for creating luxury bedrooms, living rooms and deluxe dining rooms.

The Fulton ceiling pendant (pictured bottom right) is a cluster of rectangular bronze domes reminiscent of blocks in a bar of chocolate suspended in a striking cluster arrangement.

2019

An eye-catching design with minimal geometric shapes arranged in overlapping complex layers. This design will give any room a dynamic and fresh look, paired with natural home furnishings, rattan and wood painted in black.

Issue 17

The David Hunt Lighting Collection Odyssey (pictured top right) is a generous, shapely table lamp which is dimpled with chocolate button shapes and finished in a glossy biscuit colour. Complete with a smooth, white fabric shade, which will fit with a range of chocolate shades and pre-existing interior schemes.

C

The Eos ceiling pendant light is made with hundreds of soft, blousy feathers in a gentle light golden brown colour. Frothy feathers are certainly a feature piece to a room. Clever lighting like this can enhance the decoration of a room enormously, while not taking up any space on the ground.

The Light 2019

A 3-dimensional rectangular open frame finished in nickel that boasts a contemporary take on art deco style and design. Doesn’t the white shade compliment the chocolate interiors beautifully? A relaxing, luxury, contrasting palette of colour.

Issue 17

The Hampton ceiling pendant pictured here with mocha colour interior scheme. Soft brown suede furnishings and dusted mocha painted walls highlight and contrast with the white colour of the Hampton shade.

The Huckleberry 7 light vintage cluster pendant. A trendy and quirky light with luxurious chocolate brown cable flex and complimenting ceiling hooks. This pendant can be customised for a unique look. You can drape the pendant arms at various heights and positions with the ceiling hooks. Plus, choosing what look you want with decorative, vintage filament bulbs. The lead ceiling rose, and lamp holders offer a contemporary edge, or we have it in bronze too for a warmer and further vintage style. We also have a white finish version available.

The Light

The lattice pendant light is made with a distinct crisscross pattern like designs found in pastry work or cake decorations. Akin to lacey strings of melted chocolate, the decoration is enhanced by the cream coloured fabric shade. Pearl studded details further accentuate the design and complete the look.

The Rawley flush ceiling light is just perfect for rooms with low ceilings. The arrangement of copper ribbons has the look of curls made by chocolatiers. A beautiful matt-shine brush effect finish. Copper finishes and brown colours work a dream together too.

The pairing of chocolate and orange is not just a chocolate thing. Here you can see how well the copper Rawley ceiling pendant works so beautifully against detailed wallpaper with dark chocolate and orange colours, lavish with detail. Glossy, rich mahogany furnishings and splashes of soft orange is a sure win.

We’ve all heard that oh so recognised statement from astronaut Neil Armstrong that marked the historic moment that man first set foot on the moon. July 20th marks 50 years to the day that the seemingly impossible was accomplished, bringing to light the remarkable advances made in technology and the giant leap made by mankind.

A

In celebration of the achievement we’re looking at lighting that has been inspired from the wonders of space and made possible through developments in design and technology. It’s not quite landing on the moon, but you can still put a moon in your landing! The Lunar range from The David Hunt Lighting Collection shows clear inspiration from the lunar surface in its half moon design. The white and brass finish is rather reminiscent of the lunar modules used in space flight to land upon the moon and with a striking design it’s sure to draw the eye. The Lunar range is available as a table lamp, wall light, 4 light multi arm pendant or 4 light shaded pendant.

G E When you think of the moon you imagine texture and contrast, the Moonface range from Linea Verdace showcases a brilliant contrast of black and silver with a unique texture relevant to its name. Available in various sizes the Moonface pendant is a brilliant choice for lighting over dining room tables or kitchen islands.

We can’t possibly leave out the light fitting aptly named “Apollo” now can we? The Apollo ceiling pendant cluster from The David Hunt Lighting Collection has a beautifully butter brass 7 light suspension with open clear glass globe shades. Add a dramatic impact to any space with the Apollo, team it with some decorative filament style bulbs to complete the look.

2019

The Mercury ceiling lights from The Lighting Book range utilise LED’s to allow the light source to be integrated into the ring-shaped structure. Surrounding a suspended polished globe this creates a very planetary aesthetic.

The Kepler LED ceiling pendant has an illuminated adjustable lens structure, hence its namesake from the Kepler space telescope. This light fitting is perfect for those with their eyes on the latest technology and contemporary design.

Issue 17

The developments made in spaceflight technology is what allowed Apollo 11 to reach the milestone of lunar landing. In lighting it’s the developments made in LED technology that allows new and interesting shapes to be used in fittings – all whilst reducing the energy used to power it!

One or two of these contemporary light fittings in your room and you’ll have your very own galaxy.

Although we’re focusing on the moon here, we wouldn’t be able to behold its beauty or intrigue without the sun. Illuminating through the reflection of sunlight we must recognise the sun too. Our Here Comes The Sun ceiling pendant from DCW Editions is due a mention. The globe shade has an inner cut out to show the lit core to impressive effect whilst maintaining downward illumination.

The Maua wall light from our Monaghan lighting range has a distinctive half moon dome shade and comes in a variety of finishes.

More and more we’re seeing the introduction of an emerging trend that is “half-moon”. Lights which are using a half moon structure are beginning to become more popular and what better way to showcase them than with a celebration of the moon landings?

Our Monaghan lighting collection Qala wall light uses a clever reflector dish design and when teamed with the half moon reflector bulb it produces a unique lighting effect.

The Talk pendant from GROK features two half moon structures each housing LED modules for a sleek lighting effect.

The Andre touch lamp from The Lighting Book has an opal glass dome diffuser with an aged brass base and half moon structure. A perfect lounge or bedside lamp for the lunar enthusiast!

The Icon table lamp in a white and chrome finish has a contemporary design with an adjustable half moon shade making it an ideal reading lamp for a lounge or bedroom.

th Making life a picnic... Issue 17

As the month of July comes around, we celebrate National Picnic Month. Recreating the stress-free charm of childhood picnics in the sun is often a step too far! The picture-perfect bubble is sure to burst when we are struggling with the cool box, chivvying along the kids, keeping the picnic blanket from unravelling whilst whistling for the dog, all before it starts to rain… So, why not recreate the magic of these fond memories in the comfort of our own home? We’ll show you how…

The month of July celebrates National Picnic Month. Us Brits have long enjoyed escaping the confines of the four walls of home and heading out with food that just tastes so much better alfresco. Casting our minds back to our childhood, we can all recall a perfect picnic day where the sun shone without a cloud in the sky whilst we enjoyed the great outdoors full of flora and fauna. Carefree, halcyon days spent enjoying our favourite activities, making memories of quality time spent with loved ones. You will have undoubtably heard the saying, “Life’s no picnic”, as life is not always as straightforward as merely keeping the sand out of your sandwiches. But what if we can recreate the feeling of having your piece of cake with the sunlight on your face, grass tickling your toes with your worries a hundred miles away?

2019

It’s a place to rewind the complexities that being in touch with the outside world all the time have brought on you. A time to breathe, time to contemplate, time out.

f o e t a t s a "A picnic is e d a m e b n a c d n a d n mi anywhere."

Issue 17

We think that having a safe haven in your home that recreates this feeling of wellbeing could well be the answer. Have a space that is informally decorated with the rusticity of nature, cosy comfortable seating and most importantly, free of devices. It will be a place you can seek solace or share quiet time with family and friends, where everything outside your four walls is an inconvenience that you simply don’t need to worry about just then.

A

You can create a space worthy of picnic peacefulness anywhere that is naturally more restful and quiet. It could be a hanging chair in the corner of the bedroom, a cosy seat under the stairs or even a quiet chair in the lounge, but if you want to reap bigger rewards, you may well have to set your sights a little higher. If you can free up an entire room to create your ‘picnic’ ethos, it will pay dividends. Dining rooms are an obvious choice here as they are usually devoid of the normal technological attention grabbers that are associated with other rooms. Ensure that the room is swathed in warm lighting, with rustic touches and natural colours and start to view the space as a worry free and tech free zone. Keep things natural in here, don’t add in mass produced pieces, choose a holistic approach to designing your space. Add in some cheerful plants or flowers and select sustainable and healthy options, such as items with less dyes when choosing your accessories.

Historically, we have enjoyed picnics around the middle of the day, but as we mature, our free time tends to be towards the evening time. A little luxurious touch to the picnic to enjoy prosecco or Pimm’s. What about creating a little sanctuary in the garden? A gazebo, garden structure or a pergola perhaps, a perfect place to pitch a picnic. Leave your worries at the door and enjoy the simple pleasures of food and company to bring a sense of well-being and hope to your home.

Cashing in on potential of the spare room? Turning empty rooms into Airbnb guest rooms; it’s a growing trend for those would like to make better use of their home and increase the household income too. Should you rent out your spare room? It’s worth considering when your spare room has languished without a visitor for months. We’ve all done it! Keeping your childs bedroom ‘their’ room, even when they have a home of their own. Really; when do you reclaim the space? There’s potential for the room to look much better and be the perfect guest room for when they do visit. Revamping this under-utilised room will make visitors to your home more comfortable, but when you do a little extra, the potential to rent out the room to paying guests becomes a viable option. What do todays B&B guests expect from a guest room? Could your home hold the potential to make some spare cash from your spare room? We’ll guide you through making the spare room the light bright space that people want to stay.

PRESENTING YOUR HOME IN THE BEST LIGHT. THE BASICS You’ll need to have the below as the basics your visitors expect.

Issue 17

• A comfy bed with nice fresh linen. • Lighting and lamps • En-suite facilities, including clean towels and toilet paper. • Wardrobes with hangers • Full length mirror, and make up mirror • Hairdryer in the room • An Iron and Ironing board (on request is fine) • Tea and coffee making facilities.

2019

HIGHLY RATED! If you are providing a low-cost lodging, that may be enough, however you may want to attract a higher paying guest who will leave rave reviews, in which case you’ll need to go a step further. Have bright ideas that will see your visitors faces light up. LIGHT FITTINGS EVERY GUEST ROOM SHOULD HAVE Lighting is crucial, it should be cost effective to run so we’d suggest LED is best; you don’t want the extra money you’re earning being wasted by inefficient bulbs. Also, carefully consider the placement of lamps, as this should be kept convenient. You’ll need general overhead lighting along with bedside lamps. We’d recommend wall mounted lights are best, as it keeps bedside cabinets clear, this is worth doing as it makes cleaning simpler and gives more surface area for guests to place their own belongings. Consider additional functionality, as there are some very good bedside wall lights that give a dual source of light, perfect for reading in bed and some even have USB chargers. If space permits for a chair, place a standard lamp next to it and a task lamp on a dressing table or desk.

Bright Ideas for Guest Bathrooms

In bathrooms you could go all out and have an illuminated mirror, they are always impressive. But do ensure all bathroom lights are safe for use in bath and shower rooms, as not all are. For a great selection of bathroom safe lights explore The Lighting Company. Add toiletries in dispensers, it looks nice but also people are less likely to swipe them. Otherwise people feel toilettes can be taken home. Put little placeholders explaining what they are.

Most guests will expect tea and coffee making facilities, but here is another area where you can go the extra mile. If the coffee is your own blend, take the time to explain what you blend, or if you have local teas made in the area, explain the heritage. We have a local variety called Miles Tea blended right here in sunny Somerset. If you are in Yorkshire, have Yorkshire tea, maybe add a little description taken from the packaging. We’ve mentioned here lots about informing your guest of all the lovely extras you are giving them; this all helps you to promote your guest accommodation, which is also useful for marketing when you list the room. You could put together a guest welcome pack, stating what the bed linen is made from, the pillow selection or anything interesting about your locality.

The Light

It’s also useful to include the house rules in this pack. If you want guests to have finished breakfast by 10am say so (nicely of course but make it clear). Perhaps just saying:

Let guests know the frequency that you change the towels and sheets, and at what time. If guests know what to expect, there’s no reason that their reviews will be anything but realistic.

Issue 17

“I’d love you to have a wholesome hot breakfast I’ll prepare it for you at 9am sharp it will be piping hot and ready for you. I prefer to be cleared away by 10am, unless we arrange in advance”

Quirky Unusual

What is it about your area that is unique? Are you right in the heart of a city or a rural idyll? List the facts about the area and keep abreast of what events are happening locally in order for you to capitalise on them.

Homes, be they large or small, often have unused or rarely used rooms (the spare room). But for some of you it may be a garden studio, outbuilding or even a shepherd’s hut. According to many travel companies, guests are seeking out quirky holiday stays, so your unused space may well be the perfect place for an occasional guest. Or a whole new business venture.

Considerations

2019

It’s truly a spare room when you don’t have to use it. You may have a spare room that looks remarkably like a cupboard full of clutter, that running machine you fully intended to use, but didn’t. Renting this space out could give you cash in your pocket, but if you value your privacy more than the cash - don’t rent it out. But do consider that it could be more appealing even for your family members visiting. This also gives insights into the costs and the Take the time to make the spare room nicer - give it expected gains along with advice on how you get the some love, decluttering and freshening it up can stop room listed and photographed ready to market. it being a dumping ground.
