We will explore how lighting has adapted over periods of time, yet a nostalgia for heritage designs remains, is enduring and beautiful. What is distinct about British design and tastes?

B

The Light

Each epoch in Britain’s rich cultural heritage leaves behind its own distinct style of language, architecture, art and interior design.

We will look at how lighting has evolved from medieval lighting to Edwardian grandeur through to the iconic retro lighting of the 40’s and 50’s. Today we look at the charm and quality of our heritage and explore why British lighting is held in such high regard worldwide. So, what is a quintessentially British lighting style and fashion? Period homes and properties can be darker, so bringing the right lighting into the design of a room is vital, especially lighting that meets the modern needs of the times.

C

We look at lighting which is inspired by British heritage with a 21st Century edge. A notable contemporary style honouring timeless design pieces is seen in lighting designs of today. We’re excited to share with you some of our top choices that epitomise our shared history and heritage for 2019. National Trust heritage homes, properties and castles are remarkably popular, people come in their droves from all over the UK and beyond to visit them. The National trust owns over 56 villages in Britain and has over 5 million members and visitors in the region of 30 million (source; National Trust website).

D

Annual reports indicate that hundreds of millions are spent on conservation each year.

2019

We wonder; why do we love the feeling of visiting country homes and houses across the UK? A vision of a perfectly preserved past is restored with careful attention paid to each detail, including restoration and sourcing of authentic replicas.

Issue 14

E

Some of you may own a listed home or cottage? Perhaps you are keen to emulate the style of the property’s origin in its interiors? Tying in complimenting lighting to the style of property is a detail that can be easily overlooked. Lighting is often the focal point for a room’s decoration as well as providing illumination. We urge you to look up and consider, are you making the most of your lighting?

Have you ever wandered around a country home and thought to yourself, or said to the person you are with;

e n i g a m i "Can you " ? e r e h g livin What would I be doing? As the scene builds from the garments and jewellery of the people hanging on the walls, it sets the scene for contemplation. Carefully positioned chairs, lights and rugs can feel like a stage in which you imagine the characters in the play. New York Lighting Collection VENETIAN RAIN outdoor wall light

Feiss BELLINI 6 light bronze finish and crystal chandelier

For some it may be a feeling of walking in the same footsteps of those before us, appreciating history itself. For others it may be the immaculately consistent impression typical of interior designers of the past, such as William Morris, who would often create a whole look for a room, adorning it with cohesive lighting, furnishings and architecture. Compared to a pick ‘n’ mix of styles today which sees more of a separation of architects, artists and designers with a more narrow and specific focus of their own. What do you feel when we are in period homes and properties? A time that predates mass manufacturing and cherished possessions lovingly made by hand which are still standing the test of time. When they are careworn, we believe this only adds to their vintage charm. The feeling evoked from a building or room may be imparted onto us. Sometimes it is just “a vibe”, a sense of the spirit of the times, or zeitgeist, like steeping into a time capsule which holds secrets of the past. We can see in today’s lighting designs many different eras, but instead of being a thing of the past, these styles are not going anywhere, they have a timeless quality and instead of becoming extinct are reimagined for today. We can see a resurgence throughout British style history in multi-arm candelabra style chandeliers which instead of being adorned with candlelight are now purposed with bulb fittings.

Distinctly classic charm exudes from the structure and finish of the Plymouth chandelier (pictured right). Re-purposed in a barn setting, offering an eclectic interior. David Hunt Lighting is a British manufacturer specifically designed for lighting period homes and properties. Inspired by heritage yet cleverly adapted to present lighting requirements with a contemporary style edge. A tactile quality is bestowed into each detail with fine finesse and precision artistry. For a look that is quality assured.

The Joshua (pictured right) kindles a sense of the British countryside we call home. The wood effect, rustic shapes and earthy textures will evoke a sense of the countryside in your home. Also adding a touch of opulence with the gold metallic hard-backed linings of their luxurious silk shades. Coupled with sumptuous fur blankets and wood accents this collection will truly relax you. Perfect for older style properties or adding this country charm to more modern rooms.

Grand Georgian architecture across the UK especially in the cities of Bath and Oxford is home to a distinct style of heritage property. After the candelabra saw the rise in popularity of the chandelier, signifying a move from gas power of Victorian times to electricity interacting with design possibilities. They are a grand focal point for rooms. Shown here is the Gianna, a classic Edwardian style chandelier, perfect for high ceilings. Made with silver and crystals it lights a room with an elegant sparkle, capturing and reflecting light with a mesmerising magnificence. Sure to delight your senses.

The 1940’s and 1950’s were exciting times for British lighting design. The hallmarks of this era are integrated into current lighting design whilst offering a unique, contemporary edge.

The rise and fall school-style pendant (pictured left) depict the iconic and ever-popular retroindustrial style, re-conceptualised with a beautiful polished copper metallic finish. Versatile lighting made in Britain with a rise and fall feature so you can adjust the height at any time. Ideal for kitchen islands, dining room tables or accentuating an area.

Original BTC’s aptly named London desk lamp (pictured right) encompasses all that is so captivating and cool about London style, a sleek, practical and relaxed style, ready for the bustle of life. The London table lamp has a retro fashion made with a contemporary and functional aesthetic. Beneficial features include an in-line rocker switch, a twisted braided flex cable which seamlessly sweeps through the curved stem, ensuring no tangling of wires and the white painted inner offers the maximum reflection of light, necessary for reading and work stations. The combination of a chrome base and black finish on the shade and stem gives this light a current look a. A classic example of contemporary meets vintage in a time-honoured style.

We love sharing our knowledge with you and hope it’s inspired and re-kindled that passion for making the most of your precious homes with heritage lighting with a twist.

ENVIRONMENTAL TACTILE NATURE Earth day is marked on the 22nd April each year worldwide so here at The Lighting Company, we look at what this day means for lighting. We have decided to put a spotlight on lights that mimic the beautiful materials found in earth, without having to disturb them from their natural habitat.

This table lamp rather cleverly looks just like a mineral-treasure dug from the earth from millions of years ago. It is credit to the designers and artistry of the makers of this light that they have managed to create a stone effect without quarrying with stonejesomite.

As we become increasingly aware of protecting our earth and its resources, we look at the clever ways lighting designers approach this new environmental challenge by replicating and mirroring the beautiful textures, patters and effects of the earth’s materials. We look at how else we can reduce the impact of lighting by choosing LED lightbulbs.

n e e r G o "G . . . " D E Go L How else can we help protect the Earth on Earth day? The Lighting Company recommends using long lasting light bulbs, or LEDs. This will help reduce the economic impact of lighting in your home enormously.

Why are LEDs so much better than old style bulbs? • • • • • • • • •

Long-lasting-most keep going for up to 25 years They do not waste energy on heat (only 5%) A cool light is better for plants They are 80% more efficient than fluorescent or incandescent bulbs Low maintenance no bulbs to change for the life of the fitting Reduce light pollution There is no “flicker” when you turn them on They do not attract insects Mercury free and generally safer bulbs

COLOURS AND TEXTURES

The Light

D

Colour can cause a huge debate; whilst a royal blue ceramic may sit perfectly in a white washed room, a bright cerise or orange may not. So, which colours suit a New England look? Pale pastels are perfect, and blue and white is always a perfect pairing! Pinks, corals, taupe or teal can be a delight when teamed with pale backdrops, using natural jute rugs, white washed wood, basket weave, and the occasional antique chest, desk or console table which brings a homely feel when topped with a statement table lamp. Textures are tactile and soft, so for throws and cushions choose wool, faux fur, linens. Accessories such as ceramic pots, glass jars, vases filled with large blousy silk flowers, such as roses or hydrangeas are great for impact. Echo the colour in your pictures or cushions. Do use colour sparingly though. It’s best to use just one or two highlights as it is all that’s needed.

Typically, American New England Homes – ‘the dream home’, are actually believed to replicate the vernacular of South East England. It’s almost an idyllic nostalgic view of England when in reality, most homes in the UK are darker and colder than the American homes. Born from the pilgrim settlers wishing to have a better version of their homelands. Add plenty of lamps as light levels in our (broadly speaking) smaller UK homes needs to be good. Here at LightingCompany.co.uk there are some great light fixtures to inspire a new, New England look for your interior.

LIGHT FITTINGS AND LAMPS

Over the past few editions of INTO the Light, you’ll have noticed that we are championing the #optimisticrevolution; looking on the bright side. I’m sure you’ll all agree, light is a positive medium for happiness. So much so, that when the word ‘light’ is added to other words it can lighten the meaning. Add "light" to "touch" that ‘light touch’ makes things beautiful. When it precedes the word hearted as in ‘light’ hearted, it denotes fun and laughter. Add light to your home and you’ll be surprised how different things feel!

Choosing large light fittings may seem a touch decadent in a small home and could seem insurmountable, but don’t be an introvert about your style, let it shine bright. Oversized lights are big - literally - and it’s a big trend too!

We often talk about the virtues of good lighting and so many people know what good lighting feels like and admire it when others make brave choices. We hear people say, “I’d never have thought that would work, but it does!”.
