Happy birthday, Bauhaus!

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Bauhaus!

"A rch it wh e r e en gi n e

2019 marks the centenary year of Bauhaus… We take a trip down memory lane to see why the concept became so popular then and why it’s still so relevant today. You may not have come across the term ‘BAUHAUS’ before, but you will have certainly seen interior designs that are influenced by it. ‘Staatliches Bauhaus’ was an art school that was formed by an architect in Germany in 1919 that ran until 1933. The term literally means ‘State Building House’ which was widely referred to as meaning ‘School of Building’ and its aim was to create an all-encompassing art school whereby art and architecture would be brought into synchronisation. The Bauhaus style became one of the most compelling influences in modern design, art and architecture until the school was forced to close ahead of World War 2. The staff and students then emigrated, taking the idealistic formulas across the globe. The key to unlocking this iconic look is modernism and it’s this that sees the look still being relevant today, exactly one hundred years later. Engulfing top styles of the era, we see popular traits reconceptualised into a look all of its own. Strong geometric shapes have more than a hint of Art Deco providence which are re-worked into a more cubic or abstract style. Strong pops of primary colours with simple shaping made for impressionistic works of art. At a time where the Arts & Crafts movement was prolific, Bauhaus challenged the concept with works of art that could be mass produced and therefore made more readily available to the majority of the population.

A

By looking at the threedimensional impact of a structure, more interesting shapes and effects could be formed. This ceiling pendant has the added benefit of adjustable arms which can rotate independently enabling both the aesthetic and the effect of the light to be altered with ease.

It’s the teaming of the architectural, sculptural elements with artistic flair and more modern materials that we see still having a relevant impact on our lighting designs.

B

Using unconventional materials was a popular concept and the concrete range of lights with different coloured inners combines this with the pop of colour we expect to see. With gentle geometric shaping, these are a notable example of how this look remains so contemporary to this day.

Effortlessly simp these add a bas silhouette with subtle pop of co This is a conserv take on this sty

Still making a modern impact today, these lights could easily have been a concept from Bauhaus. It’s striking use of geometric structures with cuboids gives a tantalising three-dimensional effect from every angle. With two designs available, the look alters when they’re on to create a wonderful variation from day to night.

Utilising contrasting shapes, the angular gold geometric structure acts as a frame outside of the opal glass globe, sitting pearl like within.

Dark S L

ighting up the skies is generally deemed as detrimental and people largely agree we should do something about it. Or do we? What do we even call it; skyglow, light pollution, diffused luminance? It’s possibly widely agreed amongst scientists that the ‘joe public’ already understands, yet if we do truly comprehend, why haven’t we already acted? Perhaps most of us feel that light pollution can be solved easily; just turn off the lights! But we don’t. Is it habit, fear of the dark, or simply because we want to be able to use outside spaces safely and not trip over?

Firstly, let’s look at what light pollution is. We all know that you can’t see as many stars when the streets are brightly lit, but does that really pose a problem? After all, we just need to visit somewhere more rural, where the night sky twinkles into life. But that’s not the extent of the issue, which has a far-reaching impact on wider topics, for example, nocturnal animals, which are becoming confused by us turning night into day, disrupting the feeding and breeding patterns which is making many nocturnal animals rarer. Protecting our animals and insects keeps our world balanced, with a healthy eco system. Another consequence is wasting energy; lighting above the roof lines is not needed and with a limited resource of this valuable energy; why waste it?

B

Here at The Lighting Company, we’re living and working on the edge of Exmoor National Park, so are well aware of the challenges of working in a dark sky reserve. Even in the most rural locations, we still need to live and work and in winter months it can be really dark; much darker than in towns and cities. We generally see far fewer, or sometimes no street lamps in many areas and whilst this does have benefits, we still need some light surrounding our homes for practicality. The ‘International Dark Skies Association’ designated Exmoor as the first ever Dark Sky Reserve throughout Europe in 2011 and as things became darker, we in turn, became more accustomed to the darkness. A buffer area of reaching approximately a mile and a half around the circumference surrounding the reserve required homes to also limit the light emitted from their properties. Homeowners and tenants in the locality looked for better exterior lighting; not to be brighter, but to be darker. We were able to use our expertise and knowledge of lighting to ensure that we could offer a plethora of lights that meets the needs of homes, nocturnal visitors and stargazers alike. Our mission to provide a large selection of lights that reduce light emitted in an upward direction began many moons ago, predominantly to avoid upsetting bats in line with supporting evidence from the Bat Conservation Trust. It highlighted the plight of nocturnal animals whilst being aware that the homeowners’ needs must also be considered. Lighting controls allowing lights to only come on when required, channeling the light downward below the roofline gave homeowners peace of mind.

Skies C

Following lessons learnt from our experiences in the dark sky reserve, we have some simple advice for those wishing to help lower light pollution. • Avoid using flood lights • Use downward pointing lights that are shielded to prevent upward light • Use PIR or timers to limit when the lights come on • Allow your eyes to adjust to darker surroundings before reaching for a light switch • Take a torch outside if you don’t need to light the entire garden • Light trip hazards or steps with a low level of light, such as path lights • Mount lights lower on the building to keep light localised at below 6ft -7ft • Sitting in the garden in the evening, opt for table light directed downward

So why don’t you challenge yourself to use light in a smarter way? Be one of the enlightened.

f you’re an avid reader of our magazine ‘INTO The Light’, you’ll know we are on the war path arming readers with the inspiration to banish the blandness of homogenous home interiors. We’ve started the ‘optimists revolution’; our very own campaign to bring bright happy home inspiration to the nation.

Last month we championed bright colour pops but appreciate that not all of us are the same; personalities and colour can divide opinions. Many prefer a quiet simplicity within our homes so this month we bring natural elements to the fore. Rather than rage against bland this month, we ever so calmly reclaim our halcyon homes. To live as we want to live, in calm, informal and happy homes filled with humanity. If you adore relaxed informal environments spending time with family and friends, or the joy of tranquil alone time, this naturally optimistic look is sure to inspire you. The basis of the look is objects and materials created and crafted, made by people; touched by humans. Refocus and balance your home, bringing that happy relaxed informality that uncomplicates your thoughts, retriggering a sense of optimism that everyday stresses try to cheat you of. Changing how you live and the space you live within, can have a huge impact on your mood. Businesses that centre around hospitality spend a fortune on interiors, with an aim to bestow that emotive connection between the brand and you. It’s strange that often we identify with the coffee shop down the road that makes us feel at home, yet often at home, our style can fail to resonate as much.

Fresh bright natural elements include furnishings, basket weaves, cotton rich linens and all-important light. The palest of woods, rattan, ceramics and enameled objects blend effortlessly to create a backdrop for artisanal story telling. This is where only restricted objects that n relate to your sense of style are chosen but ensuring that they are handmade, or unique in some way.

The Light

Our homes are our haven so create your own sense of you, whichever room you dwell in; be that a casual dining room, carefree kitchen, or calming bedroom that cajoles you to have lazy Sunday mornings to restore your soul. Living room styles that match your lifestyle are easy to create. All you need do is plain and simple, by just adding little light touches.

Brightness comes from light fittings, versatile lamps and punctuated pendants lights. Don’t settle for dull, but instead, lift with interesting materials. Introduce lighting that is hand crafted. Some of our favoured looks utilise wooden elements or metal and rattan weaves. The interesting surface details, natural textures, open shelves and ceramics. The look works in every room of the home, which is great news as once you embrace this look in one space within your home, you’ll want to continue the feeling of natural optimism.

Issue 13 2019

You cannot beat the natural style; it’s not a fad or fashion, it’s a lifestyle change that puts people at the heart of the home. This look has longevity, a timeless charm that Nordic nations have understood and lived for lifetimes. The Danes are reputed to be the happiest people; could it be they live the lifestyle we call naturally optimistic?

Listed Properties

L

isted Buildings are a joy, the pretty homes we covet, chocolate box cottages with history and heritage aplenty. Owning a listed building, however, does come with constraints that many other home owners never need to consider. One main area that leaves many a historic home owner in the dark, is lighting! Are you unenlightened about what type of light suits your period property? Here at the Lighting Company, we have plenty of experience in this and can advise you which genre of lighting you will need if you are able to change your lights. The first consideration is whether you need permission to change your light fitting. If it’s a special feature of historic interest, you most likely will need to obtain consent when looking to see if lighting could be considered a special feature is not exactly clear. There are obvious exemplifications, for example, if the listed building was a light house; you couldn’t really take the light away without seeking advice from a specialist in listed buildings. But in a medieval home there was no lighting and you’ll need to add some to enable you to enjoy your home in this Century. The first port of call is seeing what your listing is for and ask if you are unsure; err on the side of caution and make sure you have all the answers before you make any changes. There are many rules and regulations which can leave you feeling confused, for example, you’ll definitely need listed building consent to add exterior lights to a commercial property that has listed status, but what about to your own Georgian town house? It’s no wonder that many homeowners are left unsure what changes they can make whilst they are custodians of their little piece of history. As a general guide, if there is already a light socket there, you should be able to replace that light for a new one, however, recessing spotlights into a lathe and plaster ceiling is likely to be a no-go! It would alter the fabric of the building and many electricians would be wary of attempting of using these in an old home, even without listings, because old plaster can be temperamental. If you’re a fan of this look, we have some spotlights that are surface mounted that bring a good deal of light with a bit more personality than sunken spots. We’ve been asked often, how to strike the balance between modernity and heritage as lighting in the form we use today, may not have been used at the time the historic home was built. Often owners of historic homes wish to replicate the look of the period interior without turning the clock back on modern day conveniences, such as going without lighting. Echoing the spirit of the era, the materials, colours and interior fashions of the day is one way of striking that balance. You will need an artistic re-imagination of lighting from the era, an electrified version or replica of an antique style light.

"You're my wonderwall" Wall lights are often underutilised in our homes yet once you have discovered the beautiful illuminations that they can create, you won’t ever want to be without them. Wall lights can provide task lighting for home offices, reading lights for bedsides, ambient light for living rooms and even picture lighting to showcase favourite artwork. It’s this versatility that escapes some lighting designs, most often, to their detriment. Wall lights can accentuate architectural interest in a room, or perhaps a sculpture whilst providing additional ambient light.

So, we will show you the benefits of lighting up your walls with a selection of our favourites. We have hundreds of wall sconces on offer in designs to suit all ages and styles of property, including medieval, period, retro through to contemporary styled wall lights. In this edition, we have highlighted a modern and a traditional solution for each purpose.

Relaxing Ambient Lighting Wall washers and wall sconces are designed to wash light up against the wall. This makes the ambient light that they produce naturally soft and atmospheric. They are great at spreading the walls of the room into our eye’s peripheral vision, making smaller rooms feel just a little larger whilst keeping the floor and sides clear of clutter.

Do you have a tricky ceiling that needs lighting? Sometimes, we are faced with challenging ceilings that make using a ceiling light complicated, or impossible. Wall Spot Lights

E

F

A contemporary design single wall spotlight in a white finish with copper detailing. Being LED lit makes it very energy efficient using low wattage but providing a high output.

A traditional industrial style polished brass wall spotlight with adjustable shade. Great for lighting in a kitchen setting with a period aesthetic.

The Light

Wall spot lights offer a focused beam of light in an unfussy manner and often comes as part of a matching set with ceiling spotlight bars. Used together, they look great in kitchens and utility rooms. Predominantly, these will have a rotatable light and can be tilted, making them ideal for areas where the light needs a different focus depending on the task in hand.

Bathroom Wall Lights Wall lights in bathrooms are ideal, as they are often amongst the smallest rooms in our home. Freeing up space for our all-important pills and potions, they continue to offer task lighting where we need it, perhaps over a mirror. Or they can also be used without the ceiling light to create a softer light that’s perfect for a long soak in the tub.
