LIGHTS WE ALL LOVE; GENDER NEUTRAL
INTERIOR DESIGN COURSE
ILLUMINATING WELLNESS
Issue 16 2019
Gender Neutral We explore how gender neutrality is showing up in the home interiors of today. Back in the dark ages, it was always the man’s job to deal with electrical and mechanical things, leaving the women to focus on the ‘decorative bits’. There were always been ‘blue’ jobs for boys (like emptying the bins and mowing the lawn) and ‘pink’ jobs for girls (such as cooking, or a spot of ironing (how lovely))! With regards to home improvements, men used the power tools and women did the pretty bits.
A
To be honest; it was an easier job being a woman then - all you needed was the ‘je ne sais pas quoi’ that is that woman’s touch, and hey presto, it looked like home. Many of us know that it’s not always that simple to pull a look together as it is a collaboration between partners that share the same space. I say collaboration, often it’s more a case of negotiation. We’ve all been there when two people who share their homes yet do not share the same sense of style.

B
Traditionally, women have opted for pretty styles of lighting such as the feminine chandeliers whilst men have opted for functionality over fashion. However, there is a shift, no longer do the stereotypes ring true. We’ve all gone gender neutral and it’s fun! Pink is a colour; no longer just a girls colour in the same way that blue is not just for boys. This revelation means designers can mix it up a bit creating some fresh new looks for homes. And ‘rinky dink pink’ seems to have caught on big time. Resonating with the home interiors sectors, pink has become an on-trend colour in the home. You’ll see it used in soft furnishing, wallpaper, paints and light fittings. Before you worry, it’s not all about going too far with pink. It’s actually rather more grown up, being kept simple no frills and flowers just simple calming chalky colours.

Surrealism
Artists often play with the way we see things. Exploring new ways of seeing ordinary objects. Are we getting bored of humdrum objects and humdrum homes? How many times can we view the same thing without reimagining it or re-purposing it? Is surrealism the way forward to experiencing more exciting, surprising and curious spaces?
The Light
B
An alternative artistic concept is to experiment with how things are viewed and interpret them differently; we can do the same with lighting. There are lighting designers who also conceptualise with different light fittings. Creating unique lighting solutions is what The Lighting Company loves and we enjoy keeping abreast with all that is new and predicting the latest lighting trends.
C
Surrealism was no doubt a highly influential art movement and we are seeing surrealism as an emerging interior trend. It is great for homes or hospitality venues where you want to play with your space. An element of surprise is key to this look.
D
Fantasy and reality become a blur and you could curate scenes which remind you of a dream, plays of context, where objects “should” usually be and turning this on its head. The feeling you get when you see something surreal is almost amusing, in an arty way of course! Such as when an object seems out of the ordinary, or out of context, it draws you in and is memorable. For interior design this means having fun creating juxtapositions where hypermodern meets historic. It’s a sure way to help make your space as unique as you. What could you create that is original and unique to you?

Bespoke and customised light fittings or shades allow you to imagine things differently, whether this be extra large fittings or light bulbs? Or it could be creating a light you want in an unexpected colour; how about some purple antlers? It’s certainly a way to stand out from the crowd.
The Yoy table lamp is out of the ordinary, sure to surprise and delight, created with heaps of imagination. This table lamp is hyper-contemporary, so going with the surreal vibe, why not pair this with something you would not expect to see it with in your interiors, like a vintage or medieval tapestry perhaps? There really are no rules, except to break them!

Home is where the heart is. It’s where we rest, it’s where we spend quality time with loved ones and it’s where we can socialise with friends. It’s a constant in our lives, strong and reliable, where we can relax and take time for ourselves. The home is therefore an obvious place to centre your plans to create an escape from the stresses and strains of the outdoor world and to promote our health and wellbeing. It’s a sign of the times that nearly 13 million people in the UK are seeking advice annually on their mental wellbeing. It’s hard to ascertain whether it’s the stress and strain of being constantly connected to the wider world, or it’s just the sheer pace of life that sees us falter, but one thing is for sure, it’s a brilliant outcome that people are more aware and are finding a number of sources are becoming more readily available to them to address it.
We at The Lighting Company, value people and have introduced an in-house app, to help staff deal with life’s moments. We understand that our customers have to be reliant on creating a positive wellbeing for themselves. Let us share some of the mindfulness we’ve learned on our journey. Mindfulness; what is it? Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. There are many things that you can tweak in your home to create little pockets of peace that will lift your spirits. Don’t be overwhelmed, just tackle one job, one decision or thought at a time. So, what are the changes you can make in your home to increase your wellbeing?

Choose bedding that makes you feel relaxed and cosseted – it’s not a one-shoe-fits-all approach, this is for you to select what makes you feel good. Lighting a bedroom needs to be convenient. You don’t want to get out of bed every time you need light – that’s not relaxing at all! Always have a light at arm’s reach from the bed; wall lights and table lamps are ideal for this and many come with a reading light for added comfort.
The Light
Let's start in the bedroom... Keep those thoughts clean; we’re talking sleep! Bedrooms need to be a sanctuary where you can retreat to relax and have good quality, healthy sleep. In order to achieve this, you need to have ample storage for clothes – nothing is more jarring than gaping drawers and open wardrobe doors. If you can’t get enough storage in the room, consider bagging up seasonal items and storing them in the loft until you need them again.
Choose suitable window dressings for the light levels you feel most comfortable with; some people like total Whilst we’re on the subject of reading, it’s much better darkness whereas others may like natural light in the to read a book or magazine at this time, then straining room to keep in touch with their circadian rhythm. your eyes on the screen of a device. Creating little quiet corners will be a challenge that some of us will be unable to overcome due to smaller rooms, but you can subtly zone your living rooms by using lights. For example, if you position a chair in the corner of the room with a floor lamp, you can sit quietly and read with the rest of the room in darkness – no cushions requiring plumping in view! Equally, if the kids are having a mad 5 minutes, you can light the rest of the room, but have the floor lamp off, creating your own little calm bubble. Table lamps are also really useful for zoning the light, as are wall lights.
The Light
Our living spaces have changed over the years beyond recognition. From having a formal parlour in Victorian times that were only used for visitors, our living spaces are now zones for socialising, chilling in front of the TV and playing with your children – they do more so they need to deliver more.
Consider the colours in this room too. Relaxing tones such as chalky lilacs and hints of pink are great at providing a positive energy, whereas if you’re after a more calming ambience, shades of pastel blues and sage green are a sure win.

Using good lights in the kitchen will help to avoid eye strain which in turn leads to headaches. Make sure all the worksurfaces have a good spread of light and choose pendants for over dining areas. The ceiling pendant, or row of three (yes, it’s the magic number!) helps to create an intimate space which is perfect for family mealtimes or a cosy dinner party with good friends.
The Light
Just as valid as ‘home is where the heart is’, is ‘the kitchen is the heart of the home’. It’s a place where you gather to discuss the day’s events over food, a time that ties the twines of busy family life together. It’s an excellent cue for healthy eating; pop a carafe of water on the table at mealtimes, showcase the natural vibrancy of mixed fruit in a striking bowl and use artwork or posters of healthy foods or positive quotes.

Turn This...
"Bring your personality home. Make it your own!"
Into This! We’ve all wanted to make our new home feel homely yet when we lease, we rarely want to spend oodles on a whole makeover that we’ll have to leave behind when we move on. Often, budgets are already stretched which is a problem for the majority of us, yet even more so when taking on your first home.
Rattan, bamboo, pale woods work nicely with other colours. Finding at least one commonality between key pieces in the room helps the look to appear considered.

If the space is small, have mirrors to bounce light around and if you have less attractive walls, then having a wall of random mirrors works wonders! You can often Take stock; what have you got that’s useful? Reimagine pick these up at car boots and by painting the frames it in a different space. Choose palms and ferns starting out, you are often given odd bits of furniture, which are relatively inexpensive for some impressive or you have assembled a collection of furniture that foliage. If you are not good at taking care of plants, go doesn’t match, so you’ll need to tie the look together with faux. Plastic can be fantastic, just a quick dust and somehow. A great way to do this is by adding natural they’re always looking fresh. elements.
Use lamps; nothing creates the wonderment of cosy ambience of ‘home’ better than a table lamp. Again, stick to naturals if the rest of the furniture is mis-matched, try adding earthy colours which helps the look seem grounded. There’s a super array of earthenware which bring a solidity. Also, worth considering a colour, if you can tie this in with artwork, posters or cushions, it can look really special and all of it can be moved with ease to your next abode.
Stick to 3 main colours if you can, many more and it starts to look cluttered. Unless you are very skilled, limit yourself to fewer patterns in the same space. Multiple patterns can look very effective but it’s a devil of a job to pull off if you are not including pattern in every element of the design. If you do fancy mixing patterns, it’s best to have a common colour pallet between them. Getting creative with cushions is possibly the safest way to practice.
Shade your light bulbs, whilst the bare bulb look is great and of the moment it can look a little unwelcoming, Sneaky tip: Place a book about interior design on the unless you go all out and have masses of them. Textiles are hard workers, they can be used very well to counter-act bland interiors. If your rental property is painted the pre-requisite cream, consider yourself lucky. Just adding a nice contrast or playful pattern across the bed and team this with a bedside lamp and you’re done. If, however the room is a colour not to your taste you’ll need more to detract from the colour. Accessorise. This is where you can go crazy, this is adding a layer of your personality into your home. It’s really fun to have a collection of quirky statements that say something about you. Cheap but effecting staging, such as vases; you could go for colourful quirky or clear glass, whatever takes your fancy. Add a couple of tea light holders and an odd bloom. These can be changed seasonally to keep your room looking fresh.
