Make your Christmas Dinner Table Shine with special touches and the right lighting Choose your theme

When we think of Christmas we naturally think of greens, reds, white’s, gold’s, all of which can all make for a classic look. Sadly, it’s really easy to go over the top, just think of those dreadful singing mug’s or dancing Santa’s!! (I really hope you haven’t got one of those in your stocking!!) So please keep it simple, often the smallest of touches can make all the difference. Try just placing a bright napkin between your main dinner plate and your side plate or soup bowl to accent with your theme. Glass plates with a paper snowflake beneath them can also make an attractive low cost look.

We love Christmas and we all take special care with our tree, decorate the fireplace, hang the Christmas wreath on the front door, pop up the fairy lights, but for many of us the centre piece of your Christmas day is the Christmas lunch, that time to sit down with your friends or family. Make sure that your Christmas dinner table doesn’t miss out on your special treatment. Some simple ideas can really transform any dinner table and make it feel really special.

Au Naturel Instead of spending money on decorations that are only used for a day or two why not bring the outside in with some well placed branches, leaves, fir cones or twigs. If you want to match them to a theme give them the silver or gold spray paint treatment to bling them up! Perhaps spray paint a fir cone to use as a name placeholder or add some well placed branches in your room to mix up the look. It’s amazing what you can achieve for very little cost.

Light it right

GREAT GIFTS -

For Babies and Young Children The perfect lighting for the youngest members of your family A cheap bookshelf and a classic book, Peter Rabbit, The Famous Five, Alice in Wonderland and a delightful bedside lamp. Hey presto you have the beginnings of a library. Choose a sweet little bedside lamp so that Mum or Dad can easily read those precious bedtime stories. It’s a thoughtful gift that reminds your child of bedtime stories they had. The lamp can be a heritage style like ‘hopper’, who’s bound to become a family heirloom in the future or a fun lamp like the lovely LED night lights. LED bulbs are safe, cool to the touch and very low energy.

Check out these LED lamps depicting fairytale princess castles, rocket ships, footballs, cheeky monkeys, trains, teddy bears, rockets and even better than that they are great value. We think they are delightful and the little ones really love the colour changing options. If the child is old enough they can choose a colour for bedtime or just let the colours change slowly from one colour to the next. Very calming and soothing for little ones. It helps make bedtime a little calmer, which is fun for Mums and Dads too! PAGE

Perfect Gift Guide GREAT FOR THE CLUMSY TEENAGER

GREAT FOR THE ARTY TEENAGER

GREAT FOR THE NEUTRAL TEENAGER

Buying gifts for teenagers, is really difficult. They get to the stage they want money or clothes and I feel a bit sorry for teenagers when all they get for Christmas is just an envelope. I know it’s what they ask for but buying something to open is always appreciated. As we certainly can’t buy clothes with any success opt for something for their room. Let’s face it they’ll spend most of the time they are home in their bedroom! A lamp is useful and a stylish addition, who knows it may prompt a little tidy up and pride in the room. Hey, don’t hold us to that, there’s no promises that they will take any further pride in their room. But as parents we learn to live in hope don’t we!? Perhaps a little light in their room will help with the homework, help them do their hair and make up more easily, help them find the thing they can never find in their room if nothing else. PAGE

Great Gifts for

Grown up Mum’s & Dad’s

WHAT’S INSIDE? WHAT’S INSIDE?

hen you are young it’s easy buying a little trinket that your parents will love as a gift. I bought my Dad a box of liquorice allsorts once and then continued almost every year after that. It was a good main present from a child and a not bad stocking filler from anyone now. I know I should say other sweets are available, but if the big wigs at Bassets wants to sent me a big box as a thanks for the mention, that would be ok with me. That would be my dad’s gift sorted this year! Seriously though, now I’m a grown up with parents (forgive me mum) in their 70’s I want to buy something they’ll love. I fear I’ll struggle with idea’s this year but last year I had a good idea.

WHAT’S INSIDE? WHAT’S INSIDE?

Knowing that they have all the nick-knacks they could possibly want already, that ruled out ornaments and kitchen stuff too which they have in abundance. I set about to think of unique gifts. Working for The Lighting Company it did not take long for the inspiration to come. I bought some lovely lamps for Mum and Dad as a joint gift which they really loved. I did the same for the in-laws too. Reading or standard lamps are great choices for older people as eyesight gets a bit worse as we get older. Eyesight deteriorates gradually from about 40 so by the time we get to 70 and beyond better light is a must.

WHAT’S INSIDE?

WHAT’S INSIDE?

If you want to buy someone a lamp but simply cannot choose it for them, buy a gift voucher. I’d suggest printing a copy of the details of some that you think may be worth a consideration. You can always wrap that up, it will show that you’ve looked for something special and that you were thinking of them, not that just that you bought a voucher. As they say it’s the thought that counts! Some people like something to look forward to after Christmas and like to choose themselves but if your parents don’t, maybe be with them when they look online for the gift. It’s especially important if they are not into online shopping. Some websites can be a bit daunting for some older folks.

NEXT: GIFTS FOR COUPLES

In the past I’ve bought lamps for my sister and her husband. I’ve chosen lamps, not light fittings, as lamps can just plug in without getting an electrician. They can also put them in whatever room they like so if it doesn’t quiet hit the mark for the lounge, they could at least go in the spare bedroom. I’m fairly good at judging my sister style so didn’t have any problems choosing for her, she has an old converted barn and loves heritage styles, the Tiffany style lamps are perfect for her style of home.

bestgiftsfor

COUPLES Each year my sister and I pledge to only buy something small for each other but, as she often does the cooking for the family at Christmas, she deserves a special gift. I got away with being a little more generous than she’d have liked when I gave them the lamp as a joint present between her and my brother in law. That was a real bonus too as I never know what to buy him. He has everything already! Talking of the man who has everything, husbands and partners, who buy what they want when they want it drive me to distraction. My husband does that as do my brothers and my Dad, what is the matter with you all!!! Stop that, do not buy anything yourself between September and Christmas. I search online year in year out for idea’s for the man who has everything, and am always disappointed by what choices there are. I either find novelty socks, beer goggles or real yachts!!! Nothing in between, no inspiration.

A

If, like me, over the years you have done all the grand gifts you can think of - phones, watches, sound systems, another watch and goodness knows what else - you may be glad of a suggestion. For those who don’t want to buy rubbish but can’t yet afford to buy the Aston Martin or yacht you are being asked for, I have but one suggestion. . . I thought of how you can buy the yacht. YACHT TABLE LAMP (B) Have his name painted on the side for no extra charge.

B

Another suggestion is a bankers lamp, a real statement which looks great on a desk. I appreciate unless you have a seaside costal themed room, the Yacht lamp may not suit every home unless he has a man cave, study or games room but a BANKERS LAMP (D) may. I hope my few suggestions for unusual alternative gifts for the man who has everything are useful. There are lots of traditional and modern design table lamps and desk lights to choose from - so do check out our website for more ideas. Lamps are good gifts for most couples. Bedside touch lamps are good for older people and people who have limited dexterity in there fingers as they are switched on by the gentlest of touches. Most people like touch lamps as bedside lights as they are easy to switch on or off by touching the lamp. No need to fiddle around in the night looking for the switch. Here’s a few lamps that are lovely gifts. For a good quality touch lamp expect to pay around £30. Try the FINN TOUCH LAMP (A)

C Another option could be the NUGGET TABLE LAMP (C) The mercury glass is lovely and sparkly for everyday use, or as I do, use as a Christmas decoration that goes away and comes out every year. It’s a good price and has a bit of a festive luxury feel.
