AUTUMNAL FALLS Autumn is a delightful time of the year. The outdoors becomes a rich tapestry of russet, gold and copper. The wind catching leaves and twirling them into the greying skies. Who can fail to be in awe at the splendour of the changing seasons. If is was just a bit warmer, drier and lighter it may well be the most perfect time of the year!
THE SEASONS TURN, TURN, TURN . . . . . Whilst Autumnal colours make a pretty picture, I’d prefer to cosy up in doors with a bowl of soup and a blanket over my knees. I guess it’s a kind of semi hibernation. I dream of a cosy log cabin, roaring log fire and nearly always there’s a nice lamp, good book and a glass of something room temperature and red. It’s not always possible to achieve the dream but we can all bring a touch of the outdoors in by adding seasonal touches. Lets face it, a new look lounge at the start of every season would be wonderful as we all get a bit bored of looking at the same four walls. I guess that’s what’s so good about old UK we do have seasons and change is good! Fancy introducing a new look to your lounge without it costing a fortune? We have some tips:

MAKING A RENTED HOUSE:
Feel Homely
Renting a home has benefits as landlords must ensure the property meets all current standards and baring a few unscrupulous landlords the majority of rented homes are well cared for, freshly painted neutral and in good order. What’s not to love!
Many homeowners will struggle for years to get their homes to this stage, however privately rented homes can sometimes be devoid of personality. The landlords role is not that of an interior designer, they go for plain, durable, easy to replace fixtures and fittings and they expect them to be the same when tenants leave. If not your deposit could be lost. This prevents some tenants from doing very much in the way of interior decoration, although there are some really easy ways to create a stylish trendy home without too much trouble. If you are not adverse to painting and the landlord permits, paint one feature wall a strong colour and have a few well chosen accessories, an odd cushion or vase in the same colour. Strong colours have the greatest impact as an accent. If you are restricted or DIY and painting is not your forte. Simply hang a large canvas. Making good could be as simple as painting a wall back to the original colour and filling in a couple of holes left by picture hooks. Pot plants are great to give an instant settled look to a room, but be sure to keep them watered as a dead houseplant is a sad sight.
If you think you are sure to forget, perhaps invest in faux plants, nowadays many are very realistic.
Lastly lighting. Although doing electrical work in a rented home is ruled out you can have great lighting with the addition of some well chosen lamps and ceiling shades.
ABOVE: Try tasteful table lamps and non-electric shades that can easily be removed and come to a new home should you move from your rented home TO SEE MORE LIGHTS FOR BEDROOM, LIVING ROOM, HALLWAY AND KITCHEN STYLE LIGHTS. DIVE IN TO WWW.LIGHTINGCOMPANY.CO.UK

TALKING ABOUT AN
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION W e are pleased as punch to celebrate the industrial revolution by introducing a delightful heritage style range called ‘Edison’. This is our playful slant on the fact most of the innovative techniques first introduced in Great Britain were then adopted and adapted across the world.
C
ontrary to popular belief, the light bulb was first invented by Sir Humphry Davy in 1800, Davy a British scientist, who used carbon, hooked up to battery power making the carbon glow. Later Joseph Wilson Swan improved this by using carbon paper. Thomas Edison was the one who made the light bulb relatively long lasting by the standards of the day 40 hours!!!
Of course light bulbs have now become much longer lasting. The choice of light bulbs available today can be quiet baffling, but we all still love the classic timeless appeal of filament light bulbs. They are so beautiful ,our Edison Lighting Range comes complete with a range of filament bulbs.

MANY TRAVELLERS COMPLAINED ABOUT DIM, BAD AND SPARSE LIGHTING “Hotels in London were subjected to nearly 10,000 reviews specifically on lighting, with many travellers complaining about dim, bad and sparse lighting in their rooms. European hotels were not spared criticism with visitors comparing lighting in a Copenhagen hotel to that of a waiting room in a railway station and others complaining that they found working in their room impossible because of poor lighting” states a recent survey from OSRAM Lighting I’m sure many will agree with that statement. Be it budget or luxury hotels, the standard of hotel guest bedrooms is one of the most important factors to guests.
I guess we are all a little critical as we’re away from our creature comforts. Lighting can be a difficult area for hoteliers, striking the balance between cosy and dim. Some of us like brightly lit rooms and others prefer a duller glow. It is near impossible to get everything completely right. Having multiple lights in a room helps guests as they can switch on all the lights or just one as per their preference, but some hotels even seem to have none of the light bulbs working. Some hotels have great Lighting, they choose the right lights for the right application. Those that don’t are all likelt to want to! Opticians recognise that eyesight deteriorates after the age of 40 and that better lighting is needed for tasks. Many people are actually working whilst staying at hotels. Whilst some simply relax with a book, others just use the hotel room as a base but they to will all likely need to
in the spotlight
shave or apply make up, or perhaps both! A good level of light is needed in all these situations. It’s time that hoteliers catered for what will become the majority older guests! Review websites are easily accessed and can be valuable to guests when they are considering where to stay. Often a bad review in isolation can simply be a disgruntled guest having a rant but if the comments are repeated it has the potential to ruin a reputation. To hotel guests we’d say: If your room is badly lit speak to reception I’m sure they’ll do what they can to resolve the problem there and then to make your stay better. To hotels we’d say: Heed the comments of review sites, they can be one of the best sources of market research. Also read your competitors reviews and if your lighting scores highly maybe your marketing team would like to show off about that?

How2:
SWITCHING ON TO LED’S We really do get turned on by lighting, but by far the biggest development in lighting is the growth of LED the best energy saving bulbs. We have introduced lots of new LED light fittings into the range but there are also retro fit light bulbs too. This means you can keep the lights you have and in most cases fit them with LED light bulbs. LED uses roughly 90% less energy than that of a standard old fashioned light bulb.
LETS EXPLAIN
Say you have halogen recessed lights GU10 they look like this • • • •
ò
Lots of us look around for new energy suppliers to save money on our energy bills. But simply swapping your light bulbs can save a fortune.
They’re rated 50 watts. That means 50 watts of energy is used to power it per hour of use. The light you’ll get is somewhere in the region of 400 Lumens. NEW LED GU10 bulbs give the same 400 lumens of light but at just 4.5 watts to power it. How much could you save?

BUYING EXTERIOR MAINTAIN YOUR OUTDOOR LIGHTS LIGHTS If you were outside every day through all weathers you’d need a bit of tender loving care too. Wouldn’t you? So do your exterior lights. You’ll do jobs in the spring like paint the front door, stain the decking and so on, but all too often exterior lights are neglected. Most people don’t know this but exterior lights if looked after will look better for longer. Worry not, it’s not too late to start. Just few basic jobs to help keep your lights looking good for longer. When you have new outside lights fitted or when you change the bulb next time make a note of what type of light bulb is needed.
Every year undo the fastenings and put little WD40 or grease on the screws and fastenings to protect them from rusting. It also makes it a little easier to undo the fastenings when you do come to change the bulb. WD40 ( we don’t sell it) is good as a protection on metals. Rub a small amount over stainless steel lights it helps them to last longer, especially useful if you live near the coast. Salt in the air breaks down metals and shortens the life of your outside lights. Not much can totally stop sea air degrading lights but protecting them a little will help. Use WD40 or similar on aluminium and stainless steel fittings. Keep painted lanterns fresh with metal paints, taking care not to paint over any sensors or screws. If you live near the coast you could buy lower cost lights and expect to replace them regularly, however our Chester Collection Kinsale range of outdoor lights are guaranteed against corrosion for 15 years and are great value. Check them out on CLICK TO Bespoke Lights.
SEE THE KINSALE COLLECTION
If glass panels are broken replace the light as it will no longer be weatherproof. Unless you can get exactly the same fit you may need to buy a new one. PAGE
20
How2:
Don’t be tempted to put a higher wattage light bulb than the ones that are recommended as too much heat build up can damage the glass and bulb holder parts of the light. Whilst on the subject of light bulbs if your outside light has a sensor or is fitted onto a timer you may not be able to use fluorescent long life light bulbs. The reason is both sensors and bulbs have electronics inside that dislike each other and don’t work well together. Instead use a good quality LED light bulb in lights with sensors or where timers are fitted.
ELLIE’S
In the future when the light bulb needs changing it’ll be easier to buy the bulb saving you from going up the ladder getting the bulb out and going back up the ladder again to fit the replacement bulb. One trip up the ladder is enough.
Be a Shade Braver Find your own individual style
Easy Does It Often Lighting seems to be complicated, it’s not, it’s really very easy . . . . . . . easy peasy. Ellie, our lighting geek, has handy ‘How 2’ guides on most lighting related subjects. Keep an eye out for future issues and more of Ellie’s How 2 guides. If you decide to be a shade braver but need some help contact us as everyone at The Lighting Company is happy to help shed some light! Excuse the pun!
Often our customers don’t change the lighting when they decorate, which to be honest is a real shame as lighting can often make or break the whole decor. With confidence and relevant ease, paint, wallpaper and fabrics are selected, but lighting all to often is simply not considered! It’s like getting all dressed up for a wedding and wearing trainers! Make the change
After many years in the industry we’ve had lots of feedback as to why people have resisted changing their lighting and here’s a few reasons (excuses) why they don’t.
Confidence
Firstly Most folks simply worry about getting it wrong. Not knowing what is trendy, or expected. Hey, we understand that, after all you don’t buy lighting everyday. Finding a style to suit your decor prevents many people too. If you’ve put up with the same look for years, often decades, simply thinking of something different is seen as daunting.
CLICK FOR NEXT COMMON MYTH: You’ll never see a hotel that hasn’t included lighting in the design, it’s unthinkable to designers to leave a light fitting in place if it doesn’t add to the look of the design. But some folks are just not sure about lighting. Fearing there is something complex to it, they avoid doing anything. Come on guys, be a shade braver!

Find the right reading light PLEASE DON’T BE DIM AND PUT STRAIN ON YOUR EYES! Reading or task lamps come in all shapes and sizes, lots and lots of choice! This can only be a good thing, surely? Well no, a wide choice can sometime cause confusion, which results in people struggling with unsuitable lighting for the task. Reading is one of the tasks or hobbies that requires a good level of light, but there are other tasks such as sewing, painting, jewellery making too. For the sake of not going through a huge list of hobbies I’ve picked the one I like best ‘reading’ and hence forth we’ll just say reading lights if that’s OK with you? One of the most common questions is will I be able to read with this lamp? Tommy Cooper, comedian/ magician famed for his quick witted one liners - said that after breaking his arm he asked the doctors if he’d be able to play the piano? The doctor, said “Yes”. Tommy replies “That’s funny I couldn’t play it before!” Tempting as it is to joke and reply “could you read before?’ we know all to well, that poor lighting is no laughing matter. It can spoil the pleasure of a good book if you are straining your eyes or worse still, twisting and turning your neck to try and lean your book into the light it literally is a pain in the neck. If you are a serious reader you’ll need a good reading light. If you have an e-reader you’ll possibly think you are catered for, but what about the times you pick up a glossy magazine or need to read the tiny writing on food labels. A magnifying glass placed in the kitchen drawer and standing under the big light may be ok but there is a better way.

“ALL READING LIGHTS SHOULD OFFER YOU ADDITIONAL LIGHT LOCAL TO WHERE THE TASK IS BEING PERFORMED LIGHTS THAT OFFER A GOOD DEGREE OF FLEXIBILITY ARE BEST”
If it’s switched you need not get out of bed to turn out the light. In a lounge you may benefit from some additional lighting for social tasks too, like jig saw puzzles, maybe that’s where homework is done, of one partner watches TV and the other reads.
These allow you to move position and direct the light to suit the new position. Choose an angled or balanced lamp. Your favoured reading location will dictate the sort the light fitting you can have and the functionality you need.
If this is how your lounge is used a mother and child lamp may be best.
For example if you read in bed a light with a goose neck is a great choice. It allows you to point the light over your shoulder onto the page. This keeps the light local to where it’s needed most and not illuminating the room, which can disturb your partner.
If the room is north facing and the lamp is used for long periods of time an LED version is best. If you need a good reading light and décor and style is important to you there are some fabulously stylish floor lamps such as the large oversized retro styled lamps.
This is one of the best selling
lamps for a lounge as this offers a great deal of flexibility. The reading arm can be angled to suit the readers whilst the uplighter greatly lifts the overall light level in the room or can be dimmed to provide an ambient light for watching TV or for relaxing. The serious hobbyist may require a magnifying light. These are best suited to desks or workbench areas, in short a dedicated work space. If you dip in and out of your hobby or you have limited space you may set up a temporary work space and pack away when you’ve done. PAGE

If this is the case a little clip on light may be just the job for you. Often these lights are used on bunk beds but do so with care as cables left trailing can pose risks and bulbs can become hot. Make sure reading lamps for children are safe and securely fitted.
