Stunningly Stylish Stairwells

MULTI HANGING MODERN The modern industrial stairwell, clad with concrete could look stark and uninviting, however the addition of multiple pendants at differing heights breaks up the space and adds a softer feel through their bulbous shapes. The opal glass creates a diffused light that will provide ample light whilst avoiding glare to ensure traffic moves safely through the stairwell.

TIMELESS & TRADITIONAL

Create more atmosphere in your stairwell with a wall light for a more subdued scheme.

Period and older properties often have high ceiling heights, especially in their stairwells offering a multitude of opportunities for statement chandeliers, multi and cluster pendants to provide light and sculptural design. Here a simple wall light has been used in addition to the simple pendants on each floor to break up the space. You decide!

W

e all know the strains and costs of everyday living and one of the major differences between the last generation and ours is undoubtedly house prices. The country is under considerable strain to build more homes and as a result, many new builds are becoming smaller, which sees multi room or open plan living becoming an accepted compromise by many. But whilst we accept our fate to keep the roof over our heads, I’m sure that if we’re honest, there’s at least one room in the home that is just a little bit too small to achieve what you’d ideally like to. However, with a careful lighting plan, you can make your room feel much more spacious whilst it may not be big, it can be filled with light! One such idea is to keep as much head height as possible which will help enlarge a space, so for working areas such as kitchens, you could consider the main lighting source to be recessed ceiling spotlights. If you have a lovely smooth ceiling that you don’t want to carve up, then you could look at a spotlight bar or cluster depending on the shape of your room. Whilst spotlights are great in kitchens, they provide a very direct light that is not perhaps as subtle as we would like for the rooms or areas that we choose to relax in. Dimmable lights are a great idea to create a cosy ambience, but in order to keep the room from looking small, you’ll need to ensure that the light spreads into the corners. Take lighting up the dining table for example, a ceiling pendant that channels the light on to the table is perfect for eating your meals, but if the corners are in the dark, the eye will be tricked into thinking that the table fills the entire room! Wall lights and table lamps that add to the ambient light and stretch into the dark corners are perfect. Lights that are as multifunctional as your space will really enhance the practicality. In the bedroom for example, you need ambient light but also perhaps a reading light, so you could look at a wall light that provides both. Flexible and adjustable lighting is also worth considering as you can direct the light to best suit the task at hand.

Storage needs to be a consideration as nothing will close a space in as much as a cluttered look. Whilst it’s true that clean lines and pale, calming colours will make a space appear larger, we still like to inject our personality into our homes. Adding colour to one wall, will add interest and if you choose a wall furthest from the entrance point and use darker wallpaper or paint, it can make an optical illusion that the wall is further away from you. Using reflective materials is also beneficial as it helps to bounce the natural light around the room, mirrors opposite windows and doors works a treat too! Where possible, it’s also worth looking at re hanging doors the opposite way to prevent tight corners, or perhaps removing them entirely, or investing in sliding doors to maximise the space. Holidaying in the UK has become increasingly popular, with many families staying in caravans or apartments that are far smaller than our homes. Cleverly thought out, these cosy little spaces are living proof that small rooms with multifunctional spaces are a design feature well worth recreating in our homes. So instead of seeing your smaller space as a challenge, see it as an opportunity to create a unique and inventive design that makes every centimetre work for you.

Beach House

The ORB a great semi-flush ceiling light in a pale cream finish with a traditional three light candelabra style lamp holder surrounded by a half dome frame. A wide diameter of 66 cms ensures a good spread of light and the open structure of allows the eye to see through it for seamless continuation, helping the room to feel open and airy. British made and available in a variety of paint colours.

Add an adjustable wall light like the ATELIER in a white finish which can be retrofitted as it comes with 3 metres of cable with a plug or hard wired if preferred. Either way, the on-off toggle switch on the back plate is operational for convenience and the arm can be adjusted at the back plate or at the base of the shade for customisable illumination.

Studio Apartment The OLONA semiflush lighting fitting will add a bit of glitz and glamour to any space. A polished chrome finished frame with shimmering square faceted crystal beads with a decorative clear glass diffuser. The CARDITO contemporary flush ceiling light that demonstrates great styling does not need high ceilings! The integral LEDs sparkle through the crystal glass giving an impressive 1550 lumens - perfect for lighting up an entire room.

In addition, there is LED strip lighting between the frame and the ceiling which can change colour to suit your decor, or required ambience via the supplied remote control.

This will really help to zone and energise a space, whilst providing a bit of ‘bling’! Perfect in living rooms, kitchens and over dining tables.

P

The Light

Jenny Worrall has long been established as a designer for quintessentially English table lamps. Beautiful handmade glass bases are made with care and attention that sees them worthy of the claim that they are ‘antiques of the future’. Beautiful and timeless, they add a charismatic addition to traditional and modern settings alike Jenny and her team utilise a traditional skill which was first implemented in the Victorian era called Potichomania. Each base starts as a flawless piece of mouth-blown glass, blown to Jenny’s exacting specification which creates an ethereal depth to the images that are to be placed within. A sketched design is loosely attached to the inside of the glass which creates the master sample. Following this, it is set on a template and printed, before the skilled craftsmen then use scalpels to cut out the design with meticulous precision. The decoupage images are then placed within the glass base, following a grid system based on the master sample to ensure that each and every decal is perfectly placed.

Q

When this process is finalised, artists then hand paint the exquisite and intricate details of the design, which are painstakingly brushed with care which guarantees each lamp is a unique work of art. The finishing flourish is the pot being placed on a soft, warm metallic tone plinth with matching lamp holder for a premium quality finish. The inspiration of the designs are inspired by the beauty of nature and the English countryside. Emboldened by the archives of the Royal Horticultural Society, many feature botanicals which are realistically recreated for an authentic look.

Autumn 2017

Along with botanical themes, wildlife will make a subtle appearance in some which adds further interest. The overall sheen of the lamp bases is pearlescent, complimenting the paint techniques by adding a three dimensional depth which draws the eye in, making these an addition to cherish for years to come.

GENERATION SHARED BED SOCIAL

For some the bedroom has become so much more than a place to sleep!

S P A C E

Beds are without doubt, the most comfortable place you can be. In a recent study conducted by Casper, the global sleep company, it was revealed that the average Brit will spend over 7 hours a month, daydreaming about bedtime!

For the fortunate who are able to work from home, home offices seem to be being replaced by a bed office and rather than being a bad idea, early indications show that creative workers benefit from this practice and creativity is increased! Writing, blogging and drawing were amongst those activities where ideas flowed easier from bed.

Despite the fact we love our beds, our décor can sometimes lack a bit of attention.

A simple refresh will work wonders and give you the opportunity for a good clear out too. Pick subtle, muted tones that are calming and treat yourself to new bedding. If you’re a cushion lover, go mad and add some of them too! Update the curtains and perhaps have a rearrange of the furniture if something has not been quite right up until now. As part of Pantone’s ® predictions for interior colour trends in 2018, we are featuring two impressions into the future of colour and the eagerly anticipated interior trends that will delight our homes over the forthcoming months. We simply love the Colour range of lighting from modern lighting designers - The One. The perfect foil for the neutral modular sofa and natural floorboards which would otherwise leave the space feeling somewhat cold and unwelcoming, it really highlights just what an impact your lighting can have. For colour inspiration think of a sweet shop with bright yellow foam bananas, sherbet limes, blue bubble-gum and pink strawberry laces.
